2. Link between the lyrics and the
video
This convention shows that there is a link between the
lyrics of the song and what you are being shown in the
video its self. For example in Eminem's song Stan you
see Stan talking in a tape recorder what is being sung
in the lyrics so the is a like between the two.
3. Thought Beats
This is when the
camera and how the
music video is shown
usually follow the beat
of the song so the
audience can easily
identify the structure
of the verse or chorus.
4. Genre-related style
A lot of artists tend to
repeat them selves
doing certain action or
involve certain aspects
(like a trademark) in
there video to make it
recognisable to there
audience. For example
Aphex twins face is like
a trademark in his
video because it is used
a lot in his videos.
5. Star image and voyeurism
Many music company's
use close up on there
artist to make a ‘star
image’ that promotes the
artist and the song. With
female artist they you
close up to voyeuristically
view the women bringing
in Mulveys male gaze
theory.
6. Intertextual references
This is when a video or the lyrics like or refer to
something in another part of the media like the
news for example. Aphex twin is also very good
at this because his video ‘come to daddy’ relates
to when the media was talking about the rise in
chavs so his video showed you that it was stupid
to be scared of something that isn't dangerous.
7. Narrative
This is that the song its self should become a
story that need to be told by the artist and avoid
being common. This is so the artist will become a
part in the story. Like Eminem's song ‘stan’ it is
him singing a story.
8. Technical aspects
Camera: This is camera angles, camera movement and
camera composition, this makes it so you can add a lot of
depth in to a music video.
Sound: This involves everything that you can hear like the
speed and pitch these can vary depending on what genre
you a listening to.
Mise-en-scene: This is the costume of the characters the
make-up and the location of the video to make the video
look more believable.
Editing: This is how the clips go with the music it can
completely change the feel of the song and the pace, it is
how you keep the audience interested in the song.
