FILM IDEA 1
‘ENIGMA’
TOO MANY QUESTIONS, NOT ENOUGH ANSWERS
MEDIA PITCH LUCY CLAYTON
ENIGMA:
A puzzling or inexplicable occurrence or situation.
LENGTH OF FILM:
A short film with a running time between 5-10 minutes.
GENRE:
Psychological thriller
TAGLINE:
Too manyquestions,not enough answers.
I feel as if this tagline makes my film unique, as the plotofmy film will leave the audience will not only
multiple questions, butdifferentscenarios and situations that could have happened thatthey will want
to find out the answer to, leading them to watch the film again multiple times.
MEDIA PITCH LUCY CLAYTON
CHARACTER PROFILES:
Main Character:
George, ‘The Man’
My film will predominantly include an adult male, with dark/grey hair and a slightbeard. This is so the
main character is the mostrelatable and therefore the audience will think that this can happen to them
at a pointin their lives, receives personal identity.
The clothes this main character will wear is a fisherman’s outfit, therefore beige, waterprooftype clothes
with a hat and all of the equipmentneeded to fish. (Such as fishing rod, hook, camping chair etc). He is
represented this way because although he is a fisherman, these clothes are still everyday wear that he
is still relatable. The outfit he will wear will be extremely plain, notonly to notdistract the audience away
from the plotas I feel the audience will have to look and watch carefully to understand and therefore
didn’twant anything to distract them away by the character having a pattern on his clothes.
Throughout the film this character will be quite mysterious, the audience will notbe able to know his full
personality throughout as I feel as if it is all about the plotrather than getting to know the character,
therefore the reason I wanted to keep his clothes the same was to ensure that the audience had
something ofhis to relate to, rather than his personality. Although this is the case, Ifeel as if the
audience will either be able to feel sympathy for the character as something so disastrous has
happened, or feel quite scared as they’ll wonder what he will do in retaliation to the
situation/occurrence.
Policeman:
The policeman Iwill include in a couple ofscenes within the short film, he will be an adult male in police
uniform, for the scenes where the TV shows the interview at the scene ofthe crime. This is so the crime
looks even more realistic and believable, getting the audience to completely believe whatis happening/
has happened within the film.
Although this character will only be seen briefly throughoutthe film, I want him to be represented as
extremely professional as ifthis was a real life crime and he was speaking like he was in a normal
interview.
The Wife of George
This character will only be shown extremely briefly, and won’tnecessarily even be seen, justheard. For
example, in one ofthe key lastscenes, she will be satwith George, asking him a question whilst
watching the news. While the audience doesn’tknow/ getto know much about this character
throughout the film, this character plays a huge revealing the key dialogue which adds to the plot.

SYNOPSIS:
ACT 1:
The short film will start with shots of the scene, a quiet, isolated butcaptivating lake, with a lot of
mystery behind it. The water is slightly off coloured, the ground is dirty and the birds are chirping butin
a slightly terrifying and anxious way. The sky is slightly grey, clouds in sightwith no blue in the way.
The lake has an eerie feel aboutit, leading the audience into anticipation as the first dramatic clip ofthe
main character, George is lying ‘dead’ on the ground, cuts and bruising over his face. His fingers or
eyes may flicker or move, revealing perhaps something secretive to the audience, which then follows
up with a blank screen or a quick switch to the upcoming scenes.
ACT 2:
The next couple ofscenes is whathappens to George, the main character and what stands in his way.
It will include a news bulletin, in a home environment(lounge or kitchen) with the wife ofGeorge, where
the audience will then be shown the television that is displaying the scene ofthe crime with an
interview, from a Policeman, where forensics are searching for evidence ofperhaps a murder or
drowning that has been committed within the lake, making the crime feel a little more realistic and
exhilarating to view. This will include key dialogue ofwhat has happened from the Policeman, making
the audience understand a little more ofwhat has happened.
It will then lead onto the main scenes within the film, explaining what happened with dramatic and
nerve-wracking scenes ofthe fisherman, the build up ofthe pleasant quietafternoon, where the
fisherman sits comfortably into his camping chair, to sudden movements ofthe man wriggling or trying
to save himselfand the explosive water shots from the lake, blood and bruising appearing across the
face and neck as he plummets into the water, demonstrating what happened, still leaving mystery to
the audience by notrevealing what/who has done this to the man, leaving more and more questions as
the plotcontinues and as the main character fights for his life.
ACT 3:
Act 3 is in particular the most intriguing and thought provoking. This is because these are the scenes
that tie the whole plottogether, concludes the crisis and therefore makes the audience reflect,
deliberate and reason what has happened and why this has occurred.
