The Popular Music Industry
In this article, Peterson and Berger show how the organization of the popular music industry affects
the music that America hears.
Popular Music Industry
The innovation and diversity that marked popular music during the 1960s was due to a major change
in the organization of the industry. Peterson and Berger concluded from their study that innovation
and diversity depend on the extent on the degree of market concentration. They argued that "high
market concentration leads to homogeneity and standardization, while low market concentration
leads to innovation and diversity (Lopes, 1992.)." I agree that if the market concentration is high in
popular music, then music will be the same. The music will not be different and creative. However,
Burnett and Weber partially confirmed the prediction of increasing market concentration, but stated
that the trends in diversity had a new dynamic of equilibrium in the popular music industry.
Peterson and Berger decided to focus on the singles that reached the Top Ten on the weekly
Billboard Hot 100 Singles chart from 1948 to 1973. The music industry's control of the production
and consumption was measured. They measured innovation and diversity in various ways; they used

Popular Music As Vehicle Of Popular Culture
POPULAR MUSIC AS VEHICLE OF POPULAR CULTURE,
WITH SPECIAL REFERENCE TO CONTEMPORARY MIZO CULTURE
By Lalven Sanga
INTRODUCTION
The rapid growth of communication and development of media brought about changes to the human
culture and societies. The study of culture is more complex than ever before. Richard H. Robbins
says,
"In cultural anthropology, as in every science, we strive to look beyond the world of everyday
experiences to discover the patterns and meanings that lie behind that world."
What lies behind the force and development of contemporary culture of the Mizo – how popular
music can serve as an elements or a sub culture of the global popular culture, is what I seek to find
here. Due to the advancement of technologies and mass communication system that reaches almost
every corner of Mizoram, it is important to research on the media that is significant to the Mizo
culture. In this research, I look at the backgrounds, definitions, anthropological approaches for my
thesis, and how popular music and popular culture interacts in Mizo culture.
I. DIMENSION OF CROSS–CULTURAL ANTHROPOLOGY AND POPULAR MUSIC
Ted C. Lewis says,
"The emerging anthropology of globalization represents a convergence of a number of interlinked
changes in the anthropologist's scholarship, especially in subject matter, theory, the
conceptualization of culture, and the ways that data are collected and analyzed."

Popular Mexican Music
While the music in Mexico has evolved over the years, it has successfully remained true to its roots
and traditions of typical Mexican music. Influenced by a diverse range of cultures, the music in
Mexico has been molded by early Europeans, original natives of Mexico, and the modern–day
industries of the United States, as well. Popular music in Mexico includes genres of Pop, Banda,
Tejano, and Latin Alternative. The ability to appreciate music at its fullest extent comes with the
responsibility to be knowledgeable of different cultures and their music. While examining Mexico's

songs and styles, Josh Kun, a professor who earned a Ph.D. in ethnic studies at the University of
California at Berkeley states, "'I don't think that view captures the truth of it...Sure, a lot of the
groups were doing covers of U.S. and British rock songs, and they were modeling themselves after
their heroes. However, in many cases the music they produced, if only by altering it in small ways,
was creating a new hybrid...they started the process of interpreting foreign music through local
idioms'" (Holston 2). A Latin alternative band from Mexico City named, "Los de Abajo" or "The
Underdogs" are a prime example of this genre of music as their music includes many different types
of sounds and uses influences from many distinct cultures. Holston describes this band as being "an
example of modem rock en espanol as its best with aggressive lyrics and solid elements of salsa,
son, and cumbia" (2). Latin alternative music in Mexico is not only a popular genre, but it has

Modern Music And Its Impact On Popular Music
Popular music is an example of what cultural industries produce and also what Theodor Adorno
criticizes in his essay, On Popular Music. Theodor Adorno is a German philosopher, socialist, and
also a composer. He analyzes popular music with the perspective not only from music, but also from
the economic system based on Marx's idea. This paper first discusses his theory about popular
music, including three important key terms and then how he develops this theory based on Marxism.
Further, this paper will also apply Adorno's theory to a Disney movie, Frozen in order to evaluate his
theory. By comparing popular music with serious music, Theodor Adorno makes a theory that
criticizes popular music, suggesting three key words to describe characteristics of popular music:
standardization, pseudo–individualization, and social cement. In other words, because of these
characteristics, Adorno thinks popular music as inferior to serious music. The first and the primary
characteristic of popular music, standardization means that popular music is assimilated to
successful music in both structure and content (Adorno 73). As the example of the standardized
structure, he mentions the chorus because it is standardized by the limit of one octave and one note
with thirty–two bars. Not only is the whole structure including the chorus standardized, but also the
content of popular music is standardized. Although he does not introduce examples in his essay, one
of the standardized contents is about

Duke Ellington's Impact On Popular Music
Considered one of the greatest jazz composers of all time. Duke Ellington had an enormous impact
on the popular music in the late 1920s. For almost fifty years he toured the world as a bandleader
and piano player. Today his recordings are among the most popular jazz of the big–band era.
Born in Washington D.C. in 1899 Edward Kennedy Ellington was his name or better known as
"Duke" began playing piano as a child. His mother who also played the piano saw his education and
by the time he was seventeen he began playing professionally. Becoming a famous piano player in
Washington D.C. Ellington started to make his own music. In 1922 he moved to New York and by
1923 he formed his own band called the Washingtonians. By 1926 Ellington's band had found a
small amount of fans and started playing their music at Harlem's famous Cotton Club. This was to
be a major turning point in his career, providing him with access to larger audiences through radio
and recordings.
The group grew larger in size in size and Ellington took the chance to be a leader in it. They played
in what was called "jungle" style their slick arrangements often recognized by the sound of
trumpeter James "Bubber" Miley. A good example of this is Ellington's first signature song, "East St.

believed in letting the sound of each musician play against each other. He wrote music that topped

The Influence Of Jazz On American Popular Music
When I started this course on American popular music, I was not sure what to expect. As the course
went on, I became surprised by how much I have learned. This class has helped me explore many
genres and learn how to analyze songs. My favorite genre that was explored during this course is
jazz. While understanding the roots of jazz, towards the end of the course, I observed how I listened
to music differently.
Jazz has always been one of my favorite genres. Jazz feels very expressive and allows the musician
to share their heart with the audience, this is one of the reasons it is one of my favorite genres. My
experience with music has been through dance, and dancing to jazz is something I've always
enjoyed. One characteristic of jazz is improvisation, which allows the musician the chance to create
their own melodic lines. In dance, we create our own movements to the tune and it is always a great
experience to have two expressive hearts come together to express one tune. Since jazz has such a
special place in my heart, I truly enjoyed learning the roots of jazz. ... Show more content on

These ragtime players had huge influence on jazz. The earliest jazz recordings are known as
traditional jazz or New Orleans jazz. New Orleans is the birth place of the genre. Jazz seems to be a
combination of African and European rhythms. The makeup of traditional jazz is different from
other genres although some underlying characteristics are from ragtime. The makeup includes the
front–line, which include musicians with lead parts, playing cornets or trumpets, clarinets, and
trombones. The rhythm section includes the piano, banjo, and percussion. This combination of
instruments creates a unique

Popular Music Of The 80s
The use of synthesizers is one way in which modern popular music is heavily influenced by the
music of the 80s. Synthesizers, keyboards, and keytars were all common instruments in popular
music in the 1980s. Many rock, hip–hop, and pop musicians incorporated or relied heavily on these
instruments for back beats. These instruments lost popularity during the 1990s and early 2000s. In
fact, during that time musicians using keytars were often not taken seriously. But in today's pop
scene, popular artists such as Lady Gaga and LMFAO are openly playing keytars, and are all the
more popular because of it. The use of the synthesizer has become ubiquitous in modern popular
music. It is obvious that the artists of today are heavily influenced by

Popular Music And Popular Rock Music In The 1960's
In the 1960's there were many types of music but rock was one of the most popular and influential,
but do you know why? Popular rock music in the 1960's is different than popular rock music today,
rock music had just been created recently and was getting very popular and was also starting to
dominate the music charts. Rock in the 1960's was very popular and influential to society. Body
paragraph 1 Rock and roll has changed throughout history. To begin, "rock 'n' roll emerged in the
1950's. The creators of rock music were pioneers who turned away from the conventions of the
music business, searching for a new sound. By the mid–1960's, however, rock dominated the music
industry, and it remains one of the most important divisions of popular music" When the pioneers
started searching for a new sound of music and found one, what they had found was rock. This is the
how rock music started and by the mid–1960's it had officially dominated the music industry and
still remains as one of the most popular divisions of music. "The 1960's became a time of peak
creativity for rock music, which earned wide respect as a legitimate art form. Rock blossomed into
many new styles and sounds. By the mid–1960's, rock music had become the dominant form of
popular music". This shows how the rock genre started to branch off in ways such as people starting
different types of rock such as hard rock and more people started listening to it. And because there

