The document discusses the effectiveness of combining a music video with ancillary texts like magazine ads and CD packaging. It analyzes the consistency between these products in their genre, conventions, technical elements, imagery, colors, and characters. Specifically, the music video and ancillaries maintain consistency through using the same dark mysterious color scheme, slow R&B genre, close-up camera shots, settings, and lone female character to create a cohesive abstract narrative and achieve synergy across the products. The only difficulty was ensuring everything flowed together correctly while maintaining consistency.

Question 2
1. LAURA SLATER
QUESTION 2: HOW EFFECTIVE IS
THE COMBINATION OF YOUR
MAIN PRODUCT AND
ANCILLARY TEXTS?
2. GENRE AND CONVENTIONS
The genre of my music video is slow
R’n’B. We have used conventions of an
R’n’B music video as well as including the
element of a slow and mysterious look. I
have achieved this in both my ancillaries
and my main product.
The conventions that I have used are the
props, such as the rose petals, lipstick
and the images of the girl shown
throughout.
We have used dark mysterious colours
throughout so that the genre of ‘mystery’
is shown throughout our video. this makes
the video more abstract and meets the
conventions of a conceptual music video.
3. TECHNICAL CODES- CAMERA SHOTS,
MISE EN SCENE, DESIGN LAYOUT.
Camera shots- I have used a variety of shots
throughout both my ancillaries and my main
product. One example is the close up shots. I
have used a close up shots of the models lips
putting on lipstick on the front of my magazine
advert as well as in the music video. This shows
that there is continuity between the images &
camera shots I have used for the ancillaries and
also the main product. Another example of a
camera shot used In my ancillaries and main
product is a panning shot of a chandelle
Mise en scene- The mise en scene is the same for my
ancillaries and my main product. I have been consistent with
the characters, props and setting. For example using the
house setting, shower and outside setting. I have done this so
that images I have used on my magazine advert and CD
digipack are the same as the ones in my video.
Design Layout- The design layout is quite simple, and plain.
This matches the video with quick short shots of different
images and shots and no long confusing clips. Everything
flows together nicely, as there is an abstract look to the video.
4. MAIN PRODUCT
Iconography- One thing that you could say is iconic of
this music video is the character used. As it is just one
girl throughout the video the target audience may be
able to relate to this and this is iconic of a music video.
Another thing that is iconic of this music video is the
props used throughout. For example petals, candles
and flames. All signify love and relationships and this
could be seen as iconic to this type of song.
Settings- I have used a range of different settings
throughout the music video. This is so that the
abstract image really comes through. Some
examples of some of the settings we will use,
church, swimming pool, shower, house & outside
setting.
Characters- There is only be one character
throughout. This will be a young girl. She is not be
shown fully throughout. This is to create a narrative
throughout the video. This is also in keeping with
the abstract look.
Props- The props I have used throughout are all different
but have some connection. For example I have used
flower petals, perfume & chandelle. We have tried to use
props that signify love and also mystery.
Editing/ Effects- We will use Adobe Premier to create
and edit our music video. In Adobe there are a lot of
techniques we could use to create the effect and look
we want. For example we will edit the colour and
change it to black and white so that the video matches
our colour scheme. As well as this I will be using cross
dissolves and bend modes so that the video flows
together properly, and looks professional. As well as this I
will be slowing some clips down so that it fits better with
the slower bits on the song and also reversing some clips
so that they are backwards to give it an edgy and
abstract look.
Camera- We will be using a wide variety of different
camera shots throughout the video. For example
close ups will be used a lot as we want to create an
abstract look to the video and do not want to
reveal too much about the characters so that the
video has a mysterious feel to it. As well as this we
will be using a lot of different camera movement.
For example panning shots, track in and out, zoom
in and out and tilt up and down. Using a variety of
shots will give the video a different look throughout.
5. SYNERGY
“The interaction or cooperation
of two or more organizations,
substances, or other agents to
produce a combined effect
greater than the sum of their
separate effects.”
6. IS THERE CONSISTENCY?
Imagery- We have used all the same
images throughout both of the
ancillaries and also the main music
video. We have done this so that the
advert and CD Digi pack is
recognisable from watching of the
music video.
Iconography- The character used is the same
throughout and this could be iconic as the target
audience may be able to appeal to just one girl. I
have used Images of the character in my ancillaries
and main product.
Colours- The colours used are Black &
White. This colour scheme is used
consistently throughout the music video
and therefore I used this colour scheme
throughout my ancillaries.
7. WHAT DIFFICULTIES HAVE YOU
EXPERIENCED IN GAINING SYNERGY
BETWEEN THE PRODUCT?
• The only difficulty in gaining synergy
between the products was making sure that
everything Is consistent and did flow
together correctly.
The images were easy to keep consistency
as we took images as we were filing
therefore the images were the same as the
video footage. This was a big advantage
that we had.
