Wolfshim In The Great Gatsby
Going extinct are the days spent loosing yourself in the excitement and adventure of a classic novel, As far as "classic" novels go, however, none are
more revered for their use of articulate language and lavish mental imagery than F Scott Fitzgeralds 1925 novel The Great Gatsby. Often considered
one of the most well know and well–read books of the twentieth century, partly due to its common use in school classrooms around the world, The Great
Gatsby has been awarded numerous prestigious accolades with one being named in homage to it. As a result it is no surprise that it has been the
subject of several reworking's to the silver screen and TV since its publication, with the most faithful, successful, critically acclaimed and expensive

However keeping in mind any film must withhold a reasonable play time as not to grow dull and dreary. This caused baz luhrmann to cut out, or
shorten, specific scenes from the novel when carrying it over into film. One such scene was where mr Gatsby introduced nick to one of his friends
and mentor Meyer Wolfshiem. Gatsby described Wolfshiem as a gambler who fixed the World Series. Wolfshiem appears only twice in the novel
with the second time being him refusing to attend Gatsby's funeral. This first appearance however is very important in the novel as in it Wolfshiem
gives a critical insite into Gatsby as a character. "Have you known Gatsby for a long time? .... I made the pleasure of his acquaintance just after the
war. But I knew I had discovered a man of fine breeding ..... the kind of man you'd like to take home and introduce to your mother and sister"
(4.118–118). However in the film this exchange of words between nick and Wolfshiem doesn't go for merely as long, nor does it go into the detail that
the novel does. As a result this leaves a major gap in the background story and persona of Gatsby throughout the

Baz Luhrman's Moulin Rouge Essay
Baz Luhrman's Moulin Rouge Moulin Rouge was Baz Luhrman's next great success after his polarizing fusion of Shakespearean dialogue and MTV
stylisations that was William Shakespeare's Romeo + Juliet. Released in 2001 Moulin Rouge caused considerable controversy amongst its audiences,

The music then comes to a sudden halt and a narrator begins by singing a basic summary of the story as the camera closes in on Christian's room,
establishing the film in the musical genre. The song also suggests the story will melodramatic featuring a variety of contrasting emotions such as love
and tragedy.
Superimposed images in the mise–en–scene portray an early twentieth century theme emulating the style of that in D.W.Griffiths' The Birth of a Nation

A sweeping shot through the streets of the city establishes a times and place. The sepia colour and grainy film quality emphasise the era in which the
story is set, contrasting with the special computer effects which re–occur throughout film.
The story is structured in a non–linear narrative which is established when Christians character is introduced by the voice over of Christian's thoughts

Essay Comparing Luhrman's Romeo And Juliet
Baz Luhrman's filmed adaption of Shakespeare's play, Romeo + Juliet was released in 1996 and starred Leonardo DiCaprio and Claire Danes as the
leading roles. The film brought the ancient script to a modern time based in Verona, Italy. The Montagues and Capulets are represented as enemy
mafia empires and swords are replaced with guns. This analytic essay will examine the various dramatic elements featured in the film, such as, roles
and relationships, tension and the mood and atmosphere displayed throughout the film. Similar to the original script, the film focuses heavily on the
roles and relationships between characters, especially Romeo and Juliet's love arc. Viewers experience Romeo and Juliet's tragic love story progress

Luhrman is able to build tension of task by giving the film's hero and heroine, Romeo and Juliet, a task that is bound to have set obstacles in the
way. The tension of task builds as there is a time limit of their task. Romeo and Juliet are forced to attempt to defeat the odds of fate and their
parent's constant unknowingly interference. Viewers experience tension of task when Juliet sees Father Lawrence to plot a plan to avoid getting
married to Paris. The intensity of the plot leaves viewers with unsettled emotions. This tension of task relates to the tension of surprise, as viewers
who are watching would be most likely surprised at Juliet agreeing to Father Lawrence's plot to fake her death. Overall, the tension of task and tension
of surprise all end up impacting the tension of relationship between Romeo and Juliet. The tension of relationship is their struggle with the social issues
surrounding them and their love. The dramatic tension elements all allow the film to have a sense of a tragic mood and

Luhrman's Romeo And Juliet
William Shakespeare's "Romeo and Juliet" is one of the most popular and analysed tragedies of all time. And with great popularity, comes even greater
film adaptions.
"Romeo and Juliet" is the 1968 film by director Franco Zeffirelli. Set in Verona of Italy, the movie follows Shakespeare's original script almost
entirely. Its traditional props, costumes, settins and dialogue give viewers an insight of what times would've been like back in the 16th century.
"Romeo + Juliet" is the 1996 film by director Baz Luhrman. Set in America's fictional "Verona Beach", Luhrman alters the well–known story through
the addition of current clothing, props, settins and drama to appeal to a wider and modern audience.
The two directors employ many different film ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Upon entering the crypt, strange yet romantic music is heard. The orchestral music is recorded quite loudly and hides the crying of Romeo and Juliet.
The pleonastic, gloomy melody adds to the film's tragedy by evoking emotion with its relation to the dramatic scene. Baz Luhrman uses music more
subtly to create an indubitable tension.
Baz Luhrman's "Romeo + Juliet" begins with a modern, Hawaiian–shirted Romeo opening the doors to the church where Juliet rests. Long shots
quickly transition into medium shots when displaying the setting. Romeo drags himself slowly along the walkway, to find his beautiful Juliet upon her
deathbed. He speaks Shakespeare's original farewells and drinks poison at the exact moment that Juliet awakens. Distraught and shattered, Juliet spots
Romeo's gun and shoots herself to forever be with her lover.
Luhrman incorporates many different film techniques to intensify the scene's heart wrenching tragedy. The scene initiates with a dolly shot the follows
the devastated and overwhelmed Romeo walking towards his resting wife. Compared to the hurried entrance of Romeo in Zeffirelli's film, it builds up
drama and shows the audience how much of a struggle it is for Romeo to even look at his partner. By building up the drama, Luhrman captures the
audience's full attention which leads to a vividly capturing

Gcse Film Techniques
The 2001 Baz Luhrmann Moulin Rouge production is assembled like a bunch frenzied snapshots of what a drug induced erotic encounter would look
like, or what we would imagine it would look like. The film does not depend on dialogue but on the way you imagine a fantasy from one angle and
then another with all of extreme contrast between dark and light colors and the fast movement of the film. Luhrman uses many different techniques to
convey images to his viewers. Examples of these are mise–en–scene, cinematography, and editing. All of these techniques are used to draw you into the
film; the uses of these together make a fantastic story about love.
Luhrman uses mise–en–scene to a great effect. A perfect example of this is in the first scene where we are introduced into Christian's attic. We are
shown Cristian being surrounded by papers, bottles, clothes, dust and dirt, with his face down in his arms. The lighting on him is a saturated blue light
and the detail of the typewriter, his dirty appearance, even more empty ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This film was a lot to take in due to is very unconventional use of mise–en–scene, cinematography, and most of all editing. I can honestly say that if I
had not taken this film appreciation course, sadly I would not have made it through the first 10 minutes of pure madness. Had I not been able to
better recognize the meaning or reasoning behind the editing style and use of artwork I would have been uninterested. Now, with all of that being said
the movie over all is a fantastic piece of artwork. From the beginning scenes with the perfect use of illuminated blue lighting, to the use of
cinematography to really bring us into the character's perspective, to the creative use of hyper–kinetic style editing to give the feeling of freedom. It all
comes together to really bring the audience a true feel of what the 1899 bohemian revolution would have been

