Rumor In Frankenstein
"Rumor has it that on this very planet, in 2467, there is a ferocious monster in the deep forest. We
were used to all the species back on Earth, but since it has been destroyed for years now, we know
next to nothing of these species. So be careful, otherwise, it, will, EAT YOU," The other kids
jumped when he said those last two words, but not the one in the front. "Bravo, Mark," said Jacob
sarcastically. "You really have these babies fooled," despite each of them being just as old as them,
14 years old. "Well we are in the small forest, so why not tell some scary stories," exclaimed Mark,
"My parents never told me that story," yelled a kid in the crowd of 6. "So good job on the.." "You
really think that story is good," interrupted Jacob. "I have an even better story". "I have heard that
story before," told Mark. "You walked into the same monster as the one in the rumor, and it killed
you, the end". Jacob then stormed out of the tent, back to his house in the city. "Hey Mom, hey
Dad," said Jacob. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Everything was dark and spooky. Especially the monster that was inside of it. Jacob had seen in
absolute horror that the monster was real. He had also come at the worst time possible. It had just
been completely swallowed the wolf he had seen the other day. The wolf's blood had been on its
teeth, on the ground, everywhere. The monster had black fur, bright red eyes, was enormous, had
sharp claws, sharp teeth, fur stained with blood of all different colors. The monster started
screaming at Jacob in the most ear deafening way possible. Jacob started to run away, but the
monster followed him. He had run through the forest and back into the tiny cave. The old man had
still been chanting his words. "What?" Jacob yelled when he heard the words. "Heck yes I want to
hear." The man gave him a piece of paper. The monster made it into the cave and cut the old man.
His scream of agony was the worst he had ever

The Pros And Cons Of Computer Criminals
Computer crimes are defined as an electronic crimes that may destroy important things such as
accounts, stealing pictures, and harming children. Corruption is really increasing nowadays because
of the misuse of the internet and computers and some users are really suffering as they are trying to
fix every little problem that ruins the computer and the confidential information. There are several
types of computer crimes such as phishing and the identity thefts. Although computer crimes may
benefit us in some way, computer criminals should be punished as they are hacking people's
accounts, abusing children, and spreading rumors all over the world.
The first reason is hacking accounts, which has been known as one of the popular computer crimes.
One of their actions is stealing people's bank accounts. For example, computer criminals start
creating fake websites pretending that this website ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
However, they should be penalised as they are crossing people's limits, and they are hiding so they
are anonymous. As Ronald K.Noble said at the opening ceremony of the first Interpol Information
Security Conference at Hong Kong's police headquarters: "Considering the anonymity of
cyberspace, it may in fact be one of the most dangerous criminal threats we will ever face"(2010).
Some people thinks that computer criminals can help us as sometimes a person is saying bad things
about the country in an application like Twitter or Facebook, so computer criminals can make their
own way to find who is the one and they can also recognise his location, so they will have all the
information they need about the person, by this technique computer criminals can take all the
information about this person to the police and they can catch the one who is destroying the
reputation. . Accordingly, appearing in anonymous way can help criminals to do their work without
fear, so they can damage and steal whatever they

Analysis Of The Chronicle Of Education By Thomas Bartlett
Alligators are living in the sewers of New York city, growing bigger than ever before and ready to
attack an entire populous when the time is right. Anyone who believed this statement was a victim
of rumor. Rumors like these aren 't just about giant animals or sewer monsters; in reality, they come
in all shapes and sizes. They can be miniscule, harmless and easily stifled, or grotesque, life–
crushing and out of control. A great example of this is the rumor that ruined the life of Chris
Dussold. 'Chronicle of Education ' senior writer Thomas Bartlett writes all about this particular case
in his essay "What Cost Chris Dussold His Dream Job?" published in the 'Chronicle ' in February of
2006. A rumor started in Mr. Dussold 's environment sent his entire life and desired career into a
spiral. Upon delving into this story, the reality and brutality of rumors can be displayed; these little
hearsays have much more power than the naked eye might at first perceive.
Mr. Dussold 's roller coaster of a story starts at his dream job: teaching finance at Southern Illinois
University. His job was going smoothly; he even headed a small financial–management club of a
few students at the school. However, sometime down the road, he heard a rumor. As any notable
rumor, it spread by word of mouth. There was a story floating around about him having affairs with
one of his club students, Ms. Jennifer Peyla. Of course this rumor was nothing more than that–– a
rumor. There was found to be no

You know when you look back on your life and you just feel...
You know when you look back on your life and you just feel like there are just these certain days
which define your life and exactly how you are now at this very second? Those days where little
details stick out and they constantly ponder across your mind even years afterwards? This was one
of those days. This was back when I attended high school, in a year which I now think of as a bit of
a "rebel" year. It might have been one because quite possibly this day was the "baddest" day of my
life. The weather was wet and cold and each step I took in the dark sodden grass reminded me of
what I was doing. But it wasn't what I was doing that was "wrong", it was what many people were
saying. The memory is clear of the exact happenings on that day, ... Show more content on

That day was when the first rumour started and from that rumour followed the unending stories and
questions which continued on for years. Each rumour started small and each got bigger to a
snowball size, and before I knew it. Everything had snowballed and I had ended up with a
snowstorm filled with nothing of the truth. I still remember saying "We won't tell anyone about this,
will we?" and hearing the reply, "No, of course not". If only those four simple words were truly
meant.
The days and weeks that followed were unbelievable. It was just one of those times in life where
you never think its going to end. Each day drags on and you wake up with the same feeling of
bleakness every single morning. Although it was I hard, I still went to school and endured what I
would now consider the hell of my high school life. When I walked down the hallways at school, I
felt the endless stares and the feeling of nothing but lies surrounding me. I remember hearing my
name at random times, where small groups of people thought I was out of ears distance. Not to say I
enjoyed it, some of the things that people said I'd rather not hear anyone say about me EVER. I was
looked upon like I was a disease that no one wanted anything to do with. I felt lonely, regretful,
disgusted and cast out. Cast out of every part of high school, friends, family and even my teachers
looked at me differently.

Rumors Essay
Neil Simon's farce, Rumors, gives readers an in–depth look at the lives of ten wealthy individuals
attending a dinner party. In an attempt to stay within the social crown, the characters start
unsubstantiated rumors about their friends in an attempt to make themselves look better. The hosts
of the party, Ken Gorman, and his wife Chris must cover up the fact that a friend of theirs, Charley
Brock, has been shot in the ear lobe. They do not know how he got shot, but they decide that he
must have tried to commit suicide, and thereby proceed to spread rumors about what they have
heard in an attempt to avoid a possible attempted suicide scandal. They first lie to Charley's personal
doctor, they lie about what happened to all of the servants, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

Lenny and Claire Ganz arrive at the party first. Coming straight from a car accident, the Ganz's ask
why Charley has not joined them for the party.
Ken Gorman explains that Charley has had a rough day and he decided to take a nap for a little
while. Lenny exclaims that he has not had a thing to eat since breakfast and wonders where Mai Li
the cook has put all of the food. Not wanting to explain that they have recently fired Mai Li, the
Gormans fabricate a story about her having to go back to Japan to visit her sick mother. Claire asks,
"But Mai Li is Chinese, isn't she?" The Gormans look at each other and then Chris
quickly says, "I know. Her mother was visiting Japan." As a result of this, they must ask
their friends to help them prepare dinner for their own party. They know that if they explain to the
Ganz's that they do not have enough money to keep her in service any longer, they will fall of out
favor with their friends.
For this reason, they find it necessary to fabricate stories to explain happenings in the house. As the
night progresses, they consistently dig themselves into a deeper hole of lies. The situation eventually
gets terrible when Ken tries to hide the gun so Charley can't find it to shoot himself again. On his
way to putting in the closet, Ken trips over Charley's slippers and discharges the gun

Rumors In To Kill A Mockingbird
Rumors spread like wildfire, but when the rumor spreads each time it is told it is changed. A new
detail is added, a bit of flare is put in to make it even more exciting. Rumors are not the truth they
are not even close to the truth, yet people seem to believe rumors more than what the truth actually
is. Due to this gossip and these rumors we get people like Boo Radley who are largely
misunderstood and who have been given a reputation built on the fantasies of others. These stories
that are spread make an innocent man look like a monster in the eyes of the people. In the novel "To
Kill a Mockingbird" gossip is something that Maycomb county thrives on. Thanks to Miss

While walking home from school one day the children happen to find two pieces of gum hidden in
the knot–hole of a tree on the Radley yard. These treasures, the children soon come to realize, can
only be from the elusive man himself Boo Radley. Soon enough the children find even more gifts
from Boo such as a small box with Indian–head coins, a ball of twine, a boy and girl carved soap
figures, a whole pack of gum this time, a spelling medal, and their most cherished treasure, a pocket
watch. This knot hole was the only connection between Boo and the children until the hole was
clogged up by Boo's brother Nathan, but because of that Hole Scout and Jem began to see Boo just a
little differently from the way they saw him before. Something that also helped Scouts
understanding of Boo began to change was during the fire of Miss maudie's house. While Jem and
Scout watched the events unfold from a safe distance a very unusual thing occurred. Scout while
watching the fire did not seem to notice that a blanket that she had not come out with was wrapped
around her shoulders. After her father Atticus pointed this out he also mentioned that this was the
work of Boo Radley who, like the rest of the neighborhood came out to watch the

