Essay On Folk Art Of India
Folk Art
India had always been known as the land that portrayed cultural and traditional vibrancy through its
conventional arts and crafts. The 35 states and union territories sprawled across the country have
their own distinct cultural and traditional identities, and are displayed through various forms of art
prevalent there. Every region in India has its own style and pattern of art, which is known as folk art.
Other than folk art, there is yet another form of traditional art practiced by several tribes or rural
population, which is classified as tribal art. The folk and tribal arts of India are very ethnic and
simple, and yet colorful and vibrant enough to speak volumes about the country's rich heritage.
Folk art in India apparently has a great potential in the international market because of its traditional
aesthetic sensibility and authenticity. The rural folk paintings of India bear distinctive colorful
designs, which are treated with religious and mystical motifs. Some of the most famous folk
paintings of India are the Madhubani paintings of Bihar, Patachitra paintings from the state of
Odisha, the Nirmal paintings of Andhra Pradesh, and other such folk art forms. Folk art is however
not restricted only to paintings, but also stretches to other art forms such as pottery, home
decorations, ornaments, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
These are not just aesthetic objects but in fact have an important significance in people's lives and
are tied to their beliefs and rituals. The objects can range from sculpture, masks (used in rituals and
ceremonies), paintings, textiles, baskets, kitchen objects, arms and weapons, and the human body
itself (Tattoos and piercings). There is a deep symbolic meaning that is attached to not only the
objects themselves but also the materials and techniques used to produce

Commutated To American Folk Music
permutated to American Folk Music, in 1985 he said:
"The thing about rock'n'roll is that for me anyway it wasn't enough ... There were great catch–
phrases and driving pulse rhythms ... but the songs weren't serious or didn't reflect life in a realistic
way. I knew that when I got into folk music, it was more of a serious type of thing. The songs are
filled with more despair, more sadness, more triumph, more faith in the supernatural, much deeper
feelings" (Bob Dylan, 1985) In the pursuit of American Folk music, Bob travelled to New York City
in 1961, to perform and meet his musical idol Woody Guthrie, who was in hospital at the time,
seriously ill with Huntington's disease (His illness finally lead to his death in 1967).

The Folk Through Three Decades
This essay, by Sija Tsai, demonstrates in a historical chronology how the WFF (Winnipeg Folk
Festival) changed its suggested definition of the folk through three decades. She explored this topic
by exploring media coverage and administrator beliefs on the subject of the folklore presence at
these festivals.
The festival was inaugurated in 1974 and was originally designated to celebrate Winnipeg's
centenary. However, with its success, the festival because an annual celebration of folk. At its
beginnings, the WFF featured mostly Anglo North American and Irish "folk" singers. the musical
acts would feature "performances (often vocal) of traditional material (often ballads) and original
material (often highly politicized) by mostly young ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The outcome of the pluralization of the WFF performances had mixed reviews. Some participants
thought that the festival was betraying their folk value due to the implementation of more popular
and "world" artist and others argued that it was a good change and that it supported a diversity
acceptance narrative. The pluralization of performances in the WFF's continued through the 1980's
and 1990's. During the 1990's there was an apparent fusion of traditional and popular idioms which
further blurred the lines between its suggested binary. During the early 2000 there were questions
addressing the political issues of the program such as the apparent absence of aboriginal
performances.
In conclusion, the change in performance seen in the last three decades of the WFF shows that the
idea of the "folk" is tangible and is subject to change. One of the principle reason that its definition
changes is because of the underlying idea that folk music is music which features exoticism from the
"normal" repertoire which constitutes a Canadian identity. Therefore, while in the 1970, the English
ballads were considered different, as the performance frequency of the English ballads were
growing, its integration into the Canadian sound/music identity was being solidified. Hence, the
three decades of folk festival shows that this continuous search for the exotic and fusion is due in
part of a

The Souls Of Black Folk
W.E.B DuBois wrote the book titled The Souls of Black Folk in 1903 as a response to the condition
of black people in America. The book predates the 1920s Harlem Renaissance, but can be viewed as
a precursor to the New Negro Movement. Prior to 1903, blacks lived primarily in the South, but by
the 1920s the black population in New York City rose by 115 percent. The movement of blacks from
the South to the North occurred for various reasons; discontent with life in the Jim Crow South,
widespread violence against blacks and the opportunity for jobs in the North due to WWI. The Souls
of Black Folk is the written anthem for the Harlem Renaissance; the book voices the condition of
blacks in 1903 and aims to celebrate African–American culture, to strive for equality and break with
the philosophy of Booker T. Washington. DuBois was born in Massachusetts in 1868 and was
educated at prestigious institutions like Fisk and Harvard. DuBois was an intellectual black
Northerner who had had many opportunities, but was far removed from the condition of blacks in
the South. Yet his teaching positions at rural schools in Tennessee and Southern black colleges
would have given him an understanding of black life in the South and would have inspired him to
write The Souls of Black Folk. Through his experiences in the South, DuBois obtained a clearer
picture of where blacks stood in society. DuBois was part of the older generation of prominent
African Americans that became the inspiration for

Jewish Folk Dance As A Means Of Creating A New Israeli...
Jewish national identity was colonized when Jewish people were forced out of ancient Israel and
dispersed to various different nations. Anti–Semitism was one of the principle means for this
colonization because it made it dangerous for Jewish people to express their own national identity in
the European nations they dispersed to. As a result, certain traditions, like Jewish folk dance, which
were not codified, were lost. Jewish folk dance also disappeared because folk traditions are strongly
connected to the land in which they originated and the majority of Jews left Israel. Furthermore,
because of the third commandant of the Torah, Jews were not allowed to depict images of their
dance. Consequently, their traditional dance was lost forever. However, when the Jews returned to
Israel in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, they found it important to recreate traditions like folk
dance to reassert their fractured nationhood after so many years of diaspora. Thus, Israeli folk dance
was a means of creating a new Israeli culture.
Israeli folk dance was created by using elements from other dance cultures with themes and music
of modern Israel. In this paper, I will argue that while anti–Semitism resulted in the colonization of
Jewish national identity, women re–created Israeli folk dance as a means to establish a new Jewish
identity, as well as an identity for themselves. By focusing on Romania and Yemen, we will identify
the vestiges of colonialism in Israeli folk dance, and

American Folk Music Revival Of The 1960s
Harry Belafonte and the American Folk Music Revival of the 1960s The 1960s is considered to be
one of the worst decade in American and world history. The whole world was going through
adversities, with wars taking place in several countries, civil rights protests taking place in southern
states, and a president assassination taking place in Dallas, Texas. While the world was facing these
tragic, horrifying events, the music world was developing a new type of music genre: folk music.
Music artists from the American Folk Music Revival in the 1960s would improvise a song, while
trying to establish a way to deliver important messages to the people everywhere. The ballad "Day–
O" by Harry Belafonte, played a huge role in the American Folk Music Revival of the 1960s. The
American Folk Music Revival in the 1960s sparked an interest and fascinated many music loving
people around the world. The American Folk Music Revival is just like the title of its name–it is a
compilation of folk music. There were two different groups during the American Folk Music
Revival in the 1960s: the singer and songwriters who wrote their own lyrics to the melodies of
traditional music, and the singer and songwriters who stuck to the traditional songs and their styles,
popularizing Appalachia music, Cajun music, and other traditional styles (Ruehl 1). Many
songwriters such as Harry Belafonte, popularized the folk music genre and made themselves known
to everyone nationwide. The songs that they wrote

