Looking back at your preliminary task, what do you feel you have learnt
in the progression from it to the full product?
The preliminary task was very basic. It didn't contain much content on the front cover and all in
all wasn't something that would attract an audience. I think I have learnt a lot during the
progression and every stage possible. In terms of photography, my photo on the music
magazine looks a lot more professional due to conventions such as eye contact with the
audience. I have learnt how to take a photograph inspired by the topic. For example: the
clothing, the location, the lack of external personality but the notable depth within my music
magazine photo. I have also learnt how to plan sufficiently for the magazine. The preliminary
task had very little planning with only the name and the initial photography plan done
beforehand. However with the music magazine, it was planned down to the last detail- it's fair
to say some of the plans changed once put into action, but the detail of the plan beforehand
We planned everything using external resources such as questionnaires where we were able to create
a specific target market for the magazine and it was a lot easier to model the product after receiving
the feedback. I think one of the big steps of planning that helped was the publisher research. Due to the
fact that we could start to think of which company would benefit from a product like this early on and
also model the product around this factor. The planning and research we carried out before the
production has allowed us to learn a lot more about print-based media as a industry. In terms of
construction of the product- I have learnt a lot. Not just with the editing of the product but the specific
content and the appeal of a magazine taking into consideration the audience we were trying to cater
for. I think the editing process was a big change from that of the preliminary to the music magazine.
Having to take into consideration how much text you can put where and getting every aligned in order
to create a professional looking magazine is quite time consuming, and isn't something that really
crossed my mind when creating the college magazine. The photography between the two was
completely different- I had become used to shooting within a light area and a open space (as done so in
the preliminary task). However, I had not yet taken photos within a dark small space which is
something I had to do for my on location music magazine photographs- this allowed me to learn a lot
more about camera angles and finding/using what little lighting you do have in order to create a
photograph that looks good enough to use on a front cover.
All in all, the whole process has allowed to learn something across every single step of the creation of
my media product. I've learnt more about the sites I used to plan/broadcast my product, such as
surveymonkey, soundcloud, slideshare and most of all Blogger. Using the different platforms has
allowed me to create a media product that is of a different level to the preliminary tasks.
