What would happen if we were not allowed to air our opinions or express ourselves freely through newspapers?
Answer: Remember that writing our ideas, feelings, and opinions is an expression of our right to freedom of speech.
When our country was under martial law, people were unable to say what they really wanted. The government was very strict about the content of newspapers. So people were not free to criticize the government and ask for changes. In fact, many people were put to jail for writing and speaking up against the government.
It was on September 21, 1972 when martial law was proclaimed — President Ferdinand E. Marcos issued Letter of Instruction (LOI) No. 1. This ordered government officials to take over and control the mass media, including newspapers, publishing houses, radio and television broadcast stations.
Some publishers, editors, columnists, and reporters were arrested and jailed.
It was in 1986 when all this changed through the February 1986 People Power Revolution. Newspapers, radios and television were free to print and show what they wanted the people to know. We are lucky because up to now, we continue to enjoy freedom of speech.
Given the above, do you think that freedom of speech and the newspaper are important?
Newspapers are important because through them, we exercise our freedom of speech. Through newspapers, we can express our ideas and opinions. The opinion columns, editorials, and letters to the editor are very important. They give the public a voice.

♦ teach you about new topics;