Baz Luhrman's Film Romeo and Juliet
Baz Luhrman's Film Romeo and Juliet In the film "Romeo and Juliet", Baz Luhrman said that he was trying to recreate the impact of the original
Elizabethan production for a modern mass audience. I am trying to find out the challenges he faced and how he solved them and say how
successful he was in making the script work for a modern audience. The problems faced by a modern director of "Romeo and Juliet" Shakespeare's
original audience and theatre and the style and drama Shakespeare's original audience was made up of the whole social range. At one end of the
social scale were the working people. These were known as the groundlings because they were poor. They paid less and so they had to... Show more

The big writing I mentioned are important phrases picked out from the prologue such as "two star crossed lovers take their life." The beginning of
the film had a fast and furious opening which made it more dramatic. The beginning is set at a petrol station which tells us it is modern. I think
that because the language was introduced to us in this way anyone can watch it and gradually will be able to understand the language. Modern
attitudes to Shakespeare: Theatre & cinema audiences compared. In the theatre people used to think it is a "rowdy" day out. Going to the theatre
wasn't very comfortable in those days because a lot of people had to stand the whole way through the play, and wouldn't have been able to sit quietly
and watch the play like we do in cinemas. People didn't take plays to seriously and would have talked through the play and even sometimes shouted at
the actors. With a play like Romeo and Juliet there could have been audience participation too. People might have hissed at Tybalt, or cheered or
laughed when Romeo kisses Juliet because even Juliet was played by men too. The actors would have talked through the play about something

William Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet
William Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet
In Romeo and Juliet, love is depicted in several ways. Both Luhrman and Shakespeare represent love in different ways in different contexts to both the
Elizabethan era and the contemporary audience. Both the original and later manifestations of the text are valued because they both communicate to the
audience on the values of love and society by employing a variety of devices.
The central subject dealt within Romeo and Juliet is the subject of love. William Shakespeare and Baz Luhrman thus represent love to their audience
beyond the distinct ideas of love as simple sentiments. In the play, there are 2 basic levels – the real world of Verona and the private, intimate sphere of
Romeo and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This also reveals to the audience an empathy that the two "star–crossed" lovers were made fore each other. Luhrman achieves this via the use of
smitten, longing looks, the close–up shots, and the music of Des'ree (Kissing You).
Through Scene 5, Romeo continues to show himself as a hopeless romantic besotted with beautiful girls. His language indicates that he thinks of
love and commitment in terms of sight: "Did my heart love till now? Forswear it sight! For I ne'er saw true beauty till this night", as he says at his
first glimpse of Juliet. This statement recalls Scene 2, in which he spoke of " the devout religion of mine eye" and said that if his eyes were heretical
enough o consider another girl more beautiful than his Rosaline, his tears would turn to fire and burn at stake. However, as soon as he lays his eyes on
Juliet, his devotion to the apparently less beautiful Rosaline disappears – and a new religion is found for Romeo.
Shakespeare thus portrays Romeo and his love as an infatuation. This infatuation is evident in how instantaneously Romeo falls out of love with
Rosaline and into love with Juliet. At one stage, Rosaline was the "precious treasure of his eyesight", yet Romeo's embodiment of perfection was, a
few scenes later, his notion of defectiveness. This therefore reveals to the audience the instantaneous and reckless path of the two lovers, as well as the
fickleness of adolescent "love", diminishing at the sight of

The Arguments in the Capulets House of William...
The Arguments in the Capulets House of William Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet Act 3 Scene 5 of Romeo and Juliet could be interpreted in
several ways by a director, simple because of the way Shakespeare has written the play. He has included very few stage directions for the actors to
follow. This makes putting the play to life much more difficult as it could be openly criticized by fans of Shakespeare who disagree with the
directors interpretation. However, the distinct lack of stage directions give the director much more freedom as there is no set right or wrong way for
the play to be produced. The mood I would aim for in the production of this scene would mainly be one of anger and despair.... Show more content on

At this point she should be slowly walking away from Juliet, which, would represent how she is distancing herself from her daughter and is
repulsed by her reaction, despite it appearing to us that Lady Capulet herself is not entirely thrilled by the news. In Juliet's speech we see her anger
coming through straight away as she immediately curses an "oath against god". I would have her jump up after the curse and have most of the
camera shots focused on her. Beginning with a long shot, gradually zooming in as her anger increases. However, a couple of shots would needs to
show Lady Capulet's shock. To the audience this is an important demonstration of the relationship between her and Juliet, such as earlier on in the scene
when we see how uncomfortable Lady Capulet is in her daughters' room – they do not share a typical mother and daughter relationship. Lord Capulet
would enter in a very cheerful mood with a big smile on his face expecting Juliet to be much happier because of the new of the marriage. We can tell
she is surprised partly because of the many tear images he mentions in his speech such as "showering", "flow" and "tears". As he is told she doesn't
want to marry he erupts with anger. Capulet doesn't understand why Juliet doesn't want to marry County Paris. People in a modern audience

Similarities Between The Great Gatsby And Atonement
This essay looks at The Great Gatsby written by F.Scott Fitzgerald and Atonement written by Ian McEwan, and their film adaptations, The Great
Gatsby directed by Baz Luhrman and Atonement directed by Joe Wright. Many film directors that decide to adapt a novel to a film often change the
essence and core message of the original work of the author. According to Paulo Coelho, the reader has a certain perception about the characters,
scenes, and details of the novel. But when the reader goes to watch the film adaptation, all these perceptions and views are ruined and the reader often
ends up leaving the film feeling disappointed. However, I do not agree that Joe Wright and Baz Luhrman changed the message of the two novels. To a
large extent, I was not 'disappointed' by the film adaptations of The Great Gatsby and Atonement. I believe that both film directors have stayed loyal
and faithful to the novel, they did not change my opinion on how I viewed the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The valley of Ashes is a piece of wasteland with ashes of the train that carries the wealthy and upper class to New York. F.Scott Fitzgerald describes the
people as 'of men who move dimly and already crumbling through the powdery air' he gives us an image of the poor people – the people are stuck in
the failure of the American dream. They are like the waste of America, and they cannot move forward. We also get an image of an area filled with
dirt, thick air and poverty. In the film, we see details of this unpleasant place, and we get an image of the type of people who live there. In the film
we immediately see that this 'farm' is a symbol of the failure of the American dream. Baz Luhrman displays this farmland exactly or even better than
what one would imagine. I was not disappointed and in fact, I got a bigger understanding of what the failure of the American Dream

unnecessary over–explanation". (Caldwell) Caldwell believes that the narrator's existence in the movie does not have to be justified instead it has to
appear very natural.
As far as the setting is concerned, there are four significant settings in the novel: the East and the West Eggs , the Valley of ashes and New York each
of which has a pivotal role in the understanding of the characters and the events in the novel due to their symbolic meaning. In the beginning of the
novel Fitzgerald presents the East Egg with its seductive, alluring, enticing and tempting appearance yet it is pregnant with false and unattractive
realities. This is obvious in the relationship between Tom and Daisy. It is full of desperation , hypocrisy and hopelessness. Tom as acharacter is arrogant
and dishonest. He advances racist arguments and carries on public affairs whereas for Daisy she is a shallow character who wishes her daughter
to be a fool because she believes that one maintains a rich and pleasant life when he/she lives as a "beautiful fool". (Fitzgerald) The east Egg is
occupied with the Buchanan that has an aristocratic origin. On the other hand, the west Egg is associated with the 'newly rich' (Fitzgerald) and their
flashy manners that lacks aristocratic origin. The west Egg is also represented by Gatsby and his parties. Gatsby is seen as an enigma as he blends
the East Egg and the West Egg in his parties. The valley of ashes represents a picture of desolation, devastation and poverty.

