Anne Elliot Persuasion
A classic work of English literature, Jane Austen's novel, Persuasion, centers on the story of
protagonist, Anne Elliot. Intelligent, kind, and considerate, much of Anne's struggles throughout the
text may be attributed to the ease with which she is persuaded by her family to act as they see fit.
While this may paint the character as being easily manipulated or lacking strong character, it is
argued that a deeper understanding of Anne Elliot as a character may be attained upon closer
analysis of her surroundings, the context within which she was brought up, and her family dynamic.
Born in 1787 (Austen, 1998, p.5), the character of Anne was likely subject to a different
socialization process than a female child born in the twenty–first century. ... Show more content on

More specifically, the theory states that family members profoundly affect each other's thoughts,
feelings, and actions. Furthermore, the theory implies that family members are often interconnected,
seeking each other's attention and approval. Within the context of the novel, profession and marriage
are two ways in which an individual may improve their social status. While Anne often seems to
more easily overlook one's social standing in society (as seen with her willingness to maintain a
relationship with Mrs. Smith) than the rest of her family, it is still clear that she is well aware of the
class systems in place within her society, and the importance of social standing. This is evident upon
her confession that she feels it was not wrong of her to be persuaded by Lady Russell to break off
her relationship with Fredrick Wentworth (Austen, 1998, p.231). As such, when agreeing to marry
Fredrick, it was not her love for him or her strengthened sense of character that allowed her to
accept his proposal, but rather it was his higher position within society that made him deserving of
her. With the above in mind, it can be seen that Anne clearly seeks the approval of her family
members, and that her feelings and beliefs are very much influenced by

Billy Elliot Research Paper
Transitions into new experiences and new phases of life can be problematic with many obstacles to
be overcome by the individual. Changes result in a shift of attitudes, beliefs and values. Set during
the 1984 miners strike, the film "Billy Elliot", directed by Stephen Daldry explores and challenges
embedded traditional, community and family values and beliefs about gender roles, job choices and
the way success is measured.Similarly, Gwen Harwood's poem "Barn Owl", highlights the effects of
transitions in peoples lives through the rebellion of a child against her father, as well as the
dissipation of innocence and the Individual growth of the child. The process of transitions can be

Personal growth can be measured emotionally, spiritually, intellectually, culturally or physically.
Through the process of Billy's transitions he experiences emotional and physical growth. Stephen
Daldry illustrates this exploration of transitions when Tony breaks out into a fight with Mrs
Wilkinson around the kitchen table. Shot reverse shots are employed to emphasize the separation
between Mrs Wilkinson, Billy's family and Billy. A close up of Tony and Jackie respectively reveals
to us that Tony has become the dominant one in the family. This dominance is further reinforced as
Tony asks Mrs Wilkinson, "Have you any idea what we're going through, I have been in a fucking
cell all night and you coming round here talking shite... He's only eleven for fuck sake". This then
cuts to a close up of Billy, who is behind a door, which symbolises the barrier between Billy and his
family as he claims innocently and ironically, "I don't want a childhood, I want to be Ballet dancer",
highlighting Billy's determination to still continue his journey to the Royal ballet school despite the
obstacle of his family. This also highlights the personal emotional growth of Billy in his ability to
confidently express his dreams and aspirations to his family who have constantly hindered his
transition throughout the film. The parallel filming of Billy dancing aggressively to the sounds of a

Persuasion And Anne Elliot
In the novel Persuasion, Anne Elliot was the second daughter of Sir Walter Elliot and was the
heroine in this novel by Jane Austen. Anne had two sisters named Elizabeth and Mary. Elizabeth
was the oldest daughter and was much like her father, being cold and selfish. Unfortunately,
Elizabeth was her father's favorite daughter. Mary was the youngest daughter who was married to a
young man named Charles Musgrove. Anne, being the middle child, was sweet and shy about her
intelligence and was ignored by her father and sister Elizabeth. Anne's father, Sir Walter Elliot, was
a very conceited and vain man because of his good looks and his title of minor nobility. He lived
above his financial means most of the time and rented a big home so others in ... Show more content

The Austen children grew up being encouraged to learn by extensive reading from their father's
library and to be creative thinkers. Jane and her sister were sent to a boarding school so they would
have a formal education. Jane started to write romantic fiction as a young teen. After Jane's father
died, she and her sister had financial difficulties much like the Elliot's did in Persuasion. Jane
Austen's life seems to be closely related to many of the situations and characters in the lives of the
female characters she writes about in her novels. Jane was also persuaded by her father and a female
mentor to not to love a man because they believed he could not provide for her financially and he
was not of a high social status. This situation can be compared to Anne Elliot's character when she
was persuaded by her father and mentor, Lady Russell, to give up her love of and engagement to
Captain Fredrick Wentworth, a British naval officer. They found him to be an unsuitable choice
because of his lack of money and connections in society. Jane Austen wrote about real life issues of
manner, upbringing of children, morality, education, and marriage in a society of high social status
and position. Jane Austen's family was well–respected members of their community, much like the
Elliot family. Jane's status as a single woman did not upset her like other single women. The lack of
a husband allowed her the freedom to concentrate on her novels, and gave her the opportunity to be
a great observer of the actions of those around her, especially in the study of complex classes and
gender relationships which were an important part of life in the early–nineteenth century English

The Upper Class and Miss Anne Elliot Essay
The Upper Class and Miss Anne Elliott
Jane Austen, it appears, seems to be saddened by the decay of England's aristocratic social order.
The study of her main character, Anne Elliot, and her innocent yet intelligent–like persona take her
readers further into the core of her foundation of ethics, and the relation of these to the daunting
traditions of her immediate family and surrounding social circle gives the reader a fresh look at the
importance of class distinction and the clearly perceptible emptiness of the aristocratic society that,
in actuality is believed to have existed in Austen's own life. A close assessment of the development
of Austen's ideals through the course of her novels reveals the fundamental nature of the central ...

The absence of familial love increases in Persuasion, as Anne Elliott, exists in her own perception
apart from what she thinks are the less–appealing characteristics of her family. The distinction
between this novel and her others is that for the first time in Austen's work, the inferior class is
actually superior intellectually, morally and emotionally as compared to the high ranking society.
This book also blatantly criticizes the prominent social class that had been, to some extent, upheld
up to different degrees by at least one character in all of her previous novels.
Anne Elliott acts as the only interpreter of this representation as she sees, with somewhat silent
condescension, the absurd vanity her family is fascinated with. An ideal example of Anne's moral
ethics opposing her father's vain ones occurs when she offers the idea of a high–ranking naval
officer renting their manor while they relocate to Bath. Here Anne spoke –
The Navy, I think, who have done so much for us, have at least an equal claim with any other set of
men, for all the comforts and privileges which any home can give. Sailors work hard enough for
their comforts, we all must allow.
Yet, Sir Walter's biased and inflexible response to Anne's modest and tolerant one, which follows,
demonstrates Austen's

Stereotypes In Billy Elliot
In the film "Billy Elliot" directed by Stephen Daldry, Michael is a thought provoking character
because he is portrayed as both gay and a cross dresser. With the film being set during the 1984–
1985 coal miners strike. Michael lives in Everington, Durham, a small town in north–eastern
England where you're either a "straight girl" or a "straight man" and the community is very "black
and white" and there is no grey area in between area for people like Michael.
In the film "Billy Elliot" Michael is seen to be interested in cross–dressing and frequently dresses up
in his sister's dresses and puts on his mother's makeup (most notably her lipstick). The long shot of
him standing at his door in front of Billy wearing his little sister's dress shows ... Show more content

Along with the struggles of growing up in a community where he doesn't fit the expected "norm" for
male behaviour, Michael has an alcoholic and abusive father who believes heavily in the gender
stereotypes perpetuated throughout the film and disapproves heavily of Michael's behaviour. All this
strain on Michael makes it hard for him to have a "normal childhood" as he struggles with the
challenges of growing up in a community where you don't fit the "mold" of what a man should be
like. This is shown in the scene when he and Billy are wearing tutus and dancing in the boxing hall
and get caught by two angry parents who then proceed to call them both "poofs" and "sissies" for
dancing together. Michael is also seen at the end of the film to have his male partner sitting next to
him. This relates to the audience because at some point in their life everyone feels like they don't fit
in with the majority of their community, whether it is a small difference or a large one people are all
unique but sometimes can feel like they are the only one fighting against the world. In Michael's
case he has to grow up hiding his true self and not being able to express his feelings as the
community he lives in is heavily embedded in traditional gender roles and stereotypes and does not
accept people who don't fit within the "black and white"

