Chicago Antiquated Process
1. Overview
With one of the largest city governments in the United States, the City of Chicago touches the lives
of a lot of people. The city provides residents with services ranging from basic sanitation, health and
human services to major public works projects and infrastructure. In 2013, the city decided it
wanted to improve the way it does business and change the way it interacts with residents. The city
needed a holistic way to bring its antiquated process and communications into the digital age. A
great many of the city processes still operated on paper, with little or no cross–departmental
integration. Combined antiquated process, the City of Chicago is a large organization with over 30
divisions. In many cases, city employees ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Utilizing Microsoft SharePoint Online features of Office 365, the city was able to automate and
streamline a great number of business processes. In many areas, the city was still using a "paper
process" to conduct business with residents and contractors. The antiquated processes are slow,
expensive and prone to human error. The city wanted to improve not only its own efficiency,
however overall customer service to the residents of Chicago. "Over the last decade, the consumer
experience has changed," says Berman, (2016) "People are now used to doing their banking online
at any hour and ordering products from the comfort of their home. They've also come to expect 24–
hour service from their government, which challenges us to find different ways to tailor our services
to them ". (2016)
A great example of Office 365 enhanced process automation is with the Chicago Department of
Finance. Until its move to Office 365, the City Department of Transportation paid all of its
contractors through a paper process. The amount of overhead involved with the processing and
storage of the paper documentation alone was staggering. Moving the workload to the cloud
removed paper almost completely from the process; greatly improving speed and accuracy. "Each
project's paperwork could fill up 50 boxes, creating a storage issue", says Mohammed Pakshir,
Manager of Transportation.

Chicago Case Study
On May 1st, 1893, the political and economic elite of the city of Chicago spared no expense when
they host the Columbian Exposition, which showcased the technological, economic, and social
capabilities of the United States of America and the City of Chicago to the world (Hoyt, 2003). For
the United States, this cultural, technological, and economic showcase was an example of the
massive capabilities of the country that now rivaled–perhaps even surpassed the capabilities of
Europe. For Chicago, the hope was to cement a change in its social and cultural appearance to the
outside world. Although one of America's fastest growing cities–as well as one of the largest,
Chicago was having immense struggles with its image as its impoverished and marginalized ...

Fredrick Douglass famously criticized the fair for excluding African Americans. This exclusion,
Douglass said, was an intentional attempt to delegitimize and degrade the economic intellect and
capabilities of African American people. Douglass wrote that it was part of a broader determination
to keep African Americans down (Douglass, 1893). This effort was largely unsuccessful as we see in
the current time, but some merits can be given to the troubled past of the City of Chicago and
exclusive events like this causing unmeasurable harm with the Black population within the city of

Summer In Chicago Essay
My Summer in Chicago
I couldn't help but to feel anxious and excited. It was my first time being in such a vast city and I
couldn't wait to explore it. The time was near the end of July, this is when my dad usually enjoys
taking our summer vacations, primarily outside of our state to somewhere else new and exciting.
That summer my dad decided to take a week long road trip and visit, Wisconsin Dells, Chicago, St.
Louis, and Madison. When I had heard him say Chicago I had already imagined the tall buildings
surrounding me, and taking a walk near Lake Michigan on the Navy Pier. Overall, I had felt joyful
about the trip. He wanted to show my sisters and I all the adventures he did in Chicago when he was
my age. To tell the truth, I was more excited to visit Chicago a little more since it was such an
extensive city and I had wanted to visit there ever since I was younger.
A few days before the trip, my dad, my sister Nina, and I, had done some research and added up the
cost of the trip and looked for hotels and restaurants to visit during the time we were there and on
our road trip. After about an hour of research on Chicago, we had our plan of what to do for our time
in Chicago. That night, It was difficult to fall asleep, although I wasn't surprised I usually didn't fall
asleep right away before a vacation, I'm usually too excited.
Morning soon came and my dad, my younger sister Niomi, my sister Nina, and I were all ready to
leave and finally begin the drive to

Chicago During The World's Fair, Chicago
AMERICA IN THE WORLD (GLOBAL CONTEXT)
1. "The White City had drawn men and protected them; the Black City now welcomed them back,
on the eye of winter, with filth, starvation, and violence" (pg 323). During the World's Fair, Chicago
was a truly wonderful place. At first, all the people were distracted by the actual fair, but after
everyone had dispersed, the White City returned to the Black City it normally was. All of the
success that the head architects and Chicago's people believed the fair had achieved didn't leave a
lasting imprint on the city. The fair ended, the magic faded, and The Black City swallowed the
White City whole.
2. "Too many features of the fair remained unfinished, Burnham acknowledged. He and his brigade
of architects, draftsmen, engineers, and contractors had accomplished so much in an impossibly
short time, but apparently not enough to overcome the damping effect of the fast–degrading
economy." (Page 240). The fair had a set opening day but somehow everything was still not
completely finished. It was a huge feat and even what they did accomplish was amazing, but it
doesn't make sense to open to an unfinished fair. The poor economy certainly doesn't help matters,
but people wouldn't necessarily want to spend money at a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

"Chicago has disappointed her enemies and astonished the world." (310) These quotes, along with
many others, show how truly "magical" the Chicago World's Fair actually was. The nightlife was
especially extravagant with special shows and attractions that citizens would never be able to see
otherwise. As for the quote on page 310, Chicago really did astonish the whole world. The fair was
made specifically to show New York who was really boss all while proving to the world that
Chicago could create a fair so well put together that it would shame the Paris fair attendance record
out of the ballpark by at least 300,000 visitors for one day. This is a national fair, which was

Words To Describe Chicago
Dangerous, chaotic, gun violence, murder rate, and "Chirac" are all words used by various amounts
of people on twitter, when asked to describe Chicago using one word or phrase. If I were to describe
the city of Chicago, I would simply say: complex, diverse, misunderstood, windy, and lastly
beautiful. Many people who view Chicago as a bad city, because of all the crime and murder rate,
which is why people refer to Chicago as "Chirac". Being born and raised in Chicago, I can tell you
that Chicago is a much better city than most people view it as. This windy city, specifically
downtown Chicago loop, is such a beautiful place to visit in the summer and has special meaning to
me.

