A Modest Proposal To Visit
The purpose of this letter is to ask that you read the enclosed proposal about putting bike lanes in the
City of Manhattan. Currently, in the City of Manhattan doesn't have enough bike lanes in town
where bicyclists can ride safely on the road.
While the bike lanes might not currently have high traffic, adding more will increase the use of the
current ones. It is a challenge as a bicyclist when bike lanes are not on every road throughout the
city. For example, when bicyclists ride down or up Casement Road and on Westwood Rd meets with
Fort Riley Blvd, the road starts off wide enough for both a car and a bicyclist. The lane shrinks, so
there's only room for a car, which leaves bicyclist in an awkward position with nowhere to go since
bikes shouldn't be on the sidewalks. When bicyclists ride around Manhattan, they know how much it
gets them moving and ready to tackle a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
And having bike lanes also keeps citizens from the nearby neighborhood from riding on the
sidewalks, which is illegal for them to ride on.
Given that at least half of the bicyclists never use the bike paths, I am advocating for bike lanes,
particularly on the uphill side of the road. Simply adding 2 feet of pavement and minimizing the
ditch alongside the road will both maximize bicycle safety and minimize cost. I believe that the bike
lane is needed to keep them safe. In the winter, the bike lane will help keep cars from getting stuck
in the ditch after snowstorms when it is virtually impossible to tell where the road ends and the ditch
begins.
When there are more bikes around, people drive safe and when there are more bikes around, people
drive safer and are aware of them. The more bicyclists we see, the safer the roads are going to be for
them. I think Manhattan should be doing everything it can to encourage people to bike safe and
make the city a safer place to bike

Disadvantages Of Bicyclist
Bicyclists seem to want all the same privileges as a motor vehicle but not the responsibility. I have
not only witnessed numerous instances of bicyclists running stop signs, but also experienced a near
accident caused by a cyclist running a stop sign.
There could be numerous reasons why bicyclists run stop signs. One could be that they are
completely unaware of traffic laws. It also could be that they don't want to lose momentum by
stopping and having to start again, or they simply don't care. No matter the reason, they're
endangering the other people on the road. I find this very concerning and dangerous. If cyclists want
to be treated equally with motor vehicles, they should realize that they must also follow the same
laws and face the same penalties. When you strap on you're helmet and straddle you're bike you're
now legally responsible to follow the same rules of the road as an automobile.
When living in a large metropolitan city, there are an extreme amount of cars on the streets. This
contributes to smog, emissions, and a huge carbon footprint on mother earth. People are thankful for
others who take this into consideration and ride bicycles instead of driving, but this doesn't make the
bicyclist a better person, even though some of them act like it.
Living in a small town that may have only a few intersections with stoplights or stop signs, one may
feel freer to break the rules of the road, and the consequences are less harmful. When you run
through a stop sign in a

Disadvantages Of Cycling
Cycling could be a solution to personal, social, environmental and economic problems experienced
in developed countries. When investigating and studying the benefits of cycling, it can be difficult to
find an area where the benefits are as transparent as they are to our natural environment. Obvious
advantages may include saving money and improving your health. Just as history repeats itself,
cycling around town should be the old way forward!
Exercise is one of the best ways to deal with psychological problems, such as common problems
such as stress or rather more serious issues such as depression or anxiety. Regular exercise reduces
stress levels, improves a person's sleep patterns, improves concentration and releases endorphins,
ultimately giving you a better outlook on life. Cycling also liberates you and gives you the freedom
that we need, living in our fast moving world.
There are also social benefits to cycling, when cycling within a group. When we ride in a ... Show

Our drastic climate change and oil peak are the two biggest environmental issues we face today.
Scientists around the world have been sending warning signals for years, sadly society and
governments only now that the effects can be physically seen have started to take notice. Cycling the
most energy efficient form of transportation ever invented. Cycling reduces air pollution as the use
of a bicycle has virtually no carbon footprint. It reduces water pollution by means of no brake fluid,
anti–freeze or transmission fluids flowing into water systems. Cycling also reduces the amount of
noise pollution, as cars and especially taxis go around hooting all day, whereas bicycles bring a calm
and tranquil way of life. Less oil pumping: with the reduced use of cars, we are less reliant on petrol,
this therefore decreases the demand on pumping oil from our scared resourced

What Affects Safety When Riding Bicycle
Safety is a very ambiguous term that refers to a condition of being protected or being free of risk or
danger [72]. The truth is that there is no such thing as being 100% safe. Every action that a person
takes or can take possesses a degree of risk. People tend not to think about risk unless they are doing
something "extreme" or out of the ordinary. Nevertheless, many daily activities that people do have
a high degree of risk but are often overlooked because they are daily activities. A perfect example of
this is bicycling. Unlike cars and other transportation vehicles, bicycles do not have a "factor of
safety". There are no bumpers, airbags, or corrugating metals that will break a fall or prevent
someone from getting injured. Even the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
External factors are usually the cause of crashes because people don't or can't see them coming, and
in most cases there is almost no time to react. No one rides a bicycle expecting a car to hit them any
second or expecting their tire to blow out. Nevertheless, it is essential to consider every possible
factor that may affect the rider and design a product that limits any type of bicycle accident. The
goal of this project is to identify the most common crash scenarios for cyclist with motor vehicles
and create a device that prevents them from happening. The following section will review different
crash scenarios as well as the internal and external factors that affected the outcome of these
scenarios.

One patent that was different was one that projected a bike lane onto the road. The apparatus would
be mounted on the bicycle, and the light sources would emit a light beam on the left and the right of
the bike in order to emulate a bike lane as shown below in Figure 11 [73]. Figure 11: Light Beam

Persuasive Essay On Bicycle Safety
It has been asserted many times by mothers and law enforcement that people should use a bicycle
helmet, but many ignore the tip and increase the danger they face on a bike. Surprisingly in
California only those under 18 must wear a helmet (Coalition), but even adults should wear them as
the chance of injury increases when riding without one. The reasons why those under 18 have to
wear a helmet are reasonable as the organization KidsHealth in the article "Bike safety" informs
people that "Every year, about 300,000 kids go to the emergency department because of bike
injuries, and at least 10,000 kids have injuries that require a few days in the hospital. Some of these
injuries are so serious that children die, usually from head injuries". Death is a big reason to cause
the law to require kids to wear helmet, so all cyclists who wish to ride safely should wear a helmet
regardless of age. It is such an important piece of gear that bicycle safety is almost impossible to
think of without also thinking about a bike helmet. As in D. K. Howe's article "Bicycle Safety" the
United States Safety Administration provides the tip, "Wear a properly fitted helmet. It is the single
most important piece of safety equipment you can use".
Now that the importance of following laws and wearing a helmet have been addressed, it is time
bicyclist are aware of keeping a well maintained bike to lower the amount of accidents even more.
Safety is not all about keeping the head secured and knowing what

Factors Of Jaffna Cycling
Emotions occur when a personal interest will be harmed or will be promoted and this can lead to
take action and show a sudden behavior. There are 5 basic types of emotions. These emotions are
universal for people from different cultures. The basic emotions are joy, fear, anger, sadness and
disgust. Other emotions are derived from these basic emotions. Differences between positive and
negative emotions can easily be distinguished, joy is positive and fear is negative for example. Just
4% of the Jaffna cyclists experiences cycling as something negative. From the Jaffna cyclists, 67%
associated cycling with joy. The relation found was that positive emotions have a positive effect on
the experience of safety and negative emotions have a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This clearly says that most of the cyclists in Jaffna have enough skill (physical ability, experience) to
use the bicycle for commuting. They have more experiences and practices on cycling which is
becoming since their childhood period. The city topography (slopes) also is an aspect that prevents
them from using the bicycle to commute. Figure: 4.24, Willingness to overcome when cycling by
gender
Women have only 30 percent of power to overcome issues when they ride cycle but at the same time
men have 70 percent of knowledge to handling the issues related cycling. This clearly says that men
have more practices and experiences than women in Jaffna Cycling culture. (See Figure: 4.24)
Within experience of a journey, Comfort and speed are important which are influenced by the
qualities of the built environment but also other factors play a role. Comfort refers as convenience
and safety aspects, which includes for example pavement quality, a scenic environment and little
traffic. (See Table, 4.5) Speed refers to travel time for the cyclist. In this study, the ways in which
people experience comfort and speed are expressed. Study found that the most important
determinant of cycling for women was their 'level of comfort bicycling'. Although men experienced
the high discomfort on average as women, they were more likely to state that they would ride
anyway, whereas women said they would not. Nearly 95.8 percent of the cyclists are feeling