Leading Cause Of Negativity In Society In Arthur Miller's...
Rumors are among the many dilemmas afflicting the human condition. They eat away at society like
a parasite, undermining morality and infecting good intentions with malice or decay. Despite the fact
that rumors are not always accurate, they still spread like wildfires. Rumors are the leading cause of
negativity in society. In Arthur Miller's work, The Crucible, rumors spur mass hysteria in the
colonial town of Salem by changing people's views of a situation, undermining the self–confidence
of victims, and inspiring fear among friends and neighbors.
Likewise, a person's perception and viewpoint drastically change from rumors whether they are true
or not. People often tend to believe everything they hear, which causes society to conclude that the
rumor is true without knowing all the facts. In The Crucible, a character named Parris illustrates this
by saying, "She may be. And yet it has troubled me that you are now seven months out of their
house, and in all this time no other family has ever called for your service" (Miller 1.1.26). In
addition to their assumptions, the gossip itself leads to the false accusations of Abigail. "No matter
how much gossip gets into the people's heads who live in Salem, they would never choose to talk to
the person, just about them" (Decter). Jumping to conclusions causes people to judge others unfairly
and without merit, causing physical and emotional damage to anyone affected by the untruth of the
rumor. This is an identical struggle that

Are Wildfires Good Or Bad
A sickness that spreads like wildfires, damaging and destroying everything in its path. Everyone
near it and everyone in it, is in some way harmed; either by the spread of it or the fire itself. Some
may say that wildfires are a part of nature, and in fact helpful and healthy in terms that after the fire,
nature has the opportunity to grow a new. But in the end the fire has such a destructive severity that
it causes more harm than good. Gossip and rumour can be interpreted in a similar way. like fire
people would argue that it is innocuous, but that is rarely the case; oftentimes gossip and rumours
degrade people causing damaging consequences to their reputation and self esteem.
Some argue that gossip and rumours help shape and bring people ... Show more content on

Rumour and gossip is that which is uncertain to be true about someone that is spread around to
everyone else. In To Kill a Mockingbird, Lee proves this through characters Jem and Scout's idea of
Boo Radley: "inside the house lived a malevolent phantom....people said he went out when the
moon was down, and peeped in windows. When people's azaleas froze in the cold snap, it was
because he had breathed on them"(10). This demonstrates how gossip and rumour can be twisted up
about someone so much, that the person becomes this weird creep in the eyes of these children.
Also, Atticus (Jem and Scouts father) is the lawyer for a black man accused of rape in a trial, which
causes people around the town they live in–Maycomb– to gossip and spread rumours of how Atticus
is a "Nigger Lover" (Lee 110). Not only does this damage his reputation, but it also taunts there
children who are battered by people about it, and even though in the beginning scout didn't know
what it meant, people said it in such a negative way she new it was untrue about her father.
Moreover, an issue on a topic of the Effects of Rumour and Gossip was sent out to teens in the
Monta Vista high school for the purpose of instigating communication concerning the "real world"
of high school within the community (Verdadera 1). Evidence on how this issue affects the student
body including one student student in particularly, how it was spread by that she had sex with
another student at her house when she and him were drunk and did it before he broke up with his
ex–girlfriend (Verdadera 2). This will always be in the back of everyone's minds when they talk with
this student, and not was she affected but the boy she liked and her friends and family as well,
because the rumour will make her friends question her morality which will hurt the

Jay Asher, the author of the novel Thirteen Reasons Why, once said, "You can hear rumors. But you
can't know them." Listening to a popular rumor can often force people to believe it is true. Not
everything people say is true if nobody can provide proof. In the book To Kill a Mockingbird by
Harper Lee, folks in the town make rumors that get out of hand. Many of these rumors and popular
opinions change throughout the novel. However, just because the rumors are well known does not
always make them right because everyone has an own opinion. Tom Robinson has a hard time
gaining respect from the jury during the trial against Mayella Ewell. Tom is accused of raping
Mayella however, Mayella has no proof of Tom harassing her. Every time one of the

Rumors can affect you in many ways. They can ruin your name, you can lose your job, and you can

people in the U.S. were being accused of being communists. There was a national "witch hunt" for
people who were suspected of being communists which was called the Red Scare. For example,
many people were suspected of being communists and there were many warrants issued for the
suspected communists. Encyclopedia Britannica states, "But many of those people were only guilty
of having a foreign accent" (Encyclopedia Britannica). This quote shows that the rumor of
communists in the U.S. had people on edge and that officials were arresting people just ... Show

To end with, the rumors of the girls being in the woods with Tituba, John Proctor being a witch, and
Rebecca Nurse being a witch had many affects. The first rumor that had an effect was the rumor of
the girls being in the woods with Tituba. At the beginning of the story, Tituba was seen with all of
the girls in the woods. Parris said that they were doing weird things and everybody thinks it's
witchcraft. Abigail told Parris, "Uncle, the rumor of witchcraft is all about..." (I,i, 76–79). When the
word got out of what happened in the woods, the townspeople believed it and they were curious to
learn more details. This rumor about witchcraft was the beginning of a troubled time and officially
started The Salem Witch Trials. When the trials started, Tituba was accused of having dealings with
the Devil by the court. To attempt to get out of trouble, she started telling the court who she "saw"
with the devil. Tituba told the court that, "Aye, sir, and Goody Osburn" ( I,i, 1347,1348). Since
Tituba decided to start this rumor about Goody Osburn, it would cause another innocent person to be
accused of something she did not do. It would also start a long line of additional rumors to arise.
That is the effect of the rumor of the girls being in the woods with Tituba. The second rumor that
had an effect was John Proctor being a witch. Towards the end of the trials, all of the rumors and lies

The Process and Reasoning: A Psychology of Rumor By Robert...
The Understanding of a Rumor
Synopsis. One of the more interesting readings in Behrens and Rosen's Wrting and Reading Across
the Curriculum was "A Psychology of Rumor" By Robert H. Knapp. His major point was the
understanding of the process and the reasoning behind rumors. A rumor can be classified as a special
case of informal social communications that include myth, legend, and current humor. Rumors have
three basic characteristics to them. The first is mode transmission which is usually done through
word of mouth. The second characteristic is that they provide information, ranging from a particular
person, an event, or condition. Lastly, the third characteristic is that a rumor satisfies mythology,
folklore, and humor. Rumors have the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Knapp and "Managing Rumors" by John Doorley and Helio Fred Garcia both discussed the makeup
of rumors they doth went into different aspects of rumors.
Even though both did have their own approach for rumors they did have some similarities between
the two readings. They both contribute to the fact that rumor go through a sort of simplification. In
"A psychology of Rumor" it was stated that "As perception and memory simplify the things we see,
so do they simplify the rumors we hear and read. In time, a successful rumor becomes a "good
story." This process of heightening some elements, or leveling or leveling others" (Knapp 361) In
"Managing Rumors", John Doorley and Helio Fred Garcia stated,
"George W. Allport and Leo Postman, constructed experiments on how the content of rumors
changes as the rumor passes from person to person. They concluded that as a rumor travels, it tends
to grow shorter, more concise and more easily told: In subsequent versions [of rumor] more and
more original details are leveled out, fewer words are used and fewer items are mentioned... As the
leveling of detail proceeds, the remaining details are necessarily sharpened." (Doorley and Gracia
398) The dissimilarities between the two were more prevalent towards the end of the articles. Both
discussed what makes up rumors but "A Psychology of Rumor" discussed more about principles of
rumors and talked about them as they are not in control after they have been

How To Fight A Rumor Jesse Singal Analysis
Rumors are something that we all know are constantly spreading everyday; however, most of us
might not exactly know the specific effects that they can and do have on our social lives. In this
article by Jesse Singal titled "How To Fight a Rumor" he writes to try and explain the effects that
rumors have and different methods that some people have used to try and counter them. His thesis is
that in order to combat rumors we must first learn about the inner workings of rumors themselves.
He does this by using examples such as the 2008 presidential election, studies that have been
conducted, and the research from those studies. These examples along with others combine to make
his argument much more strong. Although the author Jesse Singal only ... Show more content on

The fallacy that he avoids the most would have to be an argument from ignorance fallacy. One
example of a claim that he makes is when he says, "When it comes to rumors about people rather
than events, psychologists have found that we pay especially close attention to rumors about
powerful people and their moral failings" (515). If he were to leave this as is this would create a
fallacy in his argument. In order to avoid this he would have to back it up with some type of
evidence. He does this by referencing Frank McAndrew. In the article he writes,"Frank McAndrew,
a professor of psychology at Knox College who studies the evolutionary roots of gossip, has found
that we're particularly likely to spread negative rumors about "high–status" individuals, whether
they're our bosses, professors, or celebrities" (515). By referencing his studies it allows him to avoid
fallacies and continue to further the topic. He supports many more of his claims in the article to
avoid this fallacy