Huddie Ledbetter in 1933. It's been redone in the years since– most notably by The Weavers who
recorded their own version just one year after his death. It lasted over 25 weeks on the Billboard
Best Seller chart. With its popularity, most people are more familiar with the lyrics from The
Weavers than those from Ledbetter. The success of The Weaver's version of the song brought out

smoking marijuana as taking a "puff" on a joint or "draggin'" is the smoking itself. Both Lipton and
Yarrow reject the interpretation. Number 3 Sounds of Silence by Simon & Garfunkle

between the years of 1963 and 1964. It was eventually released in 1964, but didn't meet with much
success. The duo broke up after the failure, but the next year, it began to get play on radio stations
on the east coast of the U.S. The producer remixed the track and released it in 1965. The duo
reunited and released the song on their second album with the same name. It was added to the
National Recording Registry in the Library of Congress in 2013 as a historically and culturally
important song. Number 2 If I Had a Hammer by Pete Seeger

The Effects Of Folk Music On American History
Odetta After reading the articles about folk music as well as articles about the famous folk singer,
Odetta Holmes, I have learned that, folk music is music with lyrics that contain social issues,
economic issues, hardships as well as relationship difficulties. Folk music is traditionally played
with no more than a acoustic guitar or banjo. I have also learned that folk music has been around for
a very long time and is, perhaps, the very first genre of music that started all around the world. Folk
music is basically the roots of the particular society that it is being played and sang at. Folk music
has been around in many countries such as, Ireland, England, America, and many other European
Countries. Folk music significantly plays a huge part in U.S. history. Folk music is significant to
American history because, it discuses a vast amount of different problems and historical events that
have happened throughout U.S. history. An example of this is, singing about wars was a popular
topic, along with political issues, economic issues, labor issues, relationship issues, as well as many
others throughout the years of American history. These vast amount of topics and hardships in these
songs not only show how these people felt at the time, but can also show an actual timeline of events
that happened in U.S. history. I will be discussing one of these famous and important folk singers,
Odetta Holmes. I will be analyzing and discussing her life and success in her

this was a hindrance for musicians of colour that sought to create and sell their music. Berry Gordy

are still well known today such as Stevie Wonder, Marvin Gaye, and Aretha Franklin. For the first
time in history artists of colour not only had the freedom to record music but it was widely accepted
throughout America. Radio stations picked up the sounds of soul and R&B putting these artists on
the map both locally and nationally. The creation of Motown records may have unknowingly been

The Folk Music Of The Civil Rights Movement
Response Paper #4 The folk music of the Civil Rights Movement "came out of tradition, common
experience, and generations of resistance" (Dunaway 2010: 140). The songs used throughout the
movement derived from the shared experiences and struggles of African Americans while
connecting "the gentle, idealistic world of folk music and the integrationist world of civil rights"
(Dunaway 2010: 145). Songs, such as "We Shall Overcome", were put through the folk process,
where a song is passed on and alterations are made to verses (Dunaway 2010: 141). These folk
songs evolved to embody the movements they were used for: "Those songs came out of the
movement. The songs came out of very specific movements" (Dunaway 2010: 139). Folk music,
which can ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Due to the folk process, the style and performance of the song changed depending on where the
song was used and who was performing it: "We Shall Overcome" in Albany loosened way up with
lots of space for improvisations, lots of antiphony and answering and calling, and it stayed that way
in terms of the black movement in the South wherever it went after that. So Albany to a large extent
took all the music that had been done up to that point, and transformed it" (Dunaway 2010, 139–
140).
"We Shall Overcome" is a folk song because it "came out of tradition, common experience, and
generations of resistance" (Dunaway 2010: 140). The song's origins are unclear, but can be traced
back to a song that slaves had sung while working and old church songs that were never written
down until 1900. Additionally, the adaptability and flexibility of the song's structure can be found in
other folk songs during the Civil Rights Movement: "The evolution of "We Shall Overcome" from a
religious folk song to the anthem of the integration movement is a case study of folk process"
(Dunaway 2010, 141).
The commercialization of "We Shall Overcome" would have taken away all of the power that the
song possesses and its significance in the Civil Rights Movement. The beauty of folk music is its
freedom, not its marketability: "The music was neither academic nor commercial; it was not
generated simply to

Folk Music Revival In The 1930's
The folk music revival of the 1930's–60's was one of the most formative movements of the 20th
century. Led by the likes of Woody Guthrie and Burl Ives, the genre originally served the
revolutionary purpose of giving voice to those unsatisfied with the social conventions in which
society confined them. But it wasn't long before the movement transcended itself, the music gaining
traction in the 1950's when the leftist messages of folk music reached an audience beyond the scope
of the demographic for which it was originally intended, the movement's reputation shifting from a
leftist means of expression to a mainstream culture fad. Greenwich Village, an epicenter chosen for
its abundance of performances venues, was overrun by hootenannys and the

Long ago, at a minute village adjacent to Roc–A–Fella peaks, there lived three puerile boys.
Jermaine, Nas, and Kendrick. Kendrick was a scion of the lightning district of the village, Nas was
born and raised in the fire district, and Jermaine was a simple village boy who grew crops and raised
cattle. Ever since the village was established it was divided into four main groups. The fire district,
the lightning district, the village folk, and the All Mighty's. Mostly all lived in placidity until one
day. It was December and the day was arctic. The wind blew rapidly and incoherently as the village

If the snow does not elucidate in the next three days, the vigorous of the district will ambuscade the

Egil's Saga Essay
The author most likely intended for Egil's Saga to be a historical documentation of Scandinavia, its
culture, and several of its inhabitants. The tale could also be seen as a folk tale, set in a realistic
setting with real people, but the events are skewed and not quite right. The epic accomplishes the
first possible intention through its many characters, the use known locations, and basing the majority
of the tale around two individual families that would have been well known around the time it was
written. However, the tale is not entirely accurate, which strengthens the idea that it was more of a
folk tale. Throughout the epic the audience is introduced to two families, beginning far before the
birth of the man who would attributed to the title. The tale then follows these families through the
events that led up to the main plot of the epic, going so far as to keep detailed track of who married
who and where each character came from. An example of this would be the detailed description of

This was due to most people being unable to read. Only those with enough money could afford to

the story aloud in Icelandic to a crowd. With this in mind the story was most likely spread primarily
through word of mouth. This is also shown through the style in which the piece was written.
Egil's Saga is quick paced and exaggerated, like a folk tale version of a family story. This stylistic
choice would keep an audience tuned in to the story and unsure of when to walk away from it. Each

How Did Bob Dylan Affect The Creation Of Folk Music?
On July 25, 1965 at the Newport Music festival Ronnie Gilbert announced bob Dylan to the
audience "And here he is...take him, you know him, he's yours." Bob Dylan accompanied by
guitarist Al Kooper and The Paul Butterfield Blues Band, began to play "Maggie's Farm" in an
electrified form. The crowd also became electrified booing and yelling loud enough to drown the
sound of the Bob Dylan and all the musicians. The fans did not know that six weeks earlier, Bob
Dylan had recorded the classic hit "Like A Rolling Stone". The fans were upset, they were expecting
a Bob Dylan acoustic guitar performance, instead they were unknowing witnessing a rock and roll
historical event.
Bob Dylan musical roots are in rock and roll, he only began to write and folk music in college.
While attending the University of Minnesota, Bob Dylan played folk music in Coffee houses and
attracted a bohemian crowd that was trying make changes in american society. The uproar was that
his music was part of a movement and to change to a music genre that was mainstream and
commercial, and abandon his political folk music was devastating to the war and civil rights
movement. Some fans even tried to rename him Judas. Bob Dylan was no longer a folk artist, but a

