The Five Precepts in the Context of The Eightfold Path Essay
The Five Precepts in the Context of The Eightfold Path Both 'The Five Precepts' and 'The Eightfold
Path' are significant elements of the Buddhist religion. The precepts act as a guide for the average
everyday lay Buddhist on how to create the least amount of karmic energy possible. It by no means
is the way directly to reaching Nirvana. The Eightfold Path however, is known as "the way." It is, in
itself, the Fourth Noble Truth, and the path to enlightenment. In this examination of the Five
Precepts I will endeavour to relate them in context to the different aspects of the Eightfold Path. All
the precepts begin with, " I abstain from" so a definition of this word is relevant. The Oxford
Dictionary ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
It would help the enrichment of appreciation for The Third Precept, which is to not to indulge in
sexual misconduct, because it would enable one to gain supra–mundane intellectual understanding
of the reasons why they should not partake in sexual transgression. Enrichment of appreciation for
The Fourth Precept which is not to tell lies or speak falsehood would be helped because right
understanding would teach an individual the supra–mundane understanding of why it wrong to lie.
Appreciation for The Fifth Precept, which is to abstain from the use of intoxicants, would be
enhanced because it would teach an individual the supra–mundane understanding of why it is wrong
to use intoxicants. The consequences of all the actions abstained from in the precepts would be fully
realised and contemplated to reach a full understanding. Those consequences of such actions would
be suffering and bad karma, preventing spiritual development for all people involved. Right
Thought would help the enhancement of appreciation for the first precept, which is to abstain from
the destruction of life, as it would eliminate negative thoughts of greed and ill–will, by over coming
sense pleasures and replace it with the cultivation of loving kindness, by practicing acts of amity
and concord. It would enhance the appreciation of the second precept, which is not to take things
that are not given, as it

How Mindfulness Can Change Your Life
How Mindfulness Can Change Your Life
Adopted as the latest craze, mindfulness is more than just a passing fad. This meditation technique
stretches back thousands of years in Eastern cultures. While it was once a technique used primarily
by Buddhist monks, modern researchers have discovered some of the immense benefits of being
mindful in every day life.
How Mindfulness Works
At its heart, mindfulness is just a way to pay closer attention to everything that is going on. It
focuses on rooting yourself in the present to notice what is really happening within your mind and
body. You begin to notice the things that are going on around you without judging what is going on.
The flowers grow, your boss gives you a new project and cars drive by just because that is what they
do. With this mind set, you stop judging and are able to just exist within the moment. Instead of
allowing yourself to go into autopilot, you are able to observe your life at a distance.

In 2011, Harvard University conducted a study. In the trial, the participants had to carry out a
mindfulness program for eight weeks. During this time, the density of the gray matter in their minds
actually increased. In total, there were eight different regions of the mind that were affected.
With a mindfulness practice, the anterior cingulate cortex (ACC) is improved, which allows for
greater self–regulation, less impulsiveness and better focus. The gray matter in the hippocampus
increases. Since the hippocampus is responsible for emotion, memories, the limbic system and
cortisol, changes in this section of the brain can reduce post–traumatic stress disorder, depression
and chronic stress. Interestingly, individuals with low gray matter in the hippocampus are more
likely to have PTSD or depression. Due to this, mindfulness can actually reduce the impact or treat

Buddhist Meditation Essay
Meditation as a whole and not just Buddhist meditation is a process that a person uses to quiet the
mind and body so one can become away of a higher truth. Meditation has been incorporated in
virtually all religions around the world. Of course not all religions use the actual term "meditation",
it can be referred to as praying the rosary and so on. Meditation is not always and does not need to
be associated with religion. There are plenty of people that meditate daily who have no religious
affiliation or even believe in God. Meditation can stand on its own without religion, do to the many
health benefits both physically and psychologically. A successful meditation is when the mind
becomes quiet without thoughts and the meditator is no longer aware of the body. ... Show more

In Buddhist meditation the mind and body are joined together as one. Through Buddhist meditation
the goal becomes "no goal" and the mind becomes silent with an increased awareness. Another way
of stating this is, in Buddhist meditation, meditation is performed for the sake of meditation and the
cultivation of wisdom. The purpose of Buddhist meditation is to still the mind and stop the never
ending flow of thoughts we all have. There are several different ways to perform Buddhist
meditation. These Buddhist meditation techniques have been practiced for a long time and are
proven to work. There are no right or wrong places to practice Buddhist meditation. It has been
shown that when Buddhist meditation is practiced in a group that the meditation experience is much
deeper. It is also known that when Buddhist meditation is practiced in the same place at the same
time the meditation becomes deeper much faster. Of course these things are not required, but will
only aid the meditator in the practice of Buddhist

Mindfulness Meditation In Public Schools
CONCERNS
There is increased interest toward mindfulness meditation, particularly in education. A number of
school programs have emerged claiming improvements in the following areas: executive functions,
prosociality, emotional regulation, and overall wellbeing (Broderick and Frank, 2014; Flook et al.
2010; Schonert–Reichl and Lawlor, 2010). Oddly, very few risks were reported in the studies. In a
systematic review of twenty–four mindfulness–based school interventions, overall results show
students either benefited from the interventions or gained no effect. Negligible negative effects were
reported (Zenner, Herrnleben–Kurz and Walach, 2014). It is important to consider the identification
and detection of undesirable outcomes, as well ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
For example, a Vancouver father launched a petition calling for the withdrawal of all meditation
programs from public schools alleging that such programs, imposed on children, violate their
freedom of religion (Chwartkowski, 2016). However, Canda and Furnam (as cited in Napoli et al.
2005)) claim that the practices of mindfulness meditation, such as mindful breathing, are compatible
with all religious beliefs.
CONCLUSION
This essay has looked at the relationship between mindfulness and optimal functioning in the school
setting and used the PROSPER framework proposed by Noble and McGrath (2015), as it illustrates
effectively the many dimensions of student flourishing.
In a world of fast–paced and instant communication, it is necessary to teach children and teens to
stop and be quiet, and the most propitious times to do so are in the periods of life where brain
plasticity is higher, namely, early childhood and adolescence (Galla, Kaiser–Greenland and Black,
2016).
Mindfulness interventions show promise as a cost–effective strategy to promote both academic
success and wellbeing in children and adolescents, as any increase in self–control and executive
functions, even small, may yield bigger outcomes over the years (Moffitt et al.

The Monkey Who Is The Central Character Of Wu Cheng
Monkey who is the central character of Wu Cheng is lead on a passage where he comes across a lot
of difficulties. While on this journey, he acquires new friendships, but still faces countless nemeses.
He meets different people along the way and all of them strive to be a true Buddhist, but all lack
some of the must have characteristics to be a true Buddhist. I choose to write about this because it
pertains to our everyday lives. We strive to be perfect and strive to have all qualities needed to be a
decent person. But the fact of the matter is that it is simply something we can always strive for but
will always need to work on. There is never enough that a person can do because there is always
room for improvement. I relate this life matter to the story because even if one thinks they have all
the characteristics to be anything there is always something that can be improved on no matter how
perfect you portray yourself to be. I will portray the characters on what they are faced with and what
each of them represents. They all have common assets that are a part of human nature, but none has
all of what it takes to be a true Buddhist.
. Tripitaka represents what I call an everyday man, a man that represents the basics of what human
nature entails. He has characteristics that an everyday man holds. Attractive and fervent Buddhist
monk, he is often portrayed as the weaker link. Tripitaka is frequently dominated by his flamboyant
acquaintances, particularly by monkey, who usually

Won Buddhism Temple's Website
Reading through the Won Buddhist Temple's website and the Wikipedia article was very interesting
and informative. I was curious to learn about what exactly Won Buddhism is and how it differs from
the other forms of Buddhism that we are learning about. I learned that it is a form of Buddhism that
seeks to make Enlightenment attainable for all and that the teachings are meant to me "relevant and
suitable to contemporary society". In Won Buddhism the practices are simplified so that all people,
regardless of wealth, occupation, or external living conditions, are able to practice Buddhism and
achieve nirvana. I learned that a central difference of Won Buddhism is that it simplifies the
teachings and practices so they are easily understandable and applicable; it also practices that are
considered "outdated, confusing, or unnecessary are removed". I also found it striking the Won is "a
compound word for truth, enlightenment, and teaching" in that in Korean "Won means circle and
symbolizes the ultimate truth, Bul means ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
I especially get this impression from the question and answer section of the website where it said
that "Won–Buddhism is a warm and low–key Buddhist tradition". I also think that the temple will be
a very relaxed and open place in that on the website it says that they focus on promoting a "practical
path for cultivating calmness and a caring spirituality". In order to have the most beneficial
experience as possible for this site visit, I am trying to remain as open minded as possible about the
experience. At this point I do not have any questions or topics of concern for this site visit, but am
interested to see how this meditation session will compare to the meditation session that I
participated in at the Nichiren Shoshu Myosenji Buddhist Temple during my site visit last

