The document discusses the design process for a magazine masthead called "Retro". The author created several design iterations using different color schemes and shapes. Their favorite design used basic shapes edited to form the title, which they thought looked more sophisticated and unique than their initial "Wave" design. However, they felt the colors could be improved by making them brighter and more contrasting to better catch the viewer's eye. In later iterations, they experimented with changing the colors to green with blue outline, yellow with blue outline, and orange with blue outline, but were not fully satisfied with how eye-catching or effective these appeared.
The French Revolution, which began in 1789, was a period of radical social and political upheaval in France. It marked the decline of absolute monarchies, the rise of secular and democratic republics, and the eventual rise of Napoleon Bonaparte. This revolutionary period is crucial in understanding the transition from feudalism to modernity in Europe.

The Roman Empire A Historical Colossus.pdfkaushalkr1407
The Roman Empire, a vast and enduring power, stands as one of history's most remarkable civilizations, leaving an indelible imprint on the world. It emerged from the Roman Republic, transitioning into an imperial powerhouse under the leadership of Augustus Caesar in 27 BCE. This transformation marked the beginning of an era defined by unprecedented territorial expansion, architectural marvels, and profound cultural influence.
The empire's roots lie in the city of Rome, founded, according to legend, by Romulus in 753 BCE. Over centuries, Rome evolved from a small settlement to a formidable republic, characterized by a complex political system with elected officials and checks on power. However, internal strife, class conflicts, and military ambitions paved the way for the end of the Republic. Julius Caesar’s dictatorship and subsequent assassination in 44 BCE created a power vacuum, leading to a civil war. Octavian, later Augustus, emerged victorious, heralding the Roman Empire’s birth.
Under Augustus, the empire experienced the Pax Romana, a 200-year period of relative peace and stability. Augustus reformed the military, established efficient administrative systems, and initiated grand construction projects. The empire's borders expanded, encompassing territories from Britain to Egypt and from Spain to the Euphrates. Roman legions, renowned for their discipline and engineering prowess, secured and maintained these vast territories, building roads, fortifications, and cities that facilitated control and integration.
The Roman Empire’s society was hierarchical, with a rigid class system. At the top were the patricians, wealthy elites who held significant political power. Below them were the plebeians, free citizens with limited political influence, and the vast numbers of slaves who formed the backbone of the economy. The family unit was central, governed by the paterfamilias, the male head who held absolute authority.
Culturally, the Romans were eclectic, absorbing and adapting elements from the civilizations they encountered, particularly the Greeks. Roman art, literature, and philosophy reflected this synthesis, creating a rich cultural tapestry. Latin, the Roman language, became the lingua franca of the Western world, influencing numerous modern languages.
Roman architecture and engineering achievements were monumental. They perfected the arch, vault, and dome, constructing enduring structures like the Colosseum, Pantheon, and aqueducts. These engineering marvels not only showcased Roman ingenuity but also served practical purposes, from public entertainment to water supply.

June 3, 2024 Anti-Semitism Letter Sent to MIT President Kornbluth and MIT Cor...Levi Shapiro
Letter from the Congress of the United States regarding Anti-Semitism sent June 3rd to MIT President Sally Kornbluth, MIT Corp Chair, Mark Gorenberg
Dear Dr. Kornbluth and Mr. Gorenberg,
The US House of Representatives is deeply concerned by ongoing and pervasive acts of antisemitic
harassment and intimidation at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Failing to act decisively to ensure a safe learning environment for all students would be a grave dereliction of your responsibilities as President of MIT and Chair of the MIT Corporation.
This Congress will not stand idly by and allow an environment hostile to Jewish students to persist. The House believes that your institution is in violation of Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, and the inability or
unwillingness to rectify this violation through action requires accountability.
Postsecondary education is a unique opportunity for students to learn and have their ideas and beliefs challenged. However, universities receiving hundreds of millions of federal funds annually have denied
students that opportunity and have been hijacked to become venues for the promotion of terrorism, antisemitic harassment and intimidation, unlawful encampments, and in some cases, assaults and riots.
The House of Representatives will not countenance the use of federal funds to indoctrinate students into hateful, antisemitic, anti-American supporters of terrorism. Investigations into campus antisemitism by the Committee on Education and the Workforce and the Committee on Ways and Means have been expanded into a Congress-wide probe across all relevant jurisdictions to address this national crisis. The undersigned Committees will conduct oversight into the use of federal funds at MIT and its learning environment under authorities granted to each Committee.
• The Committee on Education and the Workforce has been investigating your institution since December 7, 2023. The Committee has broad jurisdiction over postsecondary education, including its compliance with Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, campus safety concerns over disruptions to the learning environment, and the awarding of federal student aid under the Higher Education Act.
• The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is investigating the sources of funding and other support flowing to groups espousing pro-Hamas propaganda and engaged in antisemitic harassment and intimidation of students. The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is the principal oversight committee of the US House of Representatives and has broad authority to investigate “any matter” at “any time” under House Rule X.
• The Committee on Ways and Means has been investigating several universities since November 15, 2023, when the Committee held a hearing entitled From Ivory Towers to Dark Corners: Investigating the Nexus Between Antisemitism, Tax-Exempt Universities, and Terror Financing. The Committee followed the hearing with letters to those institutions on January 10, 202

