Q1
1. 1. In what ways does your media
product use, develop or challenge
forms and conventions of real media
products?
Aaron Gannon-Clark
2. Influence
Classic Rock – The reason I picked this the
fact I actually read it. Also the that it is a
very informal magazine that engages with
the audience while still being informative
and decent. This fits in with my magazine
as that is how I planned to make my
magazine, keeping the interview
informative but still having the informal
side of Classic Rock and Kerrang.
The theme for this magazine is quite
simple, and yet it isn’t boring. It never
has too many colours and is normally just
different shades.
4. Similarities
What I took away from that is to
use white, or some kind other plain
colour, as a background as this
would help me to keep the
magazine simplistic and yet still
have it looking professional. Also,
like most magazines the feature on
the front overlaps the main title
and so I did that too.
Like Classic Rock, I made a tag line
“In You Face” along with
“#HardAndHeavy”.
5. Differences
Unlike the Muse edition of Classic Rock, I put a trio
of people on the cover and not just one person and
this is because later in the magazine (in the double
page spread) I have included individual picture of
each member and so the front cover helps the
reader to be able to know who they are and that
they are not just session musicians.
Also, in the Classic Rock, Bellamy looks very serious
and is looking straight into the camera. On my
cover, only one member is looking into the camera
and the rest are looking elsewhere. Their stance
and body language is also a lot different as it’s not
as serious and you can tell there is a connection
between the three. This fits in with my magazine as
Emric is looking into the camera with a kind of
sarcastic expression, showing he isnt taking this
too seriously, which matches my magazine as it
also isn’t too serious and has a light air to it.
7. Similarities
My contents page sticks to most
conventions of a magazine contents
page (page numbers, website, social
networking addresses and such). It
also goes as far as having a stamp next
to the picture as most professional
pictures in magazines have.
The part that says “Cover
Story/38/UnKnown” was inspired by
the muse edition of Classic Rock.
8. Differences
There is only one picture on the contents,
when there is normally one big feature one
with other smaller pictures around or by the
bottom.
The reason for me only including one picture is
that it signifies to the audience that this
member is the main member of the band (this
also coincides with the fact she is the centre of
the front page).
Her importance was put this obviously as it
shows to the audience (especially people that
don’t follow the feature band) that she is the
centrepiece of the band and this fact just helps
the reader understand the status’ in the band.
10. Similarities
Due to the fact I used
several magazines to
compare and contrast
between each, my double
page spread doesn’t stick
to any specific other
spread but a multitude of
ones.
Although it isnt based on
any one spread it does
have a lot of the expected
conventions in it, such as
having normal text while
having bold quotes that
have been edited to stick
out.
11. Differences
When it came to
making my double
page spread I tried to
stick to the
conventions as closely
as I could as I wanted
it to look as
professional as
possible and
therefore I don’t
believe there are any
breaks or alterations
in conventions when
it comes to my double
page spread.
