LSC TENNIS CHAMPIONSHIP
The Lone Star Conference Men’s and Women’s Tennis Championship will be held April 21-22 at the Arlington
Tennis Center in Arlington, Texas.
The women’s field includes six teams - MSU, Cameron, Tarleton State, Texas A&M-Kingsville, UT Permian
Basin, and Western New Mexico.
CU, WNMU, MSU and UTPB will compete in the men’s tournament.
Action starts Friday, April 21, with the women’s quarterfinals at 10 a.m. followed by the men’s semifinals at
2 p.m. and women’s semifinals at 6 p.m.
Both the men’s and women’s championship matches will be played Saturday, April 22 starting at 10 a.m.
The tournament format is nine-point matches with three, eight-game Pro Sets being used for doubles and
six best of three-sets being used for singles. Six courts will be assigned to each match. All singles matches will
start 10 minutes after the doubles are completed. The match will stop when one team reaches 5 points.
MSU WOMEN, CU MEN CLAIM LSC TITLES
The Midwestern State women and Cameron men claimed the Lone Star Conference titles to earn the top seeds
heading into this week’s tennis championship.
MSU was a perfect 5-0 in conference play to pick up its third LSC crown, while CU finished 3-0 to earn its third
league title.
TENNIS PLAYERS OF THE WEEK
MEN’S
Julen Gutierrez, Cameron University, FR, Barcelona, Spain
Gutierrez went 3-1 last week in two 5-4 wins over No. 26 Western New Mexico and UT Permian Basin to help
the Aggies clinch the regular season Lone Star Conference title. Against the Mustangs, Gutierrez won a big
match in the five singles spot, winning 6-2, 0-6, 6-4. Against UTPB, he had a dominating win in the four spot,
winning 6-1, 6-1 while also getting CU a point with an 8-2 win in doubles with partner Vinicius Santos. His one
loss on the week came in a tough 9-8 battle in the three doubles spot against WNMU. Gutierrez is 13-9 in
singles this season, while going 13-4 in doubles.
WOMEN’S
Daria Panferova, Midwestern State University, JR, Moscow, Russia, Gorkovskaya School
Panferova helped 15th-ranked Midwestern State to a pair of sweeps against LSC foes last weekend on the road
with wins at No. 1 singles and No. 2 doubles. Panferova teamed up with Eirini Kontaki to post an 8-0 win over
UT Permian Basin while earning a 7-5, 6-0 victory over Fernanda Orona at the top singles position. She followed
by recording an 8-1 win over Western New Mexico before being the first off court with a 6-3, 6-0 singles victory
over Tiffany Newell to close out the road trip. The Moscow, Russia native is ranked fifth in the South Central
Region in singles with a 14-8 record at No. 1 while compiling a 17-6 doubles mark.
OTHER TOP PERFORMERS
Blayze O’Keefe, Western New Mexico, had a week to remember as he went 2-0 in both doubles and singles
action in two crucial regional matches against Cameron and Midwestern State. With teammate Zachary
Grabovic they pulled out a tight 9-8 win against Cameron and then added an 8-3 win versus Midwestern State,
both at No. 3. In singles, he rolled to a 6-3, 6-1 win against the Aggies and then pulled out the clinching point
versus Midwestern State as he rallied from a 5-7 first set loss to take the next two sets 6-3, 6-1 to give WNMU
the 5-4 victory. To finish the week, WNMU faced No. 6 Hawaii Pacific as O’Keefe and Grabovic won their match
at No. 3, 9-8, while he fell in his singles match in three sets, 6-0, 3-6, 6-7.
Tori Simmons, Tarleton State University, continued her strong play as a true freshman for the TexAnns as the
Plano native boasted four key victories in Tarleton’s matches against Texas A&M-Kingsville and Dallas Baptist
last week. Simmons’ week began when the freshman, alongside her partner Alicia Barbaroux, with an 8-6 win
in doubles at Kingsville before going on to win 6-3, 6-3 in singles to deliver two of Tarleton’s six match victories
against the Javelinas to secure the No. 3 seed heading into this week’s LSC Championships. She followed up with
two of the TexAnns’ three victories over Dallas Baptist in a regional showdown Tuesday afternoon. Simmons
and Barbaroux finished first in doubles with an 8-5 win before Simmons pulled off Tarleton’s only completed
singles win of the afternoon with a 6-0, 6-2 victory. With her singles victories, Simmons improved to 11-5 in her
freshman season.
