How does your media product
represent particular social
groups?
Age
Mostly all of the people portrayed in my magazine are from 16-18 years old. I
have also included a few older artist which then will seem more experienced.
Their face expressions does also reflect their young age. Instead of being serious
they are smiling and laughing. Even though they are not children anymore, they
are not grown ups. They can still have fun and enjoy themselves. They have not
grown old yet and live for today. They do not really care what other people think
about them. They just want to have a good time. In the second picture it looks
like they are just a group of friends that are hanging out having fun.
The people portrayed in my pictures are dressed in fashionable clothing. This
represent how young people care about fashion and appearance and how this is
important to them. In the third picture the girl is wearing a bright pink dress. This
can tell us that she still is playful and likes to have fun, but at the same time she
cares about looking good and dressing up. This is also a short dress which might
be because she wants to show off her legs which can be looked at as flirty. She is
not overly sexualized, she is wearing a cardigan, her cleavage is not showing and
she is wearing leggings, but she is still wearing a short dress. Maybe she wants to
attract a boy or just want to be attractive.
Gender
The people portrayed in my magazine are mostly girls, but there is also a man
included in the magazine.
In the first picture you can see a girl. She has long hair, long eyelashes and her
lips are emphasized. These are all elements that stereotypical for women and
girls. These are also thing that girls strive to have themselves, so therefore when
they see a girl in a magazine which has these things they will look up to her and
aspire to be more like her. She becomes a sort of inspiration for them.
In the second picture you can see another girl. She is wearing a dress, she has
long hair (even though it is not as long as the first girls hair, it is still long) and
she has make up on. This again are stereotypical for women and girls. To care
about your appearance is something that is excepted for girls in our society.
They are excepted to want to dress well and look well, to spend time on
choosing your outfits and to do your makeup. Therefore does this picture
represent the way femininity is looked at in our society today.
In the third picture you can see the picture of the man. He is wearing dark
clothes, he has a beard and is presented in a quite masculine way. The picture is
also taken from a low angel which makes him seem more powerful. The fact
that he has a beard makes him seem like he doesn’t really care about his
appearance and looking fresh and clean all the time like the girls do.
Class
Since the people portrayed in my magazine are mostly
underage and does not have a job, their social class would be
defined by the social class of their parents. By looking at how
the people are portrayed in the pictures, I would say they are
middle class.
By looking at these two pictures we can see several element
that would tell us that they are middle class. Firstly we can
consider their clothes. They are all wearing casual clothes
they you would wear on an everyday basic. They are not by
specific clothing brands, but by stores that almost everyone
can afford. They are not dressed up either, as if they were
going to a important event. We can also look at the locations
used. They are not in a hi-tech, modern studio, but out by the
seaside. This is somewhere everyone can go and it doesn’t
cost any money.
Ethnicity
The people portrayed in my magazine are mostly of white ethnicity. They
are all from western Europe. Some are partly from other countries and do
partly have other ethnicities. I have included people both from the UK and
from other countries in western Europe. This is because I want to focus on
selling my magazine in the UK, but I also want people from other
countries to be able to order the magazine online. English is a language
most people all over the world speak so I think there is not anything
negative about selling my magazines to other countries as well.
Most people that make indie music today are of white ethnicity and the
people portrayed in my magazine will therefore reflect this. Also since
York is not a place where there live a lot of other ethnicities I do not know
anyone with other ethnicities that I could portrait.
By including people with white ethnicity it will appeal to most people in
the UK and the rest of Europe. By including some that are partly not of
white ethnicity as well I will appeal to a even larger audience. Today
ethnicities are mixing together and there are loads of people that are
party one and partly another ethnicity. I will be able to represent them as
well.
