Alfred P Murrah Building Bombing
Alfred P Murrah Building Bombing
By: Ryan Agnos
In Oklahoma City on April 19, 1995, at 8:50 AM Timothy McVeigh parked a Ryder truck on the
street in front of the Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building. The truck had a very powerful bomb made
out of ammonium nitrate and fuel. McVeigh set a timed fuse and in turn of events it was bombs
away while he fled the scene in a getaway car.
At precisely 9:02 AM the bomb detonated ripping through the building's north wall. Killing 168
people and wounding more than 680 others, it also destroyed nearly 324 nearby buildings. 19
victims were young children that attended the day care on the second story of the building, some of
them as young as 6 months old. But incensed McVeigh was already 90 miles north.
When police interrogated McVeigh, they found out his motive for bombarding the building.
McVeigh felt upset because poor actions of the ATF during the siege didn't go as planned. McVeigh
stated in response "ATF, all you tyrannical people will swing in the wind one day for your
treasonous actions against the Constitution of the United States. Remember the Nuremberg War
Trials."
The reason McVeigh bombed the building was because he recognized that there was an ATF office
inside of the building and that would be his initial target. McVeigh was unaware that there was a
daycare program inside the building.
The Waco Siege was the attack of the Branch Davidians compound that belonged to the religious
group the "Branch Davidians" who followed David

'The First Day' by Edward P. Jones: An Analysis
"The First Day" by Edward P. Jones It's only natural to keep vivid memories of certain monumental
moments in life, such as the first day of school, for a long time. "The First Day" by Edward P. Jones
tells the story of a mother and daughter on the daughter's first day of school. In the beginning of the
story, the mother goes to great lengths to prepare her daughter for this important occasion. After the
preparation is over, she takes her daughter to a particular school before being told that she is in the
wrong school district. They are directed to the correct school and that is where the daughter is
registered to attend. However, the mother is not able to fill out the registration form because she
cannot read or write. Along with love, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
(Jones) Also, as her mother turns away and leaves her in the care of the teacher, the first thing she
states is that she can see where her mother has "darned one of her socks the night before." (Jones)
Instead of providing any commentary on her ascension to independency from her mother, the first
thing she notes is the condition of her mother's sock, showing her embarrassment toward her.
Although the daughter's shame in her mother is evident, she is also prideful of her as well. The
strong love that the mother and daughter share is pervasive throughout the story. The story is being
told by the daughter after she is all grown up. The fact that Jones uses such vivid detail on the
mother's preparation for her daughters first day of school shows that the daughter loved her mom
and all that she did for her. The daughter recalls that her mother spent a lot of time preparing her
when she says, "My mother has uncharacteristically spent nearly an hour on my hair that morning,
plaiting and replaiting so that now my scalp tingles." (Jones) She also remembers that her "pale
green slip and underwear are new, the underwear having come three to a plastic package with a little
girl on the front who appears to be dancing." (Jones) The daughter having remembered details like
these illustrate that she has an immense love and takes pride

P-80 Vs American Airplanes
The P–80 was a more effective fighter jet than the MiG–15 because of its small size and
maneuverability, its fast rate of fire and its versatility of weapons, and its superior range compared
to the MiG–15. In order to examine the airplanes effectiveness, we must first look at the background
of the P–80 and why it was used in the first place. In 1943 head engineer at Lockheed, Kelly
Johnson, gathered his team of mechanics and engineers. He explained that the U.S. Air Force had
ordered them to work on a new fighter plane prototype. The Air Force also made it very clear that
they were not allowed to tell anyone about the nature of the project and they must report directly to
Johnson. The prototype was requested in response to the new German fighter jet. With the looming
threat of the Germans superior plane, the Air Force gave Johnson and his team only one hundred and
fifty days to make and test a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The jet was built around a 4,000 pound thrust, General Electric I–40 turbo jet, which enabled it to
reach a blistering top speed of 558 miles per hour. This was a very big jump in aircraft speed from
past propeller planes. However, the Korean's Soviet–made MiG–15 was built with a single Klimov
VK–1A turbojet which produced 6,000 pounds of thrust that drove the MiG–15 to a top speed of
668 miles per hour. This difference in Max speeds of the jets was clear. The MiG–15 could easily
outrun a P–80. The difference in top speed really hurt the P–80 in combat because it could not keep
up with the MiG–15. However, the P–80's inferior speed was evened out by its extreme
maneuverability. The P–80 was shorter than the MiG–15 and it weighed 7,920 pounds, 195 pounds
lighter than the MiG. This combination of weight reduction and a smaller body, helped it to be
extremely maneuverable. Which means that even though it was slower than the MiG, it could easily

Death of Baby P Essay examples
Death of Baby P
Peter Connelly also known as Baby P was a British 17–months old boy who died in London in
August 2007 after suffering more than 50 injuries over the eight–months period, during which he
was repeatedly seen by Haringey Children's Services, NHS Health Professionals and the Police; all
who committed a catalogue of errors which led to the Death of Baby P at the hand of his mother and
her sadistic boyfriend (Mr H Baker).
According to the two Serious Case Review (SCR) released by the coalition and then Children
Health Secretary Ed ball, which found the youngster's 'horrifying' death 'could and should' have
been prevented by the public workers charged with protecting him.
Baby P's mother (Tracey Connelly) told her social ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
They also swallowed Connelly's account of Baker's limited involvement, which showed a lack of

The family G.P accepted Connelly's lies that Baby P's bruised easily when he examined the baby at
six months. In the final days of baby P's life a G.P said he was in a 'sorry state' but did not alert
others, decides she cannot carry out a full check–up as the boy is 'miserable and cranky'. A post–
mortem examination later reveals Peter had probably already suffered a broken back and fracture
ribs by this point.
According to the Mail on Sunday 15 March 2009, reported that details of the Serious Case Review
initiated by Haringey Council had come into its possession. It stated that there were instances of
mishandling by officials, missed and delayed meetings, miscommunication among officials, and a
failure to follow through with decisions related to he child's safety. It also noted among other issues
that officials had not followed through with obtaining an 'interim care order' that would have
removed Peter from his home when they had agreed that legal grounds had existed for doing so six
months before he died; key officials also failed to attend a 25 July 2007 meeting intended to decide
if it would be necessary to remove Peter from his mother's mom at that

Sammy In A & P
Sammy is a teenage boy and main character of John Updike's short story "A & P". The story takes
place in a A & P market outside of Boston. The young protagonist leads an uneventful life as a
cashier of the A & P. Sammy spends his days observing the shoppers (sheep) of A & P. Sammy is a
regular teenage boy, who falls under the spell of a girl he calls Queenie. She throws Sammy off so
much that he gives up his job for a chance to talk to her and to be her hero. Everyday, Sammy stands
at his cash register watching as the herd of sheep do their shopping. He observes their movement

