Interpersonal Theory Of Suicide And Suicide
Evaluate some of the factors that might contribute to a person engaging in suicidal behaviour.
Suicide is the wilful taking of one's own life. Suicide is prevalent and affects people of all ages and
cultures. In the UK male population suicide is now the biggest killer of middle–aged males
overtaking diseases such as cancer and heart disease. A major predictor of engaging in suicidal
behaviour is depression. Furthermore, it was found that 15% of clinically depressed patients would
take their own lives. (HOLT). Those are only statistics but they can in no way describe the misery in
which people find themselves. There are many differing factors that contribute to a person engaging
in suicidal behaviour such as loss, history of mental disorder and environmental factors. There are
also many theories of suicide that integrate these established risk factors such as the interpersonal
theory of suicide.
The interpersonal theory of suicide was developed by psychologist Thomas Joiner. This theory
attempts to understand the reasoning behind in suicidal behaviour. According to the theory, "the
simultaneous presence of thwarted belongingness and perceived burdensomeness produce the desire
for suicide." (Thomas E. Joiner Jr. [et al.]2009). Belongingness is believed to be an essential need,
for an individual 's psychological health and welfare. For example, social isolation is regularly
reported by those who die by suicide previous to death. An individual may also feel that they are

The Theory Of Suicide And Suicide
Since scientific evidence showed that suicide rates skyrocket progressively across all age: children
and adolescent (McClure, 1994), Middle–age (Manton et al., 1987) and the elderly (Draper, 1996),
studying suicide have become an important issue in sociology. Suicide is a complex issue which
may combine several factors such as development factors, social factors, and culture factors
(Goldsmith, 2002). However, Durkheim (1897) provided a classical model including four types of
suicide: altruistic suicide, fatalistic suicide, egoistic suicide and anomic suicide based on simplistic
way the strength of social network. Indeed, this method was scientific proven by other scholars
(Bearman, 1991; Stack, 1994). Even though he made a big progress on typology of suicide, there are
some limitations such as attempted suicide from women (Kushner and Sterk, 2005) and the
homeless suicide (Fitzpatrick et.al., 2007) and religious affiliation (Stack, 2013) have been raised.
This essay will argue that the effectiveness of Durkheim's method compared with recent studies is
not effective to study suicide, as there are some limitations for applying Durkheim's concept to
investigate suicide behaviors. For example, Durkheim's method is lack of supporting evidences from
individual studies such as high rate suicides of the homeless or attempted suicides from women.
Therefore, comparing to recent studies, it should be reformed by combing individual studies and
group studies to get the full scope

Durkheim 's Suicide And Suicide
Throughout this essay, we will be looking a Durkheim's analysis of suicide and whether his ideas on
suicide were right in his time, and whether they are still relevant in today's society. Emile Durkheim
described 'suicide' as a term "applied to any death which is the direct or indirect result of a positive
or negative act accomplished by the victim himself, which he knows will produce this result"
(Durkheim, Suicide: a Study in Sociology, originally published 1897, 1970). Positive acts were acts
that were undertaking with the intention to produce death. Negative acts were actually the distinct
lack of survival acts undertaken, with the knowledge that without these acts, death would be the
result. As far as Durkheim was concerned, although suicide itself is a very individual act, the
reasoning behind suicide was due to predominantly social factors (Durkheim 1970, p44). Suicide
was sociological, not psychological. His research was based not on the personality traits of those
who had committed suicide, but instead at the suicide rates of different countries compared to the
social factors that link the countries together (Durkheim 1970, p40).
Before discussing the social factors that affect suicide rates, Durkheim attempted to narrow down
the ideas behind the reasoning of individual suicides and the level of suicide rates. One proposal to
explain the suicide rate was the environment, such as the climate or conditions. Durkheim agreed,
after analysing Europe that the suicide rate

Suicide And Suicide In America
The suicide levels in America have now reached crisis levels. If suicide were a disease, it would be
discussed on social media, the news and around the water cooler. People would be in a panic
wondering how to counteract the "disease" and escape the clutches of it within their own personal
lives. Doctors would appear on talk shows and the news educating the public on what they can do to
prevent "suicide" from affecting their own lives. It would be labeled the epidemic taking out even
the strongest among us in our modern generation. However, suicide isn't a disease per say. It can be
a symptom of a disease, such as depression. However, it in and of itself is only the embodiment and
end–result of the despair and hopelessness that many people in America live with on a daily basis.
Perhaps, if it was treated like a contagious, preventable disease, and not something to be ashamed
of, less Americans would be meeting their end via suicide and instead seek the help they need to get
better.
What The Statistics Say About Suicide in America:
Aaron Kheriaty, director of the Medical Ethics Program at Cal–Irvine, wrote in his article First
Things, that the "suicide crisis in America has reached epidemic proportions." Suicide rates have
continued to grow coast–to–coast in both urban and rural areas, and have affected the old and young
alike. Amazingly, suicide rates have climbed so high that for the first time since the 1930s, the life
expectancy of Americans has declined. When you think

Brandy Vela, an eighteen–year–old high school student, committed suicide right in front of her
family. Due to all the bullying over her weight, and especially in social media, she pulled the trigger
and ended her life. It is said that her sister had heard a noisy disturbance and when she went upstairs
to her sister's room, she found Vela holding a gun pointing at her chest. "She is just crying and
crying and I'm like, 'Brandy please don't. Brandy no.'" Jacqueline the twenty two–year–old sister
told Fox News. (Fox News–Texas Teen). Fox News said Brandy Vela was taken to Clear Lake

The access for committing suicide must be restricted to young adults.
Life as a teenager may not be as easy as some people might think. Suicide may be what teenagers
believe will be best for them. Young adults think it is the solution to all of their problems and stress.
It can also be caused by a series of emotions. There are many complications that teenagers might be
facing thinking they cannot be solved. Depression is the most common cause of teenage suicide.
There are teens that might want to "socially fit in, academically fit in, and act responsibly." (About
Teen). Teenagers might have a low self esteem and feel hopeless and worthless, causing them to kill
themselves for feeling that they are not good enough for anything. Teens might be dealing with
bisexuality or homosexuality in an environment that is unsupportive. Breaking up with a boyfriend
or girlfriend can be traumatic for some teens. Kids might be having a poor relationship with their
families and peers. There might be emotional, physical or sexual abuse towards them. Teens might
be victims of bullying. Young adults might be going through really big life changes like a parent's
divorce, financial changes, moving, etc. There are a lot of problems that these young teens could be
going through and we would not know. Many problems going on today could lead teenagers to
depression and have them want to

Suicide And Suicide
Adults usually tell young people that, "the teenage years are the best years of your life." But
ironically, life for many young people is a heart breaking battle full of mixed messages and
contradictory demands from parents, teachers, coaches, employers, friends and oneself. Growing up
involves finding the link between independence and reliance on others and this can be really
confusing. It can lead to stress, which may eventually lead to serious depression for young people
ill–equipped to cope, communicate and solve problems. The social pressures experienced by
students in the tertiary institutions and graduate studies continue to increase, as well as the
prevalence of mental illness in college students (Pedersen et al., 2014). The pressures that come with
higher education, bring about high anxiety rates, feelings of failure, stress, suicidal ideation, and
depression. Therefore it is forthcoming that the treatment and screening options for depression and
suicidal ideation be given more attention. Often more extreme social and academic pressures, can
increase anxiety and depression in students (Potter et al., 2004). And so some universities have
support groups formed on campuses to help students. But the question is, "Do the students patronize
them?" Emory University (2015) suggests that there are specific risk factors for university students
in association with suicide, including academic pressures, use of drugs and alcohol, decreased social

Teen Suicide And Suicide
Recent studies have shown a rise in both teen suicides and self–harm among adolescent girls.
Suicide among adolescent girls may occur as a result of mental disorders, drug misuse, cultural,
family and social situations, genetics, and most of all, cyberbullying (Ehmke). Based on a 2015
study, about 20% of adolescent girls in the U.S. consider suicide and between 5% and 8% of them
attempt suicide each year (Ehmke). In 2014 alone, 150 girls out of 10 million, between the ages of
ten and fourteen, committed suicide due to cyberbullying among other related factors (Graham).
Medical experts warn that excessive social media and smartphone use may lead to cyberbullying.
Most victims of cyberbullying often experience a great deal of stress and anxiety leading to suicidal
ideation (Ehmke). An analysis by Jean Twenge, in The Atlantic, confirms that cyberbullying is more
strongly related to suicidal thoughts in adolescents than traditional bullying (Twenge). Some
estimates suggest that – depending on the country of origin – between 5% and 20% of adolescent
girls are victims of physical, verbal or exclusion–based bullying, while 15% to 30% of them are
victims of cyberbullying (Twenge). The relationship between cyberbullying and suicide has only
been explored in a few studies, but Jean Twenge's analysis strongly suggests that cyberbullying is a
major risk factor for suicide ideation in adolescent girls (Twenge).
The new analysis by Jean Twenge tests this evidence by reviewing all

