QUESTION 1
Q1. IN WHAT WAYS DOES YOUR MEDIA PRODUCT
USE, DEVELOP OR CHALLENGE FORMS AND
CONVENTIONS OF REAL MEDIA PRODUCTS?
I styled my magazine off of “Kerrang!” as it is an already existing popular
rock magazine. Based off of this there are certain forms and conventions
and conventions that follow this genre. These include a profound
behaviour, illustrated through the middle finger (1), and the involvement
of particular bands in the genre (2). Another convention associated with
the genre is my choice of mast head “DISTORTION” similar to “Kerrang!”
in the sense that it is to do with the sound of music, “DISTORTION” (3)
conveying the volume of which the music is associated with, LOUD.
The more formal conventions my cover follows are the mast head being
at the top of the top of the page (3). Also, the picture is of one focal
model with direct eye contact to the camera (4). Another one is the cover
lines featuring artist (2) to intrigue readers of the genre. Staying with
cover lines the feature article cover line (5) is bigger than the rest. Then
underneath the feature article cover line there is a strapline (6)
highlighting the artist. The last forms to take not of are the pricing and
barcode (7) and the date of the month of the issues release (8).

COVERFORMS
Colours:
My choice of colours were red, black, yellow and other dark tones. I used
these as they properly conveyed the dark grungey music of its content.
Also the black and yellow was used for caution tape associating it with a
crime scene, therefore danger
Image:
The photo I used was of myself taken by someone but i made sure I had
creative direction over the shoot choosing to use my middle finger for the
profound look I wanted the magazine to take on fitting the music as much
as possible.
Text:
For the text I made sure that the sizing and placement of it so it stayed
within convention and the right piece of text were bigger and stood out
more, such as the mast head head big and the top of the page and
feature article cover line bigger than the other cover lines. The pricing and
barcode were just at the bottom as they were a necessity not so much of
the interesting parts of text. I made sure the fonts I used for the texts
distinguished each piece from the other so the readers can more easily
understand which is which.
For my contents I didn’t really have any inspiration to go off of
because to me there s nothing particularly inspiring about a
contents
So based on this I made sure I followed the conventions as close as
possible to keep it on what is successful, where as some I left out
as I felt it wouldn’t fit my magazine changing it for a unique,
alternative style. The mast head of the magazine and issue date (1)
has been placed in as this is one of these formal conventions. The
other convention I followed is the page numbers next to the artists
(2) so the actual function of the contents is fulfilled. I added in a
breif explanation of what will come for the articles of the cover line
artists (3) as people will flick inside to the contents after looking at
the cover lines I’ve noticed, so I added more to entice them further.

CONTENTS FORMS
Colours:
The contents used the same colours to keep with the consistency of the desired look.
The caution tape look has been used differently this time as it was bordering the page
rather than backing up the masthead.
Image:
Again with the image I was the picture with creative direction chosing to have a guitar as
a prop for further affect of my music genre. Facing the camera with eye contact was a
convention of the front cover so I was able to experiment more In the contents.
Text:
In the contents I didn’t have to be as creative as I reused some of the fonts for
consistency and I needed fairly normal font choices just for ease of reading to use the
contents quicker.
ARTICLE
CONVENTIONS
My article wasn’t a very experimental piece of
work I will admit but based on that fact I stuck
to a structured format hitting very certain
conventions. One of these is that it is a
double page article with one side being a
photo (1) and the other the article (2). The
article of choice was a Q ‘n’ A style article (2).
The footers with page numbers (3) were
placed also. I also added embedded quotes
(4) on the picture and in the article.

ARTICLEFORMS
Colours:
I chose a black background with white wrtiting as a negative contrast
of colours rather the opposite of black on white. This represents the
alterative nature of the magazine’s content and feature article band.
Image:
The image was of three of us, me included again, to show the “band’
together and I chose to leave a sketchy white outline round the
picture purposely, as I accidentally done this, to give it an edgy
broken up feel to it.
Text:
The text was fairly basic using similar style fonts to that of “Q” and
“KERRANG!”, which meant for more rounded off lettering. Going
back to the colours I used white text to properly contrast the text in a
negative colour scheme.
BREAKING
CONVENTION
I rarely broke convention as they are considered conventions because of the success they create from
their use.
A typical convention I broke though was the use of profanity on my front yet that still is typical of a
rock music magazine.