Mindfulness-Based Therapy
Dating all the way back to ancient Buddhist and Yogi practices, Mindfulness–Based Therapy (MBT)
has been implemented to treat anxiety and mood based disorders (Hofmann, 2010). Mindfulness is a
process that leads a specific mental state where there is a nonjudgmental awareness of what is going
inside and outside of the person who is having the experience (Hofmann, 2010). Anxiety is a mental
disorder that keeps a person in a constant state of worry, nervousness, and unease. This disorder can
cause many disruptions in a person's life like being unable to properly communication with another
person. Alternatively, anxiety can be as extreme as being afraid to leave the house for months at a
time. The purpose of this study would be to create a theory

The Effects Of Meditation On Stress Management
The Effects of Meditation in Stress Management
Hannah Gray
Amberton University
Introduction
Over the past few years, I have developed more and more stress in my life. I have issues with being
overwhelmed and being anxious. Throughout this period of added stress and building anxiety, I have
searched for ways to help manage those things. I wanted to be able to relax. I wanted to be able to
focus, remain calm, and remain happy. I needed to do all of these things in order to be productive.
One of the ways to manage my stress, reduce my anxiety, remain calm and happy, and be able to
focus, was to practice meditation regularly. I began going to guided meditation classes downtown at
one of the museums here in Dallas. I ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Bond (2011) states, "Along with enhancing cognitive performance, meditation seems to have an
effect on emotional well–being" (p. 1). I want to see how meditation has helped others, and I want
to see the research that has already been conducted.
Another purpose I have in this study is to be able to use meditation to help me improve my
relationships with others. Charoensukmongkol (2014) says, "People who regularly practice
mindfulness meditation can easily develop the ability to detect and understand the emotions of
others" (p. 3). It would be very beneficial to every aspect of my life if I could find a way to
understand the emotions of others more clearly.
Significance
This study is significant because stress can be detrimental to one's physical, emotional, and mental
health. Schreiner & Malcolm (2008) suggests that, "mindfulness training is beneficial in reducing
the symptoms of subclinical "depression and anxiety and can substantially reduce stress" (p. 1). It is
always important to find ways to help manage and reduce daily stressors. I think that many people
would care about this study, because stress is something that everyone experiences throughout their
life in one way or another. Although stress is not always negative, most of the time, it is. Most
people would want to know how they could manage and reduce their stress. I think that my study
will make contributions of relief for those who are looking for ways to manage stress, relax, focus,

Incorporating Tibetan Buddhism into Modern Psychotherapy...
Incorporating Tibetan Buddhism into Modern Psychotherapy
As the world moves into the twenty first century, Western civilizations are witnessing a surge of
new technology, ideas and economic success. Urbanization is spreading rapidly and Western
society's push for progression is becoming more apparent. However, this obsession with
advancement has begun to take its toll on the happiness of the citizens. Studies have shown that in
2002, up to 13 percent of U.S. citizens suffered from mental disorders and that this number has only
increased since then (Rinpche 60). As a result of our push for new technology, more techniques and
medication are evolving and being used in psychotherapy. We must, however, wonder if it is time to

To prove the benefits of incorporating Buddhist philosophies into Western psychotherapy, I will
examine three specific Buddhist ideas: the connection of experience and meaning, the idea of
emptiness and the loss of the ego, and the true nature of the mind.
In order to examine the benefits of incorporating Buddhist ideas for psychotherapy patients, we
must first move past the common Western idea that Buddhism is too culture–bound and religious–
oriented to be incorporated into Western societies. While many Eastern cultures do consider
Buddhism as their primary religion, the philosophies behind the religious practices are
psychologically based (Michalon 203). The Dalai Lama, one of the Buddhists primary religious
leaders, agreed to this when he sad, "It is possible for people to adopt various Buddhist meditative
techniques or mental training without being a Buddhist (Gay 172)." It is of no threat to the religion
of any psychotherapy patient to be able to understand and incorporate Buddhist ideas into his or her
way of life. In order to progress to a happier lifestyle, we must be able to open our minds to examine
other philosophies and how we may benefit from them. Tibetan Buddhism offers a very
philosophical approach to a happier and more compassionate way of thinking.

The Day Of My Meditation Practice
It is now the 8th day of my meditation practice. I can't believe how far I have come since the first
day. I was already addicted to the feeling and idea of meditation. I was surprised at how clear my
mind was today before I began my mantra recitation. As always, I felt the tension in my body fade
away as I got into my meditative practice. At the end of today's session I felt really good!
I sat on my bed and got comfortable before beginning my meditative practice today. I started off
with concentrating on my breathing before reciting my mantra. I felt my body relax. I was surprise
at the feeling of ease and relation mediation was providing to me. I feel very good about this
practice.
Today I decided to do something a little different. Instead of repeating my mantra in my head using
my own voice, I decided to listen to an audio playing of the mantra. I sat on my bed and got
comfortable before putting on my ear buds on and playing the mantra. It felt different listening to
someone else's voice, however I did enjoy it. I found myself more easily being able to concentrate
on the mantra, without having to think about the words. I felt my body relax and I enjoyed the
sensation that was running through my bones.
Once again, I choose to opt to listen to the audio playing of my mantra. I sat down and concentrated
on my breathing before hitting play. I enjoyed listening to someone else's voice, it was oddly very
calming. At the end of my session, I felt very joyful. I hoped to

Reflection On Mindfulness Meditation
Mindfulness
The second transformational practice that I chose to participate in for this course was mindfulness. I
decided to perform this in a meditative structure with similar goals to my first transformational
practice, which was a different form of meditation, and see which provided more benefit or was
simply a better fit for me. Decreasing my stress level and reducing work related anxiety were the
two primary objectives I was hoping to transform by engaging in this twice a week.
Through my personal experience with the mindfulness meditation, a lesson that I learned was that
this offered a substantial amount of stress relief. Not particularly attending to thoughts that enter my
mind and being mindful of the present, allowed stress from the day to dwindle away. I found the
meditation to be particularly effective on high stress days and this was a welcome event when I had
a very hectic day at work. Further, I discovered that in my case, this form of meditation was better at
removing stress than utilizing a mantra meditative technique. Another lesson learned was that
mindfulness meditation did not lessen my work anxiety to any great degree. It may have taken my
mind off it during the meditation practice, but I would feel some anxiousness soon afterwards as
thoughts of work began to prevail after my earnest focus during meditation came to an end.
However, I think with more time to develop the practice outside of a meditative setting, it is possible
that this could be

The Relationship Between Meditation and Mental and...
Rooting back to its' ancient times, meditation has been around for thousands of years, especially in
the Eastern part of the world and has spread to the Western countries in early 1970s.
Contrary to what I initially believe meditation is, prior to taking this course, which is the mental
concentration on something, meditation is actually a thoughtless awareness of an individual's
surroundings. Dhyana, the generic Sanskrit term for meditation is so much more than being alone
with one's thoughts, it is about the state of mind being calm but alert.
Sogyal Rinpoche in The Tibetan Book of Living and Dying said that it is through meditation that
you are able to go on a journey to discover yourself, paving the way to enlightenment.1 ... Show

According to studies by Chiesa and Seretti, 2009 and Hassed, 1996, meditation also relieves stress
and seems to be an effective way to increase overall general well–being as it reduces the production
of stress hormones such as cortisol and adrenaline.5,6
Bloomberg also reported a study by John Denninger, a psychiatrist at Harvard Medical School
showing that meditation also wards of diseases.7
Meditation boosts the immune system, making people who practice it less susceptible to falling sick.
Where & when will I meditate?
Ideally, the rooftop, by the private pool or the balcony would also be good locations to carry out the
meditation, as it is secluded, quiet and tranquil so that I can truly be with myself. I should also draw
up a schedule to allocate time to meditate in a comfortable, quiet and safe environment such as my
apartment to truly enjoy the meditation. I should also always make it a point to not rush through my
meditation as it lowers the effectiveness of it. If I were to be busy, I would not force myself to
meditate because it would not be sincere.