For example, when everything seems to go wrong, the music is sad. When Billy and Michael are
dancing in the boxing arena, the music is positive and cheerful. As Billy's father goes into them, the
music stops and there is a tense atmosphere. In the end of the movie, when everything seems to
evolve into Billy's favour, it's a love song that reflects Billy mood. I would say that the theme of the
film is dreams and ambition. If you have dreams and ambition you can go far in life and make
anything work. I also think that the theme is about talent. Everyone has a talent somewhere inside
themselves– it´s just that you have to wait for it to be founded. We can find both of these themes in
the story of Billy Elliot. By chance he discovers his hidden passion for dance, and he really wants to
continue to dance, and at the same time be accepted by his family. Personally I think that the film
Billy Elliot is a good, special and different film from others I have seen. I think that that the theme
of the film was very good, and I think that Billy Elliot is a very good man. Sometimes it was hard to

Characters of Sir Walter Elliot and Anne Elliot in Jane...
The Characters of Sir Walter Elliot and Anne Elliot in Persuasion
In Persuasion, by Jane Austen, there are many exceptional characters. Perhaps two of the most
memorable are Sir Walter Elliot, and his daughter, Anne Elliot. These characters are well shaped and
have something about them that transcends time and social class, enabling readers of the all ages, to
feel they have something in common with them.
Jane Austen has created a very silly, vain man with immense family pride in Sir Walter Elliot. Sir
Walter is extremely proud of his good looks, his family connections and above all, his baronetcy.
The reader is introduced to Sir Walter at the beginning of the novel. Immediately his family pride is
seen and the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
As a result of this, Sir Walter has very unusual opinions of people. Sir Walter's opinions of people
stem from: their personal appearance and their family connections. Because of his concern for
personal appearance, Sir Walter has a low opinion of anyone belonging to the navy, the reason being
:
[it] cuts up a man's youth ... Admiral Baldwin's age.
He holds both Admiral and Mrs. Wallis in the highest regard, however, as they are both very
handsome. The reader is not impressed with Sir Walter's ideas.
Sir Walter is also impressed by people's family connections. He is eager to meet Lady Dalrymple,
not because she is family, but because she is a Viscountess. These opinions Sir Walter holds and his
reasons for acquainting himself with others very much emphasizes that Sir Walter is very conscious
of his baronetcy. His pride is also apparent, as he is condescending to people whom he sees as of
lower social class.
Austen further develops Sir Walter through the actions and dialogue of others. Through the
characters of Admiral Croft and Elizabeth Elliot, the reader's impression of Sir Walter is
strengthened. Admiral Croft remarks to Anne that Sir Walter must be "rather a dressy man for his
time of life" and Elizabeth, again to Anne, says:
One would imagine ...but he abominates them.
Sir Walter's extreme obsession with personal appearance is again emphasized, making him not well
liked.
Finally, Sir Walter's own dialogue condemns him further.

Billy Elliot Film Analysis
Individuals venturing into new transitions could confront obstacles but may also gain significant
rewards. Barriers often obstruct the achievement of goals which bring about growth and change
within oneself and their surroundings. Billy Elliot is a film set in an English town of Evirngton,
England during the 1985 mining strikes. The film depicts a young boy facing the challenge of
overcoming traditional gender stereotypes to pursue his love for ballet. Billy faces extreme adversity
from his family and community that hold traditional values and beliefs. The process of transitioning
into a new phase of life may be confronting but ultimately lead to new understandings of self and
others. Stephen Aldry's Billy Elliot film epitomizes this idea as Billy tries to pursue his passion for
dancing in 1980's England. The obstacles he faces throughout his transition shape his journey
throughout the text. Similarly, Clint Eastwood's novel 'American sniper' explores how transitions
can shape an individual and their relationships with others around them, Where Kyle returns from
his first deployment and reunites with Taya Kyle. Taya immediately notices that her husband has
changed, war has made him moodier and angrier. Yet this transition is yet to be complete.
Billy challenges society's expectations based on gender during this era, as he conflicts against male
stereotypes on gender roles and follows his passion for dance. Billy's transition is represented
through a series of visual and

Billy Elliot Diversity
Billy Elliot, directed by Stephen Daldry, is a coming of age film, filmed in the year 2000. It was set
in the year 1984. The film was set in the North of England, in a village called Everington. The
director made sure that the movie did not go off course and stayed relevant to the time period of the
1980s. I found that the language presented in the film, was relevant to the time period and the
labeling or stereotyping used was very appropriate to the 1980s period. This was because people
were only coming to terms with the change and the diversity of men being gay or females being
lesbian. The four aspects covered in this essay will be on, Billy Elliot and his relationship with his
father. The relationship between Billy Elliot and Mrs. Wilkinson. ... Show more content on

In the movie, Billy was not seen as a normal eleven–year–old boy just because he enjoyed ballet. In
the 1980's gender diversity was not accepted as much as it is now. When he did ballet, Billy's class
was full of female students which were seen as normal and boys were not expected to do any female
activities. Billy did not mind joining the class and he actually enjoyed it. Billy was not very good at
dancing but he eventually found a passion and a fire within him to want to do ballet. One of the
problems that Billy faced was to actually learn how to dance. His body had never had to have been
controlled and every movement in ballet was controlled and precise. Another obstacle was that he
had to deal with the abuse and disgrace from Jackie and Tony who were worried that Billy would
have been seen as a "poof". Jackie and Tony were disgusted when they heard Billy wanted to
become a professional ballet dancer. This made Billy more determined to achieve his dream, not just
to prove his family wrong, but other people who thought that boys shouldn't dance. Billy wanted it
so much that he would practice in secret. The biggest goal was that he had to prove not just to
himself but also to Mrs. Wilkinson that he had the passion to make ballet a lifetime career and the
willingness to learn to join the Royal Ballet

Hollow Men Critical Analysis
Eliot's Hollow Men: A Depiction of Human Weakness
Analysis of desperation and man's weakness projects throughout the poem "The Hollow Men." As
the focus of the author, he succeeds in depicting and registering the mood of personal weakness.
Through reading the poem, there is an air of despair, weakness, and disappointment. It is imperative
to acknowledge that the poem presents an order of events that are effective towards the depiction of
human weakness. For example, weakness is shown when the men are trapped in the desert in a
given bank of a river that is daunting to cross. The odd troubles of their current predicament
describe to perpetuate human weakness. This paper will evaluate human weakness as propagated by
the poem, "The Hollow Men."
"Is it like this, in death's other kingdom, waking alone" is an important quote that depicts human
weakness in the face of various fears (Bush 20). For example, weaknesses express itself through the
curiosity of the characters as to whether or not heaven is as bad as their current environment.
Specifically, the notion of loneliness is evident in the quote as an important aspect circumventing
human weakness. Isolation is one of the feelings that follow. As such Sangi, Soomro, and Gopang
emphasize that Elliot is successful in showing that human beings are devoid of the evident qualities
of strength, determination and moral strength (473). Accordingly, in line with the heading, people
behave like empty bodies that lack the positive virtues

Anne Elliot Persuasion Essay
Our heroine of Jane Austen's Persuasion, Anne Elliot, is one of the greatest, and most appealing,
woman presented in all of Jane Austen's novels. We are introduced to the novel where Anne Elliot,
eight years after breaking her engagement to Captain Wentworth, has a developed unique character
as Austen's female heroine: she is the daughter of a bankrupt baronet, a 27 –year–old spinster, an
introvert, and an easy victim to persuasion. Such qualities would not make Anne a marriageable
young lady, but they do not define Anne's whole well–being. Without even realizing it, Anne Elliot
turns herself into becoming one of the most charming women in the novel through what she already
possesses in her character.
The Regency era of England shows how considerate it was women to accomplish many qualities to

Examples Of Prejudice In Billy Elliot
Prejudice is a kind of mindset that will lead to criticizing others who did not follow this mindset. A
child that live surrounded by a society full of prejudice will definitely affect his/her views to the

pursuing his dreams to be a ballet dancer and put him through a hard time even though he is so

It makes harder and tougher for Billy to develop his identity , potential and dream due to the
acceptance for the middle class to accept someone from working class like Billy to become a

had called to inform that he cannot go for the Royal Ballet School audition due to Tony's court day.
She is envious and thinks that Billy's status is too low to join the school. The librarian also have the
perception on class status as the tone she used to reject Billy when Billy is trying to borrow a book
which not valid for a junior ticket is not polite and contempt.
In a nutshell, it is obviously seen that Billy's perspective is influence by the prejudices around him
which had caused him think negatively because he is oppressed by gender stereotype, class divisions
and the strike. But at the end, his love of dance and determination and perseverance help him break
free from oppressors and change his family and community minds thus decide to help him to
achieve his dream. Finally, the effect from the prejudice is overcome as Billy get the supports from
his family, his community and Mrs. Wilkinson who never lets Billy give up and he managed to be a

