Essay on Fools Rush In and My Big Fat Greek Wedding
Fools Rush In and My Big Fat Greek Wedding
Every movie that is written has a certain attitude to it. Some of these are intended to be laughed at
and others are meant to be heartfelt. Though each movie is written with its own voice, so to speak,
many have similar plots or themes. The two movies Fools Rush In and My Big Fat Greek Wedding
are two of these movies that have similarities in the themes, but not necessarily in the plots. Both of
these romantic comedies have strong religious backgrounds on the woman's side of the family and
differences in culture. The main theme between these two movies is the quest for happiness and all
the troubles that must be overcome to achieve it.
In the movie Fools Rush In Salma Hayek and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Toula has been raised in a Greek home and still has not married, though all of her siblings have. In
the Greek culture a woman is to marry a Greek man, have Greek babies and feed everyone in the
family for the rest of their lives. Since Toula has not married she is living with her parents and
working in their family restaurant. While working as a hostess she encounters Ian and falls head
over heels in love with him. The problem is that he is not Greek; he is actually what her parents
would consider a rebel. She hides him from her family for as long as possible, but the truth is
revealed. Her family makes it known that without conversion he will not be accepted into their
Greek home. He follows through and in the end they are joyful in the outcome of their lives
together. They also have Greek children and Toula is able to be the ideal Greek woman.
These two movies both deal with similar issues. In both movies the women are struggling between
what their hearts are telling them and what they have been raised to know their entire lives. The
struggle to overcome the fact that their intended may not be accepted is one that is handled with
many mixed emotions. Toula is unable to face her family and admit she is seeing Ian, while Isabel
just eloped and caused family disturbances. The religions of the women differ greatly from the men,
much like the cultures. Toula had been raised entirely Greek and she knew no other way to be while
Ian, on the other hand, was

Radio Talk Show Host, Rush Limbaugh
Advocacy Journalism is when a journalist takes a non–objective stance while speaking about a
specific topic. It is generally used to argue a specific viewpoint in politics or social matters. This
form of journalism has been around for many years. Traces of advocacy journalism date back all the
way to the 17th century with John Milton's Areopagitica (Applegate 11–12). Radio talk show host,
Rush Limbaugh, would be a modern example of an advocacy journalist because of his commonly
subjective viewpoints that he expresses to his audience. With so many media outlets for people to
get their word out on, advocacy journalism has grown to be more prominent in the past few decades.

He focuses on the problems his hometown of Flint, Michigan faces after their plant shuts down,
leaving the majority of the town without jobs. Following the release of his first film, he set free
another documentary in 2002 called, Bowling for Columbine. In this film he examines the gun
culture in the United States. He focuses greatly on the shooting held in Littleton, Colorado at
Columbine High School and why the two killers performed the terrible act that they did. Both films
were slightly different than most documentaries you often watch because he does not remain
objective throughout the film. Instead, Moore uses his films to speak passionately about a particular
subject. They both were very influential because Moore used tactics that solidified his opinions and
arguments. Moore presents information that is impactful and startling. He puts forward many
examples that make his viewers elicit the response he wants and in the end makes them agree with
his opinions. Ultimately, the impacts of Moore's films were satisfactory. His use of powerful
argumentative techniques sways his audience to his side of opinions. In regards to Roger & Me,
Moore was successful in persuading GM to hold back a few years before closing another plant
because of how Moore portrayed the individuals who were laid off. The poverty and lack of
prosperity of the town affected by the closure of many plants was key in persuading individuals that

Why do Ultra-Conservatives Believe What They Believe? Essay
Why is it that most ultra–conservatives (typically Southern states) cling to the idea that our second
amendment is being violated when it is in fact NOT being violated? Why do most conservatives
honestly believe that Barack Obama or Hillary Clinton are the Anti–Christ? Why do most ultra–
conservatives believe that "Trickle Down Economics" works? When in fact even during recessions
the rich people are still richer than ever? Why do Rush Limbaugh and Sean Hannity truly believe
that they are in fact experts on global warming or climate change? It's snowing outside in GA and

The population they target are conservatives that are also the same next door neighbors that have a
lot of difficulty paying their bills, but believe that wanting affordable health care is truly un–
American. And God forbid that Michelle Obama go on television and try to promote healthy eating
in children. Most of the GOP believes this to be Communist/Socialist propaganda.
In this day and age, the level of intolerance and fear mongering in "ultra–conservative America" is
at an all time high and it reeks not only of idiocy and ignorance, but also of hate. Leaders of a pack
of conservative "loonies" who commence rapid fire of unsubstantiated fears and conspiracies on
television and radio are people like Rush Limbaugh, Sean Hannity, Glenn Beck, and Michelle
Malkin. Among the faithful listeners/viewers are ultra–conservative politicians who bask in their
own opportunities to rile up the conservative population while at the same time, they are promoting
their own personal agenda of only being recognized as a "Savior" of conservative–America. You
notice that most of the ignorant population always has a knee jerk reaction to the "gospel" that these
conservative media personalities put out?

Carly Fiorina's Political Election
Carly Fiorina joined the ranks of outsider candidates to run in the 2016 election, but unlike Donald
Trump, did not brand herself as an overly populist candidate. Her ad "Take Our Country Back"
might have populist appeals, but focuses on the liberal conventions of setting a political agenda and
convincing voters that she can lead, despite being an outsider with no political experience. The spot
begins by flashing images of her opponents and their tenures in government, with voiceovers
pointing out how they have done nothing to advance the Republican platform during all these years.
This populist shaming sets up Fiorina's liberal appeal and her agenda she calls a blueprint for
America:

Presenting herself as an outsider implies that anyone, regardless of political background, has the
ability to lead the United States, and her blueprint is a promise to the American people what that

Using voiceovers and critical depictions of the Republican establishments' tenures in office, Fiorina
is able to identify and define the problem with American politics. The dark music and colors
resemble something of horror, as each politicians' long histories in government have contributed to
the nation's decline. The tone of the spot changes as the text "Had enough?" appear on the screen.
The music rises, signaling to viewers that Fiorina's blueprint is the solution to the problems.
This problem–solution format to the advertisement gives the spot a superhero appeal by identifying
the political establishment as the problem plaguing America, and offering Carly Fiorina as an
outsider solution to these problems. Following a visual of an architectural blueprint, Fiorina's
solutions appear on the screen images of her speaking in the background suggest she is confident

Rush Week Essay
During rush week, I was required to talk to potential new members for my fraternity. I had many
conversations with freshman and a couple of sophomores is one big group. The PNMs and I
discussed a wide range of topics. One particular guy I was talking to was actually a friend of mine
who was the only sophomore at the rush events. He and I talked about how great our freshman year
was and how much we hated a certain person.
In our main conversation, we discussed about how he wanted to be a part of a bigger idea and
fortunately our mutual friend referred him to my fraternity. My friend told me how he doesn't want

of emotion, there was a variety of emotions actually displayed in our conversations from both sides.
We both have displayed disgust, happiness, neutral, excitement, and frustration. When we talked
about the girl we hated he displayed all of the emotions listed above except happiness. I did the
same depending on his stories. Our show of happiness and excitement were displayed when we both
discovered that we both hate a particular girl and that he was rushing my Fraternity. Disgust and
excitement was displayed when he and I exchanged stories of our freshman year.

trying to get my attention. I quickly put on my jeans and shirt and rush to the window in my living

