The Grammy Awards ceremony in 1991 was not all that different from those which preceded it. A
crowded auditorium littered with the beautiful people of Hollywood and the music industry once
again gathered in Los Angeles to honor the year s most popular recording artists. However, at the
time of this year s awards the country was in the midst of its first significant military action since
the Vietnam conflict. The threat of a full scale ground attack loomed on the horizon and the nation

Bob Dylan s lyrics that evening were dated. But, no doubt to his great dismay, they were no more
less relevant on this evening in 1991 then they were when he wrote them in the midst of then
President Lyndon Johnson s controversial deployment of American troops to Vietnam. The
audience that evening wasn t watching some fly by night hipster playing senseless fluff. They were
caste in the shadow of the most prophetic musical figure of the last fifty years. A man whose inner
fire forged a new musical frontier and shaped an entire generation of American youth.
Background
The man affectionately known as Bob Dylan to millions of fans worldwide was actually born
Robert Zimmerman on May 24, 1941 in Hibbing, Minnesota. Hibbing is a desolate mining town on
the outskirts of Duluth, near the Canadian border. Zimmerman s father was a local business owner,
operating an appliance and furniture store in Hibbing. As a boy, young Robert was introverted and
secretive. As he reached adolescence Robert became a talented storyteller with a tendency to
fabricate stories about his past to such an extent as to make the truth difficult to decipher. With age
came the renouncing of his Jewish faith, just one of many rebellious stands taken in that period.
Those closest to Robert at that time attributed his rejection of Judaism to the boy s dislike for the
small town business community that his father

Discrimination And Discrimination In Society
Since the beginning of time people have discriminated against others. White people will look at
people of different races and think less of them. These people who discriminate think that they are
superior to them or they have more authority. Slavery was abolished in 1835 but that doesn t mean
people of color were treated any better. Every today there is still discrimination. Crooks symbolizes
the groups of people that are still discriminated against and this lack of power helps you understand
that racismstill exists today.
In every kind of job people of color are discriminated against. Maybe they weren t given the
promotion because of their skin color or they are paid less than their white coworkers. The
Washington post wrote an article about discrimination in Hollywood. Even though there are
these huge actors and celebrities in Hollywood they still get paid less than successful white
actors. Minorities make up more than 36 percent of the U.S. population but represented only 10
percent of lead characters in movies... (Hollywood s Race). Along as in regular everyday jobs
there is a pay gap. Compared to whites, African Americans are twice as likely to be unemployed,
and earn nearly 25 percent less when they are employed. (Discrimination) This is quite a very
large unemployment number, not only that but also a large gap in jobs you wouldn t even expect.
Now relating back to the book. Crooks is discriminated against in his job and even though this book

Pew Research Article Summary
Americans receive many messages about support for gay rights ranging from clergy to gay men;
however, some are ambivalent, or undecided on the issue because of the numerous messages that
they are given (Garner 2013: 243). Andrew Garner wanted to test if contact with gays and lesbians
would elevate or decline levels of ambivalence among American s opinions about gay rights (241).
While this research question could be discovered in the abstract, the author never states the research
question clearly. Garner does provide immense detail about previous studies; however, he lacks
clear justification for the study, and the support he provided had to be collectively assumed rather
than explained. Assumingly, he argues that by understanding how gay... Show more content on

To test this hypothesis, he uses Pew Research Center for the People and the Press s 2004
Typology Survey from December 2004 and the late March callback survey, inclusive of 1,090
participants. The author provides a haughty analysis of the survey and how the data is
measured. The callback interviews asked respondents if they have a friend, colleague, or family
member who is gay, while the main survey asked two separate questions concerning how strongly
respondents support same sex marriage and acceptance of homosexuals as a way of life. Contact
is measured as a dichotomous or dummy variable indicating whether or not the respondent knew
someone who is gay, (249). The survey also asks questions about race, party identification, and
religious affiliation (249 250). Garner then describes how the variables are coded, are applied to
the Harvey Multiplicative Heteroskedastic Regression model, and the calculations required to
discuss the variables

The Verdict Ethics Essay
The Verdict is a movie that deals with medical and legal ethics. Frank Gavin is an alcoholic who
hasn t won any of his cases in the past three years. Mickey, his former partner, gives him a
medical malpractice case that is sure to settle for a large amount of money. The case of Deborah
Ann Kay, a mother who was given anesthetic when she had just eaten inhaled her vomit and is
now in a coma. The Donaheys, her sister and brother in law are hoping for a good settlement and
Frank assures them that they have a strong case. While the case is going on he meets Laura, a
woman at a bar who he falls in love with. Frank goes to visit Deborah Ann Kay in the hospital and

He then goes to the hospital to see Deborah Ann Kay and is deeply affected by it. He feels this is
his chance to do something right and wants to provide fair justice for her instead of just taking the
money. He doesn t take the settlement or tell the Donaheys about it which he is supposed to tell
them. He also stole mail from Maureen Rooney to get ahold of Kaitlin Costello Pryce. Frank did
all of this because the end would justify the means. Even though some of the things he did weren t
right he wanted to do the right thing by providing justice for Deborah Ann Kay.
Concannon takes a Utilitarian standpoint and only cares about winning and money he doesn t
care about justice. He wants to win by whatever means necessary. The money he gets by winning
pays for the work they do with the poor, for law to be practiced, for general needs, and the leisure
to do nice things. He also pays Laura to spy on Frank to make his job easier and see what Frank s
tactics are.
Laura Fischer takes a Utilitarian standpoint for most of the movie. She wants to be apart of law
again and is hired by Concannon to spy on Frank. Laura then begins to care about Frank and they
fall in love. She cannot bear what she is doing to Frank anymore and tries to tell him but he is too
busy. By doing this she is trying to do the right thing. In the end she betrays Concannon and doesn t
tell him that Frank has Kaitlin Costello Pryce as a witness. By her not