The last scene for ‘Enigma’, shows the news bulletin on the television, butthis time with both George
and his wife. This is showing a contrast to the news bulletin before, where George is now included
within the scene, bringing back the eeriness when he is involved. Furthermore, this means the thrilling
atmosphere from the crime scene in the previous acts are boughtinto a home environmenttoo. T
The wife will turn to George and say “Isn’t that where you went?”, to which he turns his head and
shuffles a little, moves his fingers towards his neck, where the cut in the beginning scene ofhim lying
‘dead’ on the ground has now been exposed to the discussion thathe was either alive, a clone, or is the
whole film and George’s life in a loop? The audience’s imagination decides.
MEDIA PITCH LUCY CLAYTON
TARGET AUDIENCE
My target audience is for late teenagers/young adults – adults. In my opinion, Ifeel as if younger
children would find some scenes, such as the crime scene and some blood scenes or action scenes of
what happens to the main character too upsetting or too complicated to understand. Therefore, Ihave
decided the target audience for my film would be for older viewers as they would be able to follow the
psychological side ofmy thriller and as a result appreciate the plottwists etc more.
Late teenagers/young adults – adults will be extremely interested in this short film as they will be
reached by action scenes, leading into a plotthat will make them think and intrigue them into what
happens next.
I feel as if this short film will be predominantly more interesting to the male audience, as the main
character is more relatable and includes the activity of fishing is stereotypically targeted more towards
this gender.
On the NRS Scale, I would put my target audience into the social grade category ofC2-B which is a
skilled working class to middle class. This is because they’re either semi-professional or professional,
therefore I feel as if they would enjoy watching something that could gettheir minds working after a
long day at work/ as a side hobby or thoughtbetween work shifts.
The film fits into a target audience category on the 4cs Scale extremely well. The film fits into ‘The
Reformer’ or ‘The Explorer’ category. This is because ‘The Reformers’ are often seen as intellectual
and therefore will be able to appreciate the complicated psychological plot, and ‘The Explorers’ as they
have a need for discovery and challenge, therefore would love to find outwhat happens within the plot
and will analyse the film fully.
MEDIA PITCH LUCY CLAYTON
FORM AND STYLE:
The form and style ofmy film will be thoughtful and convincing throughout.
The camera angles I certainly want to include are some initial establishing shots ofthe location,
character to setthe scene and lets the audience to see the character, what he looks like and perhaps
an introduction to how he will act throughout the film.
I think drone shots ofthe location, such as the lake would be interesting to experimentwith too.
A close up shotofthe man’s facial expressions or face scars, cuts and bruising would intrigue the
audience even more and also gets to feel the man’s emotions up close and more intimate and
personal.
Birds eye view shots, especially near the beginning or atthe scene ofthe crime, where it shows the
lake and man, making him look extremely isolated and alone.
I also think some shots from the water would look really exciting too, as the realistic splashes makes
the whole film seem a little more genuine, accurate and therefore more thrilling for the audience to
watch.
It will be filmed on a Canon Camera, as it has high quality which is what I am looking for, and different
lenses to help with perspectives ofthe characters and lets the setting come alive.
The genre I want to try and recreate is a psychological thriller, this is so the film leaves the audience
even more interested than when it began, and leaves them with so many logical questions and
thoughts afterwards, making them want to watch the film again and again.
MEDIA PITCH LUCY CLAYTON
MARKETPLACE:
Within the film industry market, I see my film being shown predominantly in cinemas if it was longer and
turned into the same length as other cinema films, however ‘thriller nights’ at certain events and
festivals would be perfectfor this film to be shown in too. Other than this, YouTube would be a perfect
place for this to be displayed also. This is because Isee my targetaudience being more attracted to
these types ofplaces and therefore will be more likely to go and watch the film rather than somewhere
they may not necessarily venture to, such as a classical theatre that would show more
romance/silent/black and white movies.
There is scope for a sequel or even a series to be made outofthese shortfilms, as I feel like they
would be able to be adjusted to any other type ofcharacter and not just a fisherman. This also means
that each film can be targeted more atthe other genders, hobbies, likes and dislikes so everybody gets
a chance to enjoy these types offilms too.
MEDIA PITCH LUCY CLAYTON
SAMPLE PRE-PRODUCTION MATERIAL:
FREESOUND- Scary AmbientMusic (Kill Shock)
I have chosen this background music, as itis not extremely distracting from the film, but adds tension
and mystery to the audience. Ithas no lyrics as I feel as if this would make it too distracting for the
audience and also wouldn’tbe able to hear the dialogue over the top ofthis too.