A Psychology Of Rumor By Robert H. Knapp
In society, rumors are seen as a common occurence amongst people. It is valid to say that every
individual who has come of age, has encountered rumors at some point. The creation and popularity
of social media has only facilitated this phenomenon more in ways unimaginable. Through social
media, people are able to transmit rumors more quickly amongst themselves. From a more in depth
perspective, the people who spread rumors do not know that they are doing such a thing. The fact
that the people who transmit the rumor are mostly unaware of how to believe and anxiety play a
significant role. The concept of a rumor is better understood when broken down into the details,
these include the definition of a rumor, how rumors work, why rumors are spread, ... Show more

conformity of one person, and this information is meant to be significant to those involved or

words, humans are capable of using these rumors in order to make sense of the happenings around
them. Humans are able to use this idea of a rumor almost as an asset in which when they are having
a difficult time comprehending something, a rumor may be the only solution or a last resort in order

as politics. The Module C rubric states, students explore and analyse a variety of texts that portray

However, throughout the play there is never really a consistent definition, as the multiple main
characters share different perceptions of what honour is about. These varying perceptions of honour
can be seen through Shakespeare's chosen way of representing the characters, where some
characters represent his opinion of honour whilst others may reveal the more common perception of
honour during his time. Shakespeare used these characters to sort of hide different thoughts and to
expose the common perception to not always lead to success. For example, Hotspur feels that
honour is gained through glory in battle either by overthrowing royalty or defending one's reputation
from others. Hotspur is rather confident in his position as prince when he says in Act 1, "A son who
is the theme of honour's tongue, Amongst a grove the very straightest plant". On the other hand we
have King Henry IV who feels honour is acquired with the well–being of the nation and the
legitimacy of the ruler. Here we have two different representations of honour within a political
setting. Furthermore, Hal associates honour with noble behaviour, although for a long period of the
play he sacrifices the honourable look for his own interests, confident that he can regain his honour
when he needs to. Falstaff disregards honour as a whole and

For example, the killer likes to toy with his or her targets and victims. He or she generally begins the
tormenting with a phone call, text message, or an email. Usually, it is the killer pretending to be
someone close to the target, a fellow insider. The killer always makes some vague statement that the
targets are left trying to decipher in order to determine who the killer is going after next. The targets,

This is an additional instance of the characters relying on weak–tie relationships in an attempt to

Think Its Right For People To Be Talking Bad About You...
Do you think its right for people to be talking bad about you when it's not even true???? Well
personally I don't think so because what if they were in your shoes they would feel the same way .
There's lot of questions you should be asking about this topic, but I'm going to be talking about three
things in this essay that I think are the most important I think : rumors making people hate you/ lose
trust, why people like making up rumors, and do they ruin your friendship? Do you think rumors
make people hate you and lose trust? Cause I think they do. People talk bad because they feel the
need to and sometimes its not good. Rumors can make people hate you because sometimes it can be
about a close friend and they can hear that something happened and be like I don't think we
shouldn't be friends anymore or not even tell you. In article "someone is spreading rumors about
me" says, "if you don't like this person from the beginning you don't have to start stuff with them". I
agree with that because nobody should be saying anything anyway even if you think this is true,

The definition of rumor I got from " definition of a rumor" says, " talk or opinion widely
disseminated with no discernible source". That sounds about right because people wanna get you in

because they could have a bad life at home and want to take it out on other people so they will make
rumors about others. Other times some people not being mean have no life and wanna hurt others
for no reason. I think to get rid of all of the rumors and talking smack we could have a little meeting

Harriet Tubman: Biography
Harriet Tubman was an important African American who ran away from slavery and guided
runaway slaves to the north for years. During the Civil War she served as a scout, spy, and nurse for
the United States Army. After that, she worked for the rights of blacks and women.
Harriet Tubman was really named Araminta Ross, but she later adopted her mother's first name. She
was one of eleven children of Harriet Greene and Benjamin Ross. She was five when she worked on
a plantation in Dorchester County, Maryland. She was first a maid, and a children's nurse before she
started working as a field hand when she was twelve. While she was thirteen, her master hit her head
with a heavy weight. The hit put permanent ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
She decided to become a conductor on the infamous Underground Railroad, where people from the
south would runaway to freedom in the north. She rescued her sister, her nieces, brother, and her
parents.
For about ten years, she made an estimated 19 trips into the slave states and helped about 300 slaves
to the north. Tubman was in great danged while she was a conductor of the railroad, because
southerners offered a huge reward for her capture. Tubman used great disguises, posing as old men
and old women, to avoid suspicion when traveling in slave states. She carried sleeping powder to
stop babies from crying and always had a gun just for protection.
During the Civil War, which began in 1861, Tubman served as a nurse, scout, and spy for the Union
Army in South Carolina. She helped cook and prepare food for the 54th Massachusetts Regiment,
which was made up of all black soldiers and was better known as the Glory Brigade. She later

Introduction
For the purpose of this assignment we will be researching and evaluating the importance of the
grapevine in internal business communications. In order to do this effectively we will first need to
define the grapevine, discover how it originated, describe its structure, and discuss the advantages &
disadvantages. We will also interpret the results of an experiment which has been performed to
assess the accuracy of the grapevine. On completion of this information we will then be in a position
to conclude whether or not the grapevine is in fact important in internal business communications in
the present day, and also we will put forward our recommendations on how to manage it.
There are many conflicting opinions regarding whether the grapevine is a valuable tool for rapid
transmission of information, or simply an annoyance causing untrue rumours to circulate.
Business–unit boundaries exist precisely because they create efficient structures for executing
strategy. The solutions, we think, lies not in reorganisation but in informal communication through
the social networks that exist throughout the company.
(Kleinbaum & Tushman 2008)
It's concerning because the grapevine, although a rapid carrier of "news", is generally unreliable as a
source as information is passed on from person to

Advantages And Disadvantages Of Grapevine
The term grapevine is commonly used to denote informal communication. Its origin may be traced
to the United States Civil War of the 1860s when telegraph lines were strung from tree to tree like a
grapevine. For so long, grapevine was equated with rumour. However, the so called grapevine is
now a recognised instrument of communication (Banerjee, 1995). Within a business, there are two
types of internal communication, formal and informal. Formal communication spreads through
newsletters, emails, memos, staff meetings, conferences and official notices. Informal
communication occurs through the grapevine, which is generally word–of–mouth communication.
Internal business communication that moves through the grapevine spreads throughout the

The main danger is that much of the information that gets spread through the grapevine is not
verified. Some of the information is likely false and difficult, if not impossible, to verify.
We discount information when the source is a known gossiper. But not completely... Even when the
source is someone known to spread rumors, we believe that where there's smoke... Since we don't
know what part is fire and what is smoke, we accept the whole rumor. To justify our participation in
spreading the rumor, we tell ourselves that part of it must be true.
The main reason why we give credence to a rumor is that it seems to match what we think about the
situation or person that the rumor is about. We also tend to believe the person sharing the rumor with
us.
Another main disadvantage of grapevine communication is that it's often used to spread more than
rumors; it's used to spread gossip.
The terms rumors and gossip are used sometimes interchangeably, but rumors are not quite the same
as gossip. Both are pieces of information that can't be verified, but rumors tend to affect
organizations or groups of people, while gossip refers to more personal

Starbucks And Starbucks : Starbucks
Introduction: Rumors have fluttered about a widely known company that specializes in coffee called
Starbucks. The rumor accused Starbucks in 2004 over an email. A Sargent in the Marines helped
make the email go viral. A friend of his informed him about the email and it then began to spread
like wildfire. According to the Sargent, he actually contacted the disgruntled sender and got a "real
story" from him, but this was never actually verified as to whether or not it's true. The whole
situation upset the Sargent enough to share the email and story with others. He included all
accusations against Starbucks. Rumors formed when more and more people began to share what had
happened. The email is still floating around and being talked about. So lets find out the real source
of the story and what started the rumor and all the negativity. I'll talk about how Starbucks reacted
and what they did to try and resolve the issue. I'll also mention Starbucks response to it all and how
things should've been handled and what still should be done in order to get more fans back.
The Problem: Here is how it all started: a friend told Marine Sargent Howard Wright that Starbucks
didn't support our American Troops. Wright was stunned to hear this and decided to write an email
out explaining how a message was sent to Starbucks requesting to send coffee to Iraq. He included
that Starbucks didn't support the war going on in Iraq. This email went viral and kept it going as

Rumors: Case Study
Rumors have emerged that a potential bout between top welterweights Keith "One Time" Thurman
(26–0, 22 KOs) and Shawn "Showtime" Porter (26–1–1, 16 KOs) are on the negotiating table and is
set on October 3rd under Al Haymon's Premier Boxing Champions fight card.
Boxing News 24's Dan Ambrose said that this could be the "first real test" for the man who calls
himself One Time as Porter is a former IBF welterweight champion and arguably the most skilled
and most experienced among all of his previous opponents.
Ambrose also indicated that Thurman got his WBA welterweight belt without fighting "someone
good" for it.