Health Advantages And Cures Of Cycling
Cycling
Since the 1800's riding bicycles is a daily life activity. It could be indoor cycling or outdoor. These
Cardio gyms are now known to maintain weight. Cycling can boost your overall fitness condition.
Because it is an intense cardio exercise that works the entire body at once. Day by day numbers of
indoor and outdoor cyclist are increasing, to archive this massive health benefits. Stationary Bikes
are the safest riding then outdoor cycling. Here we listed some common cycling injuries and their
cures.
Are There Common Cycling Injuries?
"My right knee just started hurting about 4 days ago. I am having sharp pains on the lateral side of
my knee. I had to bike the last couple days with just my left leg, which (wasn't a good thing)!
Hopefully, it will be better tomorrow!" David Shirley, taking a few days off in Portland, Oregon.
Asking the question implies the answer; of course, cycling has its list of common injuries, which are
amplified when a cyclist rides cross country over a period of several months–– which is the situation
with David.
Head Injuries
Head injuries are common among bicyclists who do not wear helmets, which come as no surprise,
considering it is not that difficult to hit a pothole while gazing at scenery or to be hit by a cell phone
obsessed driver. About 540,000 cyclists in the U.S. visit the emergency room each year, and of
those, 67,000 have head injuries.

"Sharing system",which was a brand–new concept appeard in 2015 has already become a
fashionable life style. Most people, especially those in first–tier cities may have an intensive feeling
that sharing system brings too much conveniece and low cost for their daily life, such as shared
bicycles.Besides, not only shared bicycles, but some other forms has begun to arise. For
example, because of the difficuty for finding a fixed parking lot and the high cost of parking cars,an
application named "Searching for Parking Spaces" or in Chinese "Zhao Che Wei" was developed by
a science and technology compony, this APP can help people find a shareable parking space by
inputting one's cellphone number, driving license number and how much time they need.In addition,

It's not just a simple economy form, but a different public service methed for the high degree of
participation and social influence. The precondition of sharing system is the disadvantages of
traditional vehicles. For example, driving is a common way people choose to travel, but as a matter of
fact, traffic jam and road accidents are become two mean reasons that people refuse to use cars. So
for these people, shared bicycles are the best choices. Secondly, the sharing economy depends on
Internet techonology which has a high speed development because all of the sharing products, such
like bicycles and umbrellas are managed uniformly by Internet. What's more, the sharing system
reflects that Chinese people, especially the young generation are more creative. Dai Wei,the

Transport By Bicycle May Seem To Be A Thing Of The Past
Transport by bicycle may seem to be a thing of the past but benefits associated with the trend
continue to give hope to those who see it as a means of daily transport. In the United states, majority
of the population consider cycling as a means of recreation and for leisure; and so most people don't
consider bicycles as a mode of transportation. Cycling is for everyone of all shapes, sizes, and age.
Over the years, America has learned to depend solely on cars and trucks, which operate on fossil
fuel for transportation needs. This credence generally contributes to air pollution which has negative
consequences on health (Srinivasan, O'Fallon, & Dearry, 2003). The elderly, children, individuals

Physical inactivity has been known to result in health consequences like obesity and heart diseases.
70%of US health costs are due to obesity associated diseases (Levine, 2011). Coronary artery
disease is the most common type of heart disease estimated to killing about 385,000 people in the
America annually. Coronary Artery Disease statistically, is the most prevalent cause of death in
American for both men and women, causing 600,000 deaths annually, which comes to about 1 in
every 4 deaths, males > females. The estimated economic cost of Coronary artery disease in the
United States is $109 billion per annum. Which will also include costs of medications, ER
admissions and healthcare services (Cassar, Gersh, Holmes, & Rihal, 2009).
Bicycling can help profit the same betterment in physical performance as other specific training
programs, and cycling at a proportionally low intensity for just 30 minutes a day and at least 3 times
weekly can increase life expectancy by several years (Hendriksen, Zuiderveld, Kemper, & Bezemer,
2000). Although positive health results cannot be attributed to biking alone, notwithstanding, the
benefits of amalgamating exercise and physical activity into one's day–to–day lifestyle is
incontrovertible. Exercising has been linked to psychological health and happiness. A study revealed
that people who exercise have an overall happier attitude both psychologically, and behaviorally by

A Report On The Car Travel
Introduction
Private vehicles are at the forefront of the growing epidemic regarding carbon pollution and climate
change. (Click) In Australia, cars accounted for 48% of transport emissions in 2013 (Trends in
transport greenhouse gas emissions, 2013). However to combat this issue, many cities around the
world have actively discouraged the use of private motor vehicles when travelling in and around the
city. They aim to reduce the prevalence of cars through the promotion of bicycles, walking and
public transport. In Europe, two cities have successfully implemented strategies and campaigns to
increase the amount of bicycle travel in and around the cities centre, these are Copenhagen and
Houten. The aim of this presentation is to investigate cities where car travel has been discouraged
and hence decreased and if and how these strategies can be adopted in Brisbane.
Brisbane
Brisbane is the third most populous city in Australia and capital of Queensland accommodating over
2.3 million people, thus it serves as an excellent basis to introduce a regime targeting at reduced
carbon emissions through a decrease in car use. In Brisbane it is evident that driving to work, school
and for leisure activities is the primary form of transport among adults. As evident by this map...

The Bicycles Changed America Essay
The Bicycles Changed America
The great changes in American society that came with the introduction bicycle in the late 19th
century are often overshadowed by the influence of the automobile in the following decades. Today,
bicycles are often seen as an alternative mode of transportation – a cleaner and more
environmentally conscious form of travel. Because of this, it may be difficult to realize the
incredible modernizing effects that bicycles had on American society when they were first
introduced. Manufacturing and marketing techniques introduced by the bicycle industry were
massive steps towards modern industrial practices. In addition, by making individual travel available
to many people for the first time, bicycles changed the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Drais de Savebrun was aware, however, of some of the important aspects of the draisine that hinted
at the future possibilities of bicycles: "when roads are dry and firm it runs on a plain at the rate of 8
to 9 miles an hour which is equal to a horse's gallop...[and] on descent it equals a horse at full
speed." (Smith, 1972, pp 4)
The next major development came with the acquisition of pedals. In 1855, the first bicycle with
pedals, the velocipede, was invented and became briefly popular when it was brought to the United
States. Because of the ride provided by its iron tires and wooden frame, the velocipede became
known as "the Boneshaker." The excitement around the velocipede died off within a few years,
however, as it proved to be difficult to ride, expensive, and dangerous.
During the second half of the 19th century, most of the major improvements were made that allowed
for the invention of modern bicycles. An iron frame rather than a wooden one, rubber tires (solid
rubber, however), rubber–coated pedals and steel rims were all developed during this time. Although
the new bicycles, known as "Ordinaries," had one wheel much larger than the other, were difficult to
mount and dismount, had no brakes, and were expensive, they became much more popular than any
of the previous ancestral bicycles. They were promoted on the basis that they provided exercise to
the riders, and that they had

MTB or ATB is an abbreviation for mountain or all–terrain bicycle. Their construction differs from a
normal bicycle as they have suspensioned frame to stand the mountain trails, logging roads ,

they have knobby treaded heavy duty wheels, more powerful brakes and lower gear ratios to
withstand steep hills with poor traction. As a result of this development in 1970s many kinds of
different mountain bikes appeared on the market as cross country, freeride and downhill MTBs.

Avoid pollution
You might think that a cyclist sucks up more pollution than a driver of a car or a bus passenger, but
this is wrong according to the research conducted by Imperial college in London. The car driver
sucks up more exhaust fumes (ultrafarine particles that can damage our lung cells),an average car
driver sucks up more than 100'000 particles per cubic centimeter, more than 10 times bigger amount
of inhaled pollution than the cyclist does, as the cyclist rides at the edge of the road not in the line of
exposure.

Forget about diets, riding is the best way to keep doctor away! "Moderate exercise makes immune
cells more active so they're ready to fight off infection," says Cath Collins, a chief dietician at St.