Pro-Gun Rights Essay
Shall Not Be Infringed
When Governments fear the people, there is liberty. When the people fear the government, there is
tyranny. (Beck 35). This quote is from one of the greatest men in the history of the United States of
America, Thomas Jefferson, the father of the Declaration of Independence, and the third President
of the United States. The validity of his statement is not only historical, but as pertinent today as it
was when spoken anew. It is learned in schools across the nation, although the importance of the
words depends on the teacher, school, and region of the country. During the revolutionary period,
King George learned this same concept the hard way, ...an armed populace is a populace that will
not be pushed around. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Investigating all ten of the amendments to the Bill of Rights, only the second specifically ensures
that this be expected. The only true power that the people of a nation can have over their
government is the ability to remove it if it becomes more powerful than the people. This is a belief
that is continuously defended or confronted around the world and throughout history.
Unfortunately, when the people have an army standing between them and the government, the
means to fight become very important, albeit difficult. The federal government of the United States,
when they attempt to create laws on gun control, does not have the law on their side. Thanks to the
founding fathers of the United States, this right is ensured through time. They understood that any
form of government can become corrupt and eventually the people will need a legal way to ensure
that they can take back their personal liberties if it becomes necessary.
In the period of time before the United States became the young country it is today, in order to
secure and protect established borders, the colonists were in need of the assistance of the standing
army of King George, the British Red Coats. As soon as the colonists decided to revolt excessive
taxation and other mandates being imposed on towns and states,

The Dangers Of Child Beauty Pageants
Child Beauty pageants have been around for about fifty five years already and are becoming more
and more common throughout society. There have been many TV shows such as Toddlers and
Tiaras in which young children are judged based on their beauty, personality, and talent. Although
some people might think that childbeauty pageants are beneficial because they teach discipline,
patience, and improve self confidence, in reality, they give children an unrealistic idea about what a
perfect body is and often lead to an insecure future. These pageants often have high standards that
children have to live up to. Many psychologists have stated that these girls could often develop
emotional problems because their figures might not develop into what

Effects Of Alcohol On The Body s Organs And Brain Activity
Alcohol is a recreational drug which contains ethanol (Drugfreeworld.org, 2016), a depressant
that prolongs the messages from the brain to the body affecting the way one thinks, feels and
behaves (Alcoholthinkagain.com.au, 2014). Excessive alcohol consumption can have many
negative effects on the body s organs and brain activity. Major health problems such as
cardiovascular disease, cirrhosis, depression, gout and pancreatitis can occur as a result of
consuming large quantities of alcohol and have the potential to be fatal (Freeman, 2016). Binge
Drinking is the act of consuming an excessive amount of alcoholic beverages within a short
period of time with intentions to become heavily intoxicated (Dictionary.com,2014). Males in
there 40 s and late 20 s are most likely to exceed the recommended level of alcohol consumption
and young women aged 18 24 are foreseen to excessively drink alcoholic beverages
(Nhmrc.gov.au, 2015). Adolescents aged 13 17 also engage in excessive drinking although
evoked due to observing others such as guardians, siblings and peers as well as the existence of
peer pressure to consume alcohol and appear socially acceptable. Binge Drinking will have short
term effects on the health of an individual leading to memory loss, vomiting and headaches and
long term effects such as anxiety, a variety of cancers and infertility (Knowyourlimits.info, 2013).
In Australia 15 individuals die from these alcohol related diseases and illnesses each day (Santow,
2014).

Eating Disorders
According to The National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) website, eating disorders are
actually serious and often fatal illnesses causing serve disturbances to a person s eating
behaviors. People with eating disorders often have obsessions with food, their body weight, and
their shape. There is, however, a difference between an eating disorder and a diet. It is important
to know the difference. Eating disorders are a daily struggle for 10 million females and 1 million
males in the United States (Eating Disorder Hope). An eating disorder is a compulsion to avoid
eating in order to lose weight while a diet is cutting down eating or healthier eating in order to lose
weight. The three types of an eating disorders are anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, and binge
eating disorder. All three disorders are important and they all deserve immediate treatment. No
matter what eating disorder someone has, it can resort in organ damage and sometimes even death.
The average that someone develops anorexia is 19 years old (NIMH), but that does not mean a
person can only be 19 in order to develop an eating disorder. The NIMH has reported cases of
eating disorders reporting in ages as low as .1 percent of eight to eleven year olds and .2 percent
of twelve to fifteen year olds. Eating disorders are becoming more common for students in high
school and college, since they view it as a coping mechanism to handle their

The Cabinet Of Dr Caligari
The German film, The Cabinet of Dr Caligari, is an expressionistic film directed by Robert
Weine and written by Hans Janowitz and Carl Mayer. The film is seen as a masterpiece of
German Expressionism in the 1920 s. The film industry during this period was emerging and
becoming an accepted form of art in Germany after the First World War. The film
exploded on the
art world not only in Germany but made its way to France. France lifted the ban on German
cinemas due to its popularity. It eventually spread to the United States. This film is seen as one the
great horror stories of all times.