This beach is known to be one of the most popular beaches in the downtown Chicago loop area and
is always packed with tons of people in the summer. People are always looking for ways to avoid
thinking about the sun, and North Avenue beach is the perfect place to be to avoid your thoughts on
the extremely hot weather. I love to feel my feet soak into the soft, warm sand. There are volleyball
nets set up in the sand, so I always make sure I have a ball to play. I can play volleyball for hours on
the sand, although when I finish, my wrists are as red as tomatoes. After I play volleyball, I prepare
myself to get in the water. The water is always cold of course. But, on a hot and humid day, the
temperature of the water just right for me. There is also has a beach house shaped like a boat, where
you can go in and put your belongings in lockers or use the washroom. There are more activities to
do at North Avenue Beach other than playing volleyball and swimming. You can tan, people watch,
rent bikes to ride, rent jet skis or kayaks, or grab a snack from the concessions stands that people set
up. Many people rent bikes to ride them down lake shore drive. On the other hand, many people also
go to North Avenue beach just to buy food. I love to buy funnel cakes. I always get a funnel cake

Diversity In Chicago
Since the six grade I always wanted to travel to Chicago for band. So I joined a band I had an
extremely fun Time. I got to seventh grade and I was in concert band and if I wanted to perform in
Chicago I had to make the symphonic band by eighth–grade. I practice so much in seventh grade
that eighth–grade came around I was the second chair in the symphonic band tuba section. I made it
through almost all of eighth grade year and made a lot of memories but, I still had one more to go,
Chicago. We were in Chicago walking from Sears tower to The Bean. It was awesome, all of the
buildings, the smells and all of the diversity in the city was astonishing. There was a man of
African–American ethnicity that approached us and asked if we would like to donate to the
homeless shelter that he lives in, I have him $5 and I felt really bad for him. We get to an art figure
and stood on pillars placed in front of it, and took pictures. Passing by the pizza place that we ate at
later on we were confronted by a group of christians caroling in the streets of Chicago, and we were
asked if we wanted to sing with them. We rejected the question and continued walking down the
street. Overall in four days I saw a diversity level way higher than I've ever seen in Alpena in eight

Geography Of Chicago Essay
This chapter identifies how geography happens to Black Chicagoans through social, political,
economic, and spatial apparatuses that are mapped into and onto the landscape of Chicago (Shabazz,
2015). Unearthing how these processes become spatialized reveals the ways that they are also
embedded in the memories and bodies of Black Chicagoans over various space–times. While my
focal point for this thesis is the Chicago that the Black house community experience–specifically
between 1972–1988–connecting the historical sociospatial linkages of Black geographies in Chicago
is paramount, particularly back to the arrival of the second wave of Southern Black migrants who
came to Chicago during the Great Migration .
I begin with the arrival of the second ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
When speaking with the Black house kids, I discovered that most were the direct descendants of
Black migrants that came to Chicago during the second wave between 1940–1970. Therefore, the
familial positioning of the second wave of Southern Black folk and their offspring facilitates the
sharing of firsthand accounts about the sociospatial histories of the Black American South and
previous memories of Black Chicago with younger generations like the Black house kids. The
reconceptualization of Blackness in "the where" of Chicago coupled with shifting social
infrastructures that alter the Black spatialities of the city form the basis of these sorts of exchanges.
These systems that are fixed into and onto Black Chicago were directly felt by the second wave and
their children. Consequently, these linkages of particular space–time knowledges and involvements
allow them to candidly disentangle the Black Chicago that the Black house kids encounter though
their own familiarities with living in and through the

Social Inequality In Chicago
In recent years and over the course of the past fifty year history dating back to the civil rights
movement of the 1960's, the city of Chicago has been a center stage for violence, protest, racial
clash, and inevitably segregation. Since the days that Martin Luther King Jr. led marches in some of
Chicago's most historic moments, the city's sizable black population has hardly witnessed an upturn
in their quest for equality. In fact, many studies have identified a pattern of poverty, violence, bias,
and pre–mature mortality. All of which have led to the systematic oppression of an entire population
in one of the nation's largest cities. As a result, over the course of the past fifty years in Chicago,
poverty has expanded, neighborhoods have become ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In recent years the on–going clash between the Chicago Police Department and the city's black
youth have epitomized in the shooting of Laquan McDonald by a Chicago police officer seventeen
times. Since, the city has witnessed large and violent protests and further endured racial out lashes
and anti–police sentiment. As a baseline for understanding, this violence too is subject to only a few
Chicago neighborhoods mostly on the city's south and west sides where poverty is high and
opportunity is slim. Some startling statistics involving race and the Chicago police verified by
Chicago's police accountability task force has concluded that in Chicago, African–Americans are
shot nine times more than whites. In addition, blacks are stopped eight times more frequently than
any other race (Johnson, 2016). Further, according to the study almost 300 African–Americans were
shot by Chicago cops between 2008 and 2015, compared with 55 Hispanics and 13 whites. Since the
McDonald shooting and the police scrutiny that has followed, violence in Chicago have risen
astronautically in the year 2016 to date with 1,587 shot and 270 dead in only six

Property Values and Taxes
The area has highly been affected by the raising taxes and other property values. The homeowners
have had difficulties in buying and living in these houses because of the increased taxes. This is
because the property values have gone high due to the demand causing increase in taxes. This rise is
usually extended to the tenants by the landlords and they find themselves vacating the houses due to
high rents. The landlords might sometimes be unable to pay the tax leading to a sell of the houses.
Zoning
This is when both land use and the building density gets regulate by the local government. This has
attracted developers because most of the zones have been marked as under developed. Research
shows that over 300 single families are in the under developed zones. This means that the
developers can buy these single homes and build storey's that will accommodate many families

included both John Kander and Fred Ebb later known as Kander and Ebb. Kander was born on
March 18, 1927 in Kansas City, Missouri. His exposure to music began at an early age as a result of
having had tuberculosis as a baby. During this time, Kander was cut off and not allowed to be
around other people, that separation developed his ability for sound. Kander started piano lessons at
the age of six. His parents and brother would often spend evenings playing the piano and singing.