"Ethan felt like there was no point going on with life. Things had been tough since his mom died..
His dad was working two jobs and seemed frazzled and angry most of the time. Whenever he and
Ethan talked, it usually ended in yelling. Ethan had just found out he'd failed a math test, and he was
afraid of how mad and disappointed his dad would be. In the past, he always talked things over with
his girlfriend – the only person who seemed to understand. But they'd broken up the week before,
and now Ethan felt he had nowhere to turn. Ethan later went on to seek out his dad's gun with which
to attempt to take his life"(Tracy).
Every year more teens are dying by one thing, which is suicide. Why? Sometimes teens feel useless
and worthless. Suicide is not something to joke about. If someone you know has joked about taking
his or her life, they may not be joking. We need to educate ourselves about how serious the problem
is, why teens would consider suicide, and what we can do if we know someone who's considering
suicide.
How bad can it be?
Many teens may not even know how serious suicide can possibly be. Suicide can't be taken as a

slowly slipping away because of this deadly subject and people need to start noticing. Sometimes
people can get caught up in their own personal lives and not even notice when a loved one is
considering suicide. In the seven articles read, there were a variety of things that people seem to
overlook often. Why teens are committing suicide and what people can do to help victims who are

Suicide can occur after experiencing a stressful life event for teens. Perceived failure at school, a
break up with a boyfriend or girlfriend, the death of a loved one, a divorce or a major family
conflict. Here is a list below From Kids Health that gives some signs to look for when a teen might
be considering suicide.
* Talk about suicide or death in general * Talk about "going away" * Pull away from friends or
family * Lose the desire to take part in favorite things or activities * Have trouble concentrating or
thinking clearly * Experience changes in eating or sleeping habits * Self–destructive behavior
(drinking alcohol, taking drugs, or driving too fast, for example)
In a recent article by Jane Brody in the New York Times, she summarized research showing major
risk factors for teen suicide.
1. Depression – often not recognized. 2. Substance abuse. Sometimes teens try alcohol or other
drugs to relieve depression. 3. Behavioral problems – getting in trouble in school or with the law,
fighting with parents – is the third risk factor for suicide. 4. Availability of a gun. This makes the
consequences of an impulsive act much more lethal. 5. Previous attempts. Half of all children who

The Suicide And Suicidal Suicide
Emile Durkheim once stated that suicide is, "all cases of death resulting directly or indirectly from a
positive or negative act of the victim himself, which he knows will produce this result" (Jones,
1986). However, suicidal ideation is considered when an individual has thoughts or feelings of
suicide, but does not attempt or complete suicide. Suicidal gesture, is when the individual has
attempted the act of ending their life, if they were to be accidentally successful, then the suicide is
completed (Leming & Dickson, 2016). A completed suicide is when an individual has successfully
ended their life by their own actions. In addition, in an article, it stated, "Although most patients
with suicidal ideation do not ultimately commit ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
616). However, in our book it states that, "Suicide gestures are motivated by a need for aid and
support from others, whereas completed suicides are acts of resignation" (Leming & Dickson, 2016,
p. 309). What can be deduced is that suicide gestures are actions that are made to create focus onto
the individual; a plea for help. Not always is this the case. Many individuals who make suicidal
gestures are not pleading for help; instead they are attempting to complete suicide, but fail to do so.
An example of a suicide gesture would be when a person slices their wrists, far below the fatal area
of compromise. Another example is seen in the Clint Eastwood movie, Million Dollar Baby. In this
movie, the lead actress Maggie Fitzgerald, played by Hilary Swank, is a boxer whom, during a
match, is knocked down and she falls on the stool, breaking her neck (Eastwood, C., 2005). Maggie
is paralyzed from the neck down and finds herself depressed and miserable. She attempts to take her
life by biting down on her tongue, hoping it would kill her or get the attention of someone. And it
did, her trainer, Eddie Scrap–Iron Dupree, played by Morgan Freeman euthanizes her with a lethal
dose injection (Eastwood, C., 2005). This act is a different kind of attempt called, assisted suicide.

Elder Suicide
Throughout the years suicide rates have increased and is a significant public health issue. According
to the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention, suicide is the 10th leading cause of death in the
United States. However, suicide rates are high among the elderly, yet research on suicide prevention
in older adults remains neglected.
According to the American Psychological Association, the number of Americans aged 65 and older is
projected to double from 46 million to more than 98 million by 2060. For example, there has been
improvements in medical technology, healthcare services, universal health care, and research. It is
evident that Americans are living longer but does our society do enough to help the elderly?
Although, older adults tend to be more satisfied with their lives more than younger people that is not
always the case .For those who are suffering from mental health issues, there is a limited supply and
improper access to psychiatric treatment which leaves older adults underdiagnosed and undertreated.
According to the American Psychological Association, one in four adults ages 65 and older
experiences a mental health problem such as depression, anxiety, schizophrenia or dementia. This is
quite alarming because it is known that people with mental illness already receive poor care. Poor
care combined with living in a society where aging is shamed causes a major concern.Negative
stereotypes and attitudes are directed toward the elderly. For

Suicide is the act of taking away one's own life. Suicide, to me, is one's irrational desire to die. This
is because suicide can never be a solution to end problems. Suicide, in my opinion is a permanent
solution to a temporary problem. This is because every problem that we face definitely has its own
solution. There will always be a way to solve a problem. Suicide is a sign of major depression. Only
cowards will take suicide as a solution and will never think of an alternative solution towards

According to researches, suicide is the third most common cause of death amongst adolescents
between 15–24 years of age, and the sixth most common cause of death amongst the 5–14 year olds.
It is estimated that over half of all teens suffering from depression will attempt suicide at least once,
and of those teens, roughly seven percentages will succeed on the first try. It has become paramount
that teenager nowadays commit suicide just to escape from problem without thinking rationally and
made it a norm as its solution towards the problem faced. Teenagers are especially vulnerable to the
threat of suicide, because in addition to increased stress from school, work and peers, teens are also
dealing with hormonal fluctuations that can complicate even the most normal situations. Due to
these social and personal changes, teens are also at higher risk for depression, which can also
increase feelings of despair and the desire to commit suicide. Teen girls are statistically twice as

Suicide And Suicide In America
While society is failing, hurting, and falling deeper into the pit of desperation, our education system
is spiraling downward with it. According to the American Association of Suicidology, over five
thousand adolescents, aged 12 to 24, commit suicide each year. It is the third biggest killer of
teenagers in our country (MHA). The American Foundation for Suicide prevention shows us the
heartbreaking reality of this monster in our own state. This year, 433 Iowans took their own life
(AFSP). On average, one of our own will fall into desperation and end their life, breaking hundreds
of hearts with their own, every 20 hours (AFSP). On my 19th birthday, September 15, 2017, the
silent screams of my classmate Justin were finally heard as they echoed throughout our community.
The class clown, the star athlete, the boy that everyone loved, was gone. He is one of thousands. In
our home state, high school students' second leading cause of death is this monster we call suicide.
Nobody is hearing their silent screams for help. Is there a need for an education justice movement in
our educational system? The Jason Foundation's statistics give a clear answer. Every day in our
nation, over 3,400 high school students attempt to take their own life (YSS). Read that again: every

In America today, majority of schools have a plethora of diversity. Students in schools all have
different cultures, talents, and views that make them unique from one another. Schools feel full of
culture due to diversity. A student's voice helps a school become a wonderful and lively place to
learn. However, what happens when a student silences their voice for ever by killing themselves?
When a student dies in an accident, schools can mourn the death as a random occurrence. However,
when a student kills themselves, a school feels guilty as they mourn. The teachers feel that they
failed to help the student who was suicidal. The students feel bad for not knowing the student. Those
who are responsible in some way are conflicted inside by guilt. These people cannot fully live with
themselves because they know that they caused a death. If a school truly wants to know more about
diversity, they know the outcast. They must ask, why are these people suicidal? They must also ask
what can be done to help them?

Youngster suicide is a noteworthy issue in our general public today. The youthful suicide rate has
tripled since 1960, while being the biggest reason for death between the ages of 15 and 24. This is
the one single age aggregate that has seen an expansion in suicides in the course of recent years.
There are around 10,000 detailed suicides revealed every year. It is assessed in any case, that the
genuine number of adolescent suicides is really three to four times that number when unreported
passings are considered in. The young years are brimming with hardships for everybody. Youths are
regularly constrained into adapting new social parts, growing new connections, getting used to the
adjustments in your body, and settling on choices about their future. That can influence a man to feel
very alone. Young people encounter solid sentiments, perplexity, self–question, strain to succeed,
money related vulnerability, and different apprehensions while growing up. Young people submit
suicide in light of the fact that there is excessively torment in their lives. While a few young people

Suicide And Suicide Prevention
Suicide is an epidemic that has taken the lives of countless people of all age groups. In the United
States between 1999 and 2014, the rate of suicides has practically doubled. The frightening crisis
has led to the creation of numerous suicide prevention programs offered through schools,
communities, and organizations. Often, the programs are created with specific goals in mind and are
meant to target certain groups of people, such as programs dedicated to increasing awareness of teen
suicide. Despite the efforts made to prevent self–inflicted deaths, there are still an alarming number
of suicides that take place every day. When a person commits suicide, many people suffer. Each
death may create numerous suicide survivors who are left to suffer the consequences of losing a
loved one and many of the unanswered questions that come with it. Therefore, hundreds of
thousands of people each year are affected by suicide. In order to address the suicide crisis in the
United States, the quantity of well–executed suicide prevention programs should be increased, as
doing so will both increase awareness and the amount of help available to those suffering from
suicidal thoughts.
Often times, when a person commits suicide, massive amount of people they leave behind suffer.