American Folk Musicals In Quiara Alegría's In The Heights
According to Rick Altman, American folk musicals have essential components: idealized depiction
of 'America,' merge of past and present, depiction of the family, home, or community, and secondary
conflict between two groups. Likewise, the Broadway musical In the Heights depicts the pursuit of
"American dreams" and "home" as well. Therefore, audiences and readers start to question that if
Lin–Manuel Miranda and Quiara Alegría's In the Heights is a typical American folk musical that
Altman describes or not. Thus, I will use evidence of songs, plots, and lyrics from In the Heights to
prove that this musical piece partially fulfills Altman's definition of American folk musicals. "The
folk musical can not survive without a sense of community," Altman says, addressing the
importance of the role of community and family in American folk musicals (Altman 274). The first
song of the musical, which is called "In the Heights" as well, points out that all main characters
together in the scene form a community of "Latino." Among them, either their parents came from
Latino countries and had them in the U.S., or some of them came to America for an expected better

dancers from In the Heights are just like the characters in the musical, that none of them are
Americans. They are either mixed race or migrations. These dancers also feel isolated from the
public in their real life, and they desire to find a group that can give them a new identity and accept
them. Furthermore, the stories take place in a small bodega in Washington heights. This special

The Evolution of Folk Music Vocals
The Evolution of Folk Music Vocals
By its definition, folk music technically refers to indigenous forms of music created by local,
regional or native populations as a way of engaging in cultural expression. This means that at its
core, folk music is not intended to command a commercial value nor is it necessarily folk music by
definition once a form has been co–opted by an outside culture. However, this is also a definition for
folk which has long been rendered obsolete by the aesthetic and vocal qualities that listeners tend to
associate with the genre today. This is because the most historically significant instances in which
folk music converged with the commercial zeitgeist would come to produce a highly distinctive set
of sounds.
Indeed, when we think of folk music, one tends instantly to conjure image of a young Bob Dylan
with harmonica rack and guitar, wheezing his half–singing, half–speaking vocal style in Greenwich
Village. This iconic vision from the Folk Revival of the 1960s is probably the best bridge that we
have to folk influences like the socialist activists of the Almanac Singers and the Weavers, like Delta
country folk singers like Mississippi John Hurt or Josh White, or like bluegrass innovators such as
the Carter Family. Indeed, Nelson (2010) tells that figures such as "Woody Guthrie, Pete Seeger, and
John and Alan Lomax, made a huge impact on folk music in America, one which is still felt today. It
is likely that their joint efforts with each other and

Simon And Garfunkel: Folk Music Analysis
Simon and Garfunkel was a folk–rock duo that was a part of the 1960's folk revival. Their music
evokes certain elements from the folk tradition, including the use of the strophic form and certain
themes, such as family, love, and loss. These themes were very important to the folk tradition
because it was the reason and rhyme behind these songs. As a short example, the song called, The
Boxer, released in 1969, stands out as an allegory for Paul Simon's life. (Enders, 379) However, the
element that stands out the most in this song is not the meaning behind it, but the music itself. The
timbres of this song reflect folk tradition, such as the use of acoustic guitars, bass harmonicas, and a
soft, steady tapping of the guitar and its strings. However, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

Correspondingly, the timbres of this song contain a haunting acoustic guitar, a gritty electric guitar,
bass, drums, and the voices of Simon and Garfunkel. The rhythm of this song has a standard beat,
while its form is strophic. The melody of Sound of Silence has an interesting contour because of the
way it rises and falls. This melody gives the song a remorseful, melancholy tone. On the other hand,
the harmony of the song has an interesting texture because of the way it layers instruments on top of
each other, such as the electric guitar on top of the acoustic guitar at the beginning of the song.
Overall, this song conveys serious depressing emotions. It is reminiscent of the times when we feel
as closed off from the rest of the world. The "sound of silence," in the song is the sound of
loneliness, representing the feeling that no one cares about you, that you are completely alone. I
believe that these emotions hit hard with the people during the 1960's because they have experience

Black Folk
The Souls of Black Folk by W.E.B. Du Bois is one of the most prominent classic books dedicated to
the African–American history. Much has changed since that time in America. However, the question
of racial inequality seems to have far more serious consequences than it was expected. That is why
the book raises vital sociological issues for the contemporary world.
The book by Du Bois represents a collection of stories and sketches on the African–American life. It
underlines the necessity to provide black people with the same rights and freedoms as white people
have: a right to vote, to possess lands, to receive good education and to be free. The second chapter
tells the story about the Freedmen's Bureau during the years of Reconstruction in the South after the
Civil War. The issue ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Du Bois takes readers on a journey from the Reconstructions period to 1903. It takes 164 pages to
discuss the entire era from the history of the African–American community. It starts from the
Freedmen's Bureau and struggle to earn living by farming in the early years of Reconstruction in the
South after the Civil War. Then, it tells a reader about black people unable to find housing and
acquire skills and facing virulent racial bias in the job market. The Harlem Renaissance and racial
movement started from the points described in the book. The book became a basis for the civil rights
and advancement of black people's position in America. It played an important role in the racial
movement and helped to educate those African–American leaders of the black community who led it
to the struggle in the middle of the 20th century. The author also points at the issue of duality of
identity in African–American community. This phenomenon played a crucial role in the uprising of
the revolutionary movements. The book raises the questions of the lack of balanced employment,
ownership and land possession and morality in the American

Folk Rock music is my favorite genre to listen to, such as the Lumineers, Mumford and Sons, and
Judah and the Lion. Folk Rock music is a blend between folk music that is blended with rock and
pop; it was created in the 1960's when it started out with two different artists, Bob Dylan & the
Band, and the Byrd's. The folk revival of the 1960s is often the starting point of fascination with the
style for many contemporary folk fans. One big effect of the '60s folk revival was that it marked the
beginning of folksingers, on a large scale, writing their own material. Since in folk rock, most are
singer/songwriters, instruments that are typically used are electric guitar, electric bass and drums.