How is the concept of 'into the world' conveyed in the film Billy Elliot?
People encounter different experiences and respond to the individually. These personal experiences
may result in growth, change or other consequences. There are a variety of pathways and elements
which enables for the transition of an individual into a new world. An individual's determination to

An individual's determination can inspire them to transition into a new world. In the opening scene,
the slow motion shot of Billy jumping up and down on the bed with a close up of his jovial face
reveals his natural talent for dance and feel for music. The flower wallpaper in his bedroom

Cognitive Dissonance Theory
Leon Festinger created the cognitive dissonance theory as an attempt to explain why people desire
to have consistency between their behaviors and actions. Cognitive dissonance is the distressing
mental state people feel when they find themselves doing things that don't fit with what they know,
or having opinions that do not fit with other opinions they hold (Festinger, 1957; as cited in Griffin,
2009). Thus, people are motivated to change either their behavior or their belief when feelings of
dissonance arise. Dissonance is reduced using three mental strategies. Selective exposure is the
strategy used before a decision is made. The premise of this strategy is to avoid information that is
likely to increase dissonance. The second ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The difference between condition one and three is that condition three allowed the participants to
self–affirm after finding out their verdict was in disagreement with the other group members.
Festinger argues that the lack of choice adds consonant cognitions which reduce the overall amount
of dissonance that otherwise would be experienced (Festinger, 1957, 1958; as cited in Matz &
Woods, 2005). Additionally, the opportunity to self–affirm strengthens self–worth and thereby
reduces the dissonance created when people's actions threaten their personal integrity (Simon,
Greenberg, & Brehm, 1995; as cited in Matz & Woods, 2005). Thus, Matz and Woods hypothesize
that dissonance will be reduced by the lack of choice and the opportunity to self–affirm. The results
show low levels of discomfort in the lack of choice and self–affirmation conditions, providing an
explanation of the kinds of strategies people use to reduce dissonance. Study three introduces an
interpersonal strategy introduced by Festinger: changing one's own attitude to align with others'
opinions (Festinger, 1957; as cited in Matz & Woods, 2005). Building off of Festinger's idea of
changing one's attitude three conditions are used in this study. The three strategies used are: (a)
changing one's own attitudes to agree with others in the group, (b) influencing others to change their
opinion, and (c) joining a different, attitudinally congenial group. The end results show

clever and quirky moments. However I lost interest around halfway through the film and could not

The clay only gave the story more credibility, others might differ in their opinion about that, but I
think if it were played by real actors it would be less believable, (saying the tale itself was based on

How Does Jane Austen Use Anne Elliot Respond To Peer...
In the excerpt from Jane Austen's novel Persuasion, Anne Elliot is faced with a decision normally
seen as a dream come true by nineteenth century women of marrying her knighted cousin. However,
in true Brothers Grimm fashion, Anne was reluctant to enter into the incestious relationship of her
dreams even at the wishes of close family friend, Lady Russell. Through her narrative techniques of
selection of time frame, character selection, and an omniscient point of view, Austen illustrated the
nature of the proposed relationship and the desires of both Lady Russell and Anne. The time frame
Austen selected for her story emphasized the weight of the proposed union set in a time where titles
were worth more than life, the scenario of marrying a knighted man and being able to keep it within
the family bloodline was a win in all aspects. The knowledge of how great an impact the marriage
would have on Anne's family name brought a greater gravity to her doubts on the marriage and put
her in a position where, upon declining the proposal, could lead to her social ostracization. ... Show

Billy Elliot Analysis
The film Billy Elliot, by Stephen Daldry, gives a point of view of what this young boy goes through
when he is family does not accept his new–found love for ballet. One day at boxing practice, Billy
sees the ballet practice going on and decides to join in. Little did he know he would enjoy it as much
as he did. Although Billy enjoyed it so much, it was not easily accepted by his family and they made
that show clearly understood. Throughout the film this is the storyline that is really defining the
separation between sex and gender. I believe the author, Stephen Daldry, uses the separation
between sex and gender to show what the gender norms are and how they are looked down upon in
some places if not followed correctly.

Later on, in the movie, Billy finds out that one of his close friends, Michael, is gay. Although he is
not gay, he supports his friend. Michael is also a cross–dresser and enjoys wearing tutus. Later,
Michael becomes attracted to Billy but Billy responds with "Sorry I am not gay". Michael is so
young and already understands he is more into boys than girls, Billy becomes very interested in how
a boy so young can already know that. Thinking about the fact that Michael and Billy are the same
age and assuming that Michael is not forming to the basic boy actions of society it is very
impressive that these boys do not care about what others think about them. Such as the scene where
Billy shows up at Michael's house and Michael is wearing dress. Billy wasn't so sure about it at

Research Paper On Billy Elliot
Billy Elliot, written by Lee Hall and directed by Stephen Daldry, is a film about an eleven year old
boy named Billy Elliot (Jamie Bell) who is trying to find his own way as a ballet dancer in a small
town in northeast England where Boys are expected to do boxing. Billy's father (Gary Lewis) is a
coal miner. The movie takes place during a time of struggle and violence, all situated around a labor
strike. He lives in a tiny apartment with both his father and grandmother (Jean Heywood), and
shares a room with his older brother Tony (Jamie Draven). Towards the beginning the movie, Billy
is practicing boxing, when he notices Mrs. Wilkinson's (Julie Walters) ballet class, which is being

Like Billy's feet while jumping on the bed as a prelude to Billy discovering his talent as a dancer, we
see a close–up of Billy's shoes while he runs up the hill, and in the final scene we see Billy's bare
feet as he lands on the stage. When Billy and Debbie are walking down the street, the stick Debbie is
dragging against the wall becomes a pointer to direct the viewer's attention to the background.
There's a scene that begins with posters of human figures representing union strikers and flows into
the shields of the riot police. It is during this sequence that Debbie is explaining to Billy that ballet is
not just for "poofers" but for everybody. There are several key moments between Billy and Michael:

Comparing Men Of Stone And Billy Elliot
The novel 'Men of Stone' and the movie 'Billy Elliot' have several similarities between each other.
Both Billy and Ben have dysfunctional families. Both have a single parent household due to one of
the spouses dying. The two protagonists get closer to their parents by the end of the story. The
stories both take place over a long period of time. Conflicts and issues that Ben and Billy have are
all resolved by the end of the story. They both received criticism because of their passion for dance,
however they weren't criticized by the same people. Older women both make appearances in Men of
Stone and Billy Elliot. The older women are also related to the family. Ben and Billy both have
older siblings and they are the youngest out of all of them. Billy and Ben were both involved in
dance at a point in their stories. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Also both of them are crushing on girls. However these two stories are very different from each
other in certain aspects. Even though both families are dysfunctional, they are considered
dysfunctional because of different reasons. Ben's family is considered to be dysfunctional because of
his dad's death and the family's refusal to talk about it which created poor communication between
the entire family. Billy's family is dysfunctional because of the mining strike which causes the father
and older brother to lose their jobs. This then creates a tension with most of the family members.
Although both families display poor communication, they display it differently. Ben's family refuses
to talk about his dad's death and when someone brings it up, someone usually leaves the room and
the conversation ends. Billy's family communicates really angrily towards each other. The verbal
fights that the Elliot's have usually

Jane Elliott's Exercises
Blue or Brown Eyes
1. I believe that I would do fine in taking part in Jane Elliott's exercises. I have a unique view due to
my circumstances from being a non–religious asexual aspie (Asperger's). I have found that
everything someone does can be traced back to a reason. Yes there is something for me to gain by
taking her session however I am unsure what it is. I took socialization classes when I was younger at
UC DAVIS that at the time didn't think would really help me. They played a vital part in allowing
me to advance to the stage I am at but at the time I didn't think it was important. Even though I don't
know what I would get new experiences are a way to grow. The most important lessons to take away
from this I believe are awareness and personal experience bias. Awareness is something that until it
is put in to public knowledge the issue will never move on. For example the amount of funding that
breast cancer gets compared to most other medical issues is huge. The reason for that is the
awareness level of breast cancer in the public eye and how common it is for a high level of personal
experiences with it in some way. Personal ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
I think that to unlearn racism is something that only society as a whole can do. Only by society
striving to solve not only the issue of racism but all isms will we move forward. I think Jane Elliot's
lessons work in that it gives the people who partake firsthand experience. However I don't think it
will ever solve the real issue overall. Society has to take responsibility in solving this issue. The
most effective method I believe would be mandatory ostracizing similar to mandatory military
service. It would give everyone personal experience in dealing with being the out group. However
this would be rather harsh the best method would be something that deals with the issue of mindset
confirmation bias and logic. If we could teach everyone about how their minds affect them and that
everyone has their own issues would be the best