Impacts Of The Shikoku Pilgrimage
Shikoku Pilgrimage
Is the "Omairingu" project inspiring or ridiculous?
Introduction
The Shikoku Henro is a Buddhist Pilgrimage visiting eighty eight Buddhist Temples in Shikoku to
commemorate one of the most famous Japanese Buddhist Monks – Kūkai as known as Kōbō–
Daishi. This pilgrimage is a training bringing both physical and spiritual benefits to pilgrims
through its intensive process. Nevertheless, due to the consequences of rapid modernization in
Japan, cultural practices like Shikoku Henro are at threats of erosion because of the increasing
concentration of Japanese people on fulfilling material life rather than enriching spiritual
experience. Facing challenges of being eternally forgotten, Shikoku Pilgrimage needs a greater
dynamic to continue preserving its quintessence. One of the possible solutions that were already
implemented is giving birth to the "Omairingu" manga, anime and cosplay pilgrimage in attempts to
reintroduce this holy practice in a more pop–cultural approach. However, the "Omairingu" concept
is quite controversial among traditional pilgrims and pop–culture fans on how much is too much to
deliver sacred images. For this controversy, this research will examine the cultural and economic
impacts of "Omairingu" on the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Essay on Buddhist view on Abortion
It is quite clear from a variety of sources that abortion has been severely disapproved of in the
Buddhist tradition. It is also equally clear that abortion has been tolerated in Buddhist Japan and
accommodated under exceptional circumstances by some modern Buddhists in the U.S. The
situation is similar to that of Roman Catholicism, where abortion, though disapproved of in the
strongest terms by Church authorities, is still practiced by a large number of devoted Catholics and
defended by at least a few.
As a Buddhist, I would most likely still be for abortion. Buddhism itself speaks with more than one
moral voice on this issue against abortion. The core belief in Buddhism is against abortion, but there
are commonly people of this religion ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
If genes were entirely what made up a person, than abortion would not be acceptable, but that is not
the case. In very early stages of a pregnancy, Buddhists don't think of the fetus as a person yet.
I am a Japanese Buddhist. Where I'm from, Buddhism is a little bit different. A lot of Buddhists
consider abortion a moral crime, but in Buddhist metaphysics, the life force comes from an
existence which is fluid like water and returns to that existence. The fetus is understood to be in a
stage of becoming a discrete thing passing out of the ancient waters. Life that appears in our world
or in a woman's uterus is the formation of a being that was before in the liquid like state of another
reality. Children are liquid and only gradually solidify into humans, this process not being realized
until after birth. Accordingly, the newborn gradually make the transition from the world of the gods
and Buddhas into that of human beings. Most Japanese Buddhists (like myself) believe that you can
be cursed by your baby after the abortion procedure. Because of this, they perform a Mizuko Kuyo
after an abortion. "Mizuko" means water child, "kuyo" means memorial service conducted in most
cases by Buddhist priests.Mizuko Kuyos are ritual ceremonies of apology and remembrance for
aborted fetuses, or the stillborn and miscarried.
Buddhists are strong believers in Karma, the law of cause and effect. They are often morally

Anxiety And Learning Anxiety
Adolescents today are forced to face the intensified stressors of life in our high pressured society
and the cognitive, physiological, and emotional changes that take place throughout this stage of
development. As a result, the rates of many psychopathologies increase significantly among
adolescents ages 10–16. Extensive research that shows that anxiety levels and disrupted social skills
can be particularly high among adolescents with learning disabilities (LD). However, the origin of
anxiety as it relates to LD has yet to be determined, making it hard to treat. On the one hand, there

Thus, the authors hypothesized that if mindfulness meditation can encourage attentional factors and
self–esteem and, thus, reduce anxiety, it may also concurrently enhance social skills and academic
performance. They also hypothesized that mindfulness meditation (MM) would positively influence
all three of these outcome variables by mitigating cognitive interference. The participant sample was
composed of thirty
two adolescent volunteers (aged 13–17) recruited from four classes in a private
high school for children with LD. For five days a week, the participants were led in mindfulness
meditation (not identified with MBSR) for five to ten minutes at the beginning of each class period
by two classroom teachers. The researchers used a pre

Buddhism Culture : Social Organization In The Buddhist...
Buddhist patients believe that space has a great impact on their lives. They believe that the space
they inhabit directly affects their health (Das,1997). Spatial interactions can be manifested as
patients bringing items from home to the hospital in order to create a healing space for themselves,
or it can simply be a patient meditating in their room in order to change the energy in the space.
Each patient will have his or her own personal view on space, and the nurse should be sensitive to
this.
Social Organization in the Buddhist Culture The social organization in Buddhist culture is twofold.
First, there is a great focus on the individual letting go of their ego and coming to terms with the
impermanence of life. Life is ever–changing and fleeting. Buddhists in general spend a great deal of
time alone, meditating and learning about oneself, the better to let go of ego. On the other hand,
Buddhism takes into account the small role that individuals play in the world, with rules such as not
eating animal products because it would harm a living being and practicing kindness toward others
so as not to inflict any pain on them (Das,1997). On an individual level, Buddhists can have varying
levels of social organization when it comes to family, friends, and support systems. This is
dependent on where they grew up. For example, a Buddhist from Seattle, Washington is probably
going to have a very different social structure than a Buddhist from Nepal. Social organization

Mindfulness Meditation : Improving Everyday Life
MINDFULNESS MEDITATION:
Improving Everyday Life
Keanna Hamilton
East Carolina University
Mindfulness meditation: Improving everyday life In recent decades mindfulness meditation has
grown increasingly popular in modern societies. As researcher Jean Kristellar (2007) explained,
"Mindfulness meditation, also known as "insight meditation" or "Vipassana practice," has helped to
show how meditation can contribute to therapeutic growth and personal development." (pg. 393).
My research has found there is a commonly held misconception that meditation requires the
individual to clear their mind of all thoughts, resulting in "mindlessness." However, all meditation
techniques leads to the ability to maintain focus and awareness. Mindfulness meditation is an ability
to acknowledge thoughts and observing them in a non–judgmental manner rather than focusing on a
simple object. As humans, we often live our lives on autopilot mode and tend to forget to be aware
of the present. Mindfulness is said to help develop the skill of being aware of yourself and
everything around you. Practicing mindfulness aides promoting relaxation while bringing awareness
to the present which leads to taking control over daily life.
What is mindfulness?
In more simplified terms, mindfulness can be defined as being aware of the present moment.
Mindfulness is the western translation of the Pali word Sati. It is an extension of the Buddhist
practice of meditation which originated around 2500 years ago.

Meditation and the Brain Essay
Meditation and the Brain
When discussing the relationship of brain and behavior, the materialist view of human experience
runs into conflict with the historically dominant religious accounts. Recent studies, however,
suggests that there may be a "middle view" between the two world–views. Religions, especially
Buddhism, stress the role of meditation in one's spiritual growth. Meditation has tangible
psychological and physiological benefits, though, which can be explained strictly in neurobiological
terms. Understanding of how meditation affects the brain, and, by extension, human behavior, also
gives insight into consciousness, the role of feedback loops, and the nature of the I–function.
The goal of Buddhist meditation is to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Instead of seeing a "soul" or a "mind" as the seat of personal identity, in Buddhism, the self is to be
found in processes. Meditation, then, has the therapeutic effect of disengaging the practitioner from
self–consciousness, freeing the mind. The view of the world without the construct of a permanent
essence enables one to "experience reality as it really is" (3). It is important to note that Buddhism
does not distinguish mental processes from other senses. Just as seeing takes a visual object, the
mind takes a mental object (1). Just as the eye is free to take in different visual objects, the mind is
free, as well. While meditation aims to develop "single–pointedness of mind," it is ultimately to free
it from external objects. The focus is on the process of breathing, in Zen, and, eventually, one can
reach a state where one is not considering anything (2). Zen considers the "blank–mind" stage to be
a higher form of consciousness because it is free from attachments.
Indeed, one of the goals of meditation is the "mindful state," which is awareness of objects, mind–
states, and physical states but not attachment to them. Buddhism puts a great emphasis on empirical
understanding of the world (3), through meditation and through observation, and the "mindful state"
is one which recognizes distractions and attachments, and acknowledges them, in order to achieve
awareness of one's true nature. While a person in meditation does not dwell on possible objects of

A Spiritual Gain but a Financial Lose
Meditation has always been seen as a way to keep the mind and soul healthy. Mediation dates back
to 1500 BCE originating in Ancient India. The practice soon started to expand and adapt to other
cultures around the world. Some of the earliest references to meditation are found in the Hindu
scriptures and it was around the 6th to 5th centuries that other forms of meditation developed into
Confucian, Taoist China, and Buddhist India (Taham). This spiritual and religious practice has been
around for thousands of years, benefiting many people. However, in the year 2017 mediation no

Research suggests that meditation may physically change the brain and body and could potentially
help to improve many health problems and promote healthy behaviors. In a 2012 study, researchers
compared brain images from 50 adults who meditate and 50 adults who don't meditate. Results
suggested that people who practiced meditation for many years have more folds in the outer layer of
the brain. This process (called gyrification) may increase the brain's ability to process information
(Meditation: In Depth).
In many ways, the scientific studies showing how positive mediation has created this craze of

Rilinger has created this workout called "Calm and Cardio" starting with a five–minute guided

dumbbells. During each song, you alternate between two exercises while moving to the beat of the

