Essay on The Personality of Scrooge
Ebenezer Scrooge is the major character in the story, A Christmas Carol written by Charles Dickens.
A Christmas Carol is about how a "cold–hearted, tight fisted, selfish" money grabbing man is
offered an opportunity of a life time, to change his behaviour, attitude... to have a second chance in
life.
The theme of this novella is to look at the good you do in life and how it carries over after your
death. The moral of the book is; "People can make changes in their lives whenever they really want
to, even right up to the end."
In this essay I am going to distinguish the personality of Scrooge also show you how he was at the
beginning of the novella in the 1st Stave to how he changes at the end in the 5th Stave.

Also, Dickens describes Ebenezer Scrooge as a 'cold–hearted, tight fisted, selfish man' who despises
Christmas and all things that incite happiness. In addition, the words have a rhythm, they all have
three syllables. The title of this book is A Christmas Carol. A Carol is a hymn, the three descriptive
words is representing a carol so this refers back to the title. A quote from the book is 'The cold
within him froze his old features, nipped his pointed nose, made his eyes red'. Dickens portrays
Scrooge's characteristics like the wintry weather conditions. This illustrates the readers what kind of
personality Scrooge has, to me it's like Dickens is describing Scrooge like Jack Frost (from the
Santa Claus 3 film). He is truly mean at the beginning but at the conclusion of his experience he
changes to a nice man. Although Dickens describes Scrooge as a mean, rude man, it's like Dickens
is teaching us the viewers a lesson that everyone has a different side of them it just takes hard work
to transform them.
'Squeezing, wrenching, grasping, scraping, clutching' these words portray Scrooge and how he acts
upon things and how his actions and behaviour effects people around him. The repeating, rhythmic
hard consonant sounds which have a negative effect on Scrooge shows the readers that he is a vile,
wealthy man. Also the words are really strong it's like a claw, he has clutched on a bad, mean area of
life and he can't let go and until he lets go he is going to stay

Scrooge returns to the home of Jacob Marley, where Marley's ghost tells him that he is going to have

he was a squeezing, wrenching, grasping, scraping, clutching, covetous, matured sinner!

What Is Charles Dickens Moral Message and How Does He...
Christmas Carol
What is Charles Dickens moral message and how does he communicate it to the reader in "A
Christmas Carol"?
Christmas carol is a novel written by Charles Dickens (1812–1870) during the Victorian times in
London. For me to explore the moral messages I feel it is important to acknowledge exactly what
the message is. Charles Dickens throughout the novel communicates; Charity, goodwill, family,
kindliness and humility as moral messages, however, I personally feel Charles Dickens most
powerful and important messages are Goodwill, Family and Charity however I will still look at all
moral messages as they all play an important role in A Christmas Carol.

From this reply Scrooge is reminded from his words in Stave 1; " if he be like to die he had better do
it and decrease the surplus population." Scrooge is humbled by the Cratchitt's gratitude over what
little they have and he learns that as long as you have family you don't need money.
Lastly, family is a moral message to which dickens tries to communicate with the reader and this is
shown in stave 3. The ghost takes Scrooge to places outside of the London area he sees a family of
miners in a hut on a barren moor, two lighthouse keepers and sailors on a ship; and they all know
they have got each other but no matter what they will celebrate as much as they want, even though
there not with their family they have their friends. This all made them aware to act more kindly to
one another as its Christmas.
Fred – Scrooge's nephew is having a Christmas party and Scrooge is taken and shown by the sprit.
Fred explains that Scrooge is to be pitied, not despised. And his money does him no good; Fred then
explains, ""his offences carry their own punishment". The guesses of the party then play a game to
find the identity of a thing to which questions asked can only be answered to Yes or No. The guests
are then amused by the fact when Fred wife sister guesses that the mystery object is Scrooge. The
mystery object was described as unwanted and this made Scrooge leave and he had come to a

Symbolism In Jacob Carol
"Marley was dead, to begin with – there's no doubt whatever about that... Old Marley was as dead as
a door–nail."(Stave 1, Pg. 9) A Christmas Carol's character Jacob Marley plays an important role in
the main character, Ebenezer Scrooge's growth. In the novel, Mr. Marley, when he appears as a spirit
to inform Scrooge that the christmas spirits would be visiting him, he appears in chains along with
cash boxes, deeds, keys, padlocks, and ledgers. It is said in the book that he chose to wear the chain
as well as the other objects voluntarily. However, the reason for Marley's doing so in his afterlife
was never revealed. I believe that the symbolic meaning behind Marley's locks and chains have to
do with his wealth, him being tied to his job, and his greed during his lifetime. I feel that this
symbolism also played a large part in Scrooge's growth throughout the novel because it further
drilled the idea into his head that if he doesn't change his attitude toward life he'd end up chained
down just as Marley is. It seems as if he chooses to wear the chain freely, but he is never truly free
of his own sin and regret. The chains and objects symbolize his wealth because when he was alive,
Marley worked in a counting house. In modern terms a counting house would be like a loan office,
but increased interest was charged to loan clients money. He and Scrooge seemed like similar
people, and if this was the case, he may have gained wealth in life just as Scrooge did; by working

George Orwell, Charles Dickens, And George Orwell's Animal...
The Divided Classes
Throughout the Industrial Revolution, the lower class's population continued to increase as more
and more people became poor and fell into poverty. Although the upper class was prosperous and
wealthy, they failed to assist the struggling population; this only made the problem worse. As the
issue of poverty became more critical, it became a topic that authors commonly wrote about. George
Orwell, Charles Dickens, and Jonathan Swift were authors who presented the problem of a poor
community and a neglectful upper class to the people through the use of allegory and satire. This
helped to easily convince and influence their readers. Through the use of satire and allegory, George
Orwell, Charles Dickens, and Jonathan Swift effectively address the pressing issue of the upper
class's ignorance and mistreatment towards the lower, struggling class.
George Orwell expresses satire and allegory throughout Animal Farm by representing events that
unfolded in the book to events that occurred in real life, and characters in his novella to historical
figures. During the Russian Revolution and the reign of Joseph Stalin, the lower class of the
population struggled severely under harsh conditions, including being underfed and overworked.
The upper class ruled the majority of the population whilst living in comfort and enjoying luxuries
such as plentiful food and proper clothing for the cold. The author conveys the hardships of the poor
and the comfort of the upper class

How Does Donald Duck Lose Your Personality
Have you ever watched a cartoon or a show or even a movie and you see yourself in or through that
character ? I recently found myself watching the movie Aladdin with my little cousin. I saw how
Jasmine stood up for the poor kids in the village and also how she spoke her mind to her dad about
who she had to marry. I saw how we connected in some way and how I am a lot like her. There are
other characters who I am also like in other ways. The three fictional characters that most represent
my personality are Donald Duck for his short temper, Bubbles from The Powerpuff Girls for her
sweetness, and Jasmine from Aladdin for her way of standing up for what's right and speaking her
mind no matter who she is against. Although Donald is a duck and a guy, we do have the common
aspect of losing our temper after being pushed to a certain point. In an episode on TV called Donald
Duck cured duck, Donald Duck loses his temper because he can't open the window and he starts
breaking plates and he even breaks through walls. Daisy Duck then tells him she won't go out on a
date with him until he cures his temper. Donald Ducks temper makes his friends not want to be
around him. Although his friends tend to have patience for him, in this episode Daisy Duck didn't
and she refused to go out with him because of his moodiness. Since Donald is very caring and
doesn't want to lose his friends he does what he can to keep his temper under control. Like Donald
Duck, I do control my temper, but after being pushed too far I tend to lose it. Although I do have a
lot of patience, when I do get pushed over the edge, I often get very moody. Usually when this
happens my family tries to leave me alone until I can calm down on my own. For example, one day
my parents and siblings had gone out to the store with my dad's side of the family. That day I wasn't
feeling very good so I was allowed to stay at home, but since I am the only one that is good with
children, they left all of their kids for me to take care of. I ended up having to take care of four three
year olds, two five year olds, and two six month old babies. After a couple of hours I felt
overwhelmed and all the kids were driving me crazy so, I called my parents screaming and yelling at

Research Paper On A Nightmare Before Christmas
A Nightmare Before Christmas Is it More About Halloween or Christmas? "Just because I cannot
see it, doesn't mean I can't believe it."–Jack Skellington. In this quote, Jack Skellington from A
Nightmare Before Christmas is talking about Christmas. Some people think that A Nightmare
Before Christmas is a Halloween movie, but others argue that it is a Christmas movie. However, I
think that A Nightmare Before Christmas is a Christmas movie because it is mainly about learning
about Christmas. My first reason for thinking this way is because most of the songs are about
Christmas. For example, the songs include : "What's This?", "Town Meeting Song", "Jack's
Obsession", "Kidnap The Sandy Clause", and "Making Christmas" are all songs about Christmas.
"What's This?" Introduces Christmas and shows joy, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
"Jack's Obsession" is about how Jack obsesses with Christmas and how to make it work in
Halloween Town. "Kidnap The Sandy Clause" is about Lock, Shock, and Barrel, Oogie Boogie's
henchmen, ( Oogie Boogie will be mentioned later ) getting orders from Jack to kidnap Santa
Clause. My final piece of evidence for this reason is "Making Christmas". "Making Christmas" is
about making Halloween Town like Christmas. Again, this is my first reason because most of the
songs are about Christmas. My next reason is because Jack saves Santa Clause ( Sandy Clause) from
Oogie Boogie and saves Christmas. Even though Jack wouldn't have to save Santa or Christmas if
the didn't order his kidnap and interfere with the holiday, it is still important. Since Jack saves Santa
from Oogie Boogie, it allows Santa to set everything right in Christmas town with his joy and
delivers the correct presents to the correct children. If it wasn't for Jack, Christmas would have been
ruined and their would be a lot of sad kids and unhappy parents. Again, this is my second reason
because Jack saves Santa Clause and

How and Why Does Dickens Present the Change in Scrooge in...
'A Christmas Carol' covers a period of 24 hours from Christmas Eve to Christmas Day. It is a simple
morality tale of the radical change in the character Ebenezer Scrooge from being bitter, ironfisted
and miserable to becoming a new, openhearted and charitable man.
The book was first published in 1843, a time when many of the wealthy people neglected the old
Christmas spirit of charity. In addition, the Industrial Revolution had further done away with the
simple pleasures of the season. Dickens' intentions in writing 'A Christmas Carol' were not only
linked to his childhood and sympathy for the poor, but he was also acting as a philanthropist by
making an appeal to the rich people of society to mend their selfish ways.