The Effects Of Hellish Interpersonal Characters In No Exit...
Hellish Interpersonal Situations by Peng Su
Situations of unpleasant interactions between people are common even in our societies. At least each
person has at one time has experienced a terrible or unpleasant interaction with another person. In
the play No Exit by Sartre and the poems The Waste Land by Eliot, there are similar unpleasant
interactions depicted. No Exit is a play consisting of three characters Inez, Garcin, and Estelle who
are in hell damned in one room. The characters had thought hell was a place for punishment but
rather found themselves in a room well furnished. However, all the characters refuse to admit to
their damnation reasons. The Waste Land on the other hand is a collection of poems that delve in
war, disillusionment, death, and trauma themes to show the effects of World War I. Therefore, the
focus of this essay is to discuss unpleasant interpersonal situations depicted in the two texts and that
are similar.
In both texts, the characters were frightened by the interactions with the other people. In The Waste
Land in 'The Burial of the Dead', Marie was frightened when her cousin insisted on taking her on a
sled out in the snow and sliding down the hills (Elliot 5). In No Exit Garcin who was the first person
to be brought in the room by the Valet and was frightened when the Valet left and came with Inez.
Garcin was frightened by the presence of Inez in the room as she thought he

Jim Elliot Chapter Summary
Book Review:
Jim Elliot: One Great Purpose by Janet & Geoff Benge
I chose this book because I have seen the movie: End of the Spear.
Jim was influenced by the different missionaries visiting his home, who then told him about their
life on faraway mission fields. He asked them questions and dreamed about being a missionary
himself some day.
Jim hoped to be a missionary, because it made him sad that so many people in other countries died
without knowing about God.
Jim actually became a missionary. He left the USA and boarded an 18 day long boat trip to Quito,
Ecuador to be a missionary there. Jim and his missionary partner Pete Fleming spent a year in Quito
learning Spanish. They then moved to Shandia a small Quichua village to take the place of the ...

When they arrived in Shandia, they started to learn the language the Quichuas spoke. After 3 Years,
many Quichuas became Christians. It was at this point that it was time to tell the Aucas about Jesus.
The Aucas were a neighbouring tribe that have had little contact with the outside world. The Aucas
had killed many Quichuas. Jim knew the only way to stop the Aucas from killing was to tell them
about Jesus. Jim and four other missionaries began to plan a way to show the Aucas that they were
friendly. Nate Saint, a missionary pilot, came up with a way to lower a bucket filled with gifts to
people on the ground while flying above them. He thought this would be a perfect way to win the
trust of the Aucas without putting anyone in danger. They began to drop gifts to the Aucas. They
also used a loudspeaker to say friendly Auca phrases. After many months, the Aucas even sent a gift
back up in the bucket to the plane. One day while flying above Auca territory, Nate Saint saw a
beach that looked long enough to land his plane on. He planned to land there and the other
missionaries would build a tree house to stay safe in until contact could be made with the Auca. The

Billy Elliot Into the World Essay
Billy Elliot Into the World
There are a variety of pathways and elements, which enables individual transition into a New World.
'Into the World' is about people choosing the next pathway into their life by their own determination,
experiences and support which enables them to go beyond their original location and narrow view of
the world. 'Billy Elliot' relates to the elective 'Into the World' as the film is about new possibilities
opening up, determination, family support and individual growth. Two related texts that show other
kinds of transitions into new worlds include an article on the Queensland School of Excellence titled
'Pas de deux' from the 'Australian Educator' on the 03/05/04 and a documentary by a Youth Program

The use of doors is a reoccuring symbol representing new worlds or barriers between worlds and
used throughout the film. Billy's initial glimpse of the ballet class through the door, and the way he
enters the class hesitantly symbolises a new world opening up to Billy. Billy's determination is one
the key elements involved in his eventual transition into a different world. Realising that his father
would not allow him to pursue ballet, he attends lessons in secret and practices extensively in his
bedroom, the bathroom and wherever else he can have some privacy. The door motif is again
prominent with Billy's father physically holding Billy back from pursing his pathway into a new
world. Many of the doors are shut and he must fight to break these barriers down. For Billy, dance
becomes a means of escape from his surroundings, a refuge, a form of self–expression and,
ultimately, a way out of his closed community and into the larger world. The limited use of colour
reminds us that the family world is collapsing just as new horizons are opening up for Billy. Billy is
determined to go against the rules and traditions of his family and forge his way into a new world.
Determination is also used through persuasive and emotional language in the article 'Pas de deux'.
The Queensland Dance School of Excellence is an education program offered in partnership with
Ballet. It provides the opportunities for talented dance students to continue their dance training in

The idea of male stereotype afflicted on belonging in society is further developed, interestingly, in

Billy Elliot Transition
Barriers are guaranteed when individuals venture into new transitions. However, these transitional
periods significantly impact one's understanding, often leading to unexpected outcomes that can
include otherwise hidden rewards. In Stephen Daldry's 2000 film Billy Elliot and Sylvia Plath's
semi–autobiographical poem Morning Song, both texts explore the transformative power of
obstacles, driven through determination, which encourage viewers that obstacles are only temporary.
Through encouragement during transitional periods, individuals may achieve inner growth while

Billy's determination is shown through the juxtaposing movements and camera angles of the
opening and last scene of the film. In the opening scene of the film we are shown Billy jumping and
dancing along with the non diegetic sound of Cosmic Dancer by T.Rex. The lyrics "I danced myself
right out of the womb," foreshadows Billy's destiny and desire to dance which is conflicted towards
the expectations of his father. Through the use of a close ups and slow motion it allows the audience
see Billy's lively facial expressions, highlighting his innocence. This is juxtaposed to his sharp and
precise movements shown in the final scene through close ups and worm eye view, signifying Billy's
dominance and power, which he initially lacked. Daldry's use of a extreme close up shot displays
Jackie overwhelmed and teary, represents how proud he is towards Billy's perseverance and shows
that he is embracing a more feminine side which he initially rejected. As Billy enters the stage and

Analysis Of Jane Austen's Persuasion
Perfection in Austen's Persuasion Jane Austen is know for writing sympathetic but realistically
flawed female characters. Elizabeth Bennet is witty but prideful, Emma Woodhouse is well meaning
but frightfully un–observant, and overcoming these flaws is what drives these characters' arcs
throughout their respective books. Yet in Austen's novel, Persuasion, at first, Anne Elliot seems as if
she is the perfect woman. She is a woman of "birth, beauty, and mind," (Austen 20), she manages to
be liked by nearly everyone she meets, and she was the only one to keep a calm head when Louisa
fell in Lyme (79). However ideal she may seem though, she is not flawless. Anne Elliot's greatest
fault is that she suffers from a lack of courage and nerve, and ... Show more content on

Yet besides a simple suggestion that it is the woman's job to look after the children, Anne doesn't tell
Mary that her behavior is egotistical, and actually uses Mary's outburst to avoid seeing Captain
Wentworth by suggesting that she herself will look after the child (41). Anne does not challenge
Mary's poor behavior even when it is blatantly selfish and even compromises with her in order to
further avoid a different type of confrontation. This is not the only time that one of Anne's family
members acts disagreeable in such an obvious fashion. Her father 's character is so shallow that he
only cares about looks and rank (4), rarely acts in a way that is not displeasing or ridiculous to the
reader, and has overspent all of his money and is now in debt (8). Austen even states that Sir. Walter
has "no affection for Anne," (175) his own daughter. He goes so far as to make fun of the
appearance of a man who served in the navy (15). We as the reader can see that Sir. Walter has no
redeemable qualities, and yet Anne does not stand up to him when he disproves of her engagement
with Wentworth when she is younger (20). Austen does say that, "it might have been possible to
withstand her [Anne's] father's ill will," (21) and it is ultimately Lady Russel that convinces Anne to
sever the relationship, but young Anne never tries to defend herself against Sir

Music Critique of film Score
Action, suspense, love, and drama are all the makings for a great film. None of these key features to
a film could have any substance or feeling without the help of music. Composers play a big role for
setting the tone of the movie, developing characters, moving along or supporting action, and
depicting the time and place the movie is taking place. In the movie Heat, Elliot Goldenthal does
just that. Goldenthal was born in NY in 1954 and studied music under John Corigliano and Aaron

directed. Goldenthal has composed for several films as well as concert halls, theater and dance. He