Comparing Romeo And Juliet
Romeo and Juliet; a classic tragedy of two lovers who cannot be together due to circumstances beyond their control. The story has been done by
various movies, many of which change certain aspects in an attempt to breathe new life into this age old tale. In 1996, Director Baz Luhrman took
the story and placed it in a modern setting where the two rival families are mafia families. This sounds like an interesting take on the story and it
certainly was, but the movie turned out as a complete mess. The soundtrack is boring in every possible way. Almost every song is completely generic
and forgettable and the ones that do stick out by any measure still fail to attain my interest for very long. Although the cinematography and editing was

For one, it remained mostly faithful the original work with some minor and somewhat humorous changes to better fit the modern setting. The
dialogue was even left almost exactly how it was written by Shakespeare all those years ago, which was amusing at times, but it always sounded
out of place. The acting was by far the best part of the whole movie. Leonardo DiCaprio as Romeo and Claire Danes as Juliet played their parts to
the best of their abilities and the best moments of the movie were when they were the only two in the scene. The others also played their parts well
and if not for the outdated feel of the dialogue, it would almost seem as though all of it was something that had actually happened. If you are
considering showing this to anyone studying Romeo and Juliet, you would be better off showing them any other movie. Students will not learn
anything at all about the story by watching this as opposed to any other film adaptation. Although the movie remains somewhat faithful to the original
Romeo and Juliet while adding an interesting twist to the story, there is almost no educational value to the movie. It is very likely that students will
not understand most of what is going on here either because the story was not presented well, or because they are unable to take it

William Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet Essay
William Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet Although William Shakespeare wrote the story of 'Romeo and Juliet' in the 1500s, the themes depicted
in the play had been around for centuries. It was a classic tragic love story. William Shakespeare needed his story to appeal and be accessible to as
many people as possible. The main problem was that many people at the time could not read, therefore producing a book was pointless. So he
decided to write the story of 'Romeo and Juliet' as a play that people could go and see at the theatre. The play was very successful and was shown at
important theatres such as the Globe in London. Thousands saw it. In 1996 the film producer Baz Luhrman decided to make... Show more content on

Luhrman knew that his film would probably attract good publicity because it was the remaking of one of the most successful Shakespeare plays.
Critics and cinema audiences would be curious to see how the play was portrayed on the movie screen. 'Romeo and Juliet' is probably the most
studied Shakespeare play at school and so most people would be familiar with the story line. Although both versions of Romeo and Juliet use
language from the 16th century, the settings are very different. This is evident straight away in the film, as Baz Luhrman chooses to use a news
reporter instead of a narrator. Also, whereas Shakespeare sets the scene by the narrator describing in detail the males in the two families, Luhrman
shows this in a way a modern audience may find easier to understand, through their clothes. The Montague boys are betrayed in a comical way. They
are wearing shorts and Hawaiian shirts and appear not to be very serious about anything. They don't give the impression of being tough. The audience
is introduced to the Capulet boys who are in complete contrast, being smart and well dressed. Their body language is a lot more intimidating. There is
a scene that illustrates the culture of the time when it was considered cowardly not to want to get involved in fighting. The Montagues don't want to
show their fear and so end up

Theme Between The Great Gatsby And The Truman Dream
The American Dream, a concept of which every American is granted equal opportunity allowing the highest aspirations to be achieved and every person
to live a better, richer and fuller life. Throughout films "The Great Gatsby" and "The Truman Show" directors Baz Luhrman and Peter Weir both depict
a message to society presenting the unfulfilling reality of this pursuit. Both directors present this idea through the use of stylistic features, film
techniques and conventions including setting, costuming, characterisation, structure, style, camera angles, sound and lighting.
When comparing settings between The Great Gatsby and The Truman Show both films are very different however both communicate the same idea
of the perfect lifestyle of the American dream. Luhrman uses a wealthy 1920's lifestyle set in Long Island, New York City, dividing the island into
two areas known as the "west egg" and the "east egg" which can also be represented as old money and new money. In the 1920's and still to this
day Long Island was home of the rich and famous upper class citizens. Early in the film the audience is presented with an establishing shot of
Gatsby's mansion. Nick describes Gatsby's mansion by saying, " The one on my right was a colossal affair by any standard – it was a factual imitation
of some Hotel de Ville in Normandy, with a tower on one side, spanking new under a thin beard of raw ivy, and a marble swimming pool, and more
than forty acres of lawn and garden." Gatsby's mansion

There are many differences between Baz Luhrman's Romeo and Juliet (1997) and Franco Zefferelli's Romeo and Juliet (1968). When thinking about
contrast between these two productions many things need to be taken into consideration, one of the most important things is setting, as it can give
great emphasis on the situation. I realize how much time has passed while watching these two films, the things I have noticed are listed below: В·
Daggers and swords Г Guns В· Soft voices Г Tough voices В· Friendly Г Rivalry In the 1968 version, the fight scene is in the town square on a
bright, sunny day, making the situation look happy and shiny. Whereas in the 1997 version, the fight scene takes place on the cleverly named
'Verona beach' (Venice beach is a notorious gangster hotspot), this fight scene also takes place on a bright, sunny day, but this time it's not a clean
heat, it's more of a clammy, angry heat, which soon turns into a full blown storm to add drama. I am going to merge characters and costumes
together as they do go hand in hand in both films. There is a very friendly environment in the 1968 film, there is no direct separation between the
Montagues and the Capulets as they are both really friendly and cheerful and both wear mixed hot and cold colours. In the 1997 version there is a

This is what we of Romeo previous to act 1 scene 5, he is in love with Rosaline. We don't actually see Rosaline on stage, she is just a dramatic
device to show that the love he has for Juliet is true unlike the love he had for Rosaline that was a false love that only caused him grief and pain.
We see the suffering and sadness that Rosalines love is causing him by the way he describes it. For example he says " love is a smoke made with
the fume of sighs", this is a metaphor love is suppose to be a happy thing, but smoke is not a way it would normally be described, for the reason
that smoke is a negative thing, smoke chokes and kills people, all smoke is caused by fire and fire burns, so what he is in fact saying is that
Rosaline is burning his heart. In act 1 scene 5 we see Romeo noticing Juliet and instantly falling in love with her. We can now see that the love he is
feeling for Juliet is different to what he felt for Rosaline, it makes him happy and he describes her positively unlike how he described Rosaline. He
says, " She doth teach the torches to burn brightly" to describe Juliet, meaning she stands out from the crowd as she is better that everyone else. We

