 Humans cannot be managed in a way as
other resources can be, because they are
sentient beings and hence the need arises
to study as to what actually excites them.
 And here is where the concept of
Motivation comes into place.

 Motivation is a transitive form of the noun,
motive.
 Motive is derived from the Latin word, move’re ,
meaning, to move.
 Motivation is the act or process by which the
needs and desires of a person move him towards
some action.

8. Motivation - Traditional Approach
 Motivation is not a new concept.
 It has been practiced from time immemorial
albeit, in a different manner.
 The traditional approach to Motivation is called,
”Carrot and Stick” approach, where an employee
is offered with reward (Salary) for his
performance and punished for non-performance.

9. Motivation – Modern Approach
Modern Approach to motivation is based on
identifying the various needs and wants of
an employee and subsequently using them
as a means of the driving force behind an
employee’s actions that will in turn have a
bearing on the Organisation’s goals as a
whole.

Motivation is defined as the “processes
that account for an individual’s intensity,
direction and persistence of efforts
towards attaining a goal”.

 It differs from one person to another.
