Hello fellow producers at Interscope Records. I know that you
are in search of new talent from producers to artists that can
create new, unique music sequences and songs that will open
the doors to the future of the sound arts. I am definitely a
necessary element to add to your already finely tuned and
handsomely recognized organization. When founded in late
1990 by Jimmie Lovine and Ted Field the idea was to start a
label that could lead the industry through a major change in
sound and music as we know it. Not only did they do so, but
they predicted that change as well successfully building an
empire through new ideas in operations and creativity in the
production process. One of the many things I admire about
Interscope Records is giving artists full control over their own
4. crafts which I think is a big risk, but genius.
I resonate with this forward way of thinking because I’ve been
making music since I was 15 and went on to make many
different styles or genres of music. Ask yourself, what would
happen if everyone approached one problem with the same
views or thought processes? I think we all know what would
happen. Without that space and freedom to challenge your own
creativity, talent is not used to it’s full potential and new ideas
go undiscovered. Basically, you take away the what ifs and
taking away the what ifs hinders growth and evolution. Some of
the greatest discoveries have come from trying something
different or unusual.
I’m here to simply offer a unique ability to record, master and
produce not only synthesized chords, percussions, and kicks
that will capture the heads, hips, and hearts of artists and music
fans around the world, but also write and structure lyrics to
complete beautiful songs that will add not only credibility to
this company as one of Heavy hitters in this industry but also
add revenue. I also possess the ability to grow side by side with
the rapid change in this industry.
I envision some of the ways to do this are, always scouting for
new talent through using many different avenues to discover.
Working with a huge network of artists and producers with the
talent to make diverse tracks creating new age, almost
pioneering sounds. Working closely with individuals that aren’t
afraid to push the boundaries of change or try new ideas from
different genres of artists collaborating, to working with
individuals that consistently scout for new and effective ways to
create buzzes and sell our products.
I remember in my late teens me and a couple friends who shared
the same passion for making music formed a group called
“Critical Mindz”. There was D-boy, Chi Chi and I, and
everyone brought more than 1 talent to the table. I’m African
American of course, D-Boy is Caucasian, and Chi Chi is
Pilipino. I was a beat producer, writer, and rap artist. D-Boy
was a writer, rap artist and our sound engineer. Chi Chi was a
5. writer, singer and rap artist. Our genre of music was Hip Hop/
R&B. We were not your traditional group. When we first started
our dreams were to be offered a record deal. We believed that
even though it’s far-fetched, with hard work, dedication and
consistency, we could get past the adversity and people would
recognize that even though we look and sound different, we
definitely had talent and our differences would actually make us
more interesting. We all know how hard it can be to open a vast
number of people to different or new ideas. Almost one year
later we had created a fan base in our home town and
surrounding cities. We performed small venues and even opened
up a show for a famous comedian. By the end of that year our
talent had led us to a record deal with Dream Weaver
Entertainment. Unfortunately, we ended up turning down the
contract, but it was still a major victory for us. All of this
started with us making music out of D-Boy's basement. Now it
is very common to hear Hip Hop mixed with R&B. Without
today’s technology, without living in a major city, and having
the odds stacked against us for being very different in sound,
ethnicities and appearance we were successful at reaching that
goal that we set out for. We were different. Difference brings
change and change brings the next big thing. This is a major
reason that our visions are one and the same.
That always stuck with me as I continued to create new
innovative songs and finally, I decided to attend Full Sail
University where I studied music theory, psychology of play,
audio art in the entertainment and media industries, recording
principles, musical structure and analysis, mixing techniques
along with several other necessary courses that contributed to
my Bachelor’s Degree in Audio Production.
While attending Full Sail University I completed a 6-month
internship at Studio 11 in “The Windy City” Chicago, IL where
I created many different musical sequences. This included songs
for vocalists, sounds for video games sounds and
cinematography. One of the projects that I worked on is up for a
Grammy nomination.
6. Again, I know my way around a studio producing, recording,
mixing, and mastering for artists, video games, and cinema. The
art of writing and structuring songs. I’ve personally worked as
and with artists to help hone their skills. I possess the business
aspect and knowledge of the industry from marketing to sales
tactics down to music theory.
If you believe in continuing to lead this industry through
creative and innovative thinking, then you believe in us. With
all the new technology advancing so rapidly, maybe the sky
isn’t the limit. I say let’s push these boundaries, metaphorically
speaking in this industry. I’m Curtis Brown and thanks for your
time!