Yoga Sutras And Early Buddhist Meditation
Both the Yoga sutras and early Buddhist meditation studies the eightfold or eight limbs practices and
principles. The eightfold of the early Buddhist meditation practices includes the right view, right
resolve, right speech, right action, right livelihood, right effort, right mindfulness, and right
concentration. The eight limbs of Yoga sutra meditation similarly practices five restraints, five
observances, postures, breath control, control of the senses, concentration, contemplation, and
meditative absorption. There are multiple commonalities when it comes to the practice of Yoga sutra

Scholars have long pointed out a commonality of vocabulary and concepts between the Yoga–sutras
and Buddhist texts" (pg. 24). The Yoga sutra and early Buddhist meditation helps to distance
themselves from the arrogance of the world, the materialistic possessions, and derives to the
awareness of oneself, the innermost consciousness of the self and the mind. In the tradition of the
Buddhist meditation, where there is chaos, one must and will find peace. To comprehend and
evaluate one surroundings is the key aspect in discovering self awareness. Our day to day life is an
example of one self–mindfulness because every day we learn from experiences which can lead to
great harmony, concentration, and exploration also known as Samatha meditation. When the article
declares, "The way the Buddha taught meditation was not intended to encourage people to ignore
the world or closet themselves away, as is sometimes thought, but, with the mindfulness that is
constantly enjoined, to be of it and participate in it more" (pg. 3). Concisely, the way one views the
world is determined by the outcome of ones consciousness of the mind. How we see the world and
engage in it truly opens our eyes beyond imagination, one learns to help, suffer, and experience the
world changing and they change with it. Even though, the truly ideal phase of the Buddhist

The Effects Of Mindfulness On The Mind On Present Experience
In recent years, the ancient of being aware of one's sensory experience in the present moment–of
"being mindful"–has taken a prominent place in discussions among clinicians, educators, and the
general public (Epstein, 1999; Kabat–Zinn, 2003; Bishop et al., 2004; Germer et al., 2005).
Mindfulness has been found in most cultures throughout history and now resurfacing in modern
times, in both the East and in the West. The practice of living in the present moment has been
offered as a way to cultivate well–being in our minds, in our bodies, and even in our relationships
with each other (Kornfield, 2008). Researchers has taken note of these suggestions and a number of
investigators have focused their objective lens on this form of subjective, inner focus of the mind on
present experience. Evidence from these studies supports the notion that being mindful, being aware
of the present moment without grasping on to judgments, does indeed improve immune function,
enhance a sense of equanimity and clarity and may even increase empathy and relational satisfaction
(Lutz et al., 2008; Siegel, 2007). First, a brief historical origin of meditation and contextualizing

types of meditation being practiced and what its documented effects have been. The second body of

Beowulf Analysis
In Beowulf there is a recurring tension between Christianity and native heathenry throughout the
world of classic Germanic literature and legend. Though all Germanic nations ultimately adopted
Christian belief, pre–Christian ideas, characters, and themes persisted in art and storytelling.
Whereas, in The Tale of Genji (TG) by Murasaki Shikibu written in the late 10th Century describes
an aristocratic worldview in the Heian period (794–1185) and allows therefore a closer look at the
religious and spiritual understanding of the Japanese upper class in this timeframe. While Shinto
influence is mentioned in the novel, Buddhism, as a popular religion once introduced to the official
court practice by Prince Shotoku in the 6. Century, is in the TG a part of everyday life.
There are many elements of Christianity found throughout the story of Beowulf: that man survives
only through the protection of God, that all earthly gifts flow from God, and that the proper bearing
of man is to be humble and unselfish. However, the strong sense of heroic pride within Beowulf can
at times be in direct conflict with these Christian values. Through this juxtaposition, we see the
dichotomies of pride vs. humility and sacrifice vs. selfishness. When Beowulf relates his battle with
Grendel's mother he acknowledges God as his protector as do others. The leader of the Geats states
that he would "gladly trust the force of God's favor" (W.Lit. 922). There is a sense of mystical
protection present throughout the story of Beowulf.
Yet in the story there is also a strong sense that God's protection must be earned; a warrior must first
be true to his values, courage, honesty, pride, and humility and only then will he earn God's
protection. In addition to earthly protection, there is also the sense that all earthly good, be it success
or wealth, derives from God. God is described as the "Granter of Grace, true Lord of glory" (W.Lit.
967). The true power lies with God. Any delight that a man enjoys here on earth is achieved only
through the grace of God. Not only that, but the earthly success, given by God, must be handled
with humility and a sense of sharing or the earthly king will bring on his own doom. Hrothgar tells
Beowulf that life itself

The Aesthetic Of Ruins On The Beauty Of Abandoned...
The aesthetic of ruins can help us understand aspects of interior design in terms of the lack of
human presence indicating elements we might otherwise ignore. To explore this theme, I will
examine how theorists have thought about the aesthetic of abandonment in relation to the beauty of
abandoned structures, beginning with the work of Gordon Matta–Clark, in leading us to rethink our
lived in environment apart from just its visual aspect. Gay Watson introduces the idea of emptiness
as a therapeutic perspective and following this I discuss the origins of beauty in impermanence,
non–selfhood and emptiness. I also analysis beauty existing in ruined buildings that reveals the
relationship between space and human beings, supported by the work of Henri Lefebvre. In order to
link the use of abandonment and aesthetic beauty, the background to Gordon Matta–Clark will be
briefly outlined. Known for his site–specific 'building cuts' made in the 1970s, Matta–Clark draws
our attention to the fact that we are usually too busy to notice the other significances of our living
space besides its domestic function. Apart from its interior equipment, we care little about a
building's character, which may lack functionality or an attractive aesthetic. Matta–Clark's works
usually focus on the abandoned building from which he removes sections of ceilings, floors, and
walls, as a part of so–called "Anarchitecture". He spent several years studying French literature in
Paris in 1968, the source of his

Meditation Argumentative Essay
The many improvements in a person's life that can be experienced through meditation are
wonderful. The world can seem so fast paced and hectic that even a few minutes a few times a day
can make a big difference. The calming and soothing relaxation of a guided meditation can help
people survive beyond the harder times life often has to offer. A good meditation guide is where a
beginner should start when entering into meditation.
Meditation has often been linked with spirituality and religion. Used by yoga practitioners as well as

Even if only taken a few minutes at a time, and only once or twice a day, a person will open
themselves up to living without stress and turmoil. It has been said that the blood chemistry of a
person undergoing guide meditation is different than that of someone experiencing stress.
Meditation allows this calming change to eventually affect other parts of daily life without having to
meditate, so long as meditation itself is practiced on a regular basis.
To begin properly using meditation in one's life, start by creating a list of goals. These should be
things one is willing to accomplish and interested in achieving. Meditation has been able to help
people recover from addictions, deal with chronic pain and long term diseases, and experience
serenity. Whether one is seeking peace or to achieve something, have the list of goals clear in your
mind.
Once a set list of goals is in place, find a good spot within the home to meditate. It's important that
this place be comfortable to sit in and spend time in, a welcoming place. It's also important that this
meditative space be free from regular interruptions. Consider a spot away from the front door and

Mindful Eating Is The Key To Weight Loss
What is Mindfulness?
Mindfulness is the state of being aware of the present or what you are going through. It is a
psychological procedure, in which you focus your attention or mind on the experiences happening
in the very moment.
Psychologists and thinkers have termed mindfulness the best way to the achieve the greatest
happiness and wisdom in the world. This can be achieved by practicing meditation the Buddhist
way; however, various other meditation techniques can also take you closer to the state of
mindfulness.
Simply, mindfulness is being conscious of your mind, body, and soul. Even simpler, when you attain
mindfulness you are aware of the whats, whens, wheres, hows, and many other puzzling thoughts

Differences Between The Bodhisattva In The Davis Museum
Another more obvious difference between the Bodhisattva in the Davis Museum is the coloring of
each. Unfortunately, time has worn away most of the paint on these heads, but the left Bodhisattva
shows more remnants of the original painting, including a small wavy mustache. Red paint can still
be seen in the headdress, the urna and the lines of the neck. Both heads have dark paint outlining the
eyebrows and the eyes, offering the viewer a look into Gandharan culture. One can see the hair was
once painted black based on the left Bodhisattva's hair which still contains some of the dark
pigment. While most of the paint has worn away, the naturalistic sculpting style allows the life of
the Bodhisattvas to remain intact without the added color. The sculptures appear dynamic due to the
use of lines and shadows in order to further one's sense of naturalism. The eye sockets are set deep
into each head which causes a shadow to fall over the eyes due to the brow ... Show more content on