Collazo was said to be winning in the scorecards as Thurman backpedaled the whole fight, but the
referee halted the match at the beginning of the eighth round as Collazo could not see clearly due to
a bleeding cut above his eye caused by an accidental head butt.
Meanwhile, Porter is coming off a huge unanimous decision victory over Adrien "The Problem"
Broner in their June bout at the MGM Grand. Showtime dominated Broner during the entire match
with his aggressiveness and pinpoint accuracy, with the latter mimicking Floyd Mayweather Jr.'s
evasive techniques to no avail.
The 27–year–old Porter was knocked down in the opening minutes of the last round with a wayward
right, but that's about the only shining moment for The Problem.
SB Nation's Bad Left Hook indicated that Thurman–Porter would be a "good fight" as both are two
of the best up and coming boxers in the division these days. The Transnational Boxing Rankings
Board lists them as numbers 5 and 6 respectively in their official rankings.
The potential bout is said to be the main event of the October 3rd PBC fight card in a still
undisclosed venue that also included a clash between Broner and former WBA light welterweight
champ Khabib Allakhverdiev as an undercard, as per Opening

Effects Of Rumor On Rumor Transmission
Rumors are a piece of everyday life; they zoom across the workplace, fly in the streets, and dash
across the internet. According to DiFonzo, "Rumors are unverified information statements that
circulate about topics that people perceive as important... used by people attempting to make sense
or to manage risk" (241). Rumors are created to satisfy the emotional wants and needs of a specific
group of people and because of these wants and needs, people reject certain truths and facts that
contradict their ideology and worldview. Belief and anxiety have a direct relationship to rumor
transmission due to a person 's wants and needs, propaganda, ideology, bias assimilation, and
cognitive dissonance. In Pezzo and Becksteads "A Multilevel Analysis of Rumor Transmission", the
psychologists find that rumor anxiety and situational anxiety have an effect on rumor transmission.
If anxiety is associated with a rumor, people are likely to pass it on because they believe the rumor
themselves. DiFonzo declares that rumors arise in times when there is a threat or potential threat
because questions are unanswered, information is missing, or there is no clear communication (243).
According to Pezzo and Beckstead, there are three types of anxiety: situational anxiety, rumor–
specific anxiety, and trait anxiety. Situational anxiety is when situations produce more anxiety than
others, rumor–specific anxiety is when topics themselves cause more anxiety than others, and trait
anxiety is when a few

The Power Of Rumors In The Crucible
Rumors in The Crucible "Trying to squash a rumor is like trying to unring a bell" (Shana
Alexander). Rumors are never good for anyone. They are said to do nothing but cause pain and
never joy. McCarthy during the Red Scare, used rumors to grab people's attention to him and he
abused it. McCarthy writes in an article on Newsela, ¨McCarthey later gave Congress the name of
State Department employees he claimed were traitors¨ (McCarthy). McCarthey talked about his list
of traitors that he believed were in the government. Then he finally gave it to Congress. McCarthy
responded to the list of traitors and got people fired or jailed who were accused. The website
USHistory.org, has information that talks about how the government steps up in the investigations.
According to USHistory.org, "The U.S. Congress created a committee that sought to find "Un–
American Activities" in the Hollywood film industry" (USHistory.org). The Congress accused
people in the Hollywood industry such as actors and directors. The ones who named names of being
suspected communists were allowed to go free. The ones that refused to address the committee were
fired and blacklisted and never were allowed to work in Hollywood again. McCarthyism is what the
author draws his ideas from in ¨The Crucible¨, because people were being falsely accused of
something and being punished for it. Even though there was no evidence of this rumor being true.
The Crucible has an interesting background to how the story came about. The author wrote this
during McCarthyism and based it off of the the events taking place in the time period. The Red
Scare and McCarthyism are backbones for how the story, "The Crucible" was written. The author of
the story, Arthur Miller, was accused of being a communist during the Red Scare. Just like the Red
Scare and McCarthyism, "The Crucible" is a story about people being accused of witchcraft and the
events that take place because of the accusations. These rumors about people are with no evidence at
all. The rumors cause people to go to jail or get hung, such as Tituba, who gets jailed, and John
Proctor, who gets was hung. As a result, the rumors about Tituba being of being a witch, Martha
Corey being a witch, and Elizabeth Proctor

Anatomy Of A Rumor Daniel Goleman
Psychologist Daniel Goleman explains in his article "Anatomy of a Rumor: It Flies on Fear" that
anxiety is the driving factor for the spread of rumors, and that people who fall victim to them should
use contrary evidence to disprove the rumor.
There are too many examples of rumors to list, but Goleman selects a few to demonstrate the ample
variety in which rumors come. Goleman explains that "rumors are a kind of opportunistic
information virus" (487), which spread because of the anxiety they evoke in people. Rumors hold
some level of emotional value and can help people feel more in control of an otherwise tumultuous
situation. It is common to want an answer to something unknown, and rumors can offer a proposed
explanation. The most quickly spread rumor is the one containing content that is cause for concern,
because sharing the rumor can be comforting to the one repeating it. The emotional importance of a
rumor separates it from regular gossip and causes it to be spread more expeditiously. ... Show more

Beyond interviews, researchers can derive a false rumor in order to determine how different types of
rumors are spread, and to determine the demographic spreading those different rumors. The
language of the designed rumor is very specific, as both denotation and connotation are critical
components of how the rumor will be taken and spread. Referring back to the notion that rumors are
flared and sustained by anxiety, Dr. Rosnow, a psychologist at Temple University, found that the
likelihood of someone spreading a rumor directly correlated with the likelihood of that person
falling victim to the rumor. If a woman hears a rumor about something that could not conceivably
happen to her, she is much less likely to repeat that rumor than if it were about something that could
easily happen to

Theme Of Doubleness In The Great Gatsby
II. At this point, hints have already been dropped to the reader about Gatsby and his "doubleness",
(Hays, 1), but even so Fitzgerald now begins to emphasize the extent of that "doubleness" by
showcasing not only Gatsby's strange habits, but his wealth and power as well.
Fitzgerald has already demonstrated to the reader how unrestrained Gatsby's lifestyle is, and now he
has begun to slowly affirm Nick's doubts about Gatsby. Aside from that, Fitzgerald focuses even
more so on hinting at the truth behind Gatsby's notorious rumors.
The first time the reader actually sees Gatsby use his social status for something other than parties,
is during a brief encounter with a highway policeman.
As Gatsby speeds down a highway and is stopped by a policeman, Nick witnesses him wave "a
white card from his wallet" right in front of the man's face. This gaudy display of exemption implies
that Gatsby is not at all opposed to using his social status to his benefit, morally just or not. It hints
back to the rumors floating around his parties that Gatsby is not a man to be trifled with, so much
that Fitzgerald even goes so far as to call Gatsby "second cousin to the devil" (61). Thus, his
'doubleness' as a mysterious party host and a rumored "cold–blooded killer" is brought to relevance
(Hays, 1). 2. At lunch, Nick is introduced to Meyer Wolfsheim, who very nearly exposes Gatsby's
dealings in shady business. This encounter is used to show where some of the rumors about Gatsby

The Negative Effects Of Office Beliefs In The Workplace
Office gossip is one of the worst problems that can happen in the workforce. When an employee
tries to spread a rumor or something that an employee did, it can have a negative effect in the work
space. There are multiple ways that office gossip can happen and there are ways to remedy the
situation as well. Unfortunately, office gossip is something that cannot be avoided as it is human
nature to bring rumors into the office. There are, however, ways to avoid the situation. Most workers
would choose to avoid talking with others and not sharing their personal life with fellow coworkers.
While it is acceptable to avoid talking about personal lives with other staff, keeping to themselves
do not make an effective team. The first way to avoid office gossip is simple, but not as easy. It
involves not starting the rumor in the first place. By not starting rumors in the first place, there
would be no problems in the first place. Because rumors start from somewhere, then there is a
problem already in the office. For example, if I was an employee looking to get a promotion with
better pay, but was in competition with another coworker, it stands to reason that I would do
anything I can to get the promotion. But when my competition learned that I did something that the
management would frown upon, he starts spreading it across the office space in an attempt to break
my chances of obtaining the promotion. If the bosses found out, not only would I lose the
promotion, there is now a

throughout the organization in all directions irrespective of the authority levels. Man as we know is
a social animal. Despite existence of formal channels in an organization, the informal channels tend
to develop when he interacts with other people in organization. It exists more at lower levels of

