1. How does your media product represent particular social groups?
My magazine is aimed at 16-24 year old females. The first way I have catered
for this social group is by using a 19 year old female model who falls into the
category- not being too young for the older end of the bracket, yet not too old
for the younger teens. She conventionally looks like someone who is of the
House Music genre. By this I mean, she is more edgy with a straight-cut bob
creating angles on her face, as opposed to the long haired, made up women you
see on pop magazines and such. Therefore the girls who look like these feel
accepted knowing that there is someone who looks like them on the front
cover of a music magazine. One thing I have no conformed to is the aspect of
the male gaze. The female I have used on my front cover, is
completely covered up with no aspects of looking like a
femme fatal- unlike my example image of Katy Perry. She is
wearing a dress with a very low back, long curls and looks
inviting with her over-the-shoulder stare. This is something
I wanted to avoid with my photograph in order to appeal
more to my audience of females who are not necessarily conforming to the look of a femme
fatal themselves. The body language of my character within all the photos she features in is different to those of
which I researched. On the front covers of those such as Billboard and Q we see the females conforming to the male
gaze- put in quite sultry positions, in order to achieve male approval. The colour and location of my photographs
appeal to my social group and they are black and white and are on location with a surrounding area that will
recollect with the audience of where House Music started.
2. The clothing in which I put my model in, is layered creating a more edgy look and very little opportunity for it to
be seen as conforming to the male gaze. I also think my outfit is realistic- in the sense that I haven't asked my
model to be in heels and a dress in the cold weather. In terms of content I think I have chosen articles that
will appeal to the social group of choice, with articles such as festival lineups, backstage passes to big House
artists and trips to LA and London.
All in all, I think I have managed to create a magazine that is realistic of girls within this social group as opposed to
given them an image that they aspire to be- but yet, may be a false reality with aspects such as airbrushing etc.
Being a member of this particular social group myself- I think this is something that I would want to see on a
magazine and with the knowledge that there isn't many out there- would want to buy this magazine more.
My magazine is aimed at a slightly high affluent consumer- who does have a disposable income, as my magazine is
priced at £3.20. And I think the content also appeals to them with the inclusion of the Creamfields lineup
which isn't the cheapest festival to attend.