The stucco heads are examples of the novel art that was formed when art from different countries
was allowed to influence each other. This is visibly illustrated by the Davis Museum placing the
Gandharan heads between the South Asian and Mediterranean exhibits, symbolizing the mixing of
the various art forms. While the informational cards about the Bodhisattvas are helpful tools, they
must be taken with a grain of salt. Whatever is printed on the informational cards must be
questioned and analyzed instead of believed to be the truth. The museum controls the informational
cards and thus, controls the narrative that the audience will learn about each piece. Nonetheless, it is
critical to be curious about the circumstances surrounding museums and their collections so in the
future, such questionable practices won't be tolerated and important cultural pieces will no longer be

Passive – is a type of mediation that allows the mind to unwind and un–focus often resulting in
daydreaming or sleep.
Active – is used to help the body be in a meditative state at all times throughout the day. The
peacefulness brought about by active mediation helps the person bring peace into daily situations.
Religious – used to help bring one closer to God. A more precise name for religious meditation is
'thinking'. Often, this type of meditation comes with CDs with a guided coach who takes the mind

Usually in my life I will experience a few negative emotions and thoughts and then briefly affirm
that what I am believing is untrue and then switch my mind to something different. I also have
journals that I will write in every once in a while, but it isn't something I use for overcoming
negative emotions. Coming from a conservative, religious family I have always heard that
meditation is bad. While Neff practices Buddhist meditation and uses some of these ideas in her
programs to teach self–compassion, after listening to one of the meditation podcasts, I can see the
benefit. The meditation practices she developed helps one relax, become more self–aware, and
focused on thoughts of love and compassion not only towards oneself but also towards others.
Another aspect that I had not taken into consideration is the difference between self–compassion
and self–esteem. As Neff explains, self–esteem is basically one's perceived value and worth;
however, it is contingent on how one is compared to another. I have never looked at self–esteem
being a problematic, negative term, now I understand the aspects of it that can be detrimental to
ones well–being. Always striving to have high self–esteem leads us to put other people down in the
process, it also insinuates that we have to be perfect and better to be worthy, which is the opposite of
what Neff's concept of self–compassion entails. Our society thrives on the idea that one has to be
better than their counterpart, what we lack is this idea of self–compassion. Therefore, I think it
would be very beneficial to teach self–compassion in children; this may lead to an overall more
compassionate generation that flourishes on how we can help each other and ourselves

Kerouac was a devoted student of the Buddhist way and would often impress his peers with his
knowledge of the Sutras and other Buddhist texts and ideas. This is particularly interesting when it
is considered that these peers were other students of Buddhism such as Gary Snyder or even Philip
Whalen, who is an ordained Zen monk. In fact, Kerouac was so immersed in Buddhist thought that
in 1956 he completed the manuscript to what would become a 420 page book titled Some Of The
Dharma, which was a collection of notes and thoughts on various ideas taken from the Sutras.
Included also were numerous poems and prose poems, which were attempts to transliterate the
ancient wisdom of Buddhism into a modern context, applicable to the western intellectual and
spiritual journeyman. Some of the Dharma was to be a study guide for the beginning practice of
Kerouac’s good friend and companion Allen Ginsberg.
While Kerouac was writing what was perhaps his best and certainly one of his most spiritually
driven novels, Desolation Angels, he was also writing a poem to accompany the novel which was
titled Desolation Blues. Although written after Kerouac was no longer up on Desolation Peak
serving as a fire lookout in the Sierra Nevada mountain range, it was a reflection upon the many
contemplations provoked by the solitude and serenity of the time he spent alone atop the mountain.

Flower Ornament Sutra Vs Buddhism Essay
Buddhism, on the other hand, understands the psychological nature of humans very deeply and
develops effective treatment methods. As revealed in the Flower Ornament Sutra [Avatamsaka
Sutra], "Our perception Three Kingdoms arise from the mind, so do Twelve Links of Dependent
Origination; birth and death come from the mind, which are extinguished when the mind is put to
rest". If we view Buddhism in this lens, itself in conglomeration with psychology has much to
reveal about both practices (Williams–Oerberg, Elizabeth, 2012).
The journey "home" that Buddhists refer to as the privilege of enlightenment, the ultimate truth, is
called the paramattha. The Paramattha is not the same journey as other faiths profess, because other
faiths, like the science known as psychology, emphasize outside influence, in one way or another, in

Analysis Of Vipassana Meditation ( Vm )
a. Background i. Specifics 1. Theory
Vipassana meditation (VM) aims to create psychological distance between the self and emotions to
allow emotional regulation and reduce negative results. Meditation combines three interacting
practices of intention, attention, and attitude. Meditators are guided by the intention to be fully
aware of their emotional and physical states, self–regulate, and liberate themselves by focusing their
attention on each moment and be aware of the contents of their consciousness with an attitude of
non–judgmental compassion, acceptance, and curiosity. Cognitive reappraisal (paying attention to
thoughts) is utilized to regulate emotional states. By reappraising their relationship with their
emotions and habitual responses, practitioners can disassociate from their emotional state and
reframe thoughts, feelings, and emotions as impermanent mental occurrence.1 Another way to state
this process is that pain reduction occurs by "uncoupling" the physical sensation from the emotional
and cognitive experiences of pain, thus reducing the overall pain experienced.2 2. Indications for
Vipassana Meditation
VM has been utilized to modulate pain, mitigate anxiety and depression, improve cognitive
function, and produce changes in gray matter density of the brain. 3. Contraindications for

Mindfulness And Its Impact On The Workplace Essay
Mindfulness has enjoyed its popularity in recent years. Several big companies have used
mindfulness to adopted the firms with change of management (Aviles & Dent 2015). Coming from

Mindfulness reflected of how individual response and having awareness about present events

because mindfulness could be learned with training. Nevertheless, Bruce (Cited in David and Hayes

workplace. The author believes that mindfulness needs measurement to prove it works on the
workplace. The reason behind his statement is mindfulness recognized only as self–reported and