She is obviously the leader of the other girls and more experience one. Sammy mentions that "she
was teaching them how to do it, walk slow and hold yourself straight." (33) She has what seems to
be an unshakable confidence. She walks with a swagger that throws off Sammy. His usual skill in
observing and analyzing people is disrupted by her. His description of the girls goes on for about a
quarter of the story. He is starstruck by the girls. Stokesie and him turn into pigs by the girl. They
say "'Oh Daddy.' Stokesie said beside me. 'I feel so faint.' 'Darling,' I said. 'Hold me tight." (34) They
both gawk at the girls as they mutter sexually inspired whispers at the checkout lanes.. In their
defense this story takes place in the middle of town five miles from the beach during the 1950s. The
attire that the girls are wearing is very unusual for that time period especially so far from the beach.
The time period this story takes place is very conservative. It is also a time of very strict conformity.
Sammy sees the conformity and he hates it. The whole time he narrates the story he compares the
shoppers to farm animals. He acknowledges his conformity when he quits and talks about the
uniform. He is aware that he is a part of the corporate structure and just one of the pawns. When he
quits he not only does it for the girls, but he does it for

Understanding of Identity in Samuel P. Huntington's Clash...
The word "identity" inspired many writers in our contemporary world, toarticulate their ideas and
state their suggestions in a way to find a precise definition for such a word, especially where the
globalization has become a fact which produces with it many effectual consequences. Some writers
had linked Identity with the original culture to which a person may belong, others dealt with it as a
changing factor transformed according to every ones status, however a third category characterized
the Identity from another angel in view of religious or ideological background. Huntington being
one of the leading writers in this sphere has imagined a future world witnesses a clash of
civilizations.According to his categorizationfrom a cultural perspective however; the world shall be
divided into eight civilizations. This essay shall shed a light into the different understandings of
theidentity and culture as in relation to Islam and the West having reference to different arguments
and visions presented in the following scholarly sources.
Samuel P. Huntington in his book " The Clash of Civilizations"has predicted that the source of
conflict in the new world shall not be ideological or primarily economic, as the great divisions
among humankind and dominating source of conflict shall be cultural.Although nation states will
remain to be the most powerful actors in world affairs, yet the principal conflict of global politics
will occur between nations and groups of different

Queenie in 'A & P'
Flat characters are minor characters in a work of fiction who do not undergo substantial change or
growth in the course of a story. A minor character in a story is not the leader of the story, they are a
supporting character to the protagonist and they give a contrast to the protagonist in a story. In the
story "A & P" by John Updike, the story begins by illustrating Sammy as a young cashier who is
cynical and loathsome of his current situation. He is infatuated by a pretty young girl, the minor
character, who is referred to as "Queenie." Queenie is very important in this story because of the
conflicts she causes. Queenie enters the story when she walks into the local A & P grocery store with
her friends wearing nothing but bathing suits. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

The Bombing Of The Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building
The event that I chose was the 1995 bombing of the Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building in downtown
Oklahoma City by an ex–Army soldier and security guard named Timothy McVeigh. He parked a
rented Ryder truck in front of the building loaded with a powerful bomb made out of a deadly
cocktail of agricultural fertilizer, diesel fuel, and other chemicals. The bomb went off at 9:02 a.m.
When the smoke cleared the area looked like a war zone. Half of the building had been reduced to
rubble, surrounding cars were incinerated and nearby buildings were damaged or destroyed. The
death toll was very devastating: 168 people, including 19 children were killed that day not to
mention several hundred more injured in the blast. The bombing was considered the worst act of
homegrown terrorism in the nation's history (fbi.gov).
On April 20, axle of the Ryder truck was found, investigators were able to find the vehicle
identification number that was traced to a body shop in Junction City, Kansas.Employees of the
show were able to help investigators with a description of the man who rented the van. After agents
showed the drawing around town, a local hotel employee supplied a name: Tim McVeigh.
On April 21 it was discovered that McVeigh was already in jail. He had been pulled over about 80
miles north of Oklahoma City by a Oklahoma State Trooper who noticed a missing license plate on
his car. It was 90 minutes after the bombing. Agents found traces of the chemicals that were used for

The Validity of Samuel P. Huntington’s Thesis in “The...
The aim of Samuel P. Huntington's "The Clash of Civilizations" was to provide an academic
framework to understand almost all of the conflicts that had broken out since the end of the
twentieth century, to include predicting the appearance of future conflicts. According to Huntington,
there will be a clash of civilizations since the world has been in an unreasonable era since the end of
the Cold War and the position of the nation–state has not been of any significance. Far more than the
political objectives of territorial take–overs, it is the religious element of culture that has become the
main cause of conflict. It should be acknowledged that Huntington's "Clash of Civilizations" is a
relatively simple theory which focuses on ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Yet, Huntington states with caution that the differences between his civilizations do not imply the
surfacing of conflicts between them. In contrary, Huntington also develops a completely opposite
argument. Without a doubt, Huntington declares that his civilizations are in conflict because they are
driven by irreconcilable moral and political values, the necessity to survive, and the will to
dominate. The characteristics of the new world order would be that much more disturbing because
the civilizations would act according to the "kin–country syndrome," mainly those civilizations
would partner with the less kin–civilizations. Eventually, a break out in conflict would arise along
the fault lines between civilizations. Huntington's explanation of conflicts all over the world seem to
make sense since a number of conflicts have arisen along his fault lines.
Huntington states that "Islam has bloody borders," hence he describes the appearance of a prominent
Islam threat for the western countries, in addition to the already present threats. His observation of
the borders of his Islam civilizations clearly mirror the practical sources of conflicts on the ground.
Moreover, Huntington argues that the Islamic civilization could use the help of the military,
especially with China and their anti–western reaction, therefore creating a "Confucian–Islamic
connection." Western

A & PAnalysis
The setting in A&P, which occurs in 1961, describes the antagonist as a traditional town with
inhabitants who conveys conservative thoughts. This is the post war period when the market is
prospering at the time. New ideas, such as dressing freely transpire s as the economy grows. A&P is
located in a small town northern Boston, far away from the big cities. Thus, people living there are
not ready for the changes in the way people dress openly and in mindsets. People's values in
Sammy's community are conformed. As Sammy has point out: "we're right in the middle of town,
and the women generally put on a shirt or shorts or something before they get out of the car into the

