2. Traditional techniques
• There is many different traditional techniques that has been used back in a day.
On of the first techniques ever used was woodblock technique in the 18th
century. After woodblock technique there were a lot of different techniques
invented, like a drawings on metal plates, screen-prints, letterpress and
lithography. Lithography can be used to print text or artwork onto paper or
other suitable material. The letterpress was used until mid 20th
century but later
was replaced by cheaper version. However the letterpress is still used till this day
but its expensive.
3. Lithography
• The lithography is a method of printing originally based on the immiscibility of oil
and water. The printing is from a stone or a metal plate with a smooth surface. It
was invented in 1796. Lithography uses chemical processes to create an image.
For instance, the positive part of an image is a water-repelling substance, while
the negative image would be water-retaining. Then, when the plate is
introduced to a compatible printing ink and water mixture, the ink will adhere to
the positive image and the water will clean the negative image. This allows a flat
print plate to be used, enabling much longer and more detailed print runs than
the older physical methods of printing.
4. Desktop Publishing
• Desktop publishing is the creation of documents using page layout skills on a personal
computer primarily for print. Desktop publishing software can generate layouts and
produce typographic quality text and images. Desktop publishing is also the main reference
for digital typography. Desktop publishing began in 1983 with a program developed by
James Davise at a community newspaper in Philadelphia. The differences between desktop
publishing and traditional techniques is that desktop publishing saves a lot of time. It
doesn’t require any machines or equipment's except of computer and its more easily
accessible that traditional techniques. The desktop publishing can also be access for free
these days. These days we don’t need to access digitally published products in different
places, we can access them all on internet, for example; e-books on kindle, e-magazines on
app, e-newspapers on internet. It saves a lot of time and saves a lot of money.
5. Digital printing
• Digital printing refers to methods of printing from a digital-based image directly
to a variety of media. It usually refers to professional printing where small-run
jobs from desktop publishing and other digital sources are printed using large-
format and/or high-volume laser or inkjet printers. Digital printing has a higher
cost per page than more traditional offset printing methods, but this price is
usually offset by avoiding the cost of all the technical steps required to make
printing plates. The difference between digital printing and traditional methods
such as lithography, flexography, gravure, or letterpress is that there is no need
to replace printing plates in digital printing, whereas in analog printing the plates
are replaced all the time.