The show was Velma's and her sister's act before Velma killed her sister. Roxie turns Velma down
only then to find out that someone else had committed a crime. Roxie's only chance at fame again
was to pretend to faint and to pretend that she is pregnant, thus concluding Act 1. ("Full Script
Lyrics")
The symbolism in the first act shows how corrupt Chicago law enforcement can be and how easily
the media can be persuaded by giving lies to the public. The play is trying to tell the reader that in
this time of day, the media and the common people are so easily brainwashed by current events that
the media will praise criminals, this even happens in the media today.
Act 2 starts with Amos finding out about Roxie's pregnancy, but while he is calling out for attention
to let everyone know that he is the dad, no one notices him like he is invisible. After Roxie returns
back to prison with all of the attention on her, she has a huge argument with Billy because Roxie
thinks that she is calling all the shots now because she came up with the idea of being pregnant to
get her back on the publicity train. Roxie then fires Billy thinking she can do everything on her own,
later to realize that a woman was executed without a lawyer. Roxie then freaks out and calls Billy to
have him be her lawyer again. When the trial date comes, Billy tells Roxie that if she puts on a show
she will be fine. During court Roxie acts innocent while Billy does all the talking. The judge

The Urban Setting Of Chicago
Chicago, Illinois is home of the Cubs, Oprah and most notably it has a skyline filled with amazing
skyscrapers. It was in this city that stone masonry, due to its tendency to be very heavy and needing
a strong foundation and also its low tensile strength, was enthusiastically replaced by the steel
skeleton of the world's first skyscraper, the Home Insurance Building. This American city currently
boasts of another feat, the world's tallest building designed by a woman. Jeanne Gang designed the
mixed–use high–rise, Aqua Tower (fig.1) for the urban setting of Chicago. Aqua Tower is the
greenest and most appealing skyscraper in a place that has inspired some of the country's greatest
architecture. By using digital tools, Gang has fused traditional methods of building with an organic
and sculptural façade that a few years ago would not have been achievable. As the daughter of a
civil engineer, Gang developed an affinity for materials, buildings and the landscapes around them
by watching her dad trace roads and bridges through rural Illinois and taking road trips to landmarks
across the country. Gang confesses that her imagination is stimulated by things and elements from
those childhood trips and they have found their way into her work, especially Aqua Tower. Upon
graduating from the University of Illinois at Urbana–Champaign and the Harvard Graduate School
of Design, she worked in Europe and then returned to Illinois and worked at Booth Hansen before

Homeless In Chicago Essay
The U.S. government, middle, and upper–class citizens in the United States should come together
and fund communities in large cities like Chicago in the next couple years to lower the amount of
homeless people living on the city streets. In these communities they can build schools for those
with children so they can learn while their parents work and build income. As well as providing two
to three community hot meals for the families to eat. They can even build facilities where the
homeless who struggle with addictions live and receive treatment such as counseling and

to work and build their finance. The community could even give them jobs to work that way they

only will have places to live and food to eat, but easy access to the classroom close to home. The
Plos medicine editors states " But charities such as Crisis and Shelter are already warning that the
risk of homelessness for many people is closer than we have previously assumed and now more than
ever, homeless people can no longer be considered outside of society. Political will at the highest
level is needed to put them back into the mainstream political and therefore health and social

Research Paper
Chicago has a history steeped in growth of infrastructure, devastating natural disasters, and
everything in between. It first was settled in the late 1700's and has been growing exponentially ever
since. It's a city of commerce and opportunity for many incoming immigrants and settlers to start a
fresh life. This place became one of the most desirable cities in America to live and became the new
home for many people from the south, including African Americans. Many European immigrants
also tagged along with these black people coming from the southern states and made Chicago very
culturally diverse over time. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Negro residents were often molested by whites and some whites ended up even putting warning
signs in the neighborhoods with pictures of skulls, crossbones, and coffins. It was a long process for
many urban whites, European immigrants, and blacks to coexist. However, it was such a unique
situation that Chicago had never seen before, thus making this city one of the most fascinating and
diverse group of cultures in America. The state of Illinois has had some of the most recognized and
respected Democratic politicians in American history. In 1955, Richard J. Daley became mayor until
his death in 1976. According to author Adam Cohen, he was the most powerful local politician
America has ever produced. Under his reign, the city's black population was reaching record levels,
as trainloads of blacks fled their hard lives in the rural south for the promise of a better life in
northern cities. It was pretty clear that Chicago under Daley became America's major northern rights
battleground. At the time of Daley's inauguration in 1955, Chicago was spiraling downward.
According to Cohen, Chicago's 1950 population of 3,620,962 turned out to be the high–water mark
meaning the city would steadily lose inhabitants. Chicago was losing not only people, but jobs, to
the rapidly growing Cook County suburbs. Before Daley's time as mayor, the city lost 53,209
manufacturing jobs, while the rest of the country

I was looking for a real life example of someone that found a way to work through an impossible

I've never really been to Chicago, that stuck thing was a metaphor, but when I think of Chicago I

why, but in my head Chicago is a meaty place.1

and rhythms of jazz happened in Chicago and I hear that in its name.2

He was focused on how to handle all of the...yuck that living in a town with a million people,
thousands of horses, and acres of slaughter houses creates. Most big "modern" cities of the 19th
century10 let all that nasty flow into the gutter and sewer system. Sewers are buried deep
underneath the cities they serve. They are complex tunnels that lead the waste water away from the
populated areas and then spill it out into a river or something.
That plan was not going to work in the City of Broad Shoulders,11 for two and a half reasons; One,
the ground is very flat so the waste doesn't flow anywhere is just puddles. Two, the ground Chicago
is built on is a clay that does not absorb water. And (half) it was ground really difficult to dig

