International Students Can Overcome Challenges
International students face many different challenges when studying abroad. This is due to many
factors. First, they are living in a country very far away from their own. The country they are
studying at has a very different way of life than theirs. Further more, the laws in that country are
much different than the laws in their own country. Due to that they face a lot of problems trying to
adapt to this new culture. Me personally as an international student in the US studying at ASU, have
faced three particularly difficult challenges that I was able to overcome through time. In this essay I
will explain how international students can overcome tough challenges and situations. The first
challenge, and in my opinion the most crucial challenge that I had to face was learning the English
language, and communicating with different people. Almost every international student is faced with
this challenge; Alberto Fernández Fernández said, "International students often face adjustment
issues impacting their level of satisfaction with their experience. These involve oral language
proficiency, as well as feelings of anxiety and isolation resulting from language deficiencies". This

Iraq Dishes
All around the world there are distinct cultures that have a variety of cuisines and techniques for
preparing them. This paper will discuss in depth two different dishes that come from different
regions and how its sustainability impacts its social–cultural resilience. Baghdad, Iraq and Gaza,
Palestine both deal with political and environment factors that impact their dishes, but sustainability
in Gaza is less complex because its dish ingredients are not harm by governmental regulations and

Café Morocco. The last time I visited this restaurant I was 5 years old. We were celebrating Eid, an
Islamic holiday that we celebrate at the end of our most holy month, Ramadan. Baba (father in
Arabic) invited all of our family and friends to celebrate. This would be the last time he would invite
people to his restaurant. This was his last day owning Café Morocco. Café Morocco is a
Mediterranean restaurant, here in Downtown Sacramento. I never visited the restaurant after that
day. I just didn't feel the need to if it wasn't baba's head peeking through the window to the kitchen.
Café Morocco Mediterranean Cuisine was plastered on the wall. They haven't changed the sign. I
wonder if the sign has really lasted all this time, or if at some point they had to redo the sign. And if
so, why did they choose to keep it the same. Why did they think Baba's sign and image fit theirs?
The outside is simple, just a small restaurant and this sign. I walked in. First thing my eyes look for
is the kitchen, to look through the window and see the cook's head. It wasn't Baba, but some other
man following his dreams.
The lights were dim, the music flowing through the speakers were upbeat songs with Arabic words.
I can catch a few words here and there, but still I never know what these songs mean.

Visiting a Middle Eastern Grocery Store
For this project I was planning to visit some kind of international or ethnic event such a festival or
foreign holiday celebration. However, after spending couple hours of searching on google,
unfortunately I was not able to find any kind of international activities around Denver area that were
scheduled for the end of March. Trip to the any kind of church did not sound very entertaining and
inspiring to me. I am not atheist and do believe that there is some kind of superstitious force or god
out there, but all the church visits and religious rituals or services bore me to death. So, I decided
that church trip would not be such a good idea. Since my last choice for this project was visiting
Ethnic grocery store I got on computer and googled "Middle Eastern grocery stores in Denver". I
decided to go with Middle Eastern store and not Asian or Hispanic because I've never been in one,
and never really tried any type of Middle Eastern food, but I do like to try different foods and love to
cook. Besides that I go to Asian stores quite often, and Hispanic stores are all over Colorado, so I

Indigenous Australian and Middle Eastern cultures have many similarities when it comes to the
factors that influenced their dietary choices throughout history and today. However with these
similarities also came many differences as well. Traditions, religion, certain rituals, beliefs, outside
influences and historical events were all huge factors that greatly influenced the dietary choices and
the future development of each of these two cultures.
Before the European invasion in the 1700's, Indigenous Australians lived in tribes all over the
country, with an estimated population of 750,000 people (Australian Museum, 2013). By 1901, less

When Europeans first arrived, they brought with them their own culture and religion, that they then
forced upon the indigenous, uprooting their 65,000 year old belief systems and changing their way
of life, and in turn their people forever (Jalata, 2013). Western society has been influencing their
culture ever since.
Middle Eastern culture is also one of the world's oldest cultures, and they too were semi–nomadic.
Unlike Indigenous Australian culture, it is still very predominant today. They enjoyed a variety of
very different foods such as dairy products like cheese, milk, and cream. Foods that were very rarely
seen within indigenous communities in Australia. Meats such as lamb, cereals and grains, fruits and
vegetables, and even fish are other traditional foods of the Middle East. Bread, rice and other grains
were also a common staple in many regions. The Middle East is made up of many different
countries including Turkey, Syria, Iran (formally known as Persia), Egypt, Saudi Arabia and
Lebanon. For the most part their culture, religion and cuisine is similar due to generations of outside
influences. Countries such as Russia, India, America, Spain and even their Middle Eastern
neighbours have influenced their cuisine over the years with the introduction of foods such as
tomatoes, yoghurt, dates and figs that were introduced to the Persian diet during the Arab invasion,
and olive oil (Food in Every Country, 2010).

traditions were originally brought together by the Ottoman Empire. The Ottoman Empire is a multi–
ethnic and a multi–religious state. During the early years of the republic, the government invested a
really large amount of resources into fine arts such as architecture, paintings and sculpture. This was
done as both a process of modernization and of creating a cultural identity. Due to the different
historical factors defining the Turkish identity, the culture of Turkey combines clear efforts of
modernization and Westernization undertaken in varying degrees since the 1800's, with a
simultaneous desire to maintain traditional religion, as well as, historical values. Turkish cuisine
inherited its Ottoman heritage which could also be described as a fusion and refinement of
Armenian, Greek, Persian and Turkic cuisines. Turkish cuisine also influenced these cuisines and
other neighboring cuisines, as well as, Western European cuisines. Ottomans fused various culinary

  • 1. International Students Can Overcome Challenges International students face many different challenges when studying abroad. This is due to many factors. First, they are living in a country very far away from their own. The country they are studying at has a very different way of life than theirs. Further more, the laws in that country are much different than the laws in their own country. Due to that they face a lot of problems trying to adapt to this new culture. Me personally as an international student in the US studying at ASU, have faced three particularly difficult challenges that I was able to overcome through time. In this essay I will explain how international students can overcome tough challenges and situations. The first challenge, and in my opinion the most crucial challenge that I had to face was learning the English language, and communicating with different people.