To encourage a greater bike mode share, our solution is to create an app called "Bykes" that would
be used as an aide to bikers whenever they wanted to plan bike trips and ride along routes. The main
feature of the app is that it will route bike riders from their origin to their destination while keeping
them on designated bike lanes and trails as much as possible. The service will ask each user what
their comfort level is before the route is chosen, and then the algorithm will choose a path that best
reflects this comfort level. With a more experienced biker, the service will route them on a more

This will allow the roads to be rated on actual users' experiences and allow for iteration of the
quality of these roads over time. The comfort rating will be dynamic instead of static. In addition to
this survey, users can also input the location of specific hazards along bike routes. This includes
hazards such as potholes or obstacles in the path, a rough pavement condition, construction, and
more. Construction was one of the more prominent issues that arose in our Google Form survey,
which makes sense because construction normally occurs at the edges of the roadway, which is
where bike lanes are often located. An example of this is seen in Figure 3. Figure 3: Construction

History of Police Bike Patrol:
Over one hundred years ago, police departments routinely patrolled cities and towns by bicycle. The
bike was tremendously popular only until the advent of the automobile. The bicycle then
disappeared from policing. It wasn't until the late 1980's that the bicycle made a comeback. In 1988,
Sergeant Paul Grady of the Seattle Police Department convinced his superiors that mountain bikes
could be a viable patrol vehicle in the congested downtown area, waterfront parks, and market
districts. Seattle believed that the bicycle could prove to be an invaluable tool. They were faced with
problems such as vehicle congestion, vagrants, gang activity, purse snatchings, and auto burglaries.

Problem Oriented Patrols are accomplished by concerted and consistent enforcement in four steps.
1. Identification of problems and problem areas.
2. Developing alternatives to solve the problem.
3. Initiating corrective action.
4. Evaluating operational success.
Problem Identification:
Initially the objective is to identify problem areas, and groups. Develop intelligence on when, where,
and how the problem is occurring. Reviewing calls for service, incident reports, interviewing and
utilizing surveillance helps determine violation patterns.
Developing Solutions:
Based on the information gathered in the first phase, a plan is developed using creative methods, and
concentrated efforts to target the causes of the problem. An effective way of developing solutions is
to hold a brainstorming session with field personnel. Develop a list of options, then evaluate each
option for success potential. An action plan should be developed from this idea, utilizing patrol
methods, which will be most efficient.
Taking Action:
The third phase is

Swot Analysis Of Mac Ride
1.0 Introduction
In this capstone integrated project report, the project team explored the firm Ride More Innovations
Ltd. (RMI) and its first product, Mac Ride . Mac Ride is a unique, front mounted, child seat for
mountain bicycles. This report begins by analyzing the child bike seat industry. Subsequently, RMI's
current strategy, potential markets and competitors across various geographical locations are
investigated in detail. Based on this analysis, different strategies are analyzed before a final
recommendation is suggested. The report also includes an implementation guide for the
recommended strategy as well as a description of the finance required to execute the strategy and
expected results of the strategy execution.

Accordingly, the child can participate in the ride, stand on the stirrups, all while having fun and
learning about balance and speed. Additionally, parents benefit by having the opportunity to have a
real conversation with his/her child without distractions or having to continually look back. Mac
Ride facilitates a closer connection between parents and children in their bicycle riding experience.
Mac Ride seats are easy to set up and suitable for off–road riding, and, therefore, support an active,
engaged experience for children. Once the Mac Ride seat is removed, the only thing left on the bike
is a small spacer ring which blends into the bicycle design and may go completely unnoticed. Easy
removal and installation also allows parents to exchange the Mac Ride child seat quickly so parents
may take turns exploring and sharing their bicycling adventure with their child.
There do exist conventional front mounted bicycle children's seats. However, they have limited
space and children quickly outgrow the plastic seats which are usually clunky, aesthetically
unpleasing, and difficult to maintain. However, Mac Ride has extendable legs and a movable seat,
allowing children to use the seat for a longer duration than other conventional front mounted seats.
Depending on the size of the bike and height of the rider, children as old as 6 can easily use and
have fun with Mac Ride.
Furthermore, other front mounted child carriers often force the

THE KICKSTARTER WONDER: SEATYLOCK
What is Seatylock?
In case you're wondering what this product is all about, well, wonder no more. Seatylock is a
bicycle, but not just like any other bicycle. It's a unique and revolutionary product designed to
change the lives and careers of cyclists in the urban regions through the provision of a new level of
convenience that guarantee secure bicycle locking. While various media reports opine that about 1.5
million bicycles are stolen every year, an FBI report in 2013 stated that an estimated 194, 549
bicycle theft are reported yearly.
A February 2014 report by SFGate.com surmised that, bicycle riding by the Bay–City have risen
dramatically, with an estimated number of about 75,000 cyclists taken to the streets every year.
During this same period, the level of bicycle theft has gone overboard; with city analyst estimating
that bicycle theft has increased by 70%. Similar statistical studies and findings are popping up all
across the United States, where it can be rightly concluded that bicycles thieves are getting bolder,
while the owners appears to have run out of ideas in tackling the menace. ... Show more content on

Rolling in the Street
Rolling in the Street In May 2013, Major Bloomberg launched a new bicycle program to have an
additional mode of transportation for the citizens and visitors of New York City. The Department of
Transportation chose to have a Public Private Partnership with Alta Bicycle Share over a fully public
operated system in order to have an effective and faster delivery of the project. In addition, Citibank
paid $41 million and Master Card $6 million to be the title sponsors for the bike–share program.
Although supporters of the bike–sharing program are hopeful Citi Bike will reduce congestion and
boost public health by active transportation, in a big city like New York, only a selected part of the
population will be enjoying the benefits. This paper aims at addressing how public–private
partnerships effectively increase the level of production and efficiency, but negatively affect other
important sectors of the economy. Presently, the key stakeholders are the government, the suppliers
of the bikes, the employees, the costumers and the community. Each of these groups contributes in
some way and has their own opinions, views and suggestions for the project. These stakeholders are
crucial for Citi Bike and therefore their interests must be recognized in order to facilitate the
development of the project. The Department of Transportation's (DOT) main interest is to provide

VELIB, PARIS Essay
1. Introduction
Nowadays, transportation in urban area is highly complex as it involved various modes of
transportation, locations of the origins and destination and also the population of that particular
urban area. The focus of urban transport has been more on passengers as many major cities were
viewed as locations of utmost human interactions. Mostly, they move from one place to other place
for the purpose of commuting, commercial transactions, leisure or for cultural activities. Beside,
urban passenger transport system is one of the medium helping to have better quality of life for
every living community. It provides personal mobility and freedom for people to walk, use para–

Naturally, as with every innovation, it will take to adapt and I have to emphasis that the rules must
be respected where necessary to ensure the safety of everyone, especially the most vuinerable
among us, pedestrians and cyclist!"
Bertrand Delanoe, Mayor of Paris.
(Quoted shortly after the inauguration of the Vélib system, July 2007.)
According to his inauguration, the Vélib system appoints the need of both personalized and mobility
and low carbon solutions for urban transport passenger system. The main modal for this system is to
provide low environments that reduce the impact of mobility service for large cities and urban
centers. For this application, Vélib use Cyclocity as the basic ideas to be user friendly as possible.
The main components of the system are the bike, the stations where they are attached and the
software that can track the bikes journey and the rental time of each journey made. One of the
common rationales cited by bike programs is that they provide an effective substitute for at least
some of the large numbers of short distance trips made by cars in urban areas, often with only one
person in the car. Such trips make poor use of scarce public resources, and of course carry with them
a heavy environmental burden.
If many passengers tend to use private vehicle, this objective cannot be achieved. However Paris has
been established as one of the country that

Essay on Physical Activity in the US
The level of the population's level of physical activity is becoming a major public health concern in
the United States (Wahlgren, 2011). As a result of urban sprawl, Americans rely heavily on personal
vehicles to travel to work or other destinations. This is leading to a sedentary life style for the public
as they take to their cars to travel to their destination. The public's perception of the environments in
which they live in are likely influencing their behaviors resulting in their dependance on personal
vehicles. (Wahlgren, 2011). The physical environment and peoples' levels of physical activity are
directly connected. Low density zoning and auto–dependent development is resulting in the
promotion of sedentary life styles. Most ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
By supporting existing communities, community values, redeveloping underutilized sites, and
developing livability measures, smart growth helps to establish an environment that people can
enjoy walking and not feel unsafe within the community (Ewing, 2010). The principles of smart
growth is to establish a sustainable community that residents have access to businesses, work and a
safe place to raise their families. Through the implementation of mixed land use, residential density,
street connectivity, and physical infrastructure the community will establish itself as an area that is
closely associated with other areas viewed as being highly walk–able for both residents and visitors
(Wahlgren, 2011). In order to achieve a smart growth design, safety requirements must be addressed
for pedestrians and bicyclists. However, current designs intended to address safety needs for
motorists and pedestrians are at odds with each other. Community street design is evident of an out
dated design guidance on roadways. Currently the selection of a roadway's design speed determines
the design of the roadway's geometric features. Roadways with higher speeds tend to maintain a
larger lane width, wider clear zones, and longer–sight lines for drivers (Dumbaugh, 2011). Current
traffic safety theory, passive safety, emerged during the 1950s and 1960s when safety advocates