Simpson's murder trial and the Lewinsky scandal; such scandals build the framework for audiences
to enjoy Chicago as a critique of America's penal system in relation to fame. The main scandal in the
movie starts as Roxie shots her lover after discovering that he had lied to her about working to
further her singing career. Velma eliminates her husband and sister after finding them together in
bed. Billy Flynn, a slick lawyer who has never lost a case represents both women. His approach is to
set up his clients as media darlings, then use that exposure to swing the trial in their favor. "In
this town, murder's a form of entertainment," he comments. He refers to courtrooms as
"three ring circuses" and assures Roxie that justice can be blinded by the "razzle
dazzle" he will employ. Aside from sheer entertainment, the plot in Chicago also provides a
social critique for the criminal justice system and celebrity "status quo". It shines a light on matters
like murder, justice, and Hollywood. After watching the movie, the audience can expect to be left
feeling like a great musical orgy has just taken place in front of their eyes and with something more
meaningful to think about, the social critique of America.

images are clearly a reference to the roaring twenties setting of the movie. The red text conveys the

examples of this include "Cell Block Tango" and "Razzle Dazzle" these numbers specifically show
how sexy and edgy the movie can be. This also fits into the time period as the roaring twenties and
the vaudeville era are considered to be more liberal than preceding decades and then the great
depression era. This film has a very specific image and it uses music, costumes, and the setting to

The History Of Gangs In Chicago
Gangs in Chicago go hand and hand because of the rich history this topic has to offer. Coincidence?
One may think not. In the time of famous mobster, Al Capone, gangs in Chicago were just evolving
but did not live up to the names they have today. This includes their literal name, "gangs" , and the
reputation they have today. However, groups similar to these of today have been around since the
beginning of time, and not until after Al Capone did these groups get their name of "gang(s)".
Before they were just known as "mobs". These sort of "gangs" were groups that had similar
interests, backgrounds and goals they had in common. However, there is a difference between them
then and now, but there are similar characteristics as well. The makeup of gangs today seem to have
the same consistent patterns in terms of people who join, how they join, and where they join. ...

have reasons as to why they are so negative. It is the people who join, that make gangs so
threatening. Men and women who join are trying to get away or rebel from someone or something.
They may feel that joining a gang will give them the security of a "family". Those who join are so

Public Art In Chicago
Public forms of art have had a long–standing cultural and political effect on the citizens and history
of Chicago. With the growing recognition and notoriety of Chicago on a global scale, the desire for
tourists to visit the public art instalments as well as flock to each of Chicago's cultural
neighborhoods has increased. Areas like Pilsen, Chinatown and Bridgeport are now seen as
destinations for tourists to experience authentic microcosms of other cultures that make up the
greater Chicago metropolitan area. For large metropolitan areas, the need to create revenue is always

Public art and the ability to express oneself through any medium such as murals, sculpture, body art
and tattoos, and fashion are all things protected under the First Amendment protecting citizens rights
to Free Speech, Free Press and Freedom of Expression. The act of attempting to copyright and place
a fee on certain aspects of a city's culture and community encroaches on those rights. According to
the artist behind the Bean, Anish Kapoor, "his work allows people to see Chicago's version of itself"
highlighting the importance of public art as a way for people to view a city's vision of itself (Smith,
D). One of the beauties of public art, such as the Bean or Murals in neighborhoods like Pilsen, is
that they are open to everyone. No one needs to pay to see them or go to a museum, which comes
with societal expectations. Once a city starts to act as a business, protecting their assets and looking
for revenue wherever possible, the aspect of street art and public works as spontaneous and
indicative of the culture in which the art is located becomes a commercial item meant for a profit. If
the City of Chicago could justify placing a fee on photographs of the Bean as protecting the artist
from unauthorized photos, how would one draw the line on the city placing fees on other popular
works in the city such as the Picasso Sculpture at Daley Plaza or the famous murals of historic
events in Latino culture. While many neighborhoods have taken to protecting and preserving their
own culture and art, allowing a city to take ownership and privatize aspects of the city's culture
becomes a slippery slope in which there is no clear point at which they

Bringing Chicago to Life
Carl Sandburg describes Chicago as a tough and hefty city. Chicago is portrayed as a proud city, a
city proud to be so "strong and cunning" whereas other cities of the time were not. Chicago is
characterized by the people and workers who live in it. Sandburg loves Chicago even though it is a
brutally tough city. Sandburg uses imagery, personification, and punctuation to characterize the city
as an actual person.
Sandburg uses imagery that gives Chicago the reputation of being wicked, crooked, and brutal. The
author gives references of when people have called the city such names. Sandburg says, "And they
tell me you are crooked and I answer: Yes, it is true I have seen/ the gunman kill and go free to kill
again," (line 8–9). Not only did Sandburg write this line to give an example of one of the things
people call his city but he is also saying yes I have seen it happen, Chicago can be dangerous.
Despite what people say about his city he still describes it as proud. Sandburg sneers, "Come and
show me another city with lifted head singing so proud to be/ alive and coarse and strong and
cunning," (14–15). Sandburg defends his city while some people think it is cruel and harsh he
describes Chicago as proud of those characteristics. Sandburg portrays Chicago as wicked, crooked,
and brutal, but takes pride in living in a city that is so tough.
Sandburg uses personification to describe Chicago as an actual living person. The author
characterizes Chicago as various types of workers.

Chicago Outfit Vs Chicago Outfit
Fundamentally, to have a better and clear understanding of the Chicago Outfit, Dr. Johnson, Wayne,
"THE CHICAGO MOB VS. CHICAGO STREET GANGS" He explained the basic foundation of
Chicago Outfit,
"The Chicago Outfit is just that, traditional organized crime. It is not the Mafia; it has always been
very diverse and operates under the principals of Southern Italian organized crime.Until the late
1950s, it was considered a local problem with little federal intervention. Prohibition turned it into a
very profitable and well–run organization but reform movements of the 1920s caused protection
agreements to break down, leading to open warfare on the streets of Chicago. Again, we see that as
the Mobs changed on the Chicago landscape, the murder rate changed. The Chicago Mobs were
responsible for 594 murders from 1920 to 1929. From 1930 to 1939, the Chicago Mobs were

Carl Sandburg Chicago
As massive as Chicago is, opportunity is frequent. But as massive as Chicago is, nothing can be
perfect. Carl Sandburg's "Chicago" helps one reading the poem understand what living in a big city
like Chicago is like, equally exciting as frightening. "Chicago" is a poem that captures what the
legendary city stands for, a polarizing residence that embodies what makes society both incredible
and disappointing. Take the line "They tell me you are wicked and I believe them, for I have seen
your painted women under the gas lamps luring the farm boys." (lines 6 & 7) This quote suggests
prostitution going on within Chicago. An illegal crime that could potentially destroy marriages and
families. Sandburg quotes in lines 8 & 9 "And they tell me you are crooked and I answer: Yes, it is
true I have seen the gunman kill and go free to kill again." These lines recommend that not only
murder occur in Chicago but that this crime could happen without any justice being done against it.

