The document analyzes the codes and conventions used in double page spreads across different music magazines including Q Magazine, Billboard, Rolling Stone, and NME. Some key findings include:
- Images dominate the page and are used to identify the subject of the article. Facial expressions are sometimes visible through close-up shots.
- House styles and colors are generally continued within articles to maintain consistency, though some magazines break this convention.
- Text columns, while usually three, can vary in number but still maintain an organized, easy-to-read structure.
- Quotes, drop caps, white backgrounds, and direct address are common techniques used to attract readers and create relationships between artists and the audience.

3. Codes and conventions of Q magazine
double page spread
• Image of the artist is half of the double page spread, this emphasises that he is the subject of
the article in a clear and obvious way
• The J over the text is unique and is an effective way of incorperating the house colour
scheme into the article.
• The signature house style of the magazine is carried into the double page spread which
creates consitency throughout the magazine, this is something I’d like to include in my own
magazine
• The image of the artist is a close up which alows us to see the artists facial expressions, direct
mode of address has been used in a way, this creates a personal relationship between the
artist and the reader.
• The columns in the article go against the usual convention of 3 coloumns but it still works just
as well with 2 and looks just as proffessional
4. The background is a simple colour

5. Codes and conventions of Billboard
magazine double page spread
• The main image dominates most of the page and crosses over both of the double page
spread differently to Q magazine where the image is just on one side of the page.
• Colours from the masthead of the magazine are used in the article which creates a
consistency to the magazine but it as not as obvoius as the style carried out in Q magazine
• The spread uses different colours at the start of new paragraphs which entices the reader to
read the main parts of the article.
• One of the artists quotes is written in larger text and a different colour near the image this is
quite a common convention in most double page spreads
6. No direct mode of address used

7. Codes and conventions of rolling stone
double page spread
• A house style hasn’t been continued throughout the double page spread which is not usual
to most other magazines, but the black and white theme does look very nice and also
organised, but it is not something I would like to include in my magazine as I like pictures to
be in colour .
• A long shot has been used of the artist and she is not looking at the camera which means no
direct mode of address was used which is unusual and is not something I would want to use
in my own magazine
• Not much text has been put on the double page spread, which is also unusual as usually the
text is one one of the most important things on the page apart from the image.
• This is an unusual style of double page spread and I don’t think I would use this sort of style
in my own music magazine
8. Quote from the article used as