Dickens uses the supernatural as a method of holding a mirror up to Scrooge who is forced to
confront the error of his ways. Dickens shows us that if Scrooge fails to do this it will result in him
having a similar fate to Marley. Dickens uses the ghost to emphasize that there is a chance of
redemption for Scrooge "that you have yet a chance and hope of escaping my fate". Dickens' use of
the supernatural continues throughout the story as a means of arousing nostalgia, thought, fear and
action by Scrooge. All of these emotions, which Dickens shows us Scrooge is feeling, demonstrate
the gradual change in Scrooge throughout the book, and as these changes take place, our thoughts
and feelings towards the relationship we have with Scrooge also changes; we begin to understand
him and see under his hard outer shell.
Through the visitations of the three spirits, Dickens reveals feelings in Scrooge that have been
repressed, which facilitates Scrooge's change. The ghost of Marley warns Scrooge "You will be
haunted by Three Spirits" The spirits are used by Dickens to take Scrooge through a journey of self–
discovery and ultimately transformation.
The journey to his childhood results in visible signs of emotion in Scrooge, which we do not
associate with him to start with, as this one of the first ways that Dickens presents the change in
Scrooge. '"Your lip is trembling"'. '"And what is that upon

Difference Between A Chmas Carmas And The Christmas
Although it isn't hard to believe that people do not realize that there are difference between the book
and the movie, in this case, that fits right into that subject. Here are some of the difference between
the movie and the novel. One difference in the movie was that the Ghost of Christmas yet to come
has a hand of skin. not a hand without skin that was written in the book. I think that this makes a
difference because it doesn't show a big impact on the story. I think Charles Dickens put the skinless
hand in his story to give his story a "chill factor". I don't think the director of the movie version of A
Christmas carol thought that it was a big deal or a big impact on the rest of the story. Another
difference between the book and movie is that Scrooge doesn't go to church at the end of the story. I
think it make a big difference, though because it shows how much Scrooge has changed since the
three spirits came to visit him. It shows a before and after t effect that made a big impact on the rest
of the story. Another difference between the book and movie is that Scrooge doesn't go to church at

Poverty In George Orwell, Jonathan Swift, And Charles Dickens
Poverty is known across the United States and also the world. It is when a family or just one person
is below the yearly salary marked as poverty. Many people try to help those who are in need like
homeless shelters, people that give money to beggars, and authors. Authors inform their audiences
about this serious topic and get the upper classes to help instead of using them for a workforce with
low salary. They do this with satire and allegory to grab the audience's attention. George Orwell,
Jonathan Swift, and Charles Dickens utilize satire and/or allegory in their works to alter those in
power view of the lower class of society. George Orwell uses satire and allegory in his novel Animal
Farm to inform his audience about the lower classes and how they suffer to poverty. The animals on
the farm tried and somewhat succeeded to make a socialism farm. Later in the book, it shows that
the pigs (smartest on the farm) start to get more benefits than any other working class poor animal.
This leads to purges, Snowball (a fair leader) getting exiled, and low intake on food for the animals.
Animal Farm uses satire and allegory in this work by having this ridiculous farm run by animals, but
have it connected to a serious topic like the upper class and how they treat the lower classes. The
upper class animals and humans both know that, " 'If you have your lower animals contend with,' he
said, 'we have our lower classes!' " (Orwell 136). This statement shows that any where around the

"My purpose was, in a whimsical kind of masque which the good humour of the season justified, to
awaken some loving and forbearing thoughts, never out of season in a Christian land" (Dickens
Preface). Dickens wanted to convey a theme of the Christmas Spirit in A Christmas Carol and it
shined through in Christmas Cupid.
Ebenezer Scrooge represents the Victorian rich who treat those below them poorly and only care for
their own well–being. He is a man who cares only for money because of the neglect he received, as

Christmas. Sloane tries to fix her relationships, but it doesn't seem like it does much help. Slone and
Scrooge connect in this part because they're starting to realize the consequences of their actions.
The Ghost of Christmas Yet to Come shows up in two completely different ways. Scrooge's Ghost is
depicted as a "solemn Phantom, draped and hooded, coming, like a mist along the ground, towards
him" (Dickens 71). Whereas Sloane's shows up dressed as Santa Clause. Scrooge is shown the death
of a man and how people are rejoicing it and he is shown the death of Tiny Tim, Bob Cratchit's
crippled son. The Phantom shows Scrooge a tombstone with his name on it. The death of the man
everyone was rejoicing was his. Scrooge realizes the consequences of his actions and learns that he
must change his ways and does so. He makes sure he fixes his ways by sending a turkey to
Cratchit's house, donating a large sum to a man that had previously asked for one. He even gives
Cratchit a raise the next day. Sloane realizes that she will end up completely alone if she doesn't
change her ways. She goes to her mother's house and reconciles with and then takes her to her friend

A Christmas Carol : A Ghost Story Of Christmas
The strengths for the play A Christmas Carol: A Ghost Story of Christmas were strong because the
play was amazing! I have never seen the movie, but the play flowed well and explained it for people
who have never watched the movie. I read over a summary of the movie and the script followed it
exactly. I have seen a lot of plays and this play to me did not have many weaknesses. A weakness I
did notice was some scenes lasted too long and could have been cut shorter. For example, the village
dancing scene and the dancing scene during the Ghost of Christmas Past could have been cut short.
This was the first play I have been to where they did not black out the stage to move from scene to
scene. I sometimes got distracted when props and scenery was moving off and on stage. The way the
ghost ensemble walked from the back to the front slowly made it feel creepier and added more effect
to the play. Ebeneezer Scrooge played by John Brocato was just amazing. His acting definitely made
the play. John Brocato was meant to be Scrooge. I think the director saw how well he could act and
change his emotion. The way he portrayed Scrooge is the way I would imagine it in a movie. He
played a great grumpy old man that eventually falls in love with Christmas. Ghost of Christmas
Present/Fruit Vendor played by Joe Evans was my second favorite. I think the director saw how jolly
and happy he could act. Joe Evans was jolly and you could feel the Christmas rub off of him. After

Dickens' Use of the Supernatural in A Christmas Carol
A Christmas Carol is built upon numerous contrasts: rich and poor, family and loneliness, generosity
and miserliness, affection and cruelty, past, present and future. Most of these contrasting forces are
brought to light within the character of Scrooge himself. The compulsive, lonely, miserly man, who
eats his abstemious meals in the shadows, emerges from his cold–heartedness into a generous, fun
loving, warm and caring man. Dickens uses a lot of rich contrasting imagery within the character
Scrooge to prepare the reader for his conversion well before the concluding chapter.

The ghost of Christmas present presents them, wretched and almost animal like, to scrooge with the
warning "this boy is Ignorance. This girl is Want. Beware of them both, and all of their degree, but
most of all beware of this boy, for on his brow I see that written which is doom, unless the writing
be erased." These children are grimy and thin, the kind of children Scrooge would walk past on the
street without a second thought. They are shown to him in such an appalling manor that Scrooge
begs to help them, "have they no refuge or resource?" and he is reminded of the coldness of his
words earlier in the story. They are shown to him I believe because, like he would be after his death,
he is powerless to help them and this causes outstanding amounts of guilt to whelm up within
Scrooge. I also believe the twins had another message, though this time not for Scrooge. Dickens
wanted to make all the readers of A Christmas Carol, the warm and tender Christmas novella, aware
of the fact that it was based on the poor and starving, Dickens wanted to warm the heart of the
public but also get them to reach out to the young and starving children on London's street, which
like Scrooge they just walk past every day. The twins are very powerful in getting this message
across as the reader could not just ignore the fact that they are just as bad as Scrooge if they do

A Christmas Carol
Stave 1:
Scrooge's character is established early in stave 1. Dickens shows his popularity by showing us his
relationships with people in his surroundings. We can tell scrooge is unpopular as the narrator
portrays him as a "Tight fisted hand at the grindstone."
Scrooges name give us a similarity between the word scrounge what is to be tight with money and
every opportunity to make money, this automatically helps us launch an understanding that he is
tight with his money, what is necessary to associate him as nasty old man. When the narrator is
describing Scrooge he uses words that help us negotiate an opinion that Scrooge is an aggressive

Scrooge shows no affection towards him by declining his invitation to dinner on Christmas day.
Scrooge does all that he can to turn his nephew ideas on Christmas. Scrooge's argument on
Christmas is that they have "no right to be merry as you are poor enough." And he said he lives in
his word of fools. We can tell he wants to be alone by telling him to "keep Christmas in his own
way" literally telling him to leave him alone. Scrooge's relation towards the two gentlemen
collecting money for a charity is that he instantly finds a defense of why he shouldn't give money.
He says that he shouldn't give money because there are actually places for the homeless people to go
scrooge feels "it's none of my business" and he feels that "it's enough for a man to understand his
own business and not to interfere in others." This also gives us ways of proving how cold hearted he
is. Scrooge's relationship with his employee Bob
Cratchit is one where he mistreats poor bob. Scrooge neglects Bob and he thinks that he has to get
his moneys worth for his work. The ways that Scrooge mistreats Bob Cratchit is by not allow him to