It will include a news bulletin, in a home environment(lounge or kitchen) with the wife ofGeorge, where the audience will then be shown the television that is displaying the scene ofthe crime with an interview, from a Policeman, where forensics are searching for evidence ofperhaps a murder or drowning that has been committed within the lake, making the crime feel a little more realistic and exhilarating to view. This will include key dialogue ofwhat has happened from the Policeman, making the audience understand a little more ofwhat has happened. It will then lead onto the main scenes within the film, explaining what happened with dramatic and nerve-wracking scenes ofthe fisherman, the build up ofthe pleasant quietafternoon, where the fisherman sits comfortably into his camping chair, to sudden movements ofthe man wriggling or trying to save himselfand the explosive water shots from the lake, blood and bruising appearing across the face and neck as he plummets into the water, demonstrating what happened, still leaving mystery to the audience by notrevealing what/who has done this to the man, leaving more and more questions as the plotcontinues and as the main character fights for his life. ACT 3: Act 3 is in particular the most intriguing and thought provoking. This is because these are the scenes that tie the whole plottogether, concludes the crisis and therefore makes the audience reflect, deliberate and reason what has happened and why this has occurred. The last scene for ‘Enigma’, shows the news bulletin on the television, butthis time with both George and his wife. This is showing a contrast to the news bulletin before, where George is now included within the scene, bringing back the eeriness when he is involved. Furthermore, this means the thrilling atmosphere from the crime scene in the previous acts are boughtinto a home environmenttoo. T The wife will turn to George and say “Isn’t that where you went?”, to which he turns his head and shuffles a little, moves his fingers towards his neck, where the cut in the beginning scene ofhim lying ‘dead’ on the ground has now been exposed to the discussion thathe was either alive, a clone, or is the whole film and George’s life in a loop? The audience’s imagination decides.
  • 5. MEDIA PITCH LUCY CLAYTON TARGET AUDIENCE My target audience is for late teenagers/young adults – adults. In my opinion, Ifeel as if younger children would find some scenes, such as the crime scene and some blood scenes or action scenes of what happens to the main character too upsetting or too complicated to understand. Therefore, Ihave decided the target audience for my film would be for older viewers as they would be able to follow the psychological side ofmy thriller and as a result appreciate the plottwists etc more. Late teenagers/young adults – adults will be extremely interested in this short film as they will be reached by action scenes, leading into a plotthat will make them think and intrigue them into what happens next. I feel as if this short film will be predominantly more interesting to the male audience, as the main character is more relatable and includes the activity of fishing is stereotypically targeted more towards this gender. On the NRS Scale, I would put my target audience into the social grade category ofC2-B which is a skilled working class to middle class. This is because they’re either semi-professional or professional, therefore I feel as if they would enjoy watching something that could gettheir minds working after a long day at work/ as a side hobby or thoughtbetween work shifts. The film fits into a target audience category on the 4cs Scale extremely well. The film fits into ‘The Reformer’ or ‘The Explorer’ category. This is because ‘The Reformers’ are often seen as intellectual and therefore will be able to appreciate the complicated psychological plot, and ‘The Explorers’ as they have a need for discovery and challenge, therefore would love to find outwhat happens within the plot and will analyse the film fully.
  • 6. MEDIA PITCH LUCY CLAYTON FORM AND STYLE: The form and style ofmy film will be thoughtful and convincing throughout. The camera angles I certainly want to include are some initial establishing shots ofthe location, character to setthe scene and lets the audience to see the character, what he looks like and perhaps an introduction to how he will act throughout the film. I think drone shots ofthe location, such as the lake would be interesting to experimentwith too. A close up shotofthe man’s facial expressions or face scars, cuts and bruising would intrigue the audience even more and also gets to feel the man’s emotions up close and more intimate and personal. Birds eye view shots, especially near the beginning or atthe scene ofthe crime, where it shows the lake and man, making him look extremely isolated and alone. I also think some shots from the water would look really exciting too, as the realistic splashes makes the whole film seem a little more genuine, accurate and therefore more thrilling for the audience to watch. It will be filmed on a Canon Camera, as it has high quality which is what I am looking for, and different lenses to help with perspectives ofthe characters and lets the setting come alive. The genre I want to try and recreate is a psychological thriller, this is so the film leaves the audience even more interested than when it began, and leaves them with so many logical questions and thoughts afterwards, making them want to watch the film again and again.
  • 7. MEDIA PITCH LUCY CLAYTON MARKETPLACE: Within the film industry market, I see my film being shown predominantly in cinemas if it was longer and turned into the same length as other cinema films, however ‘thriller nights’ at certain events and festivals would be perfectfor this film to be shown in too. Other than this, YouTube would be a perfect place for this to be displayed also. This is because Isee my targetaudience being more attracted to these types ofplaces and therefore will be more likely to go and watch the film rather than somewhere they may not necessarily venture to, such as a classical theatre that would show more romance/silent/black and white movies. There is scope for a sequel or even a series to be made outofthese shortfilms, as I feel like they would be able to be adjusted to any other type ofcharacter and not just a fisherman. This also means that each film can be targeted more atthe other genders, hobbies, likes and dislikes so everybody gets a chance to enjoy these types offilms too.
  • 8. MEDIA PITCH LUCY CLAYTON SAMPLE PRE-PRODUCTION MATERIAL: FREESOUND- Scary AmbientMusic (Kill Shock) I have chosen this background music, as itis not extremely distracting from the film, but adds tension and mystery to the audience. Ithas no lyrics as I feel as if this would make it too distracting for the audience and also wouldn’tbe able to hear the dialogue over the top ofthis too.
