As the report suggest 7B people will be living in the cities by the 2050, where most the cities
won\'t be that much prepared to welcome them all at that time. People will inhabit in cities
mainly due to it\'s better facilities, connectivities etc.
Report also said 60% cities that is not yet built.
Now here is the point, we have 40% cities already that already adopted some water regulatory
system. But they may not be prepared for the huge upcoming surge of population in near future.
So the suggestion for them, adoption of new water servicing system will not be a good idea
because implementation will cost huge & current sustaining life will be disturbed by that time.
Rather than that, with expansion of new population increase the capacity & range of the existing
system. For big & old cities this can be implemented untill they reach to the saturation point.
Now here we will talk about rest 60% future cities where next gen future technology will be
used. These city water servicing systems will be considered as an integrated management of
optimized mix of affordable and sustainable green, gray and natural infrastructure.
Potable water servicing:
Treatment & distribution: High pressure membrane including nanofiltration (NF) & reverse
osmosis (RO) will be the next gen water treatment solution. They can be implemented in large
scale & also cost effective than the existing technologies. NF can be operated in 75-150 psi
where RO can be treated at higher that 250 psi pressure. Hence we will have full flexibility over
treatment range and effectiveness. There is also a technology named, Advanced Oxidation
Technology. This process can have multiple uses in water treatment, such as oxidation of
synthetic organic chemicals, colors etc.
For new cities most efficient water distribution system will be Radial system of water
distribution. Really effective for big cities.
Waste water treatment method:
To achieve greener and more sustainable ecosystem, we need highest degree of waste water
treatment.
Extended aeration have the efficiency of 96 to 99%. This can be one of the best solutions for the
next gen waste water management. Proper disinfection of treated effelunt with chlorination or
UV should be done before ejecting to the nature.
StormWater management:
With increasing urbanization and climate change, it become obvious to prepare a better storm
water management system for future generations. So it will be great if we can implement
Rainwater harvesting. The harvested Water can be used for ground water Recharging after
required treatment. In few US states, there\'s rainwater tax. If tax policies won\'t change in near
future then there must be a better drainage system. But local authorities need to understand what
community wants and what people are prepared to pay for in terms of stormwater management.