PROS AND CONS OF GRAPEVINE COMMUNICATION
Advantages:
Grapevine channels carry information rapidly. As soon as an employee gets to know some
confidential information, he becomes inquisitive and passes the details then to his closest friend who
in turn passes it to other. Thus, it spreads hastily.
The managers get to know the reactions of their subordinates on their policies. Thus, the feedback
obtained is quick compared to formal channel of communication.
The grapevine creates a sense of unity among the employees who share and discuss their views with
each other. Thus, grapevine helps in developing group cohesiveness.
The grapevine serves as an emotional supportive value.
The grapevine is a supplement in those cases where formal communication does not work.
Disadvantages:
The grapevine carries partial information at times as it is more based on rumours. Thus, it does not
clearly depicts the complete state of affairs.
The grapevine is not trustworthy always as it does not follows official path of communication and is
spread more by gossips and unconfirmed report.
The productivity of employees may be hampered as they spend more time talking rather than
working.
The grapevine leads to making hostility against the executives.
The grapevine may hamper the goodwill of the organization as it may carry false negative

Wickham Gossip
According to Wickham's writing, gossip is an essential part of socializing in humans. He argues that
gossip determines the individual's placement in society; it is very telling as to what groups a person
does and does not belong to. He provides many examples of the kinds of things discussed and how
the information shared varies depending on the relationship status of the gossipers and how these
choices and actions will impact the relationship and, therefore, the individual's status in the group.
Furthermore, gossip is a means of sharing information. Regardless of the intent and content of the
gossip, it moves quickly, can assist in determining the credibility of the source, and can solidify or
break down social groups. What's more, gossip

The Contagious Rumors In To Kill A Mockingbird
The Contagious Rumors
"I guess rumors are more exciting than the truth."–Venus Williams. People spread rumors because
they feel that it will interest them more than the truth. In some ways, creating rumors can give
people a reason to for them to believe that something is more flared than what the actual truth is. In
other words, this means that people elaborate and stretch the actual truth in a situation, rather than
believing the astounding truth. Often times, this helps people compress the unknown, and fill in the
gaps to the clues that don't make sense. Not understanding the unknown is hard, and leads to people
jumping to conclusions when they don't even know exactly what happened. In the novel To Kill a
Mockingbird, rumors spread throughout the town creating stereotypes and changing many people's
once honorable reputation and unfairly forcing them to alter their way of life forever. One situation
where rumors got the best of an innocent person was in the situation of Tom Robinson. Tom, and
African American living in Maycomb county, is accused of raping Mayella Ewell, a poor, white
female. When Tom is accused of beating and raping Mayella, many people around the town think
that he's automatically guilty. Atticus, Tom's defending attorney, agrees to take on the case to help
Tom because he knew that he may have not committed the crime based on all of the precise
evidence in the case. It was clear that the people who were the victim of racism are also often the

Boo Radley well represented the meaning of isolation throughout the book because of all the
rumors. The rumors about him such as him being a creep and such spread like wildfire in the city
leading him to be disconnected from the rest of society. Boo couldn't speak for himself nor even
explain to everybody the false rumors made about him. The fact that he was isolated gave him less
privileges than everybody else. Boo Radley had to do things hidden and secretly while keeping a
low profile because maybe he knew if he was caught, he would've been thought for doing something
else considering all the rumors gave the people a fixed opinion about him. His only restabilization
into society was the two kids, Jem and Scout. The boys were his rehabilitation however, alongside
the journey the boy's lost their innocence in order for Boo to prove his actual and true character. As
the journey goes along, we as the audience can witness the fact that Boo maybe isn't a bad person.
The boys realize this too but the more they found out the more innocence about their city was lost.
Evidence would be like the gifts in the tree hole and how his brother covering up the hole only
showed the bad in people. Another would be like the time when Boo turned out to be the hero by
saving the children but, the whole situation itself with Bob Ewell attacking them was their final
moment in life which made them understand that not all people are good. Within the trial Tom
Robinson was isolated from others because of the simple reason being black. If Tom Robinson was
white, it is quite possible the court would have been very different in terms of who was considered
guilty. But Tom's race led him to be more so the minority and weaker in his groups because of the
rumors how blacks are terrible and such. The trial ended up being quite unfair because there was
evidence for Tom being innocent but because he was black, the judge considered him guilty. This

Rumors In Pride And Prejudice
When I read Pride and Prejudice, I saw many different themes, so it was hard for me to choose just
one to focus on. I could have written this on the importance of family, marriages, or wealth, but I
chose to focus on the effects that rumors and social classes have on our society. In my opinion, this
is a huge part of the story and is still part of life for anyone and everyone. Starting at a young age we
are put into groups by looks, athleticism and smarts. These groupings and stereotypes are
everywhere. This book made me realize the effects that rumors and social classes have on our

known that this wasn't good, but reading this book made me realize the importance of getting to

of their background. Since I will be going into high school soon, I am going to be meeting lots of

The Pros And Cons Of Books
Books are challenged/banned all over the world because of their content. But they shouldn't be.
Books are tools and are very important to help students learn and grow. Books are used for leaning,
entertainment, and many movies/shows are based on books. Books are banned/ challenged mostly
by parents and students because of language, violence, and other things in the book that bother
them. For example, the novel Thirteen Reasons Why by Jay Asher. The book is based on the
characters Clay Jensen, and Hannah Baker, and their peers. In the book, Hannah is a girl that killed
herself but left behind 13 tapes that told the "story of her life" and why "her life ended". The book
includes Hannah's reasons for her to take her life and they're very realistic and detailed reasons. The
book is from Clay's point of view, and about Clay's feelings and reactions toward Hannah's death
and tapes. Thirteen Reasons Why shouldn't be banned not only because it's a very good book, but
because this book can help many people. This novel can help teenagers understand that the things
they say can hurt people and cause their personal problems to grow. It also shows them that their
actions matter a lot. To begin, the things that people say to others can affect them in many ways.
Words can hurt people for a very long time, and can cause for their personal problems to grow. To
show this, in the book Hannah talks about her first kiss with Justin, and about the rumors that were
said about that kiss. "Well,

Superstition, Panic, And Rumor
Superstition, panic and rumor make for a deadly concoction, especially when spurred by religious
zeal. While the actual trials may have only lasted for less than a year, Salem was indeed previously
entrapped in a dangerous illusion of their own making for decades. Such as the nature of superstition
and rumor, they curate an atmosphere of distrust, breeding paranoia because they are puzzles
waiting to be fully realized. If they are not, then the paranoia only festers into madness and panic–
growing anxiety. The divided colony of Salem devolves into a dramatic opera of fabrications, bent
on exposing the most convenient of culprits. The dramatics become a glorious piece of abject
theatre–a perverse freakshow–that coils into the roots of a frightened and tedious society, spreading
like a sickness. It is a virus bred from the ugly convenience of rivalry, intolerance and pity quarrels.
Salem first settled in 1628, beginning the Massachusetts Bay Colony. There are following events
that exacerbated the overall feeling of paranoia, frustration and unease in the colonies that would
later allow the trials to happen: The colony charter disputes that eventually led to King William's
War largely sending refugees into Salem Village, the raids of the indigenous peoples, the arrival of
smallpox believed to have been brought to the colonies by the Carrier family and more. There was
also controversy afoot when Reverend Samuel Parris, became Salem Village 's first ordained
minister in 1689, as

A rumor can start so many things and like the snowball effect and once a rumor starts, they don't

Hannah said this, it felt real and had Clay wondering if he could have done more to stop her suicide,
"I'm listening to someone give up. Someone I knew. Someone I liked. I'm listening but I'm still too

also motivates him to finish listening to the tapes quicker. When Hannah say, "No return
engagements. No encore. And this time, absolutely no requests." it is clear that she hadn't had a lot
of hope for her

Krushashw A Short Story : The Story Of Indradeva
Page 224
Indradeva sat in his chariot and disappeared. I returned to my father's home with a desire for a new
life, new youth, and new hopes. Next day Krushashwa came and took me his home with a great
dealof affection. I tried to have a normal life, but my life did not follow the normal pattern of living.
Krushashwa had two remorse. He felt guilty for abandoning me. If he did not abandon me and
treated with sympathy I would have cured by satisfying Indradeva by my penance. All the glory
would have gone to Krushashwa. The second reason was the eternal suspicion in the mind of a man.
It was natural for him to be jealous of Indradeva. Also, there are lots of rumor of his weakness for
women. He did not believe that Indradeva got satisfaction only by drinking soma–rasa from my lips.
There are lots of dirty talks about me and Indradeva.
"In Gautama's ashram, there was a rumor about the relationship between Indradeva and Apala". I
could tell nothing anymore. Reluctance and shame choked my throat. Did I offend her with my
words? No one can discard but carry his past throughout his life. Did I do a mistake by hurting
Apala reminding her of the dark past?"
Apala smiled in the veil of darkness. She said in an easy tone," Ahalya! Why are you feeling bad
about it? Before you, I have heard it thousand times. Every time a new version of Indra–Apala story
originates with a strange twist. Hence, whatever you heard was not new."
I had the courage to ask her, "Apala Devi! I am like your own