The Personality of Scrooge Essay example

Scrooge Symbolism
Based on what I read Scrooge is a grumpy person with no feeling for the people around him.
Dickens doesn't like this and says it is a big no–no is his world. Scrooge spends money on only what
he needs to get by. He doesn't get why Christmas is such a big deal, even though everyone else is
celebrating it with cheer. In fact, he hates the Christmas cheer and expresses his feelings. He
despises poor people and say that they should go to jail. He does not have any joy, but he's not
depressed. Scrooge almost wants to damage people's day and does it often. The text says he is a hard
worker as it states "he was a tight–fisted hand at the grind–stone, Scrooge! A squeezing, wrenching,
grasping, scraping, clutching, covetous, old sinner!" He can also really stand the elements, the cold.,
the hot, the rain, the snow, the... anything. Not only can he withstand the elements, but based on the
information from the text I inferred that he is the elements, resilient and unforgiving.
The text explicitly states that the Spirit is the "Ghost of Christmas Past" (Scrooge's past), even the
spirit quotes "I am the Ghost of Christmas Past" in it conversation with Scrooge. First they went to
Scrooge's depressed and disheartened childhood. Immediately after seeing himself, he sobs with bad
memories. Scrooge says "I wish"... "but it's too late now", the spirit asks his "what is the matter",
Scrooge says, "Nothing. There was a boy singing a Christmas Carol at my door last night. I should
like to have given him something" that's all". This is Scrooge's first time thinking about doing
something favorable, after thinking about his childhood.
Then they go to another one of Scrooge's Christmas breaks spent at school, but in this instance, his
little sister comes to bring him home, she said that their dad finally let little Ebenezer come home
for good. Lastly Scrooge remembers the time he had partied one Christmas and for a few bucks they
made the whole neighborhood of kids happy. Scrooge's fiancee says that he cares too much about
money and not her so she breaks up with him. The ghost then disappears through the floor. Scrooge

he became more giving. In this essay I will be talking about how Scrooge's attitude changes
throughout the story, how the spirits made him feel guilty through the feeling of sympathy and how
he became more charitable.
Throughout the story Scrooge's attitude changes. He starts off the story being a grumpy old man that
not many people like. He yells at them and is disrespectful. Some examples of this are, he doesn't
accept his nephew's invitation for supper, and he wants to cut Mr. Cratchit's salary since he is going
to miss a day for Christmas. However after the spirits visit him, he starts to feel regret. For instance,
while the spirits were showing him memories, he was feeling sorry for his past actions, he didn't
want to watch them and was afraid of what was to come. Towards the end of the story he becomes
happier. He feels bad for what he has done to the people around him in the past. For this reason he
buys the Cratchit's a big turkey since he has overworked and underpaid Bob Cratchit. In summary, at
the beginning of the story Scrooge is an angry grumpy old man but after the spirits visit him he
realizes that he should be happier and nicer to people or he will die alone. During the story while the
spirits are visiting Scrooge he starts to feel guilty. They make him feel guilty by showing him his
past memories. The spirit of Christmas past showed Scrooge the memories of when he lost the love
of his life because he was being too greedy and too focused on his business. The spirit of Christmas
Present showed him what is currently happening at the Cratchit house. Scrooge sees the Cratchits
eating supper, and the spirit tells Scrooge that he needs to help Tiny Tim because he is dying. The
spirit of Christmas Future showed Scrooge what is going to happen to him. Scrooge is shown a
funeral for Tiny Tim with lots

A Christmas Carol Analysis
During the time this piece was written, the holidays were in the mind of the people. It is almost
Christmas in 1946 and all the parents are buying presents for their children and spending a great
deal of money. This article speaks to the parents to spend quality time with their children, as
opposed to just buying them gifts. The article is trying to persuade the reader that tangible gifts are
not what make a child happy. The author's idea about the family is that they should be together
reading stories and singing Christmas carols; and that will create happiness for the family. It also
talks about getting children presents, and how adults get offended when children do not pay
attention to certain toys, or they break something immediately. It seems that adults forget that infants
and young children do not know the concept of value yet. Everything in their playing field is equal
to them and creates just the same amount of fun. And adults need to keep that in mind when buying
presents for their children. The assumption this article has is that parents will have the time to spend
with their children doing arts and crafts and being able to sit around and listen to Charles Dickens A
Christmas Carol. Parents have a lot to do before Christmas and this author believes they should put
all that on hold to be together. The author also assumes that all the families are nuclear and are
capable of having that kind of Christmas. It does not account for an absent parent, or a lower

Christmas Carol Comparison
When Christmas time is nearing, some people like to sit next to cozy fires and watch movies, read
books, or sing songs. People who do this mostly read or watch or sing timeless Christmas classics,
like Rudolph the Red–Nosed Reindeer, the Cricket on the Hearth, or It's a Wonderful Life. Among
these Classics is a piece called A Christmas Carol, which has had written and film adaptations.
There are many similarities and differences between these two versions. Today I will be presenting
the similarities and differences between the 2009 CGI Movie by Disney and a version of the original
Book by Charles Dickens. I will also be presenting my opinion on which is better.
At the beginning of A Christmas Carol, the corpse of Jacob Marley is shown. The narrator starts
talking about his sad death. In the movie, Bob Cratchit is the narrator, while, in the book, a group of
narrators narrate the story. Some versions of A Christmas Carol even have the ghost of Jacob Marley
narrating the story! It is revealed that Marley was the business partner of Ebenezer Scrooge, a
grouchy, cheap, old wiser. After the weakest excuse of a mourn, Scrooge went back to work. The
book reveals what what Scrooge does to others and vice versa. Afterwards, a bit of the town is
revealed. The movie does the revealing the other way around, with the town first, followed by others
and Scrooge. When Scrooge enters his work place, there is a time jump to 7 years later. The sign to

Short Story Of Scrooge
Scrooge, a dull and hateful old miser, always grumpy, miserable, and lives a lonely life. According
to the text, he has a frosty rime on his head, thin lips blue and spoke shrewdly in a grating voice. He
has a pointed nose with shriveled cheeks. The text refers to him as "bitterer than any wind that blew
and no warmth could warm, no wintry weather could chill him." In the first part of the story, one
night a ghost appears in his house and he turns out to be his deceased aged work partners ghost,
Marley. According to the text, Scrooge asks Marley why spirits walk the earth and why they are
coming to him. Marley replies with " It is required of every man, that the spirit within him should
walk abroad among his fellowmen and travel far and wide, and if that spirit does not do that while
he is living he must do so after death. It is doomed to wander the world and witness what it cannot
share, but might've shared on earth and turned to happiness!" Marley is saying that since the people
did not enjoy the satisfactory possessions in life, they are forced to experience that after their death
and to convince other people not repeat what he did. Marley tells him that he is doomed to wander
through the world and witness what he did not share, but should have shared on earth and what he
should have turned into happiness!
In the next part of the story, the first ghost appears and goes by the name " The Ghost Of Christmas
Past" and the significance of this ghost is to show Scrooge

Literary Analysis of Israel Horovitz´s The Christmas...
In Israel Horovitz's stage production of "A Christmas Carol: Scrooge and Marley", the spirit of the
characters develops into an adventurous journey. The setting is Christmas Eve and a poor man is
working diligently while the owner, Ebenezer Scrooge, refuses to let him have Christmas Day off.
Later that night at Scrooge's house, his old, dead, partner in business, Marley, visits him and tells
him to change his ways and that three ghosts will come to haunt him: The Ghost of Christmas Past,
The Ghost of Christmas Present, and The Ghost of Christmas Future. They all show him scenes in
which Scrooge realizes his guilt and eventually make Christmas a better time for everyone he
originally affected. Scrooge changes from a cold–hearted miser, ... Show more content on

First, Present takes him to his employee's house where Scrooge learns how poor and sorrowful his
employee, Bob Cratchit, is. Their family is struggling and Tiny Tim, the youngest member of the
Cratchit family, is crippled. Unfortunately for Tiny Tim, death may be coming very soon, but he
does not care. He is very optimistic and loves everyone by saying, "God bless us everyone," (704).
Next, Present shows Scrooge his nephew's house and how everyone dislikes him, yet his nephew
still toasts to his life. Once he does so his wife seems astonished as she says, "A toast to him?"
(709). Soon the Ghost of Christmas Present deliquesces and disappears. Suddenly, the Ghost of
Christmas Future appears and tries to teach him not to continue being a miser. Although Future
doesn't say a word, he changes Scrooge the most. The first thing Future shows him is three men
talking about a certain man that died. "I thought he'd never die," (712) stated one of the men. Next,
Future shows Scrooge a group of poor thieves trading some of the valuable items they stole.
Apparently, one of the thieves stole clothes right off of a dead man's body. "They'd have wasted it, if
it hadn't been for me," (715) said the thief. Then, Future took Scrooge to the Cratchit's house where
they learned Tiny Tim had died as well as some man everyone was talking about. Scrooge didn't
know who the dead man was. He'd simply assumed it was Marley; however, it turned out to be him.

difficult for the hotel executives to discuss with ownership anything, which did not relate to a return

servers who barely scrape enough money together to pay their bills to bean counters who only relate

the operational servers. The hotel was forced to cut back on any event that would cost money and
not give a direct return. This included limiting the employee luncheons to once per quarter and the
annual holiday party expenditure to less than two thousand dollars. The owners would also put on a
wage freeze for nearly two years while escalating the server's expense for health care and other basic

pushed his agenda of inequality and disrespect. In fact, the entire reporting structure became so

Charles Dickens ' A Christmas Carol
It can be easily depicted that Christmas is a time of the year to share joyfulness. In Charles Dickens'
A Christmas Carol, Ebenezer Scrooge is a character that is effortlessly described as a hardheaded
cold man. It is simple to judge the character of Scrooge in this manner, but it is important to
recognize the change in his personality throughout the story. Scrooge's transformation happens very
quickly, but he becomes generous and caring only when he is forced to see himself through a
stranger's eyes. By the visitations of three spirits, Scrooge realizes the harsh and ungenerous man
that he is. The Ghost of Christmas Past shows Scrooge the pitiable child he was, and the Ghost of
Christmas Yet to Come, shows Scrooge as a neglected corpse. These two images have a significant
impact on Scrooge and his development as a character as he reacts to these in a regretful manner.
As the story begins, Scrooge is a grumpy old man who wants nothing to do with the people around
him as he sends off a caroler one night and pays no attention to homeless children. When being
visited by the Ghost of Christmas Past, Scrooge is taken back to many different events in time, but
one in particular has a greater effect on him. Scrooge is taken to the neighborhood where he was
raised, and comes across the boarding school he attended. He sees the schoolboys running merrily
out of the school to leave for Christmas break, but realizes that the school is not yet deserted, but a

