The document summarizes research on various UK radio stations, including their target audiences:
National radio Heart targets listeners aged 20-40 with pop music and advertiser between songs. Local station Forest FM focuses on news and plays older music, targeting older listeners. BBC Radio 2 plays a mix of classic and newer songs, but its target remains the older generation due to presenter tone and genre. BBC Radio 5's film review podcast attracts both young and old listeners through its relaxed tone and clear reviews.
1. MEDIA RADIO STATION RESEARCH LUCY
CLAYTON
NATIONAL RADIO- HEART
10 minutes of Heart Radio Station: The genre of music, which was played twice during the 10
minutes, was pop. (Ellie Goulding- Love Me Like You Do and Robbie Williams- Entertain You)
As I didn’t listen ‘on the hour’, it didn’t have any news/weather/traffic bulletins, however it had a
series of adverts, including Auto Glass Repair, Estate Agents and Gas and Heating services between
the songs. It also had the presenters,JK and Lucy, talking to a listener who had phoned in, where they
answered a question in relation to a music artist where they could win a cash prize.
I believe this radio stations’ target audience, from listening to 10 minutes, would be for listeners aged
20-40 years of age, as I feelas if it wouldn’t be highly aimed at teenagers, but not particularly for over
40 years of age either.
LOCAL RADIO- FOREST FM
During the 10 minutes of Forest FM, it was mostly filled with news, especially from the local
community, where they gave the listeners a news bulletin.
After the news, they played a disco themed song (unknown) and suggests that this would ‘take
listeners back’,suggesting that the target audience of this radio station would be for older listeners.
There weren’t any adverts played during the time, however from listening to the presenter’s tone of
voice and the music genre played, I would estimate that the type of adverts that would be played
would be for the local community, as this is the local radio station that would be specifically for
businesses that aren’t national.
NON COMMERCIAL NATIONAL- BBC RADIO 2
The target audience for BBC Radio 2 would be predominantly at the older generation, this is because
the music genre played was acoustic/ older throwback songs, including The Beatles, “Here Comes
The Sun.” However, during this time they also played a new hit from George Ezra, “Paradise”,which
his music is aimed at young generation, which is surprising to me because this isn’t the stereotypical
music genre that people think of when they listen to BBC Radio 2.
As this is a BBC Radio Station, there wasn’t any adverts played. However,if they had adverts I would
believe they would be national businesses, aimed at the older generation, opinion due to the music
genre and once again, age and tone of voice of the presenters.
KERMODE AND MAYO’S FILM REVIEW ON BBC RADIO 5 LIVE
Everything on the podcast has cleaner transitions, however I feelthe presenters feelas if it more
relaxed, as they’ll already know the time limits and won’t feelas if the live audience would be
listening and interested, as the audience that listens to this podcast will be interested already to click
on the podcast itself. Therefore, the different sections within the podcast sound less choreographed
and ‘put together’ than a live show may have, although it still has structure, it makes me feel more
relaxed listening to it as I feel this could be played at home on a Sunday Morning, rather than a busy
drive time radio station. It includes their Box Office Top 10 and letters from different listeners of the
show that people send in. I would have originally believed the target audience for this radio station
would be for the older generation; however one of the letters that was sent in from a listener was from
a young girl about the film My Little Pony, which made me realise that there must be something
within these podcasts that attract the younger generation too. This may be because of the calming
voices and the clear reviews and understanding of words, which would also appeal to the older
generation, perhaps after retirement, on a morning or evening.