Country music is interesting to me since it is a genre where a bunch of different genres originated
from such as folk rock, the similarity of the style to folk rock and bluegrass, and also that most
country artists write and sing their own pieces. Country music was developed right here in the USA
down in the south in the 1920's, being that was the first ever recording. It is also one of the firsts of
popular modern American music. In the 1930's and 1940's before the television was invented, it was
common that American families would sit around a radio to listen to entertainment, and one of the
most popular programs was a live country show called the "Grand Ole Opry". It was based out of
Nashville, which we all know as the home of country music. Back then people would listen to what
was called "Western" music which would have a bunch of clicks and clacks and sound like a horse–
like beat and would have singing cowboys. In the early 1950's another kind of country music
developed and it was known as bluegrass, and the later in the 1960's country rock began to appear
since the country genre was being beat out by rock bands (and this is also when my favorite, Folk
Rock, became about.) During this time is also when other genres began to come about such as Folk
Rock and Country Pop. Instruments that are typically used in the country genre are pretty much all
string instruments such as the acoustic guitar, the banjo, the mandolin, and even the

The Art Of The Folk
The Art of the Folk: Jazz, Blues, Folktales, Dance: The Harlem Renaissance During the nineteenth–
mid–twentieth century, folk became very popular and widely known within the nation. Folk is
considered the ordinary citizens of a public or district considered as the agents of a conventional
lifestyle and particularly as the originators or bearers of the traditions, convictions, and expressions
that make up an unmistakable culture. When people started to realize, their potential and become
open to the public about their abilities, the art of the folk begun to suddenly become more diverse. It

Jazz has no impediments, no course of music. Jazz is extemporization, and an approach to express
happiness and passion. Jazz became very popular around the world. New Orleans was the one place
where the stunning and uncovering jazz style advanced. Jazz became so advanced that other artists
noticed that each instrument that was played had a different sound that could attract to the soul. The
instruments were, cornet, clarinet, trombone, tuba or bass, piano, banjo, and drums
(wordpress.com). These instruments turned into a splendid arrangement underscoring free
additionally pleasingly synchronized music lines. Jazz was very influential in the music industry.
Charlie Parker one of the greatest musicians of all times once said, "Master your instrument, master
the music, then forget all that and just play." (Parker 2.) During the Harlem Renaissance jazz
became an outlet on how African Americans expressed their feelings without words. It became the
reason as to why we have blues, and other famous types of artistic expression.
Blues, on the other hand is considered the sibling of Jazz and of the Harlem Renaissance era. Blues
is a vital sort of music. Most music that you hear today has some type of recreation of the blues. The
blues created a way for the music that we have today. Without blues there would not be any hip hop,
rap, pop, R and B or gospel. Blues is likewise critical for African American culture. African

Does High art of Folk art Best Express Racial Pride ? What was the Harlem Renaissance? And why
was this time period such a great time to express your racial pride? In what ways did African
American artists celebrate racial pride? You may be asking yourself this as you learn about the
Harlem renaissance and how it was such a great time period for African Americans when it came to
expressing themselves. However, many black artists at this time had strong opinions as to how to
show pride. For example, many artists felt that they had to create "High art" in order to show their
pride. But others felt creating "Folk art" was the best way to go. And in many ways I agree in my
opinion, creating folk art was the best way to express racial pride. There are many ways to celebrate

High art is a European style of art that being said Black artists would study abroad just to learn the
skills white artists had when it came to their art. For example, in Doc A known as "Heritage" you
could tell it was high art because in European styles of art they usually use big words when it comes

Doc B "Sonnet to a Negro in Harlem" words such as "Disdainful," "Pompous," and "Supercilious"

Nordic Folk Music
What type of music has simple rhythms to accompany the melody? Repetition to support
improvisation and contrast within the melody? Or a homophonic and thin texture to allow the soloist

Music of the World did a special study to find ties between Nordic folk music and Jazz. We talked to
two musicians about their music and we learned that these two genres of music are more alike than
they seem.
Music of the World talked Jazz trumpeter, Miles Davis, and Nordic folk fiddler, Anders Norudde,
about their experience with composing music in their respective genres. They both note many
similarities such as the use of repetition to support improvisation and ornamentation within the
melody. Davis' famous piece "So What" ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Norudde's song "Josses, Polska efter Magnus Olsson" begins with the Nordic mandola setting a
simple rhythmic harmony to give the melodic lines, established by the fiddle and cello, a steady
ground to play on. The repetitive nature of this piece is established by both the melody and the
harmony. The simple beat is played with Nordic mandola over and over and the melody is added on
top of it. Two different themes are presented towards the beginning of the piece and are played

The Relevancy of Ethnomusicology to the Study of British...
The Relevancy of Ethnomusicology to the Study of British Folk Music
Ethnomusicology has an image problem. Insofar as anyone has heard of ethnomusicologists at all,
there is a fairly common feeling (and not unjustified, bearing in mind what ethnomusicologists
collectively seem to do) that ethnomusicology is, exclusively, the study of non–Western musics.
Actually, this isn't so. Ethnomusicologists study Western traditions also, albeit not in huge numbers
in Britain – but even here, our sparseness in the study of local traditions is probably no more marked
than our sparseness in the study of overseas traditions. (There are just two British
ethnomusicologists who work on Chinese music, for instance, which means that we have something

The point of all these terms was that the investigator sought to understand the topic from the
perspective of the native 'informant'. The ethnomusicologist was as interested in, say, an Egyptian's
'musicology' – i.e., his explanations and understandings of music – as in his music itself. Adoption
of the term signalled a departure from previous research, where it had often been assumed that there
was no native theory. The comparative musicologist (or at least his caricature) had simply (or not so
simply, when we think of old recording technology) remained in his laboratory where he amassed an
archive of wax cylinders and the like. Sitting down (in an armchair, according to most stereotypes)
he (less often, she) then wrote out the music and studied the resulting notation in order to produce
theories about what was going on.
The ethnomusicologist, on the other hand, is himself (and more and more, herself) a collector as
well as an analyst. The model of collection, however, was not that of earlier scholars like Cecil
Sharp, Percy Grainger or Bela Bartok. Rather than ranging widely, but quickly, across a broad
region, the ethnomusicologist was supposed to gather materials through 'participant–observation'.
Instead of gathering recordings alone, the ethnomusicological researcher gathered experience, both

1960s: Contemporary Folk Music And The Social Movement
"Music and social movements have been widely celebrated as two catalysts that can elevate the

time in American history that by many can be described as chaotic. A time in history where folk
music was revived, also called contemporary folk, and seeked to challenge the racial boundaries in
America. A time in which Pop and Rock music revealed the discontent of the young American
generation towards the Vietnam war, established institutions, and middle class values. A time where
music channeled the social movements taking place in America. Music of this period represents a

White America was the only America they accepted, no other skin color would be allowed to go into

American families to rely on government assistance, infuriating Whites. (Marx). Johnny spoke very
poorly of blacks with his lyrics, "Roses are red, and violet's are blue And nigger's are black, you

The Importance Of Folk Music
The reason why history exists is because some people felt that certain events were so important that
they must be recorded down for future generations to see. Many forms of history exist in typical
forms such as text or photos, but some of history's defining moments are displayed in the form of
art. In the past before a written language was formed people passed down their history through oral
means such as stories and music. Music especially played a role in the passing down of history
because it was easy to remember things to the beat of a song. The reason why so many people
remember the lyrics to a song rather than what they studied for a history exam they have coming up
is because our brain can connect the lyrics to the beat which makes it easier to remember. One form
of song which can play a huge role in a society's history and culture is folk music. Folk music
defines the culture of the society and the history behind it. They tell a story of a key person, place,
thing, or event that has occurred in that community and the impact it has had on that community.
Because of their impact on society historians research a places folk music in order to get a better
grasp on what made that place into what it is. Therefore, folk songs are just as legitimate to history
as written documents and provide a unique knowledge that may not be understood by just reading
documents. Many historians spend time researching about a place or event by looking at written
forms of primary