A Christmas Carol Analysis
"Bah, Humbug" an iconic line from a story we all know and love, said by a character that was made
for us to hate. Charles Dickens published A Christmas Carol in 1843, in part as an attempt to garner
some success, and also as an attempt to convince the masses of kindness and charity at Christmas
time. While it did not gain him commercial success, the legacy this story has left, succeeded in
inspiring our society to give a little more at Christmas time. Nowadays, the story has become
synonymous with Christmas. It would be hard to imagine a Christmas without some adaptation of
Dickens masterpiece. As A Christmas Carol is one of the most adapted Literary sources, it is no
surprise that Dr. Who would take a crack at it. The episode "The Unquiet Undead" aired in 2005,
and takes place during the time of Dickens, and while it is not a direct adaptation of A Christmas
Carol. it's many allusions, and similar story structure, make it an apt analogy for it. Of course,
revision is Dr. Who's game, so the alien ghosts, and reanimated corpses are not a surprise either.
According to Leitch, a story that is not a direct adaptation of a source, but instead an analogy to the
story by way of invoking the characters and/or style of the author or developing their story in a way
feels inspired by the source, is an analogue (Leitch, Pg. 113). "Unquiet Undead" is in spirit, inspired
by A Christmas Carol, even though the story is not a direct adaptation. The episode takes place in
Dickens' time, around the end of his life, at Christmas time, and we know this because Dickens is a
character in the episode. The story is that alien ghosts from the future are haunting a mortuary as
gas, and possessing dead bodies in order to live again. So, not quite A Christmas Carol, but it does
have some parallels. Most of which come in the form of Dickens' character. He takes the place of the
Scrooge character, and while he is not greedy like Scrooge, he is grumpy, and lacks belief in the
impossible. Also, like Scrooge, he has become estranged from his family. The conversion that would
take place in Scrooge, from greed to kindness, becomes a conversion from a grumpy cynic, to an
ecstatic believer, that has been inspired anew. He also decides that he

Although it is a ghost story, A Christmas Carol is an uplifting tale. To what extent do you agree?
A Christmas carol by Charles Dickens is a significant novella written in the Victorian era. The
protagonist Ebenezer Scrooge is used to demonstrate the upper class society and their attitude
towards the poor. Throughout this redemption story, Dickens combines a descriptions of hardships
faced by the poor with a heart–felt sentimental celebration of the Christmas season. The novella
contains a dramatic and comic element as well as a deep felt moral theme. The text promotes the

The author illustrates that Scrooge who is depicted as "hard and sharp as a flint" is a greedy miser
whom is so old and coldhearted that nothing other than his profits will phase him. Dickens uses the
scene when the ghost of Christmas past, "a child–like old man" uses flashbacks to show Scrooge of
the memories he once made to show the nature of the much younger character. This is evident when
Fan "a little girl much younger than Scrooge" had brought out the affection of her older brother as
they planned "to be together all the Christmas long, and have the merriest time in all the world."
What is important about this example is not just that it shows the compassion Scrooge once felt but
also that Scrooge is not truly crooked and horrible to the core establishing the uplifting and inspiring
feeling to readers.
The title of the novella, A Christmas Carol, is immediately recognized by the reader as hardly
appropriate for the first stave. Stave one does not resemble the happy and cheerful world of
Christmas trees and presents, but instead the reader is exposed to, what can only be described as,
'ghost story' features. Ghost stories are meant to be scary, typically the ghosts that appear in this

Remembering Charles Dickens Charles Dickens is a famous author who wrote numerous books
which were enjoyed by many throughout the years. His books are known xquisite characters and
real–life settings. Charles experienced difficult times as a young boy ("Charles Dickens" par. 7).
These difficult times followed him throughout his life. He uses ideas from these struggles to express
his feelings through the books he writes. The many struggles of Charles Dickens' early childhood
greatly influenced his writing, making him a great novelist from the Victorian times. Charles

8). When his father was released from prison, Charles went to Wellington House Academy where he
Broussard 2 attended school from 1824 to 1827 until his dad was imprisoned again for debt. He
expresses these feelings of despair and loneliness in his novels and short stories. Many of these
pieces, like "Great Expectations" and "Oliver Twist", reference the poor and the oppressed
(Merriman par. 5). Charles Dickens' novel "A Christmas Carol" displays his feelings about being
poor during Christmas time. Charles references Scrooge's nephew as a poor child, and Scrooge asks
his nephew what he has to be merry about when he doesn't have any money (Dickens, "A Christmas
Carol" 4). "The forces that inspired Dickens to create a powerful, impressive and enduring tale were
the profoundly humiliating experiences of his childhood, the plight of the poor, and their children
during the boom decades of the 1830s and 1840s" (A Christmas Carol par. 5). Charles' family grew
up poor and Christmas time is typically not a good time for people who do not have money. Dickens
used his story "A Christmas Carol" to voice his feelings about the poor during Christmas time while
he was growing up ("A Christmas Carol" par. 4). Charles Dickens uses people from his life as
character references for his books. For example, Charles uses his childhood memories of his father
as one of the character references in "A Christmas Carol". "While Dickens'

The Characters Of Ebenezer Scrooge
Most people already have an idea/image for themselves. Many think they are pretty, funny, or even
ugly/rude at times. People have a strange way of thinking about themselves, but so do others in a
third perspective. If someone asked you " what do you think about "blank" ?", the name would make
you feel something. People seem never to have a problem talking about who they know, but what if
that friend... was Ebenezer Scrooge?
Characters from "A Christmas Carol" already know Scrooge. Most of the townspeople hat this
actions, words, and overall through process. While some believe he could've changed his ways (
which he indeed did). Family Matters..
Scrooge's family members truly have faith in him, despite his bitterness. In the story, his nephew
truly thinks Ebenezer will always be bitter during Christmas.Fred ( his nephew) is aware of
Ebenezer's decisions of pushing him away, but he deeply reminds Fred of his mother ( Ebenezer's
sister). Fred fully knows that Scrooge is just angry and nasty with his money filled life.
Fred's wife fully agrees with him, as they kiss and laugh throughout Christmas Eve, toasting to his
health. This shows they don't hate his decisions nor his attitude.
Soon after Scrooge came back to reality, he visits them. His happiness bursts through to door as he
pushes it down, and the family is happy to mingle.

How Does The Author Use Language From Present Scrooge 's...
How does the author use language to present Scrooge 's unpleasant personality? Charles dickens
uses insults to portray Scrooge 's unpleasant personality. This can be alluded from Stave 1 in the
novel where Scrooge can be seen snubbing the charity workers who came seeking for a donation. "If
they would rather die, [...] they had better do it, and decrease the surplus population.", such insult
allows the reader to comprehend that Scrooge is nothing more than a greedy man who solely
believes that the peasants are just money scammers and that they should all be locked up in a
"prison". Today 's audience will see Scrooge this way and agree that he is a misery, bitter old man,
who doesn 't like giving away however back in the 19th century the audience would not be shocked
to see a wealthy man as selfish as Scrooge. It was common in London at the time to see factory
workers exploiting children who worked in hard conditions by hurting them with the most
dangerous work and the cruelest words which is why I can only but say that Scrooge is an
unpleasant, old wretch. Further to this Dickens use of metaphors paints a picture of Scrooge as a
"covetous old sinner!", in Stave 1 the narrator describes Scrooge to be a "tight–fisted hand at the
grindstone". A grindstone is a thick disc of stone used for grinding and it was extremely hard to hold
onto however the narrator uses the adjective tight–fisted to imply Scrooge as adamant and as one
who is able to hold onto the grindstone or in

Scrooge in A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens
The novel, 'A Christmas Carol', is more than just a mere story instead it tries to expose the negative
side of Victorian society and the reason behind this horror, the greed of the wealthy, through the
development of the character Scrooge. All this while attempting to prompt readers with Scrooge's
similar wealth to make a change. As mentioned earlier, the development of Scrooge's character is
vital to this and I will explain how his character develops as the story proceeds and how it is used to
accomplish the aim as mentioned above.
In the first stave, Dickens tries to point out that Scrooge is a character that society considers
negative. In the introduction,
Dickens points ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This haste to put down Scrooge's character was carried out by Dickens to set an impression of
Scrooge as an overall negative character which is supposed to reflect, in exaggeration, the negative
characteristics of the wealthy businessmen in Victorian society. The first stave also tries to pass
Scrooge off as an isolated character, it does this through the use of repetition as the emphasis of
Marley's death is repeated several times in the first stave that even dickens admits this with the
quote 'permit me to repeat, emphatically, that Marley was as dead as a doornail' which basically
means that Dickens is admitting that he has repeated that
Marley is dead, this proves that repletion is used to allow the reader to gain the impression that
Scrooge is an isolated character which.
This isolation is further emphasized when Scrooge described love and
Christmas, both very social occasions, in one statement as 'the only thing in the world more
ridiculous than a merry Christmas', this proves Scrooge's isolation and his anti–social characteristic.
Scrooge is also comes off the first stave as an anti–social and cold character, this is proven because
Scrooge repeatly dismisses his nephew who is trying to make friends with him with the quote 'Good
afternoon' which proves Scrooge's anti–social and cold character. Not only is Scrooge's

Critique of Christmas Time in Charles Dickens' A Christmas Carol
An audience member's gleeful first–hand account of Charles Dickens's public reading of "A
Christmas Carol" unwittingly exposes an often overlooked contradiction in the story's climax:
"Finally, there is Scrooge, no longer a miser, but a human being, screaming at the 'conversational'
boy in Sunday clothes, to buy him the prize turkey 'that never could have stood upon his legs, that
bird'" (96). Perhaps he is no longer a miser but, by this description, Scrooge still plays the role of a
capitalist oppressor, commanding underlings to fetch him luxuries. While Dickens undoubtedly
lauds Scrooge's epiphany and ensuing change, "A Christmas Carol" also hints at the author's ...

For Dickens, the altruism Christmas breeds is a false exercise in guilt–reduction, and the pat ending
of "A Christmas Carol" reinforces this; the satisfaction of listening to a story whose conclusion is
never imperiled (and grows more knowable with each year's retelling) spares the reader the self–
examination Scrooge endures that a darker turn might provoke.
Christmas is only a bright spot if the rest of the year is comparatively dark, and Dickens exposes this
contrast through Scrooge's nephew's optimistic ruminations on
'Christmas timeŠas a good time: a kind, forgiving, charitable, pleasant time: the only time I know of,
in the long calendar of the year, when men and women seem by one consent to open their shut–up
hearts freely, and to think of people below them as if they really were fellow–passengers to the
grave, and not another race of creatures bound on other journeys.' (8–9)
The nephew's breakdown between Christmas, the "only time" of the otherwise "long calendar,"
corresponds to Gérard Genette's terms for the narrative techniques "singulative" and "iterative." The
narrator is not exempt from optimistically meditating on the benevolent singulative at the expense of
the malevolent iterative: "And every man on board, waking or sleeping, good or bad,

Scrooge's Transformation in Dickens' A Christmas Carol Essay
Ebenezer Scrooge is the major character in the story, A Christmas Carol written by Charles Dickens.
A Christmas Carol is about how a "cold–hearted, tight fisted, selfish" money grabbing man is
offered an opportunity of a life time, to change his behaviour, attitude... to have a second chance in
life.
The theme of this novel is to look at the good you do in life and how it carries over after your death.
The moral of the book is; "People can make changes in their lives whenever they really want to,
even right up to the end."