Authenticity In Popular Music
Authenticity in popular music has been an area of discussion since Elvis (Moore 2002 as cited by
Gunders 2013) and the meaning and subsequent significance of it within popular music is an area of
much contention. Some scholars suggest the term be disregarded as problematic, ultimately
meaningless and irrelevant (Gunders 2013) however while there are differing opinions over the
importance of authenticity in popular music, its existence within the industry cannot be questioned.
"Genre can basically be defined as a category or type" (Shuker pp 95) and is a central aspect of
popular music studies. It acts as a set of rules, identifying music as sharing a certain style or set of
conventions. Defining authenticity in music is a difficult process ... Show more content on

John writes songs infused with his personality (Frith 2001) and establishes authenticity by allowing
his listeners to identify with him and his music. He establishes a connection with listeners by
creating songs that resonate with them, songs with feelings that are easily transferred to their own
lives, consequently allowing them to take part in his music (Frith 2001). The song 'Candle in the
Wind ' is an example of this. As Frith discusses, "what the audience applauded [in Candle in the
Wind] was not John's actual feeling of grief but his ability to provide a performance of grief in
which we as listeners could take part." (Frith 2001, pp 94.) Similarly, The Spice Girls achieved a
"girl–next–door" (Leach 2001 pp149) authenticity by promoting audience identification. They wrote
songs with relatable messages about love, friendship and jealousy, establishing authenticity by
allowing their music to resonate with their audience. Taylor Swift is a recent musician to achieve
authenticity in this manner. Swift writes honest, personal songs about "commonplace feelings [of]
love, loss and jealousy" (Frith 2001 pp 96), inserting her own experiences into the music and
allowing for greater audience identification. She seems like a childhood friend, approachable and
genuine because of the relatable content of her music. Her music seems to express some of our own
experiences and thoughts, which differs from the methods employed in rock. As Leach (2001) states,
authentic rock bands speak for their audience, while pop artists such as Taylor Swift and The Spice
Girls speak as and with their

Negative Effects Of Popular Music
The Inimical Side To Popular Song Lyrics One reason why popular music poses threats is because it
influences young children with villainous intentions. In a world where rap is one of the most popular
genres of music for its rebellious and materialistic nature, young people can not help but be
influenced by their favorite artist's actions. Rap glorifies illegal activities as a way of expression and
a way to get rich quick. Rap or any genre of music for that matter is extremely influential in almost
anything people do from slang, fashion, and even culture. Many famous rap songs are centered
around the artists wealth and or clout; owning an expensive watch, having a fast car, and
disrespecting women is very common in various songs throughout the music industry whether it be
pop, rap, or rock. Explicit music lyrics are destructive to a child's development and expose children
to criminal acts. Another detrimental side of rap is it's extensive use of profanity and lack of
leadership. Use of colorful language in rap is what makes the genre rebellious and appealing to
easily influenced children, but it's unneeded there are plenty of other artists that get their message
across without the use of profanity. The use of profanity is a touchy subject and is something most
parents do not want their children to hear it's vulgar and disrespectful but when a teenager hears it in
their favorite song it's forever burnt into their vocabulary. Most rappers do not leave a good message

popular music reflect the violence and despair in an artist's imagination or in society. But they
reflect it–they don't create it" (82). Therefore, music does not cause violence. In fact, it gives chance
to parents to understand their children through lyrics of music, and provide children with proper
guidance, if they are going on wrong path. Moreover, "Recording company executives constantly
make choices not to put out certain songs or albums because they don't meet the test of artistic
credibility or they believe something is sensationalist but empty of meaning. But for record

Adorno's Critique Of Popular Music And Capitalism Analysis
Throughout history, music has been seen as a medium in which different people all over the world
can relate. Adorno criticizes, however, that songs that have the most "hits" on the top music charts or
are most listened to, otherwise known as popular music, are being produced for and consumed by
the masses as a commodity. He identifies popular music as being a part of a culture used for
capitalism, and that we as listeners, are falling into a trap in which we believe songs have
individuality and that we have the freedom to choose what we listen to. He argues that in reality
these popular songs are all standardized and made to seem different through various elements that
are added. In this paper, I will display how Adorno's critique of popular music being used for
capitalism applies to the song,1–800–273–8255, by hip–hop and rap artist Logic, through its
standardized elements in both its content and marketing; however, I will argue that although it
contains these elements, the audience is actively listening and responding to the song as it brings
awareness to mental health and suicide prevention that is changing and saving lives all around us. In
the hit hip–hop song, 1–800–273–8255, performed by Logic and featuring Alessia Cara and Khalid,
the audience is taken through the experience of someone who is contemplating suicide. The song
begins within the point of view of a person calling the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline (NSPL),
1–800–273–8255, which is sang by Logic.

Popular Music In The 1900's
The landscape of music completely changed from the beginning of the 20th century to the end of it.
It changed so immensely that if one were to try and compare the music from the beginning of the
1900's to the end it would be nearly impossible. There are a number of reasons for these changes,
but the most obvious would have to be a new infusion of thoughts and ideas that have really
changed music for the better. So with all that said the objective here will be to try to show some of
the similarities and the differences between some of the different genres of popular music
throughout the early to mid 20th century.

Thanks to technological innovations the price of recorded music dropped significantly. These lower
prices raised the public interest in music, and because of the new huge profit margins record
companies were finally able to spend money to promote artists these promoted artists were the first
of many hundreds of pop stars. The biggest of these early pop stars was Italian singer Frank Sinatra.
After seeing the profitability of this many record companies decided to manufacture their own pop
stars so to speak, meaning that they would take a relatively unknown artist who wasn't necessarily
the most talented and would promote them very heavily based on their looks, normally to teens and
preteens. This sub genre is called bubblegum pop, and the poster child for it would have to be the
band The Monkees. Around this same time period the genre of rock n roll was also gaining a
substantial amount of popularity. Rock can be described as a fusion of jazz, blues, and country. At
first white artists like Elvis Presley were the only ones garnering national acclaim for rock and roll.
However by 1959 many black artists like Fats Domino and Little Richard were seen as national
icons. The genre of rock and roll only grew larger as the decade turned, with that it also inspired
many sub genres one in particular being surf. Surf is rock that mostly made up of instrumentals, and

Popular Music In The 1920's
Music has been widely popular throughout America since the nation's creation, but ever since the
1920's, it has become a daily part of our culture. Over the decades, new genres have been created,
each as equally popular. Some examples would be jazz, blues, many kinds of rock, surf music, folk,
soul, country, funk, disco, electronic, and hip–hop. Without music, today's world would be very
different. That's why it's safe to say that music has heavily influenced American society over the
years. The beginning of popular music started with Jazz in the city of New Orleans. Around the year
of 1900, many of the brothels in the district of Storyville, located in New Orleans, were employing
low–income African–American musicians to play their music, ... Show more content on

The leaders of this genre were all white teenagers from poor southern backgrounds. The most iconic
artist of Rockabilly was Elvis Presley who moved from house to house, several times throughout his
childhood. Other famous Rockabilly artists included Johnny Cash, Carl Perkins, Buddy Holly, and
Jerry Lee Lewis. They all grew up poor and managed to combine the two most popular forms of
southern music, blues and country. In 1953, Sun Records, a declining R&B record label, ended up
finding Elvis Presley who instantly became a star due to the fact that he was the first white man who
perfected singing the R&B genre. He soon gained a massive fanbase of teenage girls who tore apart
his clothes after every concert. Even most African–American teens loved him. One of the reasons
teenage girls loved him so much was because of his famous hip and leg shaking. In 1956, Jerry Lee
Lewis, nicknamed "The Killer", joined Sun Records where he combined R&B with country on
piano. At first he wasn't very successful, but then he appeared on The Steve Allen Show on July 28,
1957 where he ended up kicking the piano stool into the audience while shaking his hair and
banging on the keys like a madman. After that, he ended up topping the charts with "Great Balls of
Fire". Carl Perkins, whose music was very similar to Elvis', was possibly the greatest Rockabilly
guitarist of the time. Known for his hit, "Blue Suede Shoes", he almost became as famous as Elvis.
Though this all changed when he got into a car accident on March 22, 1956 where he broke his
collarbone, thus putting his career on hold. After this, Elvis recorded a popular version of "Blue
Suede Shoes" and Perkins seemed to fade away, being more known for his songwriting than for his
performing. The fourth Sun Records Rockabilly star was Johnny Cash, who served in the U.S. Air
Force. Even Roy