Hungarian Peasant and Folk Music Essay
Hungarian Peasant and Folk Music
I. General confusion about Hungarian folk music.
Gypsy music Peasant music – the real Hungarian folk music – is not Gypsy music. Peasant music
certainly had influence on the songs and playing of gypsies who lived in Hungary and performed in
ensembles, though. Gypsy music used to be the basis of all generalizations about Hungarian music.
It was Ferenc Liszt's monumental error to state that Gypsy music is the creation of gypsies. The so
called 'gypsy scale' points to a southern oriental (Arabic) origin and may possibly have reached
Hungary through the gypsies. This music falsifies Hungarian folk songs by introducing augmented
intervals of the Gypsy scales, which scales were never used by peasants. ... Show more content on

The first widely–known Hungarian dances are composed by known composers and harmonized after
the Viennese style. It is a mystery why they were labeled as Hungarian folk melodies. Popular art
music is set on texts or poems, which is the commonplace language of the town reflecting the
individual tastes and whims of their composers with a less beautiful and corrupt use of the language
in comparison with the high, natural, illiterate musical and poetic artistry of peasant music having
no individual authors or composers yet with a beautiful use of the language full with natural images
and marvelous metaphors. Just an example: here is a quotation of one strophe from the old style of
peasant music: "Sír elöttem az út, – Bánkódik az ösveny, – Még az is azt mondja: – Áldjon meg az
östen" ("In front of me the trail is crying, – The path is lamenting, – Even it says: – God bless you")
It does not work in English. The translation does not show the nicety of the language, its clear
genuine sound, the sound of the words, which language is free from any stylized effects. I would
even risk saying: the sound of the meaning. Popular art music is incompetent to carry poetry as this.
And its music the same way: with its stylized lighter popular taste it cannot emulate that of peasant
music, the music evolved and carried through the natural process of a long illiterate oral

Chinese Folk Songs : The Chinese Story And The Human Story...
Chinese folk songs are again utilized in the Chinese story of Yellow Earth. Like in Street Angel,
music is tied not only to the Chinese story of the human experience, but the human as well,
specifically of women. Folk music in this film is dually important to the Chinese story and the
human story of women's oppression. Like in Street Angel, Chinese folk music is Chinese due to the
historical context of traditional folk music. But unlike in Street Angel, the songs in Yellow Earth are
specific to the immediate surroundings of the singer. Therefore, the songs are sung in response to the
problems the singer faces in the remote region of China, in which this story takes place, and in their
human lives. Cuiqiao's father recognizes Chinese folk music as "just bitter songs." In response to a
query about singing, he says "I'm not happy and not sad. Why should I sing now?" and states that
"when life becomes hard, you remember [the songs]." This proves that the content of the songs is
dependent not only on the Chinese story, but the human story. Art has been used by humanity for
thousands of years to express the contextual emotion of the artist. The use of Chinese folk songs in
Yellow Earth as a reflection of human emotion is part of the human story of this film and makes the
characters' suffering tangible to the audience. Relaying the struggles of the time period through the
art of Chinese folk music helps the audience identify the issues the characters face in rural China

A folk group, according to Martha C. Sims and Martine Stephens, in Living Folklore:
An Introduction to the Study of People and Their Traditions is described as "Families, friends, co–

that everyone is born into is their family. Familial folk groups can share values, beliefs and
anecdotes, similar to other folk groups (39). However, unlike other folk groups, one does not choose
their family. This leaves some people, like myself, to question their belonging within this folk group.
Although I share some beliefs with my family, we disagree on others many others. The many
differences between me and my family leads me to feel as if I have one foot in my folk group and

