3. Meaning PPC
• PPC is a technique of forecasting ahead, every
step in the long process of production, taking
them at the right time, in the right degree, while
trying to complete the operations at maximum
efficiency
• Industrial operations involve four considerations
namely, what work shall be done, how the work
shall be done and when the work shall be done.
4. Objectives
• To deliver quality goods
• Optimal utilization of resources
• To maintain optimum inventory
• Flexibility in operations
• Achieve coordination and communication
• Predict and forecast future requirements
5. Role of PPC
• Product design
• Equipment selection and replacement
• Job design and Process design
• Labor skills and training programs
• Raw material selection and sub
contracting
• Implementing and controlling the schedule
6. Scope of PPC
• Materials & methods
• Machines & equipments
• Manpower & routing
• Routing, estimating, scheduling and
loading
• Inspection and evaluation
• Dispatching and cost control.
7. Production planning functions
• Estimating: Deciding on the quantity of products to
be manufactured. This is based on the sales
forecast.
• Routing: Process which decides the sequence of
operations to be undertaken.
• Scheduling: Involves fixing of priorities for each
jobs; indicating the start and end time of each
activity.
• Loading: is a machine loading chart prepared to
show the planned activity and utilization of men and
machinery.
8. Production control functions
• Dispatching: setting up of production activities
in motion by placing orders on vendors as per
the scheduled requirements
• Expedite/Follow up: these include, status
reporting, reviews and progress charts to ensure
timely completion of jobs.
9. Assess yourself
• Have you understood the role, objectives and
scope of production planning and control.
• Do you realize the importance of production
control functions.
• Have you any idea on capacity planning, not
discussed in these slides.