The History Of The Chicago School Of Architecture In Chicago
Chicago School of Architecture The origin of Chicago's extensive area of modern buildings was due
to a terrible accident (Sayre 1076). On October 18, 1871, Chicago's business district was in flames
due to a fire that started in a cow barn. This fire helped to provide an economic boost in the city. As
the city looked for architectural innovation, there were several factors that contributed to what is
known as the Chicago School of Architecture. First, there was a growing belief that since land was
expensive in the downtown area, buildings should be constructed higher (Sayre 1076). Thanks to the
invention of metal frame construction, buildings were able to achieve new heights that many
thought were necessary. Many people thought the low

As soon as the project of Chinatown Square started, another issue arose. That is, the lack of

able to go to school because of the CTU Strike that is currently in progress today (The Washington
Post). The issue between the Chicago Teachers Union and Chicago Public Schools has not been
solved yet due to disagreements about the income received. The Chicago Teachers Union has made
offers to school administrations; however, the responses were not in their favor. The union has been
in progress of agreeing on a contract "since November 2011, [and the strike that occurred at the
time] was the first to hit the Windy City in 25 years" (Liebelson). The issue must have erupted due
to a misconception or a realization of problems occurring. Chicago Teachers Union choosing to
strike does not affect charter schools since they are not a part of Chicago Public Schools. The issue
of school strikes can be fixed by increasing the budgets and providing useful resources to teachers in
order to improve the level of education.
The Chicago Teachers Union (CTU) Strike in 2012 affected every single Chicago Public School and
their Students in 2012. The strike affected about 600 public schools which is over 350, 000 students.

Poem Analysis: Chicago
The city of Chicago is well known for its urban setting and advanced industry that's centrally
located in the heart of the United States. For years, Chicago has been a passageway for goods and an
epicenter for commerce which feeds an intricate economy. Moreover, Chicago is a city filled with a
high degree of diversity. Chicago's diversity, both through class and culture, has been the forefront
for national movements advocating for labor and civil rights. In the collection of poems, Chicago
Poems, Carl Sandburg explores the many layers of Chicago, while sharing his own perceptions of
the city.

This description creates an image in the readers' minds of an industrial laborer during his lunch
break: it is nowhere near glamorous. Then, Sandburg juxtaposes the image of the worker to the
wealthy men and women passing by him on a train. The people on the train seem to be enjoying
themselves. Sandburg describes them, "eating steaks running with brown gravy,/ Strawberries and
cream, eclaires and coffee" (5–6). The difference between the meal the laborer is eating and the
myriad of food the wealthy people on the train are eating points out the blatant inequality in the city
of Chicago. Through vivid imagery and the connection between the railroad tracks and the train,
Sandburg illustrates the dynamic between the working class and the upper class. The upper class can
enjoy all the luxuries that Chicago has to offer, but it is the working class that provides these
luxuries. Sandburg emphasizes the laborers role, "...goes back to the second half of a ten–hour day's
work/ Keeping the road–bed so the roses and jonquils/ Shake hardly at all in the cut glass vases" (9–
12). In this poem, Sandburg stresses his perception of the working class as the structure of Chicago,
but he also expresses his views of the upper class as

There was so much movement going across the stage from all directions. The direction and
choreography is obviously felt to a greater extent in the musical. The movie used the Cell block
tango as a way of giving a back story to each of the women in the jail. In the movies, the audience
does not really have to move their eyes across the stage because what the director wants you to see
is in the middle of the screen. In the musical, the director will have actors on all corners of the stage
creating a whole picture. In the large dance numbers the audience looks at the stage as a whole.
Roxie does her solo and the spot light is only on her. Roxie is the center of attention and that is