At the beginning of the story, Sammy notices three girls in a bathing suit walking into the store,
which really catches his eyes. Bathing suits are defined as improper dressing in public places except
for the beach in his town. In his perspective, he does not consider that it is an inappropriate dressing
in a local store. On the contrary, he thinks the girls are attracted to him, so he keeps on observing
them. However, that's not the only reason Sammy is interested in them. He thinks these girls are
different because what they were wearing undoubtedly go against the norm of the society in their
time. Sammy describes that: "the girls were walking against the usual traffic" (748). For Sammy, the
girls in bathing suits were actually using their own method to protest conservative rules. They
violate the dressing rule in the town which strikes Sammy's mindset. He realizes the bathing suits
symbolized personal freedom which is the value he aspires to have in his life. Therefore, when
Lengel condemns the girls for their indecent dressing. Sammy stands up to support the girls. When
Sammy quits, he removes his work uniform to symbolize he is no longer a conformer in A&P. "By
leaving with the white shirt his mother ironed the night before" (750). The white shirt represents the

Analysis Of ' A & P '
6– What is the theme of "A&P"? What literary devices are employed in the story?
Love, disillusion, religion... every story has its own theme and its author leads the readers all the
way to its understanding. The short story "A&P" is not an exception of this. Written by John Updike
and published in the New Yorker in 1961, it tells the story of Sammy, a 19 years old cashier in an
A&P grocery store who is amazed by the journey of three girls that enter the store dressed only in
bikinis. The story is narrated by Sammy himself; therefore, the readers can almost palpate the
narrator's innermost thoughts. Since the girls were improperly dressed, Lengel, the manager of the
store, rebuked them. Sammy decided to defend the girls and quit his job to catch their attention. But
this immature act will have a long–term consequence for this boy. The theme of A&P is led by the
significance of its setting, the use of symbolism, and the characteristics of its main character. The
setting of the story plays a special role in its progress. It is situated in an A&P that is five miles away
from the beach and "you know, it's one thing to have a girl in a bathing suit down on the beach . . .
and another thing in the cool of the A&P" (Pike 357–358). This kind of place is not the one to find
girls in bikinis every day. This makes the girls that are walking around the store the center of
attention. On the other hand, a characteristic of grocery stores is that they are always crowded. There

Literary Works Of H. P. Lovecraft
Murder, dark fantasy, cannibalism, aliens, monsters, and human–fish hybrids are all themes in the
literary works of Howard Phillips Lovecraft. The works of H.P Lovecraft, the strange, the weird, the
improbable, mirror his own life in many ways. On August 20, 1890, Howard Phillips Lovecraft was
born in Providence, Rhode Island. He was the only child of Winfield Scott Lovecraft and Sarah
Susan Philips. In 1893, when Lovecraft was only three, mental illness took his father from him
when he was on a business trip. Lovecraft was raised by his mother, his two aunts, and his
grandfather. "His neurotic mother convinced him he was ugly; it was possibly this belief but

His stories "engage readers with personal, first person narration and the gradual revelation of

suspiciously dies, and Francis finds his uncle's notes, photos, and newspaper clippings. Through
these findings he finds out about the Cult of Cthulhu, a secret society that worships the "dark god"
in macabre rites and is working to assist Cthulhu in its return. Another one of Howard's most famous
works is The Shadow Over Innsmouth. This story is about a man named Robert Olmstead. He
travels through New England and discovers a creepy costal town of Innsmouth. Odd people dwell
there. It seems the people referred to as the "Innsmouth look," which is best described as fish–like

A + P Feminism
Feminism in the 1960s There is an apparent biased view against women in the short story "A+P" by
John Updike. Society is male–dominated and women are discriminated against, whether they know
it or not. Such a restrictive culture and societal views are indicated by the inner thoughts of the
narrator, Sammy, who is the clerk at the supermarket. The interactions of three girls with the rest of
the townspeople are documented in Sammy's mind. Sammy's descriptions of people, the dialect of
the characters, and the actions that are noted converge to reveal the nature of the time and place of
the A+P supermarket. The majority of the story takes place in 19–year–old Sammy's mind. Here he
describes, in detail, three girls in bathing ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Furthermore, the girls only speak when spoken to. This all indicates that the men of the society in
"A+P" assume a superior role over the females. It is prudent not to miss the fact that the only time
dialect is directed at the girls is when it is coming from a male and is against them, i.e. against what
they are wearing and where they are, and there are no niceties towards the girls in this conversation
in any way, shape, or form. The only occurrence of anyone defending the girls is when they have
already been discriminated against and have exited the premises. The actions/interactions/reactions
of the characters in this small setting also point to a female– suppressed environment. The males
have the gall to stare openly at the girls as they go about their errands, while the women are shocked
and "their eyes snapped back" to their respective business. Some might argue that this is normal for
men to stare while the same sex–oriented people quickly avert their gazes. However, this is also
indicative of a patriarchy. The status of the characters also indicates that even the store, an
insignificantly small thing, follows the status quo of society. The males are the only ones with jobs,
while the females are commented to be "houseslaves." The naming of the characters is also blatantly
slanted against the females. Sammy gives the three girls names instead of taking the time to ask
them if they even have

The Predictability Of P / E Ratio
Introduction
This paper took a fairly broad range of academic papers and financial journals to investagate the
predictability of P/E ratio and how does it react differently under different conditions; Basu (1977)
was one of the main journal this paper heavily depend on which gave us generous knowledge and
answers to the predictability of P/E ratio. Basu(1977) concluded low P/E ratio portfolios implied
higher return than high P/E ratio portfolios and tested the market efficiency hypothesis.
Davis, Aliaga–Diaz and Thomas (2012) qualified the modest predictability of 1–year P/E ratio and
10–year P/E ratio among all other all other financial and economic parameters.
P., Shen. (2000) showed the relationship between the P/E ratio and the stock market performance. It
implied that the high P/E ratio would be the sign of poor stock market performance, and the P/E
ratio would fall back to the long–term average value, as the stocks' prices falled in the following
years.
Literature Review
Terminology of P/E ratio:
The price–earnings ratio (often shortened to the P/E ratio or the PER) is one of the most frequently
used indicator to valuing companies or stocks, which is defined as the ratio of a company 's stock
price to its earnings per share. For the P/E ratio of the stock, the euqation is giving below:
P/E Ratio = market value per share/earnings per share
The P/E ratio plays an important role in economists' research and practical investment. Since for