Let me in you chump!" he exclaimed. I took my time to walk to the window, because it was funny to
me to see him so angry. I opened the window to let Steve in. Surprisingly, he brought Kevin along
with him, eating a sandwich with ketchup leaking onto my carpet. Those two are my closest friends
that I got, apart from one other. Kevin is a tall, muscular brute man, and seems to look like the one
that gets all the girls. Than there's Steve. He is less athletic than Kevin and I, but he's still strong
nonetheless, which is surprising considering I play video games nonstop. Than there is Bob. Bob
is... something. His main profession is computer technology. When anything that is remotely related
to technology breaks down, or malfunction, we give Bob a call. Yet I feel sorry for him. He's not the

The Canadian Progressive Rock Band Rush
Books, movies, paintings, music, and other types of art are connected in various ways, but one
connection seems to stand out. All art mediums are constructed in a way that disallows a median to
be reached regarding one's opinion from another. If a group of people favors one thing, another
group most likely exists that has the opposite, or conflicting opinion. 2112, read Twenty–one twelve,
is a 7–part conceptual album by the Canadian progressive rock band Rush, illustrates this conflict in
its main plot. Regardless of its vivid storytelling and impactful instrumentals that glues everything
together, it is evident that each listener will break apart in terms of their personal opinions.
2112, much like in Anthem by Ayn Rand, the dystopic idea of equality and how everyone should
cherish their unique identities that they possess. The main character, named Anonymous, retaliates
against the idea by not conforming to what is expected by the "Priests of the Temples of Syrinx", but
the factor driving him ultimately was the will to venture outward and appreciate something that
seemingly no one else sees. The conversation between Anonymous, and the priest during "IV.
Presentation", separates light from dark. Anonymous, after discovering a guitar that the "Elder race
of man" left, speaks out to share his opinions. "I can 't believe you 're saying / These things just can
't be true / Our world could use this beauty / Just think what we might do" (Rush, IV. Presentation).

The Unpersuadables Chapter 7 Summary
In Chapter 7 of The Unpersuadables: Adventures with the Enemies of Science, Will Storr addressed
his time spent exploring homeopathy and skepticism. First, he wrote about his interview with
Gemma, an activist for homeopathy whose interview with BBC Radio Five Live went viral online
after someone edited a rubber duck saying 'Quack' over her every time she spoke. Since the editor of
Gemma's video was presumably a Skeptic, Storr then transitioned into writing about his time spent
exploring Skeptic culture. He wrote under the assumption that Skepticism is founded on the
principle of which "it's incredibly important that people not get carried away with wishful thinking,
with stuff they would like to be true" (Storr 103). However, Storr went on ... Show more content on

Ullman and Lewis are a perfect example of this. When both men were prompted to discuss
Professor Aijing Shang's study on homeopathy, they interpreted it in two completely different ways.
Ullman claimed that the study was unfairly skewed against homeopathy whereas Lewis claimed that
the study was credible and that Shang was justified in the steps he took while conducting the
experiment. When Storr asked Lewis if Ullman was at least partially justified in his interpretation,
Lewis responded, "Dana is always wrong. So, no, I wouldn't go that far" (Storr 115). A study meant
to produce one whole truth managed to benefit the biases of two opposing arguments due to the
effects of confirmation bias – in this, the whole truth was lost. This raises the question: if the whole
truth is lost, did it exist to begin with? Is anything true without our making it so? Storr,
unfortunately, does not attempt to answer this question in Chapter 7. He simply acknowledges its
presence. In doing so, however, he revitalized the overarching theme of confirmation bias and truth
in the book, and I believe that was done with intention. Each chapter thus far has detailed Storr's
journey into increasingly complex levels of this theme without ever reaching a true conclusion, but
this chapter set a different dynamic: it insinuated that, perhaps, there is no true conclusion to be
found.

Traffic In Downtown Austin, Texas: A Case Study
Traffic in downtown Austin, Texas is becoming a sever issue and is continuing to become slower
and more congested every day. Austin ranks 4th on a list of U.S. cities with the least efficient
roadways, and with its remarkable growth rate, the issue can only get worse. After reading
numerous articles based on opinions and statements from local city planners and engineers, the best
way to see an improvement in the traffic issue is to increase the amount of public transportation in
the Austin area. The increase of public transportation would provide fast travel time and would help
reduce the amount of money, commuters and locals use on gas by a substantial amount per year.
Though many may argue the that we have enough public transportation already, reducing the
number of personal vehicles on the road would decrease the amount of bumper to bumper traffic
experienced on a daily basis, as well as increase the options for those commuting to the city every
day. there are many possible solutions, such as widening the highways or even building them
underground, these solutions however are not the most economically correct and productive way to
relieve traffic downtown. One possible solution to Austin's traffic problem is to expand the busy
roadways where most traffic congestion is found. Widening these roads would help alleviate traffic
issues near the downtown area of Austin as well as other busy and

The Happiest Day Of My Life
Is it ok if I'm 5 years old and that I was very ignorant (I'm much more educated now though...)? This
is memorable because it's the happiest day of my life I had just gotten home from pre–School. I
gave my parents a kiss and told them how my day went. Soon after that I told them I was hungry, so
they made some platanos fritos with some well–done cow beef. After I ate my food, I went to my
room and fell asleep for about 2 hours.
It was now 3:59 PM, and unfortunately, I woke up to the sound of screaming, but it was not that
blood curdling scream you hear just before someone gets murdered in a movie, it was more of a
cheerful kind of scream. So, I ran down stairs to see what all the commotion was about. I saw my
two older brothers who were at the time 16 and 15 years old and my mom and dad. My father was
holding some sort of cake in his hands. He told me my mother and he had gone to Sam's club to buy
a few things.
My brothers told me to go help get the rest of the food out of the van and that's exactly what I didn't
do. You could say I had ADHD at the time and maybe I still do. I say this because I asked a million
questions at the same time and started jumping up and down about 200 to 300 times. Apparently, the
only question they understood out of all the 1million questions was "What type of cake is that!?"
This is what they told me "It's cheese cake, and for goodness sake stop jumping up and down like a
rabbit that's on a sugar rush and help your brothers!" So on I went

genuinely wonder, How CAN somebody think that? Why DO 13 million Americans listen to his

Flying has never been an issue with me in the past. On the contrary, I enjoy flying for various
reasons. During the summer, I was flying constantly. I was flying from New York to Portland every
weekend, if not every other weekend because of work. I was always told to leave early to the airport
incase its busy, or there's traffic on the way. There was times where I was pushing my luck on how
close I could get without arriving late. As I learned the hard way, it is vital to be on time to flights to
prevent missing them and having to reschedule plans. Packing my stuff and getting to leave my
house and head to the airport was stressful enough. The lingering thought of forgetting something
runs through my head at a constant pace. On the way to the airport, there was an accident on the
freeway which caused a traffic jam. From there on, rush hour was slowly accumulating and
becoming an issue. Navigating through the streets of Portland is challenging, especially once it is
rush hour. Luckily, my mother knew the streets better than I did and she was able to drop me off on
time. Once I had arrived to the airport and checked in, I thought to myself that it will never happen
again and that I will plan accordingly. Unfortunately, it's easier to promise yourself something, than
it is to actually follow through with your promise. Once I landed in New York my worries were