Caligari tells the story of Francis, who, through flashbacks, recounts his terrifying experiences at
a carnival in a small German village, where he first encountered Dr. Caligari, a man with the
power to control people in their sleep. When Francis s friend is mysteriously murdered and his
fiancГ©e is kidnapped, he pursues Dr. Caligari to an insane asylum, determined to unravel the

revolutionary meaning of the story reveals itself unmistakably at the end, with the disclosure of

Personal Choices In Romeo And Juliet
Ovid s PT and Shakespeare s Romeo and Juliet can both be a very hard story to read and
interpret. The characters are constantly following things that pop up in their mind and
coincidentally happening. I believe that in both stories Destiny has the greatest impact on
multiple things but the main controversial topic is personal choices. That s why I believe in
Ovid s PT and Shakespeare s Romeo and Juliet, Destiny had a greater impact on characters. One
example from Romeo and Juliet is when Romeo accidentally get invited to a Capulets party
where coincidentally Juliet is there. If it was the personal choice that thrived Romeo would
have chosen not to go to the party. These are shown in the play when Romeo says Romeo
suggests as much before he goes to the party where he first meets Juliet: I fear, too early for my
minds misgive some consequences yet hanging in the stars. This shows that without destiny
Romeo would have chosen not to go to the party and would have never been given the
opportunity to meet Juliet. Another example of this in Romeo and Juliet is when Juliet finds out
Romeo is of the house of Montague and the nurse says His name is Romeo, and a Montague, THe
only son of your great enemy. This is an example of how destiny had a greater... Show more content

In your answer you should consider the ways in which Donne and Jennings use form, structure and

John Donne s The Anniversary is all about the love the theoretical narrator and his object of love

I have no will to weep or sing...No least desire to pray or curse : These two lines expresses how
the author did not have any hope less and was feeling depressed. Furthermore, Emily Dickinson s

The repetition of the word strangely in the final stanza of Jennings poem could mean one of two
things: either that she finds it strange that they do not love one another in the same way anymore
or on the other hand, it could simply be emphasising that her parents are estranged from one
another. There is a sad and empty atmosphere or mood created through the poem. The sense of
coming death and fading passion creates a chilling mood; this contrasts with Donne s poem in

Similarly, City Night (1929) is a forty eight inch tall painting of geometric and sharp edged urban
architecture towering over the glowing moon. The naturally rounded moon is contrasted to the
manmade straight lines of the city. The pedestrian perspective and ominous scale places the
audience between sharp towers. The environment and people that surrounded Georgia O Keeffe
stimulates her to add it in her work. Specifically, Alfred Stieglitz was obviously a great influence in
Georgia s life; being each others muse and benefactor. The 1926 painting The Shelton with Sunspots

Ansoff s growth matrix. Ansoff s growth matrix is a valid way to find out which business strategy
and growth strategy the business use. The model states which strategy or strategies a company has

В· Market Penetration the company seeks to achieve growth within its existing products in their

В· Market Development the company seeks growth by aiming its existing products towards new

The War On Drugs And Its Impact On The United States
The current policy in use by the United States concerning illegal drugs is both outdated and
unfair. This so called war on drugs is a deeply rooted campaign of prohibition and unfair
sentencing that is very controversial and has been debated for many years. The war on drugs is
designed so that it will never end. This current drugwas has very little impact on the overall supply
of prohibited drugs and its impact on demand seems non existent. United States taxpayers are
spending billions of dollars on this failure of policy. They are spending billions to incarcerate
drug users instead offering drug treatment which could help lower demand. Legalizing illicit
would lower abuse and deaths from use and could have a positive economic impact on the
United States. Certain industries are making massive sums of money by capitalizing on the drug
war. Currently, many prisons are beginning to be run by private corporations. If a company is
running a prison then they need prisoners to stay in business. Around 1 in every 107 Americans
is currently being housed in a prison. The United States has about 5 percent of the world s
population yet 25 percent of its prisoners(ACA, 2008). This is the easiest way to maintain a large
prison population is by maintaining the current drug war. The largest private prison company in the

It should not be legal for pharmaceutical companies to target specific physicians, mainly those
who lack knowledge of the drug that company is trying to sell, and attempt to sell them a drug
without giving the full list of benefits and disadvantages of the drug no matter how large or
small. The FDA should also be able to make RiskMAPs mandatory for all drugs and should be
able to request it at any time. They should be able to step in and take a drug off the market at any
given time if they see fit. Finally, pharmacists should be attentive to all their surroundings while
on the job. One of the most important qualities a pharmacist can have and that employers should
look for is the ability to multitask. If a pharmacist is unable to detect a forged prescription or signs
of an addict it can be detrimental, not only to the person attempting to purchase the drug, but to
society as a whole. Opiate drugs were created to help people in legitimate pain, but due to the three
factors previously stated, they have been used non medicinally and caused the drug addiction and
overdose rates to increase. Although the benefits of these drugs are significant and unprecedented,

Essay on Battle of Saratoga
Battle of Saratoga
During the time of the American Revolution, there were many battles that took place and affected
the Revolution. One battle though, made a huge impact on the American Revolution. The Battle of
Saratoga proved that the disadvantaged and weaker American forces were strong enough to
overpower the British forces. It all started when General John Burgoyne needed to get his forces to
Albany. He and his army headed across the Hudson River, where they would then take a road
south ward to Albany. Burgoyne knew the enemy (American forces) were in the area, but he did
not know of their exact location. Leading to the Battles of Bemis Heights and Freeman s Farm, the