Chicago Antiquated Process

  • 1. Chicago Antiquated Process 1. Overview With one of the largest city governments in the United States, the City of Chicago touches the lives of a lot of people. The city provides residents with services ranging from basic sanitation, health and human services to major public works projects and infrastructure. In 2013, the city decided it wanted to improve the way it does business and change the way it interacts with residents. The city needed a holistic way to bring its antiquated process and communications into the digital age. A great many of the city processes still operated on paper, with little or no cross–departmental integration. Combined antiquated process, the City of Chicago is a large organization with over 30 divisions. In many cases, city employees ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Utilizing Microsoft SharePoint Online features of Office 365, the city was able to automate and streamline a great number of business processes. In many areas, the city was still using a "paper process" to conduct business with residents and contractors. The antiquated processes are slow, expensive and prone to human error. The city wanted to improve not only its own efficiency, however overall customer service to the residents of Chicago. "Over the last decade, the consumer experience has changed," says Berman, (2016) "People are now used to doing their banking online at any hour and ordering products from the comfort of their home. They've also come to expect 24– hour service from their government, which challenges us to find different ways to tailor our services to them ". (2016) A great example of Office 365 enhanced process automation is with the Chicago Department of Finance. Until its move to Office 365, the City Department of Transportation paid all of its contractors through a paper process. The amount of overhead involved with the processing and storage of the paper documentation alone was staggering. Moving the workload to the cloud removed paper almost completely from the process; greatly improving speed and accuracy. "Each project's paperwork could fill up 50 boxes, creating a storage issue", says Mohammed Pakshir, Manager of Transportation. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 3. Chicago Case Study On May 1st, 1893, the political and economic elite of the city of Chicago spared no expense when they host the Columbian Exposition, which showcased the technological, economic, and social capabilities of the United States of America and the City of Chicago to the world (Hoyt, 2003). For the United States, this cultural, technological, and economic showcase was an example of the massive capabilities of the country that now rivaled–perhaps even surpassed the capabilities of Europe. For Chicago, the hope was to cement a change in its social and cultural appearance to the outside world. Although one of America's fastest growing cities–as well as one of the largest, Chicago was having immense struggles with its image as its impoverished and marginalized ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Fredrick Douglass famously criticized the fair for excluding African Americans. This exclusion, Douglass said, was an intentional attempt to delegitimize and degrade the economic intellect and capabilities of African American people. Douglass wrote that it was part of a broader determination to keep African Americans down (Douglass, 1893). This effort was largely unsuccessful as we see in the current time, but some merits can be given to the troubled past of the City of Chicago and exclusive events like this causing unmeasurable harm with the Black population within the city of Chicago, today, still experiences a large amount of social and economic ... • 7. Summer In Chicago Essay My Summer in Chicago I couldn't help but to feel anxious and excited. It was my first time being in such a vast city and I couldn't wait to explore it. The time was near the end of July, this is when my dad usually enjoys taking our summer vacations, primarily outside of our state to somewhere else new and exciting. That summer my dad decided to take a week long road trip and visit, Wisconsin Dells, Chicago, St. Louis, and Madison. When I had heard him say Chicago I had already imagined the tall buildings surrounding me, and taking a walk near Lake Michigan on the Navy Pier. Overall, I had felt joyful about the trip. He wanted to show my sisters and I all the adventures he did in Chicago when he was my age. To tell the truth, I was more excited to visit Chicago a little more since it was such an extensive city and I had wanted to visit there ever since I was younger. A few days before the trip, my dad, my sister Nina, and I, had done some research and added up the cost of the trip and looked for hotels and restaurants to visit during the time we were there and on our road trip. After about an hour of research on Chicago, we had our plan of what to do for our time in Chicago. That night, It was difficult to fall asleep, although I wasn't surprised I usually didn't fall asleep right away before a vacation, I'm usually too excited. Morning soon came and my dad, my younger sister Niomi, my sister Nina, and I were all ready to leave and finally begin the drive to ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 9. Chicago During The World's Fair, Chicago AMERICA IN THE WORLD (GLOBAL CONTEXT) 1. "The White City had drawn men and protected them; the Black City now welcomed them back, on the eye of winter, with filth, starvation, and violence" (pg 323). During the World's Fair, Chicago was a truly wonderful place. At first, all the people were distracted by the actual fair, but after everyone had dispersed, the White City returned to the Black City it normally was. All of the success that the head architects and Chicago's people believed the fair had achieved didn't leave a lasting imprint on the city. The fair ended, the magic faded, and The Black City swallowed the White City whole. 2. "Too many features of the fair remained unfinished, Burnham acknowledged. He and his brigade of architects, draftsmen, engineers, and contractors had accomplished so much in an impossibly short time, but apparently not enough to overcome the damping effect of the fast–degrading economy." (Page 240). The fair had a set opening day but somehow everything was still not completely finished. It was a huge feat and even what they did accomplish was amazing, but it doesn't make sense to open to an unfinished fair. The poor economy certainly doesn't help matters, but people wouldn't necessarily want to spend money at a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... "Chicago has disappointed her enemies and astonished the world." (310) These quotes, along with many others, show how truly "magical" the Chicago World's Fair actually was. The nightlife was especially extravagant with special shows and attractions that citizens would never be able to see otherwise. As for the quote on page 310, Chicago really did astonish the whole world. The fair was made specifically to show New York who was really boss all while proving to the world that Chicago could create a fair so well put together that it would shame the Paris fair attendance record out of the ballpark by at least 300,000 visitors for one day. • 11. Words To Describe Chicago Dangerous, chaotic, gun violence, murder rate, and "Chirac" are all words used by various amounts of people on twitter, when asked to describe Chicago using one word or phrase. If I were to describe the city of Chicago, I would simply say: complex, diverse, misunderstood, windy, and lastly beautiful. Many people who view Chicago as a bad city, because of all the crime and murder rate, which is why people refer to Chicago as "Chirac". Being born and raised in Chicago, I can tell you that Chicago is a much better city than most people view it as. This windy city, specifically downtown Chicago loop, is such a beautiful place to visit in the summer and has special meaning to me. In order to get to the downtown Chicago loop, you can take the train. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This beach is known to be one of the most popular beaches in the downtown Chicago loop area and is always packed with tons of people in the summer. People are always looking for ways to avoid thinking about the sun, and North Avenue beach is the perfect place to be to avoid your thoughts on the extremely hot weather. I love to feel my feet soak into the soft, warm sand. There are volleyball nets set up in the sand, so I always make sure I have a ball to play. I can play volleyball for hours on the sand, although when I finish, my wrists are as red as tomatoes. After I play volleyball, I prepare myself to get in the water. The water is always cold of course. But, on a hot and humid day, the temperature of the water just right for me. There is also has a beach house shaped like a boat, where you can go in and put your belongings in lockers or use the washroom. There are more activities to do at North Avenue Beach other than playing volleyball and swimming. You can tan, people watch, rent bikes to ride, rent jet skis or kayaks, or grab a snack from the concessions stands that people set up. Many people rent bikes to ride them down lake shore drive. On the other hand, many people also go to North Avenue beach just to buy food. I love to buy funnel cakes. I always get a funnel cake with extra vanilla ice cream, topped with chocolate fudge and ... • 13. Diversity In Chicago Since the six grade I always wanted to travel to Chicago for band. So I joined a band I had an extremely fun Time. I got to seventh grade and I was in concert band and if I wanted to perform in Chicago I had to make the symphonic band by eighth–grade. I practice so much in seventh grade that eighth–grade came around I was the second chair in the symphonic band tuba section. I made it through almost all of eighth grade year and made a lot of memories but, I still had one more to go, Chicago. We were in Chicago walking from Sears tower to The Bean. It was awesome, all of the buildings, the smells and all of the diversity in the city was astonishing. There was a man of African–American ethnicity that approached us and asked if we would like to donate to the homeless shelter that he lives in, I have him $5 and I felt really bad for him. We get to an art figure and stood on pillars placed in front of it, and took pictures. Passing by the pizza place that we ate at later on we were confronted by a group of christians caroling in the streets of Chicago, and we were asked if we wanted to sing with them. We rejected the question and continued walking down the street. Overall in four days I saw a diversity level way higher than I've ever seen in Alpena in eight years. ... • 15. Geography Of Chicago Essay This chapter identifies how geography happens to Black Chicagoans through social, political, economic, and spatial apparatuses that are mapped into and onto the landscape of Chicago (Shabazz, 2015). Unearthing how these processes become spatialized reveals the ways that they are also embedded in the memories and bodies of Black Chicagoans over various space–times. While my focal point for this thesis is the Chicago that the Black house community experience–specifically between 1972–1988–connecting the historical sociospatial linkages of Black geographies in Chicago is paramount, particularly back to the arrival of the second wave of Southern Black migrants who came to Chicago during the Great Migration . I begin with the arrival of the second ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... When speaking with the Black house kids, I discovered that most were the direct descendants of Black migrants that came to Chicago during the second wave between 1940–1970. Therefore, the familial positioning of the second wave of Southern Black folk and their offspring facilitates the sharing of firsthand accounts about the sociospatial histories of the Black American South and previous memories of Black Chicago with younger generations like the Black house kids. The reconceptualization of Blackness in "the where" of Chicago coupled with shifting social infrastructures that alter the Black spatialities of the city form the basis of these sorts of exchanges. These systems that are fixed into and onto Black Chicago were directly felt by the second wave and their children. Consequently, these linkages of particular space–time knowledges and involvements allow them to candidly disentangle the Black Chicago that the Black house kids encounter though their own familiarities with living in and through the ... • 17. Social Inequality In Chicago In recent years and over the course of the past fifty year history dating back to the civil rights movement of the 1960's, the city of Chicago has been a center stage for violence, protest, racial clash, and inevitably segregation. Since the days that Martin Luther King Jr. led marches in some of Chicago's most historic moments, the city's sizable black population has hardly witnessed an upturn in their quest for equality. The Pilsen Alliance, a waged people's organization created in 1998, coupled with city geography classes at DePaul University to carry out a building list of Pilsen in order to spot and coordinate around issues connected to gentrification. Â What are trends that you have identified that are affecting this block? Property Values and Taxes The area has highly been affected by the raising taxes and other property values. The homeowners have had difficulties in buying and living in these houses because of the increased taxes. This is because the property values have gone high due to the demand causing increase in taxes. This rise is usually extended to the tenants by the landlords and they find themselves vacating the houses due to high rents. The landlords might sometimes be unable to pay the tax leading to a sell of the houses. Zoning This is when both land use and the building density gets regulate by the local government. ("Full Script Lyrics") The symbolism in the first act shows how corrupt Chicago law enforcement can be and how easily the media can be persuaded by giving lies to the public. The play is trying to tell the reader that in this time of day, the media and the common people are so easily brainwashed by current events that the media will praise criminals, this even happens in the media today. Act 2 starts with Amos finding out about Roxie's pregnancy, but while he is calling out for attention to let everyone know that he is the dad, no one notices him like he is invisible. After Roxie returns back to prison with all of the attention on her, she has a huge argument with Billy because Roxie thinks that she is calling all the shots now because she came up with the idea of being pregnant to get her back on the publicity train. Roxie then fires Billy thinking she can do everything on her own, later to realize that a woman was executed without a lawyer. Roxie then freaks out and calls Billy to have him be her lawyer again. It was in this city that stone masonry, due to its tendency to be very heavy and needing a strong foundation and also its low tensile strength, was enthusiastically replaced by the steel skeleton of the world's first skyscraper, the Home Insurance Building. This American city currently boasts of another feat, the world's tallest building designed by a woman. Jeanne Gang designed the mixed–use high–rise, Aqua Tower (fig.1) for the urban setting of Chicago. Aqua Tower is the greenest and most appealing skyscraper in a place that has inspired some of the country's greatest architecture. By using digital tools, Gang has fused traditional methods of building with an organic and sculptural façade that a few years ago would not have been achievable. As the daughter of a civil engineer, Gang developed an affinity for materials, buildings and the landscapes around them by watching her dad trace roads and bridges through rural Illinois and taking road trips to landmarks across the country. Gang confesses that her imagination is stimulated by things and elements from those childhood trips and they have found their way into her work, especially Aqua Tower. Upon graduating from the University of Illinois at Urbana–Champaign and the Harvard Graduate School of Design, she worked in Europe and then returned to Illinois and worked at Booth Hansen before setting up her own firm, ... The state of Illinois has had some of the most recognized and respected Democratic politicians in American history. In 1955, Richard J. Daley became mayor until his death in 1976. According to author Adam Cohen, he was the most powerful local politician America has ever produced. Under his reign, the city's black population was reaching record levels, as trainloads of blacks fled their hard lives in the rural south for the promise of a better life in northern cities. It was pretty clear that Chicago under