The Death Of Suicide And Suicide
August ??, 2015
Suicide is an occurrence in life that society does not want to talk about. Social knowledge is
minimal at best about how to approach communication with those affected by suicide. The stigma
about suicide is vastly misunderstood, unfounded and should not exist. Learning about suicide is
very important not only for society but for those who have to suffer and live with the "social blight"
society has created about this sad problem. There are various reasons for attempted suicide such as
mental illness, anxiety, depression, and the struggles of life in general as the list goes on. The bridge
between life and death is knowledge, compassion and perseverance.
According to American Association of Suicidology – AAS website, there were approximately 1.3
million suicide attempts in 2013. That is one every 24 seconds. Suicide ranked 10th as a cause of
death; Homicide ranked 16th.
The elderly (ages 65 and older) made up 13.75% of the population; they accounted for 16.37% of all
suicides in the US. There is one suicide for every estimated 4 suicide attempts in the elderly. (CDC)
There was about one elderly suicide every 80 minutes. There were about 18.2 suicides each day
(6,648 suicides) among those 65 and older.
The second leading cause of death for 15–24 year olds in 2013 was suicide. The third leading cause
was homicide. There were 4,878 suicide deaths. An average of 1 young person every 1 hour and 48
minutes killed themselves.

Suicide And Suicide Interventions On The Drink Of Suicide
Helping individuals suffering from suicidal ideations and attempts at self–harm calls upon a social
worker's ethical obligation to service. According to the NASW Code of Ethics, "social workers'
primary goal is to help people in need and address social problems" (National Association of Social
Workers, 2008). A way to fulfill this duty is by giving first responders the tools necessary to
adequately talk with people in crisis and on the brink of suicide. "Considered a preventable cause of
death, suicide is a major public health concern in many industrial and post–industrial countries, and
one of the three leading causes of death worldwide among individuals from 15 to 44 years of age"
(Hoy, Natarajan, & Petra, 2016).
Often times individuals in crisis will come in contact with first responders either by contacting
emergency services themselves or from a call placed by a family member or concerned citizen.
According to research by Gould et al. (2013), "to address the global tragedy of nearly one million
deaths by suicide worldwide, public health interventions with widespread capacity to reach at–risk
populations are needed" (Gould et al., 2013). One way to attain this goal is by training dispatchers,
law enforcement officers, paramedics, and firefighters on the current evidence based practices for
suicidal crisis intervention. Providing first responders with the skills needed to more effectively
communicate with the suicide population should, in turn, increase the

The Prevention Of Suicide In Aboriginal Suicide
INTRODUCTION
In the past, aboriginal suicide has been addressed the same way as non–aboriginal populations in
both national and provincial suicide prevention approaches (Health Canada, 2013; Hunter & Harvey,
2002; MacNeil, 2008). However, these approaches are not feasible to generalize throughout the
aboriginal population since this population has an increased amount of historical trauma and
ongoing issues that these strategies do not consider (Elliott–Farrelly, 2004). Many situations have
occurred that makes it evident that these two populations need separate suicide prevention strategies
and at large, the Aboriginal population needs to be addressed immediately. This paper will address
the background issues of the increased rate of suicide within aboriginal communities. It will then
discuss a policy statement that is feasible for the prevention of suicide within the aboriginal youth
population. The policy to be discussed is an in–school program to educate individuals on Aboriginal
suicide and prevention. This school–based approach uses an inclusive liberalism ideology to inform
students about the risks and warning signs of suicide. In addition, the results of the class
consultation will be addressed to discuss the strengths and limitations of this approach. Therefore,
this paper addresses a feasible policy that will prevent suicide within aboriginal youth.

Suicide And The Death Of Suicide
Suicide, a Permanent Solution to a Temporary Problem
Good afternoon, I'm Jasmyne here to talk about suicide and how big of a problem it is. Suicide is
defined as an act of one intentionally killing themselves. Why is suicide such a big problem? Well,
suicide takes the lives of nearly 40,000 Americans every year; also it is more likely someone will die
from suicide than from homicide. For every two people killed by homicide, three people die of
suicide. Children young as 10 years of age have even committed suicide. 1 in 65,000 children ages
10 to 14 die by suicide each year. Children, only 10 years old have taken their own lives. Young
children, with decades ahead of them, their whole life ended by hanging or shooting themselves.
Along with the deaths of suicide being greater than homicide, there are 2 times as many deaths due
to suicide than HIV/AIDS. The death of suicide though, it is the 3rd leading cause of death for 15 to
24–year–olds and 2nd for 24 to 35–year–olds. Why is it that a preventable death is has such a higher
rate than an unpreventable one?
People have many reasons to commit suicide. Some do it to stop the pain; they believe that the
problems in their lives will never get better. Tiffanie DeBartolo states, "Did you really want to die?
No one commits suicide because they want to die. Then why do they do it? Because they want to
stop the pain." Or, others do it because they feel like that they worthless. That they feel like as if the
world would do better

Suicide And Suicide : Solution To Preventing Teen Suicide
Preventing Teen Suicide
According to the World Health Organization, "Suicide has surpassed homicide to become the second
leading cause of death among ten to twenty–nine–year–olds; in 2012, suicide claimed the lives of
more than five–thousand people within this age bracket" (Onieal 14). Five–thousand young people
felt that the weight of the problems they were faced with was too much to handle, and suicide was
the only solution. As a teen who struggled with clinical depression and anxiety, this is an issue that
is very real to me. So many of these suicides could have been prevented if we were more aware of
how many teens are struggling with depression, anxiety, and other mental illnesses, and offered our
support and strength to those who feel too weak to hold on any longer. There are a lot of pressures
on teens in today's society, such as achieving good grades, managing a heavy school load, parents
getting divorced, break–ups with boyfriends and girlfriends, trying to conform to the standards of
beauty we see on social media, bullies at school, and functioning with not nearly enough of sleep.
When combined, these pressures can be so stressful that they can cause serious anxiety and mental
illness. Janis Whitlock, director of the Cornell Research Program on Self–Injury and Recovery says,
"If you wanted to create an environment to churn out really angsty people, we've done it. It's that
they're in a cauldron of stimulus they can't get away from, or don't want to get away from, or don't
know how to get away from." One of the most effective ways to prevent suicide is to provide
awareness and educate students, parents, school officials, community members and peers on how to
identify suicidal signs (Shireen, Janapana, Rehmatullah, Temuri, Azim 210). When someone
commits suicide, we often hear things like, "I never saw it coming," or "they seemed fine." When
someone is struggling and nobody notices, it makes them feel unloved and like no one cares about
them, which can cause suicidal thoughts. If we were more aware of signs of depression, anxiety, or
suicidal behaviors, we could make somebody struggling feel loved, supported, and hopeful, and
encourage them to seek out professional help. Not only does suicide take

Research has shown the following: Hanging is the leading method of suicide around the world and
is particularly popular in rural area. and the most common in the world. Although women attempt
suicide about three times more often than men, men complete suicide about three times more often
than women. Four out of five people who commit suicide have attempted to kill themselves at least
once previously. Suicide is the leading cause of death for people with schizophrenia.
Many suicidologists have criticized news coverage of suicides, citing that reading about suicide
victims in the news often triggers copycat or "contagion" suicides.
Levels of a brain transmitter called serotonin is considered a possible predictor of suicide. Some
researchers found that people with low levels of serotonin are six to 10 more times likely to commit
suicide than are people with normal levels.
States that specifically allow physician–assisted suicide under certain strict guidelines. A few of
these guidelines include being diagnosed with a terminal illness that will lead to death in six months,
making two oral requests and one written request for assistance separated by 15 days, and
persuading two physicians that the patient is sincere and is not influenced by depression.
In America, the most common suicide method for both men and women is firearms, accounting for

Suicide And Suicide Essays : Topical Thoughts Of Suicide
Thoughts of Suicide Did you know that Approximately 75% of students with low–income are most
likely to kill themselves? The reason this being is because they might not have the latest Jordans ,
Balenciagas, Gucci or anymore of the newest clothes that come out. Its sad that our society is all
based upon your appearance. Low income students are more likely to be bullied , drop–outs, suicidal
and cyberbullied all because of society. Low income students don't have as much assistance as other
kid ,they struggle trying to meet basic needs & they Continuously have financial crises. Low income
students should also know that they are not alone and should have a go to person they should talk to.
The reason this Topic was chosen was because poor students are more prone to suicide because they
have a more risk for being troubled. They have more issues to deal with in their everyday life such
as Cyber bullying & just bullying period.
For those of you who don't know what are Suicidal thoughts & what is suicidal ideation it is
basically a detailed outline/plan on how to kill yourself. According to a study, over one fifth of
people who has died by suicide has already discussed their problems with a doctor or a friend. I
know sometimes there's a moment in life when we might feel hopeless, helpless and overwhelmed
with emotional pain. Our problems problem may seem unfixable it seems as if it will never end.

