The document discusses how the creator appealed to their target audience of an indie music magazine through extensive research. This included researching common elements of indie magazines like color palettes, locations, and costumes to incorporate stereotypical aspects that would appeal to fans of the genre. Primary research in the form of interviews also provided feedback used to identify the genre clearly. A range of colors, images of artists in casual clothing, and locations like brick walls were used to attract the target audience and clearly establish the magazine as part of the indie genre.
1. Evaluation Question 5
How did you attract/appeal to your audience?
Research and Planning
During my research and planning, I discovered many techniques and inspirational
ideas to involve within my magazine to appeal to my target audience.
Genre Research
Throughout my genre research, I discovered a lot of elements of my chosen genre
‘Indie’ that are typically used for an indie genre music magazine. Such as; a fixed
house style (stereotypically red, black and white), casual or edgy style costumes
(leather jackets etc.) worn by well known artists or bands and also locations of
images that implicate the genre (for example brick walls, derelict areas etc.) My main
aim was to use these three specific elements as the colours, costumes and locations
will be a large factor in what the reader will be looking for. Therefore appealing to the
target audience.
Technical Magazine Deconstruction
When I did my technical magazine deconstruction research, I established the
features that are usually used for magazine front covers, and contents pages. This
entailed items such as mastheads, sell lines, main images promotions and
competitions that are commonly used on the front cover. However, features such as
masthead main image(s) and a table of content. These features are often used as
they represent the name of the magazine, but also present the magazine to be well
spaced out and eye catching for the audience. This therefore will make it easier for
the target audience to read, but also, items such as the masthead and main images
furthermore establish the genre of the magazine; which increases the appeal to the
target audience. Moreover, i used all of these features within my magazine front
cover and contents page to becoming more appealing to my target audience.
Textual Analysis 1
During my textual analysis research, I identified the use and importance of the
colours, fonts and layouts of the feature I found whilst researching my technical
magazine deconstruction. For most magazines such as ‘Indie’ and ‘NME’ frequently
use a house style (colour palette) that often has 4 colours to it. For example, i
discovered that ‘Indie’ has used the colours yellow, red, black and white. (while,
black and red are stereotypically appealing to the Indie genre). The yellow is the
background and that main sell line of the magazine front cover, moreover, the
colours red, white and black are used for the other features, such as the sell lines
and masthead. This overall catches the eye of the audience as the colours contrast
largely and the stereotypical indie colours therefore appealing to my target audience.
I however used 5 colours for my front cover (yellow, red, white, black and blue) to
2. appeal stereotypically to both genders (yellow and blue are argued to be neutral) and
to also appeal to my indie target audience with the colours red, white and black.
Textual Analysis 2
For my second textual analysis research, i looked at a kerrang magazine front cover.
(kerrang is a rock magazine, however i wanted a broader approach and a wider idea
range in order to make my magazine more professional). The colours that were used
for this front cover are pink, blue, black, yellow and white. Even though these colours
don’t link with the stereotypical indie colours (as it is a rock magazine) i thought that
the use of stereotypical male (blue) and female (pink) colours were interesting as it
showed that the magazine was aimed at both genders in an obvious way, that is why
i wanted to use neutral colours to my magazine. Furthermore, the image location is
in a studio. This presents the importance of the subject as the background isn’t as
important as it is blank. I wanted to use this to give my subject importance and more
attention from the audience. Also, the Kerrang front cover uses an image that is as a
medium shot, this shows the costume and body language of the artist and the image
is the largest item on the cover which therefore is used to attract the audience.
Overall i chose to do the gender and the studio medium shot to bring attention from
my target audience.
Textual Analysis 3
In my third textual analysis research, i discovered that the lighting is a large factor in
creating attention and an eye catching reaction to the audience as in an indie
magazine, key lighting is used most commonly to show the subject and to establish
the genre. Therefore i used key lighting as it showed my subject clearly and became
easy for my target audience to identify the person within the image, moreover
becoming more appealing.
Primary Research
Throughout my primary research, i asked questions about indie magazines to 6
people. They all had similar reactions as they could all clearly identify the genre of
the magazine and why. I took the feedback i received and used to within my
magazine as i wanted my magazine to be more appealing to my target audience by
being easy to identify the genre.
Costume and Props Planning
During my costume and Props planning, i looked at various magazines; such as
NME to complete the ideas for my magazine costume and props. I chose to use
items of clothing such as leather jackets and doc marten boots as they are
commonly presented within the indie genre as they are stereotypically edgy,
therefore appealing to my target audience. Also, the costumes implicate the genre
furthermore appealing to my target audience.
Font and colour Research
3. Here was where i chose the masthead and the name of my magazine. I chose to use
mix as i wanted my magazine to have a large range in artists and to also involve
both genders, therefore being mixed with different elements. It is also simple and
very rememberable which may appeal to my target audience as other music
magazines have names like Q and NME. Short and simple but highly easy to
remember.
Article
In order to create an appealing article for my magazine double page spread, i looked
at a lot of different interviews on youtube to get inspiration. I looked at indie female
artists such as Kate Nash. I did this to create a realistic interview and to have a more
informed idea as to how indie genre artists speak. This therefore appeals to my
target audience.
Location Recce
Before i filled out my location recce i did a lot of research by looking at different indie
magazines to select the right locations in order to appeal to my target audience.
Therefore i used a brick wall, studio and a derelict area as they are commonly used
within the indie magazine genre.
Call Sheet
Even though i only used two of three of my models, i chose to use them exact people
as they are all different in looks and i also wanted to use both male and female
models as it would appeal to my target audience as my target audience is a indie
unisex audience.