The use of guns in Romeo and Juliet is essential and is possibly the most important prop used in the film. The guns replace swords, illustrating the

is also evident in The Great Gatsby.Jay Gatsby's signet ring and cane are frequently displayed: indicative of Jay's stature. Luhrmanns use of cars and
the obvious colour similarities in both movies is evident. In Romeo and Juliet cars are another tool used to demonstrate the Montague and Capulet

Loyalty In Baz Luhrmann's Romeo And Juliet
Baz Luhrmann has used a variety of techniques to explore deep meaning of loyalty, love and hatred.
Luhrmann used loyalty in this scene, by use of camera shots and camera movements. He used a zooming out camera movement to capture the emotion
of Romeo , when Mercuito was dying in his hands, additionally a close up of Mercuito face when he was saying, "How dishourable vile submission."
This shot is showing the audience how hurt Mercuito is when Tybalt is attacking Romeo. Lastly a mid shot of Mercutio going to take out Romeo's gun.
This scene is showing the audience that Mercuito has very deep sense of Romeos honour.
Luhrman explores the concept of love, through the use of sound camera shots and camera angle.

The Prologue and First Scene of William Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet This essay will feature how different directors put the original text of
'Romeo & Juliet' into films using their own interpretations. In the prologue Shakespeare has given an insight into the play similar to a blurb on a
book or a film trailer. The prologue sets the scene, " In fair Verona (where we lay our scene)," making the play more believable, as in Shakespeare's
time scenery would have been minimal. In Elizabethan theatre the prologue would have been there to catch the audience and tell them that the play
was about to begin, as well as including general information, " two hours traffic of our stage," like how long the... Show more content on

Many directors have shown their interpretations of Shakespeare's 'Romeo and Juliet' through both stage and films. Two well–known performances of
'Romeo and Juliet' are by Luhrman and Zeffirelli. Baz Luhrman is one of many directors to show their interpretations of 'Romeo and Juliet'.
Luhrman repeats the prologue three times, in this sense he is trying to achieve the same as Shakespeare: to capture the audience. Luhrman
accomplishes this by the variety of ways in which he portrays the prologue. For example the first showing of the prologue is a new reader on a
television screen, this inclines the audience to believe important news is coming, it also suggest tragedy. The second time the audience view the
prologue is in a selections of straight cut clips, these are out takes from newspapers, as well as pictures of the setting and characters. It is very
similar to a short film trailer and the audience can relate to this, also as the shots are quick in concession this catches the viewers' eyes. The third
viewing of the prologue is fast black and white subtitles (of the prologue) appearing on the screen, this is there to make sure the audience got every part
of the prologue and to aid understanding. In general the prologue captures the audience,

"For never was a story of more woe
Than this of Juliet and her Romeo."
– William Shakespeare, Romeo and Juliet, 5.3
'Romeo and Juliet' is a tragic play about two star crossed lovers written by Shakespeare in 1595. The play is a timeless teenage tradgedy. "The play
champions the 16th Century belief that true love always strikes at first sight," (Lamb 1993: Introduction) and even in modern times an audience still
want to believe in such a thing as love at first sight. Act II Scene II the balcony scene displays that romantic notion perfectly.
"The most filmed of all plays, 'Romeo and Juliet', with its universal themes... remains uniquely adaptable for any time period," (Botnick, 2002).

Luhrman has based his version at Verona Beach; America and instead of basing it in the 16th century like Zeffirelli, he had his film based in the 20th

Luhrman never kept his film at a solid pace. "By modernizing these aspects of the play, and reconstructing the prologue, Luhrmann creates a movie that
is more interesting to the modern viewers." ("Franco Zeffirelli and Baz Luhrmann's Romeo and Juliet." 123HelpMe.com). As Zeffirelli may have
believed famous actors would steal his show he instead hired fresh new faces to give the movie a more fresh, innocence value, But Luhrman used
well known actors to play the lead roles. This worked because more people were attracted to the film by the actors.
Zeffirelli used symbols to help capture his audience. Some were subtle, others were meant to get the audiences attention. For example Romeo
climbing over the high wall to reach Juliet's balcony was a subtle symbol showing the heights and challenges he would face for true love, and even
the fact the scene was set on a balcony overlooking an orchid which was may have been meant to symbolise the 'natural love' or 'green' being fresh and
inexperienced. Some more prominent symbols were used, such as Juliet's particular costume in this scene, a symbol

of recreating the William Shakespeare play, Romeo and Juliet. Some of the comparisons of the two Romeo and Juliet plays, by William Shakespeare,
is the dialogue and the colors. For the dialogue both directors use some of the same lines of the William Shakespeare play. "Part fools! Put up our
swords; you know not what you do" (Act I, Scene i, p. 13). Another comparison between the Zefferelli and the Luhrmann film is, they kept the same

In Lurhman's Strictly Ballroom and Mitchell's It Follows, both directors use colour and music to enhance the experience of the romantic comedy and
horror genre films. Where Mitchell uses audio and visual cues to break the conventional style of horror films in It Follows, Luhrman's Strictly

Ballroom uses bright colors and musical cues to reassure the audience that the two main characters will end up together.
In Mitchell's It Follows, he enlists the help of composer Vreeland to create music for his film. Traditionally a composer for video games, Vreeland's
music consists of the 8–bit type music that is consistently found in Vreeland's main line of work. Whereas "traditional" horror films may carry
orchestral music, Vreeland's music is synthesized and therefore stands out because of it. In combination with his composer's music, Mitchell also uses
silence and natural ambience to further break the horror music stereotype. Where more popular horror films would use silence, darkness and loud
sounds to help increase tension, Mitchell uses silence and music to do that instead. Vreeland's music, which mainly contains higher pitched music
enhanced by low beats, is mainly used during key moments that involves the Follower. For example, during our second introduction to It, the music
consists of high pitched (flat sounding?????) notes

Baz LuhrmanВґs Version of Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet
One of the characteristics of Elizabethan and also Jacobean drama is the low number of stage directions and the lack of details they contain. As a
logical consequence theatrical representations or film versions of these ages may allow an important quantity of freedom in the performance. In other
instances stage directions and other important theatrical elements are consciously left aside in order to create totally different visions of the original
idea. That is not the case of Baz LuhrmanВґs version of Romeo and Juliet filmed in 1996, which despite the numerous alterations of the original play

From all this it follows that these types of alterations produced in the setting are intended to give the story an faster pace and variety to avoid any sign
of statism that is a general tendency of commercial films.
When dealing with characterisation it is necessary to consider that in Shakespeare's work neither the Capulets nor the Montagues are clearly seen as
good or bad characters. On the contrary, Luhrman shows Lady and Lord Montague much more moderate and peaceful than the furious Lord Capulet
and his frivolous and unfaithful wife. The representatives of both houses who fight in 1.1 are also depicted as good or bad characters. The Montagues
wear bright and colourful clothes making jokes and having fun. On the contrary the Capulets appear wearing dark clothes, serious and defiant and in
the fancy–dress ball scene while the latter are disguised as skeletons except for Tybalt, who is characterised as the Devil. Apart from this the Romeo
appearing in the film seems to take their feelings to the limit, and Juliet is more than fourteen years old. The aforementioned Tybalt is still being the
provocative and vindictive character whose behaviour provokes the tragic ending, however in LuhrmanВґs version he regrets having killed Mercutio
and this is what does not let him neither kill Romeo nor defend from his shots. The most noticeable change affects Paris since from being the young
gallant of the play he turns into an immature and ridicule millionaire.

