Recycling and Reusing
Waste management is needs proper techniques
keeping in mind the environmental situations.
Government and nongovernment battle cry is
“Reduce, Reuse, Recycle” to lessen waste. The
increasing of waste is the effects of pollution,
disease and other environmental problem.
Meaning of 3R’s
 Reduce – means we need to lessen what we throw.
 Reuse – means we need to use what we throw for
another purpose.
 Recycle – means to create or convert waste
materials into something useful.
The Principles of 5S
The Japanese advocates the use of the principles of 5S to lessen waste in the
workplace.
Japanese English Term Description
Seiri Sort
Identify and eliminate all unnecessary
items from the workplace
Seiton Straighten/Set in order
Put all items arrange in the storage area
in a safe place after use
Seiso Sweep/Shine Fully clean the workplace after service.
Seiketsu Standardize
After the first three are completed
maintain high quality of cleanliness and
orderliness. It should be no clutter, dust,
litter, stain on tables, counters and
equipment. Sanitize tools and workplace
when needed.
Have self-discipline to instill the habit of
cleaning. Every worker should make it a
Proper Ways of Sorting Waste Materials
1. Decide what is necessary and what is unnecessary.
2. Put a red tag on unnecessary items and keep them in a
separate area.
3. Throw those items which have not been used in the past one
year.
4. Things used 6-12 months may be stored at a distance from
work station.
5. Things used more than once a month should be available at a
central point in the work place.
6. Things used hourly/ everyday/once a week should be near the
work station.
Proper Ways of Straightening Waste Materials
1. If necessary, reassign spaces, racks, cabinets etc.
2. Decide the right places for everything.
3. Put all materials at a place allocated to them with proper label
or signalization.
4. Use alerts or indicators for out of stocks situation.
5. Use floor paint marking to define work area, path,
entrance/exit, cart/Trolley, equipment etc.
6. Use display cautious, messages, instructions at proper place..
Proper Ways of Systematic Waste Materials
 Eliminate obstacles in the workplace.
 Remove all things that are not in use.
 Segregate unwanted materials.
 Place components according to their uses.
 Use cleaning as an inspection.
 Prevent machinery and equipment. From deterioration.
 Keep workplace clean and safe to work.
 Set cleaning frequency
 Waste removal by cleaning.
Proper Ways of Standardize Waste Materials
 Remove all parts or tools that are not in use.
 Segregate unwanted materials from the work place.
 Waste removal.
 Arrange all necessary items so they can be easily selected for use,
 Maintain safety.
 Set cleaning frequency.
 Use cleaning as inspections.
 Keep work place safe and easy to work.
 Maintain orderliness.
 Everything should be in its right place.
 Chemicals, combustible, flammable, and poisonous materials should be
properly labeled.
 Place components according to their use.
Importance of Sustaining Waste Management
 It promotes habit for complying with work
place rules and procedures.
 It creates healthy atmosphere and a good
work place.
 It helps to develop team work.
 It provides you with data for improving the
assigned task.
 It makes you aware of performing the
assigned task properly.