How To Build A Traffic Jam Essay
When we start talking about traffic, the first thing that comes to our mind is road rage; however, it
would surprise you how people stay cool in this type of chaos. Gridlocks are the nightmare for any
driver. I have been driving for eight years, and I have had the opportunity to see different types of
behaviors in a traffic jam. It is surprisingly amazing how traffic jams can bring out the worst and the
best of you. Throughout my driving life, I had been stuck in heavy traffic that lasted more than four
hours, and light traffic that only lasted less than forty–five minutes. However, sitting in traffic gave
me the opportunity to categorize driver's behavior such as the ass of the jungle, the monk drivers,
the snoopies and the hot head ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
I totally have seen some drivers acting like a monk in traffic. The monk drivers tend not to feel
desperate, and usually they distract themselves with other activities. For example, my cousin used to
drive from Woodbridge to Alexandria when she studied at NOVA. Sometimes she used to get stuck
in rush hour traffic, and she used to read her lecture in the traffic. To be honest, I totally see that as a
smart way to spend time in traffic. Another example that shows the behavior of a monk driver is
catching up with old friends or relatives. I got stuck in a terrible traffic, and I decided to call my
grandmother. We spent two hours talking which helped me to get distracted. In hindsight it does
sound dangerous to talk on the phone while driving, but this time any car wasn't moving a bit. Also,
Monk drivers prepare a playlist before getting out from home. Listening to your favorite music can
give you a sense of tranquility. In fact, monk drivers practice a lot of equanimity, which is a mental
calmness. Overall, drivers in general should take the traffic jam with a sense of equanimity, so they
can find moments of tranquility in a chaotic traffic jam.
Moreover, we have the snoopy drivers. Being sneaky is a horrible habit that some people tend to
develop in life. As we know sneakiness is really different from curiosity. Being curious is the act to
get harmless information that can actually satisfy our knowledge. However, being sneaky is to be

The Way Things Ought To Be Summary
This review is on the book, The Way Things Ought to Be by Rush Limbaugh. The Way Things
Ought to Be was published in 1992 by Pocket Books. Rush uses humor and popular culture to
discuss his opinions of the way the government ought to work. He was one of the nation's most
popular radio stars at the time that the book was published. His radio show went national in the year
of 1988, after 28 years of being a local radio talk show host in Sacramento. Rush then decided that
he would take his conservative, yet sometimes provocative, beliefs and publish his first book – The

I picked a few of what I think are the most important arguments to discuss: abortion, feminism,
religion, environmentalism. These topics are very controversial in today's society. The first topic is
abortion. Rush takes the conservative standpoint of pro–life, except in cases of the mother's life
being at risk. He is opposed to abortion because he believes that life begins at conception. He
strongly disagrees with other people's opinions on this topic. According to Rush, supporting
abortion is also supporting crime, illegitimacy, the dissolution of the family, and callousness of the
living. He also says that feminists are the only people to support abortion, because they "want the
government out of their womb". Rush even went as low as to compare abortion with rape. He used
the argument that many women rightfully use in support of abortion – "it's my body and I have the
right to choose what I do with it" – in order to justify rape. He said, "What if a man claimed the
right to rape, using the same principle found in the theory that it is his body and he has the right to
choose?" (Chap. 6, pg. 52, Par. 1, Limbaugh). There is most definitely a difference in rape and

How Does Systemic Violence Affect The Tramp
At some point in someone's life the struggle with day to day activities can seem never ending.
Modern Times is a film that shows how the ever changing life we live can take a toll on how we
choose to live. The tramp, Charlie Chaplin, goes through many hard times in the course of this short
film. He worked in a labor intensive factory, got caught in a machine, spent time in jail, failed at
several jobs, and finally found his calling of being an entertainer. The woman he was going to spend
his life with was homeless and caught stealing bread, but the tramp took the blame. The duo took

Systemic violence is "directed at members of a group simply because they are members of that
group" (Speight 128). In other words, these people are targeted because the oppressor feels that the
group they belong to needs oppressed. A scene that really captures this condition is when the tramp
is trying to return a flag that has fallen off a truck to the driver. The tramp was waving it in the air to
signal the driver that he lost it (Chaplin). The police officers, however, thought that the tramp was
participating in the strike that was going on behind him. The officers arrested him without even
questioning what his motives were which shows that they arrested him simply because he was
"part" of the strike. Another example of systemic violence in the film is when the tramp told the
police he had stolen the bread to cover for the gamin. The police just assumed that he was right even
though the other townspeople were telling the police otherwise. After the police found the gamin,
they arrested both the tramp and the gamin because they could (Chaplin). This type of violence is
not right because the tramp was innocent and the police had no reason to take him to

The Master Speed by Robert Frost Essay
'The Master Speed' by Robert Frost
Throughout the poem The Master Speed, Frost addresses the idea that marriage is a sacred bond that
must be treasured all through our lives. The main reason for the apparent matrimony theme was due
to the engagement of Frost's daughter. Because of this great influence over his life, Frost reiterated
the advice to his daughter to stay at 'the master speed'; in order to fully enjoy the rest of her life as

instead take in life, nice and slow so that it may be savored.
Frost first presents this idea by metaphorically discussing the spectacular abilities his daughter

Frost uses these examples to show that by staying at the 'master speed';, stopping, his daughter has
the ability to enjoy her existence and the commitment she is about to make.
In the second quatrain, Frost tells the reader his daughter was given her 'special abilities'; so that 'in
the rush of everything to waste, that [she] may have the power of standing still.'; By this, Frost
reiterates his theme by stating that if you travel through life to fast you will lose all the fun and
enjoyment it has to offer. Respectively, Frost suggests that everyone especially his daughter should
stop at the 'master speed'; to take in the beauty that resides in our everyday lives. Frost also suggests
that two people joined by the sacred bond of marriage 'cannot be parted nor be swept away from one
another once [they] have agreed that life is only life forevermore together.'; By this, Frost implies
that two people who have bonded and both traveling at the 'master speed'; are unable to be separated
due to the strength of their connection.
Throughout the poem, Frost reiterates the life long importance of the 'master speed';. Frost hints to
the reader that the 'master speed'; is no speed at all but in fact, stopping during our busy lives. The
poet suggests that one must reach the 'master

Measurement of Problems
It has been observed that during peak hours, each train is over filled by 3–4 times its seating
capacity. And during peak hours on roads, there are frequent long traffic slowdowns or halts. These
busy times are measured as follows: for local trains the percent full per train and for roads the
minimum speed of traffic. This measurement system can be mapped to measure the effect of solving
transportation problem on the overall quality of life of Mumbaikars. By maximizing the suggested
measurement specifications, a train can be filled up to 1.4–1.6 times its seating capacity and on
roads, there should not be a complete traffic halt (apart from exceptional circumstances) and traffic
movement should maintain a minimum of 25–35 km/h. A solution "fails" if it does not meet these
specifications a minimum of 95 percent of the time. For calculating impact on quality of life in
Mumbai, it is assumed that transportation problems contribute 15 percent to the overall reduction. If
the solution system works within specifications, it improves a person's quality of life by 15 percent.
If the solution fails to

acceptable then the quality of life will be affected proportionately. A higher penalty, however, for

Too Much Thankfulness
I've been hearing a lot about this thankfulness thing. I can't get away from it. It started with
Thanksgiving. Before digging in to a big Thanksgiving feast at my daughter's house, we all took
turns saying something for which we were thankful. My grandkids loved the idea so much, that they
have continued the practice of naming something they are thankful for every night before dinner.
They look forward to it.
Then one day last week, while driving home during rush hour traffic I heard a story on the radio
about a monk named David Steindl–Rast who believes that gratitude is the key to happiness. He was
quoted as saying, "We all know people who have lots of misfortunes that we ourselves would not
want to have, and they are deeply happy, they radiate happiness," he says. Why are they like this?
"Because they are grateful. It is not happiness that makes us grateful, but gratefulness that makes us
happy."
I had just finished reading a book set in World War I, in which one of the characters was a soldier
who served as an ambulance driver. His job was to drive into the middle of the battlefield, pick up
wounded soldiers, and take them to the army field hospital. In the midst of all the horror, pain, and
death of war, this man tasked himself with finding beauty in the otherwise bleak and dismal
landscape of war. When he found something beautiful, he wrote it down in a notebook he carried.
He had noted a flower struggling to poke through the trampled earth, a soldier's