Broadway Play Compare And Contrast Essay
I watched "Broadway Play" and "Baz Luhrman"
The first difference I noticed after watching two scenes was the involvement of audience. "Broadway Play" is a recorded film of a live play in which
audiences and actors both exist–actors must not only speak their lines to portray and reveal their emotions, but must also speak their lines in a way the
audience can understand it. "Baz Luhrman," on the other hand, is a film with a purpose to emphasize the theme of Romeo and Juliet with its viewers.
There are no restrictions in which actors speak their lines, as long as the main message can be understood by the viewers.
Involvement of audience also can be related to how music is being used in the two scenes. In "Broadway Play," music seems to be used as a transition
between dialogues of characters. The scene first starts off with a lively music, but the sound decreases as Lord Capulet takes control. In "Baz
Lurhman," music is used to maximize the emphasis on the love of Romeo and Juliet. An example would be when Romeo and Juliet are staring at each
other, with an aquarium in between. No words are spoken, but as Romeo and Juliet slowly engage in each other, viewers can easily understand that the
two are in love. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Social Taboos In Washington Irving's The Legend Of Sleepy...
Social taboos have taken a decline over the years. Writers have developed their writing topics over the past years given that social subjects have
changed. American literature has matured and become more known for the topics that are written about now compared to what they use to be. Writings
that were written by many famous authors show the changes in literature over time.
In Washington Irving's "The Legend of Sleepy Hollow," the small rural community did not react well to outsiders and their ways of life. Brom Bones is
a quite mysterious and mischievous man compared to how the Puritans and early colonists in North America behaved. Washington Irving was able to
openly write about fictional literature without such writing being considered a social taboo (Irving). However, in Jonathan Edwards's famous sermon,
"Sinners in the Hands of An Angry God," people were strongly encouraged to live a devoted life to God–not necessarily because they wanted to be a
good person, but because if they did not, they would go to hell. "Unconverted men walk over the pits of hell on a rotten covering," stated Jonathan
Edwards (Edwards). Similarly, Irving used supernatural figures in his stories to make them more interesting, and he also ... Show more content on

they would most likely be accused of witchcraft, and in some cases, even receive criminal charges. It was also not acceptable to socially attack
people (Pomansanof). For example, in "The Legend Of Sleepy Hollow," Irving made fun of Cotton Mather for carrying around a Cotton Mather book
(Irving). In The Crucible, it was expected that everyone was respectful to one another and got along. If a person was charged with criminal charges, the

Zefferelli does not vary the camera shots as much as Luhrman does, although he uses different angles to suit the atmosphere he wants to create. He also
uses many natural sounds, e.g. crowd noises, horses travelling. I have noticed in the opening, he uses non–diegetic sounds until Romeo's entrance.
Luhrman uses a lot more music, which is of great significance as this is what creates the atmospheric moods of the play. The lighting varies greatly in
each play. It plays an essential role in displaying the importance of character or in setting an atmosphere. In Zefferelli's production, the lighting in the
opening scenes is of a dull, low–key nature (no detail), and then develops as the market stall scene commences; the lighting is now high key, showing
more detail. This is in complete opposite to the lighting used in Luhrman's production, as Luhrman applies high key lighting straight from the
beginning. Zefferelli in his production shows a distinct contrast in the outfits worn by the two individual, different families. Both Luhrman and
Zefferelli use a stereotype view on the clothing. The use of sets in the film makes it far more effective and realistic. Zefferelli uses all the old–fashion
original props, such as swords etc. Luhrman replaces these swords applying the modern approach to killing, using guns.

Comparing Luhrman's Romeo And Juliet
The Shakespeare play "Romeo and Juliet is one of the most famous of all time. Because this play is so famous, there have been several Hollywood

play, they both have very different styles in all of the aspects of the movie and also very similar styles. There are many ways that these two films
are different from one another. One of these differences is the deliveries of their lines. In the 1996 version, you notice that the actors say their lines

In the play you picture the outfits they wear to be formal corset dresses and armour. They wear all of these things in both movies. They also have

in both movies, the lines said by the characters are almost or fully accurate to the play itself that you can barely even tell a difference in them. These
are all significant because they help you better understand the play of Romeo and Juliet and help you know more about the time periods. In
conclusion, both of these recreations of Romeo and Juliet definitely have their differences and similarities. Both of these directors had a different

Even though Fran became more confident, her costume and makeup still suited her personality. For example at the Pan–Pacific Grand Prix, all of the

effectively influence the portrayal and development of characters in the film.
In Strictly Ballroom, Luhrman uses many different camera angles and lighting techniques to exaggerate scenes, settings and even characters'

and that he is the protagonist of the film. Luhrman uses low angle shots when Scott and Fran are dancing at the end of the film, this is a good
technique used so the audience can see them dancing and also gives the audience the impression that they are dominate and confident. Another
character who is a good example of camera angles and film techniques being used on them to portray their personality is Barry Fife. Barry is a mean
character and Luhrman uses dark, reddish lighting to make him seem evil.

Essay about Film Retellings of Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet
In this essay I will compare and contrast "Romeo and Juliet" by William Shakespeare. Romeo and Juliet is one of William Shakespeare's most
famous works. I will compare and contrast the 1968 film by Franco Zefferilli and 1996 Baz Luhrman's film. It has been adapted into screenplays, and
remade countless times. Baz Luhrman's and William Shakespeare's versions of Romeo and Juliet are similar in theme, but are different in setting,
mood, and character personalities. The character of Romeo is a lovesick man who keeps changing his mind about the lady he fancies. To compare both
text and film, Romeo doesn't care about the feud between the Capulet's and Montague's until he meets Juliet. When Romeo sets eyes on Juliet he fall in

The character of Lady Capulet is mainly different in both text and film. The comparison of Lady Capulet in both text and Luhrman film is that she
feels more comfortable talking to Juliet with the nurse in the room and to prove this she says: "This is the matter. Nurse, give us a while– we must talk
in secret– nurse come back again." This shows us that Lady Capulet feels comfortable talking to Juliet when the nurse is around. To contrast, Lady
Capulet is quite royal in the text unlike Luhrman's film where Lady Capulet act more modern by dressing in short dresses and walking around with
a towel on her head. There is also where Juliet is being punished by her dad because of the marriage and in the text Lady Capulet tries to support
Juliet where on the other hand, Lady Capulet is more into her looks than Juliet in Luhrman's film. The character of Mercutio probably has the most
different personality in both text and film. This is because he is quite amusing but rude. Firstly, to compare Mercutio hates Tybalt and dies because
Tybalt kills him in both text and film. However, Mercutio is very rude and mean in Luhrman's film but in the text he is a little in