Rumor In Frankenstein

  • 1. Rumor In Frankenstein "Rumor has it that on this very planet, in 2467, there is a ferocious monster in the deep forest. We were used to all the species back on Earth, but since it has been destroyed for years now, we know next to nothing of these species. So be careful, otherwise, it, will, EAT YOU," The other kids jumped when he said those last two words, but not the one in the front. "Bravo, Mark," said Jacob sarcastically. "You really have these babies fooled," despite each of them being just as old as them, 14 years old. "Well we are in the small forest, so why not tell some scary stories," exclaimed Mark, "My parents never told me that story," yelled a kid in the crowd of 6. "So good job on the.." "You really think that story is good," interrupted Jacob. "I have an even better story". "I have heard that story before," told Mark. "You walked into the same monster as the one in the rumor, and it killed you, the end". Jacob then stormed out of the tent, back to his house in the city. "Hey Mom, hey Dad," said Jacob. ... He had also come at the worst time possible. It had just been completely swallowed the wolf he had seen the other day. The wolf's blood had been on its teeth, on the ground, everywhere. The monster had black fur, bright red eyes, was enormous, had sharp claws, sharp teeth, fur stained with blood of all different colors. The monster started screaming at Jacob in the most ear deafening way possible. Jacob started to run away, but the monster followed him. He had run through the forest and back into the tiny cave. The old man had still been chanting his words. "What?" Jacob yelled when he heard the words. "Heck yes I want to hear." The man gave him a piece of paper. The monster made it into the cave and cut the old man. His scream of agony was the worst he had ever ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 3. The Pros And Cons Of Computer Criminals Computer crimes are defined as an electronic crimes that may destroy important things such as accounts, stealing pictures, and harming children. Corruption is really increasing nowadays because of the misuse of the internet and computers and some users are really suffering as they are trying to fix every little problem that ruins the computer and the confidential information. There are several types of computer crimes such as phishing and the identity thefts. Although computer crimes may benefit us in some way, computer criminals should be punished as they are hacking people's accounts, abusing children, and spreading rumors all over the world. The first reason is hacking accounts, which has been known as one of the popular computer crimes. One of their actions is stealing people's bank accounts. For example, computer criminals start creating fake websites pretending that this website ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... However, they should be penalised as they are crossing people's limits, and they are hiding so they are anonymous. As Ronald K.Noble said at the opening ceremony of the first Interpol Information Security Conference at Hong Kong's police headquarters: "Considering the anonymity of cyberspace, it may in fact be one of the most dangerous criminal threats we will ever face"(2010). Some people thinks that computer criminals can help us as sometimes a person is saying bad things about the country in an application like Twitter or Facebook, so computer criminals can make their own way to find who is the one and they can also recognise his location, so they will have all the information they need about the person, by this technique computer criminals can take all the information about this person to the police and they can catch the one who is destroying the reputation. . • 5. Analysis Of The Chronicle Of Education By Thomas Bartlett Alligators are living in the sewers of New York city, growing bigger than ever before and ready to attack an entire populous when the time is right. Anyone who believed this statement was a victim of rumor. Rumors like these aren 't just about giant animals or sewer monsters; in reality, they come in all shapes and sizes. They can be miniscule, harmless and easily stifled, or grotesque, life– crushing and out of control. A great example of this is the rumor that ruined the life of Chris Dussold. 'Chronicle of Education ' senior writer Thomas Bartlett writes all about this particular case in his essay "What Cost Chris Dussold His Dream Job?" published in the 'Chronicle ' in February of 2006. A rumor started in Mr. Dussold 's environment sent his entire life and desired career into a spiral. Upon delving into this story, the reality and brutality of rumors can be displayed; these little hearsays have much more power than the naked eye might at first perceive. Mr. Dussold 's roller coaster of a story starts at his dream job: teaching finance at Southern Illinois University. His job was going smoothly; he even headed a small financial–management club of a few students at the school. However, sometime down the road, he heard a rumor. As any notable rumor, it spread by word of mouth. There was a story floating around about him having affairs with one of his club students, Ms. Jennifer Peyla. Of course this rumor was nothing more than that–– a rumor. There was found to be no ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 7. You know when you look back on your life and you just feel... You know when you look back on your life and you just feel like there are just these certain days which define your life and exactly how you are now at this very second? Those days where little details stick out and they constantly ponder across your mind even years afterwards? This was one of those days. This was back when I attended high school, in a year which I now think of as a bit of a "rebel" year. It might have been one because quite possibly this day was the "baddest" day of my life. The weather was wet and cold and each step I took in the dark sodden grass reminded me of what I was doing. But it wasn't what I was doing that was "wrong", it was what many people were saying. The memory is clear of the exact happenings on that day, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... That day was when the first rumour started and from that rumour followed the unending stories and questions which continued on for years. Each rumour started small and each got bigger to a snowball size, and before I knew it. Everything had snowballed and I had ended up with a snowstorm filled with nothing of the truth. I still remember saying "We won't tell anyone about this, will we?" and hearing the reply, "No, of course not". If only those four simple words were truly meant. The days and weeks that followed were unbelievable. It was just one of those times in life where you never think its going to end. Each day drags on and you wake up with the same feeling of bleakness every single morning. Although it was I hard, I still went to school and endured what I would now consider the hell of my high school life. When I walked down the hallways at school, I felt the endless stares and the feeling of nothing but lies surrounding me. I remember hearing my name at random times, where small groups of people thought I was out of ears distance. Not to say I enjoyed it, some of the things that people said I'd rather not hear anyone say about me EVER. I was looked upon like I was a disease that no one wanted anything to do with. I felt lonely, regretful, disgusted and cast out. Cast out of every part of high school, friends, family and even my teachers looked at me differently. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