A Brief Note On The Pollution Control Programme
1.1.1 Extra fuel consumption
Due to traffic jam, extra fuel consumption is a big problem for a developing country like India. The
government is buying this extra amount of fuel with hard cash. This is considered a national loss.
1.1.2 Vehicle operating cost
Vehicle operating cost is directly proportionate to the traffic jam. A vehicle operator applies more
breaks and accelerates again and again. So, the lifetime of vehicle parts and fuel consumption will
be more in road jams. Traffic jam actually increases VOC. Figure 8: Mapping of congestion cost

Residents following laws with the intention of development of town can reduce traffic jam in
Samalkha town up to great extent. In order to provide training to drivers of motor vehicles, four
Institutes of Driving Training and Traffic Research (IDTRs) are being established in the districts of
the State such as Rohtak, Bahadurgarh, Bhiwani, Kaithal with a total budget of about 100 Crore
Rupees, but few people's approaching to these institutes in state. Table 2 shows charges for training
in these institutes is quite low but still not many people coming to these institutions.

PREL 440: Case Analysis for 2012 Rush Limbaugh vs. Sandra Fluke
I. Introductory Statement
Rush Limbaugh word choices are the problem. On a live radio show with over 12 million listeners,
Limbaugh has openly called third year Georgetown law student, Sandra Fluke multiple derogatory
words, including "slut" and "prostitute." This has been spanned out over three days, where he has
transitioned the situation into a public debate. Public Relations is needed to maintain Limbaugh
positive political platform for the future.

Rush Limbaugh, personally, is considered a conservative political commentator. He currently lives
in Palm Beach, Florida where he broadcasts The Rush Limbaugh Show. Limbaugh frequently
criticizes, both in his books and show, what he believes to be liberal policies and politicians, as well

Road Traffic Congestion in Singapore Essay
Straddling Bus (SB)
Current situation
Road traffic congestion is a major problem in Singapore and it results in delays in the transport
system such as buses not reaching their destinations on their scheduled time. Because of that, it also
results in commuters not getting to their destinations on time even though they already take the
shortest route to their destinations. Although the governmental organisations are putting in effort to
deal with transport capacity, the majority of the citizens are demanding for more efficient
performance on travel time.
Otherwise, road users may face additional traffic–jam conditions that affect their value of time.
Furthermore, public transport users may tend to pay additional transport fees to avoid the ... Show

Khaled Hosseini's The Long-Distance Runner
So many people have tried to explain how life should be viewed, yet in my mind no one has gotten
in quite right. To me there are only two ways to articulate how we live our own personal lives.
These two choices are life as a run, and life as a race; depending on which you choose it can
drastically change the way you perceive life as a whole. Each person, as an individual, has their own
choice on how they view their personal life; however, they should know the differences between the
two. How most people have been raised in today's time, or raised as a millennial, have been told to
live their life as a run. Now a run does not have to be a fast pace, it is your own pace. We are told

Fighting for Our Lives Essay
"Fighting for Our Lives" offers great insight into the current state of public dialogue. Deborah
Tannen describes how our public interactions have increasingly become "warlike", in the way we
discuss ideas, the way we cover the news, and the way we settle disputes. She observes that an
adversarial approach has become the standard as much in public dialogue as it has in "just about
anything we need to accomplish". Although she concedes that "conflict and opposition are as
necessary as cooperation and agreement", she believes that the balance has been tipped in recent
years. An "argument culture" has pervaded American culture, and the consequences are real.
This issue impacts my life in many different ways. First, it makes me pay ... Show more content on

Washington may think that saying anything about the other side, no matter how false, is just part of
the game. But it is precisely such politics that has stopped either party from helping the American
people. Worse yet, it is sowing further division among our citizens and further distrust in our
government."
It is clear that "right–fighting" can have especially serious consequences in the public sector. At
best, it makes it difficult to respect our leadership; at worst, it can debilitate our government.
The "argument culture" is also pervasive in news and talk shows. Think Glenn Beck, Rush
Limbaugh, or even Jerry Springer. Rush Limbaugh has been so successful in criticizing and
attacking, well, any person, policy or point of view that is not "right", that he's been called "the de
facto leader of the Republican Party". While the driving force behind Limbaugh (and other
"personalities" like him) is ostensibly based on differences in principle and ideology, I am inclined
to suspect that it has more to do with power, fame, personal pride, and even money.
So, why are Americans so "hell–bent" to be right? American society is inherently competitive. We
are socialized to believe in polarity. Our moral system tells us that there is always RIGHT–and–
WRONG. The stories we are told from the time we are children, and the books and movies we
consume as adults

Downtown Yonge Business Improvement Area (BIA)
Transportation is the method that a traveler uses to move from one location to another. Congested
urban environments makes transportation a challenge. Since they generally consist of high density
structures, activities and people. Due to the congested nature of urban environments, people who
live and travel in these areas generally have various methods of transportation which may include;
walking, driving a personal vehicle, riding a bike, as well as public transportation, such as trains.
The Downtown Yonge Business Improvement Area (BIA), is an urban environment that too has

Currently, The City of Toronto has implemented several infrastructures and services to create a more
sustainable method of transportation for individuals in urban environments, such as the Downtown
Yonge Business Improvement Area. Some of which are done by discouraging the use of personal
vehicles by limiting the numbers of parking spaces available, as well as implementing traffic signal
synchronization and ramp metering. Many of these services have improved the congestion in
Toronto significantly, however, due to the increasing population, the past improvements are not
enough. The higher population in Toronto makes the land that is available more expensive and as a
result, more people tend to have to move to new towns or suburban areas. Therefore, cities need to
improve transportation services that are already available or they must create new and efficient
transportation services to allow for better commuting (Farahani et al., 2013). Many people who
commute to Toronto tend to rely on their personal automobile. Studies have shown that in the past
two decades, travel by automobiles is the main method of transportation used in the Global Toronto
Area (Abulibdeh, 2014). This is due to variety of reasons, some of which includes the comfort,
speed and convenience one receives by driving a vehicle. As mentioned previously, the increase in

Traffic In Toronto Essay
Have you ever had any trouble with traffic? Most people would say "Yes". Many people, who live in
Toronto, may have dissatisfaction with traffic. According to "The Smart Growth Panel of Ontario",
every motorist in the city spends their commuting time on the road by up to 30 percent during peak
traffic hours ("Toronto", 2015). Travel should be convenient and people could drive swift and
accuracy. However, the city of Toronto has too much construction, and there are so many illegally
parked cars everywhere. To solve these problems, the Toronto government should order illegally
parked cars to be towed than before, and the construction should be faster and more intensive. Much
construction is one of the problems of heavy traffic. The city of Toronto and Toronto Transit
Commission planned various construction projects throughout downtown this spring, summer and
fall. The plans have 12 kinds of construction projects only in downtown (Downtown construction,
n.d). These projects are only government works, private companies does not include in these
projects. Due to these construction projects, there will be shut downs in their construction sections