Freeman was a Loyalist who had earlier left for Canada. After about three hours of battle, the
Americans ran out of ammunition, making them have to retreat. The British then claimed victory at
Freeman s Farm.
Freeman s Farm was located on the west side bank of the Hudson River. It was right near Bemis
Heights, making it easy for people to build fortifications in the woods and high outcroppings. It
was located a few miles away from Burgoyne s destination of Albany. It was a perfect location for
an army to fight and keep themselves in somewhat of an alright sanctuary. During the Battle, both
sides used different tactics and strategies. Burgoyne decided to go with a risky strategy of dividing
his army into three columns, two towards Bemis Heights and one to follow the road that paralleled

Firstly, marketers and advertisers know you better than you do. Wiley, the writer who wrote the
book people analytic in the era of big data , once claims in his book People live in an era of big
data . In this era, your private information seems not private anymore. Every word you typed in
and every photo you have uploaded will be known by the company, and although that information
seems disorderly and unsystematic for you it is still important for the company to explore their
market. Consumers tendencies vary from gender to age, therefore, marketers spend millions
developing strategies to identify children s predilections and then capitalize on their vulnerabilities
(Rushkoff 92). The production of an advertisement is constituted by series of exploring processes.
Nowadays, by using the technology the company can easily find everything they want and this is
the power of big data. Within the world of marketing, data is extremely important and play an
incredibly central role. The company spends million dollars to take the massive pool of data and
make it actionable. The data that the company found is basically from the

Rational Emotive Behavioral Therapy
January 1955, Albert Ellis first started to do Rational Emotive Behaviour Therapy (REBT). REBT
was the first of the cognitive behaviour therapies and since then the field of therapy has since

As one of the first cognitive theories, this paper will look at the overview of the approach, which
includes the concepts, principles, and practices. The REBT s therapeutic goals, process and the

Cognitive techniques: Rational analysis; analyses specific episodes to teach the client how to
uncover and dispute irrational beliefs this is usually done in the first session until the client
understands and then this can continue as homework. Double standard dispute; If the client is self
downing about their behaviour, ask if they would let your friend think that about themselves, when
they say no help them understand they are then holding a double standard onto themselves.
Catastrophe scale; this is a useful technique, this is where the therapist asks the client to rate
where their problems are at, you get a piece of paper and draw a line from top to bottom, mark
100% at the top and 0% down the bottom, and put 10% in between at intervals. Devil s advocate
also known as reverse role playing; This is when the therapist gets the client to argue against their

dysfunctional, in which getting the client to realise that their dysfunctional belief is irrational.
Reframing; reframing is re evaluating the bad event into perspective with them being disappointing

Essay on Langston Hughes
Langston Hughes
Langston Hughes was one of the first black men to express the spirit of blues and jazz into words.
An African American Hughes became a well known poet, novelist, journalist, and playwright.
Because his father emigrated to Mexico and his mother was often away, Hughes was brought up in
Lawrence, Kansas, by his grandmother Mary Langston. Her second husband
(Hughes s grandfather) was a fierce abolitionist. She helped Hughes to see the cause of social
justice. As a lonely child Hughes turned to reading and writing, publishing his first poems while in
high school in Cleveland, Ohio. In 1921 he entered Columbia University, but left after an unhappy
year. Even as he worked as a delivery man, a messmate on ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

Hughes bought a house in Harlem, where he spent the rest of his life. Hughes still feared for the
future of urban blacks. His point of view became immense and included another book of poetry,
almost a dozen children s books, several opera libretti, four books translated from French and
Spanish, two collections of stories, another novel, a history of the NAACP and another volume of
autobiography, I Wonder As I Wander (1956). He also continued his work in the theater, pioneering
in the gospel musical play. Blues began in the south and slowly made its way into the great cities of
the North. As the great migration began people took what they knew in south to the north. This
included music. Langston Hughes living in Harlem was caught up in the new rhythm of music and
based many of his poems on it. As a boy he remembers hearing the blues perfomed in Kansas City.
Hughes was fascinated with black music, tried his hand at writing lyrics, and was taken with the
possibilities of performing music and poetry together 4 Besides having both a love of this music
and the common black folk it was created by and for, one of the reasons that Hughes began to draw
on the blues tradition for writing his poetry is that he hoped to capitalize on the blues craze.

Horror Versus Terror in Gothic Literature Essay example
Horror Versus Terror in Gothic Literature
Gothic literature can be described as literature that is used to terrify people by portraying situations
that border between reality and unreality. The purpose of Gothic literature is to terrify people, not
to horrify them. The definition of horror and terror is often misunderstood, many people think they
have the same meaning. Devendra Varma, in the GothicFlame described the difference between
these words as an awful apprehension and sickening realization. A situation that is horrifying is
usually described very distinctly. It usually deals with something that is grotesque and may be so
appalling that is it unrealistic. It gives an exact portrayal of what is being described, usually by ...

The floor was cold. Our toes curled away from it while we listened to the sound. It was like
singing and it wasn t like singing, like the sounds that Negroes make.
The main importance of this passage is the sound. This passage is descriptive and it allows the
reader to produce an image of the scene. The author describes the sound in a way that also leaves
room for different interpretations of it. The author does not come out and say it but he is
definitely indicating that the sound is frightening. It is not a happy sound because it was not
singing but it was not a sad sound because it was not crying. The children toes curl away because
of the cold but it seems also from the sound, otherwise that sentence would not have been
important. Its purpose it to terrify the reader, it gives a suggestion of what the sound was like but
it does not exactly equate it to something or it probably cannot be exactly equated to something
making it even stranger. If it had been a scream it would have been instead horrifying because a
scream is a very distinct sound and is usually associated with something specific. This sound is
somewhat confusing and hard to associate with anything except that it is similar to sounds that
Negroes make. This passage occurs in the middle of the story and it is the first time the sound it
mentioned. The sound is eerie and confusing. The author seems to be trying to give the reader an