Popular Music: The Creative Process Essay
The Oxford Dictionary defines creativity as "the use of imagination or original ideas to create
something; inventiveness". Stemming from this, the creative process is the way in which an
individual develops their creative ideas. Under this umbrella is improvisation and, in particular, free
improvisation (or free jazz). "Improvisation is about... truthfully responding to changing
circumstances, and about.... enjoying the process without straining to get a known result. It is about
creation." Creativity and improvisation come from deep within, almost decided by our
subconscious, only to be directed by conscious thought and the happenings around us at the given
time. "Even without thinking, [musicians] can make musical gestures that direct the ... Show more

I hold improvising close to me, and use it as a technique for creating original songs, and turning
cover songs into my own. When one improvises, they make choices that are unique to them, which
leads into the question of where ideas in improvising come from.
Singer–songwriter Matt Corby spoke about the idea that inspiration does not come from you, rather
"it's something that you channel. Song writing, being able to create something new, is a regurgitation
of everything that you have experienced musically in your entire life. Your ideas [are] just a product
of what you know and what you place value upon musically or artistically". Though he is speaking
more so about song writing, this especially resonates in improvisation, as the process is even more
free flowing and spontaneous than creating a song. In improvising, this concept of "the body acting
prior to thought" is key, however when taking part in free improvisation, it is often difficult to
continue coming up with different ideas and variation, and I feel I am often too similar and
somewhat predictable in my improvising. A musician's "personal conventions [can become] too
familiar" and it is often necessary to "search for a wider spectrum of ideas." I wanted to put myself
out of my comfort zone, in order to explore new things, and was able to do so in the workshops.
In one of the first free improvisation workshops I was given an image that looked like a string of

I will be using Bell Hook's book Feminism is for Everybody which is about the movement to end
sexism to help understand why men feel the need to degraded women in their music. Hook's talks
about patriarchal power which is general structure in which men have power over women (male
domination). "Males as a group have and do benefit the most from patriarchy, from the assumption
that they are superior to females and should rule over us. But those benefits have come with a price.
In return for all the goodies men receive from patriarchy, they are required to dominate women, to
exploit and oppress us, using violence if they must to keep patriarchy intact."(Hooks xi). Males
today are still part of this patriarchal culture, Many rap and hip hop songs are about men using
women and having control over them.

Different Types of popular music.
Music is all around us. We all grew up listening to some type of music. No one can really determine
when music began or which cultures had music first. There are stories of its origins that go back to
ancient times. "Popular music is music produced for and sold to a broad audience."(1) The types of
popular music we are going to look at are jazz, country–and–western music, rhythm–and–blues
music (R&B), rock music, and rap, also know as hip–hop.(1)
First, we will look at jazz. Jazz is a type of music that was first developed by African Americans
around the first decade of the 20th century. (2) It is believed that jazz originated in New Orleans.

also. "Rock–and–roll guitarist Chuck Berry established a style of playing in the late 1950s that
remains a great influence on rock music."(8) Jimi Hendrix, Eric Clapton, and Carlos Santana are a
few more rock musicians. One of my favorite rock groups is The Rolling Stones. "Closely
connected with youth culture, rock music and musicians have helped to establish new fashions,
forms of language, attitudes, and political views. However, rock music is no longer limited to an
audience of teenagers, since many current listeners formed their musical tastes during the golden
age of rock and roll. Similarly, while rock has historically encouraged new creative expressions, the
innovations of Chuck Berry, Elvis Presley, Bob Dylan, the Beatles, and Jimi Hendrix have defined a
tradition to which successive generations of musicians have repeatedly turned for inspiration."(8)

Adorno And Horkheimer's Views On Popular Music
I agree to some extent with Adorno and Horkheimer's views on popular music and culture industry. I
agree that popular music is indeed standardized and it has a uniform pattern which the music
industry has been following for the last decade or so. However, I don't agree with their claim that
consumers are made to accept the exploitative situations they are in.
Adorno once said that popular music is standardized, even when it's made to be unique. He
explained that the most general and specific work of music were standardized with each chorus
consisting of thirty two bars with only limited range. (Adorno, 1941) To check if his claim was
correct, I listened to one of my favorite song Radioactive by Imagine Dragons and as I listen to the
song, I notice that the band repeats the chorus three times throughout the whole song and the only
thing different in the song were the lyrics between the choruses. We can take another song Wings by
Little Mix into account. The band's main chorus starts from the beginning, unlike the previous band
mentioned, and they start by singing
Mama told me not to waste my life

after a number of line–up changes the band settled with Bon Scott on vocals, Mark Evans on bass

How Music Changed The Era Of Popular Music
Music used to be reasonable and inspiring, forging brotherhood, positive values and standards. On
the contrary, presently, music is mostly impulsive, selling the wrong perception of love, ridden with
corrupt values, and produced mainly for fame and fortune. Popular music can be defined not only as
meaningful music but what help shaped our nation today. Music tends to relate to peoples emotion
and what's going on in our society today. Some would say, popular music stands in contrast to both
art and traditional music. Popular music, gave people hopes and dreams. Tim Pan Alley, changed the

Music has been around for ages, and has seen many different faces and many different styles. In
today's age, people don't really listen to music or remember music that happened before the 1960s.
In this time period, the emergent style of music was called rock and roll, thins music was new and
inventive, and something no one had really seen before. It featured electric guitars, loud songs, and a
whole new era of talented and innovative musicians. Some would argue that the 1960s and 70s were
the best years our world has seen musically. Today, music is much different than it was 40 and 50
years ago. Hip–hop, pop, and rap have emerged as leading styles of music, and most instruments
have been omitted. These two, extremely different eras of music both have fan bases of their own
today. I am going to tell you why one of these styles is a lot better, in both the pleasure of listening,
and musical ability. Popular music of the 60s and 70s is far superior then the popular music of today

Popular Music And Folk Music
Every culture has some tradition of music. Music is a part of both folk and popular culture
traditions, it can be utilized to illustrate the differences in the origin, diffusion, and distribution of
folk and popular culture. Music reflects a country's ethnic population through a diverse array of
styles. Folk and popular music shows the distinction in people's everyday lives. The more developed
a country is the more likely that MDC will have popular music and the less developed a country is
the more likely that LDC will have folk music. Folk music and Popular music have to do mainly
with a country's economic social and cultural status.
Folk songs tell a story or convey information about daily activities such as farming, life–cycle
events (birth, death, and marriage), or mysterious events such as storms and earthquakes. Folk music
has origins dating back to 2697 BC in china, when the Emperor Huang Ti sent Ling Lun to cut
bamboo poles that would produce a sound matching the call of the phoenix bird. In reality, folk
songs are usually composed anonymously and transmitted orally. A song may be modified from one
generation to the next as conditions change, but the content is most often derived from events in
daily life that are familiar to the majority of the people. In Vietnam, where most people are
subsistence farmers, information about agricultural technology is conveyed through folk songs. An
example of folk music is the music of Jamaica. Mento draws from many of Jamaica's

Abstract:
The essay examines evolution of popular music, experiences and how the public understood it
between 1918 and 1939. During this period, a national culture dance was developed in England.
Evolution process was marked with transformation of popular dance forms, affordable and easily
dances places and a national wide dancing practice. Evolvement of a dance culture was instrumental
in creation of a national identity. People understood what it meant to be British. There was an
English style of ballroom dancing, thematic content such as the popular Lambeth walk. To reduce
American influence on English music, British ballroom dancers tried to create British music free of
American influence. Through adaptation of different dancing styles, they presented what they
believed to be the real British identity. Introduction: In the words of Victor Sylvester, ballroom
dancing was an activity which could not be cut off or separated from the world; it was an activity
which was influenced by surrounding occurrences. Change in occasions such as fashion, war music
and social upheavals all played an important role in influencing the dancing scene. He observed that
external forces influenced performance as well as evolution of dancing (Sylvester, 1927). Rather
than concentrating how dancing was influenced by occurrences such as war or change of fashion,