Wolfshim In The Great Gatsby

  • 1. Wolfshim In The Great Gatsby Going extinct are the days spent loosing yourself in the excitement and adventure of a classic novel, As far as "classic" novels go, however, none are more revered for their use of articulate language and lavish mental imagery than F Scott Fitzgeralds 1925 novel The Great Gatsby. Often considered one of the most well know and well–read books of the twentieth century, partly due to its common use in school classrooms around the world, The Great Gatsby has been awarded numerous prestigious accolades with one being named in homage to it. As a result it is no surprise that it has been the subject of several reworking's to the silver screen and TV since its publication, with the most faithful, successful, critically acclaimed and expensive ($108M) ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... However keeping in mind any film must withhold a reasonable play time as not to grow dull and dreary. This caused baz luhrmann to cut out, or shorten, specific scenes from the novel when carrying it over into film. One such scene was where mr Gatsby introduced nick to one of his friends and mentor Meyer Wolfshiem. Gatsby described Wolfshiem as a gambler who fixed the World Series. Wolfshiem appears only twice in the novel with the second time being him refusing to attend Gatsby's funeral. This first appearance however is very important in the novel as in it Wolfshiem gives a critical insite into Gatsby as a character. "Have you known Gatsby for a long time? .... I made the pleasure of his acquaintance just after the war. But I knew I had discovered a man of fine breeding ..... the kind of man you'd like to take home and introduce to your mother and sister" (4.118–118). However in the film this exchange of words between nick and Wolfshiem doesn't go for merely as long, nor does it go into the detail that the novel does. As a result this leaves a major gap in the background story and persona of Gatsby throughout the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Baz Luhrman's Moulin Rouge Essay Baz Luhrman's Moulin Rouge Moulin Rouge was Baz Luhrman's next great success after his polarizing fusion of Shakespearean dialogue and MTV stylisations that was William Shakespeare's Romeo + Juliet. The music then comes to a sudden halt and a narrator begins by singing a basic summary of the story as the camera closes in on Christian's room, establishing the film in the musical genre. Superimposed images in the mise–en–scene portray an early twentieth century theme emulating the style of that in D.W.Griffiths' The Birth of a Nation (1915). A sweeping shot through the streets of the city establishes a times and place. The sepia colour and grainy film quality emphasise the era in which the story is set, contrasting with the special computer effects which re–occur throughout film. The story is structured in a non–linear narrative which is established when Christians character is introduced by the voice over of Christian's thoughts whilst he is typing in his room. • 3. Essay Comparing Luhrman's Romeo And Juliet Baz Luhrman's filmed adaption of Shakespeare's play, Romeo + Juliet was released in 1996 and starred Leonardo DiCaprio and Claire Danes as the leading roles. The film brought the ancient script to a modern time based in Verona, Italy. The Montagues and Capulets are represented as enemy mafia empires and swords are replaced with guns. This analytic essay will examine the various dramatic elements featured in the film, such as, roles and relationships, tension and the mood and atmosphere displayed throughout the film. Similar to the original script, the film focuses heavily on the roles and relationships between characters, especially Romeo and Juliet's love arc. "Romeo and Juliet" is the 1968 film by director Franco Zeffirelli. Set in Verona of Italy, the movie follows Shakespeare's original script almost entirely. Its traditional props, costumes, settins and dialogue give viewers an insight of what times would've been like back in the 16th century. "Romeo + Juliet" is the 1996 film by director Baz Luhrman. Set in America's fictional "Verona Beach", Luhrman alters the well–known story through the addition of current clothing, props, settins and drama to appeal to a wider and modern audience. The orchestral music is recorded quite loudly and hides the crying of Romeo and Juliet. The pleonastic, gloomy melody adds to the film's tragedy by evoking emotion with its relation to the dramatic scene. Baz Luhrman uses music more subtly to create an indubitable tension. Baz Luhrman's "Romeo + Juliet" begins with a modern, Hawaiian–shirted Romeo opening the doors to the church where Juliet rests. Long shots quickly transition into medium shots when displaying the setting. Romeo drags himself slowly along the walkway, to find his beautiful Juliet upon her deathbed. He speaks Shakespeare's original farewells and drinks poison at the exact moment that Juliet awakens. Distraught and shattered, Juliet spots Romeo's gun and shoots herself to forever be with her lover. Luhrman incorporates many different film techniques to intensify the scene's heart wrenching tragedy. The scene initiates with a dolly shot the follows the devastated and overwhelmed Romeo walking towards his resting wife. Compared to the hurried entrance of Romeo in Zeffirelli's film, it builds up drama and shows the audience how much of a struggle it is for Romeo to even look at his partner. By building up the drama, Luhrman captures the audience's full attention which leads to a vividly capturing ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 5. Gcse Film Techniques The 2001 Baz Luhrmann Moulin Rouge production is assembled like a bunch frenzied snapshots of what a drug induced erotic encounter would look like, or what we would imagine it would look like. The film does not depend on dialogue but on the way you imagine a fantasy from one angle and then another with all of extreme contrast between dark and light colors and the fast movement of the film. Luhrman uses many different techniques to convey images to his viewers. Examples of these are mise–en–scene, cinematography, and editing. All of these techniques are used to draw you into the film; the uses of these together make a fantastic story about love. Luhrman uses mise–en–scene to a great effect. A perfect example of this is in the first scene where we are introduced into Christian's attic. Had I not been able to better recognize the meaning or reasoning behind the editing style and use of artwork I would have been uninterested. Now, with all of that being said the movie over all is a fantastic piece of artwork. From the beginning scenes with the perfect use of illuminated blue lighting, to the use of cinematography to really bring us into the character's perspective, to the creative use of hyper–kinetic style editing to give the feeling of freedom. The problems faced by a modern director of "Romeo and Juliet" Shakespeare's original audience and theatre and the style and drama Shakespeare's original audience was made up of the whole social range. The big writing I mentioned are important phrases picked out from the prologue such as "two star crossed lovers take their life." The beginning of the film had a fast and furious opening which made it more dramatic. The beginning is set at a petrol station which tells us it is modern. I think that because the language was introduced to us in this way anyone can watch it and gradually will be able to understand the language. Modern attitudes to Shakespeare: Theatre & cinema audiences compared. In the theatre people used to think it is a "rowdy" day out. Going to the theatre wasn't very comfortable in those days because a lot of people had to stand the whole way through the play, and wouldn't have been able to sit quietly and watch the play like we do in cinemas. People didn't take plays to seriously and would have talked through the play and even sometimes shouted at the actors. With a play like Romeo and Juliet there could have been audience participation too. People might have hissed at Tybalt, or cheered or laughed when Romeo kisses Juliet because even Juliet was played by men too. The actors would have talked through the play about something ... • 7. William Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet William Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet In Romeo and Juliet, love is depicted in several ways. Both Luhrman and Shakespeare represent love in different ways in different contexts to both the Elizabethan era and the contemporary audience. Both the original and later manifestations of the text are valued because they both communicate to the audience on the values of love and society by employing a variety of devices. The central subject dealt within Romeo and Juliet is the subject of