1. TENNIS PLAYERS OF THE WEEK
MEN’S
Ramon Toyos, Midwestern State, SR, Torrelavega, Spain, IES Garcilaso de la Vega
Toyos climbed to eighth on the all-time wins list Wednesday with his 109th career dual victory following six
wins on the week with four of those coming against regionally-ranked opponents. Toyos led the Mustangs to a
3-1 record last week in competition against two top-15 teams in No. 9 West Florida and No. 11 Georgia College.
In singles, the 9th-ranked Toyos earned wins over regionally-ranked players in Georgia College’s Christian Graff
and Metro State’s Josh Graetz and a win over Abraham Baldwin’s Elvyn Nguyen at No. 1 singles. Toyos’ lone
defeat came to West Florida’s No. 37 Alex Peyrot. In doubles, Toyos also posted a 3-1 mark with regionally-
ranked wins over Georgia College’s 10th-ranked pair of Graff and Kyle Kinsler and Metro State’s No. 5 team of
Graetz and Joey Tscherne alongside teammate Dillon Pineda on court one. The duo fell to the nation’s No. 1 pair
of Peyrot and Pedro Dumont of West Florida, 8-5, for their only loss on the week.
WOMEN’S
Paula Gutierrez, Cameron, SR, Barcelona, Spain
Gutierrez was a key part of the Aggie women’s 2-0 record this past week as she went undefeated in both her
singles and doubles matches. In singles, the ITA 50th ranked player took down her opponent from Northwest
Missouri State 6-2, 6-3, and then beat the number one player from Tarleton State two days later 6-0, 6-3.
Paired with Samantha Wood, Gutierrez was also able to help CU in doubles, as the pairing beat their Bearcat
counterpart 8-5 and then their opponents from TSU 8-6.
OTHER TOP PERFORMERS
Tristan Da Lio, Western New Mexico, went 2-0 against San Diego Christian taking a 9-8 doubles victory at the
top flight and then a 7-6, 6-4 singles win at No. 4 to help the Mustangs to a 7-2 victory.
Luiza Ferraro-Adas, Tarleton State, won both of her matches against No. 24 Cameron Wednesday afternoon
in Stephenville, including a thrilling three-game comeback rally in No. 1 doubles to upset the No. 47-ranked
doubles pairing in the nation. Ferraro-Adas and her partner, Elena Preadca, found themselves trailing the entire
match and as late as 7-6, but the Tarleton tandem rallied to win three consecutive games and take the No.
1 doubles match 9-7. The match featured the region’s No. 2-ranked doubles pairing from Cameron and No.
4-ranked team from Tarleton. Ferraro-Adas went on to also deliver Tarleton’s surest win of the afternoon with
a 6-1, 6-1 win in the No. 5 singles match.
Maddy Coffman, Midwestern State, posted a 9-1 record in a tough slate for the Mustangs last week that
included matchups against two top-20 programs. The sophomore from Flower Mound was not fazed against
some of the nation’s top competition, responding with four-straight singles wins including three in straight sets.
Coffman recorded victories over Abraham Baldwin (Ga.), ranked ninth in NJCAA, No. 7 West Florida and No. 19
Georgia College on the road while remaining undefeated at home against Metro State (Colo.) to improve to 8-3
overall. In doubles, Coffman and partner Bianca Duff pushed their unbeaten streak to 11-0 at No. 2 doubles,
climbing to seventh in the South Central Region rankings last week.
Annely Heinze, Western New Mexico, tallied the point for the Lady Mustangs against San Diego Christian
as she collected a 2-6, 6-1, 10-3 win at No. 2. She came close in the doubles match with teammate Gemma
Goodland before falling short 5-8.
NOTES (Submitted by LSC SID’s)
Cameron
The Cameron women’s tennis team got a pair of close wins this week, as they beat Northwest Missouri State
6-3, with only five players, and then defeated Tarleton State 5-4 in their first conference match of the season.
Paula Gutierrez was 4-0 in singles and doubles combined, while Samantha Wood, Mathilde Thibaudat, and
Zhenia Shviadok were all 3-1 in their matches.
The CU men lost their only match against No. 18 NW Missouri State 8-1. Their only point came in the one
doubles match, as the 13th ranked pairing of Felipe Oyarzun and Mateo Velasco won 8-6.
Midwestern State
Both MSU teams posted a 2-1 record last week with their annual spring break trip with matches in Georgia
and Florida while earning wins over in-region rival Metro State (Colo.) at home Tuesday. The MSU men moved
to 7-5 on the season and appeared at No. 21 in the latest Oracle/ITA Men’s Division II national poll yesterday.
Following an 8-3 start to the season, the women climbed six spots to No. 15 in the nation for the fourth-highest
ranking in program history. The Mustangs travel to Oklahoma for a pair of matches Saturday against Oklahoma
Baptist and Newman at the OBU Tennis Courts in Shawnee.