Music : The Causes And Effects Of Modern Popular Music
Music of this generation has been thought to be worse than other generations. There is always the
argument that music has gotten worse, and both sides have equally strong evidence. Modern popular
music has gotten worse, and that has always been the case, however there are a plethora of other
genres and styles of music that still carry that authenticity and creativeness that we're missing. Most
of the reason for lack of creativity in music is corporate greed. Large companies like to release less
inspired songs because they bring in the largest profits. There is still good music in the world, it's
just a lot harder to find. Music should have creativity and authenticity, and that's something indie
music has that popular music doesn't. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
What's popular is music that makes money, and a lot of people in the music industry don't want to
let go of their figures to experiment with something that could have even more potential and bring
back what we're lacking in modern music. Pop music has become bland and emotionless to appeal
to the lowest common denominator. Pop music has always big the big deal, trying to sell to the
public and be used for profit. Recently, however, major record labels such as Warner Music Group,
Sony Music, and EMI have found it possible to make the maximum amount of money per song.
According to Pollock (2015) "Thanks to unprecedented data from YouTube, Spotify, Shazam and
even Wikipedia, the industry can see not only what listeners like, but also when, where and on what
platform they like it." (para. 3) This new information allows record labels to gauge what music
people like the most so that they can release more of that music. Another way they're controlling
what becomes popular is by using that application called "HitPredictor" which can accurately
predict most of what a year's top hits will be. These labels use this information to create more
watered down, uninspired version of pre–existing songs because that music is what happens to be
popular. This music is also what labels like to produce as well because it's cheap and easy to

garnered over 2 billion views and counting on YouTube. The genre of this ever so popular song is
K–Pop or Korean Popular Music which was virtually unknown to most before the "Gangnam Style"

Style." I have been listening to K–Pop now for about 5 years and it has brought me the utmost joy to
my life, introducing me to many things culturally and linguistically throughout Asia such as being
able to pick up and understand certain words and phrases. My love for the K–Pop genre is quite
great, on May 21, 2012 I went to a K–Pop concert in Mountain View, California, my iTunes music

Popular Music And Its Influence On Music
Lastly, I would like to address how popular music controls us to favor popular music. Rather than
allowing us to listen to different types of music, such as country music or punk music, popular
music conforms us to only listen to the music that is only composed by well–known artists. Popular
music restricts us from listening to other songs that are not popular, thus determining what popular
music is. First off, what makes popular music popular? The reason to bring this question up is to
remind all consumers that record companies have nicely packaged all the popular music before it
gets released on the radio, television, or the Internet, making sure that only music produced by
record labels can only be popular. All the popular music that is ... Show more content on

We often are so focused on what is playing currently, rather than what other choices we have.
Regardless of how many artists there are, record label companies are there to filter out all the pros
and cons in each artists, making sure everything that goes out to the public can gain the audiences'
attention. A great example is how Ariana Grande "started out in showbiz as a fresh–faced kid who
looked like a butter would not melt in her mouth. Now she is fast becoming known as the girl with
the big ponytail, and the big voice" (White, 2014). As she started to become more well known, she
started becoming looking more like a sweet girl and stepping away from dressing in cutting edge
style. After Ariana Grande has signed with Republic Records label in 2013, she has immediately
released several albums and become one of the top artists in 2014. Also, because record labels have
such great influences within the music industry, it is definitely easier to get the public's attention
through getting promoted by record labels rather than having to singers to promote themselves.
Ultimately, record labels contribute a big part in the music industry. Furthermore, Nancy explains in

Analysis of Popular Music Charts
In order to determine whether a song is popular or not many people consult one of the various
popular music charts. However, do these so called 'popular music charts' accurately depict what is
considered to be popular? By thoroughly analyzing the methods of accessing the popularity of
music, Billboard Magazine uses in their top 25 dance/electronic songs for November 30th –
December 7th, 2013 this paper aims to discover whether or not popular music charts are the best
implication of what is to be considered popular. The analysis will critically examine the contents of
the chart in order to explain whether or not the methods Billboard used, accurately depict the
popularity of these songs. Whilst exposing the possible effect of using such measures of popularity.
As well, the analysis will discuss the idea of quality in relation to popularity and how the two ideas
don't always mean the same thing. According to Hinds when determining popularity "one of two
variables is used: how many were bought or viewed, or how many dollars were spent on sales or
rentals." (pp. 373) Seeing as Billboard explains that the songs are ranked by a combination of "radio
airplay audience impressions as measured by Nielsen BDS, sales data as compiled by Nielsen
SoundScan, streaming activity data by online music sources tracked by Nielsen BDS and reports
from a national sample of club DJs" (Billboard, 2013). This statement holds true for Billboard

The Role Of Popular Music In The Infantilization Of Women
Music can help change lives, heal wounds, or unfortunately, create stigmas. We live in a world that
stigmatizes women on a daily basis, and the music industry plays no less of a significant role in
reinforcing some of those stigmas. One apparent stigma that the current music industry is promoting
is the infantilization of women. Infantilization is the act of treating an adult as a child, and thus
denying her or his maturity. Equating women with children, and treating them as if they are weak
and dependent is something we can clearly see in pop music. Whether it was through presenting
women in infantilized positions in music videos or using infantilizing terms in lyrics, pop music
plays a big role in shaping our inaccurate perception of women. ... Show more content on

Then, I will present the results in graphs and tables and discuss them. I plan to split my discussion
into two parts parallel to the survey's parts. I predict that the participants would describe the women
in the infantilized song lyrics and music videos as childlike and dependent. If my prediction was
true, I would use the discussion parts to explain the powerfulness of music in shaping the perception
of women in our society. In my discussion, I will incorporate the findings of Huot's and Carlson's
research that go along with my predicted finding. I will also use the examples of the infantilization
of women in pop culture that are shown in "The Codes of Gender;" a documentary film, written and
directed by Sut Jhally, that focuses on the American's pop culture role in shaping the stereotypical
ideas about femininity and masculinity. Also in this section, I will discuss other effects that resulted
from the infantilization of women in music. I will use Alanna Vagianos's Huffington post article
"Drake's 'Hotline Bling' Just Got A Genius Feminist Makeover," to help me provide an example. In
this article, Vagianos presents the story of a 27–year–old woman named Javetta Laster who was
affected by the infantilizing lyrics of the hit song "Hotline Bling," and decided to rewrite the lyrics
in a more accurate way. One example of Laster's rewritten lyrics shows how the original one was
presenting an infantilized look of women; the original lyric says: "Why you never alone? Why you
always touching road? Used to stay at home, be a good girl. You was in the zone, yeah," while
Laster's edited feminist version of the same lyric says: "You used to stay at home and be someone I
saw fitting into the patriarchal expectations of women to be infantilized good 'girls' which is some
bizarre father/daughter husband/wife dynamic left over from women being considered adult children
& property." Laster's rewritten

research focuses on the Irish immigrant and Irish–American presence in the music production of Tin

In this thesis, there is an overarching theme of the expression of Irish identity (or "Irishness")
through music, be it in Ireland or America. As ethnomusicologist, Martin Stokes claims in regards to
performance and place, "amongst countless ways we 'relocate' ourselves, music undoubtedly has a
vital role to play" (Stokes 1994, p. 3). Tangentially, I am responding to the call in ethnomusicology–
from scholars such as Bruno Nettl, Timothy Rice, Jonathan McCollum, and David G. Hebert, to
name a few–to approach my research with an historical ethnomusicological perspective. The
approach to historical ethnomusicology is less about ethnographic work and more about embracing
various methods of research from multiple academic fields (ranging from humanities to social
sciences). It appears that often times even in contemporary research, scholars must take a semi–
historical approach to at least inform themselves of how the music they are studying came to be.
Due to the nature of my research topic, I utilize the multi–method research approach from historical
ethnomusicology, such as collecting historical data from archives, libraries, and oral history. I also
interpret musical documents and iconography from publishing from the around the turn of the

Jazz and soulful music was made popular around the 1920s. Jazz music originated in New Orleans
when traditional African music and European music was combined. Jazz is notoriously for having a

R&B also has jazz and gospel linked into it. Instruments associated with this type of music were
drums, bass, piano, and guitar. R&B tackled a problem and told a story singers more ruthless and

drawn because of the upbeat and funky tunes. For example, Tina Turner had many great songs
ranging from heartbreak to lovesick accentuating the plethora of topics involved with R&B. More
on the risky side of R&B was Marvin Gaye. Being the soulful and R&B artist he was opened up
space for him to share his deep down feelings while still tugging on the heart strings. He opened up
the floor for musicians to genuinely be themselves no matter the risk considering how genuine,
personal, and carefree his music was. R&B has changed from being slow and peaceful to upbeat and