love. William Shakespeare and Baz Luhrman thus represent love to their audience beyond the distinct ideas of love as simple sentiments. In the play, there are 2 basic levels – the real world of Verona and the private, intimate sphere of Romeo and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This also reveals to the audience an empathy that the two "star–crossed" lovers were made fore each other. Luhrman achieves this via the use of smitten, longing looks, the close–up shots, and the music of Des'ree (Kissing You). Through Scene 5, Romeo continues to show himself as a hopeless romantic besotted with beautiful girls. His language indicates that he thinks of love and commitment in terms of sight: "Did my heart love till now? Forswear it sight! For I ne'er saw true beauty till this night", as he says at his first glimpse of Juliet. This statement recalls Scene 2, in which he spoke of " the devout religion of mine eye" and said that if his eyes were heretical enough o consider another girl more beautiful than his Rosaline, his tears would turn to fire and burn at stake. However, as soon as he lays his eyes on Juliet, his devotion to the apparently less beautiful Rosaline disappears – and a new religion is found for Romeo. Shakespeare thus portrays Romeo and his love as an infatuation. This infatuation is evident in how instantaneously Romeo falls out of love with Rosaline and into love with Juliet. At one stage, Rosaline was the "precious treasure of his eyesight", yet Romeo's embodiment of perfection was, a few scenes later, his notion of defectiveness. The Arguments in the Capulets House of William Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet Act 3 Scene 5 of Romeo and Juliet could be interpreted in several ways by a director, simple because of the way Shakespeare has written the play. He has included very few stage directions for the actors to follow. This makes putting the play to life much more difficult as it could be openly criticized by fans of Shakespeare who disagree with the directors interpretation. However, the distinct lack of stage directions give the director much more freedom as there is no set right or wrong way for the play to be produced. At this point she should be slowly walking away from Juliet, which, would represent how she is distancing herself from her daughter and is repulsed by her reaction, despite it appearing to us that Lady Capulet herself is not entirely thrilled by the news. In Juliet's speech we see her anger coming through straight away as she immediately curses an "oath against god". I would have her jump up after the curse and have most of the camera shots focused on her. Beginning with a long shot, gradually zooming in as her anger increases. However, a couple of shots would needs to show Lady Capulet's shock. To the audience this is an important demonstration of the relationship between her and Juliet, such as earlier on in the scene when we see how uncomfortable Lady Capulet is in her daughters' room – they do not share a typical mother and daughter relationship. Lord Capulet would enter in a very cheerful mood with a big smile on his face expecting Juliet to be much happier because of the new of the marriage. We can tell she is surprised partly because of the many tear images he mentions in his speech such as "showering", "flow" and "tears". As he is told she doesn't want to marry he erupts with anger. Capulet doesn't understand why Juliet doesn't want to marry County Paris. People in a modern audience ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 9. Similarities Between The Great Gatsby And Atonement This essay looks at The Great Gatsby written by F.Scott Fitzgerald and Atonement written by Ian McEwan, and their film adaptations, The Great Gatsby directed by Baz Luhrman and Atonement directed by Joe Wright. Many film directors that decide to adapt a novel to a film often change the essence and core message of the original work of the author. According to Paulo Coelho, the reader has a certain perception about the characters, scenes, and details of the novel. But when the reader goes to watch the film adaptation, all these perceptions and views are ruined and the reader often ends up leaving the film feeling disappointed. However, I do not agree that Joe Wright and Baz Luhrman changed the message of the two novels. To a large extent, I was not 'disappointed' by the film adaptations of The Great Gatsby and Atonement. I believe that both film directors have stayed loyal and faithful to the novel, they did not change my opinion on how I viewed the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... (Caldwell) Caldwell believes that the narrator's existence in the movie does not have to be justified instead it has to appear very natural. As far as the setting is concerned, there are four significant settings in the novel: the East and the West Eggs , the Valley of ashes and New York each of which has a pivotal role in the understanding of the characters and the events in the novel due to their symbolic meaning. In the beginning of the novel Fitzgerald presents the East Egg with its seductive, alluring, enticing and tempting appearance yet it is pregnant with false and unattractive realities. This is obvious in the relationship between Tom and Daisy. It is full of desperation , hypocrisy and hopelessness. Tom as acharacter is arrogant and dishonest. He advances racist arguments and carries on public affairs whereas for Daisy she is a shallow character who wishes her daughter to be a fool because she believes that one maintains a rich and pleasant life when he/she lives as a "beautiful fool". (Fitzgerald) The east Egg is occupied with the Buchanan that has an aristocratic origin. On the other hand, the west Egg is associated with the 'newly rich' (Fitzgerald) and their flashy manners that lacks aristocratic origin. The west Egg is also represented by Gatsby and his parties. Gatsby is seen as an enigma as he blends the East Egg and the West Egg in his parties. The valley of ashes represents a picture of desolation, devastation and poverty. ... The story has been done by various movies, many of which change certain aspects in an attempt to breathe new life into this age old tale. In 1996, Director Baz Luhrman took the story and placed it in a modern setting where the two rival families are mafia families. This sounds like an interesting take on the story and it certainly was, but the movie turned out as a complete mess. The soundtrack is boring in every possible way. For one, it remained mostly faithful the original work with some minor and somewhat humorous changes to better fit the modern setting. The dialogue was even left almost exactly how it was written by Shakespeare all those years ago, which was amusing at times, but it always sounded out of place. The acting was by far the best part of the whole movie. Leonardo DiCaprio as Romeo and Claire Danes as Juliet played their parts to the best of their abilities and the best moments of the movie were when they were the only two in the scene. The others also played their parts well and if not for the outdated feel of the dialogue, it would almost seem as though all of it was something that had actually happened. If you are considering showing this to anyone studying Romeo and Juliet, you would be better off showing them any other movie. Students will not learn anything at all about the story by watching this as opposed to any other film adaptation. Although the movie remains somewhat faithful to the original Romeo and Juliet while adding an interesting twist to the story, there is almost no educational value to the movie. William Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet Essay William Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet Although William Shakespeare wrote the story of 'Romeo and Juliet' in the 1500s, the themes depicted in the play had been around for centuries. It was a classic tragic love story. William Shakespeare needed his story to appeal and be accessible to as many people as possible. The main problem was that many people at the time could not read, therefore producing a book was pointless. So he decided to write the story of 'Romeo and Juliet' as a play that people could go and see at the theatre. The play was very successful and was shown at important theatres such as the Globe in London. Thousands saw it. In 1996 the film producer Baz Luhrman decided to make... Although both versions of Romeo and Juliet use language from the 16th century, the settings are very different. This is evident straight away in the film, as Baz Luhrman chooses to use a news reporter instead of a narrator. Also, whereas Shakespeare sets the scene by the narrator describing in detail the males in the two families, Luhrman shows this in a way a modern audience may find easier to understand, through their