In an attempt to stay within the social crown, the characters start unsubstantiated rumors about their friends in an attempt to make themselves look better. The hosts of the party, Ken Gorman, and his wife Chris must cover up the fact that a friend of theirs, Charley Brock, has been shot in the ear lobe. They do not know how he got shot, but they decide that he must have tried to commit suicide, and thereby proceed to spread rumors about what they have heard in an attempt to avoid a possible attempted suicide scandal. Lenny exclaims that he has not had a thing to eat since breakfast and wonders where Mai Li the cook has put all of the food. Not wanting to explain that they have recently fired Mai Li, the Gormans fabricate a story about her having to go back to Japan to visit her sick mother. Claire asks, "But Mai Li is Chinese, isn't she?" The Gormans look at each other and then Chris quickly says, "I know. Her mother was visiting Japan." As a result of this, they must ask their friends to help them prepare dinner for their own party. They know that if they explain to the Ganz's that they do not have enough money to keep her in service any longer, they will fall of out favor with their friends. For this reason, they find it necessary to fabricate stories to explain happenings in the house. As the night progresses, they consistently dig themselves into a deeper hole of lies. The situation eventually gets terrible when Ken tries to hide the gun so Charley can't find it to shoot himself again. • 11. Rumors In To Kill A Mockingbird Rumors spread like wildfire, but when the rumor spreads each time it is told it is changed. A new detail is added, a bit of flare is put in to make it even more exciting. Rumors are not the truth they are not even close to the truth, yet people seem to believe rumors more than what the truth actually is. Due to this gossip and these rumors we get people like Boo Radley who are largely misunderstood and who have been given a reputation built on the fantasies of others. These stories that are spread make an innocent man look like a monster in the eyes of the people. In the novel "To Kill a Mockingbird" gossip is something that Maycomb county thrives on. While walking home from school one day the children happen to find two pieces of gum hidden in the knot–hole of a tree on the Radley yard. These treasures, the children soon come to realize, can only be from the elusive man himself Boo Radley. Soon enough the children find even more gifts from Boo such as a small box with Indian–head coins, a ball of twine, a boy and girl carved soap figures, a whole pack of gum this time, a spelling medal, and their most cherished treasure, a pocket watch. This knot hole was the only connection between Boo and the children until the hole was clogged up by Boo's brother Nathan, but because of that Hole Scout and Jem began to see Boo just a little differently from the way they saw him before. Something that also helped Scouts understanding of Boo began to change was during the fire of Miss maudie's house. While Jem and Scout watched the events unfold from a safe distance a very unusual thing occurred. Scout while watching the fire did not seem to notice that a blanket that she had not come out with was wrapped around her shoulders. • 13. Leading Cause Of Negativity In Society In Arthur Miller's... Rumors are among the many dilemmas afflicting the human condition. They eat away at society like a parasite, undermining morality and infecting good intentions with malice or decay. Despite the fact that rumors are not always accurate, they still spread like wildfires. Rumors are the leading cause of negativity in society. In Arthur Miller's work, The Crucible, rumors spur mass hysteria in the colonial town of Salem by changing people's views of a situation, undermining the self–confidence of victims, and inspiring fear among friends and neighbors. Likewise, a person's perception and viewpoint drastically change from rumors whether they are true or not. People often tend to believe everything they hear, which causes society to conclude that the rumor is true without knowing all the facts. In The Crucible, a character named Parris illustrates this by saying, "She may be. And yet it has troubled me that you are now seven months out of their house, and in all this time no other family has ever called for your service" (Miller 1.1.26). In addition to their assumptions, the gossip itself leads to the false accusations of Abigail. "No matter how much gossip gets into the people's heads who live in Salem, they would never choose to talk to the person, just about them" (Decter). Jumping to conclusions causes people to judge others unfairly and without merit, causing physical and emotional damage to anyone affected by the untruth of the rumor. Everyone near it and everyone in it, is in some way harmed; either by the spread of it or the fire itself. Some may say that wildfires are a part of nature, and in fact helpful and healthy in terms that after the fire, nature has the opportunity to grow a new. But in the end the fire has such a destructive severity that it causes more harm than good. Gossip and rumour can be interpreted in a similar way. like fire people would argue that it is innocuous, but that is rarely the case; oftentimes gossip and rumours degrade people causing damaging consequences to their reputation and self esteem. Rumour and gossip is that which is uncertain to be true about someone that is spread around to everyone else. In To Kill a Mockingbird, Lee proves this through characters Jem and Scout's idea of Boo Radley: "inside the house lived a malevolent phantom....people said he went out when the moon was down, and peeped in windows. When people's azaleas froze in the cold snap, it was because he had breathed on them"(10). This demonstrates how gossip and rumour can be twisted up about someone so much, that the person becomes this weird creep in the eyes of these children. Also, Atticus (Jem and Scouts father) is the lawyer for a black man accused of rape in a trial, which causes people around the town they live in–Maycomb– to gossip and spread rumours of how Atticus is a "Nigger Lover" (Lee 110). Not only does this damage his reputation, but it also taunts there children who are battered by people about it, and even though in the beginning scout didn't know what it meant, people said it in such a negative way she new it was untrue about her father. Moreover, an issue on a topic of the Effects of Rumour and Gossip was sent out to teens in the Monta Vista high school for the purpose of instigating communication concerning the "real world" of high school within the community (Verdadera 1). Evidence on how this issue affects the student body including one student student in particularly, how it was spread by that she had sex with another student at her house when she and him were drunk and did it before he broke up with his ex–girlfriend (Verdadera 2). To end with, the rumors of the girls being in the woods with Tituba, John Proctor being a witch, and Rebecca Nurse being a witch had many affects. The first rumor that had an effect was the rumor of the girls being in the woods with Tituba. At the beginning of the story, Tituba was seen with all of the girls in the woods. Parris said that they were doing weird things and everybody thinks it's witchcraft. Abigail told Parris, "Uncle, the rumor of witchcraft is all about..." (I,i, 76–79). When the word got out of what happened in the woods, the townspeople believed it and they were curious to learn more details. This rumor about witchcraft was the beginning of a troubled time and officially started The Salem Witch Trials. When the trials started, Tituba was accused of having dealings with the Devil by the court. To attempt to get out of trouble, she started telling the court who she "saw" with the devil. Tituba told the court that, "Aye, sir, and Goody Osburn" ( I,i, 1347,1348). Since Tituba decided to start this rumor about Goody Osburn, it would cause another innocent person to be accused of something she did not do. It would also start a long line of additional rumors to arise. That is the effect of the rumor of the girls being in the woods with Tituba. One of the more interesting readings in Behrens and Rosen's Wrting and Reading Across the Curriculum was "A Psychology of Rumor" By Robert H. Knapp. His major point was the understanding of the process and the reasoning behind rumors. A rumor can be classified as a special case of informal social communications that include myth, legend, and current humor. Rumors have three basic characteristics to them. The first is mode transmission which is usually done through word of mouth. The second characteristic is that they provide information, ranging from a particular person, an event, or condition. Lastly, the third characteristic is that a rumor satisfies mythology, folklore, and humor. Rumors have the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Even though both did have their own approach for rumors they did have some similarities between the two readings. They both contribute to the fact that rumor go through a sort of simplification. In "A psychology of Rumor" it was stated that "As perception and memory simplify the things we see, so do they simplify the rumors we hear and read. In time, a successful rumor becomes a "good story." This process of heightening some elements, or leveling or leveling others" (Knapp 361) In "Managing Rumors", John Doorley and Helio Fred Garcia stated, "George W. Allport and Leo Postman, constructed experiments on how the content of rumors changes as the rumor passes from person to person. They concluded that as a rumor travels, it tends to grow shorter, more concise and more easily told: In subsequent versions [of rumor] more and more original details are leveled out, fewer words are used and fewer items are mentioned... As the leveling of detail proceeds, the remaining details are necessarily sharpened." (Doorley and Gracia 398) The dissimilarities between the two were more prevalent towards the end of the articles. Both discussed what makes up rumors but "A Psychology of Rumor" discussed more about principles of rumors and talked about them as they are not in control after they have been ... How To Fight A Rumor Jesse Singal Analysis Rumors are something that we all know are constantly spreading everyday; however, most of us might not exactly know the specific effects that they can and do have on our social lives. In this article by Jesse Singal titled "How To Fight a Rumor" he writes to try and explain the effects that rumors have and different methods that some people have used to try and counter them. His thesis is that in order to combat rumors we must first learn about the inner workings of rumors themselves. He does this by using examples such as the 2008 presidential election, studies that have been conducted, and the research from those studies. These examples along with others combine to make his argument much more strong. Although the author Jesse Singal only ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... If he were to leave this as is this would create a fallacy in his argument. In order to avoid this he would have to back it up with some type of evidence. He does this by referencing Frank McAndrew. The creation and popularity of social media has only facilitated this phenomenon more in ways unimaginable. Through social media, people are able to transmit rumors more quickly amongst themselves. From a more in depth perspective, the people who spread rumors do not know that they are doing such a thing. However, throughout the play there is never really a consistent definition, as the multiple main characters share different perceptions of what honour is about. These varying perceptions of honour can be seen through Shakespeare's chosen way of representing the characters, where some characters represent his opinion of honour whilst others may reveal the more common perception of honour during his time. Shakespeare used these characters to sort of hide different thoughts and to expose the common perception to not always lead to success. For example, Hotspur feels that honour is gained through glory in battle either by overthrowing royalty or defending one's reputation from others. Hotspur is rather confident in his position as prince when he says in Act 1, "A son who is the theme of honour's tongue, Amongst a grove the very straightest plant". On the other hand we have King Henry IV who feels honour is acquired with the well–being of the nation and the legitimacy of the ruler. Here we have two different representations of honour within a political setting. Rumors can make people hate you because sometimes it can be about a close friend and they can hear that something happened and be like I don't think we shouldn't be friends anymore or not even tell you. In article "someone is spreading rumors about me" says, "if you don't like this person from the beginning you don't have to start stuff with them". In order to do this effectively we will first need to define the grapevine, discover how it originated, describe its structure, and discuss the advantages & disadvantages. We will also interpret the results of an experiment which has been performed to assess the accuracy of the grapevine. On completion of this information we will then be in a position to conclude whether or not the grapevine is in fact important in internal business communications in the present day, and also we will put forward our recommendations on how to manage it. There are many conflicting opinions regarding whether the grapevine is a valuable tool for rapid transmission of information, or simply an annoyance causing untrue rumours to circulate. Business–unit boundaries exist precisely because they create efficient structures for executing strategy. The solutions, we think, lies not in reorganisation but in informal communication through the social networks that exist throughout the company. (Kleinbaum & Tushman 2008)