Daley became America's major northern rights battleground. At the time of Daley's inauguration in 1955, Chicago was spiraling downward. According to Cohen, Chicago's 1950 population of 3,620,962 turned out to be the high–water mark meaning the city would steadily lose inhabitants. Chicago was losing not only people, but jobs, to the rapidly growing Cook County suburbs. Before Daley's time as mayor, the city lost 53,209 manufacturing jobs, while the rest of the country ... According to the artist behind the Bean, Anish Kapoor, "his work allows people to see Chicago's version of itself" highlighting the importance of public art as a way for people to view a city's vision of itself (Smith, D). One of the beauties of public art, such as the Bean or Murals in neighborhoods like Pilsen, is that they are open to everyone. Not only did Sandburg write this line to give an example of one of the things people call his city but he is also saying yes I have seen it happen, Chicago can be dangerous. Despite what people say about his city he still describes it as proud. Sandburg sneers, "Come and show me another city with lifted head singing so proud to be/ alive and coarse and strong and cunning," (14–15). Sandburg defends his city while some people think it is cruel and harsh he describes Chicago as proud of those characteristics. • 56. Chicago Outfit Vs Chicago Outfit Fundamentally, to have a better and clear understanding of the Chicago Outfit, Dr. Johnson, Wayne, "THE CHICAGO MOB VS. CHICAGO STREET GANGS" He explained the basic foundation of Chicago Outfit, "The Chicago Outfit is just that, traditional organized crime. It is not the Mafia; it has always been very diverse and operates under the principals of Southern Italian organized crime.Until the late 1950s, it was considered a local problem with little federal intervention. Prohibition turned it into a very profitable and well–run organization but reform movements of the 1920s caused protection agreements to break down, leading to open warfare on the streets of Chicago. Again, we see that as the Mobs changed on the Chicago landscape, the murder rate changed. The Chicago Mobs were responsible for 594 murders from 1920 to 1929. From 1930 to 1939, the Chicago Mobs were responsible for 325 murders." (Dr. Johnson, Wayne) Mobs are a very organized group and establishment. Mostly Mob doesn't sell drugs or do drugs, but they mostly bootleg(Illegal Alcohol) or steal clothes from trucks and sell them. Also, the Mobs didn't really like the laws and rule that the Government made for people. The Mobs wanted a more self– reliable Government to themselves. Mobs in mafia work in a very similar structure by creating A family structure. What I mean by structure I mean by class, organization and the rules. • 66. Carl Sandburg Chicago As massive as Chicago is, opportunity is frequent. But as massive as Chicago is, nothing can be perfect. Carl Sandburg's "Chicago" helps one reading the poem understand what living in a big city like Chicago is like, equally exciting as frightening. "Chicago" is a poem that captures what the legendary city stands for, a polarizing residence that embodies what makes society both incredible and disappointing. Take the line "They tell me you are wicked and I believe them, for I have seen your painted women under the gas lamps luring the farm boys." (lines 6 & 7) This quote suggests prostitution going on within Chicago. An illegal crime that could potentially destroy marriages and families. Sandburg quotes in lines 8 & 9 "And they tell me you are crooked and I answer: Yes, it is true I have seen the gunman kill and go free to kill again." These lines recommend that not only murder occur in Chicago but that this crime could happen without any justice being done against it. On October 18, 1871, Chicago's business district was in flames due to a fire that started in a cow barn. This fire helped to provide an economic boost in the city. As the city looked for architectural innovation, there were several factors that contributed to what is known as the Chicago School of Architecture. First, there was a growing belief that since land was expensive in the downtown area, buildings should be constructed higher (Sayre 1076). These could be looking for a better life, having a better job, running away from political issues. Chinese suffered a lot more obstacles and discriminations because they are relatively small and easy to be targeted on. One of the reasons was the city development and extension of the McCormick Place impacted on the planning design of the square as well as the transportation service availability. The other reason was because of environmental issue. The Chinatown Square was detected with toxins, which cost $400,000 and a long period of time to cleanup. Even though the Chinatown Square went through a lot of difficulties, the city of Chicago showed their support of the project by contributing $7.2 million and offered to build needed streets, sewers and sidewalks. (Chicago–Chinatown, 1996)1 As soon as the project of Chinatown Square started, another issue arose. That is, the lack of coordination of the present business restaurants owners. Chinatown had been heavily depended on restaurants business, which the owners competed by offering lower prices to attract customers. As a result, it was hard to convince these businessmen to compromise and coordinated with the project of Chinatown Square. The Chicago Teachers Union And Chicago Public Schools Georgis, Donnell, Mike, Moose For the second time in almost 4 years, over 350,000 Chicago Public School Students may not be able to go to school because of the CTU Strike that is currently in progress today (The Washington Post). The issue between the Chicago Teachers Union and Chicago Public Schools has not been solved yet due to disagreements about the income received. The Chicago Teachers Union has made offers to school administrations; however, the responses were not in their favor. The union has been in progress of agreeing on a contract "since November 2011, [and the strike that occurred at the time] was the first to hit the Windy City in 25 years" (Liebelson). The issue must have erupted due to a misconception or a realization of problems occurring. Chicago Teachers Union choosing to strike does not affect charter schools since they are not a part of Chicago Public Schools. The issue of school strikes can be fixed by increasing the budgets and providing useful resources to teachers in order to improve the level of education. The Chicago Teachers Union (CTU) Strike in 2012 affected every single Chicago Public School and their Students in 2012. The strike affected about 600 public schools which is over 350, 000 students. The CTU began negotiating their contract with CPS in November of 2011, but their demands were not met. Since the negotiating did not solve the issue, the Chicago Teachers Union chose to organize a strike for the first time in Chicago in 25 years. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Chicago's diversity, both through class and culture, has been the forefront for national movements advocating for labor and civil rights. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This description creates an image in the readers' minds of an industrial laborer during his lunch break: it is nowhere near glamorous. Then, Sandburg juxtaposes the image of the worker to the wealthy men and women passing by him on a train. The people on the train seem to be enjoying themselves. Sandburg describes them, "eating steaks running with brown gravy,/ Strawberries and cream, eclaires and coffee" (5–6). The difference between the meal the laborer is eating and the myriad of food the wealthy people on the train are eating points out the blatant inequality in the city of Chicago. Through vivid imagery and the connection between the railroad tracks and the train, Sandburg illustrates the dynamic between the working class and the upper class. The upper class can enjoy all the luxuries that Chicago has to offer, but it is the working class that provides these luxuries. Sandburg emphasizes the laborers role, "...goes back to the second half of a ten–hour day's work/ Keeping the road–bed so the roses and jonquils/ Shake hardly at all in the cut glass vases" (9– 12). In this poem, Sandburg stresses his perception of the working class as the structure of Chicago, but he also expresses his views of the upper class as ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
