• Antibiotics are powerful medicines that fight bacterial
infections.
• Antibiotics are effective against all microbes except
viruses.
• The major problem associated with use of antibiotics is
Antibiotic Resistance. Resistance occurs when
bacteria change in some way that reduces or
eliminates the effectiveness of drugs, chemicals, or
other agents designed to cure or prevent infections.
The bacteria survive and continue to multiply causing
more harm.

Penicillin is a group of antibiotics which include penicillin
G, penicillin V, procaine penicillin, and benzathine
penicillin(intramuscular).They are derived
from Penicillium fungi. Penicillin antibiotics were among the
first medications to be effective against many bacterial
infections caused by staphylococci and streptococci. All
penicillins are β-lactam antibiotics.
Cephalosporins are a class of β-lactam antibiotics.
Cephalosporins are indicated for treatment of infections
caused by bacteria. It is active against Gram-
positive bacteria and Gram-negative bacteria (e.g.)
Tetracycline is a broad-spectrum antibiotics.It is
commonly used to treat acne,infection and other infections
caused by bacteria. (e.g.)
