Humans are in born explorers. Throughout history, one of the deepest human impulses has been the drive to voyages to explore, encounter, and reveal the unknown. The history of exploration is complete with noteworthy success stories and the unfortunate failures of many explorers. People have always been curious about the world and this quest for knowledge has driven explorers on bold adventures throughout the ages. Voyages and Exploration has also been motivated by the desire for wealth and power, the wish to spread one’s culture and religion, and the need to reach new trading partners. Many navigational tools and map-making developed over time have enabled explorers to reach these goals.

16 386 Chapter Outline Global Maritime Expansion Before 1450 > What were the objectives and major accomplishments of the voyages of exploration undertaken by Chinese, Polynesians, and other non-Western peoples? European Expansion, 1400-1550 > In this era of long-distance exploration, did Europeans have any special advantages over other cultural regions? Encounters with Europe, 1450-1550 > What explains the different nature of Europe's interactions with Africa, India, and the Americas? Conclusion . • ENVIRONMENT + TECHNOLOGY Vasco da Gama's Fleet • DIVERSITY + DOMINANCE Kongo's Christian King Ferdinand Magellan Navigating the Straits Connecting the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans This late· sixteenth-century print uses fanciful representations of native peoples and creatures to embellish Magel Ian's circumnavigation of the globe. The Maritime Revolution, to 1550 I n 1511 young Ferdinand Magellan sailed from Europe around the southern tip of Africa and eastward across the Indian Ocean as a member of the first Portuguese expedition to explore the East Indies (maritime Southeast Asia). Eight years later, this time in the service of Spain, he led an expedition that sought to reach the East Indies by sailing westward. By the middle of 1521 Magellan's expedition had achieved its goal by sailing across the Atlantic, rounding the southern tip of South America, and crossing the Pacific Ocean-but at a high price. Of the five ships that had set out from Spain in 1519, only three made the long passage across the vast Pacific. Dozens of sailors died from starvation and disease during the voyage. In the Philippines, Magellan, having survived numerous mutinies during the voyage, died in battle on April 27, 1521, while aiding a local ruler who had promised to become a Christian. To consolidate their dwindling resources, the expedition's survivors burned the least seaworthy of their remaining three ships and consolidated men and supplies. In the end only the Victoria made it home across the Indian Ocean and back to Europe. Nevertheless, the Victoria's return to Spain on September 8, 1522, was a crowning example of Europeans' determination to make themselves masters of the oceans. A century of daring and dangerous voyages backed by the Portuguese crown had opened new routes through the South Atlantic to Africa, Brazil, and the rich trade of the Indian Ocean. Rival voyages sponsored by Spain since 1492 opened new con tacts with the American continents. A maritime revolution was under way that would change the course of history. This new maritime era marked the end of a long period when Asia had initiated most overland and maritime expansion. Asia had been the source of the most useful technologies and the most influential systems of belief. It was also home to the most powerful states and the richest trading networks. The success of Iberian voyages of exploration in the following century would redirect t ...

Zheng He's Inscription This inscription was carved on a stele erected at a temple to the goddess the Celestial Spouse at Changle in Fujian province in 1431. Message written before his last voyage. The Imperial Ming Dynasty unifying seas and continents, surpassing the three dynasties even goes beyond the Han and Tang dynasties. The countries beyond the horizon and from the ends of the earth have all become subjects and to the most western of the western or the most northern of the northern countries, however far they may be, the distance and the routes may be calculated. Thus the barbarians from beyond the seas, though their countries are truly distant, "have come to audience bearing precious objects and presents. The Emperor, approving of their loyalty and sincerity, has ordered us (Zheng) He and others at the head of several tens of thousands of officers and flag-troops to ascend (use) more than one hundred large ships to go and confer presents on them in order to make manifest (make it happen) the transforming power of the (imperial) virtue and to treat distant people with kindness. From the third year of Yongle (1405) till now we have seven times received the commission (official permission) of ambassadors to countries of the western ocean. The barbarian countries which we have visited are: by way of Zhancheng (Champa Cambodia), Zhaowa (Java), Sanfoqi (Palembang- Indonesia) and Xianlo (Siam/Thailand) crossing straight over to Xilanshan (Ceylon- Sri Lanka) in South India, Guli (Calicut) [India], and Kezhi (Cochin India), we have gone to the western regions Hulumosi (Hormuz Between Oman and Iran), Adan (Aden), Mugudushu (Mogadishu- Somalia), altogether more than thirty countries large and small. We have traversed more than one hundred thousand li (distance of 500 meters) of immense water spaces and have beheld in the ocean huge waves like mountains rising sky-high, and we have set eyes on barbarian regions far away hidden in a blue transparency of light vapours, while our sails loftily unfurled like clouds day and night continued their course (rapid like that) of a star, traversing those savage waves as if we were treading a public thoroughfare. Truly this was due to the majesty and the good fortune of the Court and moreover we owe it to the protecting virtue of the divine Celestial Spouse. The power of the goddess having indeed been manifested in previous times has been abundantly revealed in the present generation. When we arrived in the distant countries we captured alive those of the native kings who were not respectful and exterminated those barbarian robbers who were engaged in piracy, so that consequently the sea route was cleansed and pacified (to make someone or something peaceful) and the natives put their trust in it. All this is due to the favours of the goddess. We have respectfully received an Imperial commemorative composition (essay/piece of writing) exalting the miraculous favours, which is the highest recompense and.