This distinguishes his character of the hero, from the other two villain characters. At the end of the
movie Robert De Niro's character is trying to escape the country with the girl while Al Pacino's
character is right on his tail. There is a moment when De Niro realizes he cannot make it out with
the girl and in and unspoken stare he leaves. The music matches the feeling of the moment using
long drown out chords creating that sense a wanting and loss. As Pacino chases De Niro through a
field the music stops to intensify the action and set up the final scene. The music fades back in
shortly before Pacino shoots De Niro. The music carries into a high key riff that is repeated with
strings playing four tones slowly behind the keys. The music grows louder adding more instruments
such as large cymbals and carries into the credits. Goldenthal's score was replaced in the final scene
with Moby's "God Moving Over the Face of the Water." Director Michael Mann felt that Moby's
music better represented a feeling of relief, that it was over, that Pacino finally got his guy. At the
same time the music related the two characters. Opposite from the beginning where the music
separated the two, here it connects them demonstrating how they were not that different and had
respect and admiration for each

Mrs Sen's By Lahiri
In the story "Mrs. Sen's", Lahiri presents the struggles of assimilating into a new country and
portrays how lonely and restricted immigrants can feel. She is able to do this through her use of the
character, Mrs. Sen, a woman who is originally from India. Throughout the story we see how
difficult it is for Mrs. Sen to assimilate to the lifestyle in America. Her days, usually consist of
staying in an apartment while her husband teaches at a nearby university. Mrs. Sen's Indian lifestyle
still seems very prominent, all her furniture is still wrapped in plastic, the shoes are all lined in a
bookcase by the front door, she refuses to purchase fish from the supermarket and she uses an
abnormal blade to do her cooking. All of this illustrating how perhaps she is not ready to let go of
her Indian lifestyle and assimilate. Mrs. Sen is representative of the struggles of assimilation, which
often include feeling lonely and restriceted. She always relies on Mr. Sen, she barely knows
anybody, she often misses her family and she cannot seem to make America feel like home.
Throughout the story we begin to notice how Mrs. Sen is a somewhat lonely person. This however,
is not by choice. She does not know too many people other than her husband, a man who calls her
when there is fresh fish from the seaside, Elliot, an eleven–year old she babysits, and Elliot's mother.

The director uses happy music when Billy dances in front of his dad to make it look like he is
fighting against the stereotyping. When Billy's brother has a go at the teacher when she says that
Billy missed a dance audition, this is stereotyping because the brother has a go at the teacher and
says that he would be embarrassed to have a brother that dances and that he doesn't want a gay for a

they like dancing and there isn't anything wrong with being gay just as long as u don't try and get

Conforming To Society's Expectations In Billy Elliot
Billy Elliot – Film Assessment
"Billy Elliot shows us that it is important to remain true to yourself and to not conform to society's
expectation."
Settings – How do they reinforce the main messages of the film?
Steven Daldry picks the settings in his movie carefully, in order to emphasize and reinforce the
importance of remaining true to yourself, and to remind us as an audience that it isn't always about
conforming to what society wants. Steven Daldry does this through the repeated metaphor of a cage
in his settings. The boxing hall represents tradition and society's expectations of Billy, "You're a
disgrace to them gloves and to the traditions of this boxing hall." Steven Daldry contrasts the worlds
that Jackie and Billy belong to, by placing them on the different sides of the wire doors of the

This is done further in the movie in Everington. The miner's huts in Everington represent conformity
and the grey dull colours of the miner show the bleak and uncertain future of Billy in this town.

street symbolise that all the children in Everington are expected to travel on the path to become
Miners. The walls are closing in on Billy and they represent the obstacle he will have to overcome.
Steven Daldry also provides stark contrasts in order to convey the message of the film, his use of
Juxter–positioning allows the audience to recognise the extent of Billy's passion of ballet and how
unusual it was for a boy to do ballet in Billy's community. The use of Juxter–positioning allows the

Anne Elliot : The Theme Of Masculinity And Feminidice
Anne Elliot is a kind and principled young woman. In her younger years she is somewhat passive
and easily persuaded by those around her. Anne grows up however, and in developing her character
she transforms into a confident and straight thinking young woman, no longer easily swayed by
persuasion of her friends and family nor political correctness of social relationships. She begins as a
passive character but grows into an active character as she learns who she is and becomes more sure
of herself and her decision making abilities, as is I believe common in growing up. The reader can
see a transition through the book wherein Anne is no longer so easily persuaded by those around her.
Anne finds herself, and follows her heart; due to being in proximity to Wentworth she realized the
strength of the love she still has for him, reveling in the realization (via his letter and subsequent
conversation) that the long held love is mutual. The theme of masculinity and femininity is in this
novel prevalent in the way Austen shows us traditional gender roles of the time. Austen does so
using female characters as the main characters and only uses men as they relate to women and in
domestic situations; in doing so she subtly shows her frustration with the limited freedom women of
the age had (Morrison, 337). Austen seems to note the injustice of the inequality, and the inherent
limitations on women, Mrs. Smith for example could not settle her husband's estate without help
from a man.

in 2017 at the Berkeley playhouse. The play is impactful because it satires gender stereotypes and
advocates for the payoff of hard work. My favorite character was the ballet teacher. The actress
made great use of the stage and her props. I loved the way she swayed in her fur lined silk robe and
how she used her faux cigarette. It really conveyed the life story of the character and made her stand
out. It gives her an aura of strength but also a certain feeling of tragedy – as if she had always
wanted to become a star. Her beat changes were very distinct throughout the play. Each line was ...

Her first challenge comes when Billy himself does not want to do ballet because of his preconceived
ideas that only girls and gay boys do it. The teacher pursues her objective by being stern and
demanding. This gets Billy to take dancing seriously and she furthers her goal. However, trouble
comes when Billy's father finds out that he is not doing his boxing lessons. The teacher tackles this
with her stern tactics from before but intermixes an appeal of sympathy for Billy's talent.
Unfortunately, she is unsuccessful and has to result to being secretive in order for Billy's father not
to find out. The conflict between the two characters was very intense due to conflicting objectives
and strong tactics; it raised the stakes and grabbed the attention of the audience. This makes the
viewer root for Billy to succeed despite his

Analysis Of Dream A Little Dream Of Me
First recorded in 1931 by Oswald George Nelson, known as Ozzie Nelson, with his orchestra,
"Dream a Little Dream of Me" came into existence. Two days later, after Ozzie Nelson had recorded
"Dream a Little Dream of Me", the song was again recorded on February 18, 1931 by orchestra
leader and musician Wayne King. Since those first two recordings of "Dream a Little Dream of Me"
there have been approximately 60 versions by many well–known artists of which included Mama
Cass Elliot in 1968 with the group The Mama's and The Papa's.
The Music:
"Dream a Little Dream of Me" is a classic song that has stood the test of time in popularity from
1931 to 2017. Over the course of eighty–six years, "Dream a Little Dream of Me" has been recorded
and released by many well–known artists including Ella Fitzgerald, Louis Armstrong, Doris Day
and Cass Elliot. Lyrics by Gus Kahn and the music was composed by Fabian Andre and Wilbur
Schwandt. All of the renditions of the song "Dream a Little Dream of Me" are different in their own
way with different styles and tempos. In this paper my focus will be on the recording by Cass Elliot
in 1968. Based upon the www.npr.org website, "Dream a Little Dream of Me" "sold nearly seven
million copies almost 40 years after the music was composed by two relatively unknown musicians,
Fabian Andre and Wilbur Schwandt."
The Composer(s):
The lyric writer, Gus Kahn, of "Dream a Little Dream of Me" was from Chicago, Illinois and started
song writing at the

Who Is Anne Elliot Intelligent
Anne Elliot doesn't fit into her family at all. Anne is very intelligent. She is very reserved and shy
and isn't as pretty as her sisters. Anne has she has a lot of thoughts and ideas to offer. Anne is
dependent and makes a lot of decisions on her own rather than being pushed by others. Anne doesn't
do certain things to please others but rather for self. Anne isn't much appreciated by her family or
heard by them. "Anne Elliot, with all her claims of birth, beauty, and mind, to throw herself away at
nineteen.....so young; known to so few, to be snatched off by a stranger without alliance or
fortune...." (Austen 22). Because of her engagement at a young age, her family have been very
distance with her about her choices. Her older sister Elizabeth

