I modified several photos for use in my magazine through Photoshop. For the cover photo, I removed the background, increased saturation to make the subject brighter, adjusted levels to emphasize props, and sharpened the image. For interior photos, I removed backgrounds, increased lighting and saturation to match magazine conventions, cropped legs, and added a shadow effect. I also brightened, saturated, and sharpened a double-page photo. Secondary photos were only cropped to show a photo shoot sneak peek. Through these edits, the photos now suit the genre and magazine format.

Creation of my student magazine
- 1. Creation of my student magazine Design decisions behind the school fashion magazine ‘School Style’
- 2. Original photo What I did: Took a photo of a student in a typical school surrounding for my main image. Why: I decided to take this photo because it illustrated a school scenario – a student socialising with his friends in a typical school environment. When taking the photo I decided to have the school cafeteria and a dim looking wall in the background to illustrate the true reality of school. By having a grungy wall and background it also helped to express the negative view of returning to school after a summer holiday.
- 3. 1st Edit What I did: Colour corrected (enhancing the image) the main photo of the student/school scene background. Why: I colour corrected the image to make it more visual appealing and to bring out the colours that were lost in the photo. I decided on a ‘warm’ colour correction as it bought out the red colours in the coat.
- 4. 2nd Edit (Part 1) What I did: I duplicated the picture layer making the duplicate greyscale. After this I just erased the coat making the coat the only coloured element of the picture. Why: For my photo I wanted to create a positive and negative theme. The positive being the new freedom of clothing, the negative being a new hard school year. By making the school black and white it gave it a ‘negative’ atmosphere. I decided I would have colour on the coat because it gave the magazine a more professional touch. Furthermore, it made the model stand out from the background.
- 5. 2nd Edit (Part 2) What I did: I cropped the magazine to A4 size using the crop tool and the measurements 297mm x 210mm Why: Most magazines are of an A4 size, so I wanted to make my magazine as ‘normal’ as possible in this aspect. Also, by cropping my image straight away it allowed me to have all my text and images the appropriate size.
- 6. Main heading text What I did: Added a masthead with my magazine title ‘School Style’. To the text I added a white stroke outline and a red gradient colour effect. Why: For my main heading text (after much experimentation) I decided to use the ‘Franklin gothic heavy font’. Since the magazine was intended for school children I choose not to use a ‘formal font’, hence why the font I choose looks basic and remotely childish. I wanted my text to synergise well with my image, to do this I needed to make a ‘colour palate’(colours that work together) that I could use. The majority of colour on the cover was from the coat in the main image. I decided to use the colour picker tool to select a dark red and a lighter red colour from the coat and made it into a gradient for the text. I decided to use a white stroke (text outline) to make the image stand out from the background so that it could be read easier.
- 7. Adding body text What I did: Added sell lines to the magazine cover. I also added a peel off sticker with a sell line. Why: Firstly I added a peel off sticker effect to my magazine cover. I did this so that the slightly unusual nature of the sticker would draw peoples attention to my magazine. Furthermore, it gave the magazine an almost professional look. In this sticker I included the slogan for the issue ‘new year, new fashion’. I wanted to go for a simple sell line text design as most magazines do the same. With my colour palette in mind I used the colour pinch tool to select a lighter red from the coat. To make the text stand out from the background (as the colours were light and so was the background) I added a stroke and drop shadow to the text. I used the same font as the title, ‘franklin gothic heavy font‘ to keep a similar theme throughout the magazine.