The Curtiss P-40 Warhawk Fighters Essay
The Curtiss P–40 Warhawk was a single–engine, single–seat, metal fighter plane and ground–attack
aircraft that was made by the Americans. The P–40 Warhawk fighters first flew in 1938 and caught
the attention of the United States Army Air Corps, who placed the largest fighter plane order it had
ever made for fighters for a count of 524 at a cost of US$13 million. This was the earliest serious
fighter in WWII and did its job until better fighters came out. It was known as a safe and secure
aircraft that was able to fly pilots back home after being shot up in action. Many variants of this
plane were later created. In addition, the shark teeth graphics were a big feature on this plane. The
first flight of the XP40 was in Buffalo, NY by a man ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
A P–40 would out–roll a Zero at high speeds, and a good P–40 pilot could use this to great effect if
the Zero pilot fell for it. Another thing was that for every good Zero model, the P–40 had a variant
that was faster. Therefore, the P–40 pilot could always break off an attack. The P–40, of course, had
an even greater advantage in diving speeds, with well over 400 miles per hour attainable with no
risk of damage to the planes strong airframe. Early Zero's couldn't hit 350 miles per hour without the
risk of damage to their plane. To get back on topic of the P–40's design, the P–40's rudder had red,
white, and blue stripes. The engine cowling had a large shark mouth and eye. There were actually
only 199 P–40s made. The rest were variants of it. The next step in the P–40 developmental stage
was the P–40A. The P–40A received a camera installation near the rear of the fuselage. The P–40B
received a better protected fuel system to keep it from possibly being blown up. The P–40C then
was given the ability to carry bombs and received self–sealing gas tanks. Less than 50 P–40 Ds were
made, and they basically got a complete overhaul. They had a completely redesigned canopy, better
cockpit, and all had two machine guns added, one in each wing and the distinctive chin air scoop
was made bigger so they could properly cool the large Allison engines .The P–40E and P–40 E–I

J. P. Morgan's Robber Baron
Like any other "Robber Baron" during the late 1800's, J.P. Morgan was no different. He controlled
finance and industrial consolidation and was well–known for being a banker. Credited for being one
of the few to shape the U.S., Morgan did have a lust of power and greed, but that doesn't stop him
from being America's leading businessman. His impact goes as far as the present with the many
companies he created. John Pierpont "J.P." Morgan was born to a New England family on April 17,
1837, in Hartford, Connecticut, being in a well–known family. "James Pierpoint was one of the
founders of Yale University, his grandfather founded the Aetna Insurance Company, and his father

But still, during the late 1800's, "much of the country's industries fell into powerful business
leaders," including Morgan. He was criticized by everyone for a couple of reasons: "he created
monopolies by making it difficult for any business to compete against his"––known as
Morganization; even though he was responsible for leading them out of the 1907 financial crisis, he
was also claimed by muckraking journalists that he "manipulated the nation's financial system for
his own gain," as thousands of workers die in his steel factories, and suffered higher casualties than
even the Civil war. This earned Morgan the "occasional distrust of the federal government as well."
But those reasons didn't stop him to be a man who ended up industrializing America with his vast,
growing, and substantial companies and financial expertise that just saved the railroads and subdued
the country's financial panics. If he also had not fought alongside with Thomas Edison with their DC
(Direct Current) against Tesla and Westinghouse's AC (Alternating Current), the way we use
electricity wouldn't be the same today.
In conclusion, J.P. Morgan is considered more of a "Captain of Industry" for today's modern age
than a robber baron. America would have been a whole different country without his contributions
towards society, especially if he didn't start the many companies and industries during his

Samuel P Huntington The Clash Of Civilizations
There came the competition of global dominance in the modern era, over four hundred years of
Western civilizations interacting, competing, and fighting. The Cold War which lasted over forty
years of the Twentieth Century changed the course of the world and in the end, ushered in a new
world order. In his article "The Clash of Civilizations", Samuel P. Huntington captured what the
world was like at the end of the Cold War. The question during the Cold War was "What side are
you on?" became now "Who are you?" Huntington illustrates that culture and cultural identities are
the primary causes of conflict in the post–Cold war. Nations were attempting to answer the question
they face: Who are we? To do so, they reference things that mean the ... Show more content on

The terrorist attacks on September 11, 2006 led many to believe that it was the start of clash of
civilizations, which Said argued as one not seeing the whole picture. The Egyptian revolution, of
thousands pouring onto Cairo's Tahrir Square demanding the self–determination they were denied,
shows that the clash of civilization was a myth. The world is filled with clashes and significant
conflicts, through the perspective of Huntington's thesis, one will understand the main cause will be
rooted in cultural differences. Through the perspective of Said's thesis, one will understand that any
conflicts in the beginning of the twenty–first century must be thoroughly understood rather than
viewing it through the lenses of an outdated concept. Since the Peace of Westphalia, the balance of
power amongst civilizations is shifting. Although nation states will still be a dominant player in
world politics but the main friction of global conflicts will take place among civilizations. The
international system began with the Treaty of Westphalia and the conflict between monarchies in the
effort to gain more armies, territory and money. Then the system began to shift towards nation states
with the French Revolution. Instead of conflicts between nations, the aftermath of the Russian
revolution led to the conflicts of ideologies, including communism versus fascism versus liberal
democracy. Seen in the Cold War, the battle of communism versus liberal democracy was between

Huey P Newton's Theory Of Intercommunalism
Founder of the BPP, Huey P. Newton, developed the theory of intercommunalism that created a new
understanding of American capitalism that had essentially reached the point where there no longer

linked by common causes that united them across national boundaries against a common enemy: the
U.S. empire." Newton further brought the fight against capitalism and its associated injuries into the
global context.

The role of black women was often relegated to menial tasks. However, the vital role that women
played in black radicalism cannot be denied. Had women been understood beyond threats to black
manhood, their roles as leaders could have taken black self–determination further. Their lack of
leadership played a part in the decline of organizations such as the BPP. Black female socialists
developed the triple oppression theory. Black women simultaneously faced gender, racial, and
sexual oppression. The very essence of their being embodied radicalism because their freedoms
would mean that all oppressed people would be granted freedom. Their efforts shined amongst the
Alabama Communist and the Black Power movement. As the SCU leaders increasingly faced
attempts upon their lives, the task of organizing the movement fell on Tommy Gray's teenage

My report on an issue/area of public concern related to the care profession – The death of Baby P.
The issue/area of concern raised in this report is as to how Peter's death happened in the first place.
Peter Conelly also known as 'Baby P' was born in London, on the 1st March 2006, he sadly died on
the 3rd August 2007 age 17 months. He died after receiving/suffering more than 50 injuries over a
period of 8 months. During this time he was repeatedly seen by Haringey's Children's Services and

In July, lawyers advice Haringey council social workers that they cannot legally take Peter into care.
Later on in July Ms Ward makes a pre arranged visit to the families' home and manages to miss
injuries as Peter was deliberately covered in chocolate to hide them. Police then hand over further
reports to the CPS, including statements from 2 doctors saying that Peter's bruising was suggestive
of "non accidental" injury, but prosecutors decide that there is not enough evidence to start a case.
On Aug 1st Peter is taken to a child development clinic where the paediatrician decides she cannot
carry out a complete check as Peter was miserable and cranky, and on the 2nd Aug police tell Peter's
mother she will not be prosecuted. Finally on 3rd Aug a 999 call is made at 11.36am. Four minutes
later the paramedics arrive to find Peter lying in a blood spattered cot. He was pronounced dead on
arrival at the hospital. An attempt was made to cover the crime, as Peter's clothes and bedding were
removed and dumped. Baby Peter was failed by police, social workers, doctors and lawyers.
Leading to his death. After his death there was a post mortem where Peter's injuries became
apparent, he had swallowed a tooth after being punched, he had a broken back, broken ribs, and
mutilated fingertips and had fingernails missing. It is believed he already had some of these injuries
when taken to see the paediatrician for his development check, which would explain why he was