Essay on Popular Music Revolution
Music has undergone many changes throughout and history and prehistory. These changes were
always somehow connected to sociological movements at the time. Rock music evolved mostly out
of a need by young people of the fifties to break away from so–cietal norms. America had just come
out of the Korean War, and men looked to settle down into a peaceful life. Also just prior this time
period, Senator Joseph McCarthy ac–tively encouraged citizens to conform with his infamously
false accusations of Commu–nism. "McCarthy spectacularly charged that there were scores of
known Communists in the Department of State" (Bailey 887). This made people fearful that they

Although this emphasis on a driving beat originally sprung from R&B, it quickly mutated into
its own unique form. This presuma–bly was to facilitate dancing to the beat, and this became the
reason many parents and other adults protested this type of music. Many performers' onstage
dancing styles were considered "lewd and inappropriate for their children." This became another
reason for the music's popularity because they were given a chance to rebel against their parents.
There is nothing prohibiting a situation like this from happening again. Today, teenagers in general
strive to become different from their parents. This causes new styles to emerge in music. The most
common deviation form the main rock theme is vulgarity in lyrics. Sublime, a popular alternative
rock band, has quickly found success with the teenage audience. The two most played songs on their
first album, 40 oz. To Freedom, being "Date Rape" and "Smoke Two Joints." The lyrics reflect the
tendency of youth to rebel against laws and authority. "I smoke two joints in time of peace, and two
in time of war/ I smoke two joints before I smoke two joints/and then I smoke two more." This is an
ob–vious attempt to aggravate the attitudes of parents, and although added vulgarities and drug
references do not constitute a new form of music, under extreme circumstances, the conventions
could deviate enough to allow something new to emerge.

Censorship Of Popular Music
Music trends have changed and evolved throughout history to lead up to the music trends of today.
Though, some say that popular music has actually devolved in the sense of content and purpose.
Most notably, people often say that popular music is much too inappropriate and should be censored
or monitored. But if this is done, then free expression is lost and it could even impede on the basic
human right of freedom of speech. For this being a debatable issue, there is a very simple way to
resolve it; simply don't listen to it if you don't like it. It is after all, within an individual's control to
monitor what music they do or don't listen to. This popular kind of music is how people express

is a good example of how ridiculous it is to censor music. For one, it is the responsibility of parents
to monitor what content their kids are exposed to. If a parent sincerely doesn't want their kid
exposed to certain things, then they would take the necessary precautions to do so. For those who

viewpoint in society. Besides, music is breaking down into five main categories: Jazz, Classical,

through YouTube. As most K–Pop videos are freely available on YouTube, they are accessible to a
multitude of viewers worldwide. This in turn has facilitated the ubiquity of K–Pop music
consumption though social media among individuals, on a global scale which Huat and Jung (2014,
p.41) illustrates with example to the Indonesian youth. This however is not limited to Asia, as Sung
(2014) shows how K–Pop and its popularity and participatory fan culture have spread quickly
beyond Asia and have gained fans in America as well as European countries such as Austria. The
dimensions with which K–Pop has spread worldwide within a media environment is noted through
studies done by Jin & Yoon (2014) and Jung (2014). Such research show how a wide range of fans
from all over the world embrace this Korean pop culture through

Music Is The Most Popular Genres Of Music Essay
Music has been found in every culture in present time, as well as in the past, dating back almost
55,000 years (citation), with roots in Africa. Music is one of the most basic art forms and is a way of
life for many; a means of expression relative to emotions, culture, and one's self. Music is all around
us and it's hard to imagine going one day without listening to some variety of music. Music has
evolved tremendously from prehistoric times today, but one thing's stayed the same – one culture's
music is influenced by the culture as a whole. The period in history directly influences the style and
genre of music. For example, in the mid–1930's, during the Great Depression, Swing music became
one of the most popular genres of music, because it created an upbeat vibe, which created pleasure
and happiness that hadn't been felt due to the Great Depression. Through music, the American
population was able to experience a sense of joy that was otherwise absent during that period in
history. The brain is an astonishing organ of the human body, comprising the majority of the central
nervous system. The brain has great control over functions of the body, as a whole. The brain allows
for thoughts and actions to be executed on a daily basis. Fundamental functions of the brain include
instincts, emotions, behavior, and concepts (Perlovsky, 2012). Further, the brain constantly develops
and transforms, according to one's environment (nurture vs. nature), behavior, and brain injury.

