1. TENNIS PLAYERS OF THE WEEK
MEN’S
Angel Palacios, Midwestern State University, FR, Piedras Negras, Mexico, Everman (TX) HS
Palacios posted a perfect 4-0 singles record including three wins over regionally-ranked opponents to lead No.
15 Midwestern State to a 2-2 record on the week. The Piedras Negras, Mexico native helped the Mustangs
avenge a 2016 NCAA quarterfinal loss to No. 20 Ferris State Tuesday with a 6-1, 2-6, 6-2 win over the Midwest
Region’s 11th-ranked Vasil Surduk at No. 2 singles for his sixth-straight win. Palacios also took down two ranked
players out of the Central Region in Southwest Baptist’s No. 6 Chris Blodig and Northwest Missouri’s No. 11
Mauro Tete. He also came away with a 6-2, 6-1 win over Doane’s Kris Kiland in his first career appearance at
No. 1 singles. In doubles, Palacios earned wins with Denney Norrie and Dillon Pineda at No. 3 to finish the week
at 6-2. On the season, Palacios sports a team-best 6-1 record with a 4-0 mark against regionally-ranked foes.
WOMEN’S
Bianca Duff, Midwestern State University, FR, Geelong, Australia, Oberon HS
Duff continued her strong freshman campaign with a 6-0 weekly record to guide No. 21 Midwestern State to
three wins including a 5-4 upset of No. 11 Southwest Baptist. The Geelong, Australia native earned her first
career win at No. 2 singles over the 20th-ranked player out of the Central Region in Southwest Baptist’s Lani
Tuemmers, 6-4, 6-1. The 19th-ranked Duff also earned wins on court three against Northwest Missouri State’s
Aniek Kolen (7-5, 6-0) and No. 43 Tarleton State’s Elena Preadca (6-0, 6-0). In doubles, Duff and partner Maddy
Coffman improved to 6-0 on the season at No. 2 with an 8-0 win over SBU highlighting the duo’s week.
OTHER TOP PERFORMERS
Mateo Velasco, Cameron University, helped CU go 2-1 last weekend, winning all of his matches except his
doubles match against No. 20 Ferris State. In singles, Velasco won all three of his matches against in two sets,
winning 6-3, 6-2 against No. 48 Colorado State-Pueblo, 7-5, 6-1 against the third best JUCO team Seminole
State, and 6-4, 6-3 against No. 20 Ferris State. He also partnered with teammate Felipe Oyarzun for a pair of
doubles wins against CSU-Pueblo and Seminole State and then fell 9-8 (9-7) in the match against Ferris.

Cameron
While the Aggie women’s tennis team did not compete, the Cameron men came away with a 2-1 record after
taking down No. 48 Colorado State-Pueblo 9-0 and then the No. 3 ranked JUCO team Seminole State 6-3. Their
one loss came against No. 20 Ferris State, 6-3.
Midwestern State
Midwestern State men’s tennis moved to 4-3 on the season following a 2-2 week. The 15th-ranked Mustangs
suffered setbacks to No. 12 Northwest Missouri State (6-3) and No. 19 Southwest Baptist (7-2) on the road
before recording wins over Doane (9-0) and No. 20 Ferris State (7-2) at the MSU Tennis Center. In a rematch
of the 2016 NCAA Division II Quarterfinal, Midwestern State turned the tables on the 20th-ranked Bulldogs
Tuesday with a dominant 7-2 victory. The Mustangs swept doubles play and picked up wins on the top four
singles courts with junior Vasudev Vijayaraman recording the clincher for MSU at No. 3. Midwestern State
begins a four-match spring break road trip next week with matches against No. 5 Valdosta State, Abraham
Baldwin, No. 9 West Florida and No. 11 Georgia College on the road.
Midwestern State women’s tennis went undefeated on the week to improve to 5-1 overall. Highlighting
the week for the Mustangs was a 5-4 upset win over No. 11 Southwest Baptist (Mo.) on the road Saturday.
Midwestern State opened up Lone Star Conference action Tuesday at home with a 9-0 win against No. 43
Tarleton State. The 9-0 sweep over the TexAnns was just the second against Tarleton in program history, also
recording a 9-0 win on Feb. 8, 2003 in Wichita Falls. The Mustangs also posted an 8-1 result over Northwest
Missouri State in a neutral site match. Midwestern begins a four-match road swing over spring break next week
with matches against No. 14 Valdosta State, Abraham Baldwin, No. 7 West Florida and No. 19 Georgia College.
