Woodblock printing originated in China before 220 AD and involves carving an image or text into a block backwards and dipping it in ink to print onto cloth or other materials. Letterpress printing uses a printing press to produce many copies of text or images at once using engraved metal or wood plates. Etching traditionally involves using acids to cut a design into metal which was developed in the 15th century. While traditional printing methods were labor intensive and time consuming, requiring carving or engraving plates, modern digital printing allows for faster, easier printing through computer software and printers.
