4. The word “sunni” comes from the word
“sunnah” which means the teachings and
actions of the prophet Muhammed.
Therefore, the term “sunni’’ refers to those
who follow or maintain the sunnah
(teachings) of the prophet Muhammed .
6. Alevism’s origin is in “Shia Islam”. “Shia” comes
from the Arabic word “Shiaat Ali”. It means “the
partisans of Ali”. Ali is Prophet Muhammed’s
cousin and son-in-law.
So, the ones who follow Ali after Muhammed’s
death are called “Alevis” in Turkey.
Alevism has become a religious group which
combines Anatolian folk Shi’ism with sufi
elements. We can give “Bektashi tariqa” as an
example.
7. The differences between two sects originated from
the question who could succeed Muhammed after
his death.
The Sunnis wanted Abu Bakr, a close of friend of
Muhammed, to be Caliph after his death.
The Alevis wanted Ali, cousin and son-in-law of
Muhammed, to be the Caliph.
In short, the differences are not because of beliefs
but because of political reasons.
8. DIFFERENCES Both of them fast but in different times. Sunnis
fast for a month in Ramadan and Alevi people fast
for twelve days in Muharrem Month.
Alevi people come together in assembly houses.
Their ceremonies include music, singing and
dancing (semah). Sunni people go to mosques five
times a day to pray.
11. Alevi people believe in God, Muhammed and Ali,
and 12 Imams (people of Muhammed’s
household).
For Sunnis, God is unique.
For Sunnis, Pilgrimage to Kabba is one of the five
pillars of Islam. But for Alevi people, visiting
Mecca isn’t an Alevi practice.
12. They both belieSveI Min thIeL sAamRe IHTolIyE BSook: The Qur’an
and accept the other Holy Books.
They both agree that Muhammed was the final Prophet.
They both believe in God Angels and all God Prophets.
