This document discusses whether electric vehicles are a real alternative to petroleum-based vehicles. It analyzes the production of CO2 from electric vehicles and finds that while EVs emit less CO2 from operation, the electricity used to charge them is often produced from coal which emits CO2. It also examines issues with recycling lithium ion batteries, finding the process is difficult and hazardous due to the variety of materials in batteries. Additionally, lithium supplies may be depleted if EV use rapidly expands. While EVs have benefits, the document concludes they may still significantly impact the environment due to electricity production and battery disposal and recycling challenges.