The Five Precepts In The Context Of The Eightfold Path Essay

 • 1. The Five Precepts in the Context of The Eightfold Path Essay The Five Precepts in the Context of The Eightfold Path Both 'The Five Precepts' and 'The Eightfold Path' are significant elements of the Buddhist religion. The precepts act as a guide for the average everyday lay Buddhist on how to create the least amount of karmic energy possible. It by no means is the way directly to reaching Nirvana. The Eightfold Path however, is known as "the way." It is, in itself, the Fourth Noble Truth, and the path to enlightenment. In this examination of the Five Precepts I will endeavour to relate them in context to the different aspects of the Eightfold Path. All the precepts begin with, " I abstain from" so a definition of this word is relevant. The Oxford Dictionary ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... It would help the enrichment of appreciation for The Third Precept, which is to not to indulge in sexual misconduct, because it would enable one to gain supra–mundane intellectual understanding of the reasons why they should not partake in sexual transgression. Enrichment of appreciation for The Fourth Precept which is not to tell lies or speak falsehood would be helped because right understanding would teach an individual the supra–mundane understanding of why it wrong to lie. Appreciation for The Fifth Precept, which is to abstain from the use of intoxicants, would be enhanced because it would teach an individual the supra–mundane understanding of why it is wrong to use intoxicants. The consequences of all the actions abstained from in the precepts would be fully realised and contemplated to reach a full understanding. Those consequences of such actions would be suffering and bad karma, preventing spiritual development for all people involved. Right Thought would help the enhancement of appreciation for the first precept, which is to abstain from the destruction of life, as it would eliminate negative thoughts of greed and ill–will, by over coming sense pleasures and replace it with the cultivation of loving kindness, by practicing acts of amity and concord. It would enhance the appreciation of the second precept, which is not to take things that are not given, as it ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
 • 2. How Mindfulness Can Change Your Life How Mindfulness Can Change Your Life Adopted as the latest craze, mindfulness is more than just a passing fad. This meditation technique stretches back thousands of years in Eastern cultures. While it was once a technique used primarily by Buddhist monks, modern researchers have discovered some of the immense benefits of being mindful in every day life. How Mindfulness Works At its heart, mindfulness is just a way to pay closer attention to everything that is going on. It focuses on rooting yourself in the present to notice what is really happening within your mind and body. You begin to notice the things that are going on around you without judging what is going on. The flowers grow, your boss gives you a new project and cars drive by just because that is what they do. With this mind set, you stop judging and are able to just exist within the moment. Instead of allowing yourself to go into autopilot, you are able to observe your life at a distance. While practicing ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In 2011, Harvard University conducted a study. In the trial, the participants had to carry out a mindfulness program for eight weeks. During this time, the density of the gray matter in their minds actually increased. In total, there were eight different regions of the mind that were affected. With a mindfulness practice, the anterior cingulate cortex (ACC) is improved, which allows for greater self–regulation, less impulsiveness and better focus. The gray matter in the hippocampus increases. Since the hippocampus is responsible for emotion, memories, the limbic system and cortisol, changes in this section of the brain can reduce post–traumatic stress disorder, depression and chronic stress. Interestingly, individuals with low gray matter in the hippocampus are more likely to have PTSD or depression. Due to this, mindfulness can actually reduce the impact or treat these mental ... • 3. Buddhist Meditation Essay Meditation as a whole and not just Buddhist meditation is a process that a person uses to quiet the mind and body so one can become away of a higher truth. Meditation has been incorporated in virtually all religions around the world. Of course not all religions use the actual term "meditation", it can be referred to as praying the rosary and so on. Meditation is not always and does not need to be associated with religion. There are plenty of people that meditate daily who have no religious affiliation or even believe in God. Meditation can stand on its own without religion, do to the many health benefits both physically and psychologically. A successful meditation is when the mind becomes quiet without thoughts and the meditator is no longer aware of the body. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In Buddhist meditation the mind and body are joined together as one. Through Buddhist meditation the goal becomes "no goal" and the mind becomes silent with an increased awareness. Another way of stating this is, in Buddhist meditation, meditation is performed for the sake of meditation and the cultivation of wisdom. The purpose of Buddhist meditation is to still the mind and stop the never ending flow of thoughts we all have. There are several different ways to perform Buddhist meditation. These Buddhist meditation techniques have been practiced for a long time and are proven to work. There are no right or wrong places to practice Buddhist meditation. It has been shown that when Buddhist meditation is practiced in a group that the meditation experience is much deeper. It is also known that when Buddhist meditation is practiced in the same place at the same time the meditation becomes deeper much faster. Of course these things are not required, but will only aid the meditator in the practice of Buddhist ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
 • 4. Mindfulness Meditation In Public Schools CONCERNS There is increased interest toward mindfulness meditation, particularly in education. A number of school programs have emerged claiming improvements in the following areas: executive functions, prosociality, emotional regulation, and overall wellbeing (Broderick and Frank, 2014; Flook et al. 2010; Schonert–Reichl and Lawlor, 2010). Oddly, very few risks were reported in the studies. In a systematic review of twenty–four mindfulness–based school interventions, overall results show students either benefited from the interventions or gained no effect. Negligible negative effects were reported (Zenner, Herrnleben–Kurz and Walach, 2014). It is important to consider the identification and detection of undesirable outcomes, as well ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... For example, a Vancouver father launched a petition calling for the withdrawal of all meditation programs from public schools alleging that such programs, imposed on children, violate their freedom of religion (Chwartkowski, 2016). However, Canda and Furnam (as cited in Napoli et al. 2005)) claim that the practices of mindfulness meditation, such as mindful breathing, are compatible with all religious beliefs. CONCLUSION This essay has looked at the relationship between mindfulness and optimal functioning in the school setting and used the PROSPER framework proposed by Noble and McGrath (2015), as it illustrates effectively the many dimensions of student flourishing. In a world of fast–paced and instant communication, it is necessary to teach children and teens to stop and be quiet, and the most propitious times to do so are in the periods of life where brain plasticity is higher, namely, early childhood and adolescence (Galla, Kaiser–Greenland and Black, 2016). Mindfulness interventions show promise as a cost–effective strategy to promote both academic success and wellbeing in children and adolescents, as any increase in self–control and executive functions, even small, may yield bigger outcomes over the years (Moffitt et al. ... • 5. The Monkey Who Is The Central Character Of Wu Cheng Monkey who is the central character of Wu Cheng is lead on a passage where he comes across a lot of difficulties. While on this journey, he acquires new friendships, but still faces countless nemeses. He meets different people along the way and all of them strive to be a true Buddhist, but all lack some of the must have characteristics to be a true Buddhist. I choose to write about this because it pertains to our everyday lives. We strive to be perfect and strive to have all qualities needed to be a decent person. But the fact of the matter is that it is simply something we can always strive for but will always need to work on. There is never enough that a person can do because there is always room for improvement. I relate this life matter to the story because even if one thinks they have all the characteristics to be anything there is always something that can be improved on no matter how perfect you portray yourself to be. I will portray the characters on what they are faced with and what each of them represents. They all have common assets that are a part of human nature, but none has all of what it takes to be a true Buddhist. . Tripitaka represents what I call an everyday man, a man that represents the basics of what human nature entails. He has characteristics that an everyday man holds. Attractive and fervent Buddhist monk, he is often portrayed as the weaker link. Tripitaka is frequently dominated by his flamboyant acquaintances, particularly by monkey, who usually ... • 6. Won Buddhism Temple's Website Reading through the Won Buddhist Temple's website and the Wikipedia article was very interesting and informative. I was curious to learn about what exactly Won Buddhism is and how it differs from the other forms of Buddhism that we are learning about. I learned that it is a form of Buddhism that seeks to make Enlightenment attainable for all and that the teachings are meant to me "relevant and suitable to contemporary society". In Won Buddhism the practices are simplified so that all people, regardless of wealth, occupation, or external living conditions, are able to practice Buddhism and achieve nirvana. I learned that a central difference of Won Buddhism is that it simplifies the teachings and practices so they are easily understandable and applicable; it also practices that are considered "outdated, confusing, or unnecessary are removed". I also found it striking the Won is "a compound word for truth, enlightenment, and teaching" in that in Korean "Won means circle and symbolizes the ultimate truth, Bul means ... I especially get this impression from the question and answer section of the website where it said that "Won–Buddhism is a warm and low–key Buddhist tradition". I also think that the temple will be a very relaxed and open place in that on the website it says that they focus on promoting a "practical path for cultivating calmness and a caring spirituality". In order to have the most beneficial experience as possible for this site visit, I am trying to remain as open minded as possible about the experience. At this point I do not have any questions or topics of concern for this site visit, but am interested to see how this meditation session will compare to the meditation session that I participated in at the Nichiren Shoshu Myosenji Buddhist Temple during my site visit last ... Mindfulness-Based Therapy Dating all the way back to ancient Buddhist and Yogi practices, Mindfulness–Based Therapy (MBT) has been implemented to treat anxiety and mood based disorders (Hofmann, 2010). Mindfulness is a process that leads a specific mental state where there is a nonjudgmental awareness of what is going inside and outside of the person who is having the experience (Hofmann, 2010). Anxiety is a mental disorder that keeps a person in a constant state of worry, nervousness, and unease. This disorder can cause many disruptions in a person's life like being unable to properly communication with another person. Alternatively, anxiety can be as extreme as being afraid to leave the house for months at a time. The purpose of this study would be to create a theory ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
