My Summer in Chicago
I couldn't help but to feel anxious and excited. It was my first time being in such a vast city and I
couldn't wait to explore it. The time was near the end of July, this is when my dad usually enjoys
taking our summer vacations, primarily outside of our state to somewhere else new and exciting.
That summer my dad decided to take a week long road trip and visit, Wisconsin Dells, Chicago, St.
Louis, and Madison. When I had heard him say Chicago I had already imagined the tall buildings
surrounding me, and taking a walk near Lake Michigan on the Navy Pier. Overall, I had felt joyful
about the trip. He wanted to show my sisters and I all the adventures he did in Chicago when he was
my age. To tell the truth, I was more excited to visit Chicago a little more since it was such an
extensive city and I had wanted to visit there ever since I was younger.
A few days before the trip, my dad, my sister Nina, and I, had done some research and added up the
cost of the trip and looked for hotels and restaurants to visit during the time we were there and on
our road trip. After about an hour of research on Chicago, we had our plan of what to do for our time

This beach is known to be one of the most popular beaches in the downtown Chicago loop area and
is always packed with tons of people in the summer. People are always looking for ways to avoid

The Urban Setting Of Chicago
Chicago, Illinois is home of the Cubs, Oprah and most notably it has a skyline filled with amazing
skyscrapers. It was in this city that stone masonry, due to its tendency to be very heavy and needing

signs in the neighborhoods with pictures of skulls, crossbones, and coffins. It was a long process for
many urban whites, European immigrants, and blacks to coexist. However, it was such a unique

Carl Sandburg describes Chicago as a tough and hefty city. Chicago is portrayed as a proud city, a
city proud to be so "strong and cunning" whereas other cities of the time were not. Chicago is
characterized by the people and workers who live in it. Sandburg loves Chicago even though it is a
brutally tough city. Sandburg uses imagery, personification, and punctuation to characterize the city
as an actual person.
Sandburg uses imagery that gives Chicago the reputation of being wicked, crooked, and brutal. The
author gives references of when people have called the city such names. Sandburg says, "And they
tell me you are crooked and I answer: Yes, it is true I have seen/ the gunman kill and go free to kill
again," (line 8–9). Not only did Sandburg write this line to give an example of one of the things
people call his city but he is also saying yes I have seen it happen, Chicago can be dangerous.
Despite what people say about his city he still describes it as proud. Sandburg sneers, "Come and
show me another city with lifted head singing so proud to be/ alive and coarse and strong and
cunning," (14–15). Sandburg defends his city while some people think it is cruel and harsh he
describes Chicago as proud of those characteristics. Sandburg portrays Chicago as wicked, crooked,
and brutal, but takes pride in living in a city that is so tough.
Sandburg uses personification to describe Chicago as an actual living person. The author
characterizes Chicago as various types of workers.

Chicago is mostly populated by Caucasian's (32 %), African Americans (31.4%), and Hispanics
(28.8%). With these percentages so close I creates wide range of culture throughout the city. Denver
is similar in which the three races that populate the city most are Caucasians (53.3%), African
Americans (9.4%), and Hispanics (30.9%). The big difference is that Denver has a higher rate of
Caucasians by 21.3 % and a lower rate of African Americans by 22%, the Hispanic % is very similar
in both cities. Within these races our different forms of relationship status, including Never married,
married, separated, widowed, divorce. Denver's adult population consists mostly of married couples
(37.8%) and never married (43.7%). The remaining demographics are divorced partners (11%),
separated (5.1%), and widowed (2.4%). Chicago compares to Denver in which married couples
(33.9%) and never married people (49.8%) are the highest percentages by quite the margin.
Chicago's divorced (8%), separated (5.7%), and widowed (2.5%) adult's percentages are just slightly

The Chicago Teachers Union And Chicago Public Schools

For the second time in almost 4 years, over 350,000 Chicago Public School Students may not be
able to go to school because of the CTU Strike that is currently in progress today (The Washington
Post). The issue between the Chicago Teachers Union and Chicago Public Schools has not been
solved yet due to disagreements about the income received. The Chicago Teachers Union has made
offers to school administrations; however, the responses were not in their favor. The union has been
in progress of agreeing on a contract "since November 2011, [and the strike that occurred at the
time] was the first to hit the Windy City in 25 years" (Liebelson). The issue must have erupted due
to a misconception or a realization of problems occurring. Chicago Teachers Union choosing to
strike does not affect charter schools since they are not a part of Chicago Public Schools. The issue
of school strikes can be fixed by increasing the budgets and providing useful resources to teachers in
order to improve the level of education.
The Chicago Teachers Union (CTU) Strike in 2012 affected every single Chicago Public School and
their Students in 2012. The strike affected about 600 public schools which is over 350, 000 students.
The CTU began negotiating their contract with CPS in November of 2011, but their demands were
not met. Since the negotiating did not solve the issue, the Chicago Teachers Union chose to organize
a strike for the first time in Chicago in 25 years.

The city of Chicago is well known for its urban setting and advanced industry that's centrally
located in the heart of the United States. For years, Chicago has been a passageway for goods and an
epicenter for commerce which feeds an intricate economy. Moreover, Chicago is a city filled with a
high degree of diversity. Chicago's diversity, both through class and culture, has been the forefront
for national movements advocating for labor and civil rights. In the collection of poems, Chicago
Poems, Carl Sandburg explores the many layers of Chicago, while sharing his own perceptions of
the city.
In the poem "Chicago," Sandburg expresses the importance of Chicago while addressing the

This description creates an image in the readers' minds of an industrial laborer during his lunch
break: it is nowhere near glamorous. Then, Sandburg juxtaposes the image of the worker to the
wealthy men and women passing by him on a train. The people on the train seem to be enjoying
themselves. Sandburg describes them, "eating steaks running with brown gravy,/ Strawberries and
cream, eclaires and coffee" (5–6). The difference between the meal the laborer is eating and the
myriad of food the wealthy people on the train are eating points out the blatant inequality in the city
of Chicago. Through vivid imagery and the connection between the railroad tracks and the train,
Sandburg illustrates the dynamic between the working class and the upper class. The upper class can
enjoy all the luxuries that Chicago has to offer, but it is the working class that provides these
luxuries. Sandburg emphasizes the laborers role, "...goes back to the second half of a ten–hour day's
work/ Keeping the road–bed so the roses and jonquils/ Shake hardly at all in the cut glass vases" (9–

The play Chicago was written in 1926 by Maurine Dallas Watkins. The director of the Movie
Chicago, Rob Marshall, used all resources available, the movie starts out in a club with Velma
dancing on stage. Roxie is standing in the back her nonchalantly. Roxie had no idea was to come.
Plot In the beginning of the movie it only shows Roxie watching Velma on stage wanting to be just
like her. Next Roxie leaves with Fred Casley, and they go back to her apartment. The audience sees
them all over each other on the way home. When they get back to the room after Roxie and Fred had
the affair, Fred tries to walk out on her and won't stay. Fred shoves her to the floor and physically

There was so much movement going across the stage from all directions. The direction and
choreography is obviously felt to a greater extent in the musical. The movie used the Cell block
tango as a way of giving a back story to each of the women in the jail. In the movies, the audience
does not really have to move their eyes across the stage because what the director wants you to see
is in the middle of the screen. In the musical, the director will have actors on all corners of the stage
creating a whole picture. In the large dance numbers the audience looks at the stage as a whole.