Zhenia Shviadok, Cameron University, was perfect in her final two matches of the regular season
as CU defeated Western New Mexico and UT Permian Basin to the two seed in the Lone Star Conference
Championships. Against WNMU, Shviadok won 6-3, 6-3 in the two singles match, and followed that up with a
6-3, 6-1 win against UTPB. In doubles, she and partner Mathilde Thibaudat got the Aggies wins in both matches,
winning 9-8 against the Mustangs and 7-6 over the Falcons. On the season, Shviadok has gone 21-1 in singles,
winning 16 straight matches. In doubles, she and Thibaudat have won seven straight and are 17-5 this season.
Nadia Justiniano, Western New Mexico, collected two points against Cameron as she teamed with Emma
Siboni at No. 3 as the duo posted an 8-6 victory. In singles at No. 6 she added a solid 6-2, 6-2 win.

The Aggie men and women’s tennis programs both ended their regular seasons with wins, as the CU women
won 7-2 over Western New Mexico and 6-3 over UT Permian Basin, while the men clinched the regular season
Lone Star Conference title with a pair of 5-4 wins over WNMU and UTPB.
Midwestern State
Midwestern State women’s tennis closed out the regular season winning 13 of its last 14 matches for a 19-4
record. The 15th-ranked Mustangs clinched the No. 1 seed in the LSC Tournament with a perfect 5-0 mark
including three sweeps over conference foes this season. The Mustangs await the winner of the quarterfinal
match between No. 4 seed Texas A&M-Kingsville and No. 5 UT Permian Basin for their 6 p.m. semifinal contest
Friday at the Arlington Tennis Center. MSU remained second in the South Central Region rankings this week,
looking to earn hosting duties for the first round of the NCAA Tournament, May 1-2.
The men’s team earned the No. 3 seed in the LSC Tournament after suffering conference losses to No. 25
Cameron and No. 26 Western New Mexico on the road last week to end the regular season at 13-9. As a result,
the No. 21 Mustangs fell from the top spot in the regional rankings to fourth in the final poll before the NCAA
Selection Show. MSU opens up LSC Tournament play Friday at 2 p.m. with a semifinal match against Western
New Mexico at the Arlington Tennis Center.

LSC Tennis Weekly Release (04/20/17)

  • 1. LSC TENNIS CHAMPIONSHIP The Lone Star Conference Men’s and Women’s Tennis Championship will be held April 21-22 at the Arlington Tennis Center in Arlington, Texas. The women’s field includes six teams - MSU, Cameron, Tarleton State, Texas A&M-Kingsville, UT Permian Basin, and Western New Mexico. CU, WNMU, MSU and UTPB will compete in the men’s tournament. Action starts Friday, April 21, with the women’s quarterfinals at 10 a.m. followed by the men’s semifinals at 2 p.m. and women’s semifinals at 6 p.m. Both the men’s and women’s championship matches will be played Saturday, April 22 starting at 10 a.m. The tournament format is nine-point matches with three, eight-game Pro Sets being used for doubles and six best of three-sets being used for singles. Six courts will be assigned to each match. All singles matches will start 10 minutes after the doubles are completed. The match will stop when one team reaches 5 points. MSU WOMEN, CU MEN CLAIM LSC TITLES The Midwestern State women and Cameron men claimed the Lone Star Conference titles to earn the top seeds heading into this week’s tennis championship. MSU was a perfect 5-0 in conference play to pick up its third LSC crown, while CU finished 3-0 to earn its third league title. TENNIS PLAYERS OF THE WEEK MEN’S Julen Gutierrez, Cameron University, FR, Barcelona, Spain Gutierrez went 3-1 last week in two 5-4 wins over No. 26 Western New Mexico and UT Permian Basin to help the Aggies clinch the regular season Lone Star Conference title. Against the Mustangs, Gutierrez won a big match in the five singles spot, winning 6-2, 0-6, 6-4. Against UTPB, he had a dominating win in the four spot, winning 6-1, 6-1 while also getting CU a point with an 8-2 win in doubles with partner Vinicius Santos. His one loss on the week came in a tough 9-8 battle in the three doubles spot against WNMU. Gutierrez is 13-9 in singles this season, while going 13-4 in doubles. WOMEN’S Daria Panferova, Midwestern