The Importance Of Bicycle And Helmet Safety
People ride bikes for various reasons. Some people ride bikes for fitness purposes, some ride bikes
to get from place to place, and some ride bikes to clear their mind after having a long day. Whether
you ride for fun or for sport it is important to know the factors that go into bicycle and helmet safety.
A study in 2014 shows that 103.7 million people rode a bike that year and 34 percent of Americans
age three or older rode a bike at least once in that year ("Study: 103.7 Million Americans Ride
Bikes"). The importance of bicycle safety cannot be underestimated. According to the 2008
Alabama Traffic Crash Facts, there were 182 bicycle crash injuries and four fatalities. In 2008,
children 14 and under accounted for 27% of the bicycle crash injuries. Bicycle helmets are 85% –
88% effective in preventing head and brain injuries; however, only 20% – 25% of all bicyclists wear
bicycle helmets ("Bicycle Safety"). One of the first factors that go into bicycle and helmet safety is
learning how to ride a bike. Many people learn how to ride a bike when they are four or five years
old and some do not learn until they are older (Donaldson). Learning how to ride a bike is the first
and most important step because without knowing how to ride a bike you will not know what type
of bike you will need.
The first step when learning how to ride a bike is to make sure you are in a suitable location.
Starting off on grass or smooth gravel helps since falls there hurt less. These surfaces make

Analytical Essay 'Bicycle Safety On Essex'
Bicycle safety on Essex The following analytical essay will analyze and interpret issues that are
interesting, puzzling and controversial in the short story "Bicycle Safety on Essex". The essay will
mainly deal with issues such as racism and racial prejudice, which are either interesting, puzzling
and controversial. First, there's the interesting issue with Cleve. According to Noah, the humiliating
event in Essex was not the first time Cleve was questioned by the authorities. This can be seen in the
following quote "If you fucking assholes arrest him again one more time just because he's black and
I'm not, I'm going to kill myself!". This shows that Noah, at such a young age, knows that Cleve is
being detained and questioned by officers based only on his skin color, which in fact can be called
racial prejudice. Although it is unfortunate for Cleve and Noah, it is quite uncommon for a dreaded
black man to walk around with a small white boy and especially at night. ... Show more content on

The most puzzling part of the story is how the narrator ended up sitting in the back of a civilian
police car and his description of the two police officers. This can be seen in the following quote
"And I'd spent all night in this bogus taxi with about 850 pounds of white beef". In this quotation,
the narrator tells us that he has spent the whole night in a "bogus taxi" with two police officers
which he describes as "white beef". This bursts his objective view throughout the story, therefore
making him a subjective narrator. A point which has not been mentioned yet is how the police had
allowed a writer to ride with undercover officers, which is very puzzling since the writer can

Environment And Social Environment
Social environment of an individual is defined by "living and working environment of one person
and community characteristics and able to be "experienced at numerous scales, frequently at the
same time, including households, kin networks, neighborhoods, town, cities and regions". This
includes historical and authority relationships within communities. Schwanen and Mokhtarian

second concept has been used to see the sights mode choice in the situation of residential self–

Let's Put an End to Parking Problems!
I would like to see the parking and traffic crunch on and around this campus eased. Unless a student
arrives before 8 o'clock in the morning or in the afternoon, cruising the parking lots or streets for a
place to park is routine. Even buying a parking sticker does not mean you will have the privilege of
a space. Competition for spaces during the rush hours of 9 A.M. to 11 A.M. is cutthroat. Would–be
parkers stake out sections of a parking row and sit in their cars hoping someone in their section will
leave. The other ploy is to try and catch someone who is just walking back to their car in order to
plead for that space. lf these tricks fail, the only thing left is to park far away on ... Show more

In other words, make it convenient for car poolers. In this same vein, buses or vans could be run to
outlying areas which have large numbers of Northridge students as residents. Charge a fee which
would be less than the student is now paying in parking fees and gas. If the buses or vans were
advertised in the paper to increase student interest and if they were run at convenient times, I am
sure many students would take advantage of the opportunity.
A somewhat different tack would be to encourage bicycle riding and/or walking. Many students
living close to campus still drive when they could be bicycling. Making the roads safer for bikers is
of major concern and unsafe conditions are the reasons given by many who do not ride. Providing
bicycle lanes on all streets around the campus would be extremely beneficial. This would decrease
contact with the faster moving traffic. Adding more bicycle stands on campus which are secure
would also encourage bike riding. Perhaps courses on bike riding safety could be conducted on
campus. Again, advertising of the new bike lanes and bike facilities would encourage more people
to ride. Also advertising the health benefits of riding or walking should increase the number of
students who will take advantage of this inexpensive means of transportation.
There are several reasons why this change is both

Essay about Urban Planning: The History of Cycling...
URBAN PLANNING BIKE PATHS
Introduction to the work
The history of cycling infrastructure begins shortly after the so–called "bike boom" of the 1880's
when the beginning short stretches of dedicated bicycle paths were constructed, through to the rise
of the automobile from the middle of the 20th century onwards towards the simultaneous decline of
cycling as a means of transport, till cycling's comeback starting from the 1970s onwards. By the end
of the 19th century, cycling had grown from a simple hobby of a few to an established form of
transport for many. Cyclists at that time campaigned to improve the existing bike paths, which were
often poorly textured roads and tracks. The first bicycle paths were built around ... Show more

Methodology to be implemented in the work
A general survey of the studied area is implemented in order to help detect the obstacles affecting
the continuity of a connected bike infrastructure, and to define solutions to these problems.
Maps sourced from Google maps were used along with direct visits to the studied area. Paths were
studied and documented using photos and notes to observe the circulation in the area and what each
path offers in terms of obstacles and possibilities for integrating bike paths into the city. Factors
examined included bike lanes, topography, distance from downtown, demographics, and population
density.
After studying the problems faced, I looked into other projects with problems similar in category
and scale in order to find the best possible solutions, and researched all possible variations of bike
paths and technologies in this field while adjusting them to the case study area.
Benefits of integrating bike paths in to the city The bike paths will attract more people to cycling
which has many health benefits, aside from being a sport such as aerobic fitness, heart, circulatory,
joints, and weight control, it results in a lower number of cars driving on the street lowering the
amount of noise and air pollution. Cycling will result in areas where people will gather such as
shops or resting areas which benefit the social aspect of the city leading

Bicycles Are Used All Around The World
Bicycles are utilized all around the world. Some are designed purely for speed on the road. Others
are designed for sturdiness off of the road. People ride bicycles for various reasons, such as:
competition, fitness, and recreation. Further, when considering bicycles that are used for traveling,
specifically commuting to and from work, the two key features of the bicycle that should be
considered are comfort and speed. However, once an appropriate bicycle is designed and developed,
the next step in the marketing process is testing the product. The market testing strategy that is being
tested for this bicycle prototype involves test marketing the bike and marketing program in one or
two urban areas with large commuting populations before beginning manufacturing, promoting, and
distributing the bike on a national scale. The goal of the market testing strategy is to garner results
that provide information which will help the marketing team make a more successful national
launch. This strategy is common, and will have multitudinous benefits as well as inevitable
disadvantages that may or may not outweigh the advantages.
The marketing team's sanguine expectations of test marketing the bicycle are determining whether
or not the current design adequately satisfies the needs of the average commuter. In determining if
the market testing strategy will assist the success of the product launch, it is more important to
figure out if the testing will provide adequate information for the

The benefits of bicycling for one's fitness and health are obvious. Any type of normal exercise
regimen, followed weekly, is good for an individual's long–term health. Exercise is beneficial for the

I have been an avid bicyclist for over 30 years. Instead of receiving keys to a car on my 16th

college, I would have about five weeks off in between the time that school got out upon the
completion of semester finals, and when I would start my job as a summer camp counselor. During
that five week period, instead of sitting on the couch daily and watching television for hours at a
time, I simply got out my bike and rode around the outskirts of the town that I lived in at the time.
My normal route was about 25–30 miles. It involved climbing several hills, but after each workout I
felt invigorated.