Suicide In Teen Suicide
Suicide continues to be one of the main causes of death in teens throughout America. Statistically,
suicide in the second leading cause of death for those ages ten to twenty–four and around 3,470
people grades ninth to twelfth attempt suicide each day in the United States (Youth Suicide Statistics
1). The reason for these people wanting to take their life is unknown, however, divorce of parents,
formation of a new family, or moving to a new community, are common reasons for suicide. On the
other hand, those who battle depression or develop depression increase the risk of a suicide attempt.
People may think that everything is going wrong and dying is the only solution; but people will
always be willing to help. Suicide is a permanent solution to a temporary problem and nothing is
worth taking your own life over.
In Willa Cather's short story "Paul's Case", the main character, Paul, is clearly unhappy with his own
life as well as his home life. Paul lost his mother and has an unstable relationship with his father. He
dreads going home, as Cather explains: "...the hopeless feeling of sinking back forever into ugliness
and commonness that he had always had when he came home" (Cather 108). This quote expresses
the hatred and disgust that Paul has towards his home and he will do anything to avoid coming
home. This book is very relatable and realistic because similar to Paul, many teenagers dislike their
home life and would much rather be away from their own family. Distancing yourself from loved
ones, family, friends, teachers, coaches, or whoever it may be, can be an early sign of depression
(Suicide in Children and Teens 1). Paul may or may not suffer from depression, but either way, his
death could have easily been prevented if Paul had a more positive outlook on life.
While homelife has an enormous impact on someone's emotions, life outside of home may be even
more important. According to Suicide in Children and teens, rebellious behavior such as constant
lying may be a sign of suicidal person. "When questioned by the Principal as to why he was there,
Paul stated, politely enough, that he wanted to come back to school. This was a lie, but Paul was
quite accustomed to lying; found it, indeed, indispensable for

Suicide And Suicide Factors
Certain factors will attribute to one's risk of becoming suicidal. With each additional factor an
individual becomes more at risk. The most common suicide risk factors include: depression,
substance abuse, a personal or family history of suicide attempts, sexual orientation, stressful life
events, and both physical and sexual abuse (Aldrich & Cerel, 2009). In addition, particular
populations have proven to be at greater risk, such as, adolescents and young adults, elderly, those in
high stress professions, people living alone or in select regions, and family members of suicide loss
face a risk which twice as high as the general population (Draper et al., 2015). Other research
studies have identified other at–risk populations, such as, individuals with psychiatric disorders,
those with physical disorders, especially conditions associated with chronic pain, and patients with
traumatic brain injuries (Suicide Risk Assessment Guide, n.d.).
Further risk factors to identify are suicidal behaviors or symptoms. If there is a new onset behavior
or an increase in perseveration coupled with a painful event, loss, or change, then the risk of suicide
is even greater (Higgins, 2014). Behaviors of suicidal ideation include, but are not limited to:
Talking about wanting to die.
Seeking out methods or ways to die.
Feeling hopeless or making statements about having no reason to live.
Experiencing unbearable pain and feeling trapped.
Discussing how they are a burden to others.

The Death Of Suicide And Suicide
Preventing Suicide
Suicide is an extremely sensitive subject for most. Whether it is someone beloved or someone
known, just about everyone knows a person that has committed suicide or has tried, but failed the
attempt. Why does it seem complicated to approach someone to offer condolences, when the victim
has committed suicide? Often, suicide is related to weakness when one must give up his own life to
end the hurt that he or she feels. Various other situations contribute to the factor which lead to
suicide, but one must look for the signs. Furthermore, understanding why people suicide and staying
alerts for the signs of suicide will help prevent devastating effects that follow, possibly saving a life.
There are many reason why one would contemplate taking their own life. Rita Robinson states in
her book Survivors of Suicide that this is a, "mental disorder..." (Chapter 4). Although, others would
criticize and refer to suicidal people as weak or insecure it is in fact a mental condition that without
medical attention, cannot always be prevented. Robison also mentions how Bipolar, schizophrenia,
or individuals suffering from severe depression are especially prone to suicidal tendencies due to the
fact that their brains are, "Wired differently" (Chapter 4). These mental conditions exacerbate issues
for individuals that are already unable to cope with the issues one deals with in life. Additionally,

Durkheim Suicide And Suicide
DURKHEIM, SUICIDE, AND SOCIAL COHERENCE
Durkheim's study on suicide
Suicide (French: Le Suicide) was a notable book in the field of humanism. Composed by French
humanist Émile Durkheim and distributed in 1897 it was apparently a contextual analysis of suicide,
a production one of a kind for its time that gave an illustration of what the sociological monograph
ought to resemble. Some argue that it is not a contextual investigation, which makes it novel among
other academic take a shot at the same subject findings.
Durkheim reasoned that:

years wound up with a high suicide rate).

If you can't imagine a situation in which killing yourself seems like the best option, you simply
haven't suffered very much. Suicide is, in a sense, the last form of protest against suffering that is
too strong to make life worth living. Sometimes that suffering is purely organic – there's something
wrong with your body and it's caused by nothing related to society. But sometimes, suicide is a
protest against being forced to function and give support to a society that is so unfair and unequal
that it's not worth staying alive.
Suicide is a perplexing issue with numerous aspects. Instead of giving in to a narcissistic
apprehension based perspective in which we trust suicide is never right for all individuals, we ought
to educate ourselves more about the reasons for suicide and how best to support individuals at
danger of suicide. A sweeping conviction that suicide is never right, or alright just in instances of
serious agony in end–of–life circumstances, is stating that suffering individuals have an obligation
to their family, companions, and society to keep on living in intolerable conditions, instead of saying
that society needs to work harder to make individuals' lives endurable in the event that it needs
individuals not to submit

injurious behavior with intent to die as a result of the behavior ("Suicide," n.d.) In 2015 there was
twice as many suicides than homicides. The annual suicide rate is 13. 26 per 100,000 people
("Suicide Statistics – AFSP," n.d.) More than 44,000 people have committed suicide making it the
tenth leading cause of death overall. Among children 10–14 suicide is the third leading cause of
death and the second among people between 15 and 34 ("Suicide Statistics – AFSP," n.d.)

incident using screening measurements.

years suicide rates have increased by 24%. Though there is a high prevalence of suicide it affects
various populations and areas differently. Western states, such as New Mexico, Colorado, Wyoming,

Durkheim's Suicide And Anomiic Suicide
One can only imagine how hard it might be to return to society after coming home from war or
being in the military for a long person of time, especially since in 2012 the numbers of soldiers
deaths by suicide where higher than deaths by combat (new source). Durkheim developed an
abundant amount of information and research on suicide. He classified different types of suicides
that can occur depending on society. His types of suicides can aid to the understanding of why these
soldiers commit.
Durkheim had multiple types of suicides and their causes. Two of these types of suicides include
egoistic and anomic suicide. Egoistic suicide is when social integration is too weak that it causes
suicide (cite; notes 2015). This can happen when religious, domestic, and political social groups

Barrett was believed to have been on leave when he showed up at his family's house for a range of a
few months. Shortly after his stay at his family, Barrett committed "suicide by cop" (new source).
Barrett's suicide could be considered either Anomic or Egoistic suicide, depending on how one
interprets it. If we take an anomic suicide approach we could conclude that his suicide was caused
because when he came home from war, his needs and ideas on life differed so much that they could
not be met and trying to reintegrate within society became to stressful and painful that he could not
handle it. If we look at it from an egoistic approach we can say that once back at home in society,
and away from his military lifestyle, society disintegrated him and made him feel like he did not
belong. From being disintegrated he experience excessive individualism, which caused the suicide.
These types of suicide are not only possible for Barrett, but for any type of solider coming home

Suicide Essay : The Act Of Suicide
The Act of Suicide Suicide is merely defined as, the action of killing oneself intentionally. Suicide is
often times a very complex thing and can arise many types of questions. Some questions that may
arise while talking about suicide are as so: Is suicide every justified? Is this considered suicide? Is
suicide ever for the good of others? In this essay I hope to address some of the topics of suicide that
really challenge one to think. This papers discussion will come from the film Seven Pounds and
Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy. This film has really made me dive into the deep thinking that
surrounds suicide. The film has opened my eyes to viewing suicide in a whole new way. To start off
with the thoughts and thinking that surround, Seven Pounds one must have a basic understanding of
the film. I will provide a short summary of this movie to provide a basic understanding of the movie.
In the movie the main character is named Ben Thomas. Ben caused a terrible car accident with his
wife that ultimately lead to the death of seven individuals including his wife. Ben's life was
shattered and he dedicated the rest of his life to helping others in a huge way. He began to donate
organs and to help save the lives of seven individuals. By giving up some of his liver, a kidney, and
some bone marrow Ben provided life to others. This was not Ben's ultimate gift though. He was
going to give up his eyes and heart. He found very good candidates and realized these were the