 • 8. The Effects Of Meditation On Stress Management The Effects of Meditation in Stress Management Hannah Gray Amberton University Introduction Over the past few years, I have developed more and more stress in my life. I have issues with being overwhelmed and being anxious. Throughout this period of added stress and building anxiety, I have searched for ways to help manage those things. I wanted to be able to relax. I wanted to be able to focus, remain calm, and remain happy. I needed to do all of these things in order to be productive. One of the ways to manage my stress, reduce my anxiety, remain calm and happy, and be able to focus, was to practice meditation regularly. I began going to guided meditation classes downtown at one of the museums here in Dallas. I ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Bond (2011) states, "Along with enhancing cognitive performance, meditation seems to have an effect on emotional well–being" (p. 1). I want to see how meditation has helped others, and I want to see the research that has already been conducted. Another purpose I have in this study is to be able to use meditation to help me improve my relationships with others. Charoensukmongkol (2014) says, "People who regularly practice mindfulness meditation can easily develop the ability to detect and understand the emotions of others" (p. 3). It would be very beneficial to every aspect of my life if I could find a way to understand the emotions of others more clearly. Significance This study is significant because stress can be detrimental to one's physical, emotional, and mental health. Schreiner & Malcolm (2008) suggests that, "mindfulness training is beneficial in reducing the symptoms of subclinical "depression and anxiety and can substantially reduce stress" (p. 1). It is always important to find ways to help manage and reduce daily stressors. I think that many people would care about this study, because stress is something that everyone experiences throughout their life in one way or another. Although stress is not always negative, most of the time, it is. Most people would want to know how they could manage and reduce their stress. I think that my study will make contributions of relief for those who are looking for ways to manage stress, relax, focus, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
 • 9. Incorporating Tibetan Buddhism into Modern Psychotherapy... Incorporating Tibetan Buddhism into Modern Psychotherapy As the world moves into the twenty first century, Western civilizations are witnessing a surge of new technology, ideas and economic success. Urbanization is spreading rapidly and Western society's push for progression is becoming more apparent. However, this obsession with advancement has begun to take its toll on the happiness of the citizens. Studies have shown that in 2002, up to 13 percent of U.S. citizens suffered from mental disorders and that this number has only increased since then (Rinpche 60). As a result of our push for new technology, more techniques and medication are evolving and being used in psychotherapy. We must, however, wonder if it is time to try ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... To prove the benefits of incorporating Buddhist philosophies into Western psychotherapy, I will examine three specific Buddhist ideas: the connection of experience and meaning, the idea of emptiness and the loss of the ego, and the true nature of the mind. In order to examine the benefits of incorporating Buddhist ideas for psychotherapy patients, we must first move past the common Western idea that Buddhism is too culture–bound and religious– oriented to be incorporated into Western societies. While many Eastern cultures do consider Buddhism as their primary religion, the philosophies behind the religious practices are psychologically based (Michalon 203). The Dalai Lama, one of the Buddhists primary religious leaders, agreed to this when he sad, "It is possible for people to adopt various Buddhist meditative techniques or mental training without being a Buddhist (Gay 172)." It is of no threat to the religion of any psychotherapy patient to be able to understand and incorporate Buddhist ideas into his or her way of life. In order to progress to a happier lifestyle, we must be able to open our minds to examine other philosophies and how we may benefit from them. Tibetan Buddhism offers a very philosophical approach to a happier and more compassionate way of thinking. • 10. The Day Of My Meditation Practice It is now the 8th day of my meditation practice. I can't believe how far I have come since the first day. I was already addicted to the feeling and idea of meditation. I was surprised at how clear my mind was today before I began my mantra recitation. As always, I felt the tension in my body fade away as I got into my meditative practice. At the end of today's session I felt really good! I sat on my bed and got comfortable before beginning my meditative practice today. I started off with concentrating on my breathing before reciting my mantra. I felt my body relax. I was surprise at the feeling of ease and relation mediation was providing to me. I feel very good about this practice. Today I decided to do something a little different. Instead of repeating my mantra in my head using my own voice, I decided to listen to an audio playing of the mantra. I sat on my bed and got comfortable before putting on my ear buds on and playing the mantra. It felt different listening to someone else's voice, however I did enjoy it. I found myself more easily being able to concentrate on the mantra, without having to think about the words. I felt my body relax and I enjoyed the sensation that was running through my bones. Once again, I choose to opt to listen to the audio playing of my mantra. I sat down and concentrated on my breathing before hitting play. I enjoyed listening to someone else's voice, it was oddly very calming. At the end of my session, I felt very joyful. I hoped to ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
 • 11. Reflection On Mindfulness Meditation Mindfulness The second transformational practice that I chose to participate in for this course was mindfulness. I decided to perform this in a meditative structure with similar goals to my first transformational practice, which was a different form of meditation, and see which provided more benefit or was simply a better fit for me. Decreasing my stress level and reducing work related anxiety were the two primary objectives I was hoping to transform by engaging in this twice a week. Through my personal experience with the mindfulness meditation, a lesson that I learned was that this offered a substantial amount of stress relief. Not particularly attending to thoughts that enter my mind and being mindful of the present, allowed stress from the day to dwindle away. I found the meditation to be particularly effective on high stress days and this was a welcome event when I had a very hectic day at work. Further, I discovered that in my case, this form of meditation was better at removing stress than utilizing a mantra meditative technique. Another lesson learned was that mindfulness meditation did not lessen my work anxiety to any great degree. It may have taken my mind off it during the meditation practice, but I would feel some anxiousness soon afterwards as thoughts of work began to prevail after my earnest focus during meditation came to an end. However, I think with more time to develop the practice outside of a meditative setting, it is possible that this could be ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Contrary to what I initially believe meditation is, prior to taking this course, which is the mental concentration on something, meditation is actually a thoughtless awareness of an individual's surroundings. Dhyana, the generic Sanskrit term for meditation is so much more than being alone with one's thoughts, it is about the state of mind being calm but alert. Sogyal Rinpoche in The Tibetan Book of Living and Dying said that it is through meditation that you are able to go on a journey to discover yourself, paving the way to enlightenment.1 ... • 13. Impacts Of The Shikoku Pilgrimage Shikoku Pilgrimage Is the "Omairingu" project inspiring or ridiculous? Introduction The Shikoku Henro is a Buddhist Pilgrimage visiting eighty eight Buddhist Temples in Shikoku to commemorate one of the most famous Japanese Buddhist Monks – Kūkai as known as Kōbō– Daishi. This pilgrimage is a training bringing both physical and spiritual benefits to pilgrims through its intensive process. Nevertheless, due to the consequences of rapid modernization in Japan, cultural practices like Shikoku Henro are at threats of erosion because of the increasing concentration of Japanese people on fulfilling material life rather than enriching spiritual experience. Facing challenges of being eternally forgotten, Shikoku Pilgrimage needs a greater dynamic to continue preserving its quintessence. One of the possible solutions that were already implemented is giving birth to the "Omairingu" manga, anime and cosplay pilgrimage in attempts to reintroduce this holy practice in a more pop–cultural approach. However, the "Omairingu" concept is quite controversial among traditional pilgrims and pop–culture fans on how much is too much to deliver sacred images. It is also equally clear that abortion has been tolerated in Buddhist Japan and accommodated under exceptional circumstances by some modern Buddhists in the U.S. The situation is similar to that of Roman Catholicism, where abortion, though disapproved of in the strongest terms by Church authorities, is still practiced by a large number of devoted Catholics and defended by at least a few. As a Buddhist, I would most likely still be for abortion. Buddhism itself speaks with more than one moral voice on this issue against abortion. If genes were entirely what made up a person, than abortion would not be acceptable, but that is not the case. In very early stages of a pregnancy, Buddhists don't think of the fetus as a person yet. I am a Japanese Buddhist. Where I'm from, Buddhism is a little bit different. A lot of Buddhists consider abortion a moral crime, but in Buddhist metaphysics, the life force comes from an existence which is fluid like water and returns to that existence. The fetus is understood to be in a stage of becoming a discrete thing passing out of the ancient waters. Life that appears in our world or in a woman's uterus is the formation of a being that was before in the liquid like state of another reality. Children are liquid and only gradually solidify into humans, this process not being realized until after birth. Accordingly, the newborn gradually make the transition from the world of the gods and Buddhas into that of human beings. Most Japanese Buddhists (like myself) believe that you can be cursed by your baby after the abortion procedure. Because of this, they perform a Mizuko Kuyo after an abortion. "Mizuko" means water child, "kuyo" means memorial service conducted in most cases by Buddhist priests.Mizuko Kuyos are ritual ceremonies of apology and remembrance for aborted fetuses, or the stillborn and miscarried. The participant sample was composed of thirty two adolescent volunteers (aged 13–17) recruited from four classes in a private high school for children with LD. For five days a week, the participants were led in mindfulness meditation (not identified with MBSR) for five to ten minutes at the beginning of each class period by two classroom teachers. The researchers used a pre post no control design composed of three tests: the Social Skills Rating System (SSRS), The State–Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI) and Attitudinal questions. • 16. Buddhism Culture : Social Organization In The Buddhist... Buddhist patients believe that space has a great impact on their lives. They believe that the space they inhabit directly affects their health (Das,1997). Spatial interactions can be manifested as patients bringing items from home to the hospital in order to create a healing space for themselves, or it can simply be a patient meditating in their room in order to change the energy in the space. Each patient will have his or her own personal view on space, and the nurse should be sensitive to this. Social Organization in the Buddhist Culture The social organization in Buddhist culture is twofold. First, there is a great focus on the individual letting go of their ego and coming to terms with the impermanence of life. Life is ever–changing and fleeting. Buddhists in general spend a great deal of time alone, meditating and learning about oneself, the better to let go of ego. On the other hand, Buddhism takes into account the small role that individuals play in the world, with rules such as not eating animal products because it would harm a living being and practicing kindness toward others so as not to inflict any pain on them (Das,1997). On an individual level, Buddhists can have varying levels of social organization when it comes to family, friends, and support systems. This is dependent on where they grew up. For example, a Buddhist from Seattle, Washington is probably going to have a very different social structure than a Buddhist from Nepal. Social organization needs to be ... Mindfulness Meditation : Improving Everyday Life MINDFULNESS MEDITATION: Improving Everyday Life Keanna Hamilton East Carolina University Mindfulness meditation: Improving everyday life In recent decades mindfulness meditation has grown increasingly popular in modern societies. As researcher Jean Kristellar (2007) explained, "Mindfulness meditation, also known as "insight meditation" or "Vipassana practice," has helped to show how meditation can contribute to therapeutic growth and personal development." (pg. 393). My research has found there is a commonly held misconception that meditation requires the individual to clear their mind of all thoughts, resulting in "mindlessness." However, all meditation techniques leads to the ability to maintain focus and awareness. Mindfulness meditation is an ability to acknowledge thoughts and observing them in a non–judgmental manner rather than focusing on a simple object. As humans, we often live our lives on autopilot mode and tend to forget to be aware of the present. Mindfulness is said to help develop the skill of being aware of yourself and everything around you. Practicing mindfulness aides promoting relaxation while bringing awareness to the present which leads to taking control over daily life. What is mindfulness? In more simplified terms, mindfulness can be defined as being aware of the present moment. Mindfulness is the western translation of the Pali word Sati. It is an extension of the Buddhist practice of meditation which originated around 2500 years ago. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Recent studies, however, suggests that there may be a "middle view" between the two world–views. Religions, especially Buddhism, stress the role of meditation in one's spiritual growth. Meditation has tangible psychological and physiological benefits, though, which can be explained strictly in neurobiological terms. Instead of seeing a "soul" or a "mind" as the seat of personal identity, in Buddhism, the self is to be found in processes. Meditation, then, has the therapeutic effect of disengaging the practitioner from self–consciousness, freeing the mind. The view of the world without the construct of a permanent essence enables one to "experience reality as it really is" (3). It is important to note that Buddhism does not distinguish mental processes from other senses. Just as seeing takes a visual object, the mind takes a mental object (1). Just as the eye is free to take in different visual objects, the mind is free, as well. While meditation aims to develop "single–pointedness of mind," it is ultimately to free it from external objects. The focus is on the process of breathing, in Zen, and, eventually, one can reach a state where one is not considering anything (2). Zen considers the "blank–mind" stage to be a higher form of consciousness because it is free from attachments. Indeed, one of the goals of meditation is the "mindful state," which is awareness of objects, mind– states, and physical states but not attachment to them. Buddhism puts a great emphasis on empirical understanding of the world (3), through meditation and through observation, and the "mindful state" is one which recognizes distractions and attachments, and acknowledges them, in order to achieve awareness of one's true nature. Mindfulness has been found in most cultures throughout history and now resurfacing in modern times, in both the East and in the West. The practice of living in the present moment has been offered as a way to cultivate well–being in our minds, in our bodies, and even in our relationships with each other (Kornfield, 2008). Researchers has taken note of these suggestions and a number of investigators have focused their objective lens on this form of subjective, inner focus of the mind on present experience. Evidence from these studies supports the notion that being mindful, being aware of the present moment without grasping on to judgments, does indeed improve immune function, enhance a sense of equanimity and clarity and may even increase empathy and relational satisfaction (Lutz et al., 2008; Siegel, 2007). • 25. Beowulf Analysis In Beowulf there is a recurring tension between Christianity and native heathenry throughout the world of classic Germanic literature and legend. Though all Germanic nations ultimately adopted Christian belief, pre–Christian ideas, characters, and themes persisted in art and storytelling. Whereas, in The Tale of Genji (TG) by Murasaki Shikibu written in the late 10th Century describes an aristocratic worldview in the Heian period (794–1185) and allows therefore a closer look at the religious and spiritual understanding of the Japanese upper class in this timeframe. While Shinto influence is mentioned in the novel, Buddhism, as a popular religion once introduced to the official court practice by Prince Shotoku in the 6. Century, is in the TG a part of everyday life. There are many elements of Christianity found throughout the story of Beowulf: that man survives only through the protection of God, that all earthly gifts flow from God, and that the proper bearing of man is to be humble and unselfish. However, the strong sense of heroic pride within Beowulf can at times be in direct conflict with these Christian values. Through this juxtaposition, we see the dichotomies of pride vs. humility and sacrifice vs. selfishness. When Beowulf relates his battle with Grendel's mother he acknowledges God as his protector as do others. The leader of the Geats states that he would "gladly trust the force of God's favor" (W.Lit. 922). There is a sense of mystical protection present throughout the story of Beowulf. Yet in the story there is also a strong sense that God's protection must be earned; a warrior must first be true to his values, courage, honesty, pride, and humility and only then will he earn God's protection. In addition to earthly protection, there is also the sense that all earthly good, be it success or wealth, derives from God. God is described as the "Granter of Grace, true Lord of glory" (W.Lit. 967). The true power lies with God. Any delight that a man enjoys here on earth is achieved only through the grace of God. Not only that, but the earthly success, given by God, must be handled with humility and a sense of sharing or the earthly king will bring on his own doom. Hrothgar tells Beowulf that life itself ... The aesthetic of ruins can help us understand aspects of interior design in terms of the lack of human presence indicating elements we might otherwise ignore. To explore this theme, I will examine how theorists have thought about the aesthetic of abandonment in relation to the beauty of abandoned structures, beginning with the work of Gordon Matta–Clark, in leading us to rethink our lived in environment apart from just its visual aspect. Gay Watson introduces the idea of emptiness as a therapeutic perspective and following this I discuss the origins of beauty in impermanence, non–selfhood and emptiness. I also analysis beauty existing in ruined buildings that reveals the relationship between space and human beings, supported by the work of Henri Lefebvre. In order to link the use of abandonment and aesthetic beauty, the background to Gordon Matta–Clark will be briefly outlined. Known for his site–specific 'building cuts' made in the 1970s, Matta–Clark draws our attention to the fact that we are usually too busy to notice the other significances of our living space besides its domestic function. Apart from its interior equipment, we care little about a building's character, which may lack functionality or an attractive aesthetic. Matta–Clark's works usually focus on the abandoned building from which he removes sections of ceilings, floors, and walls, as a part of so–called "Anarchitecture". The meditation practices she developed helps one relax, become more self–aware, and focused on thoughts of love and compassion not only towards oneself but also towards others. Another aspect that I had not taken into consideration is the difference between self–compassion and self–esteem. I have never looked at self–esteem being a problematic, negative term, now I understand the aspects of it that can be detrimental to ones well–being. Always striving to have high self–esteem leads us to put other people down in the process, it also insinuates that we have to be perfect and better to be worthy, which is the opposite of what Neff's concept of self–compassion entails. Our society thrives on the idea that one has to be better than their counterpart, what we lack is this idea of self–compassion. Kerouac was a devoted student of the Buddhist way and would often impress his peers with his knowledge of the Sutras and other Buddhist texts and ideas. This is particularly interesting when it is considered that these peers were other students of Buddhism such as Gary Snyder or even Philip Whalen, who is an ordained Zen monk. In fact, Kerouac was so immersed in Buddhist thought that in 1956 he completed the manuscript to what would become a 420 page book titled Some Of The Dharma, which was a collection of notes and thoughts on various ideas taken from the Sutras. Included also were numerous poems and prose poems, which were attempts to transliterate the ancient wisdom of Buddhism into a modern context, applicable to the western intellectual and spiritual journeyman. Some of the Dharma was to be a study guide for the beginning practice of Kerouac’s good friend and companion Allen Ginsberg. While Kerouac was writing what was perhaps his best and certainly one of his most spiritually driven novels, Desolation Angels, he was also writing a poem to accompany the novel which was titled Desolation Blues. Although written after Kerouac was no longer up on Desolation Peak serving as a fire lookout in the Sierra Nevada mountain range, it was a reflection upon the many contemplations provoked by the solitude and serenity of the time he spent alone atop the mountain. • 38. Flower Ornament Sutra Vs Buddhism Essay Buddhism, on the other hand, understands the psychological nature of humans very deeply and develops effective treatment methods. As revealed in the Flower Ornament Sutra [Avatamsaka Sutra], "Our perception Three Kingdoms arise from the mind, so do Twelve Links of Dependent Origination; birth and death come from the mind, which are extinguished when the mind is put to rest". If we view Buddhism in this lens, itself in conglomeration with psychology has much to reveal about both practices (Williams–Oerberg, Elizabeth, 2012). The journey "home" that Buddhists refer to as the privilege of enlightenment, the ultimate truth, is called the paramattha. The Paramattha is not the same journey as other faiths profess, because other faiths, like the science known as psychology, emphasize outside influence, in one way or another, in the ancient long search for understanding. Understanding life, afterlife, existence, thought, personality, behavior, and the unknown. Theory Vipassana meditation (VM) aims to create psychological distance between the self and emotions to allow emotional regulation and reduce negative results. Meditation combines three interacting practices of intention, attention, and attitude. Meditators are guided by the intention to be fully aware of their emotional and physical states, self–regulate, and liberate themselves by focusing their attention on each moment and be aware of the contents of their consciousness with an attitude of non–judgmental compassion, acceptance, and curiosity. Cognitive reappraisal (paying attention to thoughts) is utilized to regulate emotional states. By reappraising their relationship with their emotions and habitual responses, practitioners can disassociate from their emotional state and reframe thoughts, feelings, and emotions as impermanent mental occurrence.1 Another way to state this process is that pain reduction occurs by "uncoupling" the physical sensation from the emotional and cognitive experiences of pain, thus reducing the overall pain experienced.2 2. Indications for Vipassana Meditation VM has been utilized to modulate pain, mitigate anxiety and depression, improve cognitive function, and produce changes in gray matter density of the brain. 3. Contraindications for Vipassana Meditation Meditation can be used in most treatment protocols, however there are some populations that require caution when utilizing this therapy. Patients that ...