Parent Advice Column: Bicycle Helmet Safety
Ariel Warren
New York University College of Nursing
October 28, 2015
Abstract
Children and adolescents have the highest rate of bicycle injuries of all age groups; less than half of
children who ride bikes wear a helmet regularly. In this advice column, Procheska's theoretical
framework is paired with Erikson's developmental model to apply the risk of helmet misuse in a
pediatric patient case study. A retrospective cohort study was analyzed to determine evidence of
pediatric head injuries sustained from lack of helmet use. The results of the study show that pediatric
patients who do not wear helmets are indeed at increased risk of serious head injuries. Pediatric
Nurse Practitioners working with children and adolescents of all ages who ride bicycles can use the
findings and evidence from this advice column to provide helmet safety education and information
to children and parents in their practice.

INTRODUCTION:
In my research I will discuss with you about some interesting invention is the Bicycle. The bicycle
is the means of transportation more prevalent around the world. In the past the bike was used as
primary form of daily transportation. After many years the people start to use this invention for
children to play and have a fun. But nowadays, the people developed and used the bike as a sport

when I ride it, and because the bicycle is a safety transport and easier to use than other

What Is The Paradoxical Relationship Between The Health...
I plan to study the paradoxical relationship between the health benefits of safe cycling infrastructure
and the claim that it promotes gentrification and drives the communities it is intended to serve
further into the peripheries of cycling friendly cities. In November 2016, Austin voters passed
Proposition I, which granted $137 million dollars to improve sidewalks and urban pathways1.
Among opponents of improving cycling infrastructure in East Austin, many pointed out that bicycle
lanes would increase the growing pressures of gentrification on the lower income members of the
community. This fear accompanied the claim that minorities and lower income residents of East
Austin do not use bicycles for transportation, and that the lanes would ... Show more content on

I am personally interested in this topic because I believe that access to environments that promote
healthy lifestyles should not be restricted to the wealthy, and that city governments should
concentrate on increasing bike–ability and walkability in lower income neighborhoods. Several
studies have shown replacing car travel with cycling and walking decreases obesity and increases
overall health5, and one study in Kansas even showed a significant decrease in employee healthcare
costs following investments in local cycling programs3. However, before interest groups launch
advocacy and infrastructure expansion, it is important that they understand the effects of that
expansion, and integrate consideration for future housing affordability into their plans.
Population (Inclusion/ Exclusion Criteria)
Through my capstone research, I hope to shed light on the three–way relationship between bicycle
lanes, community health, and gentrification. To do this, I plan to find primary research that helps me
answer the following questions.
1. How does the addition of bicycle lanes affect community economics and growth?
2. Has research shown a correlation between the addition of bicycle lanes and gentrification?
3. How does bicycle lane availability differ in low income and high income

Walk Your Wheels: The Danger of Bicycles in Pedestrian Sidewalks
I glance down at my phone for a moment and I realize that my 15–minute margin of travel time to
race across campus to my class is dwindling; I look up only to find an individual on a bicycle
hurdling toward me, clearly, incapable of stopping in time, I scramble out of the way in an attempt
to save myself from becoming roadkill. This is a common occurrence for student pedestrians on
their way to class given the increasing number of bicyclists and skateboarders that refrain from
following university transportation laws, however, instead of criminalizing the act of using these
modes of transportation on pedestrian sidewalks the university should make it safer and more
efficient for these individuals to share the roads with cars by installing bicycle lanes. This issue is
important to all campus residents, since the incorrect use of transportation could jeopardize their
safety and should be carefully considered in order to prevent accidents. This proposal argument will
aim at persuading university officials, specifically those in charge of the university transportation
services, to reconsider their handling of bicycle and other non–motorized transportation rules and
safety on campus. There are many rules that bicyclists and other alternative transportation users
must follow, for example, "bicycles [are] not [to] be ridden on sidewalks or any pedestrian paths in

A Modest Proposal To Visit

  • 1. A Modest Proposal To Visit The purpose of this letter is to ask that you read the enclosed proposal about putting bike lanes in the City of Manhattan. Currently, in the City of Manhattan doesn't have enough bike lanes in town where bicyclists can ride safely on the road. While the bike lanes might not currently have high traffic, adding more will increase the use of the current ones. It is a challenge as a bicyclist when bike lanes are not on every road throughout the city. For example, when bicyclists ride down or up Casement Road and on Westwood Rd meets with Fort Riley Blvd, the road starts off wide enough for both a car and a bicyclist. The lane shrinks, so there's only room for a car, which leaves bicyclist in an awkward position with nowhere to go since bikes shouldn't be on the sidewalks. When bicyclists ride around Manhattan, they know how much it gets them moving and ready to tackle a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... And having bike lanes also keeps citizens from the nearby neighborhood from riding on the sidewalks, which is illegal for them to ride on. Given that at least half of the bicyclists never use the bike paths, I am advocating for bike lanes, particularly on the uphill side of the road. Simply adding 2 feet of pavement and minimizing the ditch alongside the road will both maximize bicycle safety and minimize cost. I believe that the bike lane is needed to keep them safe. In the winter, the bike lane will help keep cars from getting stuck in the ditch after snowstorms when it is virtually impossible to tell where the road ends and the ditch begins. When there are more bikes around, people drive safe and when there are more bikes around, people drive safer and are aware of them. The more bicyclists we see, the safer the roads are going to be for them. I think Manhattan should be doing everything it can to encourage people to bike safe and make the city a safer place to bike ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 5. Disadvantages Of Bicyclist Bicyclists seem to want all the same privileges as a motor vehicle but not the responsibility. I have not only witnessed numerous instances of bicyclists running stop signs, but also experienced a near accident caused by a cyclist running a stop sign. There could be numerous reasons why bicyclists run stop signs. One could be that they are completely unaware of traffic laws. It also could be that they don't want to lose momentum by stopping and having to start again, or they simply don't care. No matter the reason, they're endangering the other people on the road. I find this very concerning and dangerous. If cyclists want to be treated equally with motor vehicles, they should realize that they must also follow the same laws and face the same penalties. When you strap on you're helmet and straddle you're bike you're now legally responsible to follow the same rules of the road as an automobile. When living in a large metropolitan city, there are an extreme amount of cars on the streets. This contributes to smog, emissions, and a huge carbon footprint on mother earth. People are thankful for others who take this into consideration and ride bicycles instead of driving, but this doesn't make the bicyclist a better person, even though some of them act like it. Living in a small town that may have only a few intersections with stoplights or stop signs, one may feel freer to break the rules of the road, and the consequences are less harmful. When you run through a stop sign in a ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 9. Disadvantages Of Cycling Cycling could be a solution to personal, social, environmental and economic problems experienced in developed countries. When investigating and studying the benefits of cycling, it can be difficult to find an area where the benefits are as transparent as they are to our natural environment. Obvious advantages may include saving money and improving your health. Just as history repeats itself, cycling around town should be the old way forward! Exercise is one of the best ways to deal with psychological problems, such as common problems such as stress or rather more serious issues such as depression or anxiety. Regular exercise reduces stress levels, improves a person's sleep patterns, improves concentration and releases endorphins, ultimately giving you a better outlook on life. Cycling also liberates you and gives you the freedom that we need, living in our fast moving world. There are also social benefits to cycling, when cycling within a group. When we ride in a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Our drastic climate change and oil peak are the two biggest environmental issues we face today. Scientists around the world have been sending warning signals for years, sadly society and governments only now that the effects can be physically seen have started to take notice. Cycling the most energy efficient form of transportation ever invented. Cycling reduces air pollution as the use of a bicycle has virtually no carbon footprint. It reduces water pollution by means of no brake fluid, anti–freeze or transmission fluids flowing into water systems. Cycling also reduces the amount of noise pollution, as cars and especially taxis go around hooting all day, whereas bicycles bring a calm and tranquil way of life. Less oil pumping: with the reduced use of cars, we are less reliant on petrol, this therefore decreases the demand on pumping oil from our scared resourced ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 13. What Affects Safety When Riding Bicycle Safety is a very ambiguous term that refers to a condition of being protected or being free of risk or danger [72]. The truth is that there is no such thing as being 100% safe. Every action that a person takes or can take possesses a degree of risk. People tend not to think about risk unless they are doing something "extreme" or out of the ordinary. Nevertheless, many daily activities that people do have a high degree of risk but are often overlooked because they are daily activities. A perfect example of this is bicycling. Unlike cars and other transportation vehicles, bicycles do not have a "factor of safety". There are no bumpers, airbags, or corrugating metals that will break a fall or prevent someone from getting injured. Even the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... External factors are usually the cause of crashes because people don't or can't see them coming, and in most cases there is almost no time to react. No one rides a bicycle expecting a car to hit them any second or expecting their tire to blow out. Nevertheless, it is essential to consider every possible factor that may affect the rider and design a product that limits any type of bicycle accident. The goal of this project is to identify the most common crash scenarios for cyclist with motor vehicles and create a device that prevents them from happening. The following section will review different crash scenarios as well as the internal and external factors that affected the outcome of these scenarios. 2.2.2 Literature Survey 2.2.2.1 Patents Safety Light Device (US 8325027 B2) One patent that was different was one that projected a bike lane onto the road. The apparatus would be mounted on the bicycle, and the light sources would emit a light beam on the left and the right of the bike in order to emulate a bike lane as shown below in Figure 11 [73]. Figure 11: Light Beam Patent There were no patents that would use sensors, or an app for that matter, in order to help improve a rider 's safety while on a bike in the daytime as well as the nighttime. • 17. Persuasive Essay On Bicycle Safety It has been asserted many times by mothers and law enforcement that people should use a bicycle helmet, but many ignore the tip and increase the danger they face on a bike. Surprisingly in California only those under 18 must wear a helmet (Coalition), but even adults should wear them as the chance of injury increases when riding without one. The reasons why those under 18 have to wear a helmet are reasonable as the organization KidsHealth in the article "Bike safety" informs people that "Every year, about 300,000 kids go to the emergency department because of bike injuries, and at least 10,000 kids have injuries that require a few days in the hospital. Some of these injuries are so serious that children die, usually from head injuries". Death is a big reason to cause the law to require kids to wear helmet, so all cyclists who wish to ride safely should wear a helmet regardless of age. It is such an important piece of gear that bicycle safety is almost impossible to think of without also thinking about a bike helmet. As in D. K. Howe's article "Bicycle Safety" the United States Safety Administration provides the tip, "Wear a properly fitted helmet. It is the single most important piece of safety equipment you can use". Now that the importance of following laws and wearing a helmet have been addressed, it is time bicyclist are aware of keeping a well maintained bike to lower the amount of accidents even more. Safety is not all about keeping the head secured and knowing what ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

