1. OK GO Case Study
Are their videos mainly Performance, Narrativeor Conceptual?
Their first video ‘Here it goes’ is a combination of Performanceand
Conceptual. This is because their idea/concept is to perform on the treadmills.
The idea has then allowed them to basetheir whole performanceon the
treadmill and are able to stay in one location throughoutthe video without
actually being boring due to the variety of things being shown on the treadmill.
The second video ‘End love’ and the third video ‘A million ways’ areboth
performancevideos. This is because throughoutthe video they are dancing
and linking it to the lyrics in the song. They are also making surethat they are
in time with the music and everything is linking with one another. Both videos
also havesome lip sync in it which tells us as the audience that whatthey are
doing is based on the song.
The forth video ‘The writings on the wall’ and the fifth video ‘I won’tlet you
down’ are both once again very performancebased. As the band OK Go have
progressed over the years they have been able to add more location into their
videos rather than justbeing in their garden dancing. They have also been able
to use different technologies to help them create a moreinteresting feel to
their videos e.g. like the wheeley seats in the ‘I won’tlet you down’ video.
I feel that they chose to make their videos like this as they are all very similar in
the fact they can danceand sing so by doing this they were able to use
themselves in the video and make it as crazy as they like. They also very able to
do it cheaply as they didn’t useanyone else in the video or massivelocations
leaving them to do whatthey wanted in a small environment. Overtimethey
have been able to use bigger locations and add moreof a technical editing
aspect into the videos as in the ‘End Love’ video all their movements werefast
and small meaning they used softwareto do this after they had performed.
