The student learned several key things from progressing from their preliminary college magazine project to their full music magazine product. For the music magazine, they conducted more in-depth research on conventions and target audiences. They also focused more on image planning through location scouting, costumes, and forms. While the college magazine used a black backdrop, the music magazine used a green screen, which took more work in Photoshop to remove reflections. The audience research for the music magazine helped the student better understand what would attract and entertain readers. Creating the music magazine in Photoshop rather than Publisher gave the student more creative control over design. There was also more pressure to meet deadlines and create additional sections for the music magazine. Overall, the

2. I would say in both projects, my pre-production
planning was very useful and effective since I was
able to get a feel on what I wanted my magazine
to look like and what content should be included.
Despite this, I think I did better with my music
magazine since: I went deep into what other
magazines looked like by their conventions and
forms, the type of target audience I wanted to
reach, whether it be mass and niche. Finally, I
really focused on the images I wanted to take by
location scouting, costume design, and a RECCIE
form.
3. When I was creating my college magazine, I took
my pictures against a black background, which I
also used for my magazine. However, for my
music magazine I took my pictures against the
green screen so at first it was a struggle to
remove all the green reflections on my model’s
body. Despite this, I overcame it by using the
special tools in Photoshop and the features in the
image and filter section. I decided not to use any
props in my photo shoot because I wanted the
readers to really focus on the artist and her body
language to get a sense of what she was trying
to portray, whether it be independence or
innocence.
4. The audience research I did before hand really helped
with the production of my magazine because I was
able to really focus on what they would expect to see
in a music magazine and what would attract them
while also keeping them entertained. I was able to
focus on: psychographics, thematic statement and
concept, the Hypodermic syringe theory and the
Effects theory. The step I took from using Microsoft
Publisher to create my college magazine to using
Photoshop to create my music magazine was
enormous. I had much more creative control on how I
wanted it to look and made it look a lot more
professional. I think my music magazine looked much
more clean and polished and I was strict with my
colours and fonts.
5. I would say there was much more pressure
when creating my music magazine because it
was not just a front cover, I had to create a
contents page and double-page spread also. If
I had to do this project again, I would make
sure that I met all my deadlines and stress
myself more to complete everything on time. I
would also use the feedback from my
magazine focus group to see how I could
improve my magazine in any way.
6. Overall, I think I did a really job with the
final outcome of my music magazine. It
looked fresh, modern, professional and it
appealed to my chosen target audience.