There are 5 basic types of emotions. These emotions are universal for people from different cultures. The basic emotions are joy, fear, anger, sadness and disgust. Other emotions are derived from these basic emotions. Differences between positive and negative emotions can easily be distinguished, joy is positive and fear is negative for example. Just 4% of the Jaffna cyclists experiences cycling as something negative. From the Jaffna cyclists, 67% associated cycling with joy. The relation found was that positive emotions have a positive effect on the experience of safety and negative emotions have a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This clearly says that most of the cyclists in Jaffna have enough skill (physical ability, experience) to use the bicycle for commuting. They have more experiences and practices on cycling which is becoming since their childhood period. The city topography (slopes) also is an aspect that prevents them from using the bicycle to commute. Figure: 4.24, Willingness to overcome when cycling by gender Women have only 30 percent of power to overcome issues when they ride cycle but at the same time men have 70 percent of knowledge to handling the issues related cycling. This clearly says that men have more practices and experiences than women in Jaffna Cycling culture. (See Figure: 4.24) Within experience of a journey, Comfort and speed are important which are influenced by the qualities of the built environment but also other factors play a role. Comfort refers as convenience and safety aspects, which includes for example pavement quality, a scenic environment and little traffic. (See Table, 4.5) Speed refers to travel time for the cyclist. In this study, the ways in which people experience comfort and speed are expressed. Study found that the most important determinant of cycling for women was their 'level of comfort bicycling'. Although men experienced the high discomfort on average as women, they were more likely to state that they would ride anyway, whereas women said they would not. These Cardio gyms are now known to maintain weight. Cycling can boost your overall fitness condition. Because it is an intense cardio exercise that works the entire body at once. Day by day numbers of indoor and outdoor cyclist are increasing, to archive this massive health benefits. Stationary Bikes are the safest riding then outdoor cycling. Here we listed some common cycling injuries and their cures. Are There Common Cycling Injuries? "My right knee just started hurting about 4 days ago. I am having sharp pains on the lateral side of my knee. I had to bike the last couple days with just my left leg, which (wasn't a good thing)! Hopefully, it will be better tomorrow!" David Shirley, taking a few days off in Portland, Oregon. Asking the question implies the answer; of course, cycling has its list of common injuries, which are amplified when a cyclist rides cross country over a period of several months–– which is the situation with David. Head Injuries Head injuries are common among bicyclists who do not wear helmets, which come as no surprise, considering it is not that difficult to hit a pothole while gazing at scenery or to be hit by a cell phone obsessed driver. About 540,000 cyclists in the U.S. visit the emergency room each year, and of those, 67,000 have head injuries. Advantages And Disadvantages Of Sharing System The development situation of sharing system "Sharing system",which was a brand–new concept appeard in 2015 has already become a fashionable life style. Most people, especially those in first–tier cities may have an intensive feeling that sharing system brings too much conveniece and low cost for their daily life, such as shared bicycles.Besides, not only shared bicycles, but some other forms has begun to arise. For example, because of the difficuty for finding a fixed parking lot and the high cost of parking cars,an application named "Searching for Parking Spaces" or in Chinese "Zhao Che Wei" was developed by a science and technology compony, this APP can help people find a shareable parking space by inputting one's cellphone number, driving license number and how much time they need.In addition, an umbrella–sharing business has come into being in Shanghai and even shared laundries has appeard in some cities. Transport By Bicycle May Seem To Be A Thing Of The Past Transport by bicycle may seem to be a thing of the past but benefits associated with the trend continue to give hope to those who see it as a means of daily transport. In the United states, majority of the population consider cycling as a means of recreation and for leisure; and so most people don't consider bicycles as a mode of transportation. Cycling is for everyone of all shapes, sizes, and age. Over the years, America has learned to depend solely on cars and trucks, which operate on fossil fuel for transportation needs. Coronary Artery Disease statistically, is the most prevalent cause of death in American for both men and women, causing 600,000 deaths annually, which comes to about 1 in every 4 deaths, males > females. The estimated economic cost of Coronary artery disease in the United States is $109 billion per annum. Which will also include costs of medications, ER admissions and healthcare services (Cassar, Gersh, Holmes, & Rihal, 2009). Bicycling can help profit the same betterment in physical performance as other specific training programs, and cycling at a proportionally low intensity for just 30 minutes a day and at least 3 times weekly can increase life expectancy by several years (Hendriksen, Zuiderveld, Kemper, & Bezemer, 2000). Although positive health results cannot be attributed to biking alone, notwithstanding, the benefits of amalgamating exercise and physical activity into one's day–to–day lifestyle is incontrovertible. The air is cool with early morning fog. Doris leads and I follow. Her pace is faster than usual. No problem. I ride my bike to ride my bike. I have a low–keyed Friday: I've scheduled a pitch meeting at eleven with a new writer. The agent I met recently said his client "Thinks out of the box." I would rather that and am keen to meet him. There's an hour before, so I print a copy of the development report. I read through, and highlight in yellow, the screenplays in limbo. I note what the problems are with the script/writer in a footnote at the bottom of the page. And further, I highlight in red the screenplays that Thom has already axed. The remaining projects in active development, I highlight in green. By lunch time, I'm starved. I drive to an In–N–Out for a cheeseburger with no bun and wrapped just in lettuce. I skip the fries and have a large diet coke. The meal is not guilt free because I order a chocolate shake to go. I just won't tell Doris about it. The balance of the afternoon I read a fantasy script filled numerous plot twists where love, betrayal and redemption co–exist. The rich dialogue and lustful passion take me on a wild ride. (Click) In Australia, cars accounted for 48% of transport emissions in 2013 (Trends in transport greenhouse gas emissions, 2013). However to combat this issue, many cities around the world have actively discouraged the use of private motor vehicles when travelling in and around the city. They aim to reduce the prevalence of cars through the promotion of bicycles, walking and public transport. In Europe, two cities have successfully implemented strategies and campaigns to increase the amount of bicycle travel in and around the cities centre, these are Copenhagen and Houten. The aim of this presentation is to investigate cities where car travel has been discouraged and hence decreased and if and how these strategies can be adopted in Brisbane. Brisbane Brisbane is the third most populous city in Australia and capital of Queensland accommodating over 2.3 million people, thus it serves as an excellent basis to introduce a regime targeting at reduced carbon emissions through a decrease in car use. The Bicycles Changed America Essay The Bicycles Changed America The great changes in American society that came with the introduction bicycle in the late 19th century are often overshadowed by the influence of the automobile in the following decades. Today, bicycles are often seen as an alternative mode of transportation – a cleaner and more environmentally conscious form of travel. Because of this, it may be difficult to realize the incredible modernizing effects that bicycles had on American society when they were first introduced. (Smith, 1972, pp 4) The next major development came with the acquisition of pedals. In 1855, the first bicycle with pedals, the velocipede, was invented and became briefly popular when it was brought to the United States. Because of the ride provided by its iron tires and wooden frame, the velocipede became known as "the Boneshaker." The excitement around the velocipede died off within a few years, however, as it proved to be difficult to ride, expensive, and dangerous. During the second half of the 19th century, most of the major improvements were made that allowed for the invention of modern bicycles. An iron frame rather than a wooden one, rubber tires (solid rubber, however), rubber–coated pedals and steel rims were all developed during this time. Although the new bicycles, known as "Ordinaries," had one wheel much larger than the other, were difficult to mount and dismount, had no brakes, and were expensive, they became much more popular than any of the previous ancestral bicycles. The main feature of the app is that it will route bike riders from their origin to their destination while keeping them on designated bike lanes and trails as much as possible. The service will ask each