Rock Music History
Rock music has been very popular for years. Now a day s rock has blended in with the other
types of popular music like pop, country and rap. However, none of these other types of music
seemed to have as big an impact on people that rock did. Rock n roll, basically controlled the
most of the twentieth century, with an entire era of children, teens and young adults to follow.
But, where did rock come from? What is rock music, what started it? How did parents react? Rock
n roll original started along the Mississippi River Valley (image right, Dennison). The music spread
up and down the river, along the railroads and highways that ran near the river (Allen). It also
traveled through Tennessee, Illinois, Cumberland and the Missouri rivers also known as the
tributaries (Allen). The reason... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
It has to do with the beats, melody, elements and rhythm that make up the music. Those are the
things that separate music from noise. Though, if you listen to early rock like Maybellene by
Chuck Berry and What a Wonderful World by Louis Armstrong it is a little more clearly. When
it comes to rock and jazz in specific; they are influenced by different properties around them.
Even though jazz and rock are inspired by different things; they are still more alike than to any
other type of music. However, they share one distinct difference. In jazz, it uses a shuffle rhythm
and rock does not (Kajanova 13). What that means is that the same rhythmic values in rock are
used in subtle shifts and digressions to enhance the relax feel of the music; along with an essence
and easiness, that s why jazz and rock are different (Kajanova 13). Musical ideas of rock and jazz
came from components that came from European folk and stylized dances that were changed into
country music. From there it was changed into rhythm and blues and jazz, and lastly it was imported
into rock

Free Will Definition
The concept of free will fundamentally breaks down into the interpretation of its two constituent
words. The word free is a direct link to the concept of freedom, which Descartes describes as the
ability to do or not do something . (O Connor) Freedom is not constrained. There can be no limits
placed on it, lest it lose the fundamental nature of its definition. Hume reasoned that the sense of
freedom linked to free will was that of liberty. that liberty is not a power of acting, but a power
of choosing. If I can do what I want, but I can t choose what I want, then perhaps I am not free
(Lacewing 5) I accept this is the more complete ideal of freedom, because it encompasses what free
will ought to be. It also raises interesting questions... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
(174) These tend to be determinisms that govern individual action, on a more personal level.
The second facet of determinism is known as global determinism.(174) These include physical,
theological, and logical determinism. Each of these address the idea of determinism from a
grander scale, where actions and events, surrounding an individual, are directly impacted by
larger principles outside of the control of the agent. For example, physical determinism is when
everything that exists or occurs is simply an arrangement of physical particles that conform to
the laws of physics. Our tossing and failing to swish the paper ball in the waste basket was
caused by a number of other events, which includes our choosing to toss the paper, which was also
determined by other factors leading up to our decision. Theological determinism claims everything
to be pre determined by God, which is another essay all in itself. Logical determinism was
described as whatever happens later could not have been otherwise, and can not contradict the truth
value of whatever sentence or claim we make at the moment. This form of determinism is important

The Great Gatsby thesis statement
Abstract The Great Gatsby is written by the American author F. Scott Fitzgerald. The story takes
place in the roaring twenties . The characters in the novel have dreams and goals and not one
dream ends well. That is why my thesis statement is: The Great Gatsby is really about unattainable
dreams. The dreams I am discussing is GatsbyВґs American dream, Daisy s dream and Nick s
dream. The dreams are based on the love story between Daisy and Gatsby. The final piece in Gatsby
s American dream would be if he got Daisy to wed him. Daisy dreams of Gatsby but chooses
between him and her current husband Tom. Nick wants Gatsby s life to be a happy life and he
cares a lot about him. His dream is for the story to end well. When Daisy does not choose... Show

He wishes that Gatsby s life should contain a happy ever after. There are a lot of dreams in the
book but I want to distinguish these three main dreams and how none of them gets fulfilled.
Gatsby s American dream The first dream that does not get fulfilled is the one of Gatsby. He
starts off as an underprivileged boy and struggles his way to the top. We make his acquaintance
when he is on the top of his life. He is enjoying his big house and his vast wealth. The one thing
he cannot have is his lovely Daisy. Gatsby s story reflects the classical American dream: Anyone
can make anything of himself/herself with just elbow grease, spirit and a whole lot of
confidence. Jay loves Daisy and, sadly, she is the one thing which he cannot procure to his
perfect life . His wealth is shown clearly, for instance when he throws huge parties just to have the
chance of meeting or seeing Daisy. This behavior is not feasible if you do not have that kind of
money which leads us to the conclusion that he is wealthy. The symbol that portrays the American
dream is the green light. The light symbolizes wealth but also Daisy, the latter because there is a
green light at the end of DaisyВґs dock. He reaches out for it just like he reaches out for his dream.
His material world reflects Daisy. Daisy is sometimes a symbol of the American dream. Her voice
is full of money... That was it. I d never understood before. It was full of money that was the