This illustrates the readers what kind of
personality Scrooge has, to me it's like Dickens is describing Scrooge like Jack Frost. He is truly
mean at the beginning but at the conclusion of his experience he changes to a nice man. Although
Dickens describes Scrooge as a mean, rude man, it's like Dickens is teaching us the viewers a lesson
that everyone has a different side of them it just takes hard work to transform them.

People don't actually believe in spiritual animals or different types of spiritual beings, but it's all
about the hype. Charles Dickens has written this book of to a couple of different authors, each
chapter in this novel is actually written by a different author. One author even writes a personally

Dickens would make some readers believe that this is a story about a haunting, yes in reality, but its

The Joy And Revelation Of A Christmas Carol
Imagine a staged production of A Christmas Carol set in 1843. See the stage set in the exact time it
was written by Charles Dickens. The foggy, crowded streets abuzz with carolers and shoppers, the
children staring wide eyed into the shops and bakeries. Hear the bells ringing as a round of "Hark
the Herald Angels Sing" fills the gaslit streets with joy. As a child, going to see A Christmas Carol
was one of my fondest Christmas memories. To witness Scrooge 's' transformation from a mean,
greedy old man to a joyous, loving benefactor always left me smiling and filled me with hope.
Christmas is one of the most magical times of the year, for me, and the many stage and film versions
of Dickens' masterpiece offer many opportunities to experience the joy and revelation of A
Christmas Carol. Pick from Alastair Sims version, Patrick Stewart, Bill Murray's Scrooged, The
Muppets and the 3–D masterpiece with Jim Carrey, just to name a few. It's safe to say it is a very
popular show done an infinite number of different ways. That is why as a director I would create a
contemporary staging of A Christmas Carol in New York City. Now, at first glance this may seem
unoriginal, but for me it is a perfect setting to honor the story in its original form.
In terms of script, the version I would choose, is a translation by David Lawver from 2011

Examples Of Corporate Social Responsibility In A Christmas...
Based on the movie "A Christmas Carol 2009", issue that we found that relevant to the business
ethic is the corporate social irresponsibility (CSI). Corporate social irresponsibility (CSI) refers to
the dark side, as it investigates the wrongful and damaging business decisions that managers might
take. Corporate social irresponsibility to concepts such as corporate culpability and undesirability
and irresponsibility, in its various forms such as corruption, bribery, environmental degradation, and
social injustice, is most frequently found in poorer regions, those with fewer social resources or
educational opportunities (Sanchez‐Runde et al., 2013, p. 690). Because of corporate social
irresponsibility, the business performance decline, customer dissatisfaction and low profitability will
be happen. In the beginning, we found that the unethical issue is that the ignorance of legal
responsibilities. This mean that the business ignore the laws and regulations that all firms that are
expected to abide by as they perform their daily functions. In the movie, Ebenezer Scrooge as a
founder and employer of his business named "SCROOGE & MARLEY" abuse and do not follow
the laws and regulations in the city. The ignorance issues is that workplace uncomfortable,
underpaid salary, long working hours and annual leave issue.

The Miserable And Wretched Creatures Of Mary Shelley 's...
Many authors during the early nineteenth century wrote about the horrible working conditions that
existed during the Industrialization movement in early nineteenth century Europe. Some wrote
directly toward this issue, like Karl Marx in the "Communist Manifesto," but others decided voice
their opinions through the characters of their literary works. The miserable and wretched creatures
of Mary Shelley's "Frankenstein" and Charles Dickens's "A Christmas Carol" are all products of the
same social and cultural forces, however one is more noticeably linked to these issues while the
other is more abstract. The two child–like spirits, Ignorance and Want, serve as warnings to Scrooge
that society will be littered with people ignorant and wanting ... Show more content on

This is emphasized even more when the spirit says to "Beware [the] boy; for on his brow I see that
written which Doom, unless the writing be erased." The two children not only represent the
overarching problems that come with having the bourgeoisie reign, but what will later occur if this
reign continues to develop further. While the two spirits appear to be small children now, if given
the chance to grow and become identical to their fathers, they will us their ignorance and want to
worsen the future of society. The "Doom" written on Ignorance's face is the doom of society if the
bourgeoisie continue to control more of it. Right now the bourgeoisie might just be a small issue, but
if the issue continues to grow larger in size, just like the two children, everyone will be filled with
the same ignorance and wants and thus society will be just as wretched as these two spirits. Dickens
warns his readers to not produce those similar to Ignorance and Want, but rather to be more
charitable and giving toward those like them instead.

Scrooge in A Christmas Carol
Call for Change: Dickens' Attempt to Improve Society, and Walt Disney's Subversion Thereof
In a time in which the significance of Christmas gradually started to change, Charles Dickens, in
accordance with these changes, wrote a Christmas tale: A Christmas Carol. The novella was
published six days in advance of the Christmas celebrations of 1843; it was sold out three days later.
Although a socially engaged narrative, Dickens' work is not occupied with trivialities such as the
introduction of Christmas cards; instead A Christmas Carol focuses on the transforming beliefs and
values within society and endeavours to contribute to these changes. A hundred and forty years later,
the story was (once again) retold: The Disney film ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In line with this change, Dickens' contemporary George Eliot (Mary Ann Evans) marked "the ideal
of goodness entirely human" (Jenkins 143). In The Scriptures of Charles Dickens, Vincent Newey
states that A Christmas Carol shows its readers a world in which the religious motive for celebrating
Christmas has started to attenuate and a humanist motive to augment; evidence for this assumption
is found in the first stave of the novella in the speech of Scrooge's nephew:
But I am sure I have always thought of Christmas time, when it has come round – apart from the
veneration due to its sacred name and origin, if anything belonging to it can be apart from that – as a
good time: a kind, forgiving, charitable, pleasant time: the only time I know of . . . when men and
women seem . . . to think of people below them. (5)
Apart from this seemingly irrefutable evidence for Newey's assumption, the novel demonstrates the
increasing importance of Humanism in yet another way: Whereas Robinson Crusoe in the namesake
novel by Daniel Defoe (written in 1719) still relied on a "call from heaven" to motivate change, the
characters from A Christmas Carol do not (150). Instead, the Spirits show Scrooge "the horrors of
self–exclusion and non–participation, hearth and home . . . put on a lively display" (Newey

