Introduction to ArtificiaI Intelligence in Higher Education
Job role unit 3
1. One job role that I want to pursue is being a music producer. Music Producers write,
arrange, produce, and record songs, whether they’re shaping the sound of another artist’s
album or creating beats or songs for their own projects. Music producers oversee all aspects
of a recording session, from planning the sessions to the finished product. As a music
producer, I’ll be responsible for providing instruments, scheduling studio time and handling
funding, costs, and negotiations. I’ll also work with and coach musicians. The end result of
this process is the creation and publication of a quality musical work. A major aspect of your
job as a music producer is creating quality sounds that match both the musicians' and
producers' plans.
I would like to get a bachelor’s degree in music or sign up for an apprenticeship at an
advanced company like Sony or red bull music studios because I’ll be able to develop my
skills and have good links and contacts to build up reputation and status.
Skills: to be a music producer you need to have a good ear for music. It helps to be able to
play an instrument especially the piano as recording studios usually have midi keyboards
rather than live instruments. You need to be able socialise with a lot of people who are from
different backgrounds and are from different social classes. You need to be able to read
music and understand several software’s such as FL studio and logic pro which are used
worldwide to create music.
Industries: I’m aspiring to work in the film industry as I want to make soundtracks and edit
music. However, I would also enjoy to produce music for musicians in the UK such as J Hus
and Giggs and eventually branch out to the US.
One music producer that has inspired me is DJ mustard as his career elevated so quickly and
his particular sound sent a new musical wave across the globe. There was intense pressure
on DJ Mustard as he wanted to transition from a music producer to label executive before
his 26th birthday. DJ Mustard started off as a DJ in Los Angeles which was his hometown.
Due to him living in LA he was heavily influenced by G-funk which is heard through his
melodies and instrumentation. He started to DJ for his friend and famous rapper YG in
2010.as time passed he was taught by another rapper you might have heard off called 'ty
dollar $ign' to produce beats. In 2011 at the age of 21 DJ mustard managed to breakthrough
into the mainstream music world with his nonchalant effort of producing Tyga's "Rack City"
which reached top 10 in the Billboards Hot 100 charts. After his breakthrough record he
gained attention from major record labels and artist and as time went by he extended his
music catalogue from hip-hop's stars such as Lil Wayne and Chris Brown. At one point in
2015 Mustard had 10 records on the radio at one time.
S.M.A.R.T Goals:
Specific - I want to have a salary of at least £30,000 a year however there are limitations as I
know that being a music producer there isn't always mainstream jobs available hence why
so many producers are self-employed. i want to produce music in the US as a feel that there
are more opportunities for the type of market I will entering. In the worst-case scenario, I
will have a low budget studio which I will rent out to other artist and work my way up the
ladder.
2. Measurable – my first target is to pass my current course that I study in college as this will
allow me to go to university and study more in depth about music and gain more knowledge
about the music industry. Furthermore, I think developing my ability to play instruments will
help in the long run so I will take piano lesson regularly.
Attainable – my goal is achievable however without large investments it will be extremely
hard to fund my career. An average studio can cost up to £100,000 as the essential
equipment like mixers and monitors that are a significant part of the overall piece is
expensive. One instrumental can take me hours to make therefore I will have to devote a lot
my time to my music this can have a negative impact as I may get bored and become anti-
social also my everyday will be on halt and I may become unhealthy and mentally stressed.
In this case I will have a routine to help me keep track of time.
Relevant – some may say that I'm a reserved character so fame would not be ideal for me
but in the case that I was famous I think I could overcome my shyness and deal with it just
fine. I want to achieve this as it is really the only thing I have a true passion for and it's
something that I have already spent a lot of time practicing and researching. Many people
have told me that I have a talent and I would be stupid not to pursuit it.
Timely – deadlines in music are extremely important as clients will consider you un-
professional if you don’t complete projects in time. Next year I hope to be in university
studying music hopefully getting a bachelors agree in the end. In the next five years I will
have a steady income and have a team of professionals who all have status.
Different types of contracts:
Signed by a record label:
the pros of being signed by a record label is that they fund your career for example they pay
for your studio time and travel expenses.
Another pro is that they will be able to communicate with other artist due to their links and
hopefully make a collaboration between you and them so your music catalogue looks even
better.
The final pro is that record labels are great for marketing your music as they have ties to
huge streaming services and music platforms like Spotify, apple music and Tidal which will
elevate your career even more as your music will potentially be heard globally.
On the other hand, the cons are that the label has complete control of you therefore your
independence and freedom is limited and if you rebel they will simply stop supporting your
career and you will have to go through hell to get of the contract.
Another con is that the label your signed to will take a percentage of all your profits so much
of your money will be divided and distributed to a team of many whereas if you were an
independent artist you would be in control of where your funds are going.