Anne Elliot Persuasion

  • 1. Anne Elliot Persuasion A classic work of English literature, Jane Austen's novel, Persuasion, centers on the story of protagonist, Anne Elliot. Intelligent, kind, and considerate, much of Anne's struggles throughout the text may be attributed to the ease with which she is persuaded by her family to act as they see fit. While this may paint the character as being easily manipulated or lacking strong character, it is argued that a deeper understanding of Anne Elliot as a character may be attained upon closer analysis of her surroundings, the context within which she was brought up, and her family dynamic. Born in 1787 (Austen, 1998, p.5), the character of Anne was likely subject to a different socialization process than a female child born in the twenty–first century. ... Furthermore, the theory implies that family members are often interconnected, seeking each other's attention and approval. Within the context of the novel, profession and marriage are two ways in which an individual may improve their social status. While Anne often seems to more easily overlook one's social standing in society (as seen with her willingness to maintain a relationship with Mrs. Smith) than the rest of her family, it is still clear that she is well aware of the class systems in place within her society, and the importance of social standing. This is evident upon her confession that she feels it was not wrong of her to be persuaded by Lady Russell to break off her relationship with Fredrick Wentworth (Austen, 1998, p.231). As such, when agreeing to marry Fredrick, it was not her love for him or her strengthened sense of character that allowed her to accept his proposal, but rather it was his higher position within society that made him deserving of her. With the above in mind, it can be seen that Anne clearly seeks the approval of her family members, and that her feelings and beliefs are very much influenced by ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 3. Billy Elliot Research Paper Transitions into new experiences and new phases of life can be problematic with many obstacles to be overcome by the individual. Changes result in a shift of attitudes, beliefs and values. Set during the 1984 miners strike, the film "Billy Elliot", directed by Stephen Daldry explores and challenges embedded traditional, community and family values and beliefs about gender roles, job choices and the way success is measured.Similarly, Gwen Harwood's poem "Barn Owl", highlights the effects of transitions in peoples lives through the rebellion of a child against her father, as well as the dissipation of innocence and the Individual growth of the child. The process of transitions can be challenging, problematic and confronting but will result in ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Personal growth can be measured emotionally, spiritually, intellectually, culturally or physically. Through the process of Billy's transitions he experiences emotional and physical growth. Stephen Daldry illustrates this exploration of transitions when Tony breaks out into a fight with Mrs Wilkinson around the kitchen table. Shot reverse shots are employed to emphasize the separation between Mrs Wilkinson, Billy's family and Billy. A close up of Tony and Jackie respectively reveals to us that Tony has become the dominant one in the family. This dominance is further reinforced as Tony asks Mrs Wilkinson, "Have you any idea what we're going through, I have been in a fucking cell all night and you coming round here talking shite... He's only eleven for fuck sake". This then cuts to a close up of Billy, who is behind a door, which symbolises the barrier between Billy and his family as he claims innocently and ironically, "I don't want a childhood, I want to be Ballet dancer", highlighting Billy's determination to still continue his journey to the Royal ballet school despite the obstacle of his family. This also highlights the personal emotional growth of Billy in his ability to confidently express his dreams and aspirations to his family who have constantly hindered his transition throughout the film. The parallel filming of Billy dancing aggressively to the sounds of a ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 5. Persuasion And Anne Elliot In the novel Persuasion, Anne Elliot was the second daughter of Sir Walter Elliot and was the heroine in this novel by Jane Austen. Anne had two sisters named Elizabeth and Mary. Elizabeth was the oldest daughter and was much like her father, being cold and selfish. Unfortunately, Elizabeth was her father's favorite daughter. Mary was the youngest daughter who was married to a young man named Charles Musgrove. Anne, being the middle child, was sweet and shy about her intelligence and was ignored by her father and sister Elizabeth. Anne's father, Sir Walter Elliot, was a very conceited and vain man because of his good looks and his title of minor nobility. He lived above his financial means most of the time and rented a big home so others in ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The Austen children grew up being encouraged to learn by extensive reading from their father's library and to be creative thinkers. Jane and her sister were sent to a boarding school so they would have a formal education. Jane started to write romantic fiction as a young teen. After Jane's father died, she and her sister had financial difficulties much like the Elliot's did in Persuasion. Jane Austen's life seems to be closely related to many of the situations and characters in the lives of the female characters she writes about in her novels. Jane was also persuaded by her father and a female mentor to not to love a man because they believed he could not provide for her financially and he was not of a high social status. This situation can be compared to Anne Elliot's character when she was persuaded by her father and mentor, Lady Russell, to give up her love of and engagement to Captain Fredrick Wentworth, a British naval officer. They found him to be an unsuitable choice because of his lack of money and connections in society. Jane Austen wrote about real life issues of manner, upbringing of children, morality, education, and marriage in a society of high social status and position. Jane Austen's family was well–respected members of their community, much like the Elliot family. Jane's status as a single woman did not upset her like other single women. The lack of a husband allowed her the freedom to concentrate on her novels, and gave her the opportunity to be a great observer of the actions of those around her, especially in the study of complex classes and gender relationships which were an important part of life in the early–nineteenth century English ... • 7. The Upper Class and Miss Anne Elliot Essay The Upper Class and Miss Anne Elliott Jane Austen, it appears, seems to be saddened by the decay of England's aristocratic social order. The study of her main character, Anne Elliot, and her innocent yet intelligent–like persona take her readers further into the core of her foundation of ethics, and the relation of these to the daunting traditions of her immediate family and surrounding social circle gives the reader a fresh look at the importance of class distinction and the clearly perceptible emptiness of the aristocratic society that, in actuality is believed to have existed in Austen's own life. A close assessment of the development of Austen's ideals through the course of her novels reveals the fundamental nature of the central ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The absence of familial love increases in Persuasion, as Anne Elliott, exists in her own perception apart from what she thinks are the less–appealing characteristics of her family. The distinction between this novel and her others is that for the first time in Austen's work, the inferior class is actually superior intellectually, morally and emotionally as compared to the high ranking society. This book also blatantly criticizes the prominent social class that had been, to some extent, upheld up to different degrees by at least one character in all of her previous novels. Anne Elliott acts as the only interpreter of this representation as she sees, with somewhat silent condescension, the absurd vanity her family is fascinated with. An ideal example of Anne's moral ethics opposing her father's vain ones occurs when she offers the idea of a high–ranking naval officer renting their manor while they relocate to Bath. Here Anne spoke – The Navy, I think, who have done so much for us, have at least an equal claim with any other set of men, for all the comforts and privileges which any home can give. Sailors work hard enough for their comforts, we all must allow. Yet, Sir Walter's biased and inflexible response to Anne's modest and tolerant one, which follows, demonstrates Austen's ... • 9. Stereotypes In Billy Elliot In the film "Billy Elliot" directed by Stephen Daldry, Michael is a thought provoking character because he is portrayed as both gay and a cross dresser. With the film being set during the 1984– 1985 coal miners strike. Michael lives in Everington, Durham, a small town in north–eastern England where you're either a "straight girl" or a "straight man" and the community is very "black and white" and there is no grey area in between area for people like Michael. In the film "Billy Elliot" Michael is seen to be interested in cross–dressing and frequently dresses up in his sister's dresses and puts on his mother's makeup (most notably her lipstick). The long shot of him standing at his door in front of Billy wearing his little sister's dress shows ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Along with the struggles of growing up in a community where he doesn't fit the expected "norm" for male behaviour, Michael has an alcoholic and abusive father who believes heavily in the gender stereotypes perpetuated throughout the film and disapproves heavily of Michael's behaviour. All this strain on Michael makes it hard for him to have a "normal childhood" as he struggles with the challenges of growing up in a community where you don't fit the "mold" of what a man should be like. This is shown in the scene when he and Billy are wearing tutus and dancing in the boxing hall and get caught by two angry parents who then proceed to call them both "poofs" and "sissies" for dancing together. Michael is also seen at the end of the film to have his male partner sitting next to him. This relates to the audience because at some point in their life everyone feels like they don't fit in with the majority of their community, whether it is a small difference or a large one people are all unique but sometimes can feel like they are the only one fighting against the world. In Michael's case he has to grow up hiding his true self and not being able to express his feelings as the community he lives in is heavily embedded in traditional gender roles and stereotypes and does not accept people who don't fit within the "black and white" ... For example, when everything seems to go wrong, the music is sad. When Billy and Michael are dancing in the boxing arena, the music is positive and cheerful. As Billy's father goes into them, the music stops and there is a tense atmosphere. In the end of the movie, when everything seems to evolve into Billy's favour, it's a love song that reflects Billy mood. I would say that the theme of the film is dreams and ambition. If you have dreams and ambition you can go far in life and make anything work. I also think that the theme is about talent. Everyone has a talent somewhere inside themselves– it´s just that you have to wait for it to be founded. We can find both of these themes in the story of Billy Elliot. By chance he discovers his hidden passion for dance, and he really wants to continue to dance, and at the same time be accepted by his family. Personally I think that the film Billy Elliot is a good, special and different film from others I have seen. I think that that the theme of the film was very good, and I think that Billy Elliot is a very good man. Sometimes it was hard to understand what the actors said, because they had a strong accent. The Characters of Sir Walter Elliot and Anne Elliot in Persuasion In Persuasion, by Jane Austen, there are many exceptional characters. Perhaps two of the most memorable are Sir Walter Elliot, and his daughter, Anne Elliot. These characters are