The Impact Of Digital Distraction In The College Classroom
Digital Distraction in the College Classroom
Digital distraction is the addiction that one has to the internet, their phone or any form of digital
technology. This is constantly becoming a bigger problem in this day and age as technology is
advancing and new electronics are constantly being released. These nonstop advancements are
having a big impact on education, especially in the college classroom. Being digitally distracted
can do a lot to a person, considering the fact that the phone and internet have become a huge form
of pleasure for many. Being digitally distracted can make a person lazy and careless and when it is
happening in the college classroom, it gets in the way of learning. Digital distraction is being seen
everywhere nowadays, but one of the places that is has the biggest impact is the college class
because it inhibits learning not just for the user, but for the people around them too. Due to this
rise in technology, millennials have been dubbed digital natives for their comfort with and
addiction to devices like smartphones (Gose). This is something that needs to be fixed because it
causes things such as, the students not listening and missing their professor s instructions, leading
to bad grades and habits, distracts others, and can cause overall laziness. Although technology has
become an on growing problem in the class there are some solutions to solving this issue such as
taking phones away, having a place to put them at the beginning of class, a

Sociology Course At Environmental Problems
The introduction to sociology course this semester turned out to be a very intriguing class. I had
prior knowledge and connection to the subject, but still I thoroughly enjoyed the class and feel
that I learned and developed further knowledge into the subject of sociology. Many of the topics,
discussions, and assignments I really enjoyed doing, and I am glad that the course turned out to
be as great as it was. Due to this, I choose to not write about any activities or topics that I didn t
enjoy learning, because all in all, I really enjoyed everything about this course. I have a connection
to sociologysince a young age, and I very much enjoy studying all the topics we have learned thus
far in this intro class. To write about assignments or topics that I didn t like would be hard for me
because I would have to make up excuses to why I didn t enjoy something discussed. My favorite
topic that we discussed in class was environmental problems. I really enjoy looking at
environmental problems and the implications that arise in society stemming from the
environmental problems in our world. We discussed the types of pollution and the complications
that come from the different types of pollution. I really enjoy learning more about the topic of
environmental change, because I already consider myself to be fairly interested in the topic prior to
its discussion in class. We also talked about the social movements backing environmental change. I
enjoy analyzing social movements because

Jean Michel Basquiat Research Paper
During an era where the American art scene carried out a delimiting appraisal of African American
artist in the mainstream media, Jean Michel Basquiat comes into sight. The late 1870s New York
City street art scene becomes the venue for Basquiat s appearance as SAMO . His work is
synonymous with the market booms of the 1980s, and during this time he grew into one of the
most influential artist of the occurring international movement that was ultimately ruled by
figurative painting. The untrained quality of his painterly work reflects the intense, conceptual
nature of his paintings, although, to some, the roughness of Basquiat s high art style might not
seem sophisticated. In contrast, Basquiat s work offers a look into his concern for portraying a
spiritual experience while at the same time achieving a balance with a poetic aspect and
accompanying visual attributes. Basquiat s aesthetic of his collage style paintings plays on the
contingency of the mainstream s racial constructions. However, much repeated is the standard issue

Everywhere you go and everyone you see is somehow influenced by some type of music. Maybe
it s some kind of childhood learned adaption of what type of music influences them, or maybe
the way a musician preforms make them feel something. One artist in particular most definitely
made an impact on people and caused an uproar in the late sixties. This woman s name was Janis
Joplin. Born on January 19, 1943, Janis Joplin would begin her short, but memorable life in Port
Arthur, Texas. As most do, Janis developed a love for music when she was the youngest she
could remember. Her career really didn t take off until she joined the band, Big Brother and the
Holding Company in 1966. ( Janis Joplin ) Only two years after joining the band, she would get
into an altercation after their album together released, and then leave the band to pursue more. In
her life she would have went to a few places for education. She started out at Lamar State College
but found herself in the end at University of Texas. ( Janis Joplin |... Show more content on

Between her shocking musical choice and unbreakable determination, she would be a model for
all women who wished to excel in the male dominant world of rock and roll. Despite the
intimidations of this standard, Janis feared nothing and took full force. In fact, it may have
pushed her to have more desire to succeed. This was very influential to young women
everywhere. Underneath this carefree, unfearful life, Janis struggled with insecurities and unfair
bullying. She dealt with these situations by partying, just as hard as the men. ( Final 24, Janis
Joplin ) She also was driven to a strong alcohol addiction. This is what is believed to what girls
related to Janis with the most: her deep, dark secrets and issues. Again, her peculiar interest in
preforming rock and roll music made her so special, and certainly memorable. Janis Joplin s
outstanding career impacted music history