Essay On Folk Art Of India

  • 1. Essay On Folk Art Of India Folk Art India had always been known as the land that portrayed cultural and traditional vibrancy through its conventional arts and crafts. The 35 states and union territories sprawled across the country have their own distinct cultural and traditional identities, and are displayed through various forms of art prevalent there. Every region in India has its own style and pattern of art, which is known as folk art. Other than folk art, there is yet another form of traditional art practiced by several tribes or rural population, which is classified as tribal art. The folk and tribal arts of India are very ethnic and simple, and yet colorful and vibrant enough to speak volumes about the country's rich heritage. Folk art in India apparently has a great potential in the international market because of its traditional aesthetic sensibility and authenticity. The rural folk paintings of India bear distinctive colorful designs, which are treated with religious and mystical motifs. Some of the most famous folk paintings of India are the Madhubani paintings of Bihar, Patachitra paintings from the state of Odisha, the Nirmal paintings of Andhra Pradesh, and other such folk art forms. Folk art is however not restricted only to paintings, but also stretches to other art forms such as pottery, home decorations, ornaments, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... • 3. Commutated To American Folk Music permutated to American Folk Music, in 1985 he said: "The thing about rock'n'roll is that for me anyway it wasn't enough ... There were great catch– phrases and driving pulse rhythms ... but the songs weren't serious or didn't reflect life in a realistic way. I knew that when I got into folk music, it was more of a serious type of thing. The songs are filled with more despair, more sadness, more triumph, more faith in the supernatural, much deeper feelings" (Bob Dylan, 1985) In the pursuit of American Folk music, Bob travelled to New York City in 1961, to perform and meet his musical idol Woody Guthrie, who was in hospital at the time, seriously ill with Huntington's disease (His illness finally lead to his death in 1967). • 5. The Folk Through Three Decades This essay, by Sija Tsai, demonstrates in a historical chronology how the WFF (Winnipeg Folk Festival) changed its suggested definition of the folk through three decades. She explored this topic by exploring media coverage and administrator beliefs on the subject of the folklore presence at these festivals. The festival was inaugurated in 1974 and was originally designated to celebrate Winnipeg's centenary. However, with its success, the festival because an annual celebration of folk. At its beginnings, the WFF featured mostly Anglo North American and Irish "folk" singers. the musical acts would feature "performances (often vocal) of traditional material (often ballads) and original material (often highly politicized) by mostly young ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The outcome of the pluralization of the WFF performances had mixed reviews. Some participants thought that the festival was betraying their folk value due to the implementation of more popular and "world" artist and others argued that it was a good change and that it supported a diversity acceptance narrative. The pluralization of performances in the WFF's continued through the 1980's and 1990's. During the 1990's there was an apparent fusion of traditional and popular idioms which further blurred the lines between its suggested binary. During the early 2000 there were questions addressing the political issues of the program such as the apparent absence of aboriginal performances. In conclusion, the change in performance seen in the last three decades of the WFF shows that the idea of the "folk" is tangible and is subject to change. One of the principle reason that its definition changes is because of the underlying idea that folk music is music which features exoticism from the "normal" repertoire which constitutes a Canadian identity. Therefore, while in the 1970, the English ballads were considered different, as the performance frequency of the English ballads were growing, its integration into the Canadian sound/music identity was being solidified. Hence, the three decades of folk festival shows that this continuous search for the exotic and fusion is due in part of a ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 7. The Souls Of Black Folk W.E.B DuBois wrote the book titled The Souls of Black Folk in 1903 as a response to the condition of black people in America. The book predates the 1920s Harlem Renaissance, but can be viewed as a precursor to the New Negro Movement. Prior to 1903, blacks lived primarily in the South, but by the 1920s the black population in New York City rose by 115 percent. The movement of blacks from the South to the North occurred for various reasons; discontent with life in the Jim Crow South, widespread violence against blacks and the opportunity for jobs in the North due to WWI. The Souls of Black Folk is the written anthem for the Harlem Renaissance; the book voices the condition of blacks in 1903 and aims to celebrate African–American culture, to strive for equality and break with the philosophy of Booker T. Washington. DuBois was born in Massachusetts in 1868 and was educated at prestigious institutions like Fisk and Harvard. DuBois was an intellectual black Northerner who had had many opportunities, but was far removed from the condition of blacks in the South. Yet his teaching positions at rural schools in Tennessee and Southern black colleges would have given him an understanding of black life in the South and would have inspired him to write The Souls of Black Folk. Through his experiences in the South, DuBois obtained a clearer picture of where blacks stood in society. DuBois was part of the older generation of prominent African Americans that became the inspiration for ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 9. Jewish Folk Dance As A Means Of Creating A New Israeli... Jewish national identity was colonized when Jewish people were forced out of ancient Israel and dispersed to various different nations. Anti–Semitism was one of the principle means for this colonization because it made it dangerous for Jewish people to express their own national identity in the European nations they dispersed to. As a result, certain traditions, like Jewish folk dance, which were not codified, were lost. Jewish folk dance also disappeared because folk traditions are strongly connected to the land in which they originated and the majority of Jews left Israel. Furthermore, because of the third commandant of the Torah, Jews were not allowed to depict images of their dance. Consequently, their traditional dance was lost forever. However, when the Jews returned to Israel in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, they found it important to recreate traditions like folk dance to reassert their fractured nationhood after so many years of diaspora. Thus, Israeli folk dance was a means of creating a new Israeli culture. Israeli folk dance was created by using elements from other dance cultures with themes and music of modern Israel. In this paper, I will argue that while anti–Semitism resulted in the colonization of Jewish national identity, women re–created Israeli folk dance as a means to establish a new Jewish identity, as well as an identity for themselves. By focusing on Romania and Yemen, we will identify the vestiges of colonialism in Israeli folk dance, and ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 11. American Folk Music Revival Of The 1960s Harry Belafonte and the American Folk Music Revival of the 1960s The 1960s is considered to be one of the worst decade in American and world history. The whole world was going through adversities, with wars taking place in several countries, civil rights protests taking place in southern states, and a president assassination taking place in Dallas, Texas. While the world was facing these tragic, horrifying events, the music world was developing a new type of music genre: folk music. Music artists from the American Folk Music Revival in the 1960s would improvise a song, while trying to establish a way to deliver important messages to the people everywhere. The ballad "Day– O" by Harry Belafonte, played a huge role in the American Folk Music Revival of the 1960s. The American Folk Music Revival in the 1960s sparked an interest and fascinated many music loving people around the world. The American Folk Music Revival is just like the title of its name–it is a compilation of folk music. There were two different groups during the American Folk Music Revival in the 1960s: the singer and songwriters who wrote their own lyrics to the melodies of traditional music, and the singer and songwriters who stuck to the traditional songs and their styles, popularizing Appalachia music, Cajun music, and other traditional styles (Ruehl 1). Many songwriters such as Harry Belafonte, popularized the folk music genre and made themselves known to everyone nationwide. The songs that they wrote ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 13. Folk Song Goodnight Irene By Huddie Ledbetter These are the top 8 folk songs that everyone knows. Whether you're 9 or 90, it's unlikely that you haven't heard the songs on this list. Number 8 Goodnight Irene by Huddie William Ledbetter https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xn50JSI0W–E This song was originally written and recorded by Huddie Ledbetter in 1933. It's been redone in the years since– most notably by The Weavers who recorded their own version just one year after his death. It lasted over 25 weeks on the Billboard Best Seller chart. With its popularity, most people are more familiar with the lyrics from The Weavers than those from Ledbetter. The success of The Weaver's version of the song brought out more artists who did their own take on the song. Frank Sinatra, Moon Mullican and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... He used a typewriter to get the poem "out of his head" then promptly forgot about it. His housemate named Peter Yarrow looked for him years later to give him credit for the song. He's still getting royalties today. There's always been a segment of people who believe that the song is referring to smoking marijuana as taking a "puff" on a joint or "draggin'" is the smoking itself. Both Lipton and Yarrow reject the interpretation. Number 3 Sounds of Silence by Simon & Garfunkle https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XgbBLKet14E This is another song written by Paul Simon between the years of 1963 and 1964. It was eventually released in 1964, but didn't meet with much success. The duo broke up after the failure, but the next year, it began to get play on radio stations on the east coast of the U.S. The producer remixed the track and released it in 1965. The duo reunited and released the song on their second album with the same name. It was added to the National Recording Registry in the Library of Congress in 2013 as a historically and culturally important song. Number 2 If I Had a Hammer by Pete Seeger ... • 15. The Effects Of Folk Music On American History Odetta After reading the articles about folk music as well as articles about the famous folk singer, Odetta Holmes, I have learned that, folk music is music with lyrics that contain social issues, economic issues, hardships as well as relationship difficulties. Folk music is traditionally played with no more than a acoustic guitar or banjo. I have also learned that folk music has been around for a very long time and is, perhaps, the very first genre of music that started all around the world. Folk music is basically the roots of the particular society that it is being played and sang at. Folk music has been around in many countries such as, Ireland, England, America, and many other European Countries. Folk music significantly plays a huge part in U.S. history. Folk music is significant to American history because, it discuses a vast amount of different problems and historical events that have happened throughout U.S. history. An example of this is, singing about wars was a popular topic, along with political issues, economic issues, labor issues, relationship issues, as well as many others throughout the years of American history. These vast amount of topics and hardships in these songs not only show how these people felt at the time, but can also show an actual timeline of events that happened in U.S. history. I will be discussing one of these famous and important folk singers, Odetta Holmes. I will be analyzing and discussing her life and success in her ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