According to DiFonzo, "Rumors are unverified information statements that circulate about topics that people perceive as important... used by people attempting to make sense or to manage risk" (241). Rumors are created to satisfy the emotional wants and needs of a specific group of people and because of these wants and needs, people reject certain truths and facts that contradict their ideology and worldview. Belief and anxiety have a direct relationship to rumor transmission due to a person 's wants and needs, propaganda, ideology, bias assimilation, and cognitive dissonance. In Pezzo and Becksteads "A Multilevel Analysis of Rumor Transmission", the psychologists find that rumor anxiety and situational anxiety have an effect on rumor transmission. If anxiety is associated with a rumor, people are likely to pass it on because they believe the rumor themselves. DiFonzo declares that rumors arise in times when there is a threat or potential threat because questions are unanswered, information is missing, or there is no clear communication (243). • 50. The Power Of Rumors In The Crucible Rumors in The Crucible "Trying to squash a rumor is like trying to unring a bell" (Shana Alexander). Rumors are never good for anyone. They are said to do nothing but cause pain and never joy. McCarthy during the Red Scare, used rumors to grab people's attention to him and he abused it. McCarthy writes in an article on Newsela, ¨McCarthey later gave Congress the name of State Department employees he claimed were traitors¨ (McCarthy). McCarthey talked about his list of traitors that he believed were in the government. Then he finally gave it to Congress. McCarthy responded to the list of traitors and got people fired or jailed who were accused. The website USHistory.org, has information that talks about how the government steps up in the investigations. According to USHistory.org, "The U.S. Congress created a committee that sought to find "Un– American Activities" in the Hollywood film industry" (USHistory.org). The Congress accused people in the Hollywood industry such as actors and directors. The ones who named names of being suspected communists were allowed to go free. The ones that refused to address the committee were fired and blacklisted and never were allowed to work in Hollywood again. McCarthyism is what the author draws his ideas from in ¨The Crucible¨, because people were being falsely accused of something and being punished for it. Even though there was no evidence of this rumor being true. The Crucible has an interesting background to how the story came about. The author wrote this during McCarthyism and based it off of the the events taking place in the time period. The Red Scare and McCarthyism are backbones for how the story, "The Crucible" was written. The author of the story, Arthur Miller, was accused of being a communist during the Red Scare. Just like the Red Scare and McCarthyism, "The Crucible" is a story about people being accused of witchcraft and the events that take place because of the accusations. It is common to want an answer to something unknown, and rumors can offer a proposed explanation. The language of the designed rumor is very specific, as both denotation and connotation are critical components of how the rumor will be taken and spread. Referring back to the notion that rumors are flared and sustained by anxiety, Dr. Rosnow, a psychologist at Temple University, found that the likelihood of someone spreading a rumor directly correlated with the likelihood of that person falling victim to the rumor. If a woman hears a rumor about something that could not conceivably happen to her, she is much less likely to repeat that rumor than if it were about something that could easily happen to ... • 54. Theme Of Doubleness In The Great Gatsby II. At this point, hints have already been dropped to the reader about Gatsby and his "doubleness", (Hays, 1), but even so Fitzgerald now begins to emphasize the extent of that "doubleness" by showcasing not only Gatsby's strange habits, but his wealth and power as well. Fitzgerald has already demonstrated to the reader how unrestrained Gatsby's lifestyle is, and now he has begun to slowly affirm Nick's doubts about Gatsby. Aside from that, Fitzgerald focuses even more so on hinting at the truth behind Gatsby's notorious rumors. The first time the reader actually sees Gatsby use his social status for something other than parties, is during a brief encounter with a highway policeman. As Gatsby speeds down a highway and is stopped by a policeman, Nick witnesses him wave "a white card from his wallet" right in front of the man's face. This gaudy display of exemption implies that Gatsby is not at all opposed to using his social status to his benefit, morally just or not. It hints back to the rumors floating around his parties that Gatsby is not a man to be trifled with, so much that Fitzgerald even goes so far as to call Gatsby "second cousin to the devil" (61). Thus, his 'doubleness' as a mysterious party host and a rumored "cold–blooded killer" is brought to relevance (Hays, 1). 2. At lunch, Nick is introduced to Meyer Wolfsheim, who very nearly exposes Gatsby's dealings in shady business. This encounter is used to show where some of the rumors about Gatsby might ... • 56. The Negative Effects Of Office Beliefs In The Workplace Office gossip is one of the worst problems that can happen in the workforce. When an employee tries to spread a rumor or something that an employee did, it can have a negative effect in the work space. There are multiple ways that office gossip can happen and there are ways to remedy the situation as well. Unfortunately, office gossip is something that cannot be avoided as it is human nature to bring rumors into the office. There are, however, ways to avoid the situation. Most workers would choose to avoid talking with others and not sharing their personal life with fellow coworkers. While it is acceptable to avoid talking about personal lives with other staff, keeping to themselves do not make an effective team. The first way to avoid office gossip is simple, but not as easy. It involves not starting the rumor in the first place. By not starting rumors in the first place, there would be no problems in the first place. Because rumors start from somewhere, then there is a problem already in the office. For example, if I was an employee looking to get a promotion with better pay, but was in competition with another coworker, it stands to reason that I would do anything I can to get the promotion. But when my competition learned that I did something that the management would frown upon, he starts spreading it across the office space in an attempt to break my chances of obtaining the promotion. If the bosses found out, not only would I lose the promotion, there is now a ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 60. Wickham Gossip According to Wickham's writing, gossip is an essential part of socializing in humans. He argues that gossip determines the individual's placement in society; it is very telling as to what groups a person does and does not belong to. He provides many examples of the kinds of things discussed and how the information shared varies depending on the relationship status of the gossipers and how these choices and actions will impact the relationship and, therefore, the individual's status in the group. Furthermore, gossip is a means of sharing information. Regardless of the intent and content of the gossip, it moves quickly, can assist in determining the credibility of the source, and can solidify or break down social groups. What's more, gossip ... • 62. The Contagious Rumors In To Kill A Mockingbird The Contagious Rumors "I guess rumors are more exciting than the truth."–Venus Williams. People spread rumors because they feel that it will interest them more than the truth. In some ways, creating rumors can give people a reason to for them to believe that something is more flared than what the actual truth is. In other words, this means that people elaborate and stretch the actual truth in a situation, rather than believing the astounding truth. Often times, this helps people compress the unknown, and fill in the gaps to the clues that don't make sense. Not understanding the unknown is hard, and leads to people jumping to conclusions when they don't even know exactly what happened. In the novel To Kill a Mockingbird, rumors spread throughout the town creating stereotypes and changing many people's once honorable reputation and unfairly forcing them to alter their way of life forever. One situation where rumors got the best of an innocent person was in the situation of Tom Robinson. Tom, and African American living in Maycomb county, is accused of raping Mayella Ewell, a poor, white female. When Tom is accused of beating and raping Mayella, many people around the town think that he's automatically guilty. Atticus, Tom's defending attorney, agrees to take on the case to help Tom because he knew that he may have not committed the crime based on all of the precise evidence in the case. We as a society should understand the negative impacts of spreading rumors considering how they set up bad motives and beliefs towards other people when the idea is clearly mistaken. We shouldn't base someone based on what they're recognized as (race, rumors, past) instead by what they are doing present and open up to realize not everyone rumored to be terrible are actually terrible bad and realize the bad ones can even come from your own group. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Boo Radley well represented the meaning of isolation throughout the book because of all the rumors. The rumors about him such as him being a creep and such spread like wildfire in the city leading him to be disconnected from the rest of society. Boo couldn't speak for himself nor even explain to everybody the false rumors made about him. The fact that he was isolated gave him less privileges than everybody else. Boo Radley had to do things hidden and secretly while keeping a low profile because maybe he knew if he was caught, he would've been thought for doing something else considering all the rumors gave the people a fixed opinion about him. His only restabilization into society was the two kids, Jem and Scout. The boys were his rehabilitation however, alongside the journey the boy's lost their innocence in order for Boo to prove his actual and true character. As the journey goes along, we as the audience can witness the fact that Boo maybe isn't a bad person. The boys realize this too but the more they found out the more innocence about their city was lost. Evidence would be like the gifts in the tree hole and how his brother covering up the hole only showed the bad in people. Another would be like the time when Boo turned out to be the hero by saving the children but, the whole situation itself with Bob Ewell attacking them was their final moment in life which made them understand that not all people are good. Within the trial Tom Robinson was isolated from others because of the simple reason being black. If Tom Robinson was white, it is quite possible the court would have been very different in terms of who was considered guilty. But Tom's race led him to be more so the minority and weaker in his groups because of the rumors how blacks are terrible and such. The trial ended up being quite unfair because there was evidence for Tom being innocent but because he was black, the judge considered him guilty. This event ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

I could have written this on the importance of family, marriages, or wealth, but I chose to focus on the effects that rumors and social classes have on our society. In my opinion, this is a huge part of the story and is still part of life for anyone and everyone. Starting at a young age we are put into groups by looks, athleticism and smarts. These groupings and stereotypes are everywhere. This book made me realize the effects that rumors and social classes have on our society. I've always known that this wasn't good, but reading this book made me realize the importance of getting to know someone. I've made lots of false predictions about how people are before I meet them because of their background. Since I will be going into high school soon, I am going to be meeting lots of new people. • 72. Superstition, Panic, And Rumor Superstition, panic and rumor make for a deadly concoction, especially when spurred by religious zeal. While the actual trials may have only lasted for less than a year, Salem was indeed previously entrapped in a dangerous illusion of their own making for decades. Such as the nature of superstition and rumor, they curate an atmosphere of distrust, breeding paranoia because they are puzzles waiting to be fully realized. If they are not, then the paranoia only festers into madness and panic– growing anxiety. The divided colony of Salem devolves into a dramatic opera of fabrications, bent on exposing the most convenient of culprits. The dramatics become a glorious piece of abject theatre–a perverse freakshow–that coils into the roots of a frightened and tedious society, spreading like a sickness. It is a virus bred from the ugly convenience of rivalry, intolerance and pity quarrels. Salem first settled in 1628, beginning the Massachusetts Bay Colony. There are following events that exacerbated the overall feeling of paranoia, frustration and unease in the colonies that would later allow the trials to happen: The colony charter disputes that eventually led to King William's War largely sending refugees into Salem Village, the raids of the indigenous peoples, the arrival of smallpox believed to have been brought to the colonies by the Carrier family and more. Next day Krushashwa came and took me his home with a great dealof affection. I tried to have a normal life, but my life did not follow the normal pattern of living. Krushashwa had two remorse. He felt guilty for abandoning me. If he did not abandon me and treated with sympathy I would have cured by satisfying Indradeva by my penance. All the glory would have gone to Krushashwa. The second reason was the eternal suspicion in the mind of a man. It was natural for him to be jealous of Indradeva. Also, there are lots of rumor of his weakness for women.