user what their comfort level is before the route is chosen, and then the algorithm will choose a path that best reflects this comfort level. The comfort rating will be dynamic instead of static. In addition to this survey, users can also input the location of specific hazards along bike routes. This includes hazards such as potholes or obstacles in the path, a rough pavement condition, construction, and more. Construction was one of the more prominent issues that arose in our Google Form survey, which makes sense because construction normally occurs at the edges of the roadway, which is where bike lanes are often located. An example of this is seen in Figure 3. Figure 3: Construction blocking a bike lane (Gatoona 2012). It's important to take these obstacles into account when routing bikers, because the hazards will often cause the riders to swerve into traffic, which will not provide for a safe and comfortable biking experience. Sources of Data Initially, the roads will need to be evaluated for their comfort levels so they can be properly matched with bikers that need a certain minimum comfort level. Two methods can be used to assist in this evaluation: Bike Level of Service (BLOS) and Level of Traffic Stress (LTS). In 1988, Sergeant Paul Grady of the Seattle Police Department convinced his superiors that mountain bikes could be a viable patrol vehicle in the congested downtown area, waterfront parks, and market districts. Bertrand Delanoe, Mayor of Paris. (Quoted shortly after the inauguration of the Vélib system, July 2007.) According to his inauguration, the Vélib system appoints the need of both personalized and mobility and low carbon solutions for urban transport passenger system. The main modal for this system is to provide low environments that reduce the impact of mobility service for large cities and urban centers. For this application, Vélib use Cyclocity as the basic ideas to be user friendly as possible. The main components of the system are the bike, the stations where they are attached and the software that can track the bikes journey and the rental time of each journey made. One of the common rationales cited by bike programs is that they provide an effective substitute for at least some of the large numbers of short distance trips made by cars in urban areas, often with only one person in the car. Such trips make poor use of scarce public resources, and of course carry with them a heavy environmental burden. If many passengers tend to use private vehicle, this objective cannot be achieved. This is leading to a sedentary life style for the public as they take to their cars to travel to their destination. The public's perception of the environments in which they live in are likely influencing their behaviors resulting in their dependance on personal vehicles. (Wahlgren, 2011). By supporting existing communities, community values, redeveloping underutilized sites, and developing livability measures, smart growth helps to establish an environment that people can enjoy walking and not feel unsafe within the community (Ewing, 2010). The principles of smart growth is to establish a sustainable community that residents have access to businesses, work and a safe place to raise their families. Through the implementation of mixed land use, residential density, street connectivity, and physical infrastructure the community will establish itself as an area that is closely associated with other areas viewed as being highly walk–able for both residents and visitors (Wahlgren, 2011). In order to achieve a smart growth design, safety requirements must be addressed for pedestrians and bicyclists. However, current designs intended to address safety needs for motorists and pedestrians are at odds with each other. Community street design is evident of an out dated design guidance on roadways. Currently the selection of a roadway's design speed determines the design of the roadway's geometric features. Roadways with higher speeds tend to maintain a larger lane width, wider clear zones, and longer–sight lines for drivers (Dumbaugh, 2011). • 98. The Importance Of Bicycle And Helmet Safety People ride bikes for various reasons. Some people ride bikes for fitness purposes, some ride bikes to get from place to place, and some ride bikes to clear their mind after having a long day. Whether you ride for fun or for sport it is important to know the factors that go into bicycle and helmet safety. A study in 2014 shows that 103.7 million people rode a bike that year and 34 percent of Americans age three or older rode a bike at least once in that year ("Study: 103.7 Million Americans Ride Bikes"). The importance of bicycle safety cannot be underestimated. According to the 2008 Alabama Traffic Crash Facts, there were 182 bicycle crash injuries and four fatalities. In 2008, children 14 and under accounted for 27% of the bicycle crash injuries. Bicycle helmets are 85% – 88% effective in preventing head and brain injuries; however, only 20% – 25% of all bicyclists wear bicycle helmets ("Bicycle Safety"). One of the first factors that go into bicycle and helmet safety is learning how to ride a bike. Many people learn how to ride a bike when they are four or five years old and some do not learn until they are older (Donaldson). Learning how to ride a bike is the first and most important step because without knowing how to ride a bike you will not know what type of bike you will need. According to Noah, the humiliating event in Essex was not the first time Cleve was questioned by the authorities. This can be seen in the following quote "If you fucking assholes arrest him again one more time just because he's black and I'm not, I'm going to kill myself!". This shows that Noah, at such a young age, knows that Cleve is being detained and questioned by officers based only on his skin color, which in fact can be called racial prejudice. Unless a student arrives before 8 o'clock in the morning or in the afternoon, cruising the parking lots or streets for a place to park is routine. Even buying a parking sticker does not mean you will have the privilege of a space. Competition for spaces during the rush hours of 9 A.M. to 11 A.M. is cutthroat. Would–be parkers stake out sections of a parking row and sit in their cars hoping someone in their section will leave. The other ploy is to try and catch someone who is just walking back to their car in order to plead for that space. lf these tricks fail, the only thing left is to park far away on ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In other words, make it convenient for car poolers. In this same vein, buses or vans could be run to outlying areas which have large numbers of Northridge students as residents. Charge a fee which would be less than the student is now paying in parking fees and gas. If the buses or vans were advertised in the paper to increase student interest and if they were run at convenient times, I am sure many students would take advantage of the opportunity. A somewhat different tack would be to encourage bicycle riding and/or walking. Many students living close to campus still drive when they could be bicycling. Making the roads safer for bikers is of major concern and unsafe conditions are the reasons given by many who do not ride. Providing bicycle lanes on all streets around the campus would be extremely beneficial. This would decrease contact with the faster moving traffic. Adding more bicycle stands on campus which are secure would also encourage bike riding. Perhaps courses on bike riding safety could be conducted on campus. Again, advertising of the new bike lanes and bike facilities would encourage more people to ride. Also advertising the health benefits of riding or walking should increase the number of students who will take advantage of this inexpensive means of transportation. There are several reasons why this change is both ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The air is cool with early morning fog. Doris leads and I follow. Her pace is faster than usual. No problem. I ride my bike to ride my bike. I have a low–keyed Friday. I've scheduled a pitch meeting at eleven with a new writer. And further, I highlight in red the screenplays ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... We leave the building, and stroll towards the parking lot. I reveal that the purpose of the bike ride is to raise money for leukemia research and to honor of an eleven–year old girl, Elizabeth, who died from the disease. "Text me the name of the charity, and I'll have my accountant write a check." "That's fantastic, thanks." When I arrive home, I eat a sparse dinner of fish, veggies, and brown rice. The food doesn't satisfy. I head to the kitchen to eat plain yogurt with berries. But devour an entire pint of French vanilla ice cream with two half–frozen brownies instead. After, I stay up late and binge watch the remaining episodes of "Game of Thrones." And fall asleep close to midnight. On Saturday morning, there's no time for coffee. I over slept. Doris drives us to meet Gordon and Zak at a street near Sepulveda. I sit in silence and run my tongue across my teeth. Yuck. I'd forgotten to brush them or my hair. And worse yet, I look disheveled wearing Khaki shorts, a worn tee shirt and a gray wool sweater with a hood. Not the bike apparel I bought in the REI store earlier this week. I glance over at Doris, who's wearing the perfect cycling outfit. Her appearance is flawless. When we meet up with Zak and Gordon, both are eager to get started. It's apparent that I just rolled out of bed. We stretch for ten minutes or more. Next we get on our bikes. Zak leads our ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