Essay On The Personality Of Scrooge

  • 1. Essay on The Personality of Scrooge Ebenezer Scrooge is the major character in the story, A Christmas Carol written by Charles Dickens. A Christmas Carol is about how a "cold–hearted, tight fisted, selfish" money grabbing man is offered an opportunity of a life time, to change his behaviour, attitude... to have a second chance in life. The theme of this novella is to look at the good you do in life and how it carries over after your death. The moral of the book is; "People can make changes in their lives whenever they really want to, even right up to the end." In this essay I am going to distinguish the personality of Scrooge also show you how he was at the beginning of the novella in the 1st Stave to how he changes at the end in the 5th Stave. The title to the novella ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Also, Dickens describes Ebenezer Scrooge as a 'cold–hearted, tight fisted, selfish man' who despises Christmas and all things that incite happiness. In addition, the words have a rhythm, they all have three syllables. The title of this book is A Christmas Carol. A Carol is a hymn, the three descriptive words is representing a carol so this refers back to the title. A quote from the book is 'The cold within him froze his old features, nipped his pointed nose, made his eyes red'. Dickens portrays Scrooge's characteristics like the wintry weather conditions. This illustrates the readers what kind of personality Scrooge has, to me it's like Dickens is describing Scrooge like Jack Frost (from the Santa Claus 3 film). He is truly mean at the beginning but at the conclusion of his experience he changes to a nice man. Although Dickens describes Scrooge as a mean, rude man, it's like Dickens is teaching us the viewers a lesson that everyone has a different side of them it just takes hard work to transform them. 'Squeezing, wrenching, grasping, scraping, clutching' these words portray Scrooge and how he acts upon things and how his actions and behaviour effects people around him. The repeating, rhythmic hard consonant sounds which have a negative effect on Scrooge shows the readers that he is a vile, wealthy man. Also the words are really strong it's like a claw, he has clutched on a bad, mean area of life and he can't let go and until he lets go he is going to stay ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The ghosts will give Scrooge an opportunity to reform himself. The text explicitly states that Scrooge was a tight fisted hand at the grindstone. Moreover, he was a squeezing, wrenching, grasping, scraping, clutching, covetous, matured sinner! Accordingly, his self–contained personality made him solitary as an oyster. In the text, it states, that Scrooge did not want to donate money to the poor since he could better use the money for himself. Scrooge declined to even to let his clerk have a day off for Christmas! There youngest child is very sick, he has to use a crutch, but he is very brave and open about his sickness and says it is a visual reminder about how Christ healed the lame and made the blind men examen again. Scrooge wakes up to a ghost, ready to take Scrooge places to try to change his attitude. Scrooge encountered the spirit yet to come. The first stop they make in the night was in the city to examine some businessman talking about someone dead, but they laugh and wonder if people are actually going to go to his funeral. There second stop they make is to examine more businessmen, but they care even less. The third stop they make is to the shady side of town to a rag and bone merchant that will sale Scrooge's belongings. The only people who have feelings about him dying was the feeling of happiness. • 5. What Is Charles Dickens Moral Message and How Does He... Christmas Carol What is Charles Dickens moral message and how does he communicate it to the reader in "A Christmas Carol"? Christmas carol is a novel written by Charles Dickens (1812–1870) during the Victorian times in London. For me to explore the moral messages I feel it is important to acknowledge exactly what the message is. Charles Dickens throughout the novel communicates; Charity, goodwill, family, kindliness and humility as moral messages, however, I personally feel Charles Dickens most powerful and important messages are Goodwill, Family and Charity however I will still look at all moral messages as they all play an important role in A Christmas Carol. In the book Christmas, stave 2, the ghost of Christmas past takes scrooge ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... From this reply Scrooge is reminded from his words in Stave 1; " if he be like to die he had better do it and decrease the surplus population." Scrooge is humbled by the Cratchitt's gratitude over what little they have and he learns that as long as you have family you don't need money. Lastly, family is a moral message to which dickens tries to communicate with the reader and this is shown in stave 3. The ghost takes Scrooge to places outside of the London area he sees a family of miners in a hut on a barren moor, two lighthouse keepers and sailors on a ship; and they all know they have got each other but no matter what they will celebrate as much as they want, even though there not with their family they have their friends. This all made them aware to act more kindly to one another as its Christmas. Fred – Scrooge's nephew is having a Christmas party and Scrooge is taken and shown by the sprit. Fred explains that Scrooge is to be pitied, not despised. And his money does him no good; Fred then explains, ""his offences carry their own punishment". The guesses of the party then play a game to find the identity of a thing to which questions asked can only be answered to Yes or No. The guests are then amused by the fact when Fred wife sister guesses that the mystery object is Scrooge. • 7. Symbolism In Jacob Carol "Marley was dead, to begin with – there's no doubt whatever about that... Old Marley was as dead as a door–nail."(Stave 1, Pg. 9) A Christmas Carol's character Jacob Marley plays an important role in the main character, Ebenezer Scrooge's growth. In the novel, Mr. Marley, when he appears as a spirit to inform Scrooge that the christmas spirits would be visiting him, he appears in chains along with cash boxes, deeds, keys, padlocks, and ledgers. It is said in the book that he chose to wear the chain as well as the other objects voluntarily. However, the reason for Marley's doing so in his afterlife was never revealed. I believe that the symbolic meaning behind Marley's locks and chains have to do with his wealth, him being tied to his job, and his greed during his lifetime. I feel that this symbolism also played a large part in Scrooge's growth throughout the novel because it further drilled the idea into his head that if he doesn't change his attitude toward life he'd end up chained down just as Marley is. It seems as if he chooses to wear the chain freely, but he is never truly free of his own sin and regret. The chains and objects symbolize his wealth because when he was alive, Marley worked in a counting house. In modern terms a counting house would be like a loan office, but increased interest was charged to loan clients money. He and Scrooge seemed like similar people, and if this was the case, he may have gained wealth in life just as Scrooge did; by working ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The Divided Classes Throughout the Industrial Revolution, the lower class's population continued to increase as more and more people became poor and fell into poverty. Although the upper class was prosperous and wealthy, they failed to assist the struggling population; this only made the problem worse. As the issue of poverty became more critical, it became a topic that authors commonly wrote about. George Orwell, Charles Dickens, and Jonathan Swift were authors who presented the problem of a poor community and a neglectful upper class to the people through the use of allegory and satire. This helped to easily convince and influence their readers. Through the use of satire and allegory, George Orwell, Charles Dickens, and Jonathan Swift effectively address the pressing issue of the upper class's ignorance and mistreatment towards the lower, struggling class. George Orwell expresses satire and allegory throughout Animal Farm by representing events that unfolded in the book to events that occurred in real life, and characters in his novella to historical figures. During the Russian Revolution and the reign of Joseph Stalin, the lower class of the population struggled severely under harsh conditions, including being underfed and overworked. The upper class ruled the majority of the population whilst living in comfort and enjoying luxuries such as plentiful food and proper clothing for the cold. The author conveys the hardships of the poor and the comfort of the upper class ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 11. How Does Donald Duck Lose Your Personality Have you ever watched a cartoon or a show or even a movie and you see yourself in or through that character ? I recently found myself watching the movie Aladdin with my little cousin. I saw how Jasmine stood up for the poor kids in the village and also how she spoke her mind to her dad about who she had to marry. I saw how we connected in some way and how I am a lot like her. There are other characters who I am also like in other ways. The three fictional characters that most represent my personality are Donald Duck for his short temper, Bubbles from The Powerpuff Girls for her sweetness, and Jasmine from Aladdin for her way of standing up for what's right and speaking her mind no matter who she is against. Although Donald is a duck and a guy, we do have the common aspect of losing our temper after being pushed to a certain point. In an episode on TV called Donald Duck cured duck, Donald Duck loses his temper because he can't open the window and he starts breaking plates and he even breaks through walls. Daisy Duck then tells him she won't go out on a date with him until he cures his temper. Donald Ducks temper makes his friends not want to be around him. Although his friends tend to have patience for him, in this episode Daisy Duck didn't and she refused to go out with him because of his moodiness. Since Donald is very caring and doesn't want to lose his friends he does what he can to keep his temper under control. Like Donald Duck, I do control my temper, but after being pushed too far I tend to lose it. Although I do have a lot of patience, when I do get pushed over the edge, I often get very moody. Usually when this happens my family tries to leave me alone until I can calm down on my own. For example, one day my parents and siblings had gone out to the store with my dad's side of the family. That day I wasn't feeling very good so I was allowed to stay at home, but since I am the only one that is good with children, they left all of their kids for me to take care of. I ended up having to take care of four three year olds, two five year olds, and two six month old babies. After a couple of hours I felt overwhelmed and all the kids were driving me crazy so, I called my parents screaming and yelling at them ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 13. Research Paper On A Nightmare Before Christmas A Nightmare Before Christmas Is it More About Halloween or Christmas? "Just because I cannot see it, doesn't mean I can't believe it."–Jack Skellington. In this quote, Jack Skellington from A Nightmare Before Christmas is talking about Christmas. Some people think that A Nightmare Before Christmas is a Halloween movie, but others argue that it is a Christmas movie. However, I think that A Nightmare Before Christmas is a Christmas movie because it is mainly about learning about Christmas. My first reason for thinking this way is because most of the songs are about Christmas. For example, the songs include : "What's This?", "Town Meeting Song", "Jack's Obsession", "Kidnap The Sandy Clause", and "Making Christmas" are all songs about Christmas. "What's This?" Introduces Christmas and shows joy, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... "Jack's Obsession" is about how Jack obsesses with Christmas and how to make it work in Halloween Town. "Kidnap The Sandy Clause" is about Lock, Shock, and Barrel, Oogie Boogie's henchmen, ( Oogie Boogie will be mentioned later ) getting orders from Jack to kidnap Santa Clause. My final piece of evidence for this reason is "Making Christmas". "Making Christmas" is about making Halloween Town like Christmas. Again, this is my first reason because most of the songs are about Christmas. My next reason is because Jack saves Santa Clause ( Sandy Clause) from Oogie Boogie and saves Christmas. Even though Jack wouldn't have to save Santa or Christmas if the didn't order his kidnap and interfere with the holiday, it is still important. Since Jack saves Santa from Oogie Boogie, it allows Santa to set everything right in Christmas town with his joy and delivers the correct presents to the correct children. If it wasn't for Jack, Christmas would have been ruined and their would be a lot of sad kids and unhappy parents. Again, this is my second reason because Jack saves Santa Clause and ... • 15. How and Why Does Dickens Present the Change in Scrooge in... 