1. Magazine Evaluation What have I learnt from the preliminary task to the end product?
2. Front Page Another convention I have looked at is the three colour rule, This is something I have taken onboard with my final magazine. This is because as you can tell by looking at the colour palette you can see that the colours I used for my preliminary do not go together, white, grey & blue. However I now feel I have the right mix of colours, black, grey and the red (taken from the colour of the guitar). This is because throughout the creation of my mocks, I wanted to go with a black and white theme, and didn't want to feature any colour. However upon completion of some mock ups, I realised that my magazine was lacking in vibrancy and inspira- tion, it seemed boring. So I decided that I was to re-instate my colour picture of my model, and add some colour to headings etc. I have learnt various rules and conventions about how to create a magazine, one of these were where to place the masthead, usually the masthead is said to take up about 1/3 of the space available. Although this is something I have challenged with my magazine, where my main cover image takes up the majority of the front cover, whereas the masthead only uses about a quarter of the space available on the front cover. Another feature which I noticed throughout the research tasks was that all magazines flowed well, due to the consistency with placement of pictures, logos, and using the same fonts and sizes. Looking at my coursework result you can see that I have used the same fonts throughout, and have included the same colour schemes.
3. Contents Another feature I learnt about was to include a logo on every page to help give the magazine a sense of identity, in addition to keep it in the same place to help keep consistency. As you can see with this I did include a logo on every page, in the same colours, and in the same place. If you look at my preliminary attempt below, you can see that my contents layout is all over the place, and doesn't look professional. However, If you look at the contents list on the left, you can see that I have took the need for a professional looking layout for the contents onboard, and applied it to my own magazine. You can also see that I noticed that my preliminary attempt lacked vibrancy, possible due to the colours used. However I also incorporated extra images on my final contents. These were in the style of Polar- oid, and I feel that these add then sense of style I was looking to achieve. One convention which I have learnt since my preliminary is the need for consistency throughout the magazine. As you can see from my magazine I have addressed this through various features. The first is the colour scheme. You can see that I have used the same background colour, and the same colour for the text appearing on the page. In addition to this I have ensured that the heading is the same colour is the same as the masthead on the same page – again to help with the consistency and continuity.
4. Double Page Spread Again you can see from this page that I have continued to follow many conventions I have stated on the previous slides. As you can see on the double page spread, I have continued to use the same logo as I did on the contents page. This something which I have learnt to ensure over the course of the project, to make certain that continuity carries throughout the magazine. This is the same with the fonts I have used on this page. You can also see from the image below that I have learnt that magazines always place their articles in columns. This is because they are easier to read. This is obviously a convention which I didn't need to know for my preliminary task – as we didn't need to create a double page spread, however, it is just another example of what I have learnt over the process of creating my magazine.