American Folk Music Music and the Music; an art form that when examined on the surface may appear as a luxury for the masses but an in–depth inspection can conclude that under the exterior these art forms held a much stronger message of activism and social justice. Whether it is the invention of the politically voiced folk music, sexually proactive Rock and Roll, or the challenging voices of soul; the profound impact on cultural norms provided by music is that it allowed people to discuss their dissatisfaction with the American dream of their era. Although in today's society it is not a seemingly difficult task to achieve; in the early 50's and 60's, this was a hindrance for musicians of colour that sought to create and sell their music. Berry Gordy Jr. changed the position of black musicians in society and allowed for these artists to make a name for themselves. The creation of Motown Records can be attributed to the success of many artists that are still well known today such as Stevie Wonder, Marvin Gaye, and Aretha Franklin. For the first time in history artists of colour not only had the freedom to record music but it was widely accepted throughout America. • 19. The Folk Music Of The Civil Rights Movement Response Paper #4 The folk music of the Civil Rights Movement "came out of tradition, common experience, and generations of resistance" (Dunaway 2010: 140). The songs used throughout the movement derived from the shared experiences and struggles of African Americans while connecting "the gentle, idealistic world of folk music and the integrationist world of civil rights" (Dunaway 2010: 145). Songs, such as "We Shall Overcome", were put through the folk process, where a song is passed on and alterations are made to verses (Dunaway 2010: 141). These folk songs evolved to embody the movements they were used for: "Those songs came out of the movement. The songs came out of very specific movements" (Dunaway 2010: 139). Folk music, which can ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Due to the folk process, the style and performance of the song changed depending on where the song was used and who was performing it: "We Shall Overcome" in Albany loosened way up with lots of space for improvisations, lots of antiphony and answering and calling, and it stayed that way in terms of the black movement in the South wherever it went after that. So Albany to a large extent took all the music that had been done up to that point, and transformed it" (Dunaway 2010, 139– 140). "We Shall Overcome" is a folk song because it "came out of tradition, common experience, and generations of resistance" (Dunaway 2010: 140). The song's origins are unclear, but can be traced back to a song that slaves had sung while working and old church songs that were never written down until 1900. Additionally, the adaptability and flexibility of the song's structure can be found in other folk songs during the Civil Rights Movement: "The evolution of "We Shall Overcome" from a religious folk song to the anthem of the integration movement is a case study of folk process" (Dunaway 2010, 141). The commercialization of "We Shall Overcome" would have taken away all of the power that the song possesses and its significance in the Civil Rights Movement. Led by the likes of Woody Guthrie and Burl Ives, the genre originally served the revolutionary purpose of giving voice to those unsatisfied with the social conventions in which society confined them. But it wasn't long before the movement transcended itself, the music gaining traction in the 1950's when the leftist messages of folk music reached an audience beyond the scope of the demographic for which it was originally intended, the movement's reputation shifting from a leftist means of expression to a mainstream culture fad. The tale could also be seen as a folk tale, set in a realistic setting with real people, but the events are skewed and not quite right. The epic accomplishes the first possible intention through its many characters, the use known locations, and basing the majority of the tale around two individual families that would have been well known around the time it was written. However, the tale is not entirely accurate, which strengthens the idea that it was more of a folk tale. Throughout the epic the audience is introduced to two families, beginning far before the birth of the man who would attributed to the title. The tale then follows these families through the events that led up to the main plot of the epic, going so far as to keep detailed track of who married who and where each character came from. • 35. American Folk Musicals In Quiara Alegría's In The Heights According to Rick Altman, American folk musicals have essential components: idealized depiction of 'America,' merge of past and present, depiction of the family, home, or community, and secondary conflict between two groups. Likewise, the Broadway musical In the Heights depicts the pursuit of "American dreams" and "home" as well. Therefore, audiences and readers start to question that if Lin–Manuel Miranda and Quiara Alegría's In the Heights is a typical American folk musical that Altman describes or not. Thus, I will use evidence of songs, plots, and lyrics from In the Heights to prove that this musical piece partially fulfills Altman's definition of American folk musicals. "The folk musical can not survive without a sense of community," Altman says, addressing the importance of the role of community and family in American folk musicals (Altman 274). The first song of the musical, which is called "In the Heights" as well, points out that all main characters together in the scene form a community of "Latino." • 37. The Evolution of Folk Music Vocals The Evolution of Folk Music Vocals By its definition, folk music technically refers to indigenous forms of music created by local, regional or native populations as a way of engaging in cultural expression. This means that at its core, folk music is not intended to command a commercial value nor is it necessarily folk music by definition once a form has been co–opted by an outside culture. However, this is also a definition for folk which has long been rendered obsolete by the aesthetic and vocal qualities that listeners tend to associate with the genre today. This is because the most historically significant instances in which folk music converged with the commercial zeitgeist would come to produce a highly distinctive set of sounds. Indeed, when we think of folk music, one tends instantly to conjure image of a young Bob Dylan with harmonica rack and guitar, wheezing his half–singing, half–speaking vocal style in Greenwich Village. This iconic vision from the Folk Revival of the 1960s is probably the best bridge that we have to folk influences like the socialist activists of the Almanac Singers and the Weavers, like Delta country folk singers like Mississippi John Hurt or Josh White, or like bluegrass innovators such as the Carter Family. Indeed, Nelson (2010) tells that figures such as "Woody Guthrie, Pete Seeger, and John and Alan Lomax, made a huge impact on folk music in America, one which is still felt today. • 39. Simon And Garfunkel: Folk Music Analysis Simon and Garfunkel was a folk–rock duo that was a part of the 1960's folk revival. Their music evokes certain elements from the folk tradition, including the use of the strophic form and certain themes, such as family, love, and loss. These themes were very important to the folk tradition because it was the reason and rhyme behind these songs. As a short example, the song called, The Boxer, released in 1969, stands out as an allegory for Paul Simon's life. (Enders, 379) However, the element that stands out the most in this song is not the meaning behind it, but the music itself. The timbres of this song reflect folk tradition, such as the use of acoustic guitars, bass harmonicas, and a soft, steady tapping of the guitar and its strings. However, ... The rhythm of this song has a standard beat, while its form is strophic. The melody of Sound of Silence has an interesting contour because of the way it rises and falls. This melody gives the song a remorseful, melancholy tone. On the other hand, the harmony of the song has an interesting texture because of the way it layers instruments on top of each other, such as the electric guitar on top of the acoustic guitar at the beginning of the song. Overall, this song conveys serious depressing emotions. It is reminiscent of the times when we feel as closed off from the rest of the world. The "sound of silence," in the song is the sound of loneliness, representing the feeling that no one cares about you, that you are completely alone. I believe that these emotions hit hard with the people during the 1960's because they have experience those feelings all the time. It reminded them of how the world, society, is against them just because they are a different race, gender, or sexuality. They both note many similarities such as the use of repetition to support improvisation and ornamentation within the melody. Davis' famous piece "So What" ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The piece begins and continues with the piano, bass, and set playing the same rhythms over and over and ends with them playing the same rhythms even after the piano and bass have inprov solos. Davis begins the melody by stating a theme and then improvising on it some before the solo fades out and the saxophone soloist picks it up and embellishes the theme more. In a similar way, Norudde's song "Josses, Polska efter Magnus Olsson" begins with the Nordic mandola setting a simple rhythmic harmony to give the melodic lines, established by the fiddle and cello, a steady ground to play on. The repetitive nature of this piece is established by both the melody and the harmony. The simple beat is played with Nordic mandola over and over and the melody is added on top of it. Two different themes are presented towards the beginning of the piece and are played ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 57. Synthesis Essay: Coloring Music Vs Acoustic Folk Music If you took one look at my Spotify (online radio) history, you might come to the conclusion that it was not used only by me but some awkward combination of my family and friends. I don't know what stylistic similarities they have that make me enjoy them, but if the music sounds good and stirs emotion within me then I'll listen to it. Usually one artist or song can send me into a deep dive of the genre which ends in many albums being added to the collection. While listening to Bob Dylan's Highway 61 Revisited, I was lead through countless hours of Classic Rock as well as acoustic folk music, which spurred me to listen to Dylan's other works. Recently Chance the Rapper's masterpiece Coloring Book has gotten me into not only rap but also a little ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 59. The Relevancy of Ethnomusicology to the Study of British... The Relevancy of Ethnomusicology to the Study of British Folk Music Ethnomusicology has an image problem. Insofar as anyone has heard of ethnomusicologists at all, there is a fairly common feeling (and not unjustified, bearing in mind what ethnomusicologists collectively seem to do) that ethnomusicology is, exclusively, the study of non–Western musics. Actually, this isn't so. Ethnomusicologists study Western traditions also, albeit not in huge numbers in Britain – but even here, our sparseness in the study of local traditions is probably no more marked than our sparseness in the study of overseas traditions. (There are just two British ethnomusicologists who work on Chinese music, for instance, which means that we have something ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The point of all these terms was that the investigator sought to understand the topic from the perspective of the native 'informant'. The ethnomusicologist was as interested in, say, an Egyptian's 'musicology' – i.e., his explanations and understandings of music – as in his music itself. Adoption of the term signalled a departure from previous research, where it had often been assumed that there was no native theory. The comparative musicologist (or at least his caricature) had simply (or not so simply, when we think of old recording technology) remained in his laboratory where he amassed an archive of wax cylinders and the like. Sitting down (in an armchair, according to most stereotypes) he (less often, she) then wrote out the music and studied the resulting notation in order to produce theories about what was going on. The ethnomusicologist, on the other hand, is himself (and more and more, herself) a collector as well as an analyst. The model of collection, however, was not that of earlier scholars like Cecil Sharp, Percy Grainger or Bela Bartok. Rather than ranging widely, but quickly, across a broad region, the ethnomusicologist was supposed to gather materials through 'participant–observation'. Instead of gathering recordings alone, the ethnomusicological researcher gathered experience, both in the form of ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