The Call Of Cthulhu By H. P. Lovecraft Summary
CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT In H.P. Lovecraft's short story "The call of Cthulhu," written in
1926, Lovecraft does not give his main character a name. H.P. Lovecraft does not tell the readers
anything about the main character besides that his great uncle, George Gammell Angell, has died in
an accident. When George Gammell Angell dies the main character goes through George's things,
finding George's manuscript that starts the main characters investigation. The main character may
not be given a name or have much development behind his character, but the main character is the
narrator of the entire short story. However, there are some points of inner dialogue from the main
character so the readers can understand his emotions. H.P. Lovecraft, although he does not develop
the main character to a large extent, does develop the side characters to the point we know who they
are and what happened to them. George Gammell Angell, as stated above, is the main characters
great uncle, as well as, a professor at Brown University before his sudden accidental death. H.P.
Lovecraft goes as far as describing George Gammell Angell's death:
The Professor had been stricken whilst returning from the Newport boat; falling suddenly, as
witnesses said, after having been jostled by a nautical–looking negro who had come from one of the
queer dark courts on the deceased's home in Williams Street. Physicians were unable to find any

Culture War : The Myth Of A Polarized America, Morris P....
In her book, Culture War? The Myth of a Polarized America, Morris P. Fiorina talks of the lack of
polarization in today's politics. "The "culture war" refers to a displacement of the classic economic
conflicts that animated twentieth– century politics in the advanced democracies by newly emergent
moral and religious ones" (Fiorina, Abrams, Pope, 2005, p. 2). Fiorina argues that this phenomenon
does not exist; her argument under is persuasive for many reasons. I see the following as the main
reasons: the first, is that the media portrays more polarization that there is in reality and the second
being that Americans are more pragmatic that the advertised. Effects of the Media "Since media are
part of the political class and talk mostly to the political class, the myth of popular polarization took
root and grew." (Fiorina, Abrams, Pope, 2005, p. 167). Recently media has played a huge role in the
country's politic; they share information, report events, and frame opinions. Fiorina explains that
when interviewing, journalists have a tendency to observe those who hold political ground. These
individuals do have polarized views; however, those beliefs do not represent that of the majority.
Individuals who are more active in the political field are more likely to have polarized thoughts. She
also discusses the focus of political activist and explains that they "are not normal people" in regards

The West : Unique, Not Universal, By Samuel P. Huntington
In Samuel P. Huntington's article "The West: Unique, Not Universal," he addresses his audience
with a very controversial question: Is Western Culture universal or unique? Huntington elaborately
opens up this question with research and examples to explain and persuade readers that the West will
never be a universal culture for all, but rather a unique culture that will be accepted by those who
appreciate it. For decades now, historians and scholars have debated with one another to determine
who is right and wrong. However, from a handful of articles from different scholars, Samuel
Huntington's statement that the West is unique rather than universal is supported and even further
elaborated on by these particular sources. A common understanding between all the sources, that
must be noted, is that a civilization's culture is not comprised of material goods but rather their
culmination of their religion(s), values, language(s) and traditions. While although there are scholars
out their that negate the West is unique, a large amount of scholars still argue and strengthen
Huntington's argument that the West has unique and exclusive characteristics that make them
distinctive and rare.
Samuel P. Huntington was a brilliant student and political scientist who wrote numerous articles and
is most notably recognized for his novel "The Clash of Civilizations." He attended college at Yale

History itself is a diachronic science and constructing a true historical record coincidentally begins
its origins in the West. History starts in Mesopotamia and Egypt then somehow works its way into
Rome, then the text books, then the American psyche. It is this pattern, as opposed to the historical
record other countries keep, which Americans rely on. This goes side–by–side with the repetitive
role Euro–centrism plays in defining our origins and identity in society. Can an aggregation of
narratives that help bridge the gap between empirical evidence that supports our origin as a species
honestly rule over this post–World War Two triumphant state we live in? Can the world converge, or
are the shifting patterns of philosophy out ruling this possibility? Our environment and technology
serves as a back–drop to this triumphant society we familiarize with and here it is that one of my
"branches" from the political/social tree emerges: There is no diversity in our culture, only
dominance – of all societies; this is how we are "conditioned" to believe our origins are of the
"Western" hemisphere. Can Carbon 14 accurately yield ideas as to when Megalithic structures were

an accurate enough history of the world, and have tapped into the truth of our saga not in favor of
ourselves?

Present Themes In The First Day By Edward P. Jones
American actress and model, Kristen Stewart, once said, "Judging a person does not define who
they are. It defines who you are." –Kristen Stewart (A–Z Quotes). People judge others every single
day. Silent eyes beat down on people and negative thoughts seeping into hearts. Everyone does it,
but some just are clueless about the impact. This judgment is present in Edward P. Jones' "The First
Day," where a little girl comes to realize that people are judging her and her mother for being who
they are, and determining what they are like based on their status. In Jones' short story "The First
Day," the present theme is that a person's status determines how a person is viewed, liked, and how
economically stable they are. This focus is present through the imagery of the little girl and the
characterization of the mother.
One way Jones shows the theme that a person's status determines how a person is viewed, liked, and
how economically stable they are, is through the imagery of the little girl. It is an African–American
girl's first day of school, and the mother is getting her all dolled up to make a good impression. "I
am wearing a checkeredlike blue–and–green cotton dress, and scattered about these colors are bits
of yellow and white and brown. My mother has uncharacteristically spent nearly an hour on my hair
that morning, plaiting and replaiting so that now my scalp tingles" (Jones 1). The mother really
wants to make a good impression on the new school that her daughter is going to, and not look poor
or different. When saying that the mother has "uncharacteristically" done her hair, the mother is
going out of her way to do something special. The mother has spent an hour on this girl's hair for her
very first day of school, which is not like herself. Thus showing, that the mother really cares about
the first impression that the daughter makes at her new school and community, and how they are
viewed with their status. The mother is changing the image of her daughter to try and better her off.
Ultimately, through imagery, the highlighted theme is that people are judged based on their statuses.
The mother in the story also proves that people are judging. Through the use of characterization by