Decreasing the Wait Time for Cafeteria Food at Howard...
In my proposal plan I recommend that the average wait time at each food station in the café be
decreased, especially during high rush hour time for example during the lunch and dinner rushes.
We can help reduce the time by having servers make up pre portioned plates that way students can
grab and go instead of wait in a line for upwards of thirty minutes for cold food. We can also have
different food options added that serve different options because as of now the food lines operate on
a schedule with the same food options every week. Another recommendation would to be expanded

other concerns for student health for example food poisoning, which I reluctantly got from eating

the amount of workers during rush hour times to decrease the wait time. Also increase food options

Descriptive Essay On The New York City
I close my eyes and everything seems so calm that it is as if time itself has stopped altogether. A
wave of peacefulness rushes over me. New York City, I still cannot believe it. I begin to hear a soft
hum in my ears that quickly increases in volume. I open my eyes and I am suddenly brought back to
reality as the train rushes by, its horn blowing loud and strong. The train slows to a stop and the

the platform push through the crowd, praying that our massive group of dancers will all make it onto
the train. Due to the morning rush hour there is not a seat in sight and there is barely any room to

the flashes of graffiti on the dark walls as we charge forward. The train stops and starts three times.

nerves begin to kick in. The train slows to a stop and once again we push through the morning foot
traffic. We follow the signs towards the West 8th Street exit, struggling to stay together. I think to
myself, "whatever happens, don't lose sight of the chaperone." As we approach the stairwell the air
begins to feel cooler. We reach the top of the stairs and the entire atmosphere changes. Whereas the
people in the subway were frantic and rude, the people that filled the sidewalks are calm

An Analysis of Common Sense Essay
As the year 1776 began in the American colonies, tension with King George III's England was at
perhaps an all–time high. Americans were frustrated with the actions of their rulers overseas. Taxes
and trade restrictions had been placed on them, and British and mercenary soldiers occupied their
towns and cities. There had even been fighting at Lexington, Concord, and Bunker Hill. As America
grew, England's hold on it tightened, and a few voices began speaking of independence. The loudest
and most convincing of these belonged to Thomas Paine, born in England and living in
Philadelphia. His pamphlet, Common Sense, expressed the argument for American independence in
a way no one had before and had a great influence on the Declaration of ... Show more content on

It claims all monarchs are despots, cut off from their people and craving for absolute power. "Male
and female are the distinctions of nature," Paine wrote, "good and bad the distinctions of heaven;
but how a race of men came into the world so exalted above the rest . . . is worth enquiring into"
(Paine 9). Government is a necessary evil, a "badge of lost innocence," that tends to get in the way
of civilized society. Modern civilizations should organize themselves into local, self–governing
societies with only representational government, suggested Paine, not an all–powerful monarch. "Of
more worth is one honest man to society, and in the sight of God, than all the crowned ruffians that
ever lived" (Paine 17). Paine went on to speak in more conventional terms about the specific nature
of the conflict. He had anticipated that readers would be startled by his conclusions, and defended
against possible objections. Uncertainty in the British Empire, some caused by disturbances in
America, was bad for commerce. England would continue to drag Americans into European wars
that were not their affair, said Paine, and protect them only when beneficial to themselves.
Americans would not require their protection; they already had the means to defend their land.
Distance and poor communication across the Atlantic made the centers of government remote from
the colonists. Common Sense stressed the need for and the power of unity among the American

In a survey of Houstonians, over 82% of those surveyed says that they would rather travel on a four
lane street compared to a two lane street because they feel that it is faster (Vu). With more lanes on
Old Foltin Road and Essie Road, drivers will have more opportunity to switch lanes if the lane that
they are currently on is slow or an accident has occurred on the lane. This will reduce the time spent
in traffic. By reducing the time spent in traffic, one is able to help reduce the congestion by being
one less car on the streets. Additionally, on a multiple lane street, there is typically a fast lane
("When"). The fast lane, usually the farthest left lane, is designed for drivers who tend to drive
faster than others around them. The fast lane enables traffic to flow smoother which in turn will
deduce the amount of congestion. "The left lane is saved for those currently passing. It is a very
simple, yet effective rule that helps drivers stay safe and minimizes traffic congestion" ("When").
With the reduction of traffic congestion due to the fast lanes, drivers are able to have more time on
their hands to spend with their families. By using more lanes, Old Foltin Road and Essie Road will