clothes. The Montague boys are betrayed in a comical way. They are wearing shorts and Hawaiian shirts and appear not to be very serious about anything. They don't give the impression of being tough. The audience is introduced to the Capulet boys who are in complete contrast, being smart and well dressed. Their body language is a lot more intimidating. Throughout films "The Great Gatsby" and "The Truman Show" directors Baz Luhrman and Peter Weir both depict a message to society presenting the unfulfilling reality of this pursuit. Both directors present this idea through the use of stylistic features, film techniques and conventions including setting, costuming, characterisation, structure, style, camera angles, sound and lighting. In the 1920's and still to this day Long Island was home of the rich and famous upper class citizens. Early in the film the audience is presented with an establishing shot of Gatsby's mansion. Nick describes Gatsby's mansion by saying, " The one on my right was a colossal affair by any standard – it was a factual imitation of some Hotel de Ville in Normandy, with a tower on one side, spanking new under a thin beard of raw ivy, and a marble swimming pool, and more than forty acres of lawn and garden." We see the suffering and sadness that Rosalines love is causing him by the way he describes it. For example he says " love is a smoke made with the fume of sighs", this is a metaphor love is suppose to be a happy thing, but smoke is not a way it would normally be described, for the reason that smoke is a negative thing, smoke chokes and kills people, all smoke is caused by fire and fire burns, so what he is in fact saying is that Rosaline is burning his heart. In Lurhman's Strictly Ballroom and Mitchell's It Follows, both directors use colour and music to enhance the experience of the romantic comedy and horror genre films. Where Mitchell uses audio and visual cues to break the conventional style of horror films in It Follows, Luhrman's Strictly Ballroom uses audio and visual cues enhance the romantic comedy experience further. Where It Follows, relies on visuals to tell it's story, Strictly Ballroom uses bright colors and musical cues to reassure the audience that the two main characters will end up together. In Mitchell's It Follows, he enlists the help of composer Vreeland to create music for his film. Traditionally a composer for video games, Vreeland's music consists of the 8–bit type music that is consistently found in Vreeland's main line of work. Whereas "traditional" horror films may carry orchestral music, Vreeland's music is synthesized and therefore stands out because of it. In combination with his composer's music, Mitchell also uses silence and natural ambience to further break the horror music stereotype. Where more popular horror films would use silence, darkness and loud sounds to help increase tension, Mitchell uses silence and music to do that instead. Vreeland's music, which mainly contains higher pitched music enhanced by low beats, is mainly used during key moments that involves the Follower. When dealing with characterisation it is necessary to consider that in Shakespeare's work neither the Capulets nor the Montagues are clearly seen as good or bad characters. On the contrary, Luhrman shows Lady and Lord Montague much more moderate and peaceful than the furious Lord Capulet and his frivolous and unfaithful wife. The representatives of both houses who fight in 1.1 are also depicted as good or bad characters. The Montagues wear bright and colourful clothes making jokes and having fun. On the contrary the Capulets appear wearing dark clothes, serious and defiant and in the fancy–dress ball scene while the latter are disguised as skeletons except for Tybalt, who is characterised as the Devil. Apart from this the Romeo appearing in the film seems to take their feelings to the limit, and Juliet is more than fourteen years old. • 34. Broadway Play Compare And Contrast Essay I watched "Broadway Play" and "Baz Luhrman" The first difference I noticed after watching two scenes was the involvement of audience. "Broadway Play" is a recorded film of a live play in which audiences and actors both exist–actors must not only speak their lines to portray and reveal their emotions, but must also speak their lines in a way the audience can understand it. In "Broadway Play," music seems to be used as a transition between dialogues of characters. The scene first starts off with a lively music, but the sound decreases as Lord Capulet takes control. In "Baz Lurhman," music is used to maximize the emphasis on the love of Romeo and Juliet. An example would be when Romeo and Juliet are staring at each other, with an aquarium in between. • 35. Social Taboos In Washington Irving's The Legend Of Sleepy... Social taboos have taken a decline over the years. Writers have developed their writing topics over the past years given that social subjects have changed. American literature has matured and become more known for the topics that are written about now compared to what they use to be. Writings that were written by many famous authors show the changes in literature over time. In Washington Irving's "The Legend of Sleepy Hollow," the small rural community did not react well to outsiders and their ways of life. Brom Bones is a quite mysterious and mischievous man compared to how the Puritans and early colonists in North America behaved. Washington Irving was able to openly write about fictional literature without such writing being considered a social taboo (Irving). However, in Jonathan Edwards's famous sermon, "Sinners in the Hands of An Angry God," people were strongly encouraged to live a devoted life to God–not necessarily because they wanted to be a good person, but because if they did not, they would go to hell. "Unconverted men walk over the pits of hell on a rotten covering," stated Jonathan Edwards (Edwards). This is in complete contrast to Baz Luhrmans production, with the exception of the language used in both productions. Zefferelli does not vary the camera shots as much as Luhrman does, although he uses different angles to suit the atmosphere he wants to create. He also uses many natural sounds, e.g. crowd noises, horses travelling. I have noticed in the opening, he uses non–diegetic sounds until Romeo's entrance. Luhrman uses a lot more music, which is of great significance as this is what creates the atmospheric moods of the play. The lighting varies greatly in each play. It plays an essential role in displaying the importance of character or in setting an atmosphere. In Zefferelli's production, the lighting in the opening scenes is of a dull, low–key nature (no detail), and then develops as the market stall scene commences; the lighting is now high key, showing more detail. This is in complete opposite to the lighting used in Luhrman's production, as Luhrman applies high key lighting straight from the beginning. Zefferelli in his production shows a distinct contrast in the outfits worn by the two individual, different families. Both Luhrman and Zefferelli use a stereotype view on the clothing. One of those movies was directed by Baz Luhrman and was released in 1996 and there is also a movie directed by Carlo Carlei which was released in 2013. Even though these two movies were both based on the same play, they both have very different styles in all of the aspects of the movie and also very similar styles. There are many ways that these two films are different from one another. One of these differences is the deliveries of their lines. Romeo and Juliet is one of William Shakespeare's most famous works. I will compare and contrast the 1968 film by Franco Zefferilli and 1996 Baz Luhrman's film. It has been adapted into screenplays, and remade countless times. Baz Luhrman's and William Shakespeare's versions of Romeo and Juliet are similar in theme, but are different in setting, mood, and character personalities. The comparison of Lady Capulet in both text and Luhrman film is that she feels more comfortable talking to Juliet with the nurse in the room and to prove this she says: "This is the matter. Nurse, give us a while– we must talk in secret– nurse come back again." This shows us that Lady Capulet feels comfortable talking to Juliet when the nurse is around. To contrast, Lady Capulet is quite royal in the text unlike Luhrman's film where Lady Capulet act more modern by dressing in short dresses and walking around with a towel on her head. There is also where Juliet is being punished by her dad because of the marriage and in the text Lady Capulet tries to support Juliet where on the other hand, Lady Capulet is more into her looks than Juliet in Luhrman's film. The character of Mercutio probably has the most different personality in both text and film. This is because he is quite amusing but rude.