What relationship developed between the new realm of Đại Việt (northern Vietnam) and the growing southeast coast of China in the early second millennium C.E.? Fan Chengda's report of the 1170s on the Vietnamese spoke of a strong interaction between the two regions, of Min Chinese moving into Đại Việt. This note looks at commercial and educational developments on the southeast coast of China and relates these develop-ments to the emerging Trần dynasty and the increased significance of literati in Đại Việt.

Encarta Historical Essays reflect the knowledge and insight of leading historians. This collection of essays is assembled to support the National Standards for World History. In this essay, Craig Lockard of the University of Wisconsin at Green Bay examines the influence throughout Asia of China under the great Tang Dynasty. Tang China, he demonstrates, maintained a superpower status that only a few nations have equaled. Tang Civilization and the Chinese Centuries By Craig Lockard In every era, one or two countries have existed that can be called superpowers because of their influence in world military, economic, political, and cultural affairs. Superpowers even developed in ancient times, as the ancient Persian Empire and the conquests of Alexander the Great set the stage for Rome, Maurya India, and Han China to dominate the western, southern, and eastern regions, respectively, of Eurasia. Over the centuries that followed, the Arabs, Mongols, Portuguese, Spanish, and Dutch, successively, achieved powerful positions in a widening world, followed by the British in the 18th and 19th centuries. In the 20th century, the dominant nation has been the United States. Indeed, the decades since 1945 have sometimes been called “the American Century” because U.S. power and influence have been so great around the world. Transregional dominance is difficult to maintain, however, as other civilizations eventually catch up and forge ahead. The influence of the United States will have to prove enduring to match the longevity of China’s status as a superpower, which began in the middle of the first millennium AD. The period from 300 to 1000 was a time of intensive exchange and interaction across Eurasia. Several civilizations stand out as major influences. Gupta India, Byzantium, and the Islamic caliphates of the Middle East were remarkable powerhouses. Some world historians view the years from about 600 to 1500 as the Chinese Millennium, with China as the largest, strongest, and most populous civilization in Eurasia. China's success beginning under the great Tang dynasty (618-907) would prove to be the longest lasting period of success in world history. Indeed, the Tang dynasty is regarded by many historians as the most glorious period of China's long history. The years during which the Tang empire experienced its greatest power established a pattern for China that would continue throughout the Song and Ming dynasties into early modern times. Tang rule set a standard mark on many facets of Chinese life, including literature and the arts. For this reason, Tang China was admired and copied by many other peoples. During Tang rule, China had its greatest influence on eastern Asia and, at the same time, carried out active trade with peoples across Eurasia. For more than 100 years, the Tang empire stretched deep into Central Asia, and various aspects of Chinese culture spread to Korea and Japan. Buddhism flourished, linking China to ...

Ming Shi-lu – Zheng He 11 Jul 1405: The eunuch Zheng He and others were sent to take Imperial orders of instruction to the various countries in the Western Ocean, and to confer upon the kings of those countries patterned fine silks and variegated thin silks interwoven with gold thread, as appropriate. 2 Oct 1407: The Eunuch Director Zheng He who had been sent to the various countries of the Western Ocean, returned, bringing the pirate Chen Zu-yi and others in fetters. Previously, when he had arrived at Old Port, he came across Zu-yi and so on and sent people to bring them to negotiated pacification. Zu-yi and the others feigned surrender but secretly plotted to attack the Imperial army. He and the others found out about this and, marshalling the troops, prepared defenses. When the forces led by Zu-yi attacked, He sent his troops out to do battle. Zu-yi suffered a great defeat. Over 5,000 of the bandit gang were killed, while ten of the bandit ships were burnt and seven captured. Further, two false bronze seals were seized and three prisoners, including Zu-yi, were taken alive. When they arrived at the capital, it was ordered that all the prisoners be beheaded. 6 Jul 1411: The eunuch Zheng He and others, who had been sent as envoys to the various countries in the Western Ocean, returned and presented Ya-lie Ku-nai-er, the captured king of the country of Sri Lanka, and his family members. Previously, He and the others had been sent as envoys to the various fan countries. However, when they reached Sri Lanka, Ya-lie Ku-nai-er was insulting and disrespectful. He wished to harm He, but He came to know of this and left. Ya-lie Ku-nai-er also acted in an unfriendly way to neighboring countries and repeatedly intercepted and robbed their envoys. All the fan countries suffered from his actions. When He returned, he again passed Sri Lanka and the king enticed him to the country. The king then had his son Na-yan demand gold, silver and precious objects, but He would not give these to him. The king then secretly dispatched over 50,000 fan troops to rob He's ships. They also felled trees to create obstructions and impede He's route of return, so that he could not render assistance. He and the others found out about this and they gathered their force and set off back to their ships. However, the route had already been blocked. He thus spoke to his subordinates, saying: "The majority of the troops have already been dispatched. The middle of the country will be empty." He also said: "Our merchants and troops are isolated and nervous and will be unable to act. If they are attacked by surprise, the attackers will achieve their purpose." Thus, he secretly ordered persons to go to the ships by another route with orders that the government troops were to fight to the death in opposing the attackers. He then personally led 2,000 of his troops through a by-path and attacked the royal city by surprise. They took the city and captured alive Ya-lie Ku-nai-er, his f ...