The Suicide And Suicide Prevention
Suicide is defined as death by an act of self–infliction as an effort to end one's life. According to the
Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (2013), suicide was the tenth leading cause of death for
all ages among Americans in 2013. It is the second leading cause of death among fifteen to twenty–
nine year olds globally stated by World Health Organization (2015). Suicide being ranked that high
on the lists of causes for deaths is astonishing because each of those deaths was preventable. Having
awareness, knowledge, and the resources about suicide and suicide prevention must be utilized to
provoke social change in individuals, families, and communities. The purpose of this teaching plan
is to teach about suicide and suicide preventive strategies to adolescences ages twelve to nineteen
years, using the humanistic learning theory and health promotion model, to a group in the identity
versus role confusion psychosocial development stage and formal operational stage of cognitive
development.
Population Identified Adolescent suicide is an increasing mental health concern. Adolescents are
considered a high–risk group in view of the fact that suicide is the third leading cause of death
among the ages ten to fourteen and the second leading cause of death among ages fifteen to thirty–
five (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 2013). Alarming statistics such as these have
bought enough attention to add "Adolescent Health" as a new topic in Healthy People 2020

The Issue Of Suicide And Suicide
Suicide has been an issue that has been in the world for generations and sadly, more to
come. The way this problem was mostly seen as in the past, was an act of pride and honor, as
seen by the Japanese samurai tradition of Seppuku. Same with Ancient Greece and Ancient
Rome, the history of suicide in their community, was out of pride. Prefer death over dishonor
and rather die than poor health being seen weak. However, in present time, most people commit
themselves due to problems they have in themselves caused by outside forces. People would
commit in order to avoid a situation or problem occurring in their lives. This issue of suicide still
persists due to depression, which is the most common reason of suicide, but also someone could
have a mental illness as well. Society and media has a huge impact on why suicide has been
around for a long time, and it still persists. Dolefully, "In the past 15 years, there has been a 22%
increase in the national suicide rate in the United States,1 while the total number of psychiatric
hospital beds in the United States decreased from 34 to 22 beds per 100 000 residents"( Robert
D. Gibbons, Kwan Hur, J. John Mann) This could possibly be one big reason why this issue is
still increasing in rate. The Suicide rate has been drastically increasing through the years, but it
seems that some hospitals are reducing aid to the one's going through depression or mental
problems. People in the community who

Suicide Prevention : The Dangers Of Teen Suicide And Suicide
Teen Suicide is dangerous. You might think your child's not at risk, that they are completely fine.
Think again, everyone's child is at risk. Child and teen suicide is only growing and it's increasing
risk doesn't seem to be slowing down. Teen Suicide Prevention is the way to protecting our younger
generation from fighting depression. Through reminding our kids their life is worth it, the amazing
Sources of Strength program, and through telling our kids the dangers of teen depression, we can

Sources of Strength helps other teens realize that they're not alone in this. That there are others like
them, who have already overcome what they are battling right now. And that it's not impossible for
them to win the fight. Many people will think, there are too many kids in the world to really make a
difference, and suicide is only an issue when children are treated poorly. In another article Stacy
Khadaroo quotes Jill Harkavy–Friedman, senior director of research at the American Foundation for
Suicide Prevention in New York, "If people oversimplify youth suicide and always link it to
bullying, parents might think, 'Oh, my child is not being bullied, so my child is not at risk,'"(
Khadaroo 1). You need to be aware of suicide symptoms and, if families would sit down and talk
with their children about this, suicide rates should drop. That's all it takes a conversation, no
fundraising, just a simple talk. After, the chances of your child telling you if they've been having
suicidal thoughts will rise increasingly. "Any mention of suicide or death must be taken seriously.
Often parents, other adults, and friends ignore these potential cries for help and only recognize that
they should have done something after a teen has attempted or committed suicide"( Teen Suicide 1).
If parents were aware of the symptoms and talked to their children about suicide prevention, many
teens and

The Issue Of Suicide And Suicide
The topic I chose to elaborate on as a criminal act in some countries but considered deviant or
conventional in others is the issue of suicide from the basis of attempt and assisted. While suicide is
a very enigmatic and incomprehensible subject for many, it becomes the area of focus on how
criminal it becomes to take one's life or aid in the process. How in control is someone of their life
that it becomes a tolerable decision and even supportive in some instances by medical professions.
Is it possible for someone to decide the fate of another and encourage the process, and what
undertakings encourage this decision so much so that it is an allowable practice in some cultures? I
find this topic extremely intriguing because most countries have a diverse opinion on suicide,
assisted suicide and how each considers these actions immoral, criminal or justifiable. Two radically
different perceptions of suicide to a nation I would like to focus on would be North Korea and
Switzerland. North Korea holds an average of suicide rates considerably lower than to most other
countries. This motivation is because of the substantial burden suicide puts on the surviving families
in that the government can purge or ostracize relatives due to the strict and unforgiving nature of
their social pressures. Many are reluctant to cause that sort of strain and weightiness on suffering
families that suicide is rarely an option for this country inhabits. Switzerland is a region that allows

Depression does not only come from people with disabilities. Anyone can feel depressed.
Depression may come from a lack of feeling appreciated by one's peers or one 's family. In the film
the Breakfast club, there exists an epitome of a depressed character. In the film the character Brian
considers shooting himself. Brian's desire was caused by his failing grade on a major
assignment.Throughout the film, Brian act as a nice and intelligent young man. He does not stand
out as mentally disabled person or a troublesome youth. Yet Brian still has depression. His
depression stems from bullies constantly harassing him for his imperfections, which damages his
self–esteem and confidence in himself. It also stems from his parents putting very high expectations
on him. The parents do not appear that frequently in the film, though later in the film Brian
describes them as people who give him pressure. They make him feel that he must succeed
academically to be accepted into a prestigious college. In order to feel fulfilled in life, Brian feels he
must live up to the standard that his parents set for him. In his explanation for having the gun, Brian

