4. Definition
• What is management ?
Management is the act or art of being responsible or in charge and
conducting or supervising something with a degree of skill and address
• Why manage drugs ?
There are following three reasons
i. Firstly, drugs are part of the link between the patient and health
services. Consequently, their availability or absence will contribute
to the positive or negative impact on health.
ii. Secondly, poor drug management, particularly in the public sector
of developing countries, is a critical issue
iii. Finally, drugs are no longer the responsibility of health workers
only. .
5. Introduction
• The Drugs which are purchased from the market are
stored in drug stores to provide a uniform supply of
drugs to the patients.
• The drugs are stocked in containers, such as drums
and boxes and on flexible racks and shelves etc.
• It must be ensure that drugs which are stored in a
drug store remain preserved during their storage.
• There should not be any damage due to high
temperature or exposure to sunlight.
• The drugs are to be stored as per the prescribed
conditions of their storage.

6. Rationale of Drug store
management
If drugs are properly managed & stored
then the drug will remain stable for longer
time.
If drugs are maintained in proper manner
then we can easily grab them.
7. The drugs stored in a drug store be
arranged in such a way that they are easily
traceable as and when required.(As Per My
Report)
1. According to manufacturers -
Medicines arranged by the name of
manufacturers
2. According to pharmacological
action – In small drug stores where
the pharmacist is very knowledgeable
about pharmacology

8. Storage and Maintenance
4. Alphabetically – This method is followed by both large & small
drug stores where, the medicines are arranged by alphabetic order.
5. Dosage form – Products comes in different form such as tablets,
syrups, injectable & external use products such as ointments &
creams. In this system, medicines are categorized according to
their dosage forms.
6. Frequency of use – Products which are moved quickly or very
often should be placed in the front of the room or closing to
staging area. This system is used in combination with another
system.
7. Expiry Date – Products which are near to expiry date are kept
aside
9. Conditions For Storage Drugs
Drugs are stored under condition that prevent
contamination & as far as possible, deterioration
• “Well closed container” precautions are taken in
relation to the effects of the atmosphere, moisture,
heat &light.
• “Protected from moisture” means that the
product is “stored in air tight container”
9
10. Conditions For Storage Drugs
• “Protected from light” the product is stored either in
a container made of material that absorbs actinic light
sufficiently to protect the contents from change
induced by such light.
• “Temperature”
* In a deep freeze (-15°C)
* In a refrigerator 2°C -8°C