'A Christmas Carol' covers a period of 24 hours from Christmas Eve to Christmas Day. It is a simple morality tale of the radical change in the character Ebenezer Scrooge from being bitter, ironfisted and miserable to becoming a new, openhearted and charitable man. The book was first published in 1843, a time when many of the wealthy people neglected the old Christmas spirit of charity. In addition, the Industrial Revolution had further done away with the simple pleasures of the season. Dickens' intentions in writing 'A Christmas Carol' were not only linked to his childhood and sympathy for the poor, but he was also acting as a philanthropist by making an appeal to the rich people of society to mend their selfish ways. Dickens is able to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Dickens uses the supernatural as a method of holding a mirror up to Scrooge who is forced to confront the error of his ways. Dickens shows us that if Scrooge fails to do this it will result in him having a similar fate to Marley. Dickens uses the ghost to emphasize that there is a chance of redemption for Scrooge "that you have yet a chance and hope of escaping my fate". Dickens' use of the supernatural continues throughout the story as a means of arousing nostalgia, thought, fear and action by Scrooge. All of these emotions, which Dickens shows us Scrooge is feeling, demonstrate the gradual change in Scrooge throughout the book, and as these changes take place, our thoughts and feelings towards the relationship we have with Scrooge also changes; we begin to understand him and see under his hard outer shell. Through the visitations of the three spirits, Dickens reveals feelings in Scrooge that have been repressed, which facilitates Scrooge's change. The ghost of Marley warns Scrooge "You will be haunted by Three Spirits" The spirits are used by Dickens to take Scrooge through a journey of self– discovery and ultimately transformation. Difference Between A Chmas Carmas And The Christmas Although it isn't hard to believe that people do not realize that there are difference between the book and the movie, in this case, that fits right into that subject. Here are some of the difference between the movie and the novel. One difference in the movie was that the Ghost of Christmas yet to come has a hand of skin. not a hand without skin that was written in the book. I think that this makes a difference because it doesn't show a big impact on the story. I think Charles Dickens put the skinless hand in his story to give his story a "chill factor". I don't think the director of the movie version of A Christmas carol thought that it was a big deal or a big impact on the rest of the story. Another difference between the book and movie is that Scrooge doesn't go to church at the end of the story. I think it make a big difference, though because it shows how much Scrooge has changed since the three spirits came to visit him. It shows a before and after t effect that made a big impact on the rest of the story. Another difference between the book and movie is that Scrooge doesn't go to church at the end of the story. • 19. Poverty In George Orwell, Jonathan Swift, And Charles Dickens Poverty is known across the United States and also the world. It is when a family or just one person is below the yearly salary marked as poverty. Many people try to help those who are in need like homeless shelters, people that give money to beggars, and authors. Authors inform their audiences about this serious topic and get the upper classes to help instead of using them for a workforce with low salary. They do this with satire and allegory to grab the audience's attention. George Orwell, Jonathan Swift, and Charles Dickens utilize satire and/or allegory in their works to alter those in power view of the lower class of society. George Orwell uses satire and allegory in his novel Animal Farm to inform his audience about the lower classes and how they suffer to poverty. The animals on the farm tried and somewhat succeeded to make a socialism farm. Later in the book, it shows that the pigs (smartest on the farm) start to get more benefits than any other working class poor animal. This leads to purges, Snowball (a fair leader) getting exiled, and low intake on food for the animals. Animal Farm uses satire and allegory in this work by having this ridiculous farm run by animals, but have it connected to a serious topic like the upper class and how they treat the lower classes. "My purpose was, in a whimsical kind of masque which the good humour of the season justified, to awaken some loving and forbearing thoughts, never out of season in a Christian land" (Dickens Preface). Dickens wanted to convey a theme of the Christmas Spirit in A Christmas Carol and it shined through in Christmas Cupid. Ebenezer Scrooge represents the Victorian rich who treat those below them poorly and only care for their own well–being. He is a man who cares only for money because of the neglect he received, as boy from both is peers and father. The Ghost of Christmas Yet to Come shows up in two completely different ways. Scrooge's Ghost is depicted as a "solemn Phantom, draped and hooded, coming, like a mist along the ground, towards him" (Dickens 71). Whereas Sloane's shows up dressed as Santa Clause. Scrooge is shown the death of a man and how people are rejoicing it and he is shown the death of Tiny Tim, Bob Cratchit's crippled son. The Phantom shows Scrooge a tombstone with his name on it. The death of the man everyone was rejoicing was his. Scrooge realizes the consequences of his actions and learns that he must change his ways and does so. He makes sure he fixes his ways by sending a turkey to Cratchit's house, donating a large sum to a man that had previously asked for one. He even gives Cratchit a raise the next day. Sloane realizes that she will end up completely alone if she doesn't change her ways. She goes to her mother's house and reconciles with and then takes her to her friend Jenny's for Christmas dinner. • 23. A Christmas Carol : A Ghost Story Of Christmas The strengths for the play A Christmas Carol: A Ghost Story of Christmas were strong because the play was amazing! I have never seen the movie, but the play flowed well and explained it for people who have never watched the movie. I read over a summary of the movie and the script followed it exactly. I have seen a lot of plays and this play to me did not have many weaknesses. A weakness I did notice was some scenes lasted too long and could have been cut shorter. For example, the village dancing scene and the dancing scene during the Ghost of Christmas Past could have been cut short. This was the first play I have been to where they did not black out the stage to move from scene to scene. I sometimes got distracted when props and scenery was moving off and on stage. The way the ghost ensemble walked from the back to the front slowly made it feel creepier and added more effect to the play. Ebeneezer Scrooge played by John Brocato was just amazing. His acting definitely made the play. John Brocato was meant to be Scrooge. I think the director saw how well he could act and change his emotion. The way he portrayed Scrooge is the way I would imagine it in a movie. He played a great grumpy old man that eventually falls in love with Christmas. Ghost of Christmas Present/Fruit Vendor played by Joe Evans was my second favorite. I think the director saw how jolly and happy he could act. Dickens' Use of the Supernatural in A Christmas Carol A Christmas Carol is built upon numerous contrasts: rich and poor, family and loneliness, generosity and miserliness, affection and cruelty, past, present and future. Most of these contrasting forces are brought to light within the character of Scrooge himself. The compulsive, lonely, miserly man, who eats his abstemious meals in the shadows, emerges from his cold–heartedness into a generous, fun loving, warm and caring man. Dickens uses a lot of rich contrasting imagery within the character Scrooge to prepare the reader for his conversion well before the concluding chapter. These children are grimy and thin, the kind of children Scrooge would walk past on the street without a second thought. They are shown to him in such an appalling manor that Scrooge begs to help them, "have they no refuge or resource?" and he is reminded of the coldness of his words earlier in the story. They are shown to him I believe because, like he would be after his death, he is powerless to help them and this causes outstanding amounts of guilt to whelm up within Scrooge. I also believe the twins had another message, though this time not for Scrooge. Dickens wanted to make all the readers of A Christmas Carol, the warm and tender Christmas novella, aware of the fact that it was based on the poor and starving, Dickens wanted to warm the heart of the public but also get them to reach out to the young and starving children on London's street, which like Scrooge they just walk past every day. Dickens shows his popularity by showing us his relationships with people in his surroundings. We can tell scrooge is unpopular as the narrator portrays him as a "Tight fisted hand at the grindstone." Scrooges name give us a similarity between the word scrounge what is to be tight with money and every opportunity to make money, this automatically helps us launch an understanding that he is tight with his money, what is necessary to associate him as nasty old man. • 33. Scrooge Symbolism Based on what I read Scrooge is a grumpy person with no feeling for the people around him. Dickens doesn't like this and says it is a big no–no is his world. Scrooge spends money on only what he needs to get by. He doesn't get why Christmas is such a big deal, even though everyone else is celebrating it with cheer. In fact, he hates the Christmas cheer and expresses his feelings. He despises poor people and say that they should go to jail. He does not have any joy, but he's not depressed. Scrooge almost wants to damage people's day and does it often. The text says he is a hard worker as it states "he was a tight–fisted hand at the grind–stone, Scrooge! A squeezing, wrenching, grasping, scraping, clutching, covetous, old sinner!" He can also really stand the elements, the cold., the hot, the rain, the snow, the... anything. Not only can he withstand the elements, but based on the information from the text I inferred that he is the elements, resilient and unforgiving. The text explicitly states that the Spirit is the "Ghost of Christmas Past" (Scrooge's past), even the spirit quotes "I am the Ghost of Christmas Past" in it conversation with Scrooge. First they went to Scrooge's depressed and disheartened childhood. Immediately after seeing himself, he sobs with bad memories. Scrooge says "I wish"... • 35. A Christmas Carol Analysis Live without Regret "The magic of Christmas is not in the presents but in His presence"– Unknown. The story A Christmas Carol is the story of an elderly man named Ebenezer Scrooge. The story takes place in London, England in 1843, in the beginning of the story Mr.Scrooge is a grumpy old man until three spirits visit him. Throughout the story Scrooge changed his outlook on life, he gained sympathy and he became more giving. In this essay I will be talking about how Scrooge's attitude changes throughout the story, how the spirits made him feel guilty through the feeling of sympathy and how he became more charitable. Throughout the story Scrooge's attitude changes. He starts off the story being a grumpy old man that not many people like. He yells at them and is disrespectful. Some examples of this are, he doesn't accept his nephew's invitation for supper, and he wants to cut Mr. Cratchit's salary since he is going to miss a day for Christmas. However after the spirits visit him, he starts to feel regret. For instance, while the spirits were showing him memories, he was feeling sorry for his past actions, he didn't want to watch them and was afraid of what was to come. Towards the end of the story he becomes happier. He feels bad for what he has done to the people around him in the past. For this reason he buys the Cratchit's a big turkey since he has overworked and underpaid Bob Cratchit. In summary, at the beginning of the story Scrooge is an angry grumpy old man but after the spirits visit him he realizes that he should be happier and nicer to people or he will die alone. During the story while the spirits are visiting Scrooge he starts to feel guilty. They make him feel guilty by showing him his past memories. The spirit of Christmas past showed Scrooge the memories of when he lost the love of his life because he was being too greedy and too focused on his business. The spirit of Christmas Present showed him what is currently happening at the Cratchit house. It is almost Christmas in 1946 and all the parents are buying presents for their children and spending a great deal of money. This article speaks to the parents to spend quality time with their children, as opposed to just buying them gifts. The article is trying to persuade the reader that tangible gifts are not what make a child happy. The author's idea about the family is that they should be together reading stories and singing Christmas carols; and that will create happiness for the family. It also talks about getting children presents, and how adults get offended when children do not pay attention to certain toys, or they break something immediately. It seems that adults forget that infants and young children do not know the concept of value yet. Everything in their playing field is equal to them and creates just the same amount of fun. And adults need to keep that in mind when buying presents for their children. The assumption this article has is that parents will have the time to spend with their children doing arts and crafts and being able to sit around and listen to Charles Dickens A Christmas Carol. Shekelhound was correct as Scrooge maneuvered his way to the top of the heap laying waste to the corporate lawyer and many who had been with the company for decades. Even with a great attitude, it was difficult for the hotel executives to discuss with ownership anything, which did not relate to a return on investment. Japes forged the best relationship he could with a boss who was three thousand miles away and rarely visited the property. How do you quantify the attitude and feelings of hundreds of servers who barely scrape enough money together to pay their bills to bean counters who only relate to numbers? Even Shekelhound who was a bean counter himself would visit with and get to know the operational servers. The hotel was forced to cut back on any event that would cost money and not give a direct return. This included limiting the employee luncheons to once per quarter and the annual holiday party expenditure to less than two thousand dollars. The owners would also put on a wage freeze for nearly two years while escalating the server's expense for health care and other basic needs. • 47. Charles Dickens ' A Christmas Carol It can be easily depicted that Christmas is a time of the year to share joyfulness. In Charles Dickens' A Christmas Carol, Ebenezer Scrooge is a character that is effortlessly described as a hardheaded cold man. It is simple to judge the character of Scrooge in this manner, but it is important