Analysis Of ' A & P '
Choice and Class are the two major themes in Updike's "A&P," displayed through the main
character, Sammy, and several background characters, including the three girls the story is based
around. These two ideals are explored through the point of view of the main character, the depth in
which the characters are described(both physically and in their own life) and how the characters are
framed in relation to one another. Part of what helped Updike frame the themes was the in depth
description of the characters. Every character, even secondary, or characters who seemingly had
nothing to do with the plot, were described in great detail. Not only were their physical aspects
detailed, but even how the characters moved in the story, or how they interacted with each other. For
example, Sammy's description of the three girls, when he says, "The sheep pushing their carts down
the aisle––the girls were walking against the usual traffic (not that we have one–way signs or
anything)"(Updike 463). That description of how the girls moved in the store is one of the first
inklings of individuality. They were moving against the grain of the people in the store, but also they
are moving against the grain of society and social norms. The way they showed their individuality is
also exemplifies through the description of the swimsuits they were wearing. It is one of the central
parts of the story because wearing only swimsuits in a store was and still is seen as improper. This

Alfred P Murrah Building Bombing

  • 1. Alfred P Murrah Building Bombing Alfred P Murrah Building Bombing By: Ryan Agnos In Oklahoma City on April 19, 1995, at 8:50 AM Timothy McVeigh parked a Ryder truck on the street in front of the Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building. The truck had a very powerful bomb made out of ammonium nitrate and fuel. McVeigh set a timed fuse and in turn of events it was bombs away while he fled the scene in a getaway car. At precisely 9:02 AM the bomb detonated ripping through the building's north wall. Killing 168 people and wounding more than 680 others, it also destroyed nearly 324 nearby buildings. 19 victims were young children that attended the day care on the second story of the building, some of them as young as 6 months old. But incensed McVeigh was already 90 miles north. When police interrogated McVeigh, they found out his motive for bombarding the building. McVeigh felt upset because poor actions of the ATF during the siege didn't go as planned. McVeigh stated in response "ATF, all you tyrannical people will swing in the wind one day for your treasonous actions against the Constitution of the United States. Remember the Nuremberg War Trials." The reason McVeigh bombed the building was because he recognized that there was an ATF office inside of the building and that would be his initial target. McVeigh was unaware that there was a daycare program inside the building. The Waco Siege was the attack of the Branch Davidians compound that belonged to the religious group the "Branch Davidians" who followed David ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 3. 'The First Day' by Edward P. Jones: An Analysis "The First Day" by Edward P. Jones It's only natural to keep vivid memories of certain monumental moments in life, such as the first day of school, for a long time. "The First Day" by Edward P. Jones tells the story of a mother and daughter on the daughter's first day of school. In the beginning of the story, the mother goes to great lengths to prepare her daughter for this important occasion. After the preparation is over, she takes her daughter to a particular school before being told that she is in the wrong school district. They are directed to the correct school and that is where the daughter is registered to attend. However, the mother is not able to fill out the registration form because she cannot read or write. Along with love, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... (Jones) Also, as her mother turns away and leaves her in the care of the teacher, the first thing she states is that she can see where her mother has "darned one of her socks the night before." (Jones) Instead of providing any commentary on her ascension to independency from her mother, the first thing she notes is the condition of her mother's sock, showing her embarrassment toward her. Although the daughter's shame in her mother is evident, she is also prideful of her as well. The strong love that the mother and daughter share is pervasive throughout the story. The story is being told by the daughter after she is all grown up. The fact that Jones uses such vivid detail on the mother's preparation for her daughters first day of school shows that the daughter loved her mom and all that she did for her. The daughter recalls that her mother spent a lot of time preparing her when she says, "My mother has uncharacteristically spent nearly an hour on my hair that morning, plaiting and replaiting so that now my scalp tingles." (Jones) She also remembers that her "pale green slip and underwear are new, the underwear having come three to a plastic package with a little girl on the front who appears to be dancing." (Jones) The daughter having remembered details like these illustrate that she has an immense love and takes pride ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 7. P-80 Vs American Airplanes The P–80 was a more effective fighter jet than the MiG–15 because of its small size and maneuverability, its fast rate of fire and its versatility of weapons, and its superior range compared to the MiG–15. In order to examine the airplanes effectiveness, we must first look at the background of the P–80 and why it was used in the first place. In 1943 head engineer at Lockheed, Kelly Johnson, gathered his team of mechanics and engineers. He explained that the U.S. Air Force had ordered them to work on a new fighter plane prototype. The Air Force also made it very clear that they were not allowed to tell anyone about the nature of the project and they must report directly to Johnson. The prototype was requested in response to the new German fighter jet. With the looming threat of the Germans superior plane, the Air Force gave Johnson and his team only one hundred and fifty days to make and test a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The jet was built around a 4,000 pound thrust, General Electric I–40 turbo jet, which enabled it to reach a blistering top speed of 558 miles per hour. This was a very big jump in aircraft speed from past propeller planes. However, the Korean's Soviet–made MiG–15 was built with a single Klimov VK–1A turbojet which produced 6,000 pounds of thrust that drove the MiG–15 to a top speed of 668 miles per hour. This difference in Max speeds of the jets was clear. The MiG–15 could easily outrun a P–80. The difference in top speed really hurt the P–80 in combat because it could not keep up with the MiG–15. However, the P–80's inferior speed was evened out by its extreme maneuverability. The P–80 was shorter than the MiG–15 and it weighed 7,920 pounds, 195 pounds lighter than the MiG. This combination of weight reduction and a smaller body, helped it to be extremely maneuverable. Which means that even though it was slower than the MiG, it could easily outmaneuver ... • 15. Understanding of Identity in Samuel P. Huntington's Clash... The word "identity" inspired many writers in our contemporary world, toarticulate their ideas and state their suggestions in a way to find a precise definition for such a word, especially where the globalization has become a fact which produces with it many effectual consequences. Some writers had linked Identity with the original culture to which a person may belong, others dealt with it as a changing factor transformed according to every ones status, however a third category characterized the Identity from another angel in view of religious or ideological background. Huntington being one of the leading writers in this sphere has imagined a future world witnesses a clash of civilizations.According to his categorizationfrom a cultural perspective however; the world shall be divided into eight civilizations. This essay shall shed a light into the different understandings of theidentity and culture as in relation to Islam and the West having reference to different arguments and visions presented in the following scholarly sources. Samuel P. Huntington in his book " The Clash of Civilizations"has predicted that the source of conflict in the new world shall not be ideological or primarily economic, as the great divisions among humankind and dominating source of conflict shall be cultural.Although nation states will remain to be the most powerful actors in world affairs, yet the principal conflict of global politics will occur between nations and groups of different ... He parked a rented Ryder truck in front of the building loaded with a powerful bomb made out of a deadly cocktail of agricultural fertilizer, diesel fuel, and other chemicals. The bomb went off at 9:02 a.m. When the smoke cleared the area looked like a war zone. Half of the building had been reduced to rubble, surrounding cars were incinerated and nearby buildings were damaged or destroyed. The death toll was very devastating: 168 people, including 19 children were killed that