State University, JR, Moscow, Russia, Gorkovskaya School Panferova helped 15th-ranked Midwestern State to a pair of sweeps against LSC foes last weekend on the road with wins at No. 1 singles and No. 2 doubles. Panferova teamed up with Eirini Kontaki to post an 8-0 win over UT Permian Basin while earning a 7-5, 6-0 victory over Fernanda Orona at the top singles position. She followed by recording an 8-1 win over Western New Mexico before being the first off court with a 6-3, 6-0 singles victory over Tiffany Newell to close out the road trip. The Moscow, Russia native is ranked fifth in the South Central Region in singles with a 14-8 record at No. 1 while compiling a 17-6 doubles mark. OTHER TOP PERFORMERS Blayze O’Keefe, Western New Mexico, had a week to remember as he went 2-0 in both doubles and singles action in two crucial regional matches against Cameron and Midwestern State. With teammate Zachary Grabovic they pulled out a tight 9-8 win against Cameron and then added an 8-3 win versus Midwestern State, both at No. 3. In singles, he rolled to a 6-3, 6-1 win against the Aggies and then pulled out the clinching point versus Midwestern State as he rallied from a 5-7 first set loss to take the next two sets 6-3, 6-1 to give WNMU the 5-4 victory. To finish the week, WNMU faced No. 6 Hawaii Pacific as O’Keefe and Grabovic won their match at No. 3, 9-8, while he fell in his singles match in three sets, 6-0, 3-6, 6-7. Tori Simmons, Tarleton State University, continued her strong play as a true freshman for the TexAnns as the Plano native boasted four key victories in Tarleton’s matches against Texas A&M-Kingsville and Dallas Baptist last week. Simmons’ week began when the freshman, alongside her partner Alicia Barbaroux, with an 8-6 win in doubles at Kingsville before going on to win 6-3, 6-3 in singles to deliver two of Tarleton’s six match victories against the Javelinas to secure the No. 3 seed heading into this week’s LSC Championships. She followed up with two of the TexAnns’ three victories over Dallas Baptist in a regional showdown Tuesday afternoon. Simmons and Barbaroux finished first in doubles with an 8-5 win before Simmons pulled off Tarleton’s only completed singles win of the afternoon with a 6-0, 6-2 victory. With her singles victories, Simmons improved to 11-5 in her freshman season. Zhenia Shviadok, Cameron University, was perfect in her final two matches of the regular season as CU defeated Western New Mexico and UT Permian Basin to the two seed in the Lone Star Conference Championships. Against WNMU, Shviadok won 6-3, 6-3 in the two singles match, and followed that up with a 6-3, 6-1 win against UTPB. In doubles, she and partner Mathilde Thibaudat got the Aggies wins in both matches, winning 9-8 against the Mustangs and 7-6 over the Falcons. On the season, Shviadok has gone 21-1 in singles, winning 16 straight matches. In doubles, she and Thibaudat have won seven straight and are 17-5 this season. Nadia Justiniano, Western New Mexico, collected two points against Cameron as she teamed with Emma Siboni at No. 3 as the duo posted an 8-6 victory. Midwestern State Midwestern State women’s tennis closed out the regular season winning 13 of its last 14 matches for a 19-4 record. The 15th-ranked Mustangs clinched the No. 1 seed in the LSC Tournament with a perfect 5-0 mark including three sweeps over conference foes this season. The Mustangs await the winner of the quarterfinal match between No. 4 seed Texas A&M-Kingsville and No. 5 UT Permian Basin for their 6 p.m. semifinal contest Friday at the Arlington Tennis Center. MSU remained second in the South Central Region rankings this week, looking to earn hosting duties for the first round of the NCAA Tournament, May 1-2. The men’s team earned the No. 3 seed in the LSC Tournament after suffering conference losses to No. 25 Cameron and No. 26 Western New Mexico on the road last week to end the regular season at 13-9. As a result, the No. 21 Mustangs fell from the top spot in the regional rankings to fourth in the final poll before the NCAA Selection Show. MSU opens up LSC Tournament play Friday at 2 p.m. with a semifinal match against Western New Mexico at the Arlington Tennis Center.