well shaped and have something about them that transcends time and social class, enabling readers of the all ages, to feel they have something in common with them. Jane Austen has created a very silly, vain man with immense family pride in Sir Walter Elliot. Sir Walter is extremely proud of his good looks, his family connections and above all, his baronetcy. He holds both Admiral and Mrs. Wallis in the highest regard, however, as they are both very handsome. The reader is not impressed with Sir Walter's ideas. Sir Walter is also impressed by people's family connections. He is eager to meet Lady Dalrymple, not because she is family, but because she is a Viscountess. These opinions Sir Walter holds and his reasons for acquainting himself with others very much emphasizes that Sir Walter is very conscious of his baronetcy. His pride is also apparent, as he is condescending to people whom he sees as of lower social class. Austen further develops Sir Walter through the actions and dialogue of others. • 16. Billy Elliot Film Analysis Individuals venturing into new transitions could confront obstacles but may also gain significant rewards. Barriers often obstruct the achievement of goals which bring about growth and change within oneself and their surroundings. Billy Elliot is a film set in an English town of Evirngton, England during the 1985 mining strikes. The film depicts a young boy facing the challenge of overcoming traditional gender stereotypes to pursue his love for ballet. Billy faces extreme adversity from his family and community that hold traditional values and beliefs. The process of transitioning into a new phase of life may be confronting but ultimately lead to new understandings of self and others. Stephen Aldry's Billy Elliot film epitomizes this idea as Billy tries to pursue his passion for dancing in 1980's England. The obstacles he faces throughout his transition shape his journey throughout the text. Similarly, Clint Eastwood's novel 'American sniper' explores how transitions can shape an individual and their relationships with others around them, Where Kyle returns from his first deployment and reunites with Taya Kyle. Taya immediately notices that her husband has changed, war has made him moodier and angrier. Yet this transition is yet to be complete. Billy challenges society's expectations based on gender during this era, as he conflicts against male stereotypes on gender roles and follows his passion for dance. The film was set in the North of England, in a village called Everington. The director made sure that the movie did not go off course and stayed relevant to the time period of the 1980s. I found that the language presented in the film, was relevant to the time period and the labeling or stereotyping used was very appropriate to the 1980s period. This was because people were only coming to terms with the change and the diversity of men being gay or females being lesbian. In the 1980's gender diversity was not accepted as much as it is now. When he did ballet, Billy's class was full of female students which were seen as normal and boys were not expected to do any female activities. Billy did not mind joining the class and he actually enjoyed it. Billy was not very good at dancing but he eventually found a passion and a fire within him to want to do ballet. One of the problems that Billy faced was to actually learn how to dance. His body had never had to have been controlled and every movement in ballet was controlled and precise. Another obstacle was that he had to deal with the abuse and disgrace from Jackie and Tony who were worried that Billy would have been seen as a "poof". Jackie and Tony were disgusted when they heard Billy wanted to become a professional ballet dancer. This made Billy more determined to achieve his dream, not just to prove his family wrong, but other people who thought that boys shouldn't dance. Billy wanted it so much that he would practice in secret. As the focus of the author, he succeeds in depicting and registering the mood of personal weakness. Through reading the poem, there is an air of despair, weakness, and disappointment. It is imperative to acknowledge that the poem presents an order of events that are effective towards the depiction of human weakness. For example, weakness is shown when the men are trapped in the desert in a given bank of a river that is daunting to cross. The odd troubles of their current predicament describe to perpetuate human weakness. This paper will evaluate human weakness as propagated by the poem, "The Hollow Men." "Is it like this, in death's other kingdom, waking alone" is an important quote that depicts human weakness in the face of various fears (Bush 20). For example, weaknesses express itself through the curiosity of the characters as to whether or not heaven is as bad as their current environment. Specifically, the notion of loneliness is evident in the quote as an important aspect circumventing human weakness. Isolation is one of the feelings that follow. As such Sangi, Soomro, and Gopang emphasize that Elliot is successful in showing that human beings are devoid of the evident qualities of strength, determination and moral strength (473). • 22. Anne Elliot Persuasion Essay Our heroine of Jane Austen's Persuasion, Anne Elliot, is one of the greatest, and most appealing, woman presented in all of Jane Austen's novels. We are introduced to the novel where Anne Elliot, eight years after breaking her engagement to Captain Wentworth, has a developed unique character as Austen's female heroine: she is the daughter of a bankrupt baronet, a 27 –year–old spinster, an introvert, and an easy victim to persuasion. Such qualities would not make Anne a marriageable young lady, but they do not define Anne's whole well–being. Without even realizing it, Anne Elliot turns herself into becoming one of the most charming women in the novel through what she already possesses in her character. • 28. Cognitive Dissonance Theory Leon Festinger created the cognitive dissonance theory as an attempt to explain why people desire to have consistency between their behaviors and actions. Cognitive dissonance is the distressing mental state people feel when they find themselves doing things that don't fit with what they know, or having opinions that do not fit with other opinions they hold (Festinger, 1957; as cited in Griffin, 2009). Thus, people are motivated to change either their behavior or their belief when feelings of dissonance arise. Dissonance is reduced using three mental strategies. Selective exposure is the strategy used before a decision is made. The premise of this strategy is to avoid information that is likely to increase dissonance. The second ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The difference between condition one and three is that condition three allowed the participants to self–affirm after finding out their verdict was in disagreement with the other group members. Festinger argues that the lack of choice adds consonant cognitions which reduce the overall amount of dissonance that otherwise would be experienced (Festinger, 1957, 1958; as cited in Matz & Woods, 2005). Additionally, the opportunity to self–affirm strengthens self–worth and thereby reduces the dissonance created when people's actions threaten their personal integrity (Simon, Greenberg, & Brehm, 1995; as cited in Matz & Woods, 2005). Thus, Matz and Woods hypothesize that dissonance will be reduced by the lack of choice and the opportunity to self–affirm. The results show low levels of discomfort in the lack of choice and self–affirmation conditions, providing an explanation of the kinds of strategies people use to reduce dissonance. Study three introduces an interpersonal strategy introduced by Festinger: changing one's own attitude to align with others' opinions (Festinger, 1957; as cited in Matz & Woods, 2005). Building off of Festinger's idea of changing one's attitude three conditions are used in this study. The three strategies used are: (a) changing one's own attitudes to agree with others in the group, (b) influencing others to change their opinion, and (c) joining a different, attitudinally congenial group. • 32. How Does Jane Austen Use Anne Elliot Respond To Peer... In the excerpt from Jane Austen's novel Persuasion, Anne Elliot is faced with a decision normally seen as a dream come true by nineteenth century women of marrying her knighted cousin. However, in true Brothers Grimm fashion, Anne was reluctant to enter into the incestious relationship of her dreams even at the wishes of close family friend, Lady Russell. Through her narrative techniques of selection of time frame, character selection, and an omniscient point of view, Austen illustrated the nature of the proposed relationship and the desires of both Lady Russell and Anne. The time frame Austen selected for her story emphasized the weight of the proposed union set in a time where titles were worth more than life, the scenario of marrying a knighted man and being able to keep it within the family bloodline was a win in all aspects. The knowledge of how great an impact the marriage would have on Anne's family name brought a greater gravity to her doubts on the marriage and put her in a position where, upon declining the proposal, could lead to her social ostracization. ... Hellish Interpersonal Situations by Peng Su Situations of unpleasant interactions between people are common even in our societies. At least each person has at one time has experienced a terrible or unpleasant interaction with another person. In the play No Exit by Sartre and the poems The Waste Land by Eliot, there are similar unpleasant interactions depicted. No Exit is a play consisting of three characters Inez, Garcin, and Estelle who are in hell damned in one room. The characters had thought hell was a place for punishment but rather found themselves in a room well furnished. However, all the characters refuse to admit to their damnation reasons. The Waste Land on the other hand is a collection of poems that delve in war, disillusionment, death, and trauma themes to show the effects of World War I. Therefore, the focus of this essay is to discuss unpleasant interpersonal situations depicted in the two texts and that are similar. In both texts, the characters were frightened by the interactions with the other people. In The Waste Land in 'The Burial of the Dead', Marie was frightened when her cousin insisted on taking her on a sled out in the snow and sliding down the hills (Elliot 5). 'Into the World' is about people choosing the next pathway into their life by their own determination, experiences and support which enables them to go beyond their original location and narrow view of the world. 'Billy Elliot' relates to the elective 'Into the World' as the film is about new possibilities opening up, determination, family support and individual growth. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The use of doors is a reoccuring symbol representing new worlds or barriers between worlds and used throughout the film. Billy's initial glimpse of the ballet class through the door, and the way he enters the class hesitantly symbolises a new world opening up to Billy. Billy's determination is one the key elements involved in his eventual transition into a different world. Realising that his father would not allow him to pursue ballet, he attends lessons in secret and practices extensively in his bedroom, the bathroom and wherever else he can have some privacy. The door motif is again prominent with Billy's father physically holding Billy back from pursing his pathway into a new world. Many of the doors are shut and he must fight to break these barriers down. For Billy, dance becomes a means of escape from his surroundings, a refuge, a form of self–expression and, ultimately, a way out of his closed community and into the larger world. The limited use of colour reminds us that the family world is collapsing just as new horizons are opening up for Billy. Billy is determined to go against the rules and traditions of his family and forge his way into a new world. Determination is also used through persuasive and emotional language in the article 'Pas de deux'. The Queensland Dance School of Excellence is an education program offered in partnership with Ballet. It provides the opportunities for talented dance students to continue their dance training in the upper ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