The Popular Music Industry

  • 1. The Popular Music Industry In this article, Peterson and Berger show how the organization of the popular music industry affects the music that America hears. Popular Music Industry The innovation and diversity that marked popular music during the 1960s was due to a major change in the organization of the industry. Peterson and Berger concluded from their study that innovation and diversity depend on the extent on the degree of market concentration. They argued that "high market concentration leads to homogeneity and standardization, while low market concentration leads to innovation and diversity (Lopes, 1992.)." I agree that if the market concentration is high in popular music, then music will be the same. The music will not be different and creative. However, Burnett and Weber partially confirmed the prediction of increasing market concentration, but stated that the trends in diversity had a new dynamic of equilibrium in the popular music industry. Peterson and Berger decided to focus on the singles that reached the Top Ten on the weekly Billboard Hot 100 Singles chart from 1948 to 1973. The music industry's control of the production and consumption was measured. They measured innovation and diversity in various ways; they used ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Rap blends funk pulse with rhymed streetwise narrative. "New Wave and Rap music made significant inroads into the popular music market in the United States during the 1980s (Lopes,1992.)." Popular Music As Vehicle Of Popular Culture POPULAR MUSIC AS VEHICLE OF POPULAR CULTURE, WITH SPECIAL REFERENCE TO CONTEMPORARY MIZO CULTURE By Lalven Sanga INTRODUCTION The rapid growth of communication and development of media brought about changes to the human culture and societies. The study of culture is more complex than ever before. Richard H. Robbins says, "In cultural anthropology, as in every science, we strive to look beyond the world of everyday experiences to discover the patterns and meanings that lie behind that world." What lies behind the force and development of contemporary culture of the Mizo – how popular music can serve as an elements or a sub culture of the global popular culture, is what I seek to find here. Due to the advancement of technologies and mass communication system that reaches almost every corner of Mizoram, it is important to research on the media that is significant to the Mizo culture. In this research, I look at the backgrounds, definitions, anthropological approaches for my thesis, and how popular music and popular culture interacts in Mizo culture. I. DIMENSION OF CROSS–CULTURAL ANTHROPOLOGY AND POPULAR MUSIC Ted C. Lewis says, "The emerging anthropology of globalization represents a convergence of a number of interlinked changes in the anthropologist's scholarship, especially in subject matter, theory, the conceptualization of culture, and the ways that data are collected and analyzed." Music Analysis: Popular Mexican Music Richard Laws MUSI–2743–001 Howard Goldstein 27 July 2015 Popular Mexican Music While the music in Mexico has evolved over the years, it has successfully remained true to its roots and traditions of typical Mexican music. Influenced by a diverse range of cultures, the music in Mexico has been molded by early Europeans, original natives of Mexico, and the modern–day industries of the United States, as well. Popular music in Mexico includes genres of Pop, Banda, Tejano, and Latin Alternative. The ability to appreciate music at its fullest extent comes with the responsibility to be knowledgeable of different cultures and their music. However, in many cases the music they produced, if only by altering it in small ways, was creating a new hybrid...they started the process of interpreting foreign music through local idioms'" (Holston 2). A Latin alternative band from Mexico City named, "Los de Abajo" or "The Underdogs" are a prime example of this genre of music as their music includes many different types of sounds and uses influences from many distinct cultures. Holston describes this band as being "an example of modem rock en espanol as its best with aggressive lyrics and solid elements of salsa, son, and cumbia" (2). • 13. Modern Music And Its Impact On Popular Music Popular music is an example of what cultural industries produce and also what Theodor Adorno criticizes in his essay, On Popular Music. Theodor Adorno is a German philosopher, socialist, and also a composer. He analyzes popular music with the perspective not only from music, but also from the economic system based on Marx's idea. This paper first discusses his theory about popular music, including three important key terms and then how he develops this theory based on Marxism. Further, this paper will also apply Adorno's theory to a Disney movie, Frozen in order to evaluate his theory. By comparing popular music with serious music, Theodor Adorno makes a theory that criticizes popular music, suggesting three key words to describe characteristics of popular music: standardization, pseudo–individualization, and social cement. In other words, because of these characteristics, Adorno thinks popular music as inferior to serious music. The first and the primary characteristic of popular music, standardization means that popular music is assimilated to successful music in both structure and content (Adorno 73). As the example of the standardized structure, he mentions the chorus because it is standardized by the limit of one octave and one note with thirty–two bars. Not only is the whole structure including the chorus standardized, but also the content of popular music is standardized. Although he does not introduce examples in his essay, one of the standardized contents is about ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 17. Duke Ellington's Impact On Popular Music Considered one of the greatest jazz composers of all time. Duke Ellington had an enormous impact on the popular music in the late 1920s. For almost fifty years he toured the world as a bandleader and piano player. Today his recordings are among the most popular jazz of the big–band era. Born in Washington D.C. in 1899 Edward Kennedy Ellington was his name or better known as "Duke" began playing piano as a child. His mother who also played the piano saw his education and by the time he was seventeen he began playing professionally. Becoming a famous piano player in Washington D.C. Ellington started to make his own music. In 1922 he moved to New York and by 1923 he formed his own band called the Washingtonians. By 1926 Ellington's band had found a small amount of fans and started playing their music at Harlem's famous Cotton Club. This was to be a major turning point in his career, providing him with access to larger audiences through radio and recordings. The group grew larger in size in size and Ellington took the chance to be a leader in it. They played in what was called "jungle" style their slick arrangements often recognized by the sound of trumpeter James "Bubber" Miley. • 21. The Influence Of Jazz On American Popular Music When I started this course on American popular music, I was not sure what to expect. As the course went on, I became surprised by how much I have learned. This class has helped me explore many genres and learn how to analyze songs. My favorite genre that was explored during this course is jazz. While understanding the roots of jazz, towards the end of the course, I observed how I listened to music differently. Jazz has always been one of my favorite genres. Jazz feels very expressive and allows the musician to share their heart with the audience, this is one of the reasons it is one of my favorite genres. My experience with music has been through dance, and dancing to jazz is something I've always enjoyed. One characteristic of jazz is improvisation, which allows the musician the chance to create their own melodic lines. In dance, we create our own movements to the tune and it is always a great experience to have two expressive hearts come together to express one tune. Since jazz has such a special place in my heart, I truly enjoyed learning the roots of jazz. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... These ragtime players had huge influence on jazz. The makeup includes the front–line, which include musicians with lead parts, playing cornets or trumpets, clarinets, and trombones. The rhythm section includes the piano, banjo, and percussion. Synthesizers, keyboards, and keytars were all common instruments in popular music in the 1980s. Many rock, hip–hop, and pop musicians incorporated or relied heavily on these instruments for back beats. These instruments lost popularity during the 1990s and early 2000s. In fact, during that time musicians using keytars were often not taken seriously. But in today's pop scene, popular artists such as Lady Gaga and LMFAO are openly playing keytars, and are all the more popular because of it. By the mid–1960's, however, rock dominated the music industry, and it remains one of the most important divisions of popular music" When the pioneers started searching for a new sound of music and found one, what they had found was rock. This is the how rock music started and by the mid–1960's it had officially dominated the music industry and still remains as one of the most popular divisions of music. "The 1960's became a time of peak creativity for rock music, which earned wide respect as a legitimate art form. Rock blossomed into many new styles and sounds. By the mid–1960's, rock music had become the dominant form of popular music". This shows how the rock genre started to branch off in ways such as people starting different types of rock such as hard rock and more people started listening to it. Authenticity In Popular Music Authenticity in popular music has been an area of discussion since Elvis (Moore 2002 as cited by Gunders 2013) and the meaning and subsequent significance of it within popular music is an area of much contention. Some scholars suggest the term be disregarded as problematic, ultimately meaningless and irrelevant (Gunders 2013) however while there are differing opinions over the importance of authenticity in popular music, its existence within the industry cannot be questioned. "Genre can basically be defined as a category or type" (Shuker pp 95) and is a central aspect of popular music studies. It acts as a set of rules, identifying music as sharing a certain style or set of conventions. Defining authenticity in music is a difficult process ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... John writes songs infused with his personality (Frith 2001) and establishes authenticity by allowing his listeners to identify with him and his music. He establishes a connection with listeners by creating songs that resonate with them, songs with feelings that are easily transferred to their own lives, consequently allowing them to take part in his music (Frith 2001). The song 'Candle in the Wind ' is an example of this. As Frith discusses, "what the audience applauded [in Candle in the Wind] was not John's actual feeling of grief but his ability to provide a performance of grief in which we as listeners could take part." (Frith 2001, pp 94.) Similarly, The Spice Girls achieved a "girl–next–door" (Leach 2001 pp149) authenticity by promoting audience identification. They wrote songs with relatable messages about love, friendship and jealousy, establishing authenticity by allowing their music to resonate with their audience. Taylor Swift is a recent musician to achieve authenticity in this manner. Swift writes honest, personal songs about "commonplace feelings [of] love, loss and jealousy" (Frith 2001 pp 96), inserting her own experiences into the music and allowing for greater audience identification. She seems like a childhood friend, approachable and genuine because of the relatable content of her music. Her music seems to express some of our own experiences and thoughts, which differs from the methods employed in rock. • 41. Negative Effects Of Popular Music The Inimical Side To Popular Song Lyrics One reason why popular music poses threats is because it influences young children with villainous intentions. In a world where rap is one of the most popular genres of music for its rebellious and materialistic nature, young people can not help but be influenced by their favorite artist's actions. Rap glorifies illegal activities as a way of expression and a way to get rich quick. Rap or any genre of music for that matter is extremely influential in almost anything people do from slang, fashion, and even culture. Many famous rap songs are centered around the artists wealth and or clout; owning an expensive watch, having a fast car, and disrespecting women is very common in various songs throughout the music industry whether it be pop, rap, or rock. Explicit music lyrics are destructive to a child's development and expose children to criminal acts. Another detrimental side of rap is it's extensive use of profanity and lack of leadership. Use of colorful language in rap is what makes the genre rebellious and appealing to easily influenced children, but it's unneeded there are plenty of other artists that get their message across without the use of profanity. The use of profanity is a touchy subject and is something most parents do not want their children to hear it's vulgar and disrespectful but when a teenager hears it in their favorite song it's forever burnt into their vocabulary. Most rappers do not leave a good message in ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