day not to mention several hundred more injured in the blast. The bombing was considered the worst act of homegrown terrorism in the nation's history (fbi.gov). Huntington's "The Clash of Civilizations" was to provide an academic framework to understand almost all of the conflicts that had broken out since the end of the twentieth century, to include predicting the appearance of future conflicts. According to Huntington, there will be a clash of civilizations since the world has been in an unreasonable era since the end of the Cold War and the position of the nation–state has not been of any significance. Far more than the political objectives of territorial take–overs, it is the religious element of culture that has become the main cause of conflict. It should be acknowledged that Huntington's "Clash of Civilizations" is a relatively simple theory which focuses on ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Yet, Huntington states with caution that the differences between his civilizations do not imply the surfacing of conflicts between them. In contrary, Huntington also develops a completely opposite argument. Without a doubt, Huntington declares that his civilizations are in conflict because they are driven by irreconcilable moral and political values, the necessity to survive, and the will to dominate. The characteristics of the new world order would be that much more disturbing because the civilizations would act according to the "kin–country syndrome," mainly those civilizations would partner with the less kin–civilizations. Eventually, a break out in conflict would arise along the fault lines between civilizations. Huntington's explanation of conflicts all over the world seem to make sense since a number of conflicts have arisen along his fault lines. Huntington states that "Islam has bloody borders," hence he describes the appearance of a prominent Islam threat for the western countries, in addition to the already present threats. His observation of the borders of his Islam civilizations clearly mirror the practical sources of conflicts on the ground. Moreover, Huntington argues that the Islamic civilization could use the help of the military, especially with China and their anti–western reaction, therefore creating a "Confucian–Islamic connection." A&P is located in a small town northern Boston, far away from the big cities. Thus, people living there are not ready for the changes in the way people dress openly and in mindsets. People's values in Sammy's community are conformed. At the beginning of the story, Sammy notices three girls in a bathing suit walking into the store, which really catches his eyes. Bathing suits are defined as improper dressing in public places except for the beach in his town. In his perspective, he does not consider that it is an inappropriate dressing in a local store. On the contrary, he thinks the girls are attracted to him, so he keeps on observing them. However, that's not the only reason Sammy is interested in them. He thinks these girls are different because what they were wearing undoubtedly go against the norm of the society in their time. Sammy describes that: "the girls were walking against the usual traffic" (748). For Sammy, the girls in bathing suits were actually using their own method to protest conservative rules. They violate the dressing rule in the town which strikes Sammy's mindset. He realizes the bathing suits symbolized personal freedom which is the value he aspires to have in his life. Love, disillusion, religion... every story has its own theme and its author leads the readers all the way to its understanding. The short story "A&P" is not an exception of this. Written by John Updike and published in the New Yorker in 1961, it tells the story of Sammy, a 19 years old cashier in an A&P grocery store who is amazed by the journey of three girls that enter the store dressed only in bikinis. The story is narrated by Sammy himself; therefore, the readers can almost palpate the narrator's innermost thoughts. Since the girls were improperly dressed, Lengel, the manager of the store, rebuked them. Sammy decided to defend the girls and quit his job to catch their attention. But this immature act will have a long–term consequence for this boy. The theme of A&P is led by the significance of its setting, the use of symbolism, and the characteristics of its main character. The setting of the story plays a special role in its progress. It is situated in an A&P that is five miles away from the beach and "you know, it's one thing to have a girl in a bathing suit down on the beach . . . and another thing in the cool of the A&P" (Pike 357–358). Society is male–dominated and women are discriminated against, whether they know it or not. Such a restrictive culture and societal views are indicated by the inner thoughts of the narrator, Sammy, who is the clerk at the supermarket. The interactions of three girls with the rest of the townspeople are documented in Sammy's mind. Sammy's descriptions of people, the dialect of the characters, and the actions that are noted converge to reveal the nature of the time and place of the A+P supermarket. Furthermore, the girls only speak when spoken to. This all indicates that the men of the society in "A+P" assume a superior role over the females. It is prudent not to miss the fact that the only time dialect is directed at the girls is when it is coming from a male and is against them, i.e. against what they are wearing and where they are, and there are no niceties towards the girls in this conversation in any way, shape, or form. The only occurrence of anyone defending the girls is when they have already been discriminated against and have exited the premises. The actions/interactions/reactions of the characters in this small setting also point to a female– suppressed environment. The males have the gall to stare openly at the girls as they go about their errands, while the women are shocked and "their eyes snapped back" to their respective business. Some might argue that this is normal for men to stare while the same sex–oriented people quickly avert their gazes. However, this is also indicative of a patriarchy. The status of the characters also indicates that even the store, an insignificantly small thing, follows the status quo of society. The males are the only ones with jobs, while the females are commented to be "houseslaves." The naming of the characters is also blatantly slanted against the females. In July, lawyers advice Haringey council social workers that they cannot legally take Peter into care. Later on in July Ms Ward makes a pre arranged visit to the families' home and manages to miss injuries as Peter was deliberately covered in chocolate to hide them. Police then hand over further reports to the CPS, including statements from 2 doctors saying that Peter's bruising was suggestive of "non accidental" injury, but prosecutors decide that there is not enough evidence to start a case. On Aug 1st Peter is taken to a child development clinic where the paediatrician decides she cannot carry out a complete check as Peter was miserable and cranky, and on the 2nd Aug police tell Peter's mother she will not be prosecuted. Finally on 3rd Aug a 999 call is made at 11.36am. Four minutes later the paramedics arrive to find Peter lying in a blood spattered cot. He was pronounced dead on arrival at the hospital. An attempt was made to cover the crime, as Peter's clothes and bedding were removed and dumped. Baby Peter was failed by police, social workers, doctors and lawyers. Leading to his death. • 53. The Call Of Cthulhu By H. P. Lovecraft Summary CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT In H.P. Lovecraft's short story "The call of Cthulhu," written in 1926, Lovecraft does not give his main character a name. H.P. Lovecraft does not tell the readers anything about the main character besides that his great uncle, George Gammell Angell, has died in an accident. When George Gammell Angell dies the main character goes through George's things, finding George's manuscript that starts the main characters investigation. The main character may not be given a name or have much development behind his character, but the main character is the narrator of the entire short story. However, there are some points of inner dialogue from the main character so the readers can understand his emotions. H.P. Lovecraft, although he does not develop the main character to a large extent, does develop the side characters to the point we know who they are and what happened to them. George Gammell Angell, as stated above, is the main characters great uncle, as well as, a professor at Brown University before his sudden accidental death. H.P. Lovecraft goes as far as describing George Gammell Angell's death: The Professor had been stricken whilst returning from the Newport boat; falling suddenly, as witnesses said, after having been jostled by a nautical–looking negro who had come from one of the queer dark courts on the deceased's home in Williams Street. Physicians were unable to find any visible disorder, but concluded after perplexed debate that some obscure ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The mundane, dull community in the A&P that surrounds Sammy challenges him to strive for something different. Sammy wants to experience what