Interpersonal Theory Of Suicide And Suicide

  • 1. Interpersonal Theory Of Suicide And Suicide Evaluate some of the factors that might contribute to a person engaging in suicidal behaviour. Suicide is the wilful taking of one's own life. Suicide is prevalent and affects people of all ages and cultures. In the UK male population suicide is now the biggest killer of middle–aged males overtaking diseases such as cancer and heart disease. A major predictor of engaging in suicidal behaviour is depression. Furthermore, it was found that 15% of clinically depressed patients would take their own lives. (HOLT). Those are only statistics but they can in no way describe the misery in which people find themselves. There are many differing factors that contribute to a person engaging in suicidal behaviour such as loss, history of mental disorder and environmental factors. There are also many theories of suicide that integrate these established risk factors such as the interpersonal theory of suicide. The interpersonal theory of suicide was developed by psychologist Thomas Joiner. This theory attempts to understand the reasoning behind in suicidal behaviour. According to the theory, "the simultaneous presence of thwarted belongingness and perceived burdensomeness produce the desire for suicide." (Thomas E. Joiner Jr. [et al.]2009). Belongingness is believed to be an essential need, for an individual 's psychological health and welfare. For example, social isolation is regularly reported by those who die by suicide previous to death. An individual may also feel that they are ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 3. The Theory Of Suicide And Suicide Since scientific evidence showed that suicide rates skyrocket progressively across all age: children and adolescent (McClure, 1994), Middle–age (Manton et al., 1987) and the elderly (Draper, 1996), studying suicide have become an important issue in sociology. Suicide is a complex issue which may combine several factors such as development factors, social factors, and culture factors (Goldsmith, 2002). However, Durkheim (1897) provided a classical model including four types of suicide: altruistic suicide, fatalistic suicide, egoistic suicide and anomic suicide based on simplistic way the strength of social network. Indeed, this method was scientific proven by other scholars (Bearman, 1991; Stack, 1994). Even though he made a big progress on typology of suicide, there are some limitations such as attempted suicide from women (Kushner and Sterk, 2005) and the homeless suicide (Fitzpatrick et.al., 2007) and religious affiliation (Stack, 2013) have been raised. This essay will argue that the effectiveness of Durkheim's method compared with recent studies is not effective to study suicide, as there are some limitations for applying Durkheim's concept to investigate suicide behaviors. For example, Durkheim's method is lack of supporting evidences from individual studies such as high rate suicides of the homeless or attempted suicides from women. Therefore, comparing to recent studies, it should be reformed by combing individual studies and group studies to get the full scope ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 5. Durkheim 's Suicide And Suicide Throughout this essay, we will be looking a Durkheim's analysis of suicide and whether his ideas on suicide were right in his time, and whether they are still relevant in today's society. Emile Durkheim described 'suicide' as a term "applied to any death which is the direct or indirect result of a positive or negative act accomplished by the victim himself, which he knows will produce this result" (Durkheim, Suicide: a Study in Sociology, originally published 1897, 1970). Positive acts were acts that were undertaking with the intention to produce death. Negative acts were actually the distinct lack of survival acts undertaken, with the knowledge that without these acts, death would be the result. As far as Durkheim was concerned, although suicide itself is a very individual act, the reasoning behind suicide was due to predominantly social factors (Durkheim 1970, p44). Suicide was sociological, not psychological. His research was based not on the personality traits of those who had committed suicide, but instead at the suicide rates of different countries compared to the social factors that link the countries together (Durkheim 1970, p40). Before discussing the social factors that affect suicide rates, Durkheim attempted to narrow down the ideas behind the reasoning of individual suicides and the level of suicide rates. One proposal to explain the suicide rate was the environment, such as the climate or conditions. Durkheim agreed, after analysing Europe that the suicide rate ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 7. Suicide And Suicide In America The suicide levels in America have now reached crisis levels. If suicide were a disease, it would be discussed on social media, the news and around the water cooler. People would be in a panic wondering how to counteract the "disease" and escape the clutches of it within their own personal lives. Doctors would appear on talk shows and the news educating the public on what they can do to prevent "suicide" from affecting their own lives. It would be labeled the epidemic taking out even the strongest among us in our modern generation. However, suicide isn't a disease per say. It can be a symptom of a disease, such as depression. However, it in and of itself is only the embodiment and end–result of the despair and hopelessness that many people in America live with on a daily basis. Perhaps, if it was treated like a contagious, preventable disease, and not something to be ashamed of, less Americans would be meeting their end via suicide and instead seek the help they need to get better. What The Statistics Say About Suicide in America: Aaron Kheriaty, director of the Medical Ethics Program at Cal–Irvine, wrote in his article First Things, that the "suicide crisis in America has reached epidemic proportions." Suicide rates have continued to grow coast–to–coast in both urban and rural areas, and have affected the old and young alike. Amazingly, suicide rates have climbed so high that for the first time since the 1930s, the life expectancy of Americans has declined. When you think ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The access for committing suicide must be restricted to young adults. Life as a teenager may not be as easy as some people might think. Suicide may be what teenagers believe will be best for them. Young adults think it is the solution to all of their problems and stress. It can also be caused by a series of emotions. There are many complications that teenagers might be facing thinking they cannot be solved. Depression is the most common cause of teenage suicide. There are teens that might want to "socially fit in, academically fit in, and act responsibly." (About Teen). Teenagers might have a low self esteem and feel hopeless and worthless, causing them to kill themselves for feeling that they are not good enough for anything. Teens might be dealing with bisexuality or homosexuality in an environment that is unsupportive. Breaking up with a boyfriend or girlfriend can be traumatic for some teens. Kids might be having a poor relationship with their families and peers. There might be emotional, physical or sexual abuse towards them. Teens might be victims of bullying. • 11. Suicide And Suicide Adults usually tell young people that, "the teenage years are the best years of your life." But ironically, life for many young people is a heart breaking battle full of mixed messages and contradictory demands from parents, teachers, coaches, employers, friends and oneself. Growing up involves finding the link between independence and reliance on others and this can be really confusing. It can lead to stress, which may eventually lead to serious depression for young people ill–equipped to cope, communicate and solve problems. The social pressures experienced by students in the tertiary institutions and graduate studies continue to increase, as well as the prevalence of mental illness in college students (Pedersen et al., 2014). The pressures that come with higher education, bring about high anxiety rates, feelings of failure, stress, suicidal ideation, and depression. Therefore it is forthcoming that the treatment and screening options for depression and suicidal ideation be given more attention. Often more extreme social and academic pressures, can increase anxiety and depression in students (Potter et al., 2004). And so some universities have support groups formed on campuses to help students. But the question is, "Do the students patronize them?" Emory University (2015) suggests that there are specific risk factors for university students in association with suicide, including academic pressures, use of drugs and alcohol, decreased social ... • 13. Teen Suicide And Suicide Recent studies have shown a rise in both teen suicides and self–harm among adolescent girls. Suicide among adolescent girls may occur as a result of mental disorders, drug misuse, cultural, family and social situations, genetics, and most of all, cyberbullying (Ehmke). Based on a 2015 study, about 20% of adolescent girls in the U.S. consider suicide and between 5% and 8% of them attempt suicide each year (Ehmke). In 2014 alone, 150 girls out of 10 million, between the ages of ten and fourteen, committed suicide due to cyberbullying among other related factors (Graham). Medical experts warn that excessive social media and smartphone use may lead to cyberbullying. Most victims of cyberbullying often experience a great deal of stress and anxiety leading to suicidal ideation (Ehmke). An analysis by Jean Twenge, in The Atlantic, confirms that cyberbullying is more strongly related to suicidal thoughts in adolescents than traditional bullying (Twenge). Some estimates suggest that – depending on the country of origin – between 5% and 20% of adolescent girls are victims of physical, verbal or exclusion–based bullying, while 15% to 30% of them are victims of cyberbullying (Twenge). The relationship between cyberbullying and suicide has only been explored in a few studies, but Jean Twenge's analysis strongly suggests that cyberbullying is a major risk factor for suicide ideation in adolescent girls (Twenge). The new analysis by Jean Twenge tests this evidence by reviewing all ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