URBAN PLANNING BIKE PATHS Introduction to the work The history of cycling infrastructure begins shortly after the so–called "bike boom" of the 1880's when the beginning short stretches of dedicated bicycle paths were constructed, through to the rise of the automobile from the middle of the 20th century onwards towards the simultaneous decline of cycling as a means of transport, till cycling's comeback starting from the 1970s onwards. By the end of the 19th century, cycling had grown from a simple hobby of a few to an established form of transport for many. Cyclists at that time campaigned to improve the existing bike paths, which were often poorly textured roads and tracks. The first bicycle paths were built around ... Methodology to be implemented in the work A general survey of the studied area is implemented in order to help detect the obstacles affecting the continuity of a connected bike infrastructure, and to define solutions to these problems. Maps sourced from Google maps were used along with direct visits to the studied area. Paths were studied and documented using photos and notes to observe the circulation in the area and what each path offers in terms of obstacles and possibilities for integrating bike paths into the city. Factors examined included bike lanes, topography, distance from downtown, demographics, and population density. After studying the problems faced, I looked into other projects with problems similar in category and scale in order to find the best possible solutions, and researched all possible variations of bike paths and technologies in this field while adjusting them to the case study area. Benefits of integrating bike paths in to the city The bike paths will attract more people to cycling which has many health benefits, aside from being a sport such as aerobic fitness, heart, circulatory, joints, and weight control, it results in a lower number of cars driving on the street lowering the amount of noise and air pollution. Cycling will result in areas where people will gather such as shops or resting areas which benefit the social aspect of the city leading ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Evaluate a peer's use of the brakes when stopping the bike. Instruct the students to perform the ABC Bike Check before each ride. Group students into groups of 2–3. Direct students to area on course where they will work. Bikes and lanes should already be set up. Circulate and perform the pre–assessment. Note: For students who are unable to ride they will practice using the balance bikes and will ride the course while pushing and balancing with legs. As they get more comfortable and able to balance have them push with legs and see how long they can balance before feet go back to ground. They should practice getting on and off of bike to walk around cone. • 126. Bicycles Are Used All Around The World Bicycles are utilized all around the world. Some are designed purely for speed on the road. Others are designed for sturdiness off of the road. People ride bicycles for various reasons, such as: competition, fitness, and recreation. Further, when considering bicycles that are used for traveling, specifically commuting to and from work, the two key features of the bicycle that should be considered are comfort and speed. However, once an appropriate bicycle is designed and developed, the next step in the marketing process is testing the product. The market testing strategy that is being tested for this bicycle prototype involves test marketing the bike and marketing program in one or two urban areas with large commuting populations before beginning manufacturing, promoting, and distributing the bike on a national scale. The goal of the market testing strategy is to garner results that provide information which will help the marketing team make a more successful national launch. This strategy is common, and will have multitudinous benefits as well as inevitable disadvantages that may or may not outweigh the advantages. The marketing team's sanguine expectations of test marketing the bicycle are determining whether or not the current design adequately satisfies the needs of the average commuter. In determining if the market testing strategy will assist the success of the product launch, it is more important to figure out if the testing will provide adequate information for the ... • 134. Persuasive Essay The benefits of bicycling for one's fitness and health are obvious. Any type of normal exercise regimen, followed weekly, is good for an individual's long–term health. Exercise is beneficial for the human body. Sticking to a dedicated fitness regimen helps an individual improve his/her cardiovascular system and lowers blood pressure within the body. Along with following a diet plan and eating healthy, a routine weekly exercise regimen helps keep off excess weight. I have been an avid bicyclist for over 30 years. Instead of receiving keys to a car on my 16th birthday, my parents went out and bought me a 10–speed bicycle. I know that 10 speeds for a bicycle nowadays would be considered out–dated. But, please remember this was back in the summer of 1973. Even though I ran track in high school, and would become all–state in short– distant sprints by the time I graduated, I found a love in bicycling. A few years later while attending college, I would have about five weeks off in between the time that school got out upon the completion of semester finals, and when I would start my job as a summer camp counselor. During that five week period, instead of sitting on the couch daily and watching television for hours at a time, I simply got out my bike and rode around the outskirts of the town that I lived in at the time. My normal route was about 25–30 miles. It involved climbing several hills, but after each workout I felt invigorated. As I mentioned earlier, I also ran track in high ... Parent Advice Column : Bicycle Helmet Safety Parent Advice Column: Bicycle Helmet Safety Ariel Warren New York University College of Nursing October 28, 2015 Abstract Children and adolescents have the highest rate of bicycle injuries of all age groups; less than half of children who ride bikes wear a helmet regularly. In this advice column, Procheska's theoretical framework is paired with Erikson's developmental model to apply the risk of helmet misuse in a pediatric patient case study. A retrospective cohort study was analyzed to determine evidence of pediatric head injuries sustained from lack of helmet use. The results of the study show that pediatric patients who do not wear helmets are indeed at increased risk of serious head injuries. Pediatric Nurse Practitioners working with children and adolescents of all ages who ride bicycles can use the findings and evidence from this advice column to provide helmet safety education and information to children and parents in their practice. Introduction According to national data, over 200 children die each year from bicycle crashes, and over 250,000 children sustain bicycle–related injuries (Sullins, Yaghoubian, Nguyen, Kaji, & Lee, 2014; CDC Head, 2015). Helmets reduce skull injuries in children by up to 87%, but less than 50% of children report wearing a helmet most or all of the time (Mattei et al., 2012; CDC Head, 2015). • 142. Benefits Of The Bicycle INTRODUCTION: In my research I will discuss with you about some interesting invention is the Bicycle. The bicycle is the means of transportation more prevalent around the world. In the past the bike was used as primary form of daily transportation. After many years the people start to use this invention for children to play and have a fun. But nowadays, the people developed and used the bike as a sport device. So, I chose this invention (the bicycle) because I love it so much and I always feel happy when I ride it, and because the bicycle is a safety transport and easier to use than other transportation. • 146. What Is The Paradoxical Relationship Between The Health... I plan to study the paradoxical relationship between the health benefits of safe cycling infrastructure and the claim that it promotes gentrification and drives the communities it is intended to serve further into the peripheries of cycling friendly cities. In November 2016, Austin voters passed Proposition I, which granted $137 million dollars to improve sidewalks and urban pathways1. Among opponents of improving cycling infrastructure in East Austin, many pointed out that bicycle lanes would increase the growing pressures of gentrification on the lower income members of the community. This fear accompanied the claim that minorities and lower income residents of East Austin do not use bicycles for transportation, and that the lanes would ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... I am personally interested in this topic because I believe that access to environments that promote healthy lifestyles should not be restricted to the wealthy, and that city governments should concentrate on increasing bike–ability and walkability in lower income neighborhoods. Several studies have shown replacing car travel with cycling and walking decreases obesity and increases overall health5, and one study in Kansas even showed a significant decrease in employee healthcare costs following investments in local cycling programs3. However, before interest groups launch advocacy and infrastructure expansion, it is important that they understand the effects of that expansion, and integrate consideration for future housing affordability into their plans. Population (Inclusion/ Exclusion Criteria) Through my capstone research, I hope to shed light on the three–way relationship between bicycle lanes, community health, and gentrification. To do this, I plan to find primary research that helps me answer the following questions. 1. How does the addition of bicycle lanes affect community economics and growth? 2. Has research shown a correlation between the addition of bicycle lanes and gentrification? 3. How does bicycle lane availability differ in low income and high income ... • 150. Persuasive Essay On Pedestrians Walk Your Wheels: The Danger of Bicycles in Pedestrian Sidewalks I glance down at my phone for a moment and I realize that my 15–minute margin of travel time to race across campus to my class is dwindling; I look up only to find an individual on a bicycle hurdling toward me, clearly, incapable of stopping in time, I scramble out of the way in an attempt to save myself from becoming roadkill. This is a common occurrence for student pedestrians on their way to class given the increasing number of bicyclists and skateboarders that refrain from following university transportation laws, however, instead of criminalizing the act of using these modes of transportation on pedestrian sidewalks the university should make it safer and more efficient for these individuals to share the roads with cars by installing bicycle lanes. This issue is important to all campus residents, since the incorrect use of transportation could jeopardize their safety and should be carefully considered in order to prevent accidents. This proposal argument will aim at persuading university officials, specifically those in charge of the university transportation services, to reconsider their handling of bicycle and other non–motorized transportation rules and safety on campus. There are many rules that bicyclists and other alternative transportation users must follow, for example, "bicycles [are] not [to] be ridden on sidewalks or any pedestrian paths in the limited bike zone [central campus]", yet not ...