However, these transitional periods significantly impact one's understanding, often leading to unexpected outcomes that can include otherwise hidden rewards. In Stephen Daldry's 2000 film Billy Elliot and Sylvia Plath's semi–autobiographical poem Morning Song, both texts explore the transformative power of obstacles, driven through determination, which encourage viewers that obstacles are only temporary. • 58. Analysis Of Jane Austen's Persuasion Perfection in Austen's Persuasion Jane Austen is know for writing sympathetic but realistically flawed female characters. Elizabeth Bennet is witty but prideful, Emma Woodhouse is well meaning but frightfully un–observant, and overcoming these flaws is what drives these characters' arcs throughout their respective books. Yet in Austen's novel, Persuasion, at first, Anne Elliot seems as if she is the perfect woman. She is a woman of "birth, beauty, and mind," (Austen 20), she manages to be liked by nearly everyone she meets, and she was the only one to keep a calm head when Louisa fell in Lyme (79). However ideal she may seem though, she is not flawless. Anne Elliot's greatest fault is that she suffers from a lack of courage and nerve, and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Yet besides a simple suggestion that it is the woman's job to look after the children, Anne doesn't tell Mary that her behavior is egotistical, and actually uses Mary's outburst to avoid seeing Captain Wentworth by suggesting that she herself will look after the child (41). Anne does not challenge Mary's poor behavior even when it is blatantly selfish and even compromises with her in order to further avoid a different type of confrontation. This is not the only time that one of Anne's family members acts disagreeable in such an obvious fashion. Her father 's character is so shallow that he only cares about looks and rank (4), rarely acts in a way that is not displeasing or ridiculous to the reader, and has overspent all of his money and is now in debt (8). Austen even states that Sir. Walter has "no affection for Anne," (175) his own daughter. He goes so far as to make fun of the appearance of a man who served in the navy (15). We as the reader can see that Sir. Walter has no redeemable qualities, and yet Anne does not stand up to him when he disproves of her engagement with Wentworth when she is younger (20). Austen does say that, "it might have been possible to withstand her [Anne's] father's ill will," (21) and it is ultimately Lady Russel that convinces Anne to sever the relationship, but young Anne never tries to defend herself against Sir ... None of these key features to a film could have any substance or feeling without the help of music. Composers play a big role for setting the tone of the movie, developing characters, moving along or supporting action, and depicting the time and place the movie is taking place. In the movie Heat, Elliot Goldenthal does just that. Goldenthal was born in NY in 1954 and studied music under John Corigliano and Aaron Copeland. At the end of the movie Robert De Niro's character is trying to escape the country with the girl while Al Pacino's character is right on his tail. There is a moment when De Niro realizes he cannot make it out with the girl and in and unspoken stare he leaves. The music matches the feeling of the moment using long drown out chords creating that sense a wanting and loss. As Pacino chases De Niro through a field the music stops to intensify the action and set up the final scene. The music fades back in shortly before Pacino shoots De Niro. The music carries into a high key riff that is repeated with strings playing four tones slowly behind the keys. The music grows louder adding more instruments such as large cymbals and carries into the credits. Goldenthal's score was replaced in the final scene with Moby's "God Moving Over the Face of the Water." Director Michael Mann felt that Moby's music better represented a feeling of relief, that it was over, that Pacino finally got his guy. At the same time the music related the two characters. • 62. Mrs Sen's By Lahiri In the story "Mrs. Sen's", Lahiri presents the struggles of assimilating into a new country and portrays how lonely and restricted immigrants can feel. She is able to do this through her use of the character, Mrs. Sen, a woman who is originally from India. Throughout the story we see how difficult it is for Mrs. Sen to assimilate to the lifestyle in America. Her days, usually consist of staying in an apartment while her husband teaches at a nearby university. Mrs. Sen's Indian lifestyle still seems very prominent, all her furniture is still wrapped in plastic, the shoes are all lined in a bookcase by the front door, she refuses to purchase fish from the supermarket and she uses an abnormal blade to do her cooking. All of this illustrating how perhaps she is not ready to let go of her Indian lifestyle and assimilate. Mrs. Sen is representative of the struggles of assimilation, which often include feeling lonely and restriceted. She always relies on Mr. Sen, she barely knows anybody, she often misses her family and she cannot seem to make America feel like home. Throughout the story we begin to notice how Mrs. Sen is a somewhat lonely person. This however, is not by choice. She does not know too many people other than her husband, a man who calls her when there is fresh fish from the seaside, Elliot, an eleven–year old she babysits, and Elliot's mother. The director uses happy music when Billy dances in front of his dad to make it look like he is fighting against the stereotyping. When Billy's brother has a go at the teacher when she says that Billy missed a dance audition, this is stereotyping because the brother has a go at the teacher and says that he would be embarrassed to have a brother that dances and that he doesn't want a gay for a brother. This is stereotyping against dancers and gays, because not all dancers are gay, just because they like dancing and there isn't anything wrong with being gay just as long as u don't try and get other people to join you. During this part of the film, the director uses sad rock type music to show anger from his brother. Conforming To Society's Expectations In Billy Elliot Billy Elliot – Film Assessment "Billy Elliot shows us that it is important to remain true to yourself and to not conform to society's expectation." Settings – How do they reinforce the main messages of the film? Steven Daldry picks the settings in his movie carefully, in order to emphasize and reinforce the importance of remaining true to yourself, and to remind us as an audience that it isn't always about conforming to what society wants. Steven Daldry does this through the repeated metaphor of a cage in his settings. The boxing hall represents tradition and society's expectations of Billy, "You're a disgrace to them gloves and to the traditions of this boxing hall." Steven Daldry contrasts the worlds that Jackie and Billy belong to, by placing them on the different sides of the wire doors of the boxing hall, emphasizing the differences of their worlds through the ... • 72. Anne Elliot : The Theme Of Masculinity And Feminidice Anne Elliot is a kind and principled young woman. In her younger years she is somewhat passive and easily persuaded by those around her. Anne grows up however, and in developing her character she transforms into a confident and straight thinking young woman, no longer easily swayed by persuasion of her friends and family nor political correctness of social relationships. She begins as a passive character but grows into an active character as she learns who she is and becomes more sure of herself and her decision making abilities, as is I believe common in growing up. The reader can see a transition through the book wherein Anne is no longer so easily persuaded by those around her. Anne finds herself, and follows her heart; due to being in proximity to Wentworth she realized the strength of the love she still has for him, reveling in the realization (via his letter and subsequent conversation) that the long held love is mutual. The theme of masculinity and femininity is in this novel prevalent in the way Austen shows us traditional gender roles of the time. Austen does so using female characters as the main characters and only uses men as they relate to women and in domestic situations; in doing so she subtly shows her frustration with the limited freedom women of the age had (Morrison, 337). Austen seems to note the injustice of the inequality, and the inherent limitations on women, Mrs. Smith for example could not settle her husband's estate without help from a man. ... It follows a young boy who becomes a great success at ballet after he starts attending dance classes instead of his boxing classes. The play uses parallel storylines of the struggle for coal mine workers' rights and Billy's struggle to become a great dancer. It takes place in an impoverished town in the UK during the 80's but it was performed in 2017 at the Berkeley playhouse. The play is impactful because it satires gender stereotypes and advocates for the payoff of hard work. My favorite character was the ballet teacher. The actress made great use of the stage and her props. I loved the way she swayed in her fur lined silk robe and how she used her faux cigarette. It really conveyed the life story of the character and made her stand out. It gives her an aura of strength but also a certain feeling of tragedy – as if she had always wanted to become a star.