His dad was working two jobs and seemed frazzled and angry most of the time. Whenever he and Ethan talked, it usually ended in yelling. Ethan had just found out he'd failed a math test, and he was afraid of how mad and disappointed his dad would be. In the past, he always talked things over with his girlfriend – the only person who seemed to understand. But they'd broken up the week before, and now Ethan felt he had nowhere to turn. Ethan later went on to seek out his dad's gun with which to attempt to take his life"(Tracy). Every year more teens are dying by one thing, which is suicide. Why? Sometimes teens feel useless and worthless. Suicide is not something to joke about. If someone you know has joked about taking his or her life, they may not be joking. We need to educate ourselves about how serious the problem is, why teens would consider suicide, and what we can do if we know someone who's considering suicide. How bad can it be? Many teens may not even know how serious suicide can possibly be. Suicide can't be taken as a joke. • 19. The Suicide And Suicidal Suicide Emile Durkheim once stated that suicide is, "all cases of death resulting directly or indirectly from a positive or negative act of the victim himself, which he knows will produce this result" (Jones, 1986). However, suicidal ideation is considered when an individual has thoughts or feelings of suicide, but does not attempt or complete suicide. Suicidal gesture, is when the individual has attempted the act of ending their life, if they were to be accidentally successful, then the suicide is completed (Leming & Dickson, 2016). A completed suicide is when an individual has successfully ended their life by their own actions. However, in our book it states that, "Suicide gestures are motivated by a need for aid and support from others, whereas completed suicides are acts of resignation" (Leming & Dickson, 2016, p. 309). What can be deduced is that suicide gestures are actions that are made to create focus onto the individual; a plea for help. Not always is this the case. Many individuals who make suicidal gestures are not pleading for help; instead they are attempting to complete suicide, but fail to do so. An example of a suicide gesture would be when a person slices their wrists, far below the fatal area of compromise. Another example is seen in the Clint Eastwood movie, Million Dollar Baby. In this movie, the lead actress Maggie Fitzgerald, played by Hilary Swank, is a boxer whom, during a match, is knocked down and she falls on the stool, breaking her neck (Eastwood, C., 2005). Maggie is paralyzed from the neck down and finds herself depressed and miserable. She attempts to take her life by biting down on her tongue, hoping it would kill her or get the attention of someone. And it did, her trainer, Eddie Scrap–Iron Dupree, played by Morgan Freeman euthanizes her with a lethal dose injection (Eastwood, C., 2005). • 21. Suicide In Elder Suicide Elder Suicide Throughout the years suicide rates have increased and is a significant public health issue. According to the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention, suicide is the 10th leading cause of death in the United States. However, suicide rates are high among the elderly, yet research on suicide prevention in older adults remains neglected. According to the American Psychological Association, the number of Americans aged 65 and older is projected to double from 46 million to more than 98 million by 2060. For example, there has been improvements in medical technology, healthcare services, universal health care, and research. It is evident that Americans are living longer but does our society do enough to help the elderly? Although, older adults tend to be more satisfied with their lives more than younger people that is not always the case .For those who are suffering from mental health issues, there is a limited supply and improper access to psychiatric treatment which leaves older adults underdiagnosed and undertreated. According to the American Psychological Association, one in four adults ages 65 and older experiences a mental health problem such as depression, anxiety, schizophrenia or dementia. This is quite alarming because it is known that people with mental illness already receive poor care. Poor care combined with living in a society where aging is shamed causes a major concern.Negative stereotypes and attitudes are directed toward the elderly. For ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 23. Suicide Suicide is the act of taking away one's own life. Suicide, to me, is one's irrational desire to die. This is because suicide can never be a solution to end problems. Suicide, in my opinion is a permanent solution to a temporary problem. This is because every problem that we face definitely has its own solution. There will always be a way to solve a problem. Suicide is a sign of major depression. Only cowards will take suicide as a solution and will never think of an alternative solution towards his/hers problem. It is estimated that over half of all teens suffering from depression will attempt suicide at least once, and of those teens, roughly seven percentages will succeed on the first try. It has become paramount that teenager nowadays commit suicide just to escape from problem without thinking rationally and made it a norm as its solution towards the problem faced. Teenagers are especially vulnerable to the threat of suicide, because in addition to increased stress from school, work and peers, teens are also dealing with hormonal fluctuations that can complicate even the most normal situations. Due to these social and personal changes, teens are also at higher risk for depression, which can also increase feelings of despair and the desire to commit suicide. • 27. Suicide And Suicide In America While society is failing, hurting, and falling deeper into the pit of desperation, our education system is spiraling downward with it. According to the American Association of Suicidology, over five thousand adolescents, aged 12 to 24, commit suicide each year. It is the third biggest killer of teenagers in our country (MHA). The American Foundation for Suicide prevention shows us the heartbreaking reality of this monster in our own state. This year, 433 Iowans took their own life (AFSP). On average, one of our own will fall into desperation and end their life, breaking hundreds of hearts with their own, every 20 hours (AFSP). On my 19th birthday, September 15, 2017, the silent screams of my classmate Justin were finally heard as they echoed throughout our community. The class clown, the star athlete, the boy that everyone loved, was gone. He is one of thousands. In our home state, high school students' second leading cause of death is this monster we call suicide. Nobody is hearing their silent screams for help. Is there a need for an education justice movement in our educational system? The Jason Foundation's statistics give a clear answer. Every day in our nation, over 3,400 high school students attempt to take their own life (YSS). Read that again: every day in our nation, over 3,400 high school students attempt to take their own life. This is the loudest cry for help our nation has ever heard. Students in schools all have different cultures, talents, and views that make them unique from one another. Schools feel full of culture due to diversity. A student's voice helps a school become a wonderful and lively place to learn. However, what happens when a student silences their voice for ever by killing themselves? When a student dies in an accident, schools can mourn the death as a random occurrence. However, when a student kills themselves, a school feels guilty as they mourn. The teachers feel that they failed to help the student who was suicidal. The students feel bad for not knowing the student. Those who are responsible in some way are conflicted inside by guilt. These people cannot fully live with themselves because they know that they caused a death. If a school truly wants to know more about diversity, they know the outcast. They must ask, why are these people suicidal? They must also ask what can be done to help them? Today suicide is one of the most prevalent causes of death for teenagers in the United states. • 37. The Death Of Suicide And Suicide August ??, 2015 Suicide is an occurrence in life that society does not want to talk about. Social knowledge is minimal at best about how to approach communication with those affected by suicide. The stigma about suicide is vastly misunderstood, unfounded and should not exist. Learning about suicide is very important not only for society but for those who have to suffer and live with the "social blight" society has created about this sad problem. There are various reasons for attempted suicide such as mental illness, anxiety, depression, and the struggles of life in general as the list goes on. The bridge between life and death is knowledge, compassion and perseverance. According to American Association of Suicidology – AAS website, there were approximately 1.3 million suicide attempts in 2013. That is one every 24 seconds. Suicide ranked 10th as a cause of death; Homicide ranked 16th. The elderly (ages 65 and older) made up 13.75% of the population; they accounted for 16.37% of all suicides in the US. There is one suicide for every estimated 4 suicide attempts in the elderly. (CDC) There was about one elderly suicide every 80 minutes. There were about 18.2 suicides each day (6,648 suicides) among those 65 and older. The second leading cause of death for 15–24 year olds in 2013 was suicide. The third leading cause was homicide. • 39. Suicide And Suicide Interventions On The Drink Of Suicide Helping individuals suffering from suicidal ideations and attempts at self–harm calls upon a social worker's ethical obligation to service. According to the NASW Code of Ethics, "social workers' primary goal is to help people in need and address social problems" (National Association of Social Workers, 2008). A way to fulfill this duty is by giving first responders the tools necessary to adequately talk with people in crisis and on the brink of suicide. "Considered a preventable cause of death, suicide is a major public health concern in many industrial and post–industrial countries, and one of the three leading causes of death worldwide among individuals from 15 to 44 years of age" (Hoy, Natarajan, & Petra, 2016). Often times individuals in crisis will come in contact with first responders either by contacting emergency services themselves or from a call placed by a family member or concerned citizen. According to research by Gould et al. (2013), "to address the global tragedy of nearly one million deaths by suicide worldwide, public health interventions with widespread capacity to reach at–risk populations are needed" (Gould et al., 2013). One way to attain this goal is by training dispatchers, law enforcement officers, paramedics, and firefighters on the current evidence based practices for suicidal crisis intervention. • 41. The Prevention Of Suicide In Aboriginal Suicide INTRODUCTION In the past, aboriginal suicide has been addressed the same way as non–aboriginal populations in both national and provincial suicide prevention approaches (Health Canada, 2013; Hunter & Harvey, 2002; MacNeil, 2008). However, these approaches are not feasible to generalize throughout the aboriginal population since this population has an increased amount of historical trauma and ongoing issues that these strategies do not consider (Elliott–Farrelly, 2004). Many situations have occurred that makes it evident that these two populations need separate suicide prevention strategies and at large, the Aboriginal population needs to be addressed immediately. This paper will address the background issues of the increased rate of suicide within aboriginal communities. It will then discuss a policy statement that is feasible for the prevention of suicide within the aboriginal youth population. The policy to be discussed is an in–school program to educate individuals on Aboriginal suicide and prevention. This school–based approach uses an inclusive liberalism ideology to inform students about the risks and warning signs of suicide. In addition, the results of the class consultation will be addressed to discuss the strengths and limitations of this approach. Therefore, this paper addresses a feasible policy that will prevent suicide within aboriginal youth. • 45. Suicide And The Death Of Suicide Suicide, a Permanent Solution to a Temporary Problem Good afternoon, I'm Jasmyne here to talk about suicide and how big of a problem it is. Suicide is defined as an act of one intentionally killing themselves. Why is suicide such a big problem? Well, suicide takes the lives of nearly 40,000 Americans every year; also it is more likely someone will die from suicide than from homicide. For every two people killed by homicide, three people die of suicide. Children young as 10 years of age have even committed suicide. 