Essay On Fools Rush In And My Big Fat Greek Wedding

  • 1. Essay on Fools Rush In and My Big Fat Greek Wedding Fools Rush In and My Big Fat Greek Wedding Every movie that is written has a certain attitude to it. Some of these are intended to be laughed at and others are meant to be heartfelt. Though each movie is written with its own voice, so to speak, many have similar plots or themes. The two movies Fools Rush In and My Big Fat Greek Wedding are two of these movies that have similarities in the themes, but not necessarily in the plots. Both of these romantic comedies have strong religious backgrounds on the woman's side of the family and differences in culture. The main theme between these two movies is the quest for happiness and all the troubles that must be overcome to achieve it. In the movie Fools Rush In Salma Hayek and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Toula has been raised in a Greek home and still has not married, though all of her siblings have. In the Greek culture a woman is to marry a Greek man, have Greek babies and feed everyone in the family for the rest of their lives. Since Toula has not married she is living with her parents and working in their family restaurant. While working as a hostess she encounters Ian and falls head over heels in love with him. The problem is that he is not Greek; he is actually what her parents would consider a rebel. She hides him from her family for as long as possible, but the truth is revealed. Her family makes it known that without conversion he will not be accepted into their Greek home. He follows through and in the end they are joyful in the outcome of their lives together. They also have Greek children and Toula is able to be the ideal Greek woman. These two movies both deal with similar issues. In both movies the women are struggling between what their hearts are telling them and what they have been raised to know their entire lives. The struggle to overcome the fact that their intended may not be accepted is one that is handled with many mixed emotions. Toula is unable to face her family and admit she is seeing Ian, while Isabel just eloped and caused family disturbances. The religions of the women differ greatly from the men, much like the cultures. Toula had been raised entirely Greek and she knew no other way to be while Ian, on the other hand, was ... • 2. Radio Talk Show Host, Rush Limbaugh Advocacy Journalism is when a journalist takes a non–objective stance while speaking about a specific topic. It is generally used to argue a specific viewpoint in politics or social matters. This form of journalism has been around for many years. Traces of advocacy journalism date back all the way to the 17th century with John Milton's Areopagitica (Applegate 11–12). Radio talk show host, Rush Limbaugh, would be a modern example of an advocacy journalist because of his commonly subjective viewpoints that he expresses to his audience. With so many media outlets for people to get their word out on, advocacy journalism has grown to be more prominent in the past few decades. Often, you come across someone speaking about his or her opinions on ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... He focuses on the problems his hometown of Flint, Michigan faces after their plant shuts down, leaving the majority of the town without jobs. Following the release of his first film, he set free another documentary in 2002 called, Bowling for Columbine. In this film he examines the gun culture in the United States. He focuses greatly on the shooting held in Littleton, Colorado at Columbine High School and why the two killers performed the terrible act that they did. Both films were slightly different than most documentaries you often watch because he does not remain objective throughout the film. Instead, Moore uses his films to speak passionately about a particular subject. They both were very influential because Moore used tactics that solidified his opinions and arguments. Moore presents information that is impactful and startling. He puts forward many examples that make his viewers elicit the response he wants and in the end makes them agree with his opinions. Ultimately, the impacts of Moore's films were satisfactory. His use of powerful argumentative techniques sways his audience to his side of opinions. In regards to Roger & Me, Moore was successful in persuading GM to hold back a few years before closing another plant because of how Moore portrayed the individuals who were laid off. The poverty and lack of prosperity of the town affected by the closure of many plants was key in persuading individuals that there was an actual ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Why do Ultra-Conservatives Believe What They Believe? Essay Why is it that most ultra–conservatives (typically Southern states) cling to the idea that our second amendment is being violated when it is in fact NOT being violated? Why do most conservatives honestly believe that Barack Obama or Hillary Clinton are the Anti–Christ? Why do most ultra– conservatives believe that "Trickle Down Economics" works? When in fact even during recessions the rich people are still richer than ever? Why do Rush Limbaugh and Sean Hannity truly believe that they are in fact experts on global warming or climate change? It's snowing outside in GA and TN! Therefore, global warming must not exist! Yes, that's the most intelligent and forensic analysis I have ever heard in my life. Give me a f*cking break. What ... The population they target are conservatives that are also the same next door neighbors that have a lot of difficulty paying their bills, but believe that wanting affordable health care is truly un– American. And God forbid that Michelle Obama go on television and try to promote healthy eating in children. Most of the GOP believes this to be Communist/Socialist propaganda. In this day and age, the level of intolerance and fear mongering in "ultra–conservative America" is at an all time high and it reeks not only of idiocy and ignorance, but also of hate. Leaders of a pack of conservative "loonies" who commence rapid fire of unsubstantiated fears and conspiracies on television and radio are people like Rush Limbaugh, Sean Hannity, Glenn Beck, and Michelle Malkin. Among the faithful listeners/viewers are ultra–conservative politicians who bask in their own opportunities to rile up the conservative population while at the same time, they are promoting their own personal agenda of only being recognized as a "Savior" of conservative–America. You notice that most of the ignorant population always has a knee jerk reaction to the "gospel" that these conservative media personalities put out? • 4. Carly Fiorina's Political Election Carly Fiorina joined the ranks of outsider candidates to run in the 2016 election, but unlike Donald Trump, did not brand herself as an overly populist candidate. Her ad "Take Our Country Back" might have populist appeals, but focuses on the liberal conventions of setting a political agenda and convincing voters that she can lead, despite being an outsider with no political experience. The spot begins by flashing images of her opponents and their tenures in government, with voiceovers pointing out how they have done nothing to advance the Republican platform during all these years. This populist shaming sets up Fiorina's liberal appeal and her agenda she calls a blueprint for America: Female Announcer: ...that a Republican failed to take ... Presenting herself as an outsider implies that anyone, regardless of political background, has the ability to lead the United States, and her blueprint is a promise to the American people what that leadership will look like. Using voiceovers and critical depictions of the Republican establishments' tenures in office, Fiorina is able to identify and define the problem with American politics. The dark music and colors resemble something of horror, as each politicians' long histories in government have contributed to the nation's decline. The tone of the spot changes as the text "Had enough?" appear on the screen. The music rises, signaling to viewers that Fiorina's blueprint is the solution to the problems. This problem–solution format to the advertisement gives the spot a superhero appeal by identifying the political establishment as the problem plaguing America, and offering Carly Fiorina as an outsider solution to these problems. Following a visual of an architectural blueprint, Fiorina's solutions appear on the screen images of her speaking in the background suggest she is confident that these plans will succeed. I quickly put on my jeans and shirt and rush to the window in my living room. I come to the realization that it was actually Steve that was knocking on my window. "Hey! Let me in you chump!" he exclaimed. I took my time to walk to the window, because it was funny to me to see him so angry. I opened the window to let Steve in. Surprisingly, he brought Kevin along with him, eating a sandwich with ketchup leaking onto my carpet. Those two are my closest friends that I got, apart from one other. Kevin is a tall, muscular brute man, and seems to look like the one that gets all the girls. Than there's Steve. He is less athletic than Kevin and I, but he's still strong nonetheless, which is surprising considering I play video games nonstop. Than there is Bob. Bob is... something. His main profession is computer technology. When anything that is remotely related to technology breaks down, or malfunction, we give Bob a call. Yet I feel sorry for him. He's not the most fit person, and he gets picked on by Kevin all the time, and he can't defend himself. Kevin thinks it's funny, but Bob thinks it is pure harassment. ... • 7. The Canadian Progressive Rock Band Rush Books, movies, paintings, music, and other types of art are connected in various ways, but one connection seems to stand out. All art mediums are constructed in a way that disallows a median to be reached regarding one's opinion from another. If a group of people favors one thing, another group most likely exists that has the opposite, or conflicting opinion. 2112, read Twenty–one twelve, is a 7–part conceptual album by the Canadian progressive rock band Rush, illustrates this conflict in its main plot. Regardless of its vivid storytelling and impactful instrumentals that glues everything together, it is evident that each listener will break apart in terms of their personal opinions. 2112, much like in Anthem by Ayn Rand, the dystopic idea of equality and how everyone should cherish their unique identities that they possess. The main character, named Anonymous, retaliates against the idea by not conforming to what is expected by the "Priests of the Temples of Syrinx", but the factor driving him ultimately was the will to venture outward and appreciate something that seemingly no one else sees. The conversation between Anonymous, and the priest during "IV. Presentation", separates light from dark. Anonymous, after discovering a guitar that the "Elder race of man" left, speaks out to share his opinions. "I can 't believe you 're saying / These things just can 't be true / Our world could use this beauty / Just think what we might do" (Rush, IV. Presentation). Anonymous ... • 8. The Unpersuadables Chapter 7 Summary In Chapter 7 of The Unpersuadables: Adventures with the Enemies of Science, Will Storr addressed his time spent exploring homeopathy and skepticism. First, he wrote about his interview with Gemma, an activist for homeopathy whose interview with BBC Radio Five Live went viral online after someone edited a rubber duck saying 'Quack' over her every time she spoke. Since the editor of Gemma's video was presumably a Skeptic, Storr then transitioned into writing about his time spent exploring Skeptic culture. He wrote under the assumption that Skepticism is founded on the principle of which "it's incredibly important that people not get carried away with wishful thinking, with stuff they would like to be true" (Storr 103). However, Storr went on ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Ullman and Lewis are a perfect example of this. When both men were prompted to discuss Professor Aijing Shang's study on homeopathy, they interpreted it in two completely different ways. Ullman claimed that the study was unfairly skewed against homeopathy whereas Lewis claimed that the study was credible and that Shang was justified in the steps he took while conducting the experiment. When Storr asked Lewis if Ullman was at least partially justified in his interpretation, Lewis responded, "Dana is always wrong. So, no, I wouldn't go that far" (Storr 115). A study meant to produce one whole truth managed to benefit the biases of two opposing arguments due to the effects of confirmation bias – in this, the whole truth was lost. This raises the question: if the whole truth is lost, did it exist to begin with? Is anything true without our making it so? Storr, unfortunately, does not attempt to answer this question in Chapter 7. He simply acknowledges its presence. In doing so, however, he revitalized the overarching theme of confirmation bias and truth in the book, and I believe that was done with intention. Each chapter thus far has detailed Storr's journey into increasingly complex levels of this theme without ever reaching a true conclusion, but this chapter set a different dynamic: it insinuated that, perhaps, there is no true conclusion to be found. ... • 9. Traffic In Downtown Austin, Texas: A Case Study Traffic in downtown Austin, Texas is becoming a sever issue and is continuing to become slower and more congested every day. Austin ranks 4th on a list of U.S. cities with the least efficient roadways, and with its remarkable growth rate, the issue can only get worse. After reading numerous articles based on opinions and statements from local city planners and engineers, the best way to see an improvement in the traffic issue is to increase the amount of public transportation in the Austin area. The increase of public transportation would provide fast travel time and would help reduce the amount of money, commuters and locals use on gas by a substantial amount per year. Though many may argue the that we have enough public transportation already, reducing the number of personal vehicles on the road would decrease the amount of bumper to bumper traffic experienced on a daily basis, as well as increase the options for those commuting to the city every day. there are many possible solutions, such as widening the highways or even building them underground, these solutions however are not the most economically correct and productive way to relieve traffic downtown. One possible solution to Austin's traffic problem is to expand the busy roadways where most traffic congestion is found. Widening these roads would help alleviate traffic issues near the downtown area of Austin as well as other busy and ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 11. The Happiest Day Of My Life Is it ok if I'm 5 years old and that I was very ignorant (I'm much more educated now though...)? This is memorable because it's the happiest day of my life I had just gotten home from pre–School. I gave my parents a kiss and told them how my day went. Soon after that I told them I was hungry, so they made some platanos fritos with some well–done cow beef. After I ate my food, I went to my room and fell asleep for about 2 hours. It was now 3:59 PM, and unfortunately, I woke up to the sound of screaming, but it was not that blood curdling scream you hear just before someone gets murdered in a movie, it was more of a cheerful kind of scream. So, I ran down stairs to see what all the commotion was about. I saw my two older brothers who were at the time 16 and 15 years old and my mom and dad. My father was holding some sort of cake in his hands. He told me my mother and he had gone to Sam's club to buy a few things. My brothers told me to go help get the rest of the food out of the van and that's exactly what I didn't do. You could say I had ADHD at the time and maybe I still do. I say this because I asked a million questions at the same time and started jumping up and down about 200 to 300 times. Apparently, the only question they understood out of all the 1million questions was "What type of cake is that!?" This is what they told me "It's cheese cake, and for goodness sake stop jumping up and down like a rabbit that's on a sugar rush and help your brothers!" So on I went ... As Rush says that liberal feminazis want ugly girls to control the world, my dad says out loud, "How can somebody think that?" and reaches to switch the station. I motion for him to stop and genuinely wonder, How CAN somebody think that? Why DO 13 million Americans listen to his show? • 16. Persuasive Essay Flying has never been an issue with me in the past. On the contrary, I enjoy flying for various reasons. During the summer, I was flying constantly. I was flying from New York to Portland every weekend, if not every other weekend because of work. I was always told to leave early to the airport incase its busy, or there's traffic on the way. There was times where I was pushing my luck on how close I could get without arriving late. As I learned the hard way, it is vital to be on time to flights to prevent missing them and having to reschedule plans. Packing my stuff and getting to leave my house and head to the airport was stressful enough. The lingering thought of forgetting something runs through my head at a constant pace. On the way to the airport, there was an accident on the freeway which caused a traffic jam. From there on, rush hour was slowly accumulating and becoming an issue. Navigating through the streets of Portland is challenging, especially once it is rush hour. Luckily, my mother knew the streets better than I did and she was able to drop me off on time. Once I had arrived to the airport and checked in, I thought to myself that it will never happen again and that I will plan accordingly. Unfortunately, it's easier to promise yourself something, than it is to actually follow through with your promise. Once I landed in New York my worries were gone for a week. • 17. How To Build A Traffic Jam Essay When we start talking about traffic, the first thing that comes to our mind is road rage; however, it would surprise you how people stay cool in this type of chaos. Gridlocks are the nightmare for any driver. I have been driving for eight years, and I have had the opportunity to see different types of behaviors in a traffic jam. It is surprisingly amazing how traffic jams can bring out the worst and the best of you. Throughout my driving life, I had been stuck in heavy traffic that lasted more than four hours, and light traffic that only lasted less than forty–five minutes. However, sitting in traffic gave me the opportunity to categorize driver's behavior such as the ass of the jungle, the monk drivers, the snoopies and the hot head ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... I totally have seen some drivers acting like a monk in traffic. The monk drivers tend not to feel desperate, and usually they distract themselves with other activities. For example, my cousin used to drive from Woodbridge to Alexandria when she studied at NOVA. Sometimes she used to get stuck in rush hour traffic, and she used to read her lecture in the traffic. To be honest, I totally see that as a smart way to spend time in traffic. Another example that shows the behavior of a monk driver is catching up with old friends or relatives. I got stuck in a terrible traffic, and I decided to call my grandmother. We spent two hours talking which helped me to get distracted. In hindsight it does sound dangerous to talk on the phone while driving, but this time any car wasn't moving a bit. Also, Monk drivers prepare a playlist before getting out from home. Listening to your favorite music can give you a sense of tranquility. In fact, monk drivers practice a lot of equanimity, which is a mental calmness. Overall, drivers in general should take the traffic jam with a sense of equanimity, so they can find moments of tranquility in a chaotic traffic jam. Moreover, we have the snoopy drivers. • 18. The Way Things Ought To Be Summary This review is on the book, The Way Things Ought to Be by Rush Limbaugh. The Way Things Ought to Be was published in 1992 by Pocket Books. Rush uses humor and popular culture to discuss his opinions of the way the government ought to work. He was one of the nation's most popular radio stars at the time that the book was published. His radio show went national in the year of 1988, after 28 years of being a local radio talk show host in Sacramento. Rush then decided that he would take his conservative, yet sometimes provocative, beliefs and publish his first book – The Way Things Ought to Be. I picked a few of what I think are the most important arguments to discuss: abortion, feminism, religion, environmentalism. These topics are very controversial in today's society. The first topic is abortion. Rush takes the conservative standpoint of pro–life, except in cases of the mother's life being at risk. He is opposed to abortion because he believes that life begins at conception. He strongly disagrees with other people's opinions on this topic. According to Rush, supporting abortion is also supporting crime, illegitimacy, the dissolution of the family, and callousness of the living. He also says that feminists are the only people to support abortion, because they "want the government out of their womb". Rush even went as low as to compare abortion with rape. He used the argument that many women rightfully use in support of abortion – "it's my body and I have the right to choose what I do with it" – in order to justify rape. He said, "What if a man claimed the right to rape, using the same principle found in the theory that it is his body and he has the right to choose?" (Chap. 6, pg. 52, Par. 1, Limbaugh). Modern Times is a film that shows how the ever changing life we live can take a toll on how we choose to live. The tramp, Charlie Chaplin, goes through many hard times in the course of this short film. He worked in a labor intensive factory, got caught in a machine, spent time in jail, failed at several jobs, and finally found his calling of being an entertainer. The woman he was going to spend his life with was homeless and caught stealing bread, but the tramp took the blame. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Systemic violence is "directed at members of a group simply because they are members of that group" (Speight 128). In other words, these people are targeted because the oppressor feels that the group they belong to needs oppressed. A scene that really captures this condition is when the tramp is trying to return a flag that has fallen off a truck to the driver. The tramp was waving it in the air to signal the driver that he lost it (Chaplin). The police officers, however, thought that the tramp was participating in the strike that was going on behind him. The officers arrested him without even questioning what his motives were which shows that they arrested him simply because he was "part" of the strike. Another example of systemic violence in the film is when the tramp told the police he had stolen the bread to cover for the gamin. The police just assumed that he was right even though the other townspeople were telling the police otherwise. After the police found the gamin, they arrested both the tramp and the gamin because they could (Chaplin). • 20. The Master Speed by Robert Frost Essay 'The Master Speed' by Robert Frost Throughout the poem The Master Speed, Frost addresses the idea that marriage is a sacred bond that must be treasured all through our lives. The main reason for the apparent matrimony theme was due to the engagement of Frost's daughter. Because of this great influence over his life, Frost reiterated the advice to his daughter to stay at 'the master speed'; in order to fully enjoy the rest of her life as well as her future commitment. By this Frost suggests that one should not rush through life but instead take in life, nice and slow so that it may be savored. Respectively, Frost suggests that everyone especially his daughter should stop at the 'master speed'; to take in the beauty that resides in our everyday lives. Frost also suggests that two people joined by the sacred bond of marriage 'cannot be parted nor be swept away from one another once [they] have agreed that life is only life forevermore together.'; By this, Frost implies that two people who have bonded and both traveling at the 'master speed'; are unable to be separated due to the strength of their connection. Before digging in to a big Thanksgiving feast at my daughter's house, we all took turns saying something for which we were thankful. My grandkids loved the idea so much, that they have continued the practice of naming something they are thankful for every night before dinner. They look forward to it. Then one day last week, while driving home during rush hour traffic I heard a story on the radio about a monk named David Steindl–Rast who believes that gratitude is the key to happiness. He was quoted as saying, "We all know people who have lots of misfortunes that we ourselves would not want to have, and they are deeply happy, they radiate happiness," he says. Why are they like this? "Because they are grateful. It is not happiness that makes us grateful, but gratefulness that makes us happy." I had just finished reading a book set in World War I, in which one of the characters was a soldier who served as an ambulance driver. Although she concedes that "conflict and opposition are as necessary as cooperation and agreement", she believes that the balance has been tipped in recent years. It is clear that "right–fighting" can have especially serious consequences in the public sector. At best, it makes it difficult to respect our leadership; at worst, it can debilitate our government. The "argument culture" is also pervasive in news and talk shows. Think Glenn Beck, Rush Limbaugh, or even Jerry Springer. So, why are Americans so "hell–bent" to be right? American society is inherently competitive. We are socialized to believe in polarity. This can cause other concerns for student health for example food poisoning, which I reluctantly got from eating food from the Howard university cafeteria. Some of the alternatives that I propose are to increase the amount of workers during rush hour times to decrease the wait time. Also increase food options in what is Howard's food court "Punch Out," Determining what changes to the current system that will be most effective above will have to be analyzed in a most cost effective way. To asses the current situation at the annex and Blackburn cafeteria, I would like to use a simulation or decision–making model to see if my proposal would be a particle plan. The simulations will what we do not know as opposed to the information we already know. The simulations will allow us to test what effect a change will have on the current system of reaching out in the community around Howard University while also fixing the problem internally. The model relies on the strength of the opinions of the student body and faculty members on the practicality of the situation. It will replicate the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 39. Descriptive Essay On The New York City I close my eyes and everything seems so calm that it is as if time itself has stopped altogether. A wave of peacefulness rushes over me. New York City, I still cannot believe it. I begin to hear a soft hum in my ears that quickly increases in volume. I open my eyes and I am suddenly brought back to reality as the train rushes by, its horn blowing loud and strong. The train slows to a stop and the doors open. All at once a massive crowd of people rush off of the subway. Those of us standing on the platform push through the crowd, praying that our massive group of dancers will all make it onto the train. Due to the morning rush hour there is not a seat in sight and there is barely any room to stand. As the train lurches forward we struggle to stay standing. I look out of the window and watch the flashes of graffiti on the dark walls as we charge forward. The train stops and starts three times. Each station just as chaotic as the last. We quickly approach our fourth stop, West 4th Street, the nerves begin to kick in. The train slows to a stop and once again we push through the morning foot traffic. We follow the signs towards the West 8th Street exit, struggling to stay together. I think to myself, "whatever happens, don't lose sight of the chaperone." As we approach the stairwell the air begins to feel cooler. We reach the top of the stairs and the entire atmosphere changes. Whereas the people in the subway were frantic and rude, the people that filled the sidewalks are calm ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 40. An Analysis of Common Sense Essay As the year 1776 began in the American colonies, tension with King George III's England was at perhaps an all–time high. Americans were frustrated with the actions of their rulers overseas. Taxes and trade restrictions had been placed on them, and British and mercenary soldiers occupied their towns and cities. There had even been fighting at Lexington, Concord, and Bunker Hill. As America grew, England's hold on it tightened, and a few voices began speaking of independence. The loudest and most convincing of these belonged to Thomas Paine, born in England and living in Philadelphia. His pamphlet, Common Sense, expressed the argument for American independence in a way no one had before and had a great influence on the Declaration of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... It claims all monarchs are despots, cut off from their people and craving for absolute power. "Male and female are the distinctions of nature," Paine wrote, "good and bad the distinctions of heaven; but how a race of men came into the world so exalted above the rest . . . is worth enquiring into" (Paine 9). Government is a necessary evil, a "badge of lost innocence," that tends to get in the way of civilized society. Modern civilizations should organize themselves into local, self–governing societies with only representational government, suggested Paine, not an all–powerful monarch. "Of more worth is one honest man to society, and in the sight of God, than all the crowned ruffians that ever lived" (Paine 17). Paine went on to speak in more conventional terms about the specific nature of the conflict. He had anticipated that readers would be startled by his conclusions, and defended against possible objections. Uncertainty in the British Empire, some caused by disturbances in America, was bad for commerce. England would continue to drag Americans into European wars that were not their affair, said Paine, and protect them only when beneficial to themselves. Americans would not require their protection; they already had the means to defend their land. Distance and poor communication across the Atlantic made the centers of government remote from the colonists. Common Sense stressed the need for and the power of unity among the American ... • 42. Personal Narrative: Our Lady Of Lavang Sundays have always been my favorite day of the week. I have always dedicated this day to unwinding and spending time with my loved ones before the chaos of the week starts up again, and today was no exception. I planned on attending mass at my local parish, Our Lady of Lavang, before seeing my godfamily before they left for their annual summer vacation. I thought it was going to be a good day; however, all of that changed when I saw the massive traffic jam of cars trying to exit the Our Lady of Lavang's facility. Surrounding the parish are two roads, Old Foltin Road and Essie Road, each of which only contains one lane. Cars exiting Our Lady of Lavang can only drive on one narrow side of the road while cars coming into Our Lady of Lavang for ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In a survey of Houstonians, over 82% of those surveyed says that they would rather travel on a four lane street compared to a two lane street because they feel that it is faster (Vu). With more lanes on Old Foltin Road and Essie Road, drivers will have more opportunity to switch lanes if the lane that they are currently on is slow or an accident has occurred on the lane. This will reduce the time spent in traffic. By reducing the time spent in traffic, one is able to help reduce the congestion by being one less car on the streets. Additionally, on a multiple lane street, there is typically a fast lane ("When"). The fast lane, usually the farthest left lane, is designed for drivers who tend to drive faster than others around them. The fast lane enables traffic to flow smoother which in turn will deduce the amount of congestion. "The left lane is saved for those currently passing. It is a very simple, yet effective rule that helps drivers stay safe and minimizes traffic congestion" ("When"). With the reduction of traffic congestion due to the fast lanes, drivers are able to have more time on their hands to spend with their families. By using more lanes, Old Foltin Road and Essie Road will be able to reduce the disruption of vehicles entering and exiting Our Lady of ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