  • 2. Bob Dylan Essay Bob Dylan When I was fifteen and I heard Like a Rolling Stone, I heard a guy like I ve never heard before or since. A guy that had the guts to take on the whole world and make me feel like I had em too... Bruce Springsteen The Grammy Awards ceremony in 1991 was not all that different from those which preceded it. A crowded auditorium littered with the beautiful people of Hollywood and the music industry once again gathered in Los Angeles to honor the year s most popular recording artists. However, at the time of this year s awards the country was in the midst of its first significant military action since the Vietnam conflict. The threat of a full scale ground attack loomed on the horizon and the nation seemed ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Bob Dylan s lyrics that evening were dated. But, no doubt to his great dismay, they were no more less relevant on this evening in 1991 then they were when he wrote them in the midst of then President Lyndon Johnson s controversial deployment of American troops to Vietnam. The audience that evening wasn t watching some fly by night hipster playing senseless fluff. They were caste in the shadow of the most prophetic musical figure of the last fifty years. A man whose inner fire forged a new musical frontier and shaped an entire generation of American youth. Background The man affectionately known as Bob Dylan to millions of fans worldwide was actually born Robert Zimmerman on May 24, 1941 in Hibbing, Minnesota. Hibbing is a desolate mining town on the outskirts of Duluth, near the Canadian border. Zimmerman s father was a local business owner, operating an appliance and furniture store in Hibbing. As a boy, young Robert was introverted and secretive. As he reached adolescence Robert became a talented storyteller with a tendency to fabricate stories about his past to such an extent as to make the truth difficult to decipher. With age came the renouncing of his Jewish faith, just one of many rebellious stands taken in that period. Those closest to Robert at that time attributed his rejection of Judaism to the boy s dislike for the small town business community that his father ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Discrimination And Discrimination In Society Since the beginning of time people have discriminated against others. White people will look at people of different races and think less of them. These people who discriminate think that they are superior to them or they have more authority. Slavery was abolished in 1835 but that doesn t mean people of color were treated any better. Every today there is still discrimination. Crooks symbolizes the groups of people that are still discriminated against and this lack of power helps you understand that racismstill exists today. In every kind of job people of color are discriminated against. Maybe they weren t given the promotion because of their skin color or they are paid less than their white coworkers. The Washington post wrote an article about discrimination in Hollywood. Even though there are these huge actors and celebrities in Hollywood they still get paid less than successful white actors. Minorities make up more than 36 percent of the U.S. population but represented only 10 percent of lead characters in movies... (Hollywood s Race). Along as in regular everyday jobs there is a pay gap. Compared to whites, African Americans are twice as likely to be unemployed, and earn nearly 25 percent less when they are employed. (Discrimination) This is quite a very large unemployment number, not only that but also a large gap in jobs you wouldn t even expect. Now relating back to the book. • 4. Pew Research Article Summary Americans receive many messages about support for gay rights ranging from clergy to gay men; however, some are ambivalent, or undecided on the issue because of the numerous messages that they are given (Garner 2013: 243). Andrew Garner wanted to test if contact with gays and lesbians would elevate or decline levels of ambivalence among American s opinions about gay rights (241). While this research question could be discovered in the abstract, the author never states the research question clearly. Garner does provide immense detail about previous studies; however, he lacks clear justification for the study, and the support he provided had to be collectively assumed rather than explained. Assumingly, he argues that by understanding how gay... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... To test this hypothesis, he uses Pew Research Center for the People and the Press s 2004 Typology Survey from December 2004 and the late March callback survey, inclusive of 1,090 participants. The author provides a haughty analysis of the survey and how the data is measured. The callback interviews asked respondents if they have a friend, colleague, or family member who is gay, while the main survey asked two separate questions concerning how strongly respondents support same sex marriage and acceptance of homosexuals as a way of life. Contact is measured as a dichotomous or dummy variable indicating whether or not the respondent knew someone who is gay, (249). The survey also asks questions about race, party identification, and religious affiliation (249 250). Garner then describes how the variables are coded, are applied to the Harvey Multiplicative Heteroskedastic Regression model, and the calculations required to discuss the variables ... The case of Deborah Ann Kay, a mother who was given anesthetic when she had just eaten inhaled her vomit and is now in a coma. The Donaheys, her sister and brother in law are hoping for a good settlement and Frank assures them that they have a strong case. He feels this is his chance to do something right and wants to provide fair justice for her instead of just taking the money. He doesn t take the settlement or tell the Donaheys about it which he is supposed to tell them. He also stole mail from Maureen Rooney to get ahold of Kaitlin Costello Pryce. Frank did all of this because the end would justify the means. Even though some of the things he did weren t right he wanted to do the right thing by providing justice for Deborah Ann Kay. Concannon takes a Utilitarian standpoint and only cares about winning and money he doesn t care about justice. He wants to win by whatever means necessary. The money he gets by winning pays for the work they do with the poor, for law to be practiced, for general needs, and the leisure to do nice things. He also pays Laura to spy on Frank to make his job easier and see what Frank s tactics are. Laura Fischer takes a Utilitarian standpoint for most of the movie. She wants to be apart of law again and is hired by Concannon to spy on Frank. Laura then begins to care about Frank and they fall in love. • 6. Pro-Gun Rights Essay Shall Not Be Infringed When Governments fear the people, there is liberty. When the people fear the government, there is tyranny. (Beck 35). This quote is from one of the greatest men in the history of the United States of America, Thomas Jefferson, the father of the Declaration of Independence, and the third President of the United States. The validity of his statement is not only historical, but as pertinent today as it was when spoken anew. It is learned in schools across the nation, although the importance of the words depends on the teacher, school, and region of the country. During the revolutionary period, King George learned this same concept the hard way, ...an armed populace is a populace that will not be pushed around. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Investigating all ten of the amendments to the Bill of Rights, only the second specifically ensures that this be expected. The only true power that the people of a nation can have over their government is the ability to remove it if it becomes more powerful than the people. This is a belief that is continuously defended or confronted around the world and throughout history. Unfortunately, when the people have an army standing between them and the government, the means to fight become very important, albeit difficult. The federal government of the United States, when they attempt to create laws on gun control, does not have the law on their side. Thanks to the founding fathers of the United States, this right is ensured through time. They understood that any form of government can become corrupt and eventually the people will need a legal way to ensure that they can take back their personal liberties if it becomes necessary. The characters are constantly following things that pop up in their mind and coincidentally happening. I believe that in both stories Destiny has the greatest impact on multiple things but the main controversial topic is personal choices. That s why I believe in Ovid s PT and Shakespeare s Romeo and Juliet, Destiny had a greater impact on characters. One example from Romeo and Juliet is when Romeo accidentally get invited to a Capulets party where coincidentally Juliet is there. If it was the personal choice that thrived Romeo would have chosen not to go to the party. These are shown in the play when Romeo says Romeo suggests as much before he goes to the party where he first meets Juliet: I fear, too early for my minds misgive some consequences yet hanging in the stars. This shows that without destiny Romeo would have chosen not to go to the party and would have never been given the opportunity to meet Juliet. It was right near Bemis Heights, making it easy for people to build fortifications in the woods and high outcroppings. It was located a few miles away from Burgoyne s destination of Albany. It was a perfect location for an army to fight and keep themselves in somewhat of an alright sanctuary. During the Battle, both sides used different tactics and strategies. Burgoyne decided to go with a risky strategy of dividing his army into three columns, two towards Bemis Heights and one to follow the road that paralleled the Hudson. The American forces (led by Horatio Gates and Benedict Arnold) placed expert riflemen (led by Daniel Morgan) in charge of taking out the left flank of the British (led by Simon Frasier). This strategy worked well for the Americans, of course until they ran out of ammunition. The battle (of Freeman s Farm) was officially ended when Burgoyne heard word from Sir Henry Clinton. However, none of these other types of music seemed to have as big an impact on people that rock did. Rock n roll, basically controlled the most of the twentieth century, with an entire era of children, teens and young adults to follow. But, where did rock come from? What is rock music, what started it? How did parents react? Rock n roll original started along the Mississippi River Valley (image right, Dennison). The music spread up and down the river, along the railroads and highways that ran near the river (Allen). It also traveled through Tennessee, Illinois, Cumberland and the Missouri rivers also known as the tributaries (Allen). The reason... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... It has to do with the beats, melody, elements and rhythm that make up the music. Those are the things that separate music from noise. Though, if you listen to early rock like Maybellene by Chuck Berry and What a Wonderful World by Louis Armstrong it is a little more clearly. When it comes to rock and jazz in specific; they are influenced by different properties around them. Even though jazz and rock are inspired by different things; they are still more alike than to any other type of music. However, they share one distinct difference. In jazz, it uses a shuffle rhythm and rock does not (Kajanova 13). What that means is that the same rhythmic values in rock are used in subtle shifts and digressions to enhance the relax feel of the music; along with an essence and easiness, that s why jazz and rock are different (Kajanova 13). Musical ideas of rock and jazz came from components that came from European folk and stylized dances that were changed into country music. The word free is a direct link to the concept of freedom, which Descartes describes as the ability to do or not do something . (O Connor) Freedom is not constrained. There can be no limits placed on it, lest it lose the fundamental nature of its definition. Hume reasoned that the sense of freedom linked to free will was that of liberty. that liberty is not a power of acting, but a power of choosing. If I can do what I want, but I can t choose what I want, then perhaps I am not free (Lacewing 5) I accept this is the more complete ideal of freedom, because it encompasses what free will ought to be. For example, physical determinism is when everything that exists or occurs is simply an arrangement of physical particles that conform to the laws of physics. Our tossing and failing to swish the paper ball in the waste basket was caused by a number of other events, which includes our choosing to toss the paper, which was also determined by other factors leading up to our decision. The characters in the novel have dreams and goals and not one dream ends well. That is why my thesis statement is: The Great Gatsby is really about unattainable dreams. The dreams I am discussing is GatsbyВґs American dream, Daisy s dream and Nick s dream. The dreams are based on the love story between Daisy and Gatsby. The final piece in Gatsby s American dream would be if he got Daisy to wed him. Daisy dreams of Gatsby but chooses between him and her current husband Tom. Nick wants Gatsby s life to be a happy life and he cares a lot about him. His dream is for the story to end well. When Daisy does not choose... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... He wishes that Gatsby s life should contain a happy ever after. There are a lot of dreams in the book but I want to distinguish these three main dreams and how none of them gets fulfilled. Gatsby s American dream The first dream that does not get fulfilled is the one of Gatsby. He starts off as an underprivileged boy and struggles his way to the top. We make his acquaintance when he is on the top of his life. He is enjoying his big house and his vast wealth. The one thing he cannot have is his lovely Daisy. Gatsby s story reflects the classical American dream: Anyone can make anything of himself/herself with just elbow grease, spirit and a whole lot of confidence. Jay loves Daisy and, sadly, she is the one thing which he cannot procure to his perfect life . His wealth is shown clearly, for instance when he throws huge parties just to have the chance of meeting or seeing Daisy. This behavior is not feasible if you do not have that kind of money which leads us to the conclusion that he is wealthy. The symbol that portrays the American dream is the green light. The light symbolizes wealth but also Daisy, the latter because there is a green light at the end of DaisyВґs dock. He reaches out for it just like he reaches out for his dream. We discussed the types of pollution and the complications that come from the different types of pollution. Jean Michel Basquiat Research Paper During an era where the American art scene carried out a delimiting appraisal of African American artist in the mainstream media, Jean Michel Basquiat comes into sight. The late 1870s New York City street art scene becomes the venue for Basquiat s appearance as SAMO . His work is synonymous with the market booms of the 1980s, and during this time he grew into one of the most influential artist of the occurring international movement that was ultimately ruled by figurative painting. The untrained quality of his painterly work reflects the intense, conceptual nature of his paintings, although, to some, the roughness of Basquiat s high art style might not seem sophisticated. In contrast, Basquiat s work offers a look into his concern for portraying a spiritual experience while at the same time achieving a balance with a poetic aspect and accompanying visual attributes. Basquiat s aesthetic of his collage style paintings plays on the contingency of the mainstream s racial constructions. However, much repeated is the standard issue biography of his life: his multi racial upbringing (Puerto Rican American mother, Haitian father); his quick rise to fame and his...
