2. ABC1 males aged 18 - 35 who thrive in the world of unknown and
experimentation in science. Typical viewers are young adults that
enjoy the sciences of comic books and action packed gaming with
minds that expand from the norm. They are avid gamers with high
interests in technology and are exceptionally literate in sci-fi
literature (such as comics) as well as other films and franchises.
They are exceptionally smart when producing theories to
challenge the ways of society as well as technology and other
ideas. Appearances are not important to them but their love of the
unknown and research highlights their intellect and their passion
for action and the exploration of issues that expand society as well
as the universe beyond our solar system.

4. Initially, we decided that our audience would fit the explorer psychographic as they would be
attracted to the action that features in our opening sequence, and the suspense created,
especially at the end of the sequence. We believed they would love the excitement and the
adventure that surrounds the main character within the sequence. Although our audience does
fit this psychographic, other psychographics such as the reformer may have an interest in our
film due to the narration that’s established within our opening sequences. Our opening
sequence features aspects that challenge society, and explore personal freedom, especially as
seen within the main character we are introduced to.
5. After using BFI, we found some research that
challenges our initial primary profile especially
when concerning gender:
The Hunger Games franchise fits into our sub-genre
of cyberpunk as it is set in a futuristic setting but as
aspects of society issues. This shows us that our
opening sequence may be popular with females as
well as males thus widening the people our sequence
and film is aimed at.
In addition to the wider variety in audience concerning
gender, statistics from 2013 show that sci-fi was the
4th most popular genre:
6. After doing some further research, we looked at
the top films of 2016. Within the top ten, ‘The
Divergent Series: Allegiant’, which is an example of
a film from our chosen sub-genre, placed at
number eight. This particular film, and the other
films in this series, is set in a futuristic, dystopian
Chicago. It tackles social issues, and challenges
authority, which is very similar to the themes that
feature within ‘Rectified’. By looking at these
statistics, we saw that there is a place in the film
market for our film, and that it is likely to attract a
large audience.
7. To determine an age rating for our film, we visited
www.bbfc.co.uk, as we were unsure whether our film
would be rated 12A or 15. We researched films similar to
‘Rectified’ that belonged to the Cyberpunk genre, and
discovered that most of the films feature strong violence,
and as a result, are rated 15. Due to this, and with
consideration for our primary target audience, we
decided to rate ‘Rectified’ as a 15, as there may be
aspects of strong violence later in the film. For the film to
be rated 12A, we would only be able to feature moderate
violence in our film if we were to feature any at all.
Furthermore, the plot lines and the context of the film
may be too complex for a younger audience, who may
lose interest in the film if they can’t understand it.