In 2.0 version of the presentation, I have added several slides on the Srivijaya and of the Chola Empire and reconstruction of the Borobudur ship. To cover over 2 millennium of maritime trade, in the Middle East, India, SE Asia and China under 50 slides, can only give us the briefest gleam into the course of history. To get the benefit of the slides, you will need to set aside some time to read through the contents. Our perceptions on the maritime contacts are changing too. The discovery in particular of dozens of ancient shipwrecks in Southeast Asia has built up a picture of the historic trade and the technology. The voyage of the Chinese mariner Zhenghe and his voyages to the Indian Ocean. Until recently it is relatively unknown in the West. When I get started, I found that these spectacular Zhenghe's voyages were only the last brilliant chapter of the Asian Maritime book, before the arrival of the European by sea. As I dig deeper, I discovered dozen of shipwrecks and the achievements went far into the past. The Srivijaya was the Asian equivalent of the European maritime power, like Venice. Their power was based on the control of the sea-lanes, with a series of ports and they rarely ventured into the hinterlands. This and other powers in Southeast Asia were in turned seeded by an even older maritime power in south India, the Cholas Empire. From India the journey took me further west to the lands of the Arab and Persian, the maritime world of Sinbad the Sailor. Until the arrival of the European and before the development of the Chinese maritime network in the Tang Dynasty, Arab dhows sailed across the ocean and the seas from ends to ends, linking distance people of China to the European. At last, I arrived in Alexandria, the ancient trading hub of the Mediterranean world, a bridge between the East with the West. In the slides, I have included three incidences of overseas traders being massacred in Chinese history. This is not to put black marks on an otherwise successful Chinese civilisation, but to remind ourselves how history have been sanctified one way or another. History should be a honest account of the past, without distortions and omissions. History is the witness. I hope in these few slides, would help to understanding an aspect of human civilization on Earth. Too often our own ego-centric interest becomes a source of our own ignorance.

Generative AI refers to a class of machine learning algorithms that are designed to generate new data samples that are similar to those in the training data. Unlike traditional AI models that are trained to recognize patterns and make predictions, generative AI models have the ability to create entirely new data based on the patterns they have learned. This is achieved through techniques such as generative adversarial networks (GANs), variational autoencoders (VAEs), and transformer architectures, among others.

Here comes another enlightening document that dives into the thrilling world of breaking BitLocker, Windows' attempt at full disk encryption. This analysis will walk you through the myriad of creative hacks, from the classic cold boot attacks—because who doesn't love freezing their computer to steal some data—to exploiting those oh-so-reliable TPM chips that might as well have a "hack me" sign on them. We'll also cover some software vulnerabilities, because Microsoft just wouldn't be the same without a few of those sprinkled in for good measure. And let's not forget about intercepting those elusive decryption keys; it's like a digital treasure hunt! So, whether you're a security expert, a forensic analyst, or just a curious cat in the world of cybersecurity, enjoy the read, and maybe keep that data backed up somewhere safe, yeah? ------- This document provides a comprehensive analysis of the method demonstrated in the video "Breaking Bitlocker - Bypassing the Windows Disk Encryption" where the author showcases a low-cost hardware attack capable of bypassing BitLocker encryption. The analysis will cover various aspects of the attack, including the technical approach, the use of a Trusted Platform Module (TPM) chip, and the implications for security practices. The analysis provides a high-quality summary of the demonstrated attack, ensuring that security professionals and specialists from different fields can understand the potential risks and necessary countermeasures. The document is particularly useful for cybersecurity experts, IT professionals, and organizations that rely on BitLocker for data protection and to highlight the need for ongoing security assessments and the potential for similar vulnerabilities in other encryption systems.

Because observability is such a broad topic – and often something we learn on the job – it can feel like there’s too much to learn at once. But you don’t have to tackle everything and can start with the basics and build from there! Monitoring and observability aren’t traditionally found in software curriculums and many of us cobble this knowledge together from whatever vendor or ecosystem we were first introduced to and whatever is a part of your current company’s observability stack. No matter what tooling is in place, there are still observability fundamentals that developers should know. That’s why I’ve put together a primer on the different telemetry types, when to use them, how to understand the data journey, and what to look for in time series graphs.