2. Using Photoshop to design my masthead. My masthead is called
“Waves” or “Retro”, here to the left you can see two of my designs,
quite simplistic through colour scheme and font. I prefer the top one
because the blending is more subtle giving the title more definition. I
think what I need to improve on with these designs is making them
more striking and contrasting so that they eye will go straight to the
masthead.
Here to the right are a few more designs for
my masthead, however I don’t really like
them because to me as a viewer they don’t
stand out that much, however the names
fairly catchy. I think I need to change the
idea overall because it looks a bit boring
and plain. It wouldn’t be the masthead that
stands out for me if it was in a store on a
shelf. I need to change the whole design
and use a wider contrast of colour.
3. To the left here is just a screengrab of what the masthead looked
like before finishing touches, it shows my progress of the piece,
the screengrab at the bottom left is my finalised edit. I much
prefer this masthead to “Wave” because it looks more attractive
to look as its not just the use of simple colours but also shapes. I
used basic shapes and edited them to make the title “Retro”,
which at first was a difficulty but I used the internet to help me
understand how to move shapes around and edit them so that I
could achieve this outcome. I think this title/masthead is much
better in my opinion than “wave”, because it looks more
sophisticated and unique. I think the colour palette is rather dull
which isn't exactly what a masthead should be, as it should be
eye catching as it is potentially the first insert of the cover that a
viewer will see. I think to improve this piece I could put the
lettering on a turquoise coloured background or possibly even
outline the lettering in a turquoise colour just to give it a bit
more definition, I could also try different contrasting colours,
orange and blue, yellow and green, play around with the colour
palette, making it much more brighter. This is the design I
would like to use for my magazine, maybe in a different colour
however.
4. This masthead, I have changed the colours to green with a blue
outline. I think the dark green colour requires a better brighter
colour to enhance it making it more eye catchy and easier to
pick up. However the lettering is crisp and can be read easier as
oppose to other colours. The colours of this masthead relate to
the theme of music I have chosen-Indie Rock. I think this is my
favourite masthead because it looks the most effective and
sophisticated.
This masthead, I have changed the colours to a yellow with a
blue outline. I think this masthead looks quite childish as though
it would appear on “Top of the pops” magazine. However the
colours link to the theme of indie. It grabs the viewer because it
consist of bright and contrasting colours making it look
effective and eye catchy.
5. This masthead, I have changed the colours to orange with a blue
outline. I could improve this edit by brightening up the blue, as
it is a bit dim and dull, this would help bring it life a bit more
giving it more depth. In my opinion this wouldn’t grab my eye
if it was store because it looks rather dull and ineffective. I
think the title itself “Retro” is highly effective because its short,
snappy and easy to remember. My peers also picked up that the
back and white “o’s” look like a record which links to the idea
of music and Indie/Rock.
Finally this masthead I have created, is decent but I don’t think
it works quite the same ass others because it isn’t that eye
catchy to look at, although yellow and purple do contrast I don’t
think it looks effective for a masthead on a magazine. It just
doesn’t stand out as a masthead I think its because the purple is
quite dark and patronising against the yellow.