lies beyond the A&P. This story showcases a young man blooming into maturity, accepting responsibility and represents the reality of entering adulthood. It was a typical day at the A&P. "The "culture war" refers to a displacement of the classic economic conflicts that animated twentieth– century politics in the advanced democracies by newly emergent moral and religious ones" (Fiorina, Abrams, Pope, 2005, p. 2). Fiorina argues that this phenomenon does not exist; her argument under is persuasive for many reasons. I see the following as the main reasons: the first, is that the media portrays more polarization that there is in reality and the second being that Americans are more pragmatic that the advertised. Effects of the Media "Since media are part of the political class and talk mostly to the political class, the myth of popular polarization took root and grew." (Fiorina, Abrams, Pope, 2005, p. 167). Recently media has played a huge role in the country's politic; they share information, report events, and frame opinions. Fiorina explains that when interviewing, journalists have a tendency to observe those who hold political ground. These individuals do have polarized views; however, those beliefs do not represent that of the majority. Individuals who are more active in the political field are more likely to have polarized thoughts. She also discusses the focus of political activist and explains that they "are not normal people" in regards to general beliefs. While the political elite and political activists may be in the ... He's been working at this A&P for quite some time now so much that he's become bored with it. He works at the register and to keep himself entertained he pretends that the register is singing a song every time he uses it. Although he's been working there for some time, it becomes clear that he doesn't wish to be in that store much longer. It's also clear that the town that he lives in isn't somewhere he wants to be either and it isn't until the day girls came to the store that he begins to act on these dreams by quitting his job. • 63. The West : Unique, Not Universal, By Samuel P. Huntington In Samuel P. Huntington's article "The West: Unique, Not Universal," he addresses his audience with a very controversial question: Is Western Culture universal or unique? Huntington elaborately opens up this question with research and examples to explain and persuade readers that the West will never be a universal culture for all, but rather a unique culture that will be accepted by those who appreciate it. For decades now, historians and scholars have debated with one another to determine who is right and wrong. However, from a handful of articles from different scholars, Samuel Huntington's statement that the West is unique rather than universal is supported and even further elaborated on by these particular sources. A common understanding between all the sources, that must be noted, is that a civilization's culture is not comprised of material goods but rather their culmination of their religion(s), values, language(s) and traditions. While although there are scholars out their that negate the West is unique, a large amount of scholars still argue and strengthen Huntington's argument that the West has unique and exclusive characteristics that make them distinctive and rare. Samuel P. Huntington was a brilliant student and political scientist who wrote numerous articles and is most notably recognized for his novel "The Clash of Civilizations." He attended college at Yale University and went on to get his PhD in political science. Moreover he was a Harvard professor ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Huntington could be right about the reasons for this "clash" he describes as being "global", a clash which occurs in the near future. Let that future hold its destiny in its hands for now. You may remember his argument, about the source of our "great division" being cultural and "not primarily ideological." It is this that I plan to expand on but not at the expense of explaining it in totally non–characteristic manner. To further augment how culture will cause this apparent "clash of civilizations," I have attempted to map–out what I consider outstanding focuses in the process of this "clash." The ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... History itself is a diachronic science and constructing a true historical record coincidentally begins its origins in the West. History starts in Mesopotamia and Egypt then somehow works its way into Rome, then the text books, then the American psyche. It is this pattern, as opposed to the historical record other countries keep, which Americans rely on. This goes side–by–side with the repetitive role Euro–centrism plays in defining our origins and identity in society. Can an aggregation of narratives that help bridge the gap between empirical evidence that supports our origin as a species honestly rule over this post–World War Two triumphant state we live in? Can the world converge, or are the shifting patterns of philosophy out ruling this possibility? Our environment and technology serves as a back–drop to this triumphant society we familiarize with and here it is that one of my "branches" from the political/social tree emerges: There is no diversity in our culture, only dominance – of all societies; this is how we are "conditioned" to believe our origins are of the "Western" hemisphere. • 67. Present Themes In The First Day By Edward P. Jones American actress and model, Kristen Stewart, once said, "Judging a person does not define who they are. It defines who you are." –Kristen Stewart (A–Z Quotes). People judge others every single day. Silent eyes beat down on people and negative thoughts seeping into hearts. Everyone does it, but some just are clueless about the impact. This judgment is present in Edward P. Jones' "The First Day," where a little girl comes to realize that people are judging her and her mother for being who they are, and determining what they are like based on their status. In Jones' short story "The First Day," the present theme is that a person's status determines how a person is viewed, liked, and how economically stable they are. This focus is present through the imagery of the little girl and the characterization of the mother. One way Jones shows the theme that a person's status determines how a person is viewed, liked, and how economically stable they are, is through the imagery of the little girl. It is an African–American girl's first day of school, and the mother is getting her all dolled up to make a good impression. "I am wearing a checkeredlike blue–and–green cotton dress, and scattered about these colors are bits of yellow and white and brown. My mother has uncharacteristically spent nearly an hour on my hair that morning, plaiting and replaiting so that now my scalp tingles" (Jones 1). The mother really wants to make a good impression on the new school that her daughter is going to, and not look poor or different. When saying that the mother has "uncharacteristically" done her hair, the mother is going out of her way to do something special. The mother has spent an hour on this girl's hair for her very first day of school, which is not like herself. Thus showing, that the mother really cares about the first impression that the daughter makes at her new school and community, and how they are viewed with their status. The mother is changing the image of her daughter to try and better her off. Ultimately, through imagery, the highlighted theme is that people are judged based on their statuses. The mother in the story also proves that people are judging. Through the use of characterization by Edward P Jones' "The ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 69. Analysis Of ' A & P ' Choice and Class are the two major themes in Updike's "A&P," displayed through the main character, Sammy, and several background characters, including the three girls the story is based around. These two ideals are explored through the point of view of the main character, the depth in which the characters are described(both physically and in their own life) and how the characters are framed in relation to one another. Part of what helped Updike frame the themes was the in depth description of the characters. Every character, even secondary, or characters who seemingly had nothing to do with the plot, were described in great detail. Not only were their physical aspects detailed, but even how the characters moved in the story, or how they interacted with each other. For example, Sammy's description of the three girls, when he says, "The sheep pushing their carts down the aisle––the girls were walking against the usual traffic (not that we have one–way signs or anything)"(Updike 463). That description of how the girls moved in the store is one of the first inklings of individuality. They were moving against the grain of the people in the store, but also they are moving against the grain of society and social norms. The way they showed their individuality is also exemplifies through the description of the swimsuits they were wearing. It is one of the central parts of the story because wearing only swimsuits in a store was and still is seen as improper. This defiance of decency ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
