Powerpoint for question 2
1. How does my media
product represent
particular social groups?
2. Front Cover Image
• For the front cover of my magazine I decided to use a 17 year old
female student from Worcester sixth form college. It's a medium
close up and she is positioned at the side while playing the violin. As
my magazine is aimed at males AND females I wasn't too bothered
about what gender to have for my magazine, however I thought
Carla suited the part quite nicely as she is an attractive female who's
also a teenager which is who my magazine is aimed at. I suppose
this could be seen as a problem as having a female on the front
cover may seem as though the magazine is aimed at just girls
however I made sure that the colour scheme and pictures included
in the magazine pages also include males too. On my front cover,
Carla is pretending to play the violin as I wanted her to look like a
teenager who is into classical music as it is a classical magazine, so
by holding the instrument it is made quite obvious. She is also
wearing a classy patterned top as I wanted my her to come across as
quite smart and sophisticated and I made sure it wasn't too
revealing as I did not want to attract the wrong kind of attention,
especially as women who tend to reveal themselves are usually
seen in a sexual way. As my magazine is aimed at teenage radical
individualists I asked her to bring in quite a colourful/unusual top as
I wanted her to also look quite unique and interesting. She is also
wearing minimal make up as I wanted her to show natural beauty,
as I believe the more sophisticated, classy look is achieved by
looking natural and pure, as too much makeup can sometimes look
fake and it would also make the magazine look a lot more feminine
which is not was not what I wanted.
3. The Masthead
• The title of my magazine is 'crescendo' which is the Italian
musical term for 'To play a piece with increasing volume.' which I
thought suited my magazine well as it mimics the style of
classical music for instance in orchestras. Also it may attract
teenagers that are aware of the musical terminology that are
into classical music. It also gives the impression of the magazine
being exciting and interesting which is what is needed as my
magazine is aimed at teenagers so I wanted my mine to look
engaging but classy and sophisticated. I made sure the fonts I
used didn't look to masculine or feminine as this could also
attract the wrong audience.
4. The colour Scheme
• I decided to stick to a colour scheme throughout my magazine
which is red, black and white. I thought this was a good idea as my
magazine is aimed at both males and females and those colours suit
both genders perfectly. I think these colours also make my
magazine look a lot more smarter and classy as random colours
aren't being thrown about the page. I also quite like the way Carla's
outfit is white, blue and black as this goes with the colour scheme
but the blue also helps her stand out which is good as she is being
looked up to but in a good way, rather than being seen as an object
for men, which is quite common in this day in age. The fact that her
outfit isn't too girly also helps as it helps show that the magazine is
not just aimed at women.
5. Double page spread
• For the double page spread I decided to use all boys as
for my front cover I used a girl so I thought it would be a
good idea to even it out by using both genders in my
photos. I used a long shot image of the 3 boys, stood
against a white background as I wanted them to look like
a boy band that have gone for a photo shoot. The fact
that I used a long shot image also shows that these boys
aren’t being photographed for sexual pleasure as it is
common for males to be photographed in medium close
up’s either revealing flesh or posing sexually. The image is
quite simple as there aren't any crops used, and the three
boys are just stood in a line looking into the camera which
I thought was a good idea as I wanted them to look
serious, like a real boy band. The fact that they are all
wearing smart-casual clothes also gives a more
sophisticated feel towards the magazine and also shows
that they aren’t posing for female attention, but for the
music, unlike some boy bands today that use themselves
to advertise their work. The way that I have laid out my
double page spread is quite adult looking, which implies
that this magazine is aimed at teenagers of a more
mature nature, which also shows how adults shouldn’t
stereotype teenagers as party animals, drug takers,
trouble-makers etc as not every teen is the same.