They are connected by the events that were happening at the time the songs were written, and often go hand–in–hand. For where I am from, folk songs about the Revolution are of great historic importance. • 63. 1960s: Contemporary Folk Music And The Social Movement "Music and social movements have been widely celebrated as two catalysts that can elevate the human condition by lifting spirits and undermining subordination" (Reds 10). The 1960s were a time in American history that by many can be described as chaotic. A time in history where folk music was revived, also called contemporary folk, and seeked to challenge the racial boundaries in America. A time in which Pop and Rock music revealed the discontent of the young American generation towards the Vietnam war, established institutions, and middle class values. A time where music channeled the social movements taking place in America. Music of this period represents a unique connection between music and history. The 60s although chaotic were a leap ... Kendrick was a descendant of the lightning district of the village, Nas was born and raised in the fire district, and Jermaine was a simple village boy who grew crops and raised cattle. Ever since the village was established it was divided into four main groups. The fire district, the lightning district, the village folk, and the All Mighty's. Mostly all lived in peace until one day. It was December and the day was cold. The wind blew rapidly and incoherently as the village folk worked on the crops and attend to their many cattle. • 67. The Importance Of Folk Music The reason why history exists is because some people felt that certain events were so important that they must be recorded down for future generations to see. Many forms of history exist in typical forms such as text or photos, but some of history's defining moments are displayed in the form of art. In the past before a written language was formed people passed down their history through oral means such as stories and music. Music especially played a role in the passing down of history because it was easy to remember things to the beat of a song. The reason why so many people remember the lyrics to a song rather than what they studied for a history exam they have coming up is because our brain can connect the lyrics to the beat which makes it easier to remember. One form of song which can play a huge role in a society's history and culture is folk music. Folk music defines the culture of the society and the history behind it. They tell a story of a key person, place, thing, or event that has occurred in that community and the impact it has had on that community. Because of their impact on society historians research a places folk music in order to get a better grasp on what made that place into what it is. Therefore, folk songs are just as legitimate to history as written documents and provide a unique knowledge that may not be understood by just reading documents. Many historians spend time researching about a place or event by looking at written forms of primary ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 69. Hungarian Peasant and Folk Music Essay Hungarian Peasant and Folk Music I. General confusion about Hungarian folk music. Gypsy music Peasant music – the real Hungarian folk music – is not Gypsy music. Peasant music certainly had influence on the songs and playing of gypsies who lived in Hungary and performed in ensembles, though. Gypsy music used to be the basis of all generalizations about Hungarian music. It was Ferenc Liszt's monumental error to state that Gypsy music is the creation of gypsies. The so called 'gypsy scale' points to a southern oriental (Arabic) origin and may possibly have reached Hungary through the gypsies. This music falsifies Hungarian folk songs by introducing augmented intervals of the Gypsy scales, which scales were never used by peasants. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The first widely–known Hungarian dances are composed by known composers and harmonized after the Viennese style. It is a mystery why they were labeled as Hungarian folk melodies. Popular art music is set on texts or poems, which is the commonplace language of the town reflecting the individual tastes and whims of their composers with a less beautiful and corrupt use of the language in comparison with the high, natural, illiterate musical and poetic artistry of peasant music having no individual authors or composers yet with a beautiful use of the language full with natural images and marvelous metaphors. Just an example: here is a quotation of one strophe from the old style of peasant music: "Sír elöttem az út, – Bánkódik az ösveny, – Még az is azt mondja: – Áldjon meg az östen" ("In front of me the trail is crying, – The path is lamenting, – Even it says: – God bless you") It does not work in English. The translation does not show the nicety of the language, its clear genuine sound, the sound of the words, which language is free from any stylized effects. I would even risk saying: the sound of the meaning. Popular art music is incompetent to carry poetry as this. And its music the same way: with its stylized lighter popular taste it cannot emulate that of peasant music, the music evolved and carried through the natural process of a long illiterate oral ... • 71. Chinese Folk Songs : The Chinese Story And The Human Story... Chinese folk songs are again utilized in the Chinese story of Yellow Earth. Like in Street Angel, music is tied not only to the Chinese story of the human experience, but the human as well, specifically of women. Folk music in this film is dually important to the Chinese story and the human story of women's oppression. Like in Street Angel, Chinese folk music is Chinese due to the historical context of traditional folk music. But unlike in Street Angel, the songs in Yellow Earth are specific to the immediate surroundings of the singer. Therefore, the songs are sung in response to the problems the singer faces in the remote region of China, in which this story takes place, and in their human lives. Cuiqiao's father recognizes Chinese folk music as "just bitter songs." In response to a query about singing, he says "I'm not happy and not sad. Why should I sing now?" and states that "when life becomes hard, you remember [the songs]." This proves that the content of the songs is dependent not only on the Chinese story, but the human story. Art has been used by humanity for thousands of years to express the contextual emotion of the artist. The use of Chinese folk songs in Yellow Earth as a reflection of human emotion is part of the human story of this film and makes the characters' suffering tangible to the audience. Relaying the struggles of the time period through the art of Chinese folk music helps the audience identify the issues the characters face in rural China ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 73. A Folk Group, By Martha C. Sims And Martine Stephens A folk group, according to Martha C. Sims and Martine Stephens, in Living Folklore: An Introduction to the Study of People and Their Traditions is described as "Families, friends, co– workers and others all are groups based on common interests and experiences" (300). A folk group that everyone is born into is their family. Familial folk groups can share values, beliefs and anecdotes, similar to other folk groups (39). However, unlike other folk groups, one does not choose their family. This leaves some people, like myself, to question their belonging within this folk group. Although I share some beliefs with my family, we disagree on others many others. The many differences between me and my family leads me to feel as if I have one foot in my folk group and another outside. The internal conflict about my sense of belonging has forced me to make decisions that have contributed to the creation of my individual identity. My family consists of myself, my father, my mother and my younger brother. While my mother and brother are rambunctious, my father and I tend to be more laid back. My dad practices Roman Catholicism, while my mother leads a secular life. While I went to a private, Catholic school my entire life before LSMSA, my brother goes to public school. My father and I are early risers, while my brother and mom like to sleep late. As my family seems to only exist on opposite extremes, there is a lot of middle ground for me to choose where I stand.