to recognize the change in his personality throughout the story. Scrooge's transformation happens very quickly, but he becomes generous and caring only when he is forced to see himself through a stranger's eyes. By the visitations of three spirits, Scrooge realizes the harsh and ungenerous man that he is. The Ghost of Christmas Past shows Scrooge the pitiable child he was, and the Ghost of Christmas Yet to Come, shows Scrooge as a neglected corpse. These two images have a significant impact on Scrooge and his development as a character as he reacts to these in a regretful manner. As the story begins, Scrooge is a grumpy old man who wants nothing to do with the people around him as he sends off a caroler one night and pays no attention to homeless children. When being visited by the Ghost of Christmas Past, Scrooge is taken back to many different events in time, but one in particular has a greater effect on him. Scrooge is taken to the neighborhood where he was raised, and comes across the boarding school he attended. He sees the schoolboys running merrily out of the school to leave for Christmas break, but realizes that the school is not yet deserted, but a young boy remains reading ... • 49. A Christmas Carol Analysis "Bah, Humbug" an iconic line from a story we all know and love, said by a character that was made for us to hate. Charles Dickens published A Christmas Carol in 1843, in part as an attempt to garner some success, and also as an attempt to convince the masses of kindness and charity at Christmas time. While it did not gain him commercial success, the legacy this story has left, succeeded in inspiring our society to give a little more at Christmas time. Nowadays, the story has become synonymous with Christmas. It would be hard to imagine a Christmas without some adaptation of Dickens masterpiece. As A Christmas Carol is one of the most adapted Literary sources, it is no surprise that Dr. Who would take a crack at it. The episode "The Unquiet Undead" aired in 2005, and takes place during the time of Dickens, and while it is not a direct adaptation of A Christmas Carol. it's many allusions, and similar story structure, make it an apt analogy for it. Of course, revision is Dr. Who's game, so the alien ghosts, and reanimated corpses are not a surprise either. According to Leitch, a story that is not a direct adaptation of a source, but instead an analogy to the story by way of invoking the characters and/or style of the author or developing their story in a way feels inspired by the source, is an analogue (Leitch, Pg. 113). "Unquiet Undead" is in spirit, inspired by A Christmas Carol, even though the story is not a direct adaptation. The episode takes place in Dickens' time, around the end of his life, at Christmas time, and we know this because Dickens is a character in the episode. The story is that alien ghosts from the future are haunting a mortuary as gas, and possessing dead bodies in order to live again. So, not quite A Christmas Carol, but it does have some parallels. Most of which come in the form of Dickens' character. He takes the place of the Scrooge character, and while he is not greedy like Scrooge, he is grumpy, and lacks belief in the impossible. Also, like Scrooge, he has become estranged from his family. The conversion that would take place in Scrooge, from greed to kindness, becomes a conversion from a grumpy cynic, to an ecstatic believer, that has been inspired anew. He also decides that he ... A Christmas carol by Charles Dickens is a significant novella written in the Victorian era. The protagonist Ebenezer Scrooge is used to demonstrate the upper class society and their attitude towards the poor. Throughout this redemption story, Dickens combines a descriptions of hardships faced by the poor with a heart–felt sentimental celebration of the Christmas season. The novella contains a dramatic and comic element as well as a deep felt moral theme. The text promotes the values of Ebenezer Scrooge, delving into his past, present and supposed future as well as contrasting between the enriching and depressing story; specifically ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The author illustrates that Scrooge who is depicted as "hard and sharp as a flint" is a greedy miser whom is so old and coldhearted that nothing other than his profits will phase him. Dickens uses the scene when the ghost of Christmas past, "a child–like old man" uses flashbacks to show Scrooge of the memories he once made to show the nature of the much younger character. This is evident when Fan "a little girl much younger than Scrooge" had brought out the affection of her older brother as they planned "to be together all the Christmas long, and have the merriest time in all the world." What is important about this example is not just that it shows the compassion Scrooge once felt but also that Scrooge is not truly crooked and horrible to the core establishing the uplifting and inspiring feeling to readers. The title of the novella, A Christmas Carol, is immediately recognized by the reader as hardly appropriate for the first stave. Stave one does not resemble the happy and cheerful world of Christmas trees and presents, but instead the reader is exposed to, what can only be described as, 'ghost story' features. When his father was released from prison, Charles went to Wellington House Academy where he Broussard 2 attended school from 1824 to 1827 until his dad was imprisoned again for debt. He expresses these feelings of despair and loneliness in his novels and short stories. Many of these pieces, like "Great Expectations" and "Oliver Twist", reference the poor and the oppressed (Merriman par. 5). Charles Dickens' novel "A Christmas Carol" displays his feelings about being poor during Christmas time. Charles references Scrooge's nephew as a poor child, and Scrooge asks his nephew what he has to be merry about when he doesn't have any money (Dickens, "A Christmas Carol" 4). "The forces that inspired Dickens to create a powerful, impressive and enduring tale were the profoundly humiliating experiences of his childhood, the plight of the poor, and their children during the boom decades of the 1830s and 1840s" (A Christmas Carol par. 5). Charles' family grew up poor and Christmas time is typically not a good time for people who do not have money. Dickens used his story "A Christmas Carol" to voice his feelings about the poor during Christmas time while he was growing up ("A Christmas Carol" par. 4). • 57. How Does The Author Use Language From Present Scrooge 's... How does the author use language to present Scrooge 's unpleasant personality? Charles dickens uses insults to portray Scrooge 's unpleasant personality. This can be alluded from Stave 1 in the novel where Scrooge can be seen snubbing the charity workers who came seeking for a donation. "If they would rather die, [...] they had better do it, and decrease the surplus population.", such insult allows the reader to comprehend that Scrooge is nothing more than a greedy man who solely believes that the peasants are just money scammers and that they should all be locked up in a "prison". Today 's audience will see Scrooge this way and agree that he is a misery, bitter old man, who doesn 't like giving away however back in the 19th century the audience would not be shocked to see a wealthy man as selfish as Scrooge. It was common in London at the time to see factory workers exploiting children who worked in hard conditions by hurting them with the most dangerous work and the cruelest words which is why I can only but say that Scrooge is an unpleasant, old wretch. Further to this Dickens use of metaphors paints a picture of Scrooge as a "covetous old sinner!", in Stave 1 the narrator describes Scrooge to be a "tight–fisted hand at the grindstone". A grindstone is a thick disc of stone used for grinding and it was extremely hard to hold onto however the narrator uses the adjective tight–fisted to imply Scrooge as adamant and as one who is able to hold onto the grindstone or in ... Scrooge in A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens The novel, 'A Christmas Carol', is more than just a mere story instead it tries to expose the negative side of Victorian society and the reason behind this horror, the greed of the wealthy, through the development of the character Scrooge. All this while attempting to prompt readers with Scrooge's similar wealth to make a change. As mentioned earlier, the development of Scrooge's character is vital to this and I will explain how his character develops as the story proceeds and how it is used to accomplish the aim as mentioned above. In the first stave, Dickens tries to point out that Scrooge is a character that society considers negative. In the introduction, Dickens points ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This haste to put down Scrooge's character was carried out by Dickens to set an impression of Scrooge as an overall negative character which is supposed to reflect, in exaggeration, the negative characteristics of the wealthy businessmen in Victorian society. The first stave also tries to pass Scrooge off as an isolated character, it does this through the use of repetition as the emphasis of Marley's death is repeated several times in the first stave that even dickens admits this with the quote 'permit me to repeat, emphatically, that Marley was as dead as a doornail' which basically means that Dickens is admitting that he has repeated that Marley is dead, this proves that repletion is used to allow the reader to gain the impression that Scrooge is an isolated character which. This isolation is further emphasized when Scrooge described love and Christmas, both very social occasions, in one statement as 'the only thing in the world more ridiculous than a merry Christmas', this proves Scrooge's isolation and his anti–social characteristic. Scrooge is also comes off the first stave as an anti–social and cold character, this is proven because Scrooge repeatly dismisses his nephew who is trying to make friends with him with the quote 'Good afternoon' which proves Scrooge's anti–social and cold character. Critique of Christmas Time in Charles Dickens' A Christmas Carol An audience member's gleeful first–hand account of Charles Dickens's public reading of "A Christmas Carol" unwittingly exposes an often overlooked contradiction in the story's climax: "Finally, there is Scrooge, no longer a miser, but a human being, screaming at the 'conversational' boy in Sunday clothes, to buy him the prize turkey 'that never could have stood upon his legs, that bird'" (96). Perhaps he is no longer a miser but, by this description, Scrooge still plays the role of a capitalist oppressor, commanding underlings to fetch him luxuries. While Dickens undoubtedly lauds Scrooge's epiphany and ensuing change, "A Christmas Carol" also hints at the author's ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... For Dickens, the altruism Christmas breeds is a false exercise in guilt–reduction, and the pat ending of "A Christmas Carol" reinforces this; the satisfaction of listening to a story whose conclusion is never imperiled (and grows more knowable with each year's retelling) spares the reader the self– examination Scrooge endures that a darker turn might provoke. Christmas is only a bright spot if the rest of the year is comparatively dark, and Dickens exposes this contrast through Scrooge's nephew's optimistic ruminations on 'Christmas timeŠas a good time: a kind, forgiving, charitable, pleasant time: the only time I know of, in the long calendar of the year, when men and women seem by one consent to open their shut–up hearts freely, and to think of people below them as if they really were fellow–passengers to the grave, and not another race of creatures bound on other journeys.' (8–9) The nephew's breakdown between Christmas, the "only time" of the otherwise "long calendar," corresponds to Gérard Genette's terms for the narrative techniques "singulative" and "iterative." The narrator is not exempt from optimistically meditating on the benevolent singulative at the expense of the malevolent iterative: "And every man on board, waking or sleeping, good or bad, ... A quote from the book is 'The cold within him froze his old features, nipped his pointed nose, made his eyes red'. Dickens portrays Scrooge's characteristics like the wintry weather conditions. This illustrates the readers what kind of personality Scrooge has, to me it's like Dickens is describing Scrooge like Jack Frost. • 77. Scrooge in A Christmas Carol Call for Change: Dickens' Attempt to Improve Society, and Walt Disney's Subversion Thereof In a time in which the significance of Christmas gradually started to change, Charles Dickens, in accordance with these changes, wrote a Christmas tale: A Christmas Carol. The novella was published six days in advance of the Christmas celebrations of 1843; it was sold out three days later. Although a socially engaged narrative, Dickens' work is not occupied with trivialities such as the introduction of Christmas cards; instead A Christmas Carol focuses on the transforming beliefs and values within society and endeavours to contribute to these changes. In line with this change, Dickens' contemporary George Eliot (Mary Ann Evans) marked "the ideal of goodness entirely human" (Jenkins 143). In The Scriptures of Charles Dickens, Vincent Newey states that A Christmas Carol shows its readers a world in which the religious motive for celebrating Christmas has started to attenuate and a humanist motive to augment; evidence for this assumption is found in the first stave of the novella in the speech of Scrooge's nephew: But I am sure I have always thought of Christmas time, when it has come round – apart from the veneration due to its sacred name and origin, if anything belonging to it can be apart from that – as a good time: a kind, forgiving, charitable, pleasant time: the only time I know of . . . when men and women seem . . . to think of people below them. (5) Apart from this seemingly irrefutable evidence for Newey's assumption, the novel demonstrates the increasing importance of Humanism in yet another way: Whereas Robinson Crusoe in the namesake novel by Daniel Defoe (written in 1719) still relied on a "call from heaven" to motivate change, the characters from A Christmas Carol do not (150).
