2. I have chosen to compare four different
institutions within the horror genre. The first two
are companies that focus only on the Horror
genre compared to the last two which are global
institutions, better known for their variety in film
genres. By comparing the two, I am able to
discover the different ways in which they attract
their target audience, taking into consideration
the codes and conventions associated with Horror.
3. Previous works include: ‘Ouija’, ‘Paranormal Activity’ and ‘The Purge2’
o Never spend over £5million per production by pioneering a new model
in studio filmmaking. The company aims to produce high-quality micro
budget films
o First-look deal with Universal Pictures, creating more money for
production and advertisement, reaching a mass audience due to the
conglomerate
o Also produced live events including ‘The Blumhouse of Horrors’ and
‘The Purge: Fear of the Night’. This creates a connection with consumer,
allowing them to experience the events themselves, thus making the
films more realistic
Our film is based upon a low budget and therefore would be perfect for
‘Blumhouse Production’ to distribute. Live events would be created from our
narrative, as we aim to reach our target audience on a personal level, making
them believe the events in the trailer could happen to themselves.
4. Previous works include: ‘Dracula’, ‘Women in Black’
o One of the oldest production companies, with vital experience in the
horror industry (old and new)
o More prestigious then others, with well known productions an highly
respected within the film industry
o Within the 1980’s, moved into TV with, ‘Hammer House of Horror’
displaying a different type of horror within each episode
Within our genre of supernatural, Hammer Production would understand
the ways in which the target audience gain pleasure and entertainment
from the genre. With films such as, ‘Women in Black’, they were able to
turn a book into one of the most scariest supernatural films produced. In
addition, by having such a well-known and successful history in the
industry, our film would have extensive advertisement, thus attracting a
mass audience.
5. Previous works include: ‘The Quiet Ones’, ‘Jessabelle’ and ‘Texas Chainsaw
o Formed in 1997, ‘Lionsgate’ has become one of the biggest film companies
in the world
o Its first major box office hit was ‘American Psycho’ in 2000, resulting in the
company distributing and producing film too controversial for other American
Studios
o Although it is an American company, works such as, ‘The Quiet Ones’ is a
British Horror, focusing on a teenage girl who is affected with supernatural
activity
In the past ‘Lionsgate’ has produced and distributed stereotypical horror which
focuses on teenage antagonists. This is very similar to our trailer, set around a
group on teenagers. This means ‘Lionsgate’ already have experience in
reaching a younger audience, being able to produce a highly successful horror
whilst targeting such a specific consumer. In addition, by producing other
genres, the company will understand how a audience will react to a particular
horror, providing more detail into our narrative.
6. Previous works include: ‘OUIJA’, ‘Drag Me to Hell’
o Universal Monsters (Universal Horror). This is the name given to a series of
distinctive horror films made between 1923-1960
o Although this company is known world-wide, they took inspiration from
‘Hammer Productions’ in their early horrors
o Halloween horror nights at universal to attract audience into a authentic
experience
o Famed for success in all genres with only a limited few horror films as they
prefer not to reach outside their comfort zone
o Trusted by audience to produce new and exciting pictures due to previous
horror films
We would benefit from ‘Universal’ distributing or producing our trailer as they
have such a rich history within horror films. The universal monsters were one of
the first movements within the horror genre, creating a loyal and stable mass
audience. This would ensure our trailer would reach our target audience
straight away, as they already gain entertainment from previous ‘Universal’
pictures.