1 in 65,000 children ages 10 to 14 die by suicide each year. Children, only 10 years old have taken their own lives. Young children, with decades ahead of them, their whole life ended by hanging or shooting themselves. Along with the deaths of suicide being greater than homicide, there are 2 times as many deaths due to suicide than HIV/AIDS. The death of suicide though, it is the 3rd leading cause of death for 15 to 24–year–olds and 2nd for 24 to 35–year–olds. Why is it that a preventable death is has such a higher rate than an unpreventable one? People have many reasons to commit suicide. Some do it to stop the pain; they believe that the problems in their lives will never get better. Tiffanie DeBartolo states, "Did you really want to die? No one commits suicide because they want to die. Then why do they do it? Because they want to stop the pain." Or, others do it because they feel like that they worthless. • 47. Suicide And Suicide : Solution To Preventing Teen Suicide Preventing Teen Suicide According to the World Health Organization, "Suicide has surpassed homicide to become the second leading cause of death among ten to twenty–nine–year–olds; in 2012, suicide claimed the lives of more than five–thousand people within this age bracket" (Onieal 14). Five–thousand young people felt that the weight of the problems they were faced with was too much to handle, and suicide was the only solution. As a teen who struggled with clinical depression and anxiety, this is an issue that is very real to me. So many of these suicides could have been prevented if we were more aware of how many teens are struggling with depression, anxiety, and other mental illnesses, and offered our support and strength to those who feel too weak to hold on any longer. There are a lot of pressures on teens in today's society, such as achieving good grades, managing a heavy school load, parents getting divorced, break–ups with boyfriends and girlfriends, trying to conform to the standards of beauty we see on social media, bullies at school, and functioning with not nearly enough of sleep. When combined, these pressures can be so stressful that they can cause serious anxiety and mental illness. Janis Whitlock, director of the Cornell Research Program on Self–Injury and Recovery says, "If you wanted to create an environment to churn out really angsty people, we've done it. It's that they're in a cauldron of stimulus they can't get away from, or don't want to get away from, or don't know how to get away from." One of the most effective ways to prevent suicide is to provide awareness and educate students, parents, school officials, community members and peers on how to identify suicidal signs (Shireen, Janapana, Rehmatullah, Temuri, Azim 210). When someone commits suicide, we often hear things like, "I never saw it coming," or "they seemed fine." When someone is struggling and nobody notices, it makes them feel unloved and like no one cares about them, which can cause suicidal thoughts. If we were more aware of signs of depression, anxiety, or suicidal behaviors, we could make somebody struggling feel loved, supported, and hopeful, and encourage them to seek out professional help. Statistically, suicide in the second leading cause of death for those ages ten to twenty–four and around 3,470 people grades ninth to twelfth attempt suicide each day in the United States (Youth Suicide Statistics 1). The reason for these people wanting to take their life is unknown, however, divorce of parents, formation of a new family, or moving to a new community, are common reasons for suicide. On the other hand, those who battle depression or develop depression increase the risk of a suicide attempt. People may think that everything is going wrong and dying is the only solution; but people will always be willing to help. Suicide is a permanent solution to a temporary problem and nothing is worth taking your own life over. In Willa Cather's short story "Paul's Case", the main character, Paul, is clearly unhappy with his own life as well as his home life. Paul lost his mother and has an unstable relationship with his father. He dreads going home, as Cather explains: "...the hopeless feeling of sinking back forever into ugliness and commonness that he had always had when he came home" (Cather 108). This quote expresses the hatred and disgust that Paul has towards his home and he will do anything to avoid coming home. This book is very relatable and realistic because similar to Paul, many teenagers dislike their home life and would much rather be away from their own family. Distancing yourself from loved ones, family, friends, teachers, coaches, or whoever it may be, can be an early sign of depression (Suicide in Children and Teens 1). Paul may or may not suffer from depression, but either way, his death could have easily been prevented if Paul had a more positive outlook on life. While homelife has an enormous impact on someone's emotions, life outside of home may be even more important. According to Suicide in Children and teens, rebellious behavior such as constant lying may be a sign of suicidal person. "When questioned by the Principal as to why he was there, Paul stated, politely enough, that he wanted to come back to school. The most common suicide risk factors include: depression, substance abuse, a personal or family history of suicide attempts, sexual orientation, stressful life events, and both physical and sexual abuse (Aldrich & Cerel, 2009). Further risk factors to identify are suicidal behaviors or symptoms. If you can't imagine a situation in which killing yourself seems like the best option, you simply haven't suffered very much. Suicide is, in a sense, the last form of protest against suffering that is too strong to make life worth living. Sometimes that suffering is purely organic – there's something wrong with your body and it's caused by nothing related to society. But sometimes, suicide is a protest against being forced to function and give support to a society that is so unfair and unequal that it's not worth staying alive. Suicide is a perplexing issue with numerous aspects. Instead of giving in to a narcissistic apprehension based perspective in which we trust suicide is never right for all individuals, we ought to educate ourselves more about the reasons for suicide and how best to support individuals at danger of suicide. A sweeping conviction that suicide is never right, or alright just in instances of serious agony in end–of–life circumstances, is stating that suffering individuals have an obligation to their family, companions, and society to keep on living in intolerable conditions, instead of saying that society needs to work harder to make individuals' lives endurable in the event that it needs individuals not to submit ... • 69. The Suicide And Suicide Prevention Suicide is defined as death by an act of self–infliction as an effort to end one's life. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (2013), suicide was the tenth leading cause of death for all ages among Americans in 2013. It is the second leading cause of death among fifteen to twenty– nine year olds globally stated by World Health Organization (2015). Suicide being ranked that high on the lists of causes for deaths is astonishing because each of those deaths was preventable. Having awareness, knowledge, and the resources about suicide and suicide prevention must be utilized to provoke social change in individuals, families, and communities. The purpose of this teaching plan is to teach about suicide and suicide preventive strategies to adolescences ages twelve to nineteen years, using the humanistic learning theory and health promotion model, to a group in the identity versus role confusion psychosocial development stage and formal operational stage of cognitive development. Population Identified Adolescent suicide is an increasing mental health concern. Adolescents are considered a high–risk group in view of the fact that suicide is the third leading cause of death among the ages ten to fourteen and the second leading cause of death among ages fifteen to thirty– five (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 2013). Alarming statistics such as these have bought enough attention to add "Adolescent Health" as a new topic in Healthy People 2020 ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 71. The Issue Of Suicide And Suicide Suicide has been an issue that has been in the world for generations and sadly, more to come. The way this problem was mostly seen as in the past, was an act of pride and honor, as seen by the Japanese samurai tradition of Seppuku. Same with Ancient Greece and Ancient Rome, the history of suicide in their community, was out of pride. Prefer death over dishonor and rather die than poor health being seen weak. However, in present time, most people commit themselves due to problems they have in themselves caused by outside forces. People would commit in order to avoid a situation or problem occurring in their lives. This issue of suicide still persists due to depression, which is the most common reason of suicide, but also someone could have a mental illness as well. Society and media has a huge impact on why suicide has been around for a long time, and it still persists. Dolefully, "In the past 15 years, there has been a 22% increase in the national suicide rate in the United States,1 while the total number of psychiatric hospital beds in the United States decreased from 34 to 22 beds per 100 000 residents"( Robert D. Gibbons, Kwan Hur, J. John Mann) This could possibly be one big reason why this issue is still increasing in rate. The Suicide rate has been drastically increasing through the years, but it seems that some hospitals are reducing aid to the one's going through depression or mental problems. • 73. Suicide Prevention : The Dangers Of Teen Suicide And Suicide Teen Suicide is dangerous. You might think your child's not at risk, that they are completely fine. Think again, everyone's child is at risk. Child and teen suicide is only growing and it's increasing risk doesn't seem to be slowing down. Teen Suicide Prevention is the way to protecting our younger generation from fighting depression. Through reminding our kids their life is worth it, the amazing Sources of Strength program, and through telling our kids the dangers of teen depression, we can resolve teen suicide. Studies have shown that children who know of a death by suicide have a higher rate of committing it themselves. We have reason to believe this because when someone dies, we dedicate a lot to them. We give them a huge funeral in ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Sources of Strength helps other teens realize that they're not alone in this. That there are others like them, who have already overcome what they are battling right now. And that it's not impossible for them to win the fight. Many people will think, there are too many kids in the world to really make a difference, and suicide is only an issue when children are treated poorly. In another article Stacy Khadaroo quotes Jill Harkavy–Friedman, senior director of research at the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention in New York, "If people oversimplify youth suicide and always link it to bullying, parents might think, 'Oh, my child is not being bullied, so my child is not at risk,'"( Khadaroo 1). You need to be aware of suicide symptoms and, if families would sit down and talk with their children about this, suicide rates should drop. That's all it takes a conversation, no fundraising, just a simple talk. After, the chances of your child telling you if they've been having suicidal thoughts will rise increasingly. "Any mention of suicide or death must be taken seriously. Often parents, other adults, and friends ignore these potential cries for help and only recognize that they should have done something after a teen has attempted or committed suicide"( Teen Suicide 1). If parents were aware of the symptoms and talked to their children about suicide prevention, many teens and ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 75. The Issue Of Suicide And Suicide The topic I chose to elaborate on as a criminal act in some countries but considered deviant or conventional in others is the issue of suicide from the basis of attempt and assisted. While suicide is a very enigmatic and incomprehensible subject for many, it becomes the area of focus on how criminal it becomes to take one's life or aid in the process. How in control is someone of their life that it becomes a tolerable decision and even supportive in some instances by medical professions. Is it possible for someone to decide the fate of another and encourage the process, and what undertakings encourage this decision so much so that it is an allowable practice in some cultures? I find this topic extremely intriguing because most countries have a diverse opinion on suicide, assisted suicide and how each considers these actions immoral, criminal or justifiable. Two radically different perceptions of suicide to a nation I would like to focus on would be North Korea and Switzerland. North Korea holds an average of suicide rates considerably lower than to most other countries. This motivation is because of the substantial burden suicide puts on the surviving families in that the government can purge or ostracize relatives due to the strict and unforgiving nature of their social pressures. Many are reluctant to cause that sort of strain and weightiness on suffering families that suicide is rarely an option for this country inhabits. Switzerland is a region that allows those ... • 77. Teen Suicide And Suicide In America today, majority of schools have a plethora of diversity. Students in schools all have different cultures, talents, and views that make them unique from one another. Schools feel full of culture due to diversity. A student 's voice helps a school become a wonderful and lively place to learn. Those who are responsible in some way are conflicted inside by ... Depression may come from a lack of feeling appreciated by one's peers or one 's family. In the film the Breakfast club, there exists an epitome of a depressed character. In the film the character Brian considers shooting himself. Brian's desire was caused by his failing grade on a major assignment.Throughout the film, Brian act as a nice and intelligent young man. He does not stand out as mentally disabled person or a troublesome youth. Yet Brian still has depression. His depression stems from bullies constantly harassing him for his imperfections, which damages his self–esteem and confidence in himself. It also stems from his parents putting very high expectations on him. The parents do not appear that frequently in the film, though later in the film Brian describes them as people who give him pressure. They make him feel that he must succeed academically to be accepted into a prestigious college. In order to feel fulfilled in life, Brian feels he must live up to the standard that his parents set for him.