In defence of music and music industry Rosen says, "It's true that the most controversial lyrics in popular music reflect the violence and despair in an artist's imagination or in society. But they reflect it–they don't create it" (82). Therefore, music does not cause violence. In fact, it gives chance to parents to understand their children through lyrics of music, and provide children with proper guidance, if they are going on wrong path. • 49. Adorno's Critique Of Popular Music And Capitalism Analysis Throughout history, music has been seen as a medium in which different people all over the world can relate. Adorno criticizes, however, that songs that have the most "hits" on the top music charts or are most listened to, otherwise known as popular music, are being produced for and consumed by the masses as a commodity. He identifies popular music as being a part of a culture used for capitalism, and that we as listeners, are falling into a trap in which we believe songs have individuality and that we have the freedom to choose what we listen to. He argues that in reality these popular songs are all standardized and made to seem different through various elements that are added. In this paper, I will display how Adorno's critique of popular music being used for capitalism applies to the song,1–800–273–8255, by hip–hop and rap artist Logic, through its standardized elements in both its content and marketing; however, I will argue that although it contains these elements, the audience is actively listening and responding to the song as it brings awareness to mental health and suicide prevention that is changing and saving lives all around us. In the hit hip–hop song, 1–800–273–8255, performed by Logic and featuring Alessia Cara and Khalid, the audience is taken through the experience of someone who is contemplating suicide. The song begins within the point of view of a person calling the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline (NSPL), 1–800–273–8255, which is sang by Logic. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 53. Popular Music In The 1900's The landscape of music completely changed from the beginning of the 20th century to the end of it. It changed so immensely that if one were to try and compare the music from the beginning of the 1900's to the end it would be nearly impossible. There are a number of reasons for these changes, but the most obvious would have to be a new infusion of thoughts and ideas that have really changed music for the better. So with all that said the objective here will be to try to show some of the similarities and the differences between some of the different genres of popular music throughout the early to mid 20th century. Early on in the 20th century the predominant form of popular music were definitely musicals, and there was no bigger stage than that ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Thanks to technological innovations the price of recorded music dropped significantly. These lower prices raised the public interest in music, and because of the new huge profit margins record companies were finally able to spend money to promote artists these promoted artists were the first of many hundreds of pop stars. The biggest of these early pop stars was Italian singer Frank Sinatra. After seeing the profitability of this many record companies decided to manufacture their own pop stars so to speak, meaning that they would take a relatively unknown artist who wasn't necessarily the most talented and would promote them very heavily based on their looks, normally to teens and preteens. This sub genre is called bubblegum pop, and the poster child for it would have to be the band The Monkees. Around this same time period the genre of rock n roll was also gaining a substantial amount of popularity. Rock can be described as a fusion of jazz, blues, and country. At first white artists like Elvis Presley were the only ones garnering national acclaim for rock and roll. • 57. Popular Music In The 1920's Music has been widely popular throughout America since the nation's creation, but ever since the 1920's, it has become a daily part of our culture. Over the decades, new genres have been created, each as equally popular. Some examples would be jazz, blues, many kinds of rock, surf music, folk, soul, country, funk, disco, electronic, and hip–hop. Without music, today's world would be very different. That's why it's safe to say that music has heavily influenced American society over the years. The beginning of popular music started with Jazz in the city of New Orleans. Around the year of 1900, many of the brothels in the district of Storyville, located in New Orleans, were employing low–income African–American musicians to play their music, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The leaders of this genre were all white teenagers from poor southern backgrounds. The most iconic artist of Rockabilly was Elvis Presley who moved from house to house, several times throughout his childhood. Other famous Rockabilly artists included Johnny Cash, Carl Perkins, Buddy Holly, and Jerry Lee Lewis. They all grew up poor and managed to combine the two most popular forms of southern music, blues and country. In 1953, Sun Records, a declining R&B record label, ended up finding Elvis Presley who instantly became a star due to the fact that he was the first white man who perfected singing the R&B genre. He soon gained a massive fanbase of teenage girls who tore apart his clothes after every concert. Even most African–American teens loved him. One of the reasons teenage girls loved him so much was because of his famous hip and leg shaking. In 1956, Jerry Lee Lewis, nicknamed "The Killer", joined Sun Records where he combined R&B with country on piano. At first he wasn't very successful, but then he appeared on The Steve Allen Show on July 28, 1957 where he ended up kicking the piano stool into the audience while shaking his hair and banging on the keys like a madman. After that, he ended up topping the charts with "Great Balls of Fire". Carl Perkins, whose music was very similar to Elvis', was possibly the greatest Rockabilly guitarist of the time. Known for his hit, "Blue Suede Shoes", he almost became as famous as Elvis. Though this all changed when he got into a car accident on March 22, 1956 where he broke his collarbone, thus putting his career on hold. After this, Elvis recorded a popular version of "Blue Suede Shoes" and Perkins seemed to fade away, being more known for his songwriting than for his performing. Stemming from this, the creative process is the way in which an individual develops their creative ideas. Under this umbrella is improvisation and, in particular, free improvisation (or free jazz). "Improvisation is about... truthfully responding to changing circumstances, and about.... enjoying the process without straining to get a known result. It is about creation." Creativity and improvisation come from deep within, almost decided by our subconscious, only to be directed by conscious thought and the happenings around us at the given time. I hold improvising close to me, and use it as a technique for creating original songs, and turning cover songs into my own. When one improvises, they make choices that are unique to them, which leads into the question of where ideas in improvising come from. Singer–songwriter Matt Corby spoke about the idea that inspiration does not come from you, rather "it's something that you channel. Song writing, being able to create something new, is a regurgitation of everything that you have experienced musically in your entire life. Your ideas [are] just a product of what you know and what you place value upon musically or artistically". Though he is speaking more so about song writing, this especially resonates in improvisation, as the process is even more free flowing and spontaneous than creating a song. In improvising, this concept of "the body acting prior to thought" is key, however when taking part in free improvisation, it is often difficult to continue coming up with different ideas and variation, and I feel I am often too similar and somewhat predictable in my improvising. A musician's "personal conventions [can become] too familiar" and it is often necessary to "search for a wider spectrum of ideas." I wanted to put myself out of my comfort zone, in order to explore new things, and was able to do so in the workshops. I agree that popular music is indeed standardized and it has a uniform pattern which the music industry has been following for the last decade or so. However, I don't agree with their claim that consumers are made to accept the exploitative situations they are in. Adorno once said that popular music is standardized, even when it's made to be unique. He explained that the most general and specific work of music were standardized with each chorus consisting of thirty two bars with only limited range. (Adorno, 1941) To check if his claim was correct, I listened to one of my favorite song Radioactive by Imagine Dragons and as I listen to the song, I notice that the band repeats the chorus three times throughout the whole song and the only thing different in the song were the lyrics between the choruses. We can take another song Wings by Little Mix into account. Music is a part of both folk and popular culture traditions, it can be utilized to illustrate the differences in the origin, diffusion, and distribution of folk and popular culture. Music reflects a country's ethnic population through a diverse array of styles. Folk and popular music shows the distinction in people's everyday lives. I have been listening to K–Pop now for about 5 years and it has brought me the utmost joy to my life, introducing me to many things culturally and linguistically throughout Asia such as being able to pick up and understand certain words and phrases. My love for the K–Pop genre is quite great, on May 21, 2012 I went to a K–Pop concert in Mountain View, California, my iTunes music library has over 400 K–Pop songs, and have even began watching Korean dramas. Since discovering K–Pop I have become less and less interested in American pop music and am overall bored of its mainstream music. K–Pop music is heavily influenced by American music, but K–Pop brings a new freshness to the pop genre. I strongly believe that K–Pop is better than its American mainstream counterpart. To understand what K–Pop is one must know what certain vocabulary words mean when referring to K–Pop. Words such as "idol", "concept", "comeback", and "rookie groups" are a must know. An "idol" is what fans call a member of a K–Pop group, no ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 109. Popular Music And Its Influence On Music Lastly, I would like to address how popular music controls us to favor popular music. Rather than allowing us to listen to different types of music, such as country music or punk music, popular music conforms us to only listen to the music that is only composed by well–known artists. Popular music restricts us from listening to other songs that are not popular, thus determining what popular music is. First off, what makes popular music popular? The reason to bring this question up is to remind all consumers that record companies have nicely packaged all the popular music before it gets released on the radio, television, or the Internet, making sure that only music produced by record labels can only be popular. All the popular music that is ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... We often are so focused on what is playing currently, rather than what other choices we have. Regardless of how many artists there are, record label companies are there to filter out all the pros and cons in each artists, making sure everything that goes out to the public can gain the audiences' attention. A great example is how Ariana Grande "started out in showbiz as a fresh–faced kid who looked like a butter would not melt in her mouth. Now she is fast becoming known as the girl with the big ponytail, and the big voice" (White, 2014). As she started to become more well known, she started becoming looking more like a sweet girl and stepping away from dressing in cutting edge style. After Ariana Grande has signed with Republic Records label in 2013, she has immediately released several albums and become one of the top artists in 2014. Also, because record labels have such great influences within the music industry, it is definitely easier to get the public's attention through getting promoted by record labels rather than having to singers to promote themselves. Ultimately, record labels contribute a big part in the music industry. Furthermore, Nancy explains in "The Swedish Model: Balancing Markets and Gifts in the Music Industry," the "record labels have been the creative center for the global music industry, finding, developing, recording, and publishing the ... • 113. Analysis of Popular Music Charts In order to determine whether a song is popular or not many people consult one of the various popular music charts. However, do these so called 'popular music charts' accurately depict what is considered to be popular? By thoroughly analyzing the methods of accessing the popularity of music, Billboard Magazine uses in their top 25 dance/electronic songs for November 30th – December 7th, 2013 this paper aims to discover whether or not popular music charts are the best implication of what is to be considered popular. The analysis will critically examine the contents of the chart in order to explain whether or not the methods Billboard used, accurately depict the popularity of these songs. Whilst exposing the possible effect of using such measures of popularity. As well, the analysis will discuss the idea of quality in relation to popularity and how the two ideas don't always mean the same thing. According to Hinds when determining popularity "one of two variables is used: how many were bought or viewed, or how many dollars were spent on sales or rentals." (pp. 373) Seeing as Billboard explains that the songs are ranked by a combination of "radio airplay audience impressions as measured by Nielsen BDS, sales data as compiled by Nielsen SoundScan, streaming activity data by online music sources tracked by Nielsen BDS and reports from a national sample of club DJs" (Billboard, 2013). We live in a world that stigmatizes women on a daily basis, and the music industry plays no less of a significant role in reinforcing some of those stigmas. One apparent stigma that the current music industry is promoting is the infantilization of women. Infantilization is the act of treating an adult as a child, and thus denying her or his maturity. Equating women with children, and treating them as if they are weak and dependent is something we can clearly see in pop music. Whether it was through presenting women in infantilized positions in music videos or using infantilizing terms in lyrics, pop music plays a big role in shaping our inaccurate perception of women. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Then, I will present the results in graphs and tables and discuss them. I plan to split my discussion into two parts parallel to the survey's parts. I predict that the participants would describe the women in the infantilized song lyrics and music videos as childlike and dependent. If my prediction was true, I would use the discussion parts to explain the powerfulness of music in shaping the perception of women in our society. In my discussion, I will incorporate the findings of Huot's and Carlson's research that go along with my predicted finding. I will also use the examples of the infantilization of women in pop culture that are shown in "The Codes of Gender;" a documentary film, written and directed by Sut Jhally, that focuses on the American's pop culture role in shaping the stereotypical ideas about femininity and masculinity. Also in this section, I will discuss other effects that resulted from the infantilization of women in music. I will use Alanna Vagianos's Huffington post article "Drake's 'Hotline Bling' Just Got A Genius Feminist Makeover," to help me provide an example. In this article, Vagianos presents the story of a 27–year–old woman named Javetta Laster who was affected by the infantilizing lyrics of the hit song "Hotline Bling," and decided to rewrite the lyrics in a more accurate way. One example of Laster's rewritten lyrics shows how the original one was presenting an infantilized look of women; the original lyric says: "Why you never alone? Why you always touching road? Used to stay at home, be a good girl. You was in the zone, yeah," while Laster's edited feminist version of the same lyric says: "You used to stay at home and be someone I saw fitting into the patriarchal expectations of women to be infantilized good 'girls' which is some bizarre father/daughter husband/wife dynamic left over from women being considered adult children & property." American Popular Music Research Paper Who were the people that contributed to the musical life and industry in America–more specifically in vaudeville and Tin Pan Alley–during the 1880s to 1930s? Who created the music? Who performed on the stages and in recordings? Who helped to define American popular music? Some would say it was immigrant Jews. I would say it was immigrant Jews and immigrant Irish. My research focuses on the Irish immigrant and Irish–American presence in the music production of Tin Pan Alley and Vaudeville in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries and subsequently observing how the genre is being performed in Ireland today. Another component of this research focuses on how the Irish were and are represented in music and media circa one hundred years ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In this thesis, there is an overarching theme of the expression of Irish identity (or "Irishness") through music, be it in Ireland or America. As ethnomusicologist, Martin Stokes claims in regards to performance and place, "amongst countless ways we 'relocate' ourselves, music undoubtedly has a vital role to play" (Stokes 1994, p. 3). Tangentially, I am responding to the call in ethnomusicology– from scholars such as Bruno Nettl, Timothy Rice, Jonathan McCollum, and David G. Hebert, to name a few–to approach my research with an historical ethnomusicological perspective. The approach to historical ethnomusicology is less about ethnographic work and more about embracing various methods of research from multiple academic fields (ranging from humanities to social sciences). It appears that often times even in contemporary research, scholars must take a semi– historical approach to at least inform themselves of how the music they are studying came to be. Due to the nature of my research topic, I utilize the multi–method research approach from historical ethnomusicology, such as collecting historical data from archives, libraries, and oral history. I also interpret musical documents and iconography from publishing from the around the turn of the twentieth century. As well as managing a limited amount of ethnographic fieldwork, I also collected data from the general public, by employing modern ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Unlike today's hits, the music in the 90s was authentic, raw and diverse whereas, the popular music today is almost the polar opposite. Musicians and artists were getting famous for their music alone fusing a plethora of genres and new sounds that are pleasing to the ear. A prime example of why music was the best part of the 90s. Jazz and soulful music was made popular around the 1920s. Jazz music originated in New Orleans when traditional African music and European music was combined. Jazz is notoriously for having a strong base sound and addicting beat with instruments such as the trumpet or saxophone along with it. Singing jazz evoked emotion, passion, and self –expression. Instruments associated with this type of music were drums, bass, piano, and guitar. R&B tackled a problem and told a story singers more ruthless and risky with its lyrics. Artists were free to express themselves, however, they wanted and attention was drawn because of the upbeat and funky tunes. For example, Tina Turner had many great songs ranging from heartbreak to lovesick accentuating the plethora of topics involved with R&B. More on the risky side of R&B was Marvin Gaye. Being the soulful and R&B artist he was opened up space for him to share his deep down feelings while still tugging on the heart strings. He opened up the floor for musicians to genuinely be themselves no matter the risk considering how genuine, personal, and carefree his music was. • 129. Essay on Popular Music Revolution Music has undergone many changes throughout and history and prehistory. These changes were always somehow connected to sociological movements at the time. Rock music evolved mostly out of a need by young people of the fifties to break away from so–cietal norms. America had just come out of the Korean War, and men looked to settle down into a peaceful life. Also just prior this time period, Senator Joseph McCarthy ac–tively encouraged citizens to conform with his infamously false accusations of Commu–nism. "McCarthy spectacularly charged that there were scores of known Communists in the Department of State" (Bailey 887). This made people fearful that they would be tried as Communists and led most to conform to a common societal standard. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Although this emphasis on a driving beat originally sprung from R&B, it quickly mutated into its own unique form. This presuma–bly was to facilitate dancing to the beat, and this became the reason many parents and other adults protested this type of music. Many performers' onstage dancing styles were considered "lewd and inappropriate for their children." This became another reason for the music's popularity because they were given a chance to rebel against their parents. There is nothing prohibiting a situation like this from happening again. Today, teenagers in general strive to become different from their parents. This causes new styles to emerge in music. The most common deviation form the main rock theme is vulgarity in lyrics. Sublime, a popular alternative rock band, has quickly found success with the teenage audience. The two most played songs on their first album, 40 oz. To Freedom, being "Date Rape" and "Smoke Two Joints." The lyrics reflect the tendency of youth to rebel against laws and authority. "I smoke two joints in time of peace, and two in time of war/ I smoke two joints before I smoke two joints/and then I smoke two more." This is an ob–vious attempt to aggravate the attitudes of parents, and although added vulgarities and drug references do not constitute a new form of music, under extreme circumstances, the conventions could deviate enough to allow something new to emerge. ... Though, some say that popular music has actually devolved in the sense of content and purpose. Most notably, people often say that popular music is much too inappropriate and should be censored or monitored. But if this is done, then free expression is lost and it could even impede on the basic human right of freedom of speech. For this being a debatable issue, there is a very simple way to resolve it; simply don't listen to it if you don't like it. It is after all, within an individual's control to monitor what music they do or don't listen to. This popular kind of music is how people express themselves whether or not it is inappropriate. ... An article on Freemuse encouraged readers to "imagine a world where we are told what to play, what to sing and even what we may listen to in the privacy of our own homes." This statement is a good example of how ridiculous it is to censor music. For one, it is the responsibility of parents to monitor what content their kids are exposed to. If a parent sincerely doesn't want their kid exposed to certain things, then they would take the necessary precautions to do so. Jung & Shim (2014, pp.485) illustrate that following Psy's global success, other Korean pop music or K–Pop, have become one of the most vigorously distributed forms of pop culture globally, through its distribution via social networks. Hogarth (2013, pp.144) illustrates how K–Pop entertainment agencies have recognised the Internet as an important means of spreading this cultural product internationally, and now continuously launch K–Pop music videos through YouTube. As most K–Pop videos are freely available on YouTube, they are accessible to a multitude of viewers worldwide. This in turn has facilitated the ubiquity of K–Pop music consumption though social media among individuals, on a global scale which Huat and Jung (2014, p.41) illustrates with example to the Indonesian youth. This however is not limited to Asia, as Sung (2014) shows how K–Pop and its popularity and participatory fan culture have spread quickly beyond Asia and have gained fans in America as well as European countries such as Austria. • 153. Music Is The Most Popular Genres Of Music Essay Music has been found in every culture in present time, as well as in the past, dating back almost 55,000 years (citation), with roots in Africa. Music is one of the most basic art forms and is a way of life for many; a means of expression relative to emotions, culture, and one's self. Music is all around us and it's hard to imagine going one day without listening to some variety of music. Music has evolved tremendously from prehistoric times today, but one thing's stayed the same – one culture's music is influenced by the culture as a whole. The period in history directly influences the style and genre of music. For example, in the mid–1930's, during the Great Depression, Swing music became one of the most popular genres of music, because it created an upbeat vibe, which created pleasure and happiness that hadn't been felt due to the Great Depression. Through music, the American population was able to experience a sense of joy that was otherwise